Part 1: The Dream
She stood on the edge of the cliff, her dark brown hair whipping around her face in the wind.
He stood about one hundred yards away, his bare feet sinking into the cool desert sand.
Though she had her back to him, he could tell she was crying through their ever-present connection.
As he tried to determine why, he saw her kneel down next to the black book bag at her feet. his eyes widened when they fell upon the knife, its razor-sharp edge gleaming in the moonlight.
She once again stood up and stared up at the clear sky. He began toward her, but stopped when she began to speak, his heart clenching with surprise, dread, pain, and sorrow.
“I love you, Max!” Liz Parker yelled at the stars, bringing the knife to her wrist and pressing the sharp edge into her delicate skin. She bit her bottom lip as a thin red line appeared on her wrist and began to roll down her arm.
“I love you, too,” Max Evans murmured, taking another step toward her.
Liz didn’t seem to have heard him. She continued to stare at the dark sky above.
“I love you, and I can’t do it anymore!” Another line of blood appeared on Liz’s arm. “I can’t deal with pushing you away anymore. You won’t listen to what I say, or pay attention to what you see with your own eyes. I’ll obviously have to die before you’ll go to Tess.” Another red line of blood. “And if that’s what I have to do to save you and the others,” she cried as she raised the knife again, “then so be it.” And she flung the knife down toward her wrist.
“LIZ!!!” Max screamed, rushing toward her as she began to collapse to the ground.
And then there was nothing but black.

Part 2: The Realization
Max’s eyes snapped open. He sat up and stared around his room, taking in the clothes on the floor and his disorderly desk. He groggily stretched his arms over his head, trying to figure out why he’d woken so early.
Then the memory of the dream forced its way into Max’s sleep-fogged mind. He was immediately wide awake, his body once again breaking out in a cold sweat.
What was with that dream? He’d had some very messed up dreams, but never one where Liz, nor anybody else, was trying to kill themselves. Why would he start now?
Then it hit him. He’d been in Liz’s dream. That’s what it was. And she’d been upset. Very upset. But that didn’t make sense; she was happy. Happy without him.
Max felt his stomach clench painfully. The memory of seeing her in bed with Kyle Valenti was still fresh in his mind, no matter how hard he tried to block it out. She loved Kyle now, not him.
But that didn’t make sense, either. She’d said she loved him and that she was doing what she was to save him and the rest of the group. But what was she doing? And why?
Max shook his head, not knowing the answers and still to sleepy to really think about it.
Standing, Max walked to the door and down the hall. A shower would help him wake up and think. And once he was finished, he was going to go confront Liz about what he’d seen.

Part 3: The Visitor
Liz sat straight up in bed, sobs escaping her lips and tears rolling down her cheeks. That was the third time this week! She was tired of watching her self-inflicted death.
She knew it was some kind of premonition, but she refused to think about it. It was too big, too complicated, too close to home.
Shaking her head, Liz got out of bed and started toward her bathroom. As she passed her window, she noticed someone on her balcony. Doubling back, she found that it was a thin, curly-brown-haired girl.
The girl was asleep on the lounge chair where Liz usually wrote in her journal. Sleep made her look as serene and innocent as a five-year-old, but in body she looked about sixteen.
As Liz watched, the girl stirred. Her lashes fluttered, and, rolling toward the window where Liz stood, she opened a pair of blue-gray eyes.
Looking up, the girl looked up and seemed startled to see Liz, but she quickly recovered. Rising, the girl walked steadily to the window, her blue duffle bag in tow.
Liz, without thinking twice, pushed open the window. The two girls regarded each other curiously, looking each other over.
Liz noticed the other girl as taller than her, about 5’8”, and that she was wearing only a tattered pair of jeans and a navy blue sweater over a baby-blue baby tee.
Finally, Liz spoke. “Who... who are you?” she asked quietly, dropping her eyes for a moment before once again pinning them on the uncomfortable teen on the other side of the windowsill.
“The name’s Angel. Angel Thomas. I needed someplace to stay and I was pretty sure you wouldn’t notice if I crashed on your balcony for the night, but,” Angel shrugged, “I guess I was wrong.”
Liz stared at Angel for another moment, the spoke again, her words tumbling over each other. “How old are you? Where did you come from? Why aren’t you sleeping in your bed at your own home?” Liz blurted in a single breath.
Angel took her time answering. “I’m sixteen and a half, I’m from St. Louis, Missouri, and I don’t have a home to sleep in.” Angel sighed. “At least, not anymore.”
Liz immediately regretted her blurting when she saw the younger girl’s eyes cloud over with pain. “Hey! I have an idea,” she said, deciding she needed to give normal life a chance, no matter what was going on in her life at the moment. “How about if you stay here with me for a while and work in the Cafe until you have enough money to get your own place?” Liz suggested, a small smile coming to her lips. “It may take some major persuasion, but I’m sure my parents won’t mind too much.”
Angel’s eyes widened slightly, the clouds leaving her eyes. “You’d do that for me, even though you don’t even know me?” Liz nodded. “Alright. That sounds great!” Angel did a tuck jump, then blushed. “Sorry,” she apologized. “Looks like my cheerleader tendencies are coming back.”
“No problem,” Liz replied, once again looking Angel over. Usually she wouldn’t trust strangers of any kind, but Angel seemed different somehow. Liz felt like she’d known her forever....
Liz shook her head, trying to focus her mind on a way to get her parents to let Angel stay instead of on why she was doing this.
“C’mon,” Liz insisted, a grin breaking across her face. “We’ve got some negotiating to do.”
And with that, the girls left the room.

Part 4: The New Girl
Max sped toward the Crashdown Cafe in his black jeep, trying to think of a way to get Liz to talk to him. he was tired of her avoiding him and pretending she didn’t love him anymore. he knew she did; he could feel it. he could feel her, this morning more than ever. And though it was puzzling, Max liked the fact that he could feel her emotions.
Max suddenly felt a burst of happiness from Liz. He’d been getting a lot of feelings from her this morning--fear, surprise, apprehension, sadness. It was starting to worry him.
A few minutes later, Max pulled up in front of the Crashdown. Hopping out, he strolled determinedly into the restaurant.
His eyes went straight to Liz, standing behind the counter laughing with a waitress that seemed familiar, though he‘d never seen before. He scowled for a moment in thought, trying to place her, then, shrugging, slid into his regular booth.
The new girl noticed Max first and pointed him out to Liz. Liz smiled at him, and, motioning for the other girl to follow, came over to him.
The restaurant was pretty dead for a Saturday morning, so Liz and the other girl slid in across from Max without hesitation.
“Hey,” Liz said, the smile still on her face, though deep sadness shown through her eyes.
“Hey,” Max replied, looking her in the eye and allowing her to read his question.
Liz turned her gaze to the girl next to her and gestured at her. “This is Angel Thomas. She’s new in town and she’s gonna be staying with me and working in the cafe until she gets enough money to move out on her own.”
Max furrowed his brow at Liz briefly before plastering a small smile on his face and shaking Angel’s hand. “Nice to meet you, Angel.”
Angel nodded, her gray-blue eyes widening innocently. “It’s nice to meet you, too, Max.”
Max immediately began to recoil. How could she possibly know his name? Liz touched his hand briefly, getting his attention. The gentle brush of her skin against him calmed him down.
“I’ve been talking about you and the others all morning,” Liz explained softly.
Max’s tensed muscles immediately relaxed. Liz had always been good at seeing through people. If she trusted Angel, chances were Angel was totally trustworthy.
Liz’s eyes met Max’s again, and they let their eyes whisper words back and forth that they were sure they’d never again be allowed to speak aloud. Finally, Liz glanced away.
“We need to get back to work,” she murmured, avoiding Max’s eyes.
Just then, the bell on the door rang, proving Liz’s words true.
“We’ll talk to you later.” With that, Liz stood up and walked behind the counter.
Angel stood also, but stayed behind for another moment. “Be alert,” she warned Max.
He scowled at her. “What?”
Angel gave him a pleading look. “Please, Max,” she begged, her voice rising. “Do as I ask. I know you don’t trust me, that you think I’m here to destroy your life like Tess did, but I’m not. You have to believe me. I worried about Liz. Her aura-” Angel stopped, then changed her sentence. “I can’t tell you why, but I am. She’s deeply troubled and only you can help her.” Angel’s eyes met Max’s stunned look. “Please, Max, stay alert.”
And without another word or a backward glance, she turned on her heal and returned to the counter.
Max stared after her, then, shaking his head, watched Liz as she moved about the restaurant and waited for her to take her break.
They had a lot to talk about.

Part 5: The Incident
Angel looked over at Max from the corner of her eye and sighed in relief when she found him keeping an eye on Liz. Just like Zan used to...
She ducked her head as she felt heat rush to her cheeks. She’d always longed for someone to look at her the way Zan looked at Lisaura. Unfortunately, her life had ended before she’d gotten her wish.
Zan had always loved her like a sister, which had been appropriate, seeing as to the fact that she, Summer, had been Lisaura’s younger sister.
Lonnie had been betrothed to Rath, although they both detested the match.
Then there had been Ava, Summer and Aura’s older stepsister.
Ava had always been deathly jealous of Aura. Aura was beautiful, powerful, and loved by many, including the king-to-be. When Zan asked for Aura’s had in marriage, Summer’s parents had eagerly agreed. Summer had been happy and excited. Ava, however, had been enraged.
Even now, on Earth in a reincarnated body, Angel could remember going into Lisaura’s room the night before the wedding and every word they exchanged during their very last conversation on Antar.
::FLASH::
“Aura?”
“Yes, Summer,” Lisaura replied, trying to get her diamond earrings into her ears and failing because she was trembling so badly.
“How come I can’t come with you and Zan to the island?” Summer asked.
Lisaura, finally giving up on the earrings, turned around and ruffled her seventeen-year-old sister’s hair. “You know it’s against tradition, otherwise Zan and I would take you,” she replied. Lisaura turned back to her mirror and sighed in frustration as her eyes came to rest on the abandoned diamond studs.
Summer immediately stepped forward and, picking up the studs, put them into Aura’s ears with relative grace. Then she fluffed her older sister’s hair and looked over Aura’s shoulder in the mirror. “You look great, Aura,” Summer told her.
Lisaura turned around and hugged Summer. “Thank you,” she murmured back. “I’m glad that at least one of my sisters is happy for me.”
When Lisaura released her, Summer shrugged. “Don’t worry, Aura,” Summer said with a reassuring smile. “Ava’ll get over it.”
Lisaura smiled. “I hope so.”
Suddenly her head swiveled to the window. “Oh!” Lisaura cried. “I’m going to be late!” She gave Summer a quick hug and kissed her forehead. “I’ll see you tonight, okay?”
“Okay,” Summer answered. “Bye Aura! Have fun!”
“Bye!” And Lisaura was gone, never to return to her make-up room, or the palace, again.
::FLASH::
Angel shook her head. Now was not the time to be zoning. She needed to stay focused, otherwise she’d have major problems later.
Looking around, Angel noticed Max gazing at her with a perplexed expression. For a moment, Angel was confused. Then it hit her.
He could feel her. That’s why he was looking at her like that.
Shifting her focus for a moment, Angel concentrated on herself and succeeded in cloaking her emotions.
When she reopened her eyes, Max gave her a funny look, then went back to watching every move Liz made.
Letting out her breath, Angel grabbed a rag out from beneath the counter and began wiping down the counter.
Then it happened. A man in a mask walked in, pulled out a gun, and fired a single shot at the back of the restaurant, leaving Liz Parker bleeding on the floor, a bullet hole in her stomach.

Part 6: The Truth
Max was instantly on his feet and over to Liz. Going down on his knees, Max ripped open Liz’s uniform as a feeling of deja vu settled into his stomach.
He could hear Angel telling people to leave the restaurant quickly and pulling the blinds. The second Max heard the lock snap closed, he placed his hand over the bullet wound. Liz automatically looked into his eyes and he was in.

Then came the sound of a second heartbeat. Although Max was confused beyond compare, he forced himself to concentrate on saving Liz’s life.
Carefully, he broke the bullet apart and fused the veins, arteries, tissues, muscles, and skin back together. Raising his hand, he looked down at Liz’s stomach. It was whole again, though a single silver handprint glowed on her torso.
His eyes wondered back to her face. The color was returning to it. He let out a small sigh. God, why hadn’t she just told him what was going on?...
Max’s head snapped up when he heard the click of heels on the tile floor.
Angel was walking toward them.
*Oh, no.* Max groaned inwardly. *Angel. What am I going to do?*
Standing up, he tried to distract her. “Look, Angel, I know what this-” Max began.
Angel silenced him with a wave of her hand, her eyes meeting his. “Don’t worry, Max,” she said, her voice suddenly sounding much older and more mature than 16. “I know who and what you are, and I plan to protect you, not expose you. Don’t believe anything Ava... I mean, Tess, tells you. She’s the enemy, and she wants nothing more than to destroy you, Liz, and the others. So be wary of her. Be alert.”
Max stared at Angel with a slack jaw. His mouth snapped closed when he heard Liz moan.
Angel was immediately at her side. “Are you alright?” she asked as she dropped to her knees across from Max, next to Liz. “Max healed you and everything, but-”
Liz’s eyes widened when Angel told her this information, and she sat up with a start. “What?” She looked from Angel to Max. Liz could tell by the look confused and happy look on his face that it was true. He’d healed her-again. And he’d seen everything.
With a sob, Liz jumped to her feet and rushed thru the swinging doors into the back room and up the stairs to her room.

Part 7: The Secret
Max stared at the still-swinging door to the back room for a moment before taking a step toward it, determined to talk to her, to comfort her. Angel, however, had other ideas. She grabbed Max’s arm, pulling him back beside her with surprising strength.
“I’d advise you to let her be for a little while,” she warned, looking him right in the eye. “Let her calm down. She’s been thru a lot in the past three weeks, and this just added to the stress. Let her think for a little while, sort out her feelings, before you go charging up the stairs.”
Max was in no mood to listen to reason, though. He tried to shake Angel off. She dropped his arm. Then Angel shoved him.
Surprised, Max flew backwards and onto the table of his regular booth. He lay there for a moment, trying to comprehend how a skinny girl like Angel could shove him hard enough to make him airborne.
When no logical answer came to him, he sat up and looked at Angel.
Her hand was raised and glowing, her face drawn and angry. Finally, as Max looked on, the glowing diminished and disappeared and Angel dropped her arm back to her side, her face paling as it dawned on her what she’d just done.
Dropping to her knees on the cold tile floor, Angel bowed her head. “I’m sorry, your Majesty. I let my anger get out of hand again. Please forgive me,” Angel begged, her voice small and vulnerable, although her shoulders remained squared.
Max stared at her in silence. “Wha-what did you call me?” he asked, bewildered.
Angel raised her head slowly. “I called you ‘you Majesty.’ You are the king, aren’t you?”
Max shook his head. “That’s what I was told, but you told me not to believe anything Tess said-”
“Ah. So she did tell you a little of the truth,” Angel murmured. Then, to Max, she said, “You are the king. I can tell by just looking at you. Just like I can tell....” Angel trailed off.
“Tell what?” Max asked.
“It doesn’t matter.” Angel twirled a strand of brown hair around her finger. “I can prove you are the king.”
“How?”
Angel held out her hand, palm out.
Max gazed at it for a moment, then put his hand against hers and met her blazing blue-gray eyes.
He was hit with memories, new and old.
:FLASH:
Summer (Angel’s former self), Lonnie, Ava, and Aura, a girl who looked remarkably like Liz, in long flowing dresses made of silk.
:FLASH:
Zan and Rath, in tailored suits, standing under a white pavilion.
:FLASH:

:FLASH:
Angel in her old room in St. Louis, typing furiously on a laptop.
:FLASH:
Aura standing in front of a mirror, in a long white wedding dress, a dreamy look on her face.
:FLASH:
Ava, Aura, and Summer standing together on a staircase, smiling for a photograph.
:FLASH:
Zan in another tailored suit, this one white, waving frantically, grinning.
:FLASH:
A tall man in a ski mask crouched over two adults, a gun in his hand.
:FLASH:
A bus to Roswell.
:FLASH:
Liz’s balcony.
:FLASH:
Liz asleep in her bed.
:FLASH:
Angel in her waitress uniform.
:FLASH:
Summer and Lonnie running thru the front gates of a castle with another girl, Nickie, screaming, Ava in close pursuit with a familiar looking-battle axe.
:FLASH:
Lonnie lying on her stomach in the entryway of the castle.
:FLASH:
Nickie standing in front of Summer and telling her to run, to get away....
Angel dropped her arm to her side again, her eyes remaining locked with Max’s for another moment before dropping. She turned and walked to the counter, dropped onto a stool, and put her head in her hands.
“Now you see why you can’t trust Tess, trust anyone you don’t know?” Angel asked. “You shouldn’t even be trusting me.”
Max opened his mouth to reply, but Angel held up her hand. “Now you’ve seen. It was Ava who killed us on Antar. She’s trying to get rid of us, and the only way to get all of us out of the way is by destroying you, and she knows she can’t destroy you until either you’re over Liz or Liz is dead. That’s how the world will end if we don’t do something.”
Angel was beginning to get hysterical. “And it’s still going to end because I can’t get Liz to listen to me.”
“Wh-who was he?” Max asked. “That future version of me?”
“One of Tess’ creations. She’s using him to keep Liz away from you, and it’s working.” Angel lifted her head and stared a Max. “You have to help me. Now that you know the truth, you have to help me get her to listen.”
“How?” Max questioned in exasperation. “She won’t even talk to me when she has to.”
“You’ll know how,” Angel answered. She stood up and walked to the double doors. “you’ll have to know. The whole universe is counting on you.” And with that, Angel pushed thru the doors to the back room and disappeared.

Part 8: The Meeting
Angel slowly and carefully climbed the stairs to the apartment Liz shared with her parents. she was worried abut Liz, her dear sister, and Max, her sister’s true love and future husband. Tess had really shaken things up in the short time she’d been in Roswell. Angel just wished that she’d been there when Tess was telling all her lies.
With a soft sigh, Angel opened the door to Liz’s bedroom and walked in quietly. *It’s a good thing her parents are out of town for the week*
Liz lay on her bed, asleep, still clad in her waitress uniform, tear-stains apparent on her cheeks. She was obviously restless in her slumber for her hands clawed at the bedspread every so often and her head moved back in forth, her face contracting in pain and horror.
Walking to the edge of the bed, Angel sat down on the floor and laid one hand on Liz’s forehead. Then, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, Angel concentrated on her body, forcing it to relax, until she felt herself float into the state between sleep and wakefulness.
*****
Angel found herself in the middle of chaos. Standing in the corner of the Crashdown, Angel watched as Liz was shot in the stomach on that fateful September day in ‘99 and Max rushed to save her life as people escaped thru the front doors.
Then the scene shifted to the pod chamber, showing Liz watching Max listen to the hologram of his mother. Angel scowled. *That’s not how it happened....* Her thoughts were halted by the dreamscape once again whirling to life.
When the world stopped spinning, Angel’s mouth fell open. An older version of Max was speaking to Liz, telling her that their love would cause the end of the world.
Highly annoyed, Angel decided she was tired of watching Liz suffer thru these lies yet again. With a deep breath, Angel turned “Future Max” into Tess. Tess opened her eyes and gasped. So did Liz. Then Tess scrambled out the window. Angel smiled in satisfaction and concentrated again, searching Liz’s brain for a good, happy memory. Finding Max and Liz’s first kiss, Angel brought it to Liz’s attention. The scene immediately changed to Liz’s balcony, the two dreamers talking quietly.
Smiling, Angel turned and concentrated again. A moment later, she was out of the dream.

Angel opened her eyes and yawned. *Well, I should probably try to get a hold of either Aaron or Nicola.* The group needed help. The more help, the better.
Angel lifted her head and looked out the window. Then her jaw tightened. Standing on the other side was none other than Tess Harding, her eyes wide with horror and surprise.

Part 9: The Attempt
Angel smirked and, standing, walked to the window.
Tess finally found her voice. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice harsh.
“Cleaning up after you, as usual,” Angel replied cockily, reaching the window and placing her hands on the sill. “Now, what are you doing here? Trying to make more trouble?”
Tess opened her mouth, then closed it again, locking ehr teeth together.
Finally she answered, “I want you all dead!” Tess reached thru the window and shot a beam of light toward Liz’s bed.
Tess was quick, but Angel was quicker. She threw up a force field in front of Tess’s hand. The ray bounced off of the sheild and into the sky, narrowly missing Tess’s blond curls.
Tess growled in anger. “How dare you,” she muttered nastily thru clenched teeth. “I could have you killed-”
“No,” Angel interrupted. She raised her hand. “Only the king and queen have that power.”
“I am queen,” Tess shot back.
“You are not.”
Tess smirked. “Wanna bet?”
Just then a hand pressed against Tess’s head and Angel noticed Max standing next there, his face contorted in hatred.
“Yeah, Tess, I do,” Angel replied, smiling into Tess’s frightened eyes. “I could use some extra money.” She gestured to Max’s hand. “I’m sure Max will agree with me, although he has no memory of our other life. You can ask him if you like, though, since you two are so very close.” With that Angel returned to Liz’s side.
Liz’s eyes fluttered open as Angel settled onto the side of the bed. “What’s happening?”
Angel shook her head and smiled softly. “Nothing you need to worry about. Me and Max’ll take care of it. Now, go back to sleep.”
Liz made a face and began to sit up.
MAX!!! Angel’s telepathy was very strong, and she knew it would come out louder than she meant it to, but she didn’t expect Max to actually cringe. He looked at her inquiringly out of the corner of his eye as he continued to yell at Tess.
Get in here. Liz is waking up and we need to explaining some things to her. So just get rid of Tess. I’ll tell you everything later.
Are you sure Tess can’t get to Liz? Max asked uncertainly.
MAX!!!!!
ALRIGHT! I’m coming!
Angel watched as Max threatened Tess and dropped his hand. Tess bolted to the ladder and climbed down, trying to get away as quickly as possible from Angel and Max and their death stares.

Part 10: The Discussion
As soon as Tess was gone, Max climbed thru the window and walked over to the bed.
“Are you okay?” he asked Liz, lowering himself onto the edge of the bed.
“I’m gonna... um... go downstairs and clean up the restaurant,” Angel said hastily, standing and strolling out the door, closing it behind her with a quiet click.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Liz replied from her spot again the headboard, her head down.
Max could tell Liz was trying to keep him from seeing her face, looking into her eyes. He placed his thumb under her chin and gently forced her to lift her head. “Liz?”
Her eyes began to fill with tears. “Max, please. Don’t do this to me again. I can’t...” Liz trailed off as a salty ball of sadness and frustration formed in her throat.
“Can’t what? Tell me you don’t love me anymore? Pretend you slept with Kyle?”
Max asked. When Liz just stared at him in surprise and horror, he continued. “It wasn’t real, Liz,” he told her, letting his fingers drift into her hair. “He wasn’t real. He was a mindwarp, courtesy of Tess.”
Liz’s eyes searched his. When all she found was sincerity, love and hope, she knew he was telling her the truth.
“H-how do you know?” she questioned, her voice thick.
Max hesitated. Should he really give away Angel’s identity? But Angel was staying with Liz; she had a right to know. It wasn’t like he could keep something from her for more than a few hours at most anyway.
“Angel told me,” he admitted simply.
“But how could Angel possibly-” Liz stopped abruptly, her eyes widening. “She’s... she’s...” She lifted her finger and pointed at the ceiling.
Max nodded.
Liz’s eyes filled. “But... that means...” She flung her arms around him and pressed her face into his shoulder. “God, Max. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry...” she sobbed.
Max’s arms circled her, pulling her into his lap. “It’s okay, he soothed, rocking her as he ran is fingers thru her hair and cradled her head against his chest.
Liz’s head jerked up. “No it’s not!” She swallowed. “I should have known. You’d never do something like that to me. Never. But she made it so believable, so real...” She stared up into Max’s hazel eyes. “How could you possibly be like this? After I betrayed you like that, lied to you...”
“Because I knew you’d never do anything like that to ME, Liz. Your heart’s too big, your love, OUR love, too pure for it to be true.” Max stroked her cheek softly, his eyes searching hers.
Liz’s sobbing had subsided by now, but tears were still flowing down her cheeks at his words. “H-he said the world would end if I didn’t... didn’t make you fall out of love... with me. I-I couldn’t bare t-to see you so sad,” Liz told Max, referring to the mirage Tess had created.
Max pulled her tighter against him as she started sobbing in earnest. “Shh... It’s okay. I’m here... I’ll always be here...” Max continued his tender murmurings of love and affection until her crying stopped completely.
Then Liz lifted her head and looked at Max.
Their eyes met and held. Liz leaned forward slightly, wanting to be closer, to fall into Max’s soul. Then their foreheads were touching and she realized Max had done the same thing she had. She watched as his eyes lowered. Liz could feel her lips begin to throb as Max’s eyes returned to hers, glazed and sparkling with desire.
Liz leaned forward another fraction of an inch. Max copied her, and their lips brushed.
When Max began to pull back, she moaned, putting her arms around his shoulders to keep him close. Max didn’t need an engraved invitation. He closed the distance and brushed her lips again. Then, with a moan of his own, he closed his lips over hers completely.
When they came up for air, Max gasped out, “God, I missed you, Liz.” He buried his face in her hair and breathed in her scent. He could feel Liz’s slightly labored breathing against his neck, and he smiled, knowing he was the one who had caused it.
Finally, he pulled back and kissed her forehead lovingly. “You better get some sleep.” He lay her back down on the bed and began to stand up.
Liz grabbed his arm, her eyes wide and frightened. “Don’t leave,” she pleaded, her voice trembling.
“Never, angel. I love you. I won’t leave,” he promised. “Not ever.” He leaned down and gave her one more kiss, being careful not to deepen it. “I’m just going to go help Angel with clean-up.”
Liz sat up. “I’ll help, too.” She attempted to stand, but stumbled.
Max caught her easily and looked down into her chocolate eyes with a small, half-amused, half-tender smile. “I think you should lay back down. You don’t have enough strength to be up yet.”
Liz started to argue, but Max kissed her and said, “Don’t start.”
So Liz, with a sigh, allowed Max to help her back to the bed and tuck her in. Once Liz had closed her eyes and her breathing had become slow and even, Max set off to find Liz’s new friend.

Part 11: The Enemy
Angel heard him before she saw him. Annoyed, she turned.
“What do you want?” she snarled.
Kivar circled her slowly. “You’re more beautiful than I recall, Summer.” He started to run his finger down her arm, but Angel shook him off.
“Go away,” Angel growled, giving a death glare. “It won’t work this time. Isabel knows you’re evil. So do I.”
“Yes,” Kivar admitted. He leaned in close. “But does you lovely sister?” he asked, his breath warm against her ear.
Angel spun toward him, her hands curled into fists and glowing a soft blue. “Stay away from her,” she muttered thru clenched teeth.
“Or what?” he challenged. “You’ll sick the king on me?”
Before Angel could reply, Max came thru the swinging doors. “Hey, Angel, I-” He stopped when he saw Kivar. Angel watched as his face fell into a scowl, then contorted with fury. “YOU!” His hand came up with surprising speed.
“Max, no!” Angel cried. But it was too late.
Kivar jumped to the left, the beam barely missing him. His eyes narrowed in annoyance. “I’ll see you again soon, King Zan,” Kivar told Max. Then he vanished.
Max turned to Angel. “How-”
“Go call everyone,” Angel interrupted, her eyes on the place Kivar had just been. “We need to have a meeting-tonight.”

Part 12: The Revelation
Liz stared around her balcony. They were there- Max, Michael, Isabel, Alex, and Maria. “The Original Six,” as Alex had taken to calling them after Tess and Kyle had joined the teenaged part of the group. Of course, now Tess was out and Angel... Liz wasn’t sure what was up with her.
Max had come back upstairs about ten minutes after he left, tiptoeing into her room.
“I’m awake,” she’d told him, giggling when he jumped.
He’d spun around and she’d stopped laughing. His face had been pale and it’d been obvious that he had been spooked. Badly. And not just because of her.
“What happened?” she’d asked.
Max had just told her that they need to have a meeting. That night.
“What? Why?” Liz had asked, her voice colored with panic.
“Don’t worry, you’ll know soon,” and a kiss had been Max’s reply.
Now it was eight thirty and they were waiting for Kyle to show up so they could start.
On cue, Kyle’s head appeared above the railing. He climbed onto the balcony and took a seat on the ledge.
They sat there silently for a moment, then Max began, “There’s some stuff you guys need to-”
“Don’t worry, Max, I’ll take care of it this time.” Everybody’s heads swiveled to the window as Angel climbed thru.
Max sighed in relief, Isabel gasped, Maria just stared, and Alex and Kyle gaped.
Isabel nudged Alex and his mouth snapped shut. Kyle’s, however, continued to hang open.
Angel looked around uncomfortably. “What?”
Liz cleared her throat. “You guys, this is Angel Thomas, my new houseguest.”
“Hello,” Angel said, looking at each of the members of the group in turn.
“So, what’s this all about?” Michael asked, annoyed, returning his attention to Max.
“Uh, I’m running this meeting, Michael,” Angel said.
Michael’s jaw dropped. “How in the hell do you know my name?!”
Angel shrugged. “I just do. I know Max and Liz.” She pointed at each teen as she stated their name. “Alex and Isabel. You and Maria. And Kyle.” Angel’s eyes met Kyle’s and she gasped. Everyone was surprised by the intensity between them; it was almost as powerful as Max and Liz’s shared looks.
Angel finally broke away from Kyle’s heated gaze and turned back to the rest of the group. “I’m just gonna go straight to the point,” she announced. “I’m... like Max. I’m from....” She pointed up.
Michael gave a harsh bark of laughter. “Is this some kind of a joke?”
Angel’s hand shot up and out in Michael’s direction, glowing. “What do you think?” she asked, slowly dropping her hand back to her side.
Everyone’s mouths, minus Max and Liz’s, dropped open.
“Bu-but, I thought there were only four of you!” Maria cried.
Angel looked at her with a small smile. “Seven, actually. Three protectors: Nicola Garner, a girl I know in St. Louis; Tess Harding, the traitor; and me. Then the Royal Four: Max Evans, the king; Isabel Evans, the princess; Michael Guerin, the second in command; and... one other, the queen.” Angel’s eyes scanned the group, lingering on Liz. She quickly pulled her eyes away. *It isn’t your secret to tell* she rationalized. *They’ll know soon enough.*
Shaking her head to clear it of stray thoughts, Angel decided they should know the truth. At least, what she could tell them without revealing Liz’s secret.
“I’m going to tell you the real story of what happened on Antar,” Angel started. “It’s really long and involved, but at least it’s true.”
Taking a deep breath, she began.
“About seventy earth years ago, Antar was almost completely perfect. It had its share of crime and poverty, but most of us got along.
“We had a grand kingdom and a great king. He had a handsome son and two lovely daughters by the names of Zan, Vilandra, and Nikolaria.
“Zan had hazel eyes and dark brown hair that looked almost black. When his father fell ill, realized he was going to have to take over the planet sooner than planned and he began learning as much as he could, asking for help from his sisters.
“Then there were the girls. Both were blonde, but Lonnie had dark hazel eyes while Nicki had icy blue ones. They were very beautiful, but not the most beautiful of the females on our planet.
“The only girl that exceeded the other two’s beauty was Lisaura. She had brown hair and eyes like chocolate. Even though she was beautiful, she was very gentle. She was the most powerful being on the planet, other than me.
“I was Summer, Aura’s younger sister and protector. I was also to protect Zan after the wedding, but it never happened because of....” Angel stopped. “Wait. I’m getting ahead of myself.”
Then she continued. “Aura and I were very close. She took me everywhere, and Zan loved me to death. He was the one who suggested I become he and Aura’s protector. I was tall, limber, flexible, and extremely powerful. So I started training.
“While I was away from home, my stepsister, Ava, came back from one of the moons. She was betrothed to the young governor, much to her rage, because she’d lost her chance with Zan.
“She’d always been jealous of our group. Zan, Aura, Lonnie, Nicki, and I had formed a tight bond to each other when we were very young, and Ava, we found our later, turned against us because of that jealousy.
“Lonnie was betrothed to Ava’s cousin and Zan’s best friend, Rath. He would become second-in-command and control Antar’s armed forces.
“Rath and Lonnie detested the match.” Angel giggled despite herself. “They’d pretend to be lovey-dovey around their parents, but just sit and talk when they were alone.
“The night before the wedding...” Angel hesitated, then continued sadly, “Aura and Zan were to go to Midnight Island where they would be blessed by the Sacret Stones, three powerful, glowing stones that had been there for generations.” Angel swallowed. “We never saw them again before the rest of us died.”
Angel took several deep breaths, trying to calm herself. Everyone sat silently and waited for her to finish.
Getting hold of herself, Angel went on. “I heard Kivar and his troops coming, so I ran down the hallway to Lonnie’s room. It was empty. I then ran into the courtyard and found Nicki. She motioned for me to follow her. I did. We found Lonnie right outside the gate of the castle. We attempted to question her, but she ignored us, staring down the avenue. Her eyes widened suddenly, and I turned to see Ava running toward us, Rath’s battle axe in hand.” Angel choked. “She’d obviously just come from killing him.
“Nicki and I grabbed Lonnie and ran back to the castle, but we were headed off by more traitors. They surrounded us, and we could do nothing but wait for Ava to arrive. She did, grinning, and began telling us how she’d enjoyed killing Tobias and Rath, and how she was going to enjoy killing us also. Nicki, Lonnie, and I were killed quickly with Rath’s battle axe. The axe was the only reason I didn’t attack her; my powers were useless against it. The only way to kill the person with the axe is to somehow get the axe away from them or to get them in the back. Neither was possible, so we all died.”
Tears were running down Angel’s cheeks now She wiped them away roughly and looked around the circle.
The whole group looked pained. Everyone sat there silently, either in awe or in tears or both.
Finally, Alex broke the silence. “Do you know where Aura is?” he asked quietly.
“Yes, actually,” Angel replied. Her eyes scanned the group again. Liz’s face had paled and she was staring at Angel pleadingly. Angel gave Liz a reassuring smile as she continued. “But I can’t tell you who she is yet. I can only tell you that you do know her and you may not be surprised.”
Angel watched out of the corner of her eye as Liz sighed in relief and, turning, started torward the window. She suddenly stopped and turned back.
“I’d advise everyone to be careful,” Angel warned. “Tess is officially out for blood, and none of us are safe.” Angel looked at Kyle, trying to ignore the tingles that resulted from Kyle’s glances. “You shouldn’t go home tonight.” She turned to Alex. “Alex, could you-”
“Got it,” Alex interrupt, waving his had dismissively. “He can stay with me.” He turned to Kyle and fluttered his eyelashes. “I always wanted to spend the night with a big, strong man,” Alex said in a throaty, feminine voice, again fluttering his lashes.
That finally broke the tension. The group laughed for a good two minutes before finally beginning to calm down.
“Well, the meeting is over,” Angel announced breathlessly. “I’d advise everyone to be with someone tonight.”
Michael smirked and looked a Maria suggestively. She slapped his arm.
“That’s not what she meant!”
Everyone cracked up again.
“Okay. Okay, okay!” Liz called breathlessly. She stood up and pointed at the ladder. “Get going. Some of us actually need to sleep.”
Laughing and catcalling at Max and Liz, Alex, Maria, Michael, Isabel, and Kyle said their good-byes and left, leaving Angel alone with Max and Liz once again.

Part 13: The Need
Angel, Max, and Liz climbed back into Liz’s room. They were still a little worried about the Tess situation, and Liz was anxious about Max finding out her little secret before she wanted him to.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” Angel told them, yawning. “I’m going to hit the sack.” And she walked out, closing the door behind her.
Max wrapped his arms around Liz’s waist and pulled her back against him, pressing his lips to side of neck.
Liz let her head fall against his chest, and a sigh escaped her lips. If only Tess had never come.... Her eyes drifted closed as memories of Zan’s lips on her bare skin washed thru her. It’s been so perfect that first time, a time before Ava started her trouble....
Liz twisted around in Max’s arms and looked up at him. His eyes went to her mouth, and Liz licked her lips slowly, seductively.
With a groan, Max kissed her, sliding his tongue past her lips to tease the back of her throat.
Liz moaned, putting her arms around his neck and shifting closer. This produced another deep, husky groan from Max. He tightened his arms around her, lifting her into his body.
*Oh, God* Liz thought, *I want him so badly.*
Even when she’d walked away from Max in the desert, she’d known that Zan’s mother, Antar’s queen, was talking about her and not Tess. But, Liz had thought, maybe if Max married Tess instead, everything would be different. Things would go back to the way they were before the war.
Obviously, she’d been wrong. Tess had still wanted the whole group dead, even after she’d gotten hold of Max.
Liz made a sudden decision. *I’m going to tell him. He deserves to know the truth about me and the rest of what happened on Antar.*
Liz slowly pulled away, putting just enough distance between their lips to talk coherently. “Max,” she whispered seriously, “there’s something I need to-”
Max leaned down and kissed the side of her neck, the sensation stopping her speech. He kissed and licked his way up to her ear and whispered, “Yes, princess?”
Liz shivered. The husky sound of his voice made her stomach jump and her heart clench. Her brain began to fog over and she forgot her intention to tell Max about her origins. Instead, she moaned, pressing her body against his. *I need him. Now.* Liz’s body was screaming its need to have him inside her. She leaned forward and brushed her lips across his, hard and fast, before dropping her head onto his shoulder. *But we shouldn’t...*
*Oh, what the hell!* Tunneling her fingers thru Max’s hair, Liz pulled his mouth back to hers. *It’s not like this isn’t going to happen soon anyway. And I need him so badly...* His lips closed over hers purposefully. Liz groaned as Max’s tongue once again pushed past her lips. She might very well die tonight....
Max’s hands slid underneath her shirt, caressing the small of her back, causing Liz to gasp into his mouth.
Smiling, Max continued to tease Liz’s heated flesh. Pulling away from her briefly, he pulled the red halter over her head. Throwing the shirt to the floor, he let his eyes roam her barely covered top half.
When he moved back toward her, Liz smiled her own smile and pulled his black shirt off in one fluid motion. Although she’d seen his well-defined torso before, Liz’s mouth almost watered when her eyes fell upon his toned chest. She ran her hands slowly over the muscles, delighting in the moans falling from Max’s lips. Stepping back into the circle of his arms, her lips met his desperately.
Then they were laying on Liz’s bed, legs entwined, hands exploring, bodies shifting closer to each other. Liz didn’t know how they’d gotten there and she didn’t really care. Nothing mattered as long he was with her.
Pulling gently away, Liz looked into Max’s glazed eyes across from her. “Max...” she moaned, her voice thick with need.
Max searched her eyes. “Liz, we shouldn’t.” He closed his eyes for a moment, obviously trying to regain his reason and some of his control. “It’s too soon and we don’t know-”
Liz kissed him, forcing him to stop. When she pulled away, she stared into his eyes and murmured, “I don’t care. I need you NOW.”
Max’s lips met Liz’s in an explosive kiss as his control snapped and he rolled her underneath him. Pulling away slightly, he asked the two questions she knew were coming. “Are you afraid? Are you sure?”
Liz smiled. “I’m not scared. Why should I be? It’s you. And I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.”
His lips met hers again and the world faded to nothing but that moment and the two of them.

Part 14: The Other
Tess peeked into Liz’s room from the balcony, her jaw tightening when she saw a very naked Liz and Max wrapped around each other, asleep. The sight disgusted her to no end.
*Why would he want a girl like Aura when he could have a girl like me?* Tess asked herself bitterly.
“Maybe because Aura’s love is, and always has been, true.”
Tess jerked toward the annoyingly familiar voice. Sitting on the edge of the balcony by the ladder was Nicola Garner, the third protector, an evil smile on her face.
“YOU!” Tess cried, and immediately regretted it. She looked over her shoulder to make sure the dreamers were still sleeping. Letting out a breath when she found them still dreaming (*Probably exhausted* she thought coldly), she turned back toward Nicola.
“What’s wrong, Ava?” Nicola asked. “Afraid of what the king and queen might do if they find you spying on them again?”
Tess chuckled dangerously. “I’m a little afraid of Aura, but that’s about it.”
Nicola stood up and put her glowing hand out, pointing it at Tess’s chest. “Well, you should be afraid of ME at the moment,” she replied cockily. Then, leaning close, she whispered, “Now, get lost.”
Tess was down the ladder in record time for the second time in one day.
With one last look at her brother and her future sister-in-law, Nicola closed her eyes and disappeared, once again leaving Max and Liz alone.

Part 15: The Deception
Angel sat on Liz’s balcony, her back against the railing and a romance novel in her hand. She’d been reading since Max and Liz had left, about an hour before. She was beginning to get a crick in her neck. Marking her place, she rolled her head, scowling.
*Stupid powers* Angel thought. *Can’t even heal my aching neck.*
Groaning, she turned toward the window, fully intending to get something to drink.
“Angel!”
Angel turned around to see Nicola coming up the ladder. “Nickie! Thank goodness. I didn’t know when you’d be here.” She gave her a hug, then asked. “What’s wrong?”
“Ava’s at it again,” Nicola replied, vaulting the ledge. “She’s going to try to make everyone believe she killed Alex.”
Angel snorted. “How’s she gonna manage that?” She pointed toward Alex’s house. “He’s at home, paired up with Kyle.”
Nicola shook her head. “No, he’s not.”
Angel just looked at her, waiting for the explanation.
“His dad sent off to Military school.” Nicola sighed. “No one knows, except me, you, Tess, and Alex and his parents know where he’s at.”
“I should tell the group,” Angel said thoughtfully. “That way-”
“No, don’t.” Nicola stood up and began to pace. “Not yet. Alex will call them soon.”
Angel nodded in understanding. If Tess knew that they all knew she hadn’t done anything to Alex, she might go after one or more of the others, namely Max and Liz. And that wasn’t safe for anyone. “Okay. I’ll only tell them if Tess really starts in.”
“Well, I’ve gotta go.” Nicola headed for the ladder. “I have someone I have to meet. But,” she added before she began her decent to the ground, “don’t hesitate to page me if you need something. Okay?”
Angel nodded again. A moment later, she was once again alone.
