Title: Light Up My Room

He watched her lying on her bed in a feverish sweat. He had to do something for her, he couldn’t heal her, she wouldn’t let him.

“I came as soon as I heard.”

Max turned to see Alex walk in the room.

“Let me sit with her for a while, you get some rest.”

Max nodded and left. Alex looked around her room. Nothing special, a girl’s room. He sat on the edge of the bed and picked up his guitar.

“A hydro-field cuts through my neighbor hood
Sometimes that always just made me feel good
I can put a spare bulb in my hand
And light up my yard

Late at night when the wires in the walls
Sing in tune with the din of the walls
I’m conducting it all while I sleep
To light the whole town

If you question what I would do
To get over and be with you
Lift you up over everything
To light up my room, my room

There’s a shopping cart in the ravine
The foam on the creek is like pop and ice cream
A field full of tires that is always on fire
To light my way home

There are luxuries we can’t afford
But in out house we never get bored
We can dance to the radio station
That plays in our teeth

If you question what I would do
To get over and be with you
Lift you up over everything
To light up my room, my room

He put his guitar down, and went to get a wet towel for her head. He bent down and kissed her forehead before he placed the towel on it. She smiled with out opening her eyes. He walked out of the room. Max passed him on his way out.

“How’s she doing?”

“Same”

“Alex? Thanks.”

Next Day

“What ever you did yesterday, she’s better. The fever is down. Can you do it again?”

“I’ll try.”

Alex made her way up to Isabel’s room. He again took out his guitar and sat on the edge of the bed.

“With life just begun, my sleeping new son has eyes that roll back in his head
They flutter and dart, he slows down his heart and pictures a world past his bed
It’s hard to believe
As I watch you breathe
Your mind drifts and weaves

When you dream, what do you dream about?
When you dream, what do you dream about?
Do you dream about music or mathematics or planets too far for the eye?
Do you dream about Jesus or quantum mechanics or angels who sing lullabies?

His fontanelle pulsed with lives that he’s lived
With memories he’ll learn to ignore
And when it is closed, he already knows he’s forgotten all he knew before
But when sleep sets in
History begins
But the future will win

When you dream, what do you dream about?
When you dream, what do you dream about?
Are they colour or black and white,
Yiddish or English or languages not yet conceived?
Are they silent or boisterous?
Do you hear noises just loud enough to be perceived?
Do you hear Del Shannon’s “Runaway” playing on transistor radio waves?
With so little experience, your mind not yet cognizant
Are you wise beyond your few days?
When you dream, what do you dream about?
When you dream, what do you dream about?”
~Barenaked Ladies-When you Dream

He put the guitar away and held her hand. “I love you.” he said softly.

“Alex?” she said weakly.

“Yes”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll come back tomorrow and play another. You rest now.”

“Ok. I look forward to it.”

He kissed her hand and left.

As he promised, Alex came back the next day. He entered Isabel’s room and discovered she was sitting up.

“Would you like some soup?” he asked smiling.

“Mmm. Please.”

“I’ll be right back.”

When he came back, he had a bowl of hot chicken soup and a cup of tea on a tray.

“Enjoy”

“Thank you”

“I think it’s getting to the point where I can be myself again
I think it’s getting to the point where we have almost made amends
I think it’s getting to the point that’s the hardest part

and if you call, I will answer
and if you fall, I’ll pick you up
and if you court this disaster
I’ll point you home

You think I only think about you when we’re both in the same room
You think I’m only here to witness the remains of love exhumed
You think were here to play a game of who loves more than whom

and if you call, I will answer
and if you fall, I’ll pick you up
and if you court this disaster
I’ll point you home

You think it’s only fair to do what’s best for you and you alone
You think its only fair to do the same to me when your not home
I think it’s time to make this something that is more than only fair

so if you call, I will answer
and if you fall, I’ll pick you up
and if you court this disaster
I’ll point you home

But I’m warning you, don’t ever do those crazy, messed-up things that you do
If you do, I promise I’ll be the first to crucify you
Now its time to prove that you’ve come back to rebuild, rebuild, rebuild”
Barenaked Ladies~Call and Answer

“Alex?”

He raised his eyebrows in question.

“you’re the best.”

“Thanks”

She started to get up. He rushed over to help her. She stood, taking both of his hands in hers.

The first day you walked in here you lit up my room. If I was well, I’d never let you in. I’m glad you did though.”

‘I met you before the fall of Rome
And I begged you to let me take you home
You were wrong, I was right
You said goodbye, I said goodnight

Its all been done
Its all been done
Its all been done before’

“The only thing I really needed to get well was…was love. You gave that to me. I always liked you, I was afraid to let that show.”

‘I knew you before the west was won
And I heard you say the past was much more fun
You go your way, I’ll go mine
But I’ll see you next time

Its all been done
Its all been done
Its all been done before’

“I do love you. Can we give it a chance? If you hate me, I understand. I wasn’t very nice.”

‘And if I put my fingers here, and if I say ‘I love you dear’
And play the same three chords will you just yawn and say
Its all been done before?’

“If I hated you, would I have come here when you were sick? Would I have spent my time following you around? Isabel Evans I’ve always loved you. Yes, we can try. I t would mean the world to me.”

‘Alone and bored on a thirtieth-century night
Will I see you on The Price Is Right?
Will I cry? Will I smile
As you run down the aisle?

Its all been done
Its all been done
Its all been done before’
~Barenaked Ladies-It’s all been Done

At that moment their mouths crashed together in a passionate kiss that seemed to last forever. They finally stopped to breathe. She looked up at him. “Thank you. I love you.”

“I love you too.”
