Chapter 1 - The Entertainer

“...Happy birthday dear Liz, happy birthday to you.” A crowd of people sang.

“Oh my God! Maria, did you set this up yourself?” Liz asked as the song ended.

“Of course chica. It’s your twenty-first birthday. You knew I had to do something special!”

“Excuse me? Did I just hear you say you set this up all by yourself?” An amused Michael questioned.

“Okay, okay,” Maria admitted. “My wonderful boyfriend helped just a little bit.”

“Ahem?” Michael corrected.

“Okay, damn, give me a break! Michael is the one who called everyone, set up the decorations, ordered the cake, picked up the cake, and he is the one who cooked dinner. Happy now?”

“Much.” He replied as he kissed her on her forehead.

“Well, if he did all of that, then what did you do?” Liz asked.

“I ordered him around. That’s what I do best!”

“Tell me about it,” Michael said under his breath.

“I heard that!” Maria yelled as she hit him on the arm. “But there is one thing that Michael didn’t do. I get credit for the entertainment.”

“Oh, Maria...please tell me you didn’t.” Just as Liz spoke those words, loud music came on followed by some hollering.

“She did,” Michael answered for her.

A guy walked on stage and began dancing to the music, but before any item of clothing was peeled off of his body, Liz grabbed him and pulled him out of the room.

“Hey, what was that all about?” The guy asked confused.

“I’m Liz Parker, and my friend ordered you...uh, requested your services for tonight.” Liz corrected herself.

“Hi, I’m Max Evans. Was something wrong? I mean, why did you pull me out of there?” Max asked confused.

“Well you see, this isn’t really my thing. You don’t really interest me.”

“Oh, I see. Boy is my friend going to laugh when he hears this. This was my first time doing this, and I don’t think I’m cut out for it. I apologize. If you like, I can have someone else sent down here. I mean, it is already paid for.” Max offered.

“No, no, no. I mean the stripping doesn’t interest me. You do. Shit! I mean, I don’t know you. I don’t know what I mean. I’m so sorry.” Liz said embarrassed.

“Well, can I interest you in a cup of coffee? Or maybe just a simple walk around the park. We’ll both have our clothes on, and it will give us a chance to get to know each other.”

Liz stood there not knowing what to say. Was this guy actually flirting with her? That hasn’t happened in so long that she almost forgot about the great feeling that came along with it.

“I’ll take that as a no,” Max said judging by how quiet she got.

“No!” Liz yelled a little too loud. “I don’t mean no as in I won’t go. I meant no as in what you thought. I would love to talk a walk with you.”

“Great! Would you like to let your friends know that you‘re leaving?”

“No, let’s just go ahead and go. I’m sure they won’t mind.” Liz said with a smile.

He offered her his hand, and she didn’t hesitate to take it in hers. Their hands interlocked perfectly, and she couldn’t help but feel like they were supposed to meet each other. They walked down the stairs together, and Max suddenly let go of her hand. Liz looked up confused until she realized that he was holding the door open for her.

“Thank-you, Max.” Liz said as she walked through the open door.

“You’re welcome,” He replied as he took her hand back into his.

The two walked together in silence for awhile, before stopping by a tree near the park.

“Why did we stop?” Max questioned.

“When I was a little girl I would sit by this tree for hours and make a wish on every star that I could find.” Liz said as she touched the tree, remembering what happened years ago.

“And what did you wish for?”

Liz shook her head trying to forget the event.

“It’s dumb really.”

“Liz, a wish comes from the heart. Therefore it can’t be dumb. Come on, what wish did you make on every star that you could find?” Max said trying to encourage her.

“I wished that I could see my parents just one last time. They were quickly taken from me, and I wished that once...just once...I could see them again. I begged my parents to take me to Maria’s house. I was seven years old, and she was my best friend. Even back then. Anyways, her mom moved a week before, and I missed her. My parents kept telling me that I could see her the next day. Then when that day finally came, something would always come up. I grew tired of it, and I threatened to run away if they didn’t take me to see her. I was such a brat. They agreed to take me, and on the way there, a drunk driver collided into our vehicle. My parents, as well as the drunk driver, died. I was the only survivor. I was the reason that my parents were taken from me, and I would sit here and wish that my parents never agreed to take me. They would still be here if it wasn’t for me.” Liz broke down into tears, and Max hugged her tightly.

“Liz, I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason. Have you ever stopped to think that maybe it was their time to go? Maybe you didn’t die in that same crash because you were meant to live. You were meant to do something great with your life. Don’t beat yourself up for that accident. Otherwise you’ll never live your life. You’ll sit here until guilt consumes you, and then what? What good will that do?”

Liz wiped off her tears, and looked into Max’s eyes. She could tell that he meant what he said, and a smile formed on her lips.

“Why are you smiling?” Max inquired.

“Because I just realized something. I never told any of this to my friends whom I’ve known for years. I just met you half-an-hour ago, and I just told you all of that. And you, who doesn’t even know me, gave me the best advice that I can think of. Thank-you, Max.”

“Hey, no problem.” Max said as he looked deep into her eyes. He was falling for her, and he was falling hard. “So, Liz, tell me a little bit about yourself.”

“Well, as you know I am twenty-one years old, and I am an elementary school teacher here in town. And, to tell you the truth, this feels kind of weird because I don’t usually talk to many guys. I was hurt once and so I began to stay away. How about you, Max? Tell me a little bit about yourself.”

“Well, I am twenty-two years old, and I am a schoolteacher here as well. Actually, I teach English up at West Roswell High School. I also had my first job in the entertainment business. Yeah, I covered a friend’s ass today but I just quit an hour ago. It just didn’t work out. And, I have a favor to ask of you.”

“What’s that?” Liz asked.

“Well, there’s this girl named Whitney, and I really like her. It’s just, I’ve never been out on an actual date before because I’ve never found the right girl, and I was wondering if you could help me out. You know, you‘re a girl so you can tell me how to approach things.”

“Oh, yeah sure. It would be my pleasure.” Liz offered a little hurt.

“Liz, I’m joking. The truth is I like you...and I was wondering if you’d go out with me tomorrow night.”

Liz hit Max on the arm. “You ass!”

“What?” Max asked as he rubbed the area that Liz just hit.

“I like Whitney, I’ve never been out on a date before, and I was wondering if you could help.” Liz mocked.

“Hey, it wasn’t a complete lie! The part about not having an actual date yet is true!” Max defended.

“Are you serious? And how is that possible?”

“Well, there have been offers, but I’ve turned them all down. Like I said before, I haven’t found a girl worth dating. Until now, that is.”

Liz blushed at the words Max spoke.

“I’d love to go out with you tomorrow evening.”

“Great, what time should I pick you up?”

“Seven,” Liz answered.

“Seven it is. Good night, Liz.”

“Good night, Max.” Liz replied before they went their separate ways.

I HAVE CHAPTER TWO READY TO GO, BUT I WANT TO SEE HOW THIS CHAPTER DOES FIRST. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I SHOULD CONTINUE OR NOT. AND PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION AS WELL, BECAUSE IT CAN GO EITHER WAY. SHOULD I USE ALIENS IN THIS STORY, OR SHOULD IT STAY HUMANS ONLY? YOU DECIDE.

Jessica,

I do have a few things up my sleeve. They met so soon for a reason that will be revealed later. it didn't just happen. And the same thing with why she told him everything. That will be explained later in the story. I don't just tell everything at once, but things do happen for a reason.

Jessica,

I didn't take it the wrong way. Lol' I just thought that I would clarify what I was doing. So no one would be confused. I can go either way, because I know what I would use in both situations, so I'm leavin the alien/human choice up to the readers.

Chapter 2
“Girl, where the hell have you been?” Maria yelled as Liz walked through the front door.

“I went out. Calm down Maria.”

“Calm down?” Maria turned to Michael. “Did you hear that? She wants me to calm down! This was her party, and she just left it! Not to mention the mess we got to clean!”

“Maria, she’s right. Calm down.” Michael said as he left the room.

“Okay, spill. Who, what, where, and why? I already know the when.”

“Max Evans, a walk, the park, and because I felt like it.” Liz answered the way Maria asked.

“Max Evans? The entertainer? What in the world were you thinking?”

“He’s not an entertainer. He was just covering his friends’ ass tonight. He is a teacher at West Roswell High. And what was I thinking? I was thinking that it was about time to get out again! You know I have a hard time speaking to guys. And for heavens sake! I haven’t been out on a date for 3 years!”

Liz began walking to her bedroom when Maria shot out one more question.

“Oh, so is that what this was? A date?”

“No, this was not a date.”

“Good,” Maria replied.

“The date is set for tomorrow evening. Good night, Maria!” Liz yelled as she shut her bedroom door. She knew her best friend was about to barge into her room, but she didn’t care. She was having fun playing this game with Maria.

“Wait, hold the press!” Maria said as she walked into Liz’s room. “You guys are going out on a date tomorrow? A date as in you two, alone?”

“No, Maria! A date as in two girls and two guys all having sex together! Yes, a date where the two of us are alone!”

“Hey, don’t knock it till you try it,” Maria shot out knowing that it would shock her best friend, and it did.

“Maria DeLuca! You can’t be serious!”

“Of course I’m not. Anyways, back to the subject of Max. What do you really know about him?”

“Well, he’s twenty-two, he teaches English at West Roswell High, and he’s never had a real date before.”

“Bull shit,” Maria coughed out.

“What? Now what’s your problem?”

“Come on Liz! You can’t possibly believe that’s true!”

“And why not?” Liz spat back. She loved Maria to death, but this interrogation crap was wearing thin.

“A twenty-two year old guy a virgin? I don’t think so. That’s not even humanly possible. They are little horn dogs and you know it!”

“Not all of them are like that Maria. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to get some rest. I have a big day tomorrow.”

“Fine. We’ll discuss this some other time. Good night.” Maria finished saying as Liz shut her bedroom door and locked it.

************

“Isabel, I’m home!”

“Look, Max. I’m your sister, not your dog. You don’t have to call out like that every time you step through that door.”

“In a bad mood today?” Max asked.

“Just don’t even ask. Please. Now how was your day?”

“Great! I have a date tomorrow!”

Isabel hasn’t seen her brother with a girl since...well...since forever. This bit of news came as a shock to her.

“With whom?”

“Elizabeth Parker.”

“Elementary school teacher, Liz Parker?” Isabel questioned.

“Yeah, that’s her. Do you know her?”

“Yeah, yeah I do. Look Max, you can’t go out with her. Cancel the date.”

“Why?”

“Look, just do it okay? She was hurt a few years ago and she is carrying a few secrets on her. And don’t forget you are carrying them as well.”

“And your point is? Everyone has secrets.”

“And a relationship built on secrets will not end nicely. Especially yours.”

“What are you talking about Isabel?”

“You’ve never been out on a date before.”

“Yeah, and she knows that.”

“And did you tell her why?”

Max looked down to the ground, and then back up to his sister.

“I told her I haven’t found the right girl yet.”

“So you’re already starting out with a lie? Good going Max!”

“What do you want me to say Isabel? The truth? I wish you didn’t even know about it. What happened when I was eighteen was stupid okay? I didn’t know anything back then! And trust me. There isn’t a night when those memories don’t come back to haunt me. Mom and Dad disowned me, and I had to move because the whole neighborhood didn’t trust me anymore. They looked at me as if I were an alien.”

“That’s because they trusted you, and you stabbed them in the back. Each one of them you hurt, Max. Not just one. They looked at you as if you were an alien because they realized they didn’t know you. They knew an act.”

“You know what Isabel? Thank you for your help. I always thought you forgave me for what had happened, but now I see that you were just waiting for the right moment to tell me what you just did.” Max yelled out as he walked towards the back of the house.

“I did forgive you, Max! It’s just that I don’t want to see you hurt Liz. She’s a good person.” Isabel explained before Max slammed the door shut.
***********

Liz was just starting to fall asleep when the telephone rang.

“Hello?” She whispered quietly into the phone.

“Liz?”

“Yeah, this is she.”

“Hi, it’s Max.”

“Oh, hi Max! How did you get my number?”

“The agency had it from earlier today.”

“Oh yeah, okay. What’s going on? Is something wrong?”

“Yeah, there is. Listen Liz; I can’t go out with you tomorrow night.”

“Why? Did something come up? We can always reschedule it for another night if you like.”

“No, I don’t think that will be a good idea. Let’s just forget today happened okay?”

***********

Max hoped that she wouldn’t be upset, but that thought went down the drain as he was met by a click on the other line.

***********

Liz slammed the phone down on the receiver and walked over to the bathroom. She turned on the faucet and splashed some cool water on her face. ‘I better not see Max until I calm down, or the outcome won’t be so good’ Liz thought to herself before she went back to bed.

ICE, I LOVE YA GURL! THANKS FOR THE FB PPL. AND REMEMBER, ALL OF THIS HAPPENS FOR A REASON THAT WILL BE EXPLAINED LATER. I'M NOT JUST GONNA GIVE YOU THE ANSWERS! LOL' THAT WOULD BE TOO NICE.

Hiya! A problem too big? Dee, you know me. I don't think relationships are just easy. You can bet that this problem will be huge, and it will be rocky. But as you also said, I am a 100% dreamer, so things will work out. Only after a bit of drama. I'm so mean, I know, but I have it all planned out*happy* Glad to hear from you again!

Chapter 3 - Liz screws up.

Morning quickly came and Liz threw back the covers on her bed. She slowly glanced at her clock which read 8:00 in bright red numbers.

“Shit!” Liz yelled as she jumped out of bed. School starts at nine in the morning, and being a teacher she’s supposed to be there an hour early. She ran to her closet and grabbed the first thing that her hand came into contact with. She threw it on and ran out the door. She arrived at school 10 minutes later and ran to her classroom. She was shocked to see that she had a visitor at this time in the morning. ‘Today’s Friday,’ she thought to herself. ‘I don’t have a parent teacher conference....’

“Excuse me, may I help you?” Liz asked the man before she realized who it was. “What do you want Mr. Evans?” Liz asked with no emotion whatsoever.

“Can we talk?”

“I guess I have a few minutes I can spare. Come on, we can talk in the classroom.” She answered as she unlocked her door. They both stepped inside and she walked straight to her desk.

“You have five minutes so say what you can in that amount of time.”

“Liz, would you please not act like this.”

“Like what?” She inquired.

“Like a child.”

“Look, Mr. Evans, if you’ve just come to insult me then you can save it and leave. Besides, shouldn’t you be teaching a class right about now?”

“I’m not here to insult you, and I called in sick. This was more important.”

“This is more important?” Liz laughed out. “Why the hell would this be more important? Let me tell you something, I don’t want to see you again after this. I want to forget about yesterday. I want to forget about you. Is this registering in that little head of yours? I thought you were different from every other guy I met, but it turned out you were just like them. But you know what? I’ve never hated any of them until now. Am I being a little harsh? Maybe, but I don’t care. Am I going overboard with this? Hell no. I’ve been in a vulnerable state of mind for awhile, and maybe that’s why I fell for you so quickly. But you know what? It also left me open to get hurt more easily as well. Now if you don’t mind Mr. Evans, I have to get ready for my class.”

“Liz-” Max began before he was cut off mid-sentence.

“I thought I told you that I have to get ready for a class. Leave.”

“But I-”

“Leave! If you do not leave then I will have a restraining order put against you. Now go.”

"No, I will not leave Liz." Max stated with conviction in his voice. "I came here for you to listen to me and that is exactly what I'm going to do."

“My students will be arriving soon. I don’t have time to listen.”

Max glanced at the clock before speaking again. “Nice try, Liz. It’s 8:20 in the morning, and school doesn’t start for another forty minutes. You can’t fool a teacher. I started out teaching elementary school. I know for a fact that the younger kids would rather play on the playground until the first bell rings then arrive to class early.”

Liz felt trapped, and she didn’t like that. “I hate you.” Liz spat out. She didn’t know why she was saying all of this, but she was.

“Yeah, a lot of people seem to agree with you.”

“What do you mean?” Liz asked. Max grabbed her attention with that one sentence, and now she wanted to know just what was going on with him.

“What do I mean? I mean that there are a lot of people that hate me. It was never my choice to move out of Roswell. That decision was practically made for me. There are times when I think that my own sister Isabel hates me.”

“Wait, Isabel is your sister?”

“Yeah, she is. How do you two know each other if I may ask?”

“We both met at the police station last year, and we’ve been friends ever since.”

“What was she doing there?” Max questioned.

“Look, I’m not the type that goes out and tells everyone else’s business. You’ll have to ask her that yourself. Now why do a lot of people hate you? What made you move from Roswell?”

“I’d rather not talk about it.”

“No, I’m sorry Max, but you don’t get that choice. You brought it up. You’re the one that wanted to talk aren’t you? Now talk.”

“W-when I was an elementary school teacher; this parent walked into my classroom and demanded that they take their child home. I told him that it was school policy to get a note from the office before I could let a child go. He looked like he had been drinking or something, very unstable. He went to grab the child, and this little girl...his little girl...begged me not to let him take her. She told me that he would do things to her at night; she told me that he would hit her as well. I grabbed his arm and began escorting him to the door when he pulled this knife out of nowhere. The kids screamed and pushed themselves up near the blackboard. He tried to stab me, and I defended myself. Somehow we ended up on the floor, and his movement stopped. I looked to see what had happened and it turned out that he fell on his own knife. He died. Now these kids that I had in my class...most of them were kids in my neighborhood. I was taken to court, but luckily they sided with me. However, everyone that knew me turned on me. They said that I should have let the little girl go with her father. That it was none of my business. Then I found myself sitting in an empty classroom. No one wanted his or her child near me. They all said that their children were scared of me now. Soon they started doing things to my house. They started spray painting my walls, throwing trash on the lawn, my dog was even killed but the police said they couldn’t find any proof that my neighbors did it. I think they were in on it as well. Soon my parents disowned me because I was a disgrace to the family. They said I brought shame upon them and that they wanted me out. That way they may hopefully find peace with the neighbors. That’s when I moved here and I switched to teaching High School kids.”

By now Max had tears in his eyes, but he refused to let them fall.

Liz had no idea just what Max went through. She felt bad now for making him tell her what was going on. “Max, I’m so sorry. I had no idea.”

“Don’t apologize. That’s what you wanted to hear isn’t it? It must have been. You saw how much I didn’t want to tell you what was going on. Couldn’t you tell that it wasn’t something good? Something I wasn’t proud of? And now what? You’re going to feel sorry for me? Offer me a shoulder to cry on? I keep things to myself because I don’t like pity. I would have preferred to work out our problems in a different way. Because now I don’t know if you actually want to be my friend, or if you want to be my friend because you feel sorry for me.” Max began to walk toward the door when Liz spoke up.

“Max, stop. Where are you going?”

“I’m going home. Have a nice class.” With that, Max walked out of the classroom.

************

“Maria! Where the hell are you? We need to talk!” Liz yelled out as she got home.

“I’m right here. What’s wrong?”

Liz looked at Maria’s attire and couldn’t help but laugh. Maria was wrapped in a towel that looked like it was about to fall off, she had shampoo in her hair, and shaving creme on her legs.

“You hold in those chuckles Miss Parker before I give you a reason to laugh. I was in the middle of a shower when you burst in here screaming. Now what’s going on?”

“Umm...why don’t you finish and I’ll talk to you then?”

“Why thank you. Aren’t you just so generous? Letting me finish my shower and all. I think you deserve a medal for your generosity.”

“I do though, don’t I?”

That was all it took before Maria lost it. She ran her hand through her shampoo covered hair and smeared it on Liz’s face. “Listen babe, now that is a Kodak moment.”

“Maria DeLuca!” Liz yelled out.

“Okay, the more we sit here and talk, the longer it’s going to take me to finish. I’ll see you in about five minutes, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah.” Liz replied as she wiped the shampoo off of her face.

*************

Max was sitting on the couch when Isabel came home.

“We need to talk.”

“Okay? What about?” Isabel asked curiously.

“Well, I talked to Liz today. Yeah, she told me how you two met. What happened that you had to go to a police station a year ago?”

Isabel got a panicked look in her eyes. This was definitely something that she did not want her brother knowing about. “It was nothing, really. I just had to fill out a report.”

“A report about what?”

“It was nothing, Max.”

“Isabel, don’t play these games with me! I saw that look in your eyes. What happened?” Max asked with anger in his voice.

“Last year...I filled out a police report. I...I had these two men arrested. They-they tried to rape me, Max.”

Ria!

Hey, I'm glad to see that you read this. Thank you for your feed back. I am glad you liked it. See, I was trying to take a different path then I did with all of my other fics. I mean, in Chances, things are usually all happy. Same with Who Ever Said It Was Easy. They are always more comical. Here I wanted to get out some problems that are in every day life. I mean, our society is only getting worse, and there are many things that can happen. I want to try and fit some of those in this fic. I want to have some serious issues as well as some funny ones. Trust me. These characters are going to go through a lot. Lol

Abby,

Gurl, you crack me up. U did like four bumps in a row. Aren't you stealing my moves? Cheater. Lol. You know I love you.

Everyone, part four should be out by Friday night. I am going to try and update twice a week now. Abby, hun, you need to do the same or you'll loose your job!

Okay,

I know that there should be a new part right here, right now, but I don't think I am going to make it. I have someone I am worried about, and I haven't heard from that person like I was supposed to, so my mind is elsewhere. And I believe that if I were to have written today with that on my mind, then whatever I was able to get out on paper wouldnt make much sense. I will, however, have a new chapter out before Sunday evening. That is something I know will be done. I apologize.

Okay,

I've been working my behind off on this new part because I just couldn't decide how I wanted Max to react, and how I wanted the conversation between Liz and Max to go. Let's just say that there were times when I wanted to throw a chair or something at the computer. Luckily, I didn't and I was able to continue writing. Lol' Anyways, I am just about done with the next part, but it seems my dear old sweet sister Abby has run off yet again. So what's that have to do with anything? Well, she's my little beta, and I am quite stuck without her. So Ria, where are ya hun? I may need to steal ya away. Okay? I expect this chapter to be out manana at the latest.

Title: Secrets.(Used to be called A First Love, but that just didn't go well with what I have planned.)
Author: Sarah A.K.A Wearydreams2003
E-Mail: Shera8285⊕netscape.net
Category: M/L of course! But the rest of the cast is in it as well.
Rating: All of the above. Don't worry, I will label when it gets past R.
Summary: I'll give you a little one. Max and Liz meet at a party, and they fall for each other. Things progress quite nicely, and Liz thinks she's the luckiest person in the world. But can a secret tear the two apart? Or will they be able to work everything out? This is a story of love, pain, suspense, comedy, and much more. I try to add everything in there so it has something for everyone. This story came about because ABBY and JESSIE pressured me to write another one. I hope you like it.

~THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS GIVEN THIS STORY A CHANCE. YOU GUYS ARE GREAT. AND ALSO THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE CONGRATS I GOT FOR MAKING ADMIN. I LOVE YOU GUYS.~

Chapter 4 - Can We Talk?

Max looked at his sister in disbelief. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Had two men really attempted to rape his sister? And if so, why didn’t she tell him the day it had happened? A part of him was furious at her for keeping such a thing from him, and yet another part of him understood her motives as well. This wasn’t something that people could just openly talk about. Max had two options to choose from; choose to yell at his sister, and possibly have her shun him for it, or he could just be there for her when she decided it was time to talk. He decided to go with choice number two. After all, Isabel went through a lot with what had happened back in Roswell. After she decided to go with Max so he wouldn’t be alone, their parents decided to drop all connections with her as well. It was the least he could do for her.

“Isabel, just know that I am here for you when you want to talk about what happened.” Max said calmly.

“You mean you aren’t going to yell, or give me a lecture about how I should have told you the minute it had happened? Who are you and what did you do with my brother?” Isabel tried to joke.

“No, I’m not going to do any of that. I realize that what happened to you wasn’t something that you want to jump up and tell the world about. But I do want you to understand that I am here for you when you want to talk. I want you to feel like you can come to me with anything.”

“Thank you, Max. I think I’ll take you up on that offer someday.” Isabel walked to the door with her purse in hand. “I have to go to work now, but I’ll be home later tonight. Oh, and Max? Just so you know, I wasn’t alone when it happened.”

“What do you mean?” Max questioned.

“I’m talking about meeting Liz down at the police station. She was there for me when I needed her the most. It turns out the same thing happened to her about two and a half years ago. Only she wasn‘t as lucky as I was. There was no one there to save her from her attackers. Max, she’s a really good person, and I’m sorry about what I told you the other day. It’s just, after knowing what she went through, I knew that it was easy for her to get hurt. I’ll talk to you later.” With that said, Isabel left.

*************

As Liz was sitting on the couch waiting for Maria to finish her shower, an idea popped into mind. She picked up the phone and called West Roswell High School.

“Hello, West Roswell High School, how may I help you?”

“You have an employee by the name of Max Evans, and I need to find out where he lives.”

“I’m sorry miss, but we aren’t allowed to give out that information.”

“I’m Liz Parker, and I am a teacher at the elementary school here in town. I have his niece here with me, and it turns out he forgot to pick her up. I guess he wasn’t feeling too well today, so I figured I could drop her off at home.”

“Oh, that’s very nice of you Miss Parker. One moment please and I’ll pull up his file.”

“Thank you,” Liz replied.

“Okay...Max Evans...yes, here it is. He lives in the Maple apartments on hillside. Look for apartment number 101. And please tell him that we wish him well.”

“I will do that, bye.” Liz said as she hung up the phone. She ran and grabbed her keys and was half way out the door when she heard her best friends’ voice.

“Liz, I thought you wanted to talk.”

“Oh, forget about it. I already decided what I need to do. See you later Maria!”

Liz ran to her car and jumped in. She didn’t know why she was in such a rush, but she figured she had to clear things up as soon as possible. Max came to her trying to apologize, and all she could do was give him an attitude and force him to bring up a past that he was trying to forget. She finally reached the apartment complex, and was pleased to see that number 101 was right in front. For once in her life she didn’t have to do something the hard way. She walked up to the door and gave it a light knock. Max opened the door and was surprised to see Liz standing there.

“Can we talk?” Liz asked.

“Yeah, sure. Come on in.” Max offered. Max closed the door after Liz walked in. “You can take a seat on the couch.”

“Thank you,” Liz replied as she did.

Max joined her on the couch, and they both sat in silence.

“Look, Max, I wanted to apologize for how I acted earlier. You came to me wanting to apologize, and I didn’t give you a chance to speak. Then I pretty much forced you into telling me something that you weren’t quite ready to talk about yet. When you left I broke down into tears. I don’t know, I guess I felt that you would always be there when I was ready to deal with things again. Then you walked out of the classroom, and it felt like a final good-bye, and I didn’t like that feeling.”

“Look, Liz, I appreciate you coming to apologize for what happened back in the classroom, but I’m not sure about a friendship. I had explained all of that earlier today.”

“Okay, I understand.” Liz stood up and walked to the door ready to leave. She slowly opened it and was about to walk out, when she turned around and slammed it shut.

“No.”

“No what?” Max questioned.

“No, it’s not that easy. Look, I just wanted to let you know that I do want to be your friend, Max, and don’t think for one second that it’s because I pity you. I know all too well about pity, and it’s not something I like to pass on myself.”

Max looked into her eyes and saw that she was sincere. However, he saw this as an opportunity to get what he wanted.

“I’ll tell you what; we can make it even.”

“I’m not sure I understand what you’re talking about.”

“Last year, why were you at the police station?”

“I was hurt...I guess you could say I was beaten up in an ally. I had to file a report along with Isabel.”

“But why would you have to file it with her? I mean, she was almost raped. Those are two different cases.”

“See, that’s where you’re wrong. They weren’t two different cases because the same men that tried to rape her, were the ones that beat on me. I was walking when I heard a girl scream. I ran to see what was going on, and I caught the men red handed. I obviously pissed them off by interrupting them, and they came after me. They pushed me against the wall and started punching me. We heard police sirens and the two men took off running. I guess someone saw what was going on and they called the cops.”

“How bad were you hurt?” Max couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Not only did these two men hurt Isabel, but Liz as well?

“I had a broken wrist, and bruises all over my face. I guess you could say I was lucky. Things could have been much worse. That’s the way that I look at it.”

“I’m not sure if this is an appropriate thing to say, but thank you.”

“For what?” Liz asked confused.

“If you hadn’t interrupted what they were doing then they would have raped my sister, and who knows what else they would have done. I also want to thank you for being there for her when I couldn’t be.”

“Max, there’s nothing to thank me for. I know what it’s like to be in her position, and it isn’t pretty.” Liz looked down ashamed of what she just said. She didn’t want anyone to think badly of her because two complete strangers ripped her virginity away from her. She hasn’t even told Maria, her best friend, about what had happened to her.

“No.” Max spoke out as if he could read her mind.

“No what? I don’t understand.”

“Don’t be ashamed of what had happened. There was nothing that you could have done to prevent it. There are some sick and twisted people out there, and once in awhile we will cross paths with them. But that doesn’t mean that you have to dwell on it. Otherwise you’re just letting them win.”

“I guess we all have our little secrets, don’t we?”

“Yeah, I guess so.” Max agreed out loud, but in his mind he was thinking ‘you have no idea.’

“Max, I was wondering if you’d like to go out to dinner tomorrow night. It will give us a chance to get to know each other, and perhaps we can go from there.”

“Well, I do owe you a date don’t I? How about I pick you up at seven sharp?”

“That sounds fine. I’ll see you tomorrow, Max.” Liz said as she walked to the door.

“Yeah, see you tomorrow.”

“Oh, and Max?”

“Yeah?”

“If the subject comes up at work, then tell them your niece if fine.”

“What? Since when do I have a niece?”

“How else do you think I found out where to find you? I needed some excuse to get a hold of that information, so I told a little lie. So sue me.” Liz replied as she walked out of the door.

******************************

Okay, I was so not sure about how this chapter should be, and that is why it took me so long to do it. Currently, neither of my betas are online, so pardon me for the errors. Lol' The next chapter will be quite interesting, and I have it all planned out. Want a little idea of what's to come? Alright.

Max and Liz go out on their date, and something comes up. More like someone. Max gets completely drunk and reveals quite a few things to Liz which will once again cause a bit of a problem for the two.

I'll try to post it before this weekend, because I won't be on at all then. It's my b-day and I'll practically be gone the whole time. Anyways, this chapter is dedicated to RIA. Thank you girl!

Okay, another little heads up of what's to come. Someone asked if it will be Tess. Now, as much as I hate to say it, it will be her. She will be in this, though I am not sure for how long. I don't want her to be throughout the whole thing because she will only bring trouble with her. BIG trouble. Ya know, the usual lies, scams, and bringing up the past. Just please remember that nothing is what it seems at first. I will add a lot of twists, but some of them will not be true. You just don't know which ones. And Max will not be the only one to have someone from their past come and ruin things. Another one of my not so favorites (Sean) will be in this too. And ya won't like him either. I can promise that!

Now, I get to ask for a favor. Lol' Okay, more of a contest type thing.

I'd like to introduce a new character (Well, it wasn't a part of my original plan, but I love getting my readers involved with the fic other than just reading it.) Anyways, if you'd like to particiapte and possibly see your character in my fic, then b-mail me with this info.

Their name - (It can be yours or made up. Boy or girl. Doesn't matter.)

Their age - (Keep in mind Max and Liz are 21 - 22 so do you want them at that age? Older? Younger?)

What they do - (Where do they work, or are they a student?)

And how does this character meet them - (Does he/she first meet Max or Liz, and how?)

I will choose one idea to use for now, and there will be little things like this throughout my fic. Just so you guys can have a little fun *happy*

I've gotten a few great ideas so far! Thanks to those that have sent them in. If you still want to see your character in the fic, then just b-mail me. I'm still open to hear what you have to say!

I do plan on having the next chapter of my fic out by Friday! I do promise that Max and Liz will end up having some easy times. Lol' I am a 100% dreamer, so you know how it has to turn out. But I don' like making everything easy because there are always obsticles out there. I hope you guys will enjoy it.

I've just been more in admin mode than writer mode, and I've been doing a lot of clean up work and helping with ideas here and there. I am half way through this chapter and working even as I type. *Banging head on the table*

I've gotten myself into WAY too much, and I think I'm going to loose my mind. Literally. I so need to update this fic, but I am stuck at a part. Then I PROMISED I would restart Chances, and I am actually changing a little bit as I go, so that's 2 fics making my mind go all crazy. Then I have school coming up the 26th...my Senior year and I'm just all out of it. Then I've been all admin mode lately and ahh! Help. Someone. That's all I can say. ABBY, JESSIE, I am going to want to talk to you two. Okay? Please.

Yay for me!!!! I've gotten past the area that I was stuck with, and I am about one paragraph away from being completely done with the next chapter!!!! Then all I have to do is look over it, see if there's anything I want to change, and send it to my beta. I am SOOOOO sorry to all of you who have been waiting. I'm a pain...I know...but there were other things I had to take care of as well. I shall return soon with your update, and right after that I'll get started on the next one so I can be a bit quicker from now on.

Jessie,

I posted my other fic Chances for ya. I'll need to talk to you about some changes I want to do to see if you like them or what.

Chapter 5 - A Date In Hell

It was 6:58 to be exact and Liz was ecstatic. She began getting ready an hour before hand just to be on the safe side. She knew this was just a first date and nothing really important, but she couldn’t help but being excited. It had been so long since she’s been on a date, and she felt that it was about time to get back in the motion of things. To go out and have what these young people nowadays called fun. A knock on the door pulled Liz out of her thoughts.

“Hi,” Liz said with a smile as she opened the door.

“I told you seven on the dot, didn’t I?” Max asked with a smirk.

“Yeah, I guess you did. Just let me grab my purse and we can be on our way.”

*******************

“Hello?” An agitated voice answered the telephone.

“Well hi to you too.”

“What do you want now? Do you have any new information or are you just calling to annoy the hell out of me?”

“Well, as much as I love bugging the hell out of you, that’s not what this call is about. I just followed your ex, and as it turns out, he’s taking my ex out to dinner. What do you say we crash this little date of theirs?”

“I say what are we waiting for? Where should I meet you?”

“Just be ready to go in five minutes. I’ll pick you up outside your front door. Bye.” The voice replied before hanging up the phone.

******************

“Max, where are we?” Liz asked as she stepped out of the vehicle.

“This is Stephon’s. It’s a quaint little Italian place, but the food is amazing.”

Max and Liz walked into the restaurant and took a seat in the back. They began glancing over the menu when a lady threw herself onto Max.

“Excuse me, Miss?” Max said politely.

“Maxie! Don’t you remember me?”

“Oh, God.” Max looked at Liz apologetically. “Tess, what are you doing here?” Max whispered.

“You’ll see,” She replied with a smile attached to her face.

“Good-evening, may I get you something to drink?” The waiter asked as he approached the table.

“I’ll have a water, please.” Liz requested still not sure of who this lady was.

“I’ll have the same please.” Tess said in a sugary voice.

“Sir?” The waiter asked when Max said nothing.

“I’ll have alcohol. PLEASE! It doesn’t matter what kind, just get it here fast!”

“Liz!” A voice yelled from behind them.

Liz turned around and almost fainted. Standing there was Sean, her ex-boyfriend. Sean took a seat next to Tess and smiled.

“Sean, what are you doing here?” Liz asked a bit annoyed. This date was not going as planned.

“I’m here to get you back. I told you I wouldn’t give up.”

“And I told you we were through! What part of that don’t you understand? Besides, can’t you see I’m here on a date?”

“With Max over here? Don’t worry, it won’t last long.”

“What are you talking about?” Liz demanded.

“I met Tess awhile ago and she told me about her and Max. They were very close until she had to move away. I do believe that they are going to get back together. She was the love of his life.”

“Max, excuse me please, Sean and I are going to have a word outside.”

Max couldn’t speak at the moment so he just gave a nod of his head.

Liz grabbed Sean’s arm and practically dragged him out of the restaurant.

“What the hell do you want?”

“I told you I came here to get you back.” Sean replied.

“And I told you that would happen when hell freezes over. You cheated on me, and then you had the nerve to call me a slut after I was raped.” Liz spat out.

“I know, and I’m sorry for that. All of it. I don’t know what was wrong with me.”

“I’ll tell you what was wrong with you. You were a selfish arrogant asshole, that’s what you were. And you still are! How dare you come in and ruin my date with Max. Leave now. I don’t ever want to see you anywhere near me again. Do you hear that?”

“Baby, you know you still want me.” Sean said as he tried to grab onto Liz. Liz swung her fist back and brought it down across his jaw. Sean cried out in pain, and Liz began to walk away.

*****************

“What are you doing here Tess?”

“I want you back. I miss you.”

“And what if I don’t want you back? Did you ever think about that?”

“You don’t know what you want right now. You’re just confused.”

The waiter came back with a bottle of red wine, and Max poured himself a glass. No sooner was it in the glass did he pick it up and chug it. Max poured himself another glass and did the whole thing over again.

“Max, why don’t we give it another try?” Tess whispered as she placed her hand on Max’s.

Max pulled his hand away from hers and stared into her eyes. “I loved you. I loved you and you ran off with some guy. Now I finally find someone else I like, and you want to take that away? I don’t think so.”

Max was working on his fifth glass of wine, and Tess knew that he’d be drunk within a matter of minutes. And once he was, she knew it would be easier to get rid of Liz.

Liz came back to the table and took a seat. She glanced at Tess, and then at Max, and she could tell something wasn’t right.

“Hi, I’m Liz.” Liz introduced herself trying to be polite in this situation.

“I’m Tess. Max’s girlfriend.”

By the time Tess said this, Max was already done with the bottle of wine, and too drunk to understand what was going on. Liz looked at him for an objection, but all she got was a smile.

“I don’t get it. His girlfriend? Max told me that he’s never been on an actual date before.”

“He was just too upset to talk about it. Truth is he and I were going to get married one day, but I had to leave. Now I’m back to make things right between us. You understand that...don’t you Liz?”

“Umm...yeah,” Liz replied with tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m just going to go so you two can be alone.” Liz stood up and slowly walked out of the restaurant.

“Where is she goin’” Max hiccupped.

“She’s leaving. Now it’s just you and me baby.”

“I don tink so. I godda go get her.” Max stood up and ran after Liz. Before he made it out of the door, however, he fell flat on his face. He quickly jumped back up and pushed through the door.

As Tess was about to leave, the waiter came up to her and handed her the bill. “I presume you’ll be taking care of this Miss?”

Tess sighed. “I guess so.” And she snatched the thing from the waiters hand.

*****************

“Lizzz,” Max slurred as he finally caught up to her.

“Leave me alone.”

“No, we gotta talk.”

“What do you want to talk about, Max? The fact that you lied to me? You told me that you had never dated before, and I believed you. I believed you were the innocent boy-next-door type. Even Maria tried to tell me that it was impossible for a 22-year-old guy to never have gone out on a date before, but I believed you over her! And here comes this blonde chick telling me that you two were so in love, and that you were going to get married and this and that. Why couldn’t you have just told me the truth? I hate liars.”

“But I didn’ lie Liz. I had neber dated her. I jus had a crush on her. I eben thought dat I was in lub wit her. Bud I wasn’t. I was jus lookin for sumting to fill da empty space inside a me.”

“Max, you’re drunk. You don’t know what you’re saying.”

“Yes, I do. I may be drunk bud I can still tawk.”

“You’re not even making sense, Max. All drunks can talk. They just don’t know what they’re saying.”

“Nu-uh. I kno whad I’m saying. It’s all up here.” Max said pointing to his head. “I like you. A lot. And I don want you runnin awayz from me like you did before.” Max began swaying back and forth before falling to the ground.

Liz helped him back up, and led him to the car. “How about I take you home, and we’ll talk sometime later. Okay?”

“Yeah, dat sounds good. Nite, nite.” Max replied before passing out.

Chapter 6 - Murder?

“Ugh,” Max groaned as he tried to sit up.

“Here, take these.” Liz said as she handed Max some Tylenol with a glass of water.

“Thanks,” Max mumbled while taking the medicine.

“I’m going to go. Just take it slow today and you should be fine. Hangovers aren’t fun, and I’m sure you’ll have a headache most of the day.”

Max grabbed her wrist preventing her from going anywhere.

“Don’t go just yet. We need to talk.”

Liz sighed and rolled her eyes. She really didn’t have anything to say at the moment, and she really didn’t want to stay here any longer then she had to. She just wanted to make sure he was okay, and then leave. But no, men had to make everything so complicated.

“Max, I really should go. We’ll talk tomorrow or something. Besides, I think you need to go over everything that happened last night and decide what new stories you want to tell me. Because you obviously haven’t been truthful with me.”

“Why do you always run?”

“Excuse me?” Liz asked angrily.

“Why do you always run, Liz? Every time we’ve had an argument you’ve just left the situation. Why do you do that? Usually people like to work out their differences so they can move on.”

“I don’t run, I just walk away from conflicts.”

“Same difference,” Max argued.

“Yeah, and what’s it to you? What I do is my business and my business alone.”

“What’s it to me? I like you, Liz, and I was wanting a relationship with you. And I thought that’s what you wanted too. But lately it seems like you don’t even want a friendship with me.”

“Max, you lied to me. Now that’s something I despise. It’s not something that I forget.”

“No Liz, I didn’t lie to you. Tess did. I said that I’ve never been on an actual date. I never said I wasn’t in love.”

“As you just said awhile ago...same difference.”

“No, it’s not. I had a crush on a girl and I thought it was love. But it wasn’t. The whole thing she said about us wanting to get married? That was her lie. Not mine.”

“I didn’t hear you object to anything she said yesterday!”

“And I was drunk yesterday! Why does it seem like you’re always looking for something to hold against me? It’s like you’re looking for a reason to hate me.”

Liz didn’t say a word. Instead she looked down at her hands that, all of a sudden, seemed very interesting.

“It’s because you are, aren’t you? You’re looking for a reason to hate me. Why?”

“No I am not.”

“Yes you are!”

“Are you calling me a liar?”

“Yeah, I guess that’s exactly what I’m doing. I saw it in the way you acted. Now please tell me why you’re looking for a reason to hate me. Why you’re so intent on finding things to hold against me. And there’s no running from this discussion. I won’t allow it.”

“Sean, the guy that was at the restaurant as well, was my ex-boyfriend. I seriously thought that our relationship was headed somewhere. Then I found out that he was cheating on me with a mutual friend, and when I was raped he had the nerve to call me a slut. I don’t trust guys, Max. They’ve never brought anything but trouble for me. Including my abusive father. And you just happen to be a guy. That’s why I’m looking for a reason to hate you. I don’t want to end up trusting you only to find myself getting hurt in the process. I thought that maybe I was able to move past my issues, but I guess I’m not. There, now you know. May I leave now?” Liz asked impatiently.

“No.” Max replied.

“Why not? Wait! Why the hell am I asking you for permission? You don’t control me.”

Just as Liz was about to leave, Max once again grabbed her arm and quickly turned her around. Before Liz knew what was happening, Max crushed his lips down on hers. Once Liz realized what he was doing she fought in protest and slowly stepped away from him.

“Why did you do that?”

“Liz, there’s something that you have to understand here. I’m not Sean, I would never cheat on you or call you something as hurtful as that, and I am not your father. I would never in my entire life lay a hand on you. I understand that you don’t trust some guys, but you have to realize that not all of us are like that. Now I am truly sorry that you went through all of that, but I refuse to let you push me away because of it. I would really like things to work between us. I don’t know what’s going on, and I sure as hell can’t describe these feelings I have deep inside, but I like it and I don’t want it to go away. Ever. It’s like we were supposed to meet. I don’t know if you believe in fate, but I do. And I refuse to ignore it.”

“Fate? I don’t believe in fate, destiny, or anything like it. I don’t even believe in a God anymore! And do you know why? I refuse to believe in a God for the fact that I refuse to hate him. If I say I believe in God, then I’d have to say that I hate Him for everything that’s happened to me! My father was abusive and liked to beat on my mother and I like we were punching bags. Then both he and my mother were taken from me when I was young. Then I got into a relationship with a guy that liked to cheat on me and call me any name that he could think of. Then I was raped and my newest boyfriend called me a slut and left me because of it! So you tell me Max, what is my fate? Why did all of that happen to me? Go on...I want to hear you explain this one.”

“It’s simple, really. Maybe all of this happened so you would save my sister that one horrible day. Maybe you were raped so you could help someone else deal with it later on down the line. Maybe you went through so many bad relationships so you could finally see what it’s like when you find the right guy for you. And maybe, just maybe, you and I were supposed to meet. Maybe you and I are a part of a plan that someone has made out for us already. And maybe I’m supposed to be the one to get you back to living a normal and healthy life.”

“You really do have an answer for everything, don’t you?”

“Not everything. I just know that I refuse to let you go when I just found you. I feel this strong connection that I -” Max was cut off in mid-sentence when five men came through the front door carrying guns.

“Max Evans, you are under arrest for the murder of Walter Smith.”

Sarah...

(And I might leave off on another cliff-hanger, and I might not. But the real question to ask is who is Walter, did Max kill him, and will Liz stick by him since she already doesn't trust him?)

HEY EVERYONE! HERE IS THE NEW CHAPTER! I KNOW THAT I DIDN'T ANSWER MANY QUESTIONS, BUT THIS CHAPTER WASNT FOR THAT. I JUST WANTED A CHAPTER FILLED WITH THIER FEELINGS. WE GOT TO SEE WHAT MARIA REALLY THINKS OF MAX, AND JUST HOW CONFUSING THESE FEELINGS ARE BETWEEN MAX AND LIZ. AND I GUESS I DECIDED ON HAVING MAX BE AN ALIEN. THAT WASNT PLANNED, BUT IT JUST CAME TO ME WITH A BETTER IDEA. I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE IT.

Chapter 7 - Lawyer?

“Oh, this is great! I’m in the house of a murderer!”

“Liz, I swear there is some misunderstanding. I never killed anyone! I don’t even know a Walter Smith!” Max pleaded as the men placed handcuffs on him.

“Yeah, I think I heard enough from you, Max.”

“Liz, I swear to God that I would never kill anyone. Ever! Please, you have to believe me! I need you to believe me!” Max yelled to her as he was dragged out of the house by the police.

Liz fell to the ground as tears fell down her cheeks. What was she supposed to do? What was she supposed to believe? Max was right, she had been looking for a reason to hate him. She never trusted the male species, and when she finally met one she felt so close to, it scared her. And now here she is in his house not sure whether or not he took a man’s life. He sounded so scared, and looked so sincere when begging her to believe him. He wouldn’t lie to her, would he? Well, Liz Parker isn’t someone to just turn her back on people, and she wasn’t about to start now. She had to give him a chance to explain himself before she just shut the door in his face. It was, after all, the least she could do after playing her run and hide games with him. Liz picked up her purse and headed towards her car.

“I’m here to see Max Evans please,” Liz said as she walked through the doors of the city jail.

“I’m sorry miss, but he’s not allowed to have visitors at this moment.”

“Don’t give me that shit. His lawyer is not even present so you can’t really do crap until then, now can you? You’re pretty much just sitting on your ass watching Days of Our Lives loving the thought that you just booked some felon. Well let me tell you something,” Liz looked at the officers name tag, “Mr. Davidson, I’ll be the first one to laugh in your face when he is found not guilty. Now I’ll tell you one last time. I am here to speak with Mr. Evans.” Liz knew she was walking a thin line, but that’s how you had to be in situations like this. You can’t show how nervous you are or you won’t get what you want. And besides, not all of it was a bunch of talk. Maria was studying law, and Liz just happened to be her study buddy on more than one occasion. Oh, how she loved Maria now.

“Umm...right this way ma’am.” The officer said as he escorted her into a room.

A few minutes later Max walked into the room and took a seat on the other side of the plastic looking window. He was already dressed in some denim type outfit, and the handcuffs were still around his wrists. Liz picked up the phone to speak, and Max did the same.

“I wasn’t expecting to see you again.” Max said.

“Yeah, and I wasn’t planning on it either.”

“Then why are you here?” Max asked confused.

“I don’t know actually. I think it had to do with what you told me. The “I need you to believe me,” thing. You sounded so scared, and you looked sincere when you said it. I figured I had to do something. I didn’t want to ignore what you said only to find out that you weren’t guilty the entire time. I don’t think I could live with that. Knowing that I could have done something but didn’t. Changing subjects now, who is going to represent you in court?”

“I have no idea actually. I’m guessing they’re just going to hire the cheapest lawyer they can find. Isn’t that what they usually do? Hire someone for you? Someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing that way they loose the case?”

“Well I have an idea if you don’t mind a law student defending you.”

“And who is this law student?”

“Maria DeLuca. She’s been a friend of mine for quite sometime, Max, and I think you can trust her to try her hardest to win this for you. She likes to have fun, I’ll admit that, but she’s also very serious when it comes to her job.”

“If you trust her to do the job then so do I.”

Just then there was a knock on the door letting them know that they had another visitor. Maria stepped inside and motioned for Liz to follow her.

“Max, I’ll be right back. I need to clue Maria in with everything.” Liz said before stepping outside of the enclosed room.

“Did you get my message?”

“Yeah, but I still don’t know what’s going on. You told me you had a case for me if I was interested, but you didn’t tell me who I’d be defending. What’s going on?”

“Max is being accused of murder.”

“Max! There is no way in hell I’m defending Max! Liz, I told you from day one that he was no good. This only proves it!”

“Maria, listen to me! I can’t explain this, but I believe he didn’t do it. I know that he didn’t do it.” Liz corrected.

“No. No, Liz, I won’t do it! The only reason you believe him is because you have some twisted feelings about him.”

“I’ll admit it, I do like him. Even after everything that’s been going on and all of the confusion, I like him. There is this strange attraction and I can’t explain it. I can’t. But I have never been more sure of anything before this. I know that Max Evans is not guilty.”

Maria looked into her best friend’s pleading eyes and couldn’t say no. If she didn’t help her then she knew their friendship would forever be strained. Maria walked into the room that Max Evans was in, and Liz followed. Maria took a seat in the chair and picked up the phone.

“Max, I’m Maria, and before we even get started on this case there are a few things that you should know. I never wanted to help you, but Liz here is my best friend. She somehow sees you as a good person. Someone you can trust. Me? I basically see you as dirt and wouldn’t mind having you locked up for 50 years. Now I am doing this case for her, not you. I will win because I am dedicated like that, but after you’re out of here? I don’t ever want to see you again. And I swear if you hurt Liz in any way then I will personally see to it that another case is brought up against you. I do have my connections so don’t doubt me there. Another thing that we have to be clear about is that if anytime during this trial I see any clues or have any doubts about your innocence then I say screw it and I leave. Now I may sound like a bitch right now, but I don’t care because I am the only person that’s going to get you out of here anytime soon.” Maria stood up and walked out of the room.

Liz looked to a shocked Max and mouthed the words ‘be right back’ before running after her best friend.

“What the hell was that about?” Liz demanded.

“What are you talking about? I just let him know my priorities.”

“Maria, I know that you’re in miss attorney mode here, but please bend over and remove that stick that is wedged so far up your ass and leave it with the clerk up front. You don’t know him so you had no right to say any of that to him. He is already in a sticky situation without you having threaten him.”

“You didn’t see the pictures did you?”

“What pictures?”

“Pictures of the crime scene that Mr. Perfect supposedly left. Before you start pointing fingers at anyone for their behavior, I suggest that you take a look at the evidence. Go see what I did, Liz. Then you come back and tell me if you still feel the same way. I’ll be right here waiting. Go take a look.”

Liz slowly turned around and gave the guard her pass. She walked into the evidence room and nearly passed out. Pictures were scattered all over the desk, and Liz felt like she needed to throw up. She turned and quickly left the room. She headed back towards the room that Max was waiting in, and Maria stood to meet her.

“You stay out here!” Liz yelled before going to speak to Max.

“Liz, what’s wrong?”

“I’m going to ask you one more time, Max. Who the hell are you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I just saw pictures of the crime scene after the murder, and it wasn’t a lovely site. This guy was tied to a chair and his chest was cut open, Max! And you know what the sick bastard did after that? He removed his organs and laid them on a table next to him. I don’t even know how it’s possible. They were removed with...I don’t know what it was removed with because I can’t think of one damn cutting device that would make it such a clean cut.” Liz began crying now and she laid her head down on one arm and covered her head with the other one.

Max placed his hand on the area she was touching and received an image from her. He saw what she did. He felt what she felt. And most of all, he knew what she was thinking. She didn’t trust him.

“Liz,” Max choked out. “I don’t know if I can ever say anything to make you believe me, but I’m still standing with what I said before. I didn’t do it. I would never hurt anyone. I don’t care what other people think, but I really need you to believe me here. I need you by my side through this time. I need you as my friend.”

“Why me, Max? Why not Isabel?”

“I don’t know. I’ve got this feeling that refuses to be ignored. It’s telling me not to let you go, and it’s telling me to do everything in my power to make you stay here with me. I can’t explain it. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry because I have that same feeling too. It’s the one thing that keeps telling me you’re innocent even though I’ve seen all of the evidence to prove otherwise. Shit! Why did things have to be so damn complicated?!” Liz yelled as she punched the window in front of her. To her surprise it shattered into a million pieces leaving her hand and wrist very cut up. Great, Liz thought. It isn’t plastic, the idiots actually used glass. Then she passed out and fell forward.

Max grabbed her arm and noticed all of the blood coming from her wrist. He figured she cut a vein or something like it. He placed his hand over her wound and concentrated on healing her. In a matter of seconds, Liz woke up and she was healed.

“Wha-what happened? Why is it I don’t have a cut on my wrist?” Liz freaked out.

“I haven’t been totally honest with you, Liz.”

“What are you talking about?” Liz questioned cautiously.

Max placed his hand upon the broken glass and it too was soon repaired showing no signs of ever being broken.

“I’m an alien.”

"I'M LEAVING, ON A JET PLANE. I DON'T KNOW WHEN I'LL BE BACK AGAIN..."

Nah, I'm just playing you guys. I'm SOOOOOOOOO sorry for the delay. Someone shoot me know. Please?! I've just had no time to write at all and I hate that. Usually I like to write a chapter a week, and well....just look at how things have turned out. I have school, then home work, then Make a Wish Foundation, then we have to put in 10 hours of volunteer work for a political campaign in Government, then I have a bunch of little crap going on in between and I just want to scream! Oh, and add journalism to that list too. Ya know, I've requested that I be fired as the editor, but it just isn't working. He wont let me fire myself:( Think I can sue? I didn't think so either. He told me that no one could replace me, and I told him that one of the other 12 people could. It's my first yr so it can be theirs too. Damn. When I wanted this position I didn't realize that I'd be working with some people that didn't know what the hell they were doing. lol' So how have you all been? Better and less busy I hope. I swear I will find the time to send Abby my story and to finish the last page. Okay? I am also trying to add a bit of a twist to it. I am just hoping that it will work out.

Yikes,

I am terrible...I know. But look on the bright side, Abby has chapter 8 to edit, and I am already half way done with chapter 9!!!!! Yippee. So I will 100% for sure have a new part out by Wednesday. Abby, you only have until then to look at it!

And then I also want to know if I should even continue writing this or not. I mean, if no ones going to read it then I'll just focus my time towards Undercover instead. Let me know.

Chapter 8 - A Legitimate Alibi

Liz slowly opened her eyes and realized that she was no longer in the confined room with Max. Instead she was in a hospital room propped up against a few pillows. An older lady walked in and handed her a few pills.

“Here, take these. They’ll make you feel better.”

“Where am I?” Liz questioned as she took a gulp of water to wash the pills down with.

“You’re in a hospital room. Don’t you remember anything that happened?”

Liz glanced down and noticed that her wrist was wrapped up in a bandage, and the blood had seeped thorough a little bit.

“Yeah, I got frustrated and I hit the window. I thought it was plastic or something like that, but I was wrong. My hand broke through the glass, and Max healed me. He’s a...he’s an alien.”

The nurse broke into a fit of laughter. “Dear, maybe you aren’t ready to be released from the hospital just yet. This guy you’re talking about is no alien. He freaked out when he saw all of the blood and he called for an officer. Then you were sent here. Simple as that. I assure you that there were no aliens of any kind. You passed out so you were probably just dreaming.”

Liz sighed and laughed to herself. Who was she kidding? An alien? She couldn’t even believe that such a thought had entered her mind. Then reality came back to her and she remembered that Max was supposed to have a hearing at 10:30 in the morning. She glanced at the clock and noticed that it was already 10:15.

“Am I good to go?” Liz questioned not really caring what the answer was.

“Yeah, you just need to sign some papers. Are you positive you don’t want to stay and make sure you’re alright?”

“Yeah, I’m positive. So where are those papers?”

*******************

Liz quickly parked her car and ran up the steps of the court house.

“Liz, what happened?” Maria asked as she saw her best friend running.

“I cut my wrist pretty badly and I was in the hospital.”

“Then what are you doing here? Come on, we’re going home.”

“No, Maria! That’s exactly why I had to come. I knew that you would just leave if I didn’t show up and I was right! I mean, we’re already 15 minutes late and your lazy ass is still sitting out here!”

“Liz-”

“No, Maria! We’ll talk later. Let’s go.” Liz ordered. When Maria gave her a look saying you’re out of your mind, Liz emphasized her point. “Now!”

Liz and Maria walked into the court room, and the judge immediately called Maria over.

“You better have a good reason for being late Ms. DeLuca, or I’ll hold you in contempt.”

“Your Honor, I entered the building and realized that I had a bit of a problem, in the female sense, so I had to run and take care of that. Then I had to send my partner out to get me a new outfit so my presence wouldn’t be horribly disgusting. I apologize. I promise that it won’t happen again.”

“Well, you were only 15 minutes late so it’s no big deal. Just please try to catch these problems before they occur next time.”

“Yes your honor,” Maria replied before leaving the bench.

She sat down next to Max and Liz and began looking through a file. Maria glanced at a picture and noticed something oddly familiar about it.

“Your Honor, may I request a recess?”

“Ms. DeLuca, please approach the bench.”

Maria did as she was told.

“The trial just began and you’re already requesting a recess? Please explain why.”

“I believe I may have found something that will bring this to an end quicker then I could have hoped for. I just need a day to investigate it.”

The judge looked her over before replying. “You’re lucky that I am familiar with your work, and that I trust you know what you’re doing. The trial will resume tomorrow at noon. Don’t be late.”

“What was that all about?” Liz questioned.

“You’ll see. I told the guard that I wanted to speak to ax in the back room so lets go.”

******************************

“So what are you trying to say?”

“I’m trying to say you’re innocent.”

“Well I could have told you that!” Max replied.

“Max, where were you on the 14th?”

“Teaching a class.”

“Yeah, I know that. I mean afterwards.”

“I’d rather not say.”

“Look, you’re on trial for killing some guy on the 14th. Now you can tell me something that I already know, or we can say screw it and continue to let them all think you did it.”

“I was at the doctor’s office all day after class.”

“What for?” Liz asked.

“I was undergoing another diagnostic test. I have cancer.”

“You’re kidding right?”

“He’s not Liz. I have the doctors report right here in my hand.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Liz questioned while trying to fight back a few tears.

“I didn’t want you to feel sorry for me. I wanted to see how you really felt about me. Not about my illness.”

Liz shook her head and ran out of the room not able to handle it anymore.

“Go after her, she’s your friend.” Max said to Maria.

“She’s my friend, yes, but you’re my client. Besides, she’ll get over it sooner or later. Now, back to these other papers...”

*******************

“Mr. Jameson,” Maria began, “I have an offer that you couldn’t possibly refuse.”

“And that would be?”

“Drop the case against Mr. Evans.”

“And why would I do that?”

“Because it will save your reputation as a shitty lawyer, that’s why. You see, the way I figured it is Ms. Smith has it in for Max. I don’t know, maybe she was an angry neighbor, or an old friend. Anyways, her father died a horrible death and she figured she could place the blame on my client. But you knew one tiny detail, my client had a legitimate alibi.”

“You can’t prove it.”

“See, that’s where you’re wrong. You had a talk with his doctor, and you paid him to keep his mouth shut. Thing is, I paid more. Now I have you on two accounts of breaking the law. Shall I dig deeper and find more?”

“No, actually, I’m seeing things a bit more clearly. I think we’re going to drop the case against Max Evans.”

“Good boy,” Maria replied as she walked out of the room.

*******************

“Liz,” Maria called out as she walked through the front door.

“What?” Liz dryly asked.

“I just thought I’d let you know that the case against Max was dropped.”

“Thank you,” Liz replied knowing that her friend didn’t have to help her out.

“What the hell is your problem?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, why did you leave earlier today? Don’t you think that was a bit heartless? Max told you something serious and you just left. He should be at home rejoicing over the fact that he’s no longer being tried for murder, but he’s not. Instead he’s at home upset because once again little Miss Parker is pissed at him.”

“Look, Maria. Things are just difficult okay? I mean, we flirt, then we fight, then we flirt and then we fight. And I mean, I would have stopped it after the first fight, but I just couldn’t. There’s this feeling that I have for him and I can’t seem to explain it.”

“Babe, it’s called fate.” Maria said as if that explained everything.

“Now you sound like Max.”

“Well, what can I say? Great minds think alike.” She replied while walking towards her bedroom.

“By the way, why did you stay and help Max after I left?”

“Because I knew you two were going to end up together, and well, that couldn’t happen if he was in jail for a crime that he never even committed.” Maria said before closing her door

A Little side note so no one here is confused...

Max is not an alien. Liz just thought he was because of her dream when she was passed out. I decided to go ahead and keep this fic non aliens for the people that b-mailed me and requested it to be like that *happy*

Hey people,

Well, I have some more news. I am working on yet another fic. Yep, you heard me right. It's most likely going to be called The New Boy In Town. It will be AU and different from what I usually do. I sort of break up the group in a way with who's related to whom. Anyways, I'll need a beta so Abby, let me know if you want to do it or what.
