In the Parkers home, Liz Parker tossed and turned in her sleep. Distressed whimpers passed her lips.

*Liz stared in the window of the Crashdown as her friends and family laughed and joked. Mentally, she screamed in anguish.

Always alone.

A muscular arm was wrapped around her shoulder and Liz looked up to see Cole watching the scene.

"Why aren't you in there?"

"Because I can't tell them."

"Why not?"

The scene shifted and Liz's friends and family, even her children, were glaring at her. Their faces were filled with hate and their eyes were filled with pain.

One by one, they all turned away from her.

"That's why."

Liz turned and snuggled into the body next to her. She buried her nose in his neck and inhaled his familiar and comforing scent.

Cole shifted in his sleep and tightened his arms around Liz.

"Don't worry Lizzie. I'm here."

Chapter One

Cole woke slowly. His eyes still closed, he frowned, realising he wasn't at home.

Cole slowly became aware of the small body in his arms.

//Phoebe? No. Liz?//

Slowly, his eyes opened and immediately shut again.

//Damn New Mexico sun!// he silently growled.

He quickly shimmered back to his apartment in San Francisco.

//She called me to her again.//

Cole wondered if she knew what she was doing.

Liz gave a small moan as she awoke. The details of her dream came back to her and the knot in her throat reappeared.

"Hey chica! Woa! Tess, call the FBI! Liz is still in bed!" Maria cried as she entered Liz's bedroom with Tess.

Tess smiled at Maria, shaking her head.

Since the events that had transpired three weeks ago, Tess and Liz had begun a tenuous friendship. Liz had to admit Tess was really fun, and she regretted not making friends with Tess sooner.

Liz looked to her bedside clock and groaned.

"Maria! It's still early!"

Maria put a hand over her heart and staggered back. Both Liz and Tess laughed outright at the shock on Maria's face.

"Still early. Still early! What happened to you girl? It's 8:00."

Liz frowned and looked to her clock. It read 6:45.

"Nooooo, Maria. It's almost seven o'clock."

Maria turned on the radio and the announcer declared it was indeed 8:00.

"Ohmigod! I'm gonna be late!"

Liz lurched out of bed and began scurrying around her room.

"I don't understand," Liz griped as she ducked into the Jetta. "I mean, I know it was the right time last night."

"Well, your powers have been on the fritz for the past week." Tess supplied.

"Yeah," Maria spoke up. "Remember Seans green hair?"

"And Malamuds pants?"

"Ok, ok. Point taken and duly noted," Liz laughed. She was currently rummaging through her purse. "Umm, anyone got a hair clip or something?"

"Oh, I have," Tess said, handing the clip to Liz.

The girls chatted over nothing in particular all the way to school.

I know, crappy ending but my muse is sooooooo not co-operating.

I'll be back as soon as poss

Chapter 2

Liz sat on her bed with a small smile as she listened to Sandy recount her first day of school.

Liz looked up with a start at her mother.

“Umm, just a minute. Yeah mom?”

“It’s dinner time honey. Finish up on the phone.”

“Yeah ok.” Liz waited until her mom was out of the room before going back to her conversation. “Mommy’s got to go now, honey. Why don’t you put Aunt Piper on the phone.”

Liz smirked into the phone.

<Hey Liz. How are you? >

“I’m fine. You? Are the kids driving you crazy?”

Piper laughed and denied it. A few minutes later, Liz hung up.

Walking into the kitchen, Liz noticed her parents conversation stop and they both gave her strained smiles. Cautiously, she sat down at her place and started her dinner. Fifteen minutes of silence and nervous glances later and Liz put down her fork.

“What?” she asked, truly fed up.

“Umm, well…” her father started. “You remember my brother, Clive?”

Liz nodded.

“Well, he died a month ago and uh…”

“We inherited his home. A mansion really. And we were wondering if you minded moving…” Liz’s mother trailed of at the horrified look on her daughters face.

“What? Move?” Liz choked out. “I can’t move. What about school and Maria? All my friends?”

“Oh honey, we know this is hard and… sudden…”

“No! You don’t know!” Liz shouted before running out of the apartment.

Her feet flew along the pavement, not really knowing where she was going and not caring. She just needed… someone.

Before she knew it, Liz was stood in front of a familiar house and knocking on the door.

When a blond head popped out of the door and blue eyes widened in shock, Liz broke.

“Oh God, Tess. I need your help.”

“Why did you come to me?” Tess asked as she set the cup of tea in front of Liz.

When she and Nasedo had stayed in England for a while, she had learned that tea had a very soothing effect on her nerves and emotions.

“I mean, and please don’t take this the wrong way, but I thought you would’ve gone to Maria or Max,” Tess said soothingly.

“So did I,” Liz sniffled. “But I need someone who won’t… y’know.”

“Yeah.” And Tess did know. Maria would be hysterical and Max…

Tess sat mulling over the situation before straightening in resolve. When she had first come to Roswell, Liz had been distrusting. Even after the whole Destiny fiasco, Liz hadn’t really liked her. But despite her own feelings toward Tess and Max, Liz had been the most supporting of her relationship with Max. Even going as far as to pretend to sleep with Kyle to push Max away from her.

Tess knew Liz hadn’t slept with Kyle. She knew Liz wouldn’t, couldn’t do that with someone she didn’t love. And it was as plain as the nose on her face that Liz was still deeply in love with Max. Yet, despite their history, Liz had become a good friend and she wasn’t about to lose that friendship.

“I think I have an idea.”

“Mr and Mrs Parker, I’m a good friend of Liz’s. Tess Harding.” Tess smiled at the confused and concerned parents. Liz was still at the Harding house and Tess had come here on her own.

“What can we do for you Tess? And please, call me Nancy.”

“Well, Nancy, Liz told me about your decision to move and I’m really worried about it. See, Liz is on her way to becoming valedictorian at Roswell and she is really grounded here. She has a lot of friends and memories here.”

“We know this Tess,” Jeff interrupted. “But there’s nothing we can do about it. We already ironed out the plans to sell the Crashdown.”

Tess took a deep breath and prayed that she had learned enough about negotiations from Nasedo.

“Well, I think I have a solution.” The Parker’s looked at her confused. “I’ve been an emancipated minor since my father died last year. I have a really big house that I kinda don’t like living in alone. I was considering selling it and getting a smaller apartment, but under the circumstances…”

When Tess returned to her home, it was to find the Deluca’s Jetta, the Evans’ Jeep and Kyle’s mustang lined up on the street.

The door opened before and Cole stood leaning on the doorjamb.

“Hey,” Tess frowned. “What are you doing here?”

“Umm,” Cole’s eyes shifted to the side. He didn’t want to tell her that he had sensed Liz’s distress and had appeared almost as soon as Tess had left. “I came to give Liz the weekly report on the kids.”

“Oh. I guess you heard huh?”

“Yeah. Nice place you got,” Cole murmured as Tess brushed past him.

“Hey guys!” Tess chirped as she bounced into the room. The occupants stared at her in shock.

“Umm, Tess. You’re happy. Why?” Kyle asked.

“I just got back from the Parker’s. Liz, how do you feel about living here until Graduation?” All of a sudden, Tess was shy. What if Liz didn’t want to live here?

Here fears were totally unjustified, she found, when Liz launched herself from her seat and hugged Tess.

“Are you kidding? Tess! That’s great! Mom and Dad said I could…”

The others stared at Tess in speechless shock.

“So… Liz is staying?” Maria asked slowly.

Tess nodded, or tried to as Liz had her in a near choke hold. Maria squealed in happiness and began hugging everyone.

“Oh, this is great! I can’t believe this!” Liz cried. “Thank you Tess. Thank you so much!”

“I say we celebrate!” Alex piped up and everyone agreed.

It was a happy day for everyone except Cole who was stood in the corner. Liz had to tell someone. And soon. He could tell this secret was taking its toll on her conscience. And if her dreams were any indication, she was going to crack. And it wasn’t going to be pretty.

Chapter 3

Nancy stood in the doorway of Liz’s room and tried to hold back her tears. Her baby girl was moving out to live with her friend and she and Jeff were moving to another state.

Nancy looked into her daughters concerned eyes.

“Are… Are you sure you don’t mind? I mean, thank you for understanding how important this is to me and all, but… Are you Ok?” Liz asked, sensing that her mother was upset.

Liz understood perfectly how hard it was to give up your children. Even though she talked to them almost all the time, she missed them so much.

“Liz… I have to talk to you honey. I can’t just leave you and not have you know.”

“Know what, mom?”

Nancy took a deep breath and sat down on the edge of her daughter’s bed.

“Honey, you were adopted. I know you don’t remember…”

“Mom, I know,” Liz interrupted softly. Nancy looked shocked, so Liz explained. “I found out when we were doing genetics in Biology. You and Dad both have blue eyes. It’s impossible for to blue eyed people to have a brown eyed child.”

“Oh honey. I’m so sorry we didn’t tell you!” Nancy burst out crying.

“Momma, I love you and Daddy just the same,” Liz whispered as she held her crying mother. “You will always be my parents. No matter what.”

Liz and Tess were having a blast, decorating Liz’s new bedroom. Liz’s parents had left that morning and Liz had brought her stuff over immediately.

“What do you think?” Tess asked, waving her hand over a part of the wall. Immediately, the wall was a deep burgundy.

Liz studied it, then stuck her tongue out.

“Nah. I never really liked that colour. What about a dark blue?”

The burgundy shifted to a midnight blue and Liz clapped her hands.

“It’s perfect!” she cried.

With a wave of Liz’s hand, the midnight blue of her ceiling and walls were dotted with spots of silver and gold. Another wave and Tess could have sworn she was surrounded by the cosmos as constellations and nebulas appeared. Taking centre stage was the V formation, glowing brighter than the other stars.

“Wow,” she whispered in awe. “Liz, it’s beautiful.”

“Isn’t it?”

“Liz, are you sure you’re Ok? Staying with me and all? Cos I know we got off to a rough start.”

Liz levelled Tess with a serious look.

“Tess, you have become a really good friend to me. If anyone is to blame for us not being friends before this, it’s me.” Liz went quite for a second, then brightened. “We need ice-cream.”

Ten minutes later, both the girls were sat opposite each other with the cold treat.

“I admit, I was really jealous when you came to Roswell,” Liz began. “I guess that it really clouded my judgement.”

“Well it was my fault. I mean, I did everything I could to break you and Max apart. You really love each other.”

“But you two are meant to be together. You’re his wife!” Liz stated emphatically.

“No, I don’t think we are, and I’m not his wife.”

“I don’t love Max. I love the idea of Max. Do you know that Nasedo used to tell me stories about Zan and Ava? When I was little, he’d tell me all these stories about how much Max would love me when we finally met. How we would all be one happy family. I guess I tricked myself into believing it.”

“What do you mean Tess?”

“I mean, I don’t love Max. And I am not his wife. Ava and Zan were married. We’re different people here.”

Liz was sat there, looking very shell-shocked. Tess decided to finally confide in Liz. Maybe she and Max could be happy.

“Liz, I know you love Max. And I’m ok with it. I know you only pretended to sleep with Kyle. Max and I have gotten closer, yes. But he hasn’t ever treated me like he does you and… I realised that as much as I want to love him… I don’t. I mean I do, just like a friend. I want him to be happy and he’s only ever happy with you.” A blush stole across Tess’s face. “Besides, there’s someone else.”

“Oh, my God! Who?”

Tess blushed again and Liz became serious.

“Tess, are you sure? About Max? Because, according to that message, you guys have to be together."

Tess stared at Liz incredulously then began laughing.

“Liz Parker, you are amazing. That message said that we were married in a past life. That we needed to stay together to save that planet. I seriously doubt it would matter if we were together in the biblical sense or not.” Tess stopped laughing abruptly when she noticed that Liz was crying.

“Oh God! I’m so sorry Liz! I wasn’t laughing at you, I swear!”

Tess rounded the table and held Liz while she sobbed. Neither of the girls noticed the air ripple just outside the room. They also didn’t notice when Cole appeared, wearing only his training pants. Then, as abruptly as he had appeared, he disappeared.

Sandy, Troy, Zane and Serena regarded their uncle as he reappeared.

“What’s wrong with Momma?”

Chapter 4

“What’s wrong with Momma?”

When Cole didn’t answer, the children stepped forward in unison.

“What is wrong with our mother Balthazar?”

Cole took a step back in fear. How did these children know his name?

“She… she was just a little upset with something. I’m sure it was nothing.”

The children nodded in tandem before leaving the basement of the manor, a confused Cole in their wake.

Liz, having refused to answer Tess’s query, got ready for bed in silence. How could she tell Tess the truth? How could she tell any of them the truth?

* Liz sat on a deserted beach, tumultuous clouds over a rolling ocean. Her face was in her hands as she wept. The surf lapped her feet, trying in vain to pull her in.

“What’s wrong?”

Liz lifted her head as Cole sat next to her. His arm went around her shoulder as he anchored her, spiritually and physically.

“It’s so hard. Why is it so hard?” she whispered.

“It doesn’t have to be. You could tell them.”

“No. No I can’t. I can’t risk losing them.”

“You don’t know that will happen. Maybe they’ll take it well. I know that Max loves you and Maria and Alex think of you as a sister. They won’t turn from you because of this.”

Before Liz could respond, she found herself being ripped from Cole’s hands by the turbulent wind. Terrified, she screamed. *

End Dream.

Tess rushed into Liz’s room when she heard the scream. She stopped and her jaw dropped when she saw a hysterically sobbing Liz being comforted by Cole. Cole was shirtless and under the covers and Tess could draw only one conclusion. But what was Cole doing in Liz’s bed?

“What the hell is going on?” Tess shouted.

Cole looked up and Liz looked at Cole, finally realising that Cole was in bed with her.

Cole jumped out of the bed and blushed a deep red when he realised he was only wearing a pair of boxers. He disappeared and then reappeared wearing a pair of jeans and shucking on a shirt.

“Ok! I want answers and I want them now!” Tess ordered.

Liz blanched and she looked to Cole for advice and support. He shook his head.

“I can’t, Liz. If you want to continue keeping this a secret, I have to leave for now but… This is killing you. You have to tell them or you’re going to lose them anyway.” Cole was firm in his conviction.

A tear escaped Liz and she looked at Cole, then Tess, a terrified look on her face.

“What are you talking about? Are you and Liz…?”

“NO!” Liz and Cole shouted together before Liz turned to Cole.

“I can’t Cole. I can’t risk it…”

“They knew my name.” Cole interrupted. “The kids knew my real name.”

“They knew my real name and I know for a fact that you didn’t tell them.”

Liz paled and looked to Tess who was still waiting for an answer. Taking a deep breath, Liz made up her mind.

“Cole, get the others. Tess, call everyone and get them over here. We need to talk.”

To be continued…
