Title: Learning To Love Again
Summary: Max looses his wife, and Liz is pregnant, and escaping her abusive husband
Category: CC, Mainly M/L
Disclaimer: I don't own anything, so don't sue! I'm broke anyway.
Author's Note: None of them are aliens (that screws it up) Tess and Ava are twin sisters, Jesse never knew Isabel, and was never in Roswell. None of them know Liz yet either. She and Jesse live in New York, and Max and the others live in Roswell. They're 24 years old. Also, Max and Tess own the Crashdown.
Prologue: (It's a bit UC, but I'll turn totally CC soon)
It was long passed midnight, in mid-April. In New Mexico, the spring was warm enough for shorts in the day, but still bitter cold at night. That cold, rainy night embodied Max's depression. It had been four months and three days since they found out about Tess' disease, and that long since Max Evans life changed.
She was sleeping soundly in his arms, and he pushed back his tears. He softly kissed the top of her blonde head, and placed his hand on her stomach. Tess was nearly a month pregnant, and probably wouldn't start showing for a few months. Until then, the baby was their secret, and that was what worried Max the most. The doctor had warned them, once Tess found out she was pregnant, but she refused to have an abortion. It had been their dream to have a baby, and she was determined to have it. Only, Max saw how weak it made her, and he didn't want to lose his wife.
She stirred, and Max focused his attention back on her fluttering eyes.
"I love you" She said.
Max brushed away his tears and smiled. "I love you too"
That was the last moment that the two of them were happy. Three days later, Tess collapsed in the Crashdown, and a week later, she gave up on life.
The day she died, Max was sitting on the edge of her hospital bed sobbing. Tess' twin sister Ava was the one who found him there. Max and Ava had been best friends since the Hardings moved to Roswell eighteen years ago, and she knew him better than anyone. She didn't say a word when she walked into the room, she just pulled him into a hug, and let him cry.
"T-Tess was pregnant" That was the first time he had spoken those words to anyone. "I killed her"
Ava was at a loss for words. How could she not see it? She looked at the broken man in her arms, who was one of the most caring and sensitive men she had ever met. In no way was the death of her sister Max's fault. "No Max...the disease killed her. Loving you is what kept her alive so long"
Three more days passed, and Tess was buried in the Roswell Cemetary on a beautiful April morning. Around her grave stood her five closest friends: Ava's boyfriend Kyle, Max's sister Isabel and her fiance Alex, and Alex's sister and his girlfriend Maria. And then there was Max and Ava. The two of them had taken Tess' death the hardest, and stood side by side weeping. Her coffin was lowered into the ground, and her tombstone set in place. Theresa Evans. Loving wife, sister, and friend. May she and her unborn child live in eternal peace.
A few thousand miles away, Elizabeth Parker was living in her own, silent hell. Her doctor had just called with her pregnancy test results, and they were positive. She sat at the counter in the upper-class New York City apartment that she and her fiance shared, crying her eyes out. Her fiance...that's why she was so upset. Jesse Ramirez was rich, sexy, and everything a woman could want. That was, until she had him. Two years earlier, Liz and Jesse's eyes met across a crowded room, and they went out for drinks. One thing led to another, and she woke up in his bed the next morning. After that, they were always together, and he proposed at his promotion dinner a year and a half later.
But their picture perfect relationship wasn't at all what it seemed. Liz ran her fingers over her bruised left arm. Those bruises would be the least of her problem when Jesse found out that she was pregnant. The subject of children was one of the things that enraged him the most. He didn't want them, and Liz did.
She was torn from her thoughts as the door opened, and Jesse was standing before her. He had a big, goofy grin on his face, and Liz smiled just looking at it. He was in a good mood, and now would be the perfect time to tell him. Or, it would have been, until he swept her off her chair, and they wound up making love all night.
She slid out of his arms early the next morning, and was making breakfast in the kitchen when he woke up. Jesse wrapped his strong arms around her tiny body, and she looked up and him and tried to reach his lips. He kissed her softly, and ran his hands up and down her body.
When breakfast was ready, the two of them sat at the counter and didn't speak, just enjoying each other's presence. That was, until Liz broke the silence.
"I have something to tell you" She said timidly. "You have to promise you won't get mad"
He narrowed his eyes at her. "That's not something I can promise, until I know what you're going to tell me"
She winced. "Well...okay...I went to the doctors on Wendsday, and I, God, I don't know how to put this. I'm pregnant Jesse"
Liz wouldn't allow her eyes to meet his, she was waiting for the impact of his fist, or for him to curse her out. He did neither, instead, he remained calm.
"Get rid of it" Jesse said, very simply.
Her heart stopped. There was no way she could get rid of her child. "But I-"
He cut her off. "Excuse me, did I hear a 'but' from you?"
Just as she expected, his fist hit the soft skin around her eye, and she bit back her tears. "Alright Beth,if you want to be a little fucking bitch, than I'll do it for you" There was no way she could fight him. He pushed her to the floor, threw himself on top of Liz, and he beat her until she was bloody.
Two months and 6 days had passed since Tess' death, and Max had finally gone home for the night. He'd slept on Kyle and Ava's couch long enough. His bed smelled like Tess...everything in that house was her. But he survived. And now, it was time for the enivitable. He had to go to the Crashdown office.
Tess had been the one to run the Crashdown, while Max worked in his private law practice. Now, he imagined that the papers were a wreck...Maria had taken charge of it, and it was obvious how that would work out. He stepped into the office, and it was just as much Tess' as the house was.
Max sat at her desk, and looked at the wedding picture. She looked so beautiful that day, and continued to look that way, right up until she took her dying breath. He brushed away his tears, and spent the next hour re-filing papers. He was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in" He called. Max figured it was Ava, because she'd spent the past month doing whatever she could to check up on him.
He was taken by surprise when it wasn't Ava he saw, but a petite, dark haried woman standing in the doorway. Right away, Max noticed that the woman was pregnant, and he held back his tears when he thought of Tess.
"I'm sorry to interrupt you" She said. "But this is the only place in town that I could find hiring.
Max looked into her dark brown eyes, and he could see the pain and heartache. It was similar to what he saw, when he looked in the mirror. He felt sorry for the woman, and it took him a moment to realize that he was staring.
He stood up and extended his hand. "I'm Max Evans" He said.
"Elizabeth Parker" She said softly, and her eyes darted around the room, almost checking to see if she was safe.
She sat down across from him, and they began discussing her employment. She eased up a bit, until Max asked her about her last place of employment.
"I was a lawyer at Antar-Ramirez in New York City" She said, nearly inaudibly.
Max was puzzled. Why would someone leave one of the country's best law firms, and come to work at his little restaraunt in Roswell, New Mexico?
"And, Miss Parker, what was your reason for leaving your job?"
She shuddered. "I just needed to get out of New York, start a new life for myself."
He usually wasn't this friendly, but he could tell she needed to feel safe. "I own my own law firm downtown, and if I reviewed your files, perhaps you'd like to work with me"
Liz wasn't stupid. She knew that as much as she wanted to accept this offer, it would involve a call to Jesse's office, and he'd know where she was. That was the last thing she needed for her baby. Liz had nearly miscarried the morning she told Jesse, and she couldn't take that chance again.
"Thank you very much for the offer Mr. Evans, but I think I'd be happier here for now."
He was completley confused. There must be a lot more to Liz Parker than he could see. "Alright than, you're hired. As long as you call me Max from now on"
She smiled, and he smiled back at her. The first time either one had smiled in two months.

Thanks a lot for the feedback! This is my first fanfic, so I wasn't expecting a positive reponse. I'm working on my second part right now, so hopefully it'll be up within the hour.

As promised, here's part 2! I'm starting on part 3 now, so I'll try to finish.
It was already Liz's second week at the Crashdown, and Roswell was starting to feel more like home. She'd befriended Max and the others, and she spent much more time thinking about them (particularly Max), than Jesse.
One night, Maria came by right before closing time, and she and Liz had got to talking. Maria told her about Tess' death, and she was shocked. Max was one of the nicest men she'd ever met, and it wasn't right that he had to go through pain like this.
Now, Liz was sprawled out on the bed in her new apartment, watching "Life Is Beautiful" and thinking about Max. For some reason, she just couldn't stop thinking about him. He was a great friend, and she wanted to be there for him, even though they'd just met.
Back in Max's house, he and Ava were sitting at the kitchen table. Kyle was out of town for a football game, and she never liked being home alone. It always freaked him out a little when she walked in the door because of how much she looked like Tess. But Ava was just Ava, his best friend, and Tess was so different. Some people might think that Kyle would be jealous having his girlfriend stay with her twin sister's widower, though he wasn't. Max was his friend, and he trusted Ava. Besides that, the two of them had been best friends since they were six.
"Does it ever stop hurting?" Max asked.
"I'll tell you when it does for me" She replied.
They both sighed and were silent. Finally, Max had to speak.
"Ava, Liz Parker. I have a really weird feeling that something is wrong"
She looked at him weirdly. "What do you mean?"
"She worked at Antar-Ramirez in New York, and now, she came here pregnant asking for a job at the Crashdown. I offered her a job at my firm and she turned it down. Something just doesn't add up."
"I've never seen a father to her child around, have you?"
"No, and that just adds to the puzzle."
The next morning, Max sat at the breakfast table with Ava, eating his cereal and reading the New York Times.
"Ava! There's an article on Antar-Ramirez!"
Max quickly skimmed the article, without waiting for Ava to reply."Listen to this: 'Partner Jesse Ramirez has reported yesterday morning that his fiance is missing. Elizabeth Parker, also one of Antar-Ramirez's top lawyers is clamied to have been last seen leaving the couple's apartment for milk early yesterday morning'" He slammed his fist down on the table. "This is bullshit!! Total bullshit! Liz has been here for two weeks, and she's just being reported missing now?"
Ava put her hand on Max's shoulder. "You've gotta calm down Max, you don't know what the situation is"
That was the first thing Ava ever said that reminded Max of Tess. Normally, the two of them were the hot heads, and Tess was always the one to straighten everything out. But Tess was gone...Tears sprung to Max's eyes, and Ava knew exactly what Max was thinking. She pulled Max into a hug, and the cried together.
Liz was beyond freaking out. She never thought Jesse would report her missing, and he did! The Close Encounters theme played, and Liz knew that someone was in the Crashdown. She turned around, and it was Max. She couldn't help but notice that his eyes were red, but she didn't say anything to him.
"Hi Max" She said, dropping the newspaper in the garbage.
"Hey" Max saw what she did, and couldn't pinpoint what she was hiding. "Liz, I read about you in the paper today. Plain and simple, he wasn't asking her to explain, just stating what he read.
Her dark eyes met his, and he could see the tears welling up. For the first time, he wanted to take her in his arms and tell her it would all be okay. He was shocked that he felt anything for her, so soon after Tess, but he felt that spark in his heart.
Liz was unsure of what to say. Something inside told her to tell him, but she wasn't quite sure she should. "I saw it too. I don't even know what to say...Jesse, well I guess you can assume that he's the father of my baby"
Max nodded, and she continued. "He doesn't want kids. Money over everything, you know?" Without waiting for his response, she went on. "He wanted me to have an abortion, and I couldn't do that."
Max felt the heat from his own tears rising up, thinking of what the doctor told him and Tess. She wouldn't do it either, and she was gone now, with the baby. Without saying another word, Liz unbuttoned the middle buttons or her uniform, exposing her 4 month stomach, covered in brusies.

I'm working really hard on part 3, I'm hoping it'll be a real dreamer part, but I'm debating a bit.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! It makes me wanna keep writing
He looked at her stomach in shock. This man...the man who was claiming Liz to be missing had hurt her, and tried to kill their unborn child! Max didn't know what he could do, but all he knew was that he had unexplainable feelings for this beautiful woman. He wrapped his arms around her, and let her cry until her heart was content.
"I didn't know what to do Max" She sobbed. This was the first time that she'd ever truly opened herself up to another person. "He'd hurt me before, but never an attack like the day he found out I was pregnant."
He stroked her hair and continued to hold her. "I won't let him hurt you ever again. None of us will"
Ava walked into the Crashdown, and saw Max and Liz holding each other. She was shocked to say the least. Not shocked in an angry way, but just uncertain. The two of them were crying, so obviously neither of them were emotionally stable. Max, because of Tess, and Liz, because of whatever Max was trying to learn.
He felt Liz's child kick against his stomach, and he looked into her eyes. "Can I...touch your baby?"
Liz couldn't help but smile. The idea that anyone actually cared about her baby sent waves of relief through her. "Yes, please do"
He placed his hand on her slightly buldging stomach, and she put her smaller hand over his. The baby kicked again, causing them both to smile. She winced slightly, when the baby kicked harder against the soft, wounded flesh of her stomach, and Max caught her before she fell to the ground in pain.
"I'm going to take you home"
"Max, I have to work...I need the money"
"Don't worry about it, what's more important is that you rest. I don't want you to get sick."
His soft eyes melted her, and she gave in. "Alright...but I'll work a double tomorrow"
Max smiled and put his arm around her for steadying purposes. He saw Ava in the booth by the door when he walked Liz to his car. "Watch the place for me"
He drove her home, and helped her up to two flights of stairs to her apartment. He smiled as he walked in with her. It was small and neat, very Liz-like.
"Your place is nice Liz" He said shyly.
"Thank you. It's kind of a mess"
Her "kind of a mess" was his spotless, he thought with a smile, and that's when he realized how much he'd been smiling lately. Liz Parker was the one who was doing this to him.
He sat on her couch and watched TV while she slept in the bedroom nextdoor. Max wasn't quite sure that he wanted to leave her yet. An hour or so later, Liz stepped out of her room with her hair in a high ponytail, wearing a pair of flannel pants and a tight fitting white tee-shirt.
"Hey." She said softly. "I didn't expect you to stay"
"Oh..I'm sorry. I could go if you'd like" He said, and stood up.
"No, that's not what I meant. It was really nice of you. Thanks"
Before Max knew it, he was pulling Liz close to him, and his lips were on hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and the two of them lost themselves in each other. Liz parted his lips with her tounge, and deepened the kiss, while the two of them dropped onto the couch.
Author's Note: Okay, don't worry, the whole Jesse thing will be addressed much more in depth in the next part, but I had to have a little fun with this :D

I'm back with the new part! I decided to put off the Jesse thing until the next part, because I had a really good idea for this. And everyone, thank you so much for the feedback. I never expected anyone to like it, because it's my first...
Over the next month, as Liz's baby grew, so did the relationship between she and Max. Only they knew why she left New York, and that's the way it would stay.
One hot July day, Liz finished working her shift around one, and decided to surprise Max with lunch. She packed a picnic basket, and headed to his office. The secretary told her that he was taking an important phone call, so she sat and waited for a half an hour. Max finally came out of the office, looking extremely upset.
"Lucy, I'm taking my lunch" He said, and then saw Liz sitting there. His entire figure relaxed visibly, and she smiled at him.
"I brought you lunch"
"You don't know how good that sounds"
The two of them walked hand in hand to the park, and sat beneath the biggest tree. Liz spread a blanket down, and they ate silently, finally feeling comfortable enough with each other, not to fill the empty space with words. But Liz had something she'd been thinking about for a while, and she was afraid of how Max would react.
"Penny for your thoughts" He said, after noticing the intense look on her face.
"Max...I really don't know how to put this, but would you tell me about Tess?"
She could see his eyes glistening with tears, but he tried to smile. "If you want to know, then I'll try to tell you about her." She nodded for him to continue. "I met the Harding twins when I was six. My mother told me to run next door to see if the new neighbors needed help, and when I knocked on the door, and blonde girl pounced on me-that was Ava. The two of us started wrestling, and then a girl who looked just like her saw us, and ran inside to tell her mother. Mrs. Harding walked outside, and she was furious. I remember her high-pitched scream, when she saw how dirty Ava was. And that's how it was for the next five years. Ava and I would wrestle, play tag and make mudpies, while Tess would just sit and watch, or run in to tell on us." His lip was quivering, and Liz squeezed his hand.
"You don't have to go on, if it's too hard"
"No..I can do it." He said firmly. "It wasn't until sixth grade, when I noticed how beautiful Tess was. I know she looked just like Ava, but she was different. Ava was one of the guys-until high school, that is-but Tess, the moment I saw her at her locker that day, I had the biggest crush on her. It took me two years to finally get up the courage to kiss her. I knocked on the door, and half-expected Ava to attack me, but it was Tess who answered. She turned to call for Ava, but I grabbed her shoulder, and kissed her." He stopped for a moment, and closed his eyes, trying to remember every detail of the moment. He was letting his tears run freely now, and Liz was rubbing his arm. "From that day on, we were together. I thank Ava mainly for that, because she told me everything Tess had to say about me, so I was always ready. We got married two years after we graduated, and we had four years together as husband and wife before we found out about the cancer. Three months after that, we found out she was pregnant." Liz gasped. This was the first time she had heard that Tess was pregnant. "She didn't care what the doctors had to say. Having kids together was always our dream, and she said that if she had to die, she was going to have all of her dreams come true first. I was against it at first, because I was afraid of what it would do to her. She was really upset, and avoided me for days. I finally begged for her forgiveness, and we were so happy. We didn't tell anyone, because we were afraid...and we were convinced that she was going to make it. But, a little over a month into the pregnancy, the disease got the best of her, and she died on April 28th at 4:17 in the afternoon" Max was sobbing as he finished his story, and he buried his head in Liz's chest. She ran her fingers through his hair while he cried.
"I know Max...I understand"
Max suddenly got really angry with Liz. "No Liz, you don't know, and you never will!" He yelled, pulling away from her. She was in shock... "You've never lost anyone that you love! Tess was the most amazing woman there ever was"
She couldn't believe what she was hearing. How could this man, the caring, sensitive man who made her feel like she never had, be saying these cold, heartless things to her? She hadn't done anything but try to comfort him.
"Fine Max, then I don't know why the hell I'm wasting my time!" She said, and got up and left him sitting alone under the tree.
Author's Note: Don't worry guys, Max'll redeem himself in the next part, I swear. I'm gonna be back in a little while with part 5.

I'm back with more! It's a little short...sorry. I'm hoping to get 6 up tonight as well.
Nine days had gone by, and Liz hadn't spoken to Max. Neither one was ready to crawl back to the other, and although they wouldn't admit it, their seperation was taking a harsh toll on both of them.
When Liz was working, Max avoided the Crashdown at all costs. He didn't tell anyone what was going on, not even Ava. Maria tried to pry information out of Liz, but she simply said that she and Max weren't speaking.
On the tenth day after the fight, Max went to the cemetary with daisies, Tess' favorite flower. He placed them on the grave, and sat before it, with his head in his hands.
"Tess, I just don't know what to do. I thought that you'd be the only woman that I'd ever love, and now you're gone. When I met Liz, I knew I felt something for her, and now look at what I've done. I hate to admit this, especially to you, but I'm falling fast for her. I'm scared that you'll be dissapointed with me, and I just wish I knew what you would think."
"I think that you should go to her" A voice said.
"Tess? Is that you?" Max looked up and saw Ava standing on the other side of the grave.
"The next best thing." She said, and Max cracked a small smile. Ava had always said that to him, ever since the day he fell for her sister. He realized that she was the only one who could help him now, so he poured his heart out about Liz.
"Max, do you remember what you asked me when we were nine?"
"Do you know what Tess is thinking?" He replied. Max had thought twins could hear each other's thoughts until he was twelve, and Ava finally told him the truth.
"You're right. And now that you've finally realized that I can't, I still know that she would want you to be happy."
"And how do you expect that to happen?"
"Go to Liz. Go, and beg her for forgiveness. You two deserve each other"
She pulled him into a hug, and Max spent the rest of the day figuring out how to get Liz to forgive him.
Liz was counting the money in the register. It was only nine o'clock, but the Crashdown was closed early on Sunday. The door swung open, and she looked up, half-hoping that it was Max. She dropped the roll of quarters when she saw Jesse standing there.
"I tracked your credit card here Beth. Perhaps you should be more careful when you try to escape." His deep voice created a pit in her stomach, and she moved her hands protectively over the baby.
"Jesse, please. I can't do this anymore" She said, tears running down her cheeks. She stepped out from behind the counter, and he saw her buldging stomach. "Just go back to New York"
"I thought I got rid of that" He said, poking her stomach. Liz whimpered in pain. "I can't have a little bastard child running around, can I?" Jesse pushed her hard, and she grabbed his wrist to push him away.
"I'll never come back to New York...just please let my baby live"
"You little bitch!" He yelled and slammed her against the counter. For the first time in over a week, she was really missing Max. Jesse shook her hard, and punched her until she couldn't breathe. She passed out on the Crashdown floor, and Jesse ran out.
Max was finally ready to beg Liz's forgiveness, and he figured she'd be closing up the Crashdown. He went downtown, and saw that the lights were still lit. He went inside, and saw Liz's keys on the counter. He hid the white roses behind his back, and looked around for her. Then, he saw what he never wanted to see, Liz lying in the floor covered in blood.
"Liz. LIZ!" He screamed. "Oh God Liz." She wasn't waking up. He lifted her head gently. "Baby, I'm so sorry" He whispered, and picked up the phone to call 911.

I'm working really hard on the next part...Trust me, you'll find out why he calls her Beth, and you're in for one hell of a shock!

Thanks Sonia, and here I am with the next part!
Max sat in Liz's room, holding her hand throughout the night. Over and over, he blamed himself for not being there with her. Had he not been so cruel, he might have picked her up after work, or at least been there! She had yet to wake up, and he was frantic. The doctors weren't sure if the baby would make it, and Liz would be devestated. The cops had questioned Max about what happened, and he answered them completley honestly-they were going to find Jesse Ramierez for questioning as soon as possible.
Liz awoke and opened her eyes slowly. Her entire body was swollen, and she wasn't sure if who she saw beside her was a delusion or the real thing.
"Max" She whispered.
He jumped from his chair at the sound of her voice. "Liz." His eyes filled with tears, he was so happy that she was alive. "I'm sorry I got angry. You mean so much to me, and I was so afraid that I'd lost you. I've only known you two months, and yet I love you...I love you so much."
Tears rolled down Liz's swollen cheeks. "I thought you hated me Max. I love you too...I've never been more miserable than when Jesse came in, and you weren't there."
"I'm sorry baby. I'm so sorry. I promised that I'd never let him hurt you again, and this time I mean it."
Liz wrapped her arms around Max, and they cried together until the sun began to rise.
For the next two weeks, Liz was forced to stay in bed, and Max spent every spare moment taking care of her. What she didn't know though, was that at the office, Max was doing all he could to get Jesse in jail for maximum sentance, with no parole. The court date was the 5th of September, and that meant he only had a little over a month to prepare the case. Liz was too traumatized right now to discuss the impending trial, but he knew she was thinking about it.
One day, when he was sitting on her bed with his arms around her, Liz took Max by surprise.
"I'm terrified to see him Max. After everything he put me through." Her was shaking, and he'd never seen her so scared.
"He's never going to touch you again Liz. Remember that."
"There's something I never told you Max...remember how I told you that Jesse and I met in a crowded room? Well...that room was a suite at the Mariott, and I was there for his best friends bachelor party. And, the only women at bachelor parties are, well strippers"
Max's eyes popped out. He could never imagine someone so innocent as Liz being a stripper.
"I was trying to put myself through Harvard Law, because my parents died when I was 15. I needed the money. It was the most humiliating experience of my life, and I guess Jesse could sense that, so he told me he'd get me out of there. He took me out, and once I was through with school, he hired me at the firm." She inhaled sharply. "That's when things got bad...we had grown close, but he always brought up me stripping in college. He hated that other men had touched me before he did, and he made me feel like a whore. The truth is, Jesse was my first, but he never believed me when I said that. He called me 'Beth,' because he said that Liz sounded like the name of a dime store whore. I never had much slef confidence, and he made me feel even lower. That's when the abuse started. He'd slap me, or push me around at first, and then it got so bad, I'd be wearing pants and long sleeves in the middle of the summer, and making excuses that I fell, or burned myself cooking." She was crying now, and had her head hidden in Max's neck. Max wrapped his arms tighter around Liz, to protect her from everything that could hurt her, and the two of them fell asleep like that.
Finally, Liz was well enough to walk again, and the doctor said that the baby should be born just fine. Times were better for the lovers, even though September was fast approaching. Their days were spent walking in the park, or laughing at some of Roswell's cheezy tourist traps, while they spent nights curled up together watching movies, or looking at the stars in the desert. They were "sweet enough to make your teeth hurt" as Maria would say. They hadn't slept together yet, and they both thought it would be best to wait until after the baby was born. Although they weren't physically intimate yet, the two of them slept together, in the literal form, nearly every night. The one thing that touched Liz the most, was that each day, there were less pictures of Tess at Max's house, and more pictures of her.
Author's Note: Okay, I had to have Liz get out the story of her realtionship with Jesse, like Max did with Tess. The next part (hopefully to be posted tonight) will be the court case, and after that, things should get happier!

Once again, I thank you all for the feedback You're the best! And here's what you've been waiting for
The morning of the trial, Max and Liz were sleeping in a hotel in Santa Fe. It was Max who awoke first, and he carefully released himself from Liz's tight grasp, so not to wake her. She looked so peaceful sleeping so soundly, and Max didn't want to interrupt her. He went out on the balcony and tried to think. This was going to be the hardest case he ever had to do. Not because he didn't think he would win, but because he didn't know how he'd ever be able to contain his anger towards Jesse. Thankfully, he'd asked Ava to be his co-counsler. He always laughed when he thought about that, she'd graduated law school with honors, and did well on the bar exam, but somehow ended up a dancer.
He stared at the rising sun, and before he knew it, Liz had came out and stood in front of him. She titled her head upwards to be kissed, and Max met her request. He wrapped his arms around her, and they stood together until the last shred of darkness was gone.
Max dressed in his typical work clothes, a suit and tie with his hair neatly in place, while Liz dressed in a simple maternity dress. The two of them were the picture perfect couple, and it hurt Liz to think that Max wasn't the father of her baby...even though they weren't married.
As Max and Liz walked in the double doors or the New Mexico Supreme Court, Liz began to shake violently, and Max took hold of her shoulders.
"Baby, what is it?"
Her dark eyes were filled with tears, and she wrapped her arms around Max's neck. "I haven't been in a courtroom since...since I worked at Antar-Ramierez"
"Shhh...it'll be okay" He soothed, and he pressed his forehead to hers.
Ava stood up and turned around as Max walked a very shaken up Liz into the courtroom.
"Liz, you'll never have to see him again when we're through" She said, happy that her best friend was moving on. Liz was perfect for him, and she didn't want to see an asshole like Jesse Ramirez screw that up for them.
It was when he walked Jesse walked in, that Liz was pushed over the edge. She dug her manicured nails into Max's flesh, and struggled to remain in control. He kept his strong arms around her waist, reminding her that he'd always protect her.
For six hours they sat in the courtroom, recessing only once for lunch. Liz's stomach churned as they awaited the jury's verdict, Ava drummed her fingers on the desk, and Max was looking coldly at Jesse. Finally, the head juror stepped up with the verdict.
"Your honor, we find the defendant guiltly of the assault and abuse of Elizabeth Parker, and of the attempted murder of her unborn child."
"Thank you. Jesse Ramirez, I sentence you to 20 years in New Mexico State prison, with no possibility of parole until your 15th year. Case closed."
Max picked Liz up, and pulled her close to him as Jesse was led out in handcuffs. Both Max and Liz hugged Ava, and thanked her for all her help. She went to Kyle, and wrapped her arms around him.
They had gone back to the hotel hours ago, after going out for dinner. It was 1:17 in the morning, and Liz was sitting alone on the balcony with her journal.
It's September 5th, and this is the first time I've written in my journal in months. Ever since I met Max Evans, my life has changed. I used to write as a way to escape from the pain and heartache of Jesse's abuse, and for the first time in two and a half years, I don't have to be afraid. The physical pain is gone, and the bruises healed, and yet something inside of me still aches. Max is the one person I've been able to turn to, and maybe that's why I stopped writing. He saved my life the day I was lying there, bloodied and broken on the Crashdown floor. Each night I sleep in his arms, and I know he's the one I want to be with forever. He's the first person who has ever taken the time to love me. Even before my parents died, they didn't have the time. Daddy was always at work, and mother was too self-absorbed to care about me. I don't feel pity for myself, but rather, I'm glad that Max is the only one. Although I know I'm not the only one who has loved him, and I'm okay with that. I'm even okay with the fact that he will always love Tess. I know that his love for her is different than the love he feels for me. But, perhaps the one regret I do have about all of this, is that Max isn't the father of my baby. It's not right that Jesse has a child that he doesn't want, and worse than that, tried to kill, while Max would do anything for a baby, and he doesn't get one. He never speaks about it, but I see it in his eyes whenever he touches my stomach, and holds me close. Max Evans is an amazing man, and I truly hope that someday, I get to be his wife.
She closed her journal, and turned around to see Max standing in the doorway.
"Oh..Max, I was just writing."
"I know love, but come to bed, you've had a long day."
TBC~Next up, the birth!

I'm trying to post as much as I can get out now, because I'm leaving on Sunday for 2 weeks, and I won't be able to post as all. But, I bought a new notebook today, and I plan to spend six hours each way on the plane writing, so all I have to do is key it in when I get home.

I'm here with a new part Once again, thanks for all the feedback! I'll have the next part up ASAP.
September passed uneventfully, and Liz's stomach was growing faster each day. As the calender changed to October, New Mexico was having an unusually cold spell. Max had gone away for a week for a case, and Liz was totally miserable. The nights were dropping down into the 30s, and there was no one to keep her warm. She could hardly stand up, and working was a total nightmare. Ava and Maria tried to help her out, but nothing works like love. Even though she talked to Max every night, she wasn't happy. She begged him to come home, but he couldn't leave the case.
On October 16th, Liz was curled up in bed alone, when she felt an ache in her stomach like she never had before. She was in labor, and she knew it, but she wanted Max to be in the delivery room with her. It started to ache more and more, until she picked up the phone and called Ava. It was almost three in the morning, and Kyle picked up.
"Liz? Is everything alright? It's 3:40 in the morning"
"I...I think I'm in labor."
Five hours later, Liz was still in labor, and already exhausted. Ava had been calling Max from her cell, since they had gotten there, and finally he picked up.
"Max! I've been calling you for five hours!"
"I was in court, I'm sorry."
"Don't be sorry, just get your ass on a plane and get back to Roswell! Liz is in labor!"
"Oh shit, I'll leave on the next flight, I should be there in a few hours"
Three hours after that, she still hadn't delieved the baby.
"Just let it be born now!!!" She screamed.
Ava and Kyle were both at her sides, and the others were in the waiting room.
"Soon Lizzie, soon" Kyle said.
"I want Max with me"
"He's on his way, a little while longer."
Six more hours passed, and Max finally ran in.
"Max!" He ran to her and kissed her sweaty forehead.
"I'm here baby, my flight was delayed."
"It doesn't matter...you're here now"
Nineteen hours after Liz went into labor, she gave birth to a perfect little girl. When the doctor placed the baby in her arms, she began to cry. She was all alone in her room, because Max had stepped out to give her some time alone with her child. The baby squirmed, and then smiled up at her. Liz's heart melted, and all the worries she had were gone.
"We're gonna do alright sweetie, I'll always protect you" She vowed. The baby fell asleep, and she gently kissed her tiny head.
Max peeked his head in the door, and Liz waved him inside. He stood at the door for a moment, taking in just how beautiful she looked with the baby in her arms, and then moved to her side.
"She's beautiful' Liz breathed.
"Like her mother"
Liz just smiled and kept her eyes on the sleeping baby.
"What are you going to call her?"
"Felicity." She decided. "Felicity Michelle"
Max put his hand on Liz's shoulder, and smiled at Felicity, suddenly wishing that the baby was his. He was surprised how quickly he and Liz had fallen in love, and he knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. It wasn't fair that Liz had to raise a baby on her own, and even though she'd do great, it wasn't fair that Felicity wouldn't have a father. For the first time since he met Liz, Max was completley sure of what he wanted to do.
Just gotta leave you guys in a bit of suspense. Don't worry, it'll be up in an hour or so

Two weeks after Liz and Felicity were safely home, Max was ready to put his plan into action. After he told Ava about his plans to propose, she cried, not because she was angry, but because she was going through a rough time with Kyle, and missing her sister. The two of them agreed that both she and Liz needed a day to themselves, and that gave Max a perfect day to get what he had to do done.
Max showed up at Liz's apartment at nine AM, prepared to watch Felicity for the day. She kissed the baby goodbye, and gave Max exact directions on how to take care of her, even though he'd seen her do it so many times. He waved her off, and let the baby sleep for a while. He went into the kitchen, and started to cook dinner, but that was a complete disaster. Felicity started to cry, so he went to take care of her. He changed her diaper and calmed her down, and then called Isabel for help. She and Maria dragged Michael and Alex, and had them clean up the kitchen, while they cooked. Max got the candles out, and set the table for two.
By seven, everything was completley ready, and the two couples left, wishing Max good luck. He changed his clothes, and went into Felicity's room. They sat in the rocker, and he rocked her to sleep. Even when she was sleeping, he couldn't put her down. She was so much like her mother, both in looks, and how she quickly found her way into his heart.
At 9:15, Liz walked in to see the house lit by candles, and Lifehouse playing.
Find me here, speak to me
I want to feel you, I need to hear you.
You are the light, that's leading me
To the place, where I find peace, again.
Max emerged from Felicity's room, and gave Liz his classic smile. He was shocked to see her in a red strapless dress and heels.
"You knew" He said softly, and moved to kiss her.
"No, Ava made me try on this dress, and insisted I wear it home" She put her arms around his neck, and kissed him deeply.
"You look beautiful" He could hardly breathe seeing her like that.
"So do you"
You are the stregnth, that keeps me walking.
You are the hope, that keeps me trusting.
You are the life, to my soul.
You are my purpose, you're everything.
He led her to the table, and pulled out her chair for her. Her eyes widened at how perfect everything looked.
"Oh..Max. It's amazing."
"Not nearly as amazing as you are Liz"
He poured her a glass of wine, and she wrapped her leg around his.
"How was the baby for you?"
"As good as gold. She's really making me fall in love with her"
"Good, because I always want you to be a part of her life."
They ate their dinner fairly quietly, indulged in each other's eyes. When they were through, Max smiled. "There's something I need to tell you"
And how can I stand here with you
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be
Any better than this.
Her dark eyes looked concerened, and he squeezed her hand.
"It's not bad, I promise"
She relaxed a little, and he continued.
"Liz, the moment you walked into the office at the Crashdown, I saw something in you. Even though you looked so scared, you were beautiful. You made me smile for the first time in months, and I never realized that I was falling in love with you. I didn't want my heart broken again, and I was afraid to let you in. But when I came to apologize to you and found you covered in blood on the floor, I realized how much you mean to me. Everything about you is perfect, and I want to do everything in my power to make you happy for the rest of your life. I know I have a past, but you are my future."
Her eyes were filled with tears, when he got down on his knees and took her hand.
"Will you marry me?"
She got down on her knees with him, and kissed him softly.
"I'd want nothing else in the world"
You calm the storms, and you give me rest.
You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall.
You still my heart, and you take my breath away.
Would you take me in? Take me deeper now
"I want to show you how much I love you" She whispered.
The started kissing passionatley, and she unbuttoned his shirt. Max carried her into the bedroom, and they made love. When Liz fell asleep, droplets of rain were running down the windows, and Max was watching her sleep. This was the happiest he'd ever been.
And how can I stand here with you
And not be moved by you?
Would you tell me how could it be
Any better than this.
Would you tell me how could it be
Any better than this?
I hope ya all like

Yech, I'm halfway through the next part and having a massive writers block! It's too blah...I've gotta get some more drama in there.

Okay, it took me long enough to get through this part, but I'm here. I'm hoping to get one more update up tonight, but I noticed that Lizwell just updated Perchance to Dream, so I've really gotta read that...
Three weeks later, Liz's apartment was in boxes, preparing to move in with Max. After they got engaged, Max asked her to move in with him, because they spent enough time with each other anyway. Maria had come over to help get everything packed, and they spent a lot of time bonding.
Back at Max's, Ava was helping him get rid of Tess' things. She was the one who told him that he should do it, because it wasn't right for the house to be saturated in old dreams. She knew that Max and Liz would have a great future together, and if he didn't let his past go, it couldn't happen. She was right, Max promised that Liz was his future, and he'd keep that promise.
Liz rocked Felicity to sleep that night, and her heart was full.
"You're going to have a daddy tomorrow" She whispered. The baby just gurgled.
Two days after Max proposed, Liz told him that she wished Felicity was his daughter, and he said that it was possible. She was shocked, to say the least. Not in her wildest dreams did she imagine that Max would actually want to adopt Felicity! She had thrown her arms around him, and reminded him again just how much she loved him.
Early the next morning, Max came and picked up Liz and Felicity. It was late November, and it was getting really cold. She handed Max the carseat, and wrapped the baby in a blanket and held her close for warmth. Max put his arm around her waist, and they got Felicity into the car.
All went well, and the adoption papers were signed by a family lawyer. The baby was now Felicity Michelle Evans, and Max and Liz would be married in three months.
"Stay with me tonight" He said.
"Max...I have so much to do before the move. I have 2 days before the term is up, and if I don't finish, I'll have to stay another month."
He put his fingers to her lips. "Stop worrying so much, it'll be taken care of."
"But the baby..."
He took her from Liz's arms. "I think Felicity wants to stay in her new house tonight..oh yes she does" He tickled her, and she giggled. He held her up in front of his face. "Pwease mommy, pwease" Liz couldn't help but smile at Max's imitation of a child.
"Okay, but I've gotta be out early tomorrow."
When they got back to the house, Max was beaming.
"What's going on?"
"I've got a surprise for you ladies" He said, and led them up the stairs. He opened the door to what used to be the guest room, and revealed a beautiful nursery. The furniture was all white oak, the floor was carpeted in baby pink, and the walls matched the carpet, and were bordered in stars and moons. Liz's new rocker was beside the window, partially so she could look out at the stars, but mainly because Max loved seeing her form lit by the moon.
She gasped. "This is beautiful...so beautiful" He smiled and put a now sleeping Felicity in her crib.
"It gets better" He opened the adjoining door he had installed, and tears came to Liz's eyes when she saw the master bedroom. Everything was different, and there were white rose petals and candles everywhere. "This is our house now baby, you're done moving. Ava and the others took care of it while we were out today"
"I just can't believe you did all of this for me. God, you're an amazing man Max Evans" She put her arms around Max's neck, and lost herself in the kiss. He picked her up, and Liz wrapped her legs around his waist. The two of them fell on the bed together, and made love for the rest of the night.
Liz pulled Max's tee-shirt over her head when she woke up to Felicity's cries, and went into her room to feed her. As soon as she was in her mother's arms, she stopped her crying, and smiled up at Liz.
"That's my good girl" She carried her downstairs to warm a bottle, and was cooking eggs when Max woke up.
"Hey baby" She smiled. No one had ever called her beautiful before.
"Acually, I was talking to Felicity"
Big tears formed in her eyes, but she brushed them away. Right, why would anyone call her beautiful. Before she knew it, Max had her in his arms.
"Don't cry Lizzie, I was only kidding. Of course I was talking to you." He stroked her hair softly, and held her tightly against him. It was things like this that really made him hate Jesse Ramirez.
Okay, the ending of this was just a little prelude to all the healing Liz still has to do. The next part is really going to focus on that.

Part 11 A:
Max stood next to his and Liz's bed, two weeks after she and Felicity had moved in. He never imagined how many times he'd wipe tears from her beautiful cheeks. Jesse had really done a number on her, and he'd never forgive him for hurting his Liz. So many nights, she had survived tortured sleep, and would jump at the slightest sounds. He wondered why suddenly she was acting like this, so he had talked to Alex, who was a phycologist. He seemed to think that she was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and there really was no cure.
Felicity began to cry in the room next-door, and before Max could react, Liz sat upright and looked around in terror.
"Lizzie..it's okay. It's just the baby" He said softly, and came to her side. She wrapped her arms around him, and buried her head in his chest.
"I just thought it was him..."
"He's gone now, forever" Another scream pierced the room, and she was completely trembling. Max knew that Liz really needed him, but so did Felicity. He gently wrapped Liz in a blanket, and pressed his forehead to hers. "I'll be right back"
He gently lifted the baby up and tried to get her to sleep. She just wouldn't...She was so hot, and yet she was shivering. In the other room, he could hear Liz's sobs everytime the baby wailed. Max was at a loss either way, but something about Felicity's cries told him that she wasn't right. He got the baby thermometer, and she was running a teperature of nearly 100. She was only a month and a half old, and that was pretty high for such a young baby. She needed to get to a hospital. But Liz was so upset...he couldn't leave her alone, but she wasn't in the right mind to go anywhere. He did the only thing he could think of, call Ava. She and Kyle were always prepared for phone calls at odd hours, and the two of them rushed over. Max was standing in a robe in the baby's room, Felicity was wailing, and Liz was sobbing on the bed. Ava had to take control of the situation.
"Max, listen to me. You need to get Felicity to the hospital. She's really sick. I'll stay here with Liz. She'll be okay until you get back."
He opened his mouth to protest, but Ava wouldn't hear of it. He and Kyle brought the baby out into the freezing night, and took her to the hospital. They were there for two hours, before the doctor finally diagnosed Felicity with the flu, and prescribed medicine for her. By the time they arrived back at the house, it was after four, and Liz was curled up in bed, and Ava was sleeping in the arm chair. Max gently placed Felicity in her crib, and got in bed with Liz, while Kyle carried Ava to the other bedroom down the hall.
Liz's disstressed body broke Max's heart. He carefully wrapped his arms around her, needing to feel her, but not wanting to cause her pain.
I'm off to bed, but I just finished this part and wanted to get it up. 11 B will be about Liz again, and Max trying to take care of a sick Felicity and an emotinally exhausted Liz. I'm not sure if I'll be able to post tomorrow, and if I can't, have a great 2 weeks while I'm gone, and I'll post as soon as I get home!

I come bearing an update!
Max woke up early the next morning to bring Felicity downstairs before she started to cry. She was still feverish, so Max bathed her in cool water. Breakfast was on the stove, and he was trying to give the baby her bottle, when Liz came downstairs in her robe.
"Max, I'm really sorry about last night. I should have gotten up to help you and not made things worse. I don't know why I'm like this."
"Shh..we're going to figure it all out once Felicity gets better."
Liz flinched as the bathroom door slammed, and Ava walked into the kitched, looking pretty pissed. She tried to hide it, but Max knew right away.
"Morning Max. Liz, how are you?"
"I'm not really sure. Max, do you mind watching the baby while I take a shower. I'm really sorry."
"Stop apologizing baby, take as much time as you need. We'll be fine"
She gave him a greatful look, and went back upstairs. max finally had Liss eating, and Ava ws staring at her Cherrios.
"A, what's wrong?"
"Well, I was thinking about Jesse last night, and for some weird reason, I feel like I met him before that trial."
"I really doubt it, but I guess you could have. Is that all that's bothering you, because you seem too upset for just that"
"Yeah...no. Kyle and I have been fighting a lot again. He's been working to much lately! This morning, he left at 4:30 for practice! I can't take it!"
A week went by, and Felicity's flu went away. Liz on the other hand was still in terrible shape. It was Alex who finally suggested that she come in and talk to him. Max wasn't sure if it was such a good idea, but Liz was willing to do whatever it took to make herself better. The morning of the appointment, they bundled the baby, and Max sat with her in the waiting room, while Liz spoke to Alex. He gave her a reassuring nod and a hug, and she walked in.
"How are you feeling Liz?"
"Scared" She answered honestly.
He asked her a few of the basics, and then delved into her case.
"When you found out you were pregnant, what exactly happened?"
She breathed deeply. "I cried for a while, and then Jesse came home and I was planning on telling him. He was in a really good mood, and we ended up in bed, and I lost all my thoughts. The next morning, I told him, and he attacked me." Her brown eyes were filling with tears, but she pushed herself on. "I can still feel the impact of his fist over and over! I was so scared for my baby."
Alex was shocked that she was opening up so fast, even though he already knew most of her story. "And after that, you left Roswell?"
"No, I stayed in NY for two months, and I told Jesse that I had lost the baby. I had to save up some money so we could leave.." She exhaled. She hadn't even told Max that she stayed there for 2 months..he would have lost it!.
"Did he hurt you then?"
"Yes...he did. But the baby was safe, as long as I didn't let him touch my stomach. And I had to stay. We couldn't live on the streets."
Once the first, and most difficult visit was over, Liz saw Alex twice a week. Then, on December 2nd, he had a plan that would help her be over it forever.
Max was working, and Liz had left Felicity with Ava. When she stepped into the office, she knew something was different. She sat down, and Alex had no idea how she'd react.
"Are you ready to put this all behind you?" He asked, and she nodded. "Than I think...that you need to see Jesse in prison"
A/N: I'm so sorry it's short and crappy! I wrote it at like 1 am in a hotel on the beach in San Diego. This was after overcoming my fear of snakes, swimming all day, and helping with dinner, so I didn't expect it to be very good. Don't worry, next chapter is the visit, and you find out how Ava knew Jesse!

Liz's fingers trembled as she buttoned her coat. She was going to see Jesse...
He's behind bars. He's behind bars. He's behind bars. He can't hurt me. She repeated over and over in her head.
Max appeared behind Liz, and planted a soft kiss on her neck.
"Don't worry" He whispered. "I'll be there with you."
After Liz's freak-out in Alex's office, he had managed to explain himself. Facing Jesse would help her over come her fear and grief over him, and brining Max and the baby would show Jesse just what he was missing.
"I know, thank you"
The wrapped up Felicity and carried her out to the care. She smiled up at Max as he buckled her in, and Liz couldn't help but grin at the two of them. She'd never think of Max as any less than Felicity's real father.
They drove for two hours, and when Liz could see the prison, she visibly tensed. Max moved his hand to hers.
"He's in there Max! God damnitt! Why am I bringing Felicity in there, after he tried to kill her twice?"
"Jesse Ramirez is behind bars. He will never hurt either of you again. But if you want to turn around and go home, then I'll take you right now."
She contemplated for a minute, but realized that this was what she had to do. Liz knew that if she didn't see Jesse now, she'd be terrified for the rest of her life.
"No, I want to go"
They parked the car, and Max held onto Liz's hand, and help the baby in his other arm. He explained everything to the officer, and they were led to his cell. Liz was trembling when she saw him, and Max gave her hand a tight squeeze.
"Well if it isn't little Bethy and her asshole lawyer."
Max was pissed, but Liz pushed him back.
"I need to do this alone, stay with Liss"
He opened his mouth to protest, but Liz shook her head and stepped closer to the cell.
"Actually Jesse, he's my fiance now, and that baby in his arms is the child you tried to kill. Max and my beautiful daughter, Felicity"
"His fucking daughter?"
"Yes, he's her father, and Max loved her like you never would."
"You're right, I'd never love her, because she was a fucking mistake!"
"DOn't you ever call her that!!!"
"She is, and soon Maxi will realize his mistake it being with a slut like you! And then you'll be out on the street where you fucking belong. So shut up bitch!"
Max couldn't contain himself anymore. He pulled Liz back towards him, and put Felicity in her arms. He couldn't sit back and let him talk to Liz like that.
"Let me deal with this" he said through clenched teeth.
Liz just nodded through her tears, and let Max do whatever he wanted.
"Ohh look at the night in shining armor, here to save the day" Jesse mocked. "How cute. It's just like in college with that blonde whore"
College? What the fuck is he talking about? I just met this fucking shithead in September. And what blonde whore. Oh shit! Ava! She was right, she did know Jesse! He was that dick who was harassing her one night, trying to get her up to his room!
He didn't even think about what he was doing, this guy had tried to hurt Ava, and worst of all, he hurt Liz! He slammed his fist between the bars and connected with Jesse's nose. Blood spurted over the floor, and the other prisoners watched in shock.
"FUCKING SHIT!" Jesse screamed.
One of the guards rushed over, and saw what had happened. They quickly cuffed Max, and read him his rights. Liz couldn't believe what she was seeing! He had just done that to Jesse, just to protect her. Then she realized that Max was beign cuffed, and she started to cry. She held tightly to the baby, and followed them into the other room, where they were putting Max into a cell.
An hour later, Liz had been cleared to speak to Max. She held a sleeping Felicity, and a cop led her into the cell, and locked the door behind her. Max had his head down, embarrased to even look at Liz.
"Max...it's okay. Thank you for protecting me"
"I just punched a guy in prison! What the hell is my problem?"
"Baby, please don't feel guilty over this. This is my fault."
"No, let's just stop now. I want you to call Ava, get her to come take you and Felicity home."
"Oh hell no Max! I'm not leaving you here alone. I'll call Ava, but I am staying here with you!"
Max nodded, knowing she wouldn't back down.
"I have to tell you something about Jesse. Back in college, Ava and I went to this frat party one night, and Jesse was there, totally toasted. So he starts hitting on Ava, and he was all over her. So then he's trying to get her up to his room, and she was so pissed off. He was like trying to drag her upstairs, and finally I came and punched him. He went down pretty fast. I guess that's why I hit him again. I didn't like him for hurting Ava, and I hate him for hurting you!"
A/N: Sorry if it was kinda crappy...I thought it was going to be better. I think I'm going to do the next chapter as Christmas. Ya know, Christmas season just kicked off in NY So I'm gonna get a little festive in August LOL

A/N: I was just wondering if any of you knew how to make fan-art, and could make me a cover for this fic. I'm not very artistic, and I'm not exactly a computer whiz, so I can't do it ANd once again, I thank you all for the feedback, you keep me writing!
After Max was arrested, he was shocked at how much Liz had changed. She was the one who fought Max's way out of jail, and that was the first time he'd ever seen her as a lawyer. Without even talking about how she was feeling, Max knew that Liz was feeling much better.
It was less than a week until Christmas now, and nothing could be more perfect for them. Liz had quit her job at the Crashdown, and was starting at the law firm with Max after the New Year. The big house was full of Christmas cheer, and nothing could spoil it.
On December 21st, the first day of winter, and the shortest day of the year, Max and Liz sat in front of the fire, drinking eggnog, and enjoying life. Then, the phone rang.
Liz reached over an picked it up, expecting it to be one of her friends, but much to her surprise, it was a voice she hadn't heard in six years.
"Hello is Elizabeth there?"
"Yes, this is she"
"Oh..um" Liz could hear the voice muttering curses on the other end. "This is your mother"
She nearly jumped out of the seat, she hadn't spoken to her mom since she graduated college. Mrs. Parker wanted Liz to forget about Law School, and settle down with a guy. Some choice words were exchanged, and they hadn't spoken since.
"How did you find me here?"
"I wanted to see you, you're my daughter. So, I spent 4 months trying to find you, and then I read an article in the paper back in September about this Jesse guy being arrested for abusing you."
"Oh.." She was clueless on what to say. "Where are you right now mom?"
"Santa Fe Airport"
Oh yeah, this was classic! She's in New Mexico. Jesus Christ!
"Alright...I guess. I guess I'll come and pick you up. Just wait there alright?"
She hung up without another word, and Max was staring at her.
"I thought you said your mother died when you were 15"
"Just get the baby and I'll explain in the car" She said, and they carried the sleeping baby into the car.
It was long after midnight when they started the drive to Santa Fe, and Liz told Max about everything.
"My dad was a lawyer, and I was a Daddy's Girl if there ever was one. God, I loved him so much. But he got caught up in the fast-paced world of law, and ended up ODing when I was 15. After he died, it was just my mother and I, and we fought a lot. She had boyfriends, and I hated all of them. When I was in college, we started to get along again. Thenm I graduated and she found out that I was going to Law School. She was so pissed, and told me that I was going to end up like my father, and I basically called her a fucking bitch, and we haven't spoken since then. Since then, I've told people that my parents were killed in a car crash..it was just easier for me."
"My God Liz, I'm sorry. I had no idea"
"It's alright...she says she wants to see me now. This is so like her to call me from Santa Fe. I've had no time to prepare. She knows nothing about me. All she knows is that I was abused by Jesse. None of the papers said anything about Felicity. It's just insane."
"Shh...we'll take care of it all" Max said, and squeezed her hand.
They arrived at the airport, and Liz saw her mother sitting on one of the benches. Max was shocked at how different she was from Liz. She was tall, with short blonde hair and dark green eyes. They walked to her mother, and Liz didn't move to hug her. Then, out of nowhere, Mrs. Parker wrapped her arms around Liz, capturing her in a hug. When both women regained composure, Liz introduced Max.
"This is my fiance, Max Evans, and this is our baby girl Felicity."
"Very nice to meet you Max" She said, and then peered into his arms. Her heart melted when she saw the baby.
"Oh...Elizabeth, she's beautiful"
Liz just nodded, and took the baby from Max. Max helped Mrs. Parker get her bags into the car, and Liz gave the front seat to her mother, while she sat in the back with Felicity. She was quiet on the way home, trying to decide if she was still angry at her mother. When they got back to the house, Max showed Mrs. Parker the guest room, and then went to bed with Liz. She quickly wrapped her arms around him for security, and he looked deep into her eyes.
"You're upset" he stated. "You've hardly said two words all night"
"I don't like how she's just walked back into my life Max. She's missed six years. The birth of my first child, my graduation from law school...she can never get those years back"
"I know Liz. But maybe you should give her a chance. She's making an effort, I can see it."
"I'll try" She agreed.
It was almost five in the morning when they got to sleep, and it was ten o'clock when Felicity started to cry. Max got out of bed and took care of her, telling Liz to rest. When she finally did get up, Max, Felicity, and Nancy Parker were at the kitchen table eating cereal.
"Morning" Liz said sleepily, and sat beside Max.
"Elizabeth, do you think maybe you and I can have lunch together today? I'd really like to talk to you."
"Well...if Max could watch Felicity, then I'm sure it would be fine"
Max nodded that he could, and Liz looked almost resigned. Part of her had hoped that Max was busy, so she wouldn't have to be alone with her mother, but she knew she had to do it. And then, the phone rang again. This time, Max answered it.
"Hi Max, it's Ava"
"Hey..what's going on."
"Well...I just called to tell you that my parents have decided to come for Christmas, and they haven't heard about Liz yet"
"Oh shit" He whispered. "I can't believe I didn't tell them. Alright...I'll figure out how to tell them. I gotta go"
Liz looked at Max, wondering what had just happened.
"Um..Liz. That was Ava, and the Hardings are coming for Christmas. She just informed me that neither of us has told them about you." Liz looked as if she was shooting daggers from her eyes. Max's first wifes parents...great. He tried to lighten the mood by joking with her. "Christmas just keeps getting more and more interesting, doesn't it?"
Somehow, she didn't find it very funny.

A/N: Big thanks to Saira for helping me come up with ideas for Tess and Ava's parents reaction to Liz! That really helped me get past my writers block! Narly, Lattegirl, jeremiah, roswellluver, PSW2001, AvengingAngel, AngelBabe, Shorty, Leigh, Apathygirl, limegreenli, clueless, LEL, Shama, JaneLane, marteloise, NATEVANS, the better twin, ILYMEFOREVER, talena, FreeFall, Pixie, fireyangel, Sonia, mpls muse, and Starlight, I just wanted to thank you all for giving me feedback on this fic! It really, seriously, keeps me writing!
So Liz's lunch with her mother went fine, and the two of them had managed to move past what happened six years ago. Now, it was Christmas Eve, and Liz was completley frantic. They were having a Christmas party, and Ava was coming with her parents. The house couldn't get clean enough for Liz. She spent 2 hours scrubbing the bathroom, and she was in tears when Max came in.
"Lizzie, what's the matter"
"I don't want to meet the Hardings Max, they're going to hate me."
"Baby, no one can hate you. I mean look at you, you're perfect. Just relax, everything will be okay"
At 6:45, Liz was as ready as she'd ever be. She dressed in a dark green dress, and her hair fell in curls. She cradled Felicity, who wore a red velvet dress. She was shaking, but trying to stay calm, so not not make a fool of herself. Max came down the stairs in his black tuxedo, and smiled, wathcing Liz.
"Okay, are you ready?"
She nodded, and Max put his arm around her. The doorbell rang, and they walked together to answer it.
It was Alex and Isabel, with an older couple in tow. Max looked at his sister in shock.
"I've been trying to call you for three hours Max! Your phone was busy."
"Well...hi mom, hi dad" He said, and hugged them.
Liz couldn't believe what she was seeing. Now Max's parents were here too? Why was this all happening to her in a matter of days?
"Well you must be Liz" Diane Evans said to her. "And I'm guessing this little sweetheart is my granddaughter? It's so nice to finally meet you. Max does nothing but talk about you, whenever I speak with him. I'm Diane."
Liz smiled. Maybe Max's parents weren't so bad. Diane hugged her, and Liz felt safe.
"Would you like to hold the baby?"
Liz handed the baby to Diane, and greeted Max's father.
"Hi Mr. Evans, I'm really glad you came."
"Please Liz, it's Phil. You're going to be our daughter in a few months."
She smiled, and Max wrapped his arms around her. People started coming in, and a lot of them were unfamiliar to Liz. Then, she saw Ava and Kyle come in and her body froze. As soon as the Hardings walked in, Mrs. Hardings eyes went to Liz, who was in Max's arms. She watched them narrow, as she walked over to Max and Liz.
"Hello Max" She said. Max gently let go of Liz, and gave Trish Harding a hug.
"Hi Trisha. Merry Christmas"
"You too" David came over to them, and Max shook his hand.
"Hey young man. How's everything going for you?"
"Very well, thanks. I-"
"Maxwell" Trisha interrupted in her high pitched voice. "Who may I ask are the parents of that beautiful baby in your mother's arms?"
Liz's mouth went dry. Was Max going to say that it is her baby, and deny the adoption? Or was he going to tell the truth, and see what she would say.
"Well...There's really a lot I have to tell you about Felicity. You see, this is Liz." He stated calmly. "She and I are going to be married this spring, and Felicity is our daughter."
Liz saw both faces drop in horror.
"Babies take nine months Max." Mrs. Harding seethed. "Tessa died in April. It's only December. That means that you cheated on my daughter with this whore!"
Liz cringed, and she could see the people staring from around the room. Her mind flashed back to Jesse, he was the only other person who had ever called her a whore.
Ava put her hand on Trish's arm. "Mother, give Max a chance to explain"
"Ava, shut it. You knew about this all a long, and you let it go on? She was your sister!"
"I watched you cry the day she died!" Dave fumed. "What an act! You must have gotten with this Lizzie girl when you found out that Tess was dying! I can't believe I'm seeing this!"
"Please...will one of you just listen to me?"
"I'm embarrased to be seen with you! How can I listen to anything you have to say. What does this girl have going for her? She was impregnanted by a married man, and she has a bastard child!"
Liz wanted to curl up somewhere and die. The entire room was staring at her, and for all these people knew, Trisha Harding was right.
"Mother, Daddy!" Ava screamed "Do you not hear yourselves? You walk into Max's home, and you start hurling insults at his fiance. You have no idea what you're talking about! Liz moved to Roswell in May, and she was pregnant. She and Max fell in love, and he adopted Felicity. So why don't you quit it with your God damned attitude and give this girl a chance? You have no idea of half the shit she's been through. She doesn't live the wonderful little life that the two of you live, so why don't you get your noses out of the air and take some time to look at the real world! And while your at it, look at yourselves. Mother, you're a fake, rich bitch, and daddy, you're so arrogant and controlling, you don't even realize it!" With that, she threw her hands up in the air, and ran into the kitchen.
"David lets go!" Trisha hissed, and pulled him out the door.
The entire room was in chaos, and the party was completley ruined. Tears were running down Liz's cheeks, and Kyle had run into the kitchen to take care of Ava. Most people began to leave, as they saw what was going on, and Diane Evans tried to wish them well. Once almost everything had calmed down, Max and Liz curled in the recliner, Nancy rocked with the baby in the rocker, Phil and Diane sat on the couch, Alex and Isabel lay on the carpet, and Kyle and Ava were on the love seat. No one felt like dealing with Christmas anymore...everything had been ruined.
"Ava..I just wanted to say thank you" Liz said softly.
"Don't mention it. They really had that coming."
Michael and Maria burst into the room.
"I'm so sorry we're late! Some people have the inability-" She stopped, noticing the state of everyone in the room, and the lack of people. "Whoa...what did we miss?"
After several mugs of hot chocolate, Michael and Maria knew the story, and everyone was pretty exhausted. No one was really up for driving, and each managed to find various places to sleep.
Liz and Max brought Felicity up to bed, and as Liz slid into her sweats, she saw Max watching her.
"You're so beautiful" He said.
"Max, I'm not. I'm awful, and right now I feel like complete shit. I didn't even realize...with the baby and everything. I feel so bad about it. The party was ruined, and poor Ava!"
He pulled her to him, and tilted her head up to look in his eyes. "None of this is your fault. Trish Harding never really liked me anyway, and what Ava said wasn't because of you. She's been wanting to get all of that out for years. So promise me, you'll stop feeling guilty."
She tried to smile. "Fine, I will"
The two of them crawled into bed, just after the clock struck midnight.
"Merry Christmas baby, the first of many" Max whispered, and kissed her.
"You too Max. And let's hope next Christmas doesn't end up like this one."
"Agreed, no more psychotic in laws, and maybe Michael and Maria will actually get here on time" he joked.

A/N: Thanks for the feedback guys! I want to thank Space Coyote on Fan Forum for the cover. I absolutley love it! I showed my sister it before, and she thought it was very fitting for this fic! I decided that in this part, I'm gonna have Liz be the strong one in the relationship, and Max be the one falling apart. Happy reading!
With Christmas behind them, and the New Year just beginning, Max and Liz were happier than ever. Every morning, they'd get up, and run like crazy to get ready for work, and then with the office all to themselves, they kept Felicity with them.
One afternoon, Max had run out to get lunch for the two of them, when the phone rang.
"Evans Law Firm, Liz Parker speaking. How may I help you?"
"Hello, is Mr. Evans there please?"
"I'm sorry, he's stepped out of the office for a moment. Can I take a message?"
"This is Orlando Memorial Hospital, we're calling in regards to his parents"
Liz began to panic. Max's parents?
"I'm sorry, what do you mean?"
"That information is confidential Miss Parker, please have Max call as soon as he gets in"
She was clueless...She tried to call his cell phone, and she could hear it ringing on his desk
"GOD DAMNITT MAX!" She screamed, and Felicity began to scream.
Liz bent down and picked her up, rocking her back and forth. Twenty minutes later, Max walked in the door, and Liz ran to him.
"Call the hospital right now Max! In Orlando. Don't ask, just call"
Max didn't know what to do. He picked up the phone, and hit the return call button.
"Hello, this is Max Evans. I recieved a call from you earlier."
"Yes Mr. Evans. We've been expecting you. I'm sorry to inform you this, but we have both of your parents here, in pretty poor condition. There was an accident."
"I'll be there on the next flight" He said, and hung up the phone.
Two hours later, Max, Liz, Alex and Isabel were in the airport waiting for their flight to Orlando. Isabel was hysterical, and Alex kept trying to comfort her. Max, on the other hand wouldn't speak. He was too upset to say anything, even to Liz. She sat beside him, stroking his neck with her thumb, letting him know that she'd be there for him when he needed it. She watched as a tears began to fall from his beautiful eyes, and it crushed her.
"Flight 507 to Orlando now boarding" A voice boomed over the PA.
"That's our flight" Liz said softly, and helped Max stand up. They had left the baby with Kyle and Ava, so it would be easier for them to deal with traveling.
The four of them boarded, and Liz watched Isabel cuddle up to Alex, trying to find her security. Max was just staring at the seat. He was no longer in control of the situation, and it scared him.
"I'm here for you Max" she whispered, trying to break the shell he formed around himself.
She heard him choke out a sob. "I'm so scared" He cried, buring his head in his hands. "I haven't been this scared since, since-"
He didn't need to go on, Liz knew that he meant the day he found her on the Crashdown floor. She put his hand on his, and he wrapped him arms around her.
"I can't lose them Liz...I can't."
"Shh...everything is going to be okay" She soothed.
When they arrived in Florida, it was pitch black, and the heat was overbearing. Alex quickly hailed a cab, and they got right to the hospital. When they got to the accident ward, a nurse turned them away, telling them that it was 2 in the morning, and visiting hours were long over. Saddend, they checked into a hotel, and Alex and Isabel had fallen asleep almost immediatley.
Liz had her arms around Max, wanting nothing more than to take away all his pain, like he had done for her so many times. She knew what it was like to lose a parent, and how scary it was, not knowing if you were going to lose them or not. She listened to Max's heart beating, until she heard his breathing slow, then she fell asleep herself.
They were awake at 8 am, drinking coffee in the cafeteria of the hospital, waiting for visiting hours to begin.
"I'm scared to see them" Isabel said, almost inaudibly
No one responded. The clock slowly turned to 9 am, and Max nearly knocked over the table jumping up to see his mom and dad.
Isabel motioned for Max to go first.
"Go ahead Max" Liz coached, but he wouldn't let go of her hand.
"Not without you"
She nodded, and followed him into the room. He gasped when he saw his parents, Diane was sleeping, her head bandaged, and it was obvious that a lot of her hair was gone. Phil's eyes were blank, but he was awake. His chest was bandaged, and his arm in a sling.
Phillip didn't respond, but his eyes changed, letting Max know that he was aware of what was going on. Without thinking, Max threw his arms around his father, needing to feel if he was alive.
He spent a half an hour with them, and finally, Liz brought him out of the room in tears.
"They're going to be alright Max, I promise"
"My mom...I remember as a kid, I always used to think that my mother was an angel. That she would always be there. Now I'm so scared. And dad, he was my hero. My protector." He didn't say anymore, he collapsed into Liz's arms, sobbing.

Author's Note~Hey everyone...I feel awful, but I just haven't had the time to update. I'm going back to school in 6 days, and you all know how it is right before school starts. Hopefully I'll be able to update once I get into a normal schedule...depending on how much I have to do. My classes are insane this year, and I've got so much extracurricular stuff going on. But I swear, I'll try!
