Chapter One:

New York City. Home of the Yankees, the Met, and me; Liz Parker. I’m 17, I’m brunette, and the most exciting thing about me is my tattoo of the Chinese symbol for strength. God, Nancy hates that tattoo.

Nancy Adams (formerly Parker) is my mother. We live together in this tiny townhouse on 23rd street. She divorced my dad Jeff a few years ago. She took me and left him in Roswell, New Mexico. Turns out he fell in love with Diane Evans. She’s a widower. Has two kids my age too.

Anyways, back to me. I’m not really what you would call the ‘ideal’ daughter. I go out all night with my boyfriend, I got piercings and a tattoo, I rarely go to school and I call my mom a bitch to her face. Ok so, I’m the worst daughter you could ever have. But what do you expect? My parents divorced and my mom took me across the country to a city where most 12 years old aren’t even virgins! So yeah, being in New York led me to grow up pretty fast. I’m not ashamed of being experienced. It just makes me less vulnerable.

My friends are pretty…unique. Their what you would call the ‘bad element’ I guess. Yeah we party, get drunk and stoned, but we have fun! Were only 17 for fucks sake. There’s Jaicee, my best friend. She’s a blast. We love to get high together. And Tobey, BEST supplier a girl good have! Ava, a bit of a slut, but aren’t we all? And then there’s Fruit Loops. No need to explain what he’s like.

And Zan. Oh god Zan. He’s my boyfriend. And I say that with EXTREME pride. He has dark hair, the most piercing eyes, and his body…Holy fuck…he’s like an Adonis. Tattoos, piercings, leather…Typical yummy bad boy.

That’s about it with me. I’m boring. I’m really boring. I hang out all day and Tobey’s apartment and get high. Go out at night, party, have sex with Zan, party, sex with Zan, home, sleep. Wake up, do it all again.

You know, realizing how fucked up one’s life is, is really depressing. I need crack.

Friday, 10:30 PM. Liz’s House

Liz sat on her unmade bed contemplating what she was going to do that night. As far as she had heard, there were no good parties going on. She felt the energy running through her body. She needed to do something.

Liz reached for her phone and dialled a familiar number, Zan’s. It rang, and rang, and rang. No luck there.

She slammed the phone down and let out a frustrated scream. Annoyed, Liz began to search under her mattress for her stash. All she had left was one joint.

“Better then nothing,” She said to herself and lit up.

Liz didn’t bother locking the door. Nancy knew damn well of Liz’s activities, but had no way to stop. In fact, she didn’t even try.

“Liz!” Came Nancy’s voice from down the hall. She let herself into her daughter’s room.

“What?” Said a nearly stoned Liz.

“Liz, what are you doing with those drugs?” Nancy said sternly.

“I’m smoking them. Want a puff?” Liz offered.

Nancy’s jaw dropped. “Elizabeth, get rid of that right now!”

“No way! This is quality shit!” Liz said equally shocked. Throw away a good joint? Sure there buddy.

“Fine, do what you want.” And with that Nancy left the room.

“Damn straight!” Liz yelled after her. She laughed at her own use of words so hard she tumbled off the bed.

“Ow,” She mumbled to herself. Liz blew at the hair that had fallen across her face, and came face to face with her phone that had fallen on the floor with her.

It rang, and Liz eagerly answered it. “Hello!!”

“Hey Boo, it’s Jaicee.”

“Hey girl, what’s up?”

“Well, I found us a party.”

Liz’s eyes lit up. Thank god! “Where?”

“The warehouse district.”

“Why in fuck’s name would WE go to a party at the district?”

“Look, Lizzy, I didn’t wanna tell you this but…”

Liz rolled her eyes. Jaicee, the drama queen. “Just tell me!”

“Fruit Loops called me and said Zan was at the District party. And I said why the fuck would he be there? And Fruit Loops said he wasn’t alone.”

Liz’s heart sank. “Who the fuck is he with then?”

“He was with Ava. And it ain’t just dancing with her, or getting looped with her. He’s hooking up with her, Liz.” Jaicee finished.

“That ain’t possible. Zan is mine. He always has been! Are you telling me that bitch is trying to fuck him?!?” Liz said angrily.

“Liz, calm down alright? Look, for all we know, Fruit Loops was laced when we called me! He was at the party after all.” She reasoned.

Liz took a breath. “Alright, but I’m still gonna go down there. You coming with?”

“Of course. I’ll be at your place in 30.”

Liz hung up and stared at her face in the mirror. She grabbed the chemistry book that was sitting on her dresser and threw it at the mirror, shattering it into pieces. She sunk to the bottom of the wall, crying. Zan was the only thing holding her together.

Liz, suck it up. She demanded of herself. She stood up straight and opened her closet door. She grabbed black leather pants and a way too tight black tank top.

Liz took a quick shower before getting changed.

Friday, 11:30 PM. Jaicee’s car

Liz and Jaicee sat in silence in the car. Jaicee would glace over at Liz once in awhile and saw only a vacant look on her face. She was all about business now.

“Um, do you want a smoke?” Jaicee offered, holding up her package of cigarettes.

Liz nodded with a small smile and took a cigarette. She lit it, and it visibly relaxed her. Liz reached over to the radio and turned it on. Linkin Park’s ‘In The End’ came on.

“How fitting.” Liz said with a sarcastic smile before turning up the volume.

Before the ride was over, Liz finished five more cigarettes, and was more hyped up on Linkin Park then ever. She was ready to confront Zan.

Saturday, 12:15 AM. The Warehouse Party

The whole warehouse was swarming with sweaty couples making out. Some were even having sex in the corners. Liz took another swig of her beer, still looking for Zan and Ava.

“Hey sexy,” Said a voice behind her.

Liz turned to see some freshman boy, who was obviously high. She turned her back to him, but he didn’t want to give up.

“What do you say we go out back and lit up?” He said displaying a couple of joints.

Oh how she needed those joints…She took one and sniffed. Not bad, not Tobey quality, but decent.

Liz grabbed the other one. “Thanks sweetie.” She kissed his cheek.

He squealed, reminiscent of a girl at a slumber party, and ran off to find his friends most likely, totally forgetting his drugs.

Liz lit the first joint, closing her eyes in ecstasy as she inhaled. She washed it down with the remainder of her beer.

Sighing at the empty bottle, Liz headed to the table with the booze. As she unscrewed the lid of her beer, she gasped.

10 feet away was Zan and Ava involved in a heavy make out session.

Liz dropped her beer and joint and stomped over the couple. She grabbed Ava’s arm and flung her away.

“Hey!” Ava said in annoyance before realizing it was Liz. She then cowered behind Zan.

“Liz, hey!” Zan said with a smile.

“What the FUCK are you doing?!?” Before Zan could answer Liz took her best swing at him. Her fist came in contact with his nose, making a horrible cracking sound.

“Bitch!” He yelled, slapping her.

“Get your hands off of her!” Fruit Loops said pushing Zan away from her.

“Stay out of this, man.” Zan said keeping his eyes on Liz.

Liz threw herself on him, taking him to the ground. Ava screamed at Liz as she threw punches at him and bit him.

Ava jumped on Liz’s back. “Get off of him!”

Fruit Loops jumped in and grabbed Ava, holding her off of Liz.

“You slut!” Zan yelled, punching Liz’s cheek.

Liz screamed in pain, holding her cheek.

“Bitch,” Zan muttered, picking her up and throwing her against the wall.

“Liz!” Fruit Loops yelled trying to help her, but one of Zan’s goons had grabbed him.

“I love you so much, Lizzy.” Zan said.

Liz spit in his face. “The feeling’s not mutual.”

Zan smirked at her, bashing her against the wall one last time before letting her fall to the ground. He walked off, Ava following him.

Jaicee pushed her way to Liz, bending down to check her out. “You okay?” She asked.

Liz nodded weakly. “I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll get some bandages.” Fruit Loops said, taking off.

Jaicee helped Liz sit on an old carton as Fruit Loops returned with some makeshift bandages and water.

“This might sting,” He said as he began to clean the gash on her cheek.

Liz winced in pain. And held her finger up in waiting. She took the second joint she had out of her pocket and had Jaicee light it as Fruit Loops continued to clean.

“Everybody stay where you are. This is the NYPD.” Said a booming voice.

The whole warehouse began to clear out as the cops began to try to arrest people.

“Oh shit,” Jaicee said trying to help Liz up.

“I knew I always hated district parties…” Liz said stumbling.

“Come on girls!” Fruit Loops said by the exit door.

The two began running towards the door as two policemen spotted the joint in Liz’s mouth.

“Fuck!” Liz shouted.

Liz fell to the ground. “Just go!” Liz shouted to her friends.

Jaicee ran back and quickly grabbed the joint from Liz, the last thing she needed was drug possession charges. Without evidence, they had no case.

Liz gave no struggle as the two officers rushed to Liz, pulling her hands behind her back, cuffing them.

Saturday, 2:30 AM. New York Police Department, 38th division

Liz sat in a jail cell, legs dangling over the edge of her bunk, her head in her hands.

“Elizabeth Parker.” Came a voice from the cell exit.

Liz hopped down, hoping she could leave now.

“Come with me.” The guard said.

She was brought to an interrogation room and told to sit down. She was offered water, which Liz declined.

An officer soon entered the room with a file.

“Elizabeth Parker,” He began. “Says here you were at party in the warehouse district.”

Liz nodded as confirmation.

“Where’d you get those cuts and bruises? They look pretty fresh.”

“Domestic quarrel.” She stated simply.

“Parents?” The officer asked.

“Ex boyfriend.” She clarified.

“Do you want to press charges against him?” The detective asked gently.

Liz shook her head. “I want to move on.”

“Ok, fair enough.” The detective shuffled through his papers.

Liz gave the papers a curious look.

“So you were brought in for trespassing on privately owned property and drug use. Lucky for you, no drug possession charges since your friend took that joint you had before the cops could snag it.” He gave her a small smile, and Liz returned it.

“Can I just go home please? I mean you can’t really keep me here can you?”

“Yes, were releasing you. We certainly can’t hold you for trespassing since we have murders to deal with, and with drug possession charges to be accounted for, your free to go.”

“Thanks.” Liz said standing.

“We’ll have to call your mother though.”

Liz sat back down. “Is that really necessary? I mean I’m almost 18 and all and since the charges weren’t serious I was thinking maybe you could just let me leave?”

The detective smiled. “Sorry, I can’t do that. But I promise to tell your mother that I think you were punished enough tonight just being in that cell.”

“Great.” She slumped down with a heavy sigh.

Saturday, 4:00 AM. Liz’s house.

“This is it, Liz.” Nancy said as the two settled at the kitchen table for a long talk.

“Mom, come on, I was only charged with trespassing! It’s no big deal!” Liz said with a wave of her hand.

“You were also charged with drug use! You were arrested, Liz! ARRESTED! And what happened to your face???”

“I fell.” Liz lied.

“I don’t believe you, but I’ll leave it alone for now.”

“Gee, thanks.” Liz said sarcastically.

“Elizabeth, this is no time to be rude with me. I am extremely upset with you! God, Liz, can’t you even try?”

“Why should I?!? You screwed both our lives up the day you left Roswell!”

Nancy’s face fell.

“I’m sorry.” Liz mumbled.

“No your right.” Nancy said.

“I am?” Liz replied.

“I shouldn’t have uprooted you, and taken you to New York City of all places. I just wanted everything to be different for us. I wanted things to be good.” Nancy said softly, tucking a piece of her daughter’s chocolate colored hair behind her ear.

Liz wince as Nancy’s hand brushed against a gash on her cheek.

“Did Zan do this?” Nancy asked, appalled.

Liz said nothing.

Nancy sighed heavily. “I want what’s best for you Honey Bear, you know that. And I think we both know that New York is not the place for you to have what’s best. The drinking, the drugs and the sex need to stop. There going to stop.”

Liz rolled her eyes.

“This morning I am going to call your father and arrange for you to move back to Roswell.”

Liz looked up shocked. “What? No Mom, I can’t move to Roswell! What about my friends?!? I promise I’ll do better. Look, you just, you can’t do this to me. YOU CAN’T!” Liz screamed.

“It’s decided. This is not the right place for you. I can’t give you what you need. You need a stable family environment. I love you, and if sending you to live with your father can give you that, then so be it.”

“A stable family environment?!? Living with my estranged father his new wife and her two kids?!? You call THAT stable?”

“Liz, please…”

“No! God, I knew you hated me, hated me for screwing up your life, but I never thought you would just ship me off to that bastard.” Liz stated angrily. She stomped off to her room, and cried herself to sleep.

Next stop: Roswell, New Mexico.

Chapter Two:

Saturday, 10:15 AM. Liz’s House

Nancy looked in on her sleeping daughter’s bedroom. “I’m sorry, Lizzy.” She whispered.

She walked back to the kitchen, and picked up the telephone, looked at the number in her address book and dialled. It rang three times before a female answered.

“Hello?”

Nancy froze. She knew that voice. It was Diane.

“Hello Diane, it’s Nancy Adams.”

“Oh, Nancy. How may I help you?” She said struggling to keep her voice neutral.

“I need to talk to Jeff.”

“Regarding?” Diane asked.

“Our daughter.” Nancy replied coldly.

Diane sighed, frustrated with her husband’s ex wife. “Alright, I’ll get him. He’s just out back playing some basketball with Max and Isabel.”

“Jeff doesn’t play any sports.” Nancy seethed.

Diane gave a small pitiful laugh before going to get Jeff.

“That’s a foul!” Diane heard Isabel shout.

She smiled watching her husband and her two children playing together. Ever since Diane had married Jeff six years ago, Max and Isabel had automatically taken to him. They had missed their father Phillip desperately after he passed away, but Jeff was able to help heal their hearts. He was a wonderful father and husband, and Diane could never understand how Nancy could give him up.

Jeff then spotted her. “Hey Honey! Want to play?”

Diane shook her head. “Actually no, Jeff, you have a phone call.”

“From who?” He asked out of breath.

“Um, I’m not sure.” Diane lied. She didn’t want to worry the kids.

Jeff jogged over to Diane and the house.

“It’s Nancy.” Diane finally said.

Jeff looked stunned. “What does she want?”

“She wants to talk to you about Elizabeth.”

Jeff looked perplexed as he picked up the phone. “Hello?” He said.

Nancy caught her breath. Even after all these years and regardless of everything that went on between them, he could still make her heart beat fast. “Hello Jeff, it’s Nancy.”

“Oh, hi Nancy. How is everything?”

“Not good. Liz was arrested last night.” Not use putting it off.

Jeff was shocked. The last time he saw Liz was six years ago when she was 11 years old and still loved Barbie. “What? Why?”

“She was at some party and she was taken in for drug use.” Nancy said still ashamed at her daughter’s actions.

“Drugs? Liz doesn’t take drugs!”

“How would you know Jeff? You never even got around to see her! You replaced her with kids that aren’t even your flesh and blood!” Nancy had waited too long to say that to her ex.

“I know and I’m sorry for not going to New York to see her, but I’ve been busy! Listen, were just gonna start fighting here so was that all you had to tell me?”

“No, I wanted to see if Liz moving to Roswell was a possibility.”

“You want Liz to live here with me?” He asked perplexed.

“Yes. You have no idea what sort of trouble your daughter gets into here. She gets drunk, she does drugs, she’s had multiple sex partners and she dropped out of school.”

Jeff rubbed his eyes. He had no idea this was happening to his daughter. “When can she be here?”

Diane’s eyes widened. How could Jeff allow that troublemaker to come here to Roswell?

“Well I was hoping maybe she could get the 7 PM flight tonight.”

“Tonight?!?” Jeff wasn’t prepared for Liz to be coming so quickly.

“Jeff, please. I didn’t want to mention this but, last night Liz’s boyfriend beat her up. Please.” Nancy begged.

Jeff closed his eyes. How could he not have known so much had been going on in Liz’s life? “Alright, it’s no problem. She can come tonight. Keep me updated so I can pick her up at the airport.”

Nancy sighed. “Thank you, Jeff.” And with that she hung up.

“Jeff!” Diane shouted exasperated. “How could you let her move here?”

“Diane, she’s my daughter.”

“You haven’t seen her in six years! Now she’s your drug taking daughter! God, what about Max and Isabel?”

“What about them?” Jeff loved his wife, but she really had no right to say bad things about his daughter.

“She’ll be a bad influence. Right now both Max and Isabel are honour roll students destined for greatness. If Liz moves here she’ll…” Diane trailed off.

“Liz?” Isabel asked.

Jeff and Diane looked to the backdoor and saw Max and Isabel standing there confused.

“Kids, sit down. We all need to talk.”

------------------------------------------------------

Nancy and Liz sat at their kitchen table together, both picking at their lunch.

Liz looked at her mom and sighed. “Look mom, I’m sorry ok? I know I haven’t been the perfect daughter but it’s not too late. You don’t have to move me half way across the country.”

“Honey, I want what’s best. Maybe by realizing that I’m serious about all this behaviour changing, you can come back to New York eventually.”

Liz suppressed the tightness in her throat and the tears about to spill over. “And until then?”

“Until then, pack your bags. Your leaving for Albuquerque at 7.”

“Tonight? Mom please! I won’t even have time to say goodbye to everyone…I can’t do this! Don’t do this to me please!”

Nancy shook her head. “I haven’t done anything Liz. You did this all to yourself. Now you better start packing.” She picked up her and Liz’s plates and took them to sink.

Liz sat at the table shocked for a moment before going to her bedroom. Liz leaned against her closed door, her eyes closed. She tried to take a few deep breaths.

“Why are you doing this to me?” Liz said aloud to herself. She sat down on her bed and grabbed her journal. She needed to vent. Desperately.

Why does everyone always want to get rid of me? What is it about me that is so goddamn awful?

First my parent’s get divorced and my dad hasn’t once in six years tried to contact me. Why? Why doesn’t he miss me? Why doesn’t he love me? I guess I wasn’t good enough.

Then I wasn’t good enough for Zan so he had to find someone else. I bet even now, about 10 hours after our break-up, he’s forgotten about me. Because I wasn’t good enough.

And now my mother. My own fucking mother is getting rid of me because I’m not good enough for her!

I just don’t understand what is so horrible about me. Why is this happening to me? I must have done something pretty bad. I try so hard to please everyone except myself. I’ve never been happy with myself. Never.

I was a pretty princess to please my dad. I remember this one Halloween he wanted me to dress up like a rabbit so bad. I on the other hand, wanted to be a witch. He won. I was a white, fluffy, bunny.

And all of my friends. I never wanted to be a druggie. But they did. They were the only people in the world that would accept me for who I was. So I wanted to please them. So I lit up.

I was slut to please Zan. We had sex the first night I met him. I got on my knees at his command. He treated me like dirt. Like I was just a toy. But I believed he loved me. I thought he was the best I could do. Like he was the ONLY person that would ever love a monster like me.

I actually thought my mom would keep me though. I’m just a dreamer I guess. Time to face reality; I’ll never be good enough for anyone. I’m broken, and I can’t be fixed.

------------------------------------------------------

“So this is like permanent?” Isabel asked.

“I’m not sure, sweetie. But Liz will be living here for a while.” Jeff responded. He could tell both his step children were a bit apprehensive about the whole situation.

“Well, what’s she like?” Max asked.

“The last time I saw her was when she was 11 years old. But last night she was arrested for drug use. So something tells me she’s not the same.”

Both of the Evans’ kids looked shocked, but Max was more interested then anything.

“Really? What she look like?” Max asked.

Isabel shot her brother a questioning look. He gave her an innocent smile.

“Um, well she petite, she has brown hair but apparently she just got some blue and purple…um…what do you call them Iz?”

Isabel rolled her eyes at her father. “Highlights.”

“Right, highlights. She’s got piercings and a tattoo.”

“Quintessential New York bad girl then huh?” Max mused.

Jeff, totally oblivious by his stepson’s sudden interest in his daughter, continued. “Yeah, Lizzy is a great girl, she just fell into the wrong crowd.”

Isabel sneered at her brother. Liz was their stepsister! Just the thought of Max getting involved with her made Iz shiver.

“When will she be here?”

“Her plane leaves at 7, so she’ll be in Albuquerque at 1.” Jeff answered.

“I’ll pick her up.” Max offered.

“Oh thanks Max.” Jeff patted his knee as he left the room.

“Max!” Isabel said disgusted as Jeff left the room.

“What?” He asked confused.

“Oh please! Your thinking about getting together with Liz!”

Max laughed. “I was joking, Izzy. She’s our stepsister for Christ’s sake. Relax ok?” He patter her on the head, knowing that action annoyed her most.

Isabel growled and tried to swipe at Max. He laughed and ran upstairs a fuming Isabel following him.

------------------------------------------------------

Liz sat on a bench outside the Albuquerque airport. How typical…I’ve been forgotten about yet again.

“Hey, are you Liz? Sorry were late.” Said a friendly blonde girl. She down beside Liz. “I’m Isabel.”

“Yeah, I’m Liz. Who’s ‘we’?”

“Oh my brother Max is here too. We split to try and find you.” Isabel scanned the area for her brother.

“Oh your Diane’s kids…” The reality sunk in.

“Yeah we are. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Whatever.” Liz said flipping her hair.

“I love your highlights.” Isabel continued trying to make peace with the girl.

“Thanks.” Liz mumbled, uninterested.

Max looked over and saw his sister sitting with a girl completely clad in leather, except for her cotton t-shirt which read ‘Rock Star’. “If that’s Liz I swear I will become a religious man.” He said looking heaven-ward.

Isabel then began waving at him. “There’s Max.” She said to Liz.

Liz looked over to the dark haired guy coming toward them. She cocked her head in interest. “Not bad.” She said aloud.

“What?” Max said with a chuckle.

“Oh, nothing.” Liz ducking her head. Nice first impression, Lizzie. Keep it up, really.

“Let’s just go.” Isabel suggested with a sigh. It was late, she was tired, and she just witnessed flirting between her brother and stepsister.

“Yeah, come on Liz. You can ride up front on me. I mean, beside me.” Max said with a wink.

“You wish.” Liz said walking away from him coolly. She followed Isabel out, leaving her new stepbrother to deal with her luggage.

“I’m so sorry about Max. His hormones are raging.” Isabel said embarrassed.

“Don’t worry, it was just a joke.” Liz said giving the girl a small smile. At least Liz thought it was a joke.

“Still, he shouldn’t have said it.” Isabel said sternly.

Liz just shrugged and got into the jeep. “No biggie. I’m from New York, stranger things have happened.”

The two girls looked back to see Mac struggling with all of Liz’s things.

Liz’s conscience kicked in and she went to help him.

“What did you pack?” Max asked out of breath.

Liz just smiled and bent down to pick up a bag. It was then Max noticed the gash on her cheek.

“What happened?” He asked.

“Nothing.” She said off handily. “Pissed off my ex boyfriend, that’s all.”

“That’s all? It looks pretty painful.”

“Just drop it would you? If your trying to get me to be friends with you or whatever, just forget it ok? I’m not interested.”

“I don’t wanna be friends with you.” Max said seriously as he loaded Liz’s last bag.

“Ok, well good.” That wasn’t the reply she had expected.

“I just wanna get into your pants.” He said with a grin.

“Your sick!” Liz said shoving him. But she couldn’t help but smile. All of this playful flirting felt real good.

“How is that sick?” Max asked as the both got into the jeep. “Your just my stepsister! You know COUSINS have gotten married before.”

“You have a twisted, twisted mind, Max.” Liz said with a shake of her head.

Isabel made gagging noises as the jeep pulled out of the parking lot.

Isabel had fallen asleep in the back during the drive back to Roswell as Max and Liz talked.

“So you were with this Zan guy for like three years?”

“Yeah, kinda on and off though.”

Max nodded in understanding. “You know I was just joking before about….well, you know.”

“Max, don’t worry. I can take a joke.”

“Ok, good, I just didn’t want you to think I was some kind of pervert or anything.”

“Oh I still think you’re a perv.” Liz said nodding her head.

Max laughed as they continued there drive back to Roswell where Liz’s life would start all over again.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I'm really hoping this part is any good!! I was having trouble making Max and Liz into each other while it still being believable.
