Author: Drifter
Rating: R
Disclaimer: This is totally my story. I am only using the actors Jason Behr, Kyle Lowder, Shiri Appleby to play the roles (in terms of the people you picture in your mind when reading the story.) I hope that's allowed????

Summary: please read the intro and if you are intruiged I will post the summary with the first chapter.
Feedback: a must to continue, so pile it on.

Introduction:

I’m no angel. In fact, most of the time I think I’m quite the opposite. I don’t have a sad story to tell, because sympathy is the last thing that I need. All I want from you is an open mind. My words may seem surreal, but they are a matter of fact. If we should ever meet, you will believe.

I’m not a cop, FBI, CIA, or any other faction of the law. In fact, people turn to me when the so-called law turns its back on them. What I do is strictly a matter of survival, seeking justice by bending the rules that bind ordinary law enforcement officials. I answer to only one person, and even he I fear uses me for what I am.

I don’t understand everything, and I have questions of my own – like, why am I here? …my life, my gifts…why do I have them? There must be a reason.

Still, I live by my own philosophy:
“Everything is business. Make nothing personal and nothing can come back to haunt you.”

I know it may seem twisted to many of you, but it’s worked for me so far.
I bring joy to some, and pain to others, but it’s never unjustified.
I work from behind the scenes. It’s safer that way. When no one can identify who you are, no one can turn you in or betray you.

Yes, there are those who wish to destroy me and everything that I represent. I infiltrated them, learned from them, and now they know. I can feel it, so I stay hidden among common men.

They’ve been searching for me as long as I’ve been searching for answers.

I’m not afraid. Whatever they may throw at me I can face.

I just never expected HER….

CHAPTER ONE

She walked into her studio apartment late that evening and spotted the large brown business envelope on the floor almost immediately. The only thing on its cover was her name, N’ya Sorenski – but she knew without any doubt that it was another assignment.
Groaning as she picked it up, she dropped her belongings on the couch and headed to her bedroom.

‘Were they kidding?’ she thought, dropping the envelope on the King sized mattress.
N’ya had just finished a high profile case that had her flying back and forth between New York City and Venezuela. Now she was finally home after six weeks and they already wanted her on another case. Sometimes she hated this job. Working for the Bureau had few advantages and slowly the pros of it all were wearing thin.

The flashing red number on her answering machine caught her attention then and she stretched down to press the play button as she slipped out of her black suede pumps.

‘You have four new messages’ the machine announced.

“Hey sis, what’s up? Can’t you call your brother once in a while? Give me a buzz when you can. We’ll grab lunch.”
N’ya smiled. Alex was so hard to get a hold of when she was available. When she did see him he always said some smart quip like ‘such is the life of a college student’. She did miss him though.

The other two messages seemed to be wrong numbers, but the last one she recognized.

“N’ya, I need you to look over that package I sent you as soon as you get in tonight. We’ll discuss it in my office tomorrow morning at 8am. See you then.”

Short, brief and to the point, that was Special Agent in charge Simmons’ m/o.
‘So much for having a good night’s sleep’ N’ya thought as she headed off to the shower. By the time she got through analyzing that file for briefing tomorrow, she’d barely manage to get enough sleep.

As she stepped under the blast of warm, soothing water, she just hoped that her partner had received an equally “joyous” homecoming.

****************

Later that night…

He stood quietly on the docks as he had been for the past hour, staring out at the luxury yacht anchored not too far away. The occupants stood dancing and drinking unsuspectingly, seemingly in celebration.
The sound of Caribbean music filtered through the air along with the shrill laughter of someone who had a little too much to drink.
He’d wait until they left; he had to.

As if in answer to his thoughts, he watched as the guests filed one by one from the boat. A few minutes later, he watched again as the lights went out. That was his signal.

Closing his eyes, he concentrated, feeling that all too common heat rise within him. This time, he knew where to direct it.

The explosion was enough to rock the harbor. The flames reaching up high enough to engulf what remained of the yacht, as the sounds of sirens soon filled the air.

He looked down at the water reflecting the orange and red glow.

It was done.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

CHAPTER TWO

Darkness surrounded him from every angle as he tried to decipher where he was. Trying to move landed him nowhere but the sharp pain that stung his wrists confirmed that they were locked in what felt like heavy iron chains.
A sudden scream filled the air as a female voice penetrated his thoughts, his body, his heart.
He closed his eyes trying to summon his power. He had to get to her, to save her.
“No!” he heard her scream again, but the more he tried the more distant he felt from the familiar heat that told him his energy was ready to explode.
“No!” her voice came again, more terrified than before.
He struggled uselessly against his bonds, his heart racing in his chest.

“I need you…” The whispered words seemed to come out of nowhere, echoing in his mind and drawing his body to complete stillness.
“Mechi!!!!!” the voice screamed one last time, as the flames engulfed every part of him.

Mechi bolted upright in bed, struggling to catch his breath.
“A dream.” He thought, “It was only a dream.” He whispered, squinting his eyes at first, at the sudden presence of sunlight.

Throwing the bed covers aside, he stood up and started anxiously pacing the room.
“What the hell was that!” he passed his hands through his now wet hair, attempting to calm himself down.

That dream…was so intense. It was like his powers had taken over, and engulfed him!

And that voice? Who did it belong to? What was she afraid of?

More importantly, why was he bonded in chains? Had they found him?

A million and one questions seemed to race through Mechi’s mind before he settled in front of the glass sliding doors that led out onto the balcony. Slowly, as he stared outside, he felt his heart rate begin to slow down.

“It was just a dream.” He repeated, getting lost in the scenery of everyday working people.

It was the incessant beeping of his hand held electronic message pad that brought him back into reality.
‘There would be time to analyze that dream/vision later.’

****************

FBI Headquarters
Sub-level,
Lincoln Square Building – Manhattan.

“Nice of you to finally show up.” The irritating voice of Agent Jensen Landers greeted her in Special Agent Simmon’s office that morning, earning him more than just a look of consternation as N’ya took the seat next to him.

“I’m sorry Sir.” She stated, apologizing to her superior even though she was only off by five minutes. “It wouldn’t happen again.”

“Make sure it doesn’t.” he replied sternly, before looking back down at the opened manila folder that sat on the desk in front of him. “Now, let’s get down to business.”

“For the past seven years, the FBI has been tracking what at first seemed to be random explosions that have resulted in the deaths of over a dozen people. These fires, when investigated seemed to have ignited out of thin air…”

“But that’s impossible.” Jensen interrupted, stating the obvious.

“Yes, and the victims had all been convicted of one crime or other, ranging from battery and drug dealing, to murder.”

“So, we’re thinking renegade arsonist?” Jensen questioned.

“The Apparition.” N’ya stated, as if in recognition. The two men turned their attention to her and Simmons gave a curt nod of affirmation.

“Yes, the Apparition. No one has ever seen him or met him face to face. As you’ve read in the file, he works from a distance. We still have no idea how he triggers these fires since the remains of any electronic devices that could have been used, have yet to be found.”

“But Sir, if I’m not mistaken, this is a Triple O file.” N’ya stated, referring to the set of unsolved cases that have been locked in the FBI Level 4 vault for years now. “Why bring this one up now?”

She watched as the older man with salt and pepper hair bent into a drawer and pull out a newspaper, opening the front page to reveal the headline as he replied,
“Because he’s struck again.”

Drug dealer dies in yacht explosion.

“So what’s the plan?” Agent Landers asked anxiously.

“Since we can’t track him down from the outside. We’ll have to draw him out his way.”

“How?” N’ya asked, somehow knowing the answer even before it was confirmed.

“You’re going undercover.” Agent Simmons stated, “N’ya we need you to go in as the victim desperately in search of justice for her parents’ murder.”

Suddenly, she seemed to be propelled back in time to a night all to fresh in her memory; of a young girl hiding, struggling to hold in her sobs, hearing gunshots, watching red pools stain the carpeted floor…and fearing for her own life as that of her parents slowly slipped away.

“No. I can’t.” she stated, before getting up and heading for the door.

AUTHOR'S NOTE:

I'm sorry that this took a while, but my muse was being stubborn. *tongue*
Please keep the feedback coming, I love reading them all!*bounce**bounce*
If this story goes the way I hope, Max and Liz's names will be used down the line.
And for those of you who weren't sure on the pronunciation of Mechi...think " Meh'kai"...I hope that helps! *big*
