Part 1

Liz stared out of the car at the corny sign, which flashed vigorously above the doors of the café her grandparents had owned. “We came all the way from London just to see this dump? Who in their right mind would want to buy this anyway?” she asked her parents.

“Well, no-one actually, its not for sale”

“Then what on earth are we doing here?”

“Were um… moving in,” Liz stared at her father in disbelief.

“You what? Your joking right?” her father shook his head, waiting for the teenage tantrum to erupt.

Liz got out of the car, marched over to the café doors and peered inside. “But its… its… sooo tacky! I can’t believe you didn’t even tell me we were moving, I’ll have to let everyone back home know as soon as we get back”

“Liz, hunny…”

“You only say that when you’ve got something to say that I’m not going to like. So don’t you dare ‘Liz hunny’ me, I don’t wanna hear it.” she yelled and stormed off.

Jeff opened the door and got out to go after her, but his wife stopped him, “just let her go, she needs to calm herself down. She’ll be back when she’s ready.” Instead he went over to the café and pushed open it doors, waited for Nancy to follow him and went inside.

A blonde waitress, about Liz’s age he decided, was stood behind the counter arguing with one of the customers, “…I am not a dog, I don’t fetch; if you want it you’ll have to go get it yourself because we don’t sell it here, I told you that earlier…”

“Great customer service you have there” Jeff said, leaning on the counter next to her.

“Look its one of the tourist bunch, if you don’t show them who’s boss they’ll give you hell. You look like you’re new round here, welcome to Roswell New Mexico, home of the little green men. Rumour has it that several of the local inhabitants are a little green around the gills…” she said, starting the speech that she, and all the other waitresses, had been instructed perform to new tourists.

“Actually your right, we are new to the area,” Jeff said motioning to Nancy to join him. “But we’re not tourists”

“Oh?”

“We’re the new owners of this place, it used to be my mothers. So that makes me your new boss.”

Maria blushed, “oh. My names Maria DeLuca, sorry about all that just now, its just that we’re a bit short staffed.”

“Our daughter, Liz, will be starting work once we’ve settled in, so that should take a bit of pressure off. What time do you finish your shift?”

Maria looked at her watch, “wow; now. I didn’t realise it was so late. I’ll see you tomorrow Mr…”

“Parker”

“…Mr Parker. Hey, space boy!” she called into the kitchen as she took off her apron, “I’ll see you tonight. The tourists like to think they’ve met an alien, that’s why we call him space boy” she added quietly as she left.

Liz walked down the road kicking the loose stones angrily. As she reached the corner a blonde came the other way and the pair collided. Liz noticed the uniform and began to laugh, “You work in that tacky café right? How can you wear that?”

“I work in the Crashdown yes”

“So you admit it’s tacky?”

“Hell yeah! But the tourists love it… and this uniform; it has its advantages” she said winking.

“My dad owns the place, he’s draggin’ us over here from London. As for the uniform, I’ll take your word for it”

“You must be Liz then, hi, I’m Maria. You’ll be able to get the full benefit of the outfit when you start working there”

“Working in the café? No way!”

“That’s what I was told,” Liz groaned.
“Hey you should come to our house tonight. My mom and Valenti are on their honeymoon, so Kyle and I have a party planned while we have the place to ourselves. It’ll give you a chance to get to know people”

“Yeah, sounds good but I don’t have anything to wear, most of our stuff is still over in England. Who’s Valenti?”

“He’s the sheriff, I still can’t believe she actually married him. Don’t worry about the clothes you can borrow some of mine.” Liz followed Maria as she began to head back to her house.

By ten o’clock Maria and Liz were both ready and most of the student population appeared to be gathered. Maria insisted on draggin her round the room and introducing everyone to her, “this is my step brother Kyle, Alex is that one over there, that’s Isobel and Tess, they were really good friends until Tess cheated on Isobel’s brother. You have to see him! He should be here soon” Maria spun round as she felt a tap on her shoulder. “And this is Michael”

“The names Guerin, Michael Guerin. Licence to thrill” he said, winking. “And this is Maxwell” Max stood beside him.

“Just Max will do,” he said grinning. He shook Liz’s hand as his eyes roamed her body.

Maria leaned over and whispered in her ear, “Careful Chica, you’re starting to catch flies”

Liz laughed nervously, realizing that her eyes had wandered and she’d spent the last few minutes staring at the bulge in his trousers. Kyle wandered by with some drinks and Maria took them off him, she passed a bottle to Liz, “here have this”.

Liz took a mouthful and saw that Max was still staring at her. “You want to go somewhere and talk?” he asked her. Something about the way he said it sent a shiver through her.

“Yeah, I’d love to” she said and followed him down the hall and into a backroom.

Liz sat on the bed, “words are over-rated though”

Max nodded, “I agree. So how about we play show and tell?” he asked locking the door. “I’ll show, and you can tell” he added and begun to undo his zip…
