Summary: A letter and its repercussions

Maria stopped short as she rounded the corner of the hallway. There in the deserted corridor right in front of her best friends locker stood the one and only Mister Shy, Max Evans.

Maria stepped back around the corner so as not to be spotted and watched him. He looked up and down the hallway a couple of times and then pulled an envelope from his notebook. Looking at it one more time, as if deciding if this was the right thing to do, he quickly slipped it into Liz Parker’s locker.

Maria had to clamp her hand over her mouth to keep from squealing in delight at what she had just seen. She looked on as Max took a deep breath and then somewhat nervously walked down the hall to where Maria knew his locker to be.

Maria smiled to herself, ‘Well Lizzie,’ she thought, ‘Now there can be no doubt that Mister handsome and brooding has a thing for you. But do you ever listen to me, nope never.’ She just shook her head. ‘Nope, it’s always, You’re imagining things Maria or Not this face . God chica, for a geek you really are dense.’

Maria turned around to go look for the subject of her thoughts and gave a squeal. There in front of her stood her best friend, Liz Parker.

“Jeez, give a girl a heart attack, why don’t ya.” She exclaimed, taking a sniff of her ever present cedar oil. Taking a couple quick breaths she popped her usually bubbly smile back in place.

“What are you up to Maria?” Liz asked her wearily.

Liz knew that if Maria DeLuca was quiet, then something was going to happen. From experience Liz knew that it was usually never good.

“What do you mean?” She asked as they made their way over to Liz’s locker.

Liz stopped in front and spun around, leveling Maria with a somewhat playful glare.

“Maria.” Liz dragged her name out, sounding each syllable.

Maria knew she was on to her but this tie she was going to hold her ground and only spill AFTER Liz had read the note.

“Liz, nothing. God what is this, to tell the truth?” she said with a dismissive wave of her hand. “C’mon chica, grab your books for first bell and lets get going.” Maria said, her hand on her hip and tapping her foot.

Liz just looked her in the eye for a second more. Maria usually caved by this point so maybe it was nothing after all.

“I brought it home with me last night, you know homework ?” Liz raised her eyebrows at her to make her point.

“Homework, smomework.” She replied and gave a little flick of her hand.

Maria had to think fast, she didn’t want to have to suffer not knowing what the letter said, hey its best friend privileges. Besides she really wanted to see Liz happy. Liz had been pinning away for Max Evans for ten years now. It started as a little innocent crush and kept growing ever since. Liz had dated a little now mind you, but none of them ever seemed to measure up to her standard, Max. Hell, Liz had gone on a date with Kyle Valenti a month ago, he was one of the most popular guys in school, but Maria knew before it even happened what the outcome would be.

“Hello, Maria…” Liz said waving her hand in front of her face.

“Sorry, spaced out there for a minute. Okay…here let me put some of my books in your locker. I don’t want to carry them all to first bell.” Maria was proud of herself for coming up with that one.

“But Maria, your next class is in the opposite direction from my locker, hello?” Liz said putting a hand on her hip.

Now Liz definitely knew something was up. Maybe Maria and Alex did something to her locker she wondered. She didn’t think they would, but you ever know. They did used to play practical jokes on each other a lot in middle school but she had figured they had all out grown that.

“Why do you want me too open this locker so badly, what did you and Alex do?” Liz queried accusingly.

Maria knew she was busted so she took her next best course of action, she had never really tried this one before but she thought she might as well give it a shot, she tried silence.

Liz just looked at her waiting her out. Now Maria is not exactly known as the most patient person in the crowd, so the wait was not long at all.

“Jesus Lizzie, just open the damn locker will ya?” an exasperated Maria exclaimed.

To say Liz was shocked would be an understatement. She knew Maria wasn’t a morning person but she had never really taken it out on Liz before. The startled look on Liz’s face made Maria feel bad.

“I’m sorry Liz, okay …there’s a note in your locker you should read.” She said trying to hide her excitement.

“From who?” Liz asked innocently.

“God Liz, get it and find out.” Maria just shook her head; sometimes Miss science whiz was just plain slow.

Liz just looked at her for a second and then turned her attention to the locker, with a shake of her head. Dialing in the combination, she opened the door and sure enough a beautiful velum envelope lay atop the small stack of neatly arranged books.

In a breathtaking script, scrolled across the front was just one word. Liz .

Maria started to jump up and down a little as she watched Liz pick the envelope up and look at it. Liz flipped the envelope over in her hands and looked at the back. A fine relief was embossed along the outer edges of the velum; giving it a beautiful texture was well as appearance.

Liz looked back at Maria warily and judging by her excitement she knew it must be something good, well at least she hoped it was. If Maria started to move away as she opened it she would just throw it down before anything bad happened. She had been the target of a couple Deluca / Whitman jokes in the past, and they had a tendency to stain.

Carefully Liz opened the envelope and looked tentatively inside. Inside was a letter written on the same type of paper. Liz took out the letter and unfolded it; she noticed the letter was written in the same unique script as the envelope had been.

“It looks beautiful.” Liz said, just eyeing the paper.

“What does it say?” Maria could barely contain herself. She swore if she had to wait another second she was going to pee her pants.

“I’m not going to read it out loud, give me a second.” With that said Liz turned her attention to the words on the paper and she began to read something that she had no idea was going to change her life….

Dear Liz

I just had to write this letter to you. There are so many things that I have wanted to say, but I can never seem to get my mouth to work when you’re near me. I’ve thought about saying a million different things. I rehearse them over and over in my head, but that’s as for as I ever get. I get near you and I forget how to speak or all I think of to say is something about class. Finally I figured that the only I was ever going to be able to really tell you how I feel would be in a letter.

I have always wanted to tell you how beautiful you are, since I first saw you in the third grade. There has never been another girl who can even come close to rival your beauty. Your hair, so rich in color, like chocolate, flows across your shoulders. I am jealous of it because it gets to know the supple feel of your skin.

I could lose myself in your eyes. Such a soulful doe like color they are. They are so deep and expressive just the same as you. They say the eyes are the windows to our souls. If that’s true then you have the most beautiful soul that there has ever been. Even without that I would still know it to be true.

You are such an incredible person. You care so much about your friends and I can see that they mean a lot to you. You seem to put great value in friendship and don’t take it for granted.

I watch you move as you work, it’s something that I never will get tired of. You have a grace and fluidity that has no match. Its as if it’s a dance that has been choreographed just for you. You seem to float on the air, your feet never touching the ground. I know one simple look from you and I feel as If I’m floating with you. How I wish I could exist in your world if only for a day, just one minute. Just to know your touch or your kiss, I would be able live the rest of my life feeling complete.

You probably don’t see me, I blend into the walls at school, and no one really notices me. I don’t want them to. I wish it was different, but it seems to be how my life is meant to be.

There are so many things that I wish could be different, so many things that I would love to do.

I would love...

To touch your hair and let my fingers run through it.

To feel your hand as it fits perfectly with mine.

To feel the caress of your breath as it touches my cheek.

To feel the brush of your lips as they dance across mine.

To see the love shine from your eyes as mine do for you.

To hear your voice softly call my name.

To be able to tell you once that I love you.

I know these things may never come to pass. But I wanted you to know of them. I wanted you to know that someone out in this world knew how special you really are. I know your soul and it is beautiful, inside and out, the same as you.

Forever yours

Liz had felt the tears coming as she read. The words seemed to speak directly to her, to a place no one had ever touched before, directly to her heart. With a shaking hand she wiped away the tear that had escaped and started it’s wayward journey down her face.

Maria thought she was going to explode from waiting for Liz to finish reading the note. When she saw the tear she started to become worried.

“You okay chica?” Maria asked her friend.

“Oh Maria, its so beautiful.” Liz sniffled.

“I never knew Max was a writer.” Maria said, trying to catch a glimpse of the note.

“Max?” Liz said just above a whisper.

“Yea, Max. Why?” she questioned.

“Maria, the note was unsigned.” Liz’s eyes were starting to get big.

“This is from Max?” she asked her voice starting to tremble.

“I saw him slip it into your locker a little before you came.” Maria reached out and placed a gentle hand of her friends arm. The trembling in her voice had now made its way to her whole body.

Liz was so shocked; she thought for sure she must have been dreaming. There was no way that Max Evans could feel this way about her, but here in black and white was the proof. What was she going to do now? Max hadn’t signed it, so she wasn’t supposed to find out. Should she talk to him? Tell him that she knows it was him? Should she write him a note in return? Her mind was going a million miles a second.

“Maria, what should I do? He said all of these wonderful things. He said he loved me.”

“What should you do? Are you crazy? Go up to that boy and plant one on his lips, that’s what you do.”

Liz just looked at her like she had two heads. Maria was never the practical one, but her plan did have its merits.

“I can’t do that.” She said blushing.

“And why not?” Maria asked with her hands on her hips.

“Oh god, I have biology with him fourth bell.”

“Breath Liz, Breath. Liz just do what you feel in your heart.”

For once she had to admit that Maria had just given her the best advice she could ever get. That’s what she would do. She would follow her heart.

Chapter 2.

Max sat in biology class a nervous wreck. He had done it, done the one thing he had never imagined he would do. He had told Liz Parker how he felt, well not really. Technically it was a note, but close enough. Even though the note had been unsigned it still felt as if he had yelled it to the masses. He felt so exposed and scared.

Max had never been an outgoing person, always keeping to himself and sticking to the shadows. He felt more at ease there. All he had was his sister Isabelle and his friend Michael Guerin. They were the only ones who really knew him, the real person inside, the secrets.

There had been a reason for the secrecy; it wasn’t all just shyness. It’s not exactly easy to tell someone you’re half human, more exactly a hybrid, human – alien mix from another planet. Long ago the three of them had sworn a pact to stay away from others, they had felt it would be easier to stay safe that way. Eventually the isolation had started to tear at them. Splinters had started to form in their personalities from the lack of companionship and outside interactions. That was when it started.

First it had been Isabelle. She had started dating and spending time with other friends. She always made sure that both Michael and Max were okay but she saw them a little less. The change in her had been quick and dramatic. The ice-cold persona she had adopted began to fall away and a sweet kind person took her place. It wasn’t long before she had a regular boyfriend, Alex Whitman. They hit it off almost immediately. She had loved his sense of humor and just his general way of being quirky. She fought the attraction at first, but it didn’t take long for him wear her down. They had been together now for a year and a half, having started dating in the middle of their sophomore year, and she had never been happier. Telling Alex her secret had been hard on Isabelle but they got through it. Alex at first had felt betrayed for not having known sooner but he quickly realized the dangers that could exist by telling the wrong person.

Michael was the next to fall, and he did hard. And for of all people, Liz’s other best friend, Maria DeLuca. They fight and bicker all the time, but it’s just the way they communicate, plus it can be pretty entertaining to watch. The two of them have been together for a year. Michael experienced the same transformation that Isabelle had gone through, but with Michael it was a bit more dramatic. It wasn’t just the part he opened up to Maria, but the other parts he opened up to the world. He took up sketching and his interest in school went from zero to what you would expect from the average high school student.

Max would occasionally spend time with all of them but it was not a common thing. He just couldn’t bring himself to take the final step. Both Maria and Alex had taken the alien news well, but Max knew he wouldn’t be able to face it if the one person that meant the world to him looked at him like a he was a freak. The thought of it had sent him into despair many times, sitting for hours at a time just listening to the Counting Crows.

Finally the pressure had built and built until he couldn’t take it anymore. He wanted her to know what he felt, that she was a very special person and should never doubt that. He only wished that he’d had the courage to sign his name to that letter containing his heart.

Which brought him to the collection of nerves he was at the moment. At any moment Liz would walk through the door. How would he be able to act normal after what he had done? He tried to keep reminding himself that she doesn’t know that it was him, but it didn’t seem to offer enough solace. Max was so lost in his own inner turmoil he didn’t notice the object of his obsession walk in.

Liz stopped briefly as she entered the classroom, her eyes automatically finding Max at their lab table. She had sat next to him for almost three years now and she had never known. Well, if she was honest with herself, she hadn’t had the confidence to believe he could feel that way about her. Maria always told her that he would sneak looks at her all the time, but she just couldn’t bring herself to accept it. Now she had the proof, but what to do with it?

She walked quietly over to their station and set her books down. She turned to him; he was still lost in thought. ‘He looks so handsome’, she thought, ‘I can’t believe he is in love with me! Me! Liz Parker!’, a dreamy smile coming over her face. Class was starting so she reached out and touched Max softly on the arm. His reaction was not what she expected.

Max felt the lightest brush of something touch his arm, as he turned, he realized that the something was not a something at all, but the one and only Liz Parker. Max’s eyes went wide as his head snapped completely around to face her. Before he could help it he gave out a little yelp of surprise and proceeded to knock over his books onto the floor.

“Everything all right Mr. Evans?” The teacher inquired.

The class just snickered as Max bent to pick up his books and notes from the floor, his face red with embarrassment.

“Fine, every things fine. Thanks.” He cringed as he said thanks. Max wondered if this day could get any worse. Liz gave him a sympathetic look; she knew what it was like to embarrass yourself in front of someone you care about.

The teacher explained the assignment as he handed it out to the class.

“Today we will look at blood cells. The lab partner on the right will take a sample of blood from their partner for the experiment. Both of you will catalogue the structure and contrast it to the diagram in your textbook. Any questions?”

When he was greeted with silence he started the class on their assignment. Max breathed a sigh of relief that he was not the one that had to give the blood sample. How would he ever be able to explain it? In the same token he felt bad that Liz was going to be the one and it would hurt her. Max knew that at least there was something he could do about that.

Liz readied the equipment while Max got the lancet and alcohol swabs ready.

“Are you ready?” Liz asked him quietly.

“Yes. You ready?”

Liz nodded her head and waited for Max to begin.

Max opened the lancet and placed it on the tray. He tore open the alcohol swab and reached for Liz’s hand. As he took her tiny hand into his it dawned on him what he was doing. He just froze. He marveled at how small her hand was next to his and how it seemed to disappear in his grasp. Her skin was so soft, softer than he had imagined. He brushed his thumb over her knuckle, amazed at how smooth her skin was.

Liz felt her heart beat just a little faster at the warmth surrounding her hand. She had always imagined what it would feel like to have her hand held by him, but she wasn’t quite prepared for the reality of it. His hands were so big next to hers, yet they were unbelievably gentle. He treated her like fine porcelain. She gave herself a mental shake and tried to focus on the lab, but she figured no one would blame her for her little flight of whimsy.

“Max?” Liz gently prompted him.

“Huh?” he looked up at her like he had just come out of a daze.

“Are you ready?” she said as she turned her hand over and stuck her pointer finger out.

Max looked at her like he was lost and didn’t know which way to turn. His head tilted slightly to the side in question.

“The blood sample?” Liz said gently, her smile growing slightly at his confusion.

That was the moment the real world slapped Max right in the face. His eyes opened a bit in shock and he dropped her hand like he had been burned by it. His face flamed red all the way to the tips of his ears. Max was sure the whole class could hear how loudly his heart was pounding in his chest. He had just been holding Liz Parkers hand and worse yet he was caressing her hand. Oh god, what had he done.

“Liz, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to…I’m sorry.” He stammered.

Liz just smiled at him shyly. “There’s nothing to be sorry about.”

Liz offered him her forefinger and Max swabbed the pad at the tip, his hand was trembling slightly as he did. He placed the used swab on the tray and took a breath to calm himself. He picked up the lancet and offered Liz and apologetic look. Liz smiled and nodded for him to go ahead.

He concentrated on her finger and quickly punctured her skin. Max couldn’t bare to cause her pain so he had focused a small amount of his powers at the point of entry to deaden the nerve endings. Max gently squeezed the end of her finger to cause the blood to pool on her skin. He created the slide and gently took the alcohol swab and covered the small wound. Using his powers again he healed the little opening that had marred her perfect flesh.

“Wow Max, your really good at that. It didn’t even hurt, just tingled a little. Thank you.” Her eyes expressed her gratitude.

Max nodded his head and smiled a little half smile. She loved it when he did that. She wished she could see that look more often, but Max always kept himself pretty closed off. She knew deep inside that she wanted to be the one to make him smile. She just had to figure out a way to do that.

Quietly they completed the lab, writing down their results and going over any differences with the textbook.

As the class drew closer and closer to the end Max felt a little more like himself. He didn’t know why he was so worried, after all he hadn’t signed the note and no one saw him put it in her locker. The only problem was that a large part of him wanted to be found out. But what would happen then? He had probably made a fool of himself just like he had today in class. Max felt that Liz Parker was too beautiful to even consider dating someone like him. His thoughts just swirled around in his head, none of them seeming to get him anywhere.

“Max?” Liz said tentatively.

“Yes?” Max responded quietly.

“I…. found….” She started to say but the bell rang indicating the end of class. They started gathering their books and placed them in their backpacks. When he had finished he waited expectantly for Liz. Together they walked out into the hallway and started down the corridor.

“Liz, you said you found something.” Max prompted her. He could feel his heart begin to race. Had she found out it was him? How would he ever be able to look her in the eyes after what he had written to her? ‘She must think I’m some kind of weirdo.’ He thought.

“What, No, I was just going to say I found today’s lab really interesting, didn’t you?” Liz cringed inwardly as how geeky she sounded. ‘I found today’s lab really interesting. she thought, ‘please tell me I did not really say that.’ She berated herself.

Max gave her a half smile and nodded briefly. “Yea, it was kinda cool.”

As Max stopped in front of his next class he said, “Well this is me, I’ll see ya later Liz.”

He gave her a little wave.

“Bye Max.” she called to him as he entered the classroom.

She continued down the hallway towards her own class. Liz just shook her head, why couldn’t she be less shy. The hard part was over, she knew that he liked her, loved her.

But what was she going to do about it?

Chapter 3.

The Crashdown was pretty busy for a Wednesday night. Liz and Maria were both on till close tonight. The dinner rush had come and gone and they were left with just the stragglers.

It had been over a week since Max had given her the note and still nothing. Aside from him spacing out that day in biology nothing was different. Except that Liz was slowly going crazy from the suspense.

They were standing over at the booths wiping down the tables. The bells above the door announced the entry of another straggler; customers who came in this late knew the drill. Find a seat and they’ll be there in a minute. The girls had trained the regulars pretty well in that respect.

“What am I going to do Maria?” Liz whined.

“I already told you what to do, but do you take my advice noooooo.” Maria chastised her.

“Maria, do you honestly think that I should just go up to him and plant one on his lips?” Liz quipped, her hands on her hips.

Maria just smirked while she was looking over Liz’s shoulder. Liz closed her eyes; somehow she just knew she was about to become really embarrassed. She could already feel the heat rising up her neck into her cheeks.

“There’s someone behind me isn’t there?” Liz asked slowly.

Maria just nodded her head. Liz was about ready to ring her neck, there is something just really wrong with talking pleasure out of someone else’s discomfort.

Liz mouthed, ‘It’s him?’ as she raised her eyebrows for emphasis.

Maria decided it was time to help out, just a little. Lizzie may get pissed now, but she will thank her in the long run.

“Yes, it’s him.” Maria smirked at the look of complete shock that spread across Liz’s face. It was less now that he had heard what she said but more now what he heard Maria say. There was no way that Max wouldn’t know they were talking about him.

Liz slowly turned around and found herself looking into the pair of the most gorgeous amber colored eyes she had ever seen. Her blush deepened just a hair more as she tried to regain her composure. She had to at least get out of this with a little sense of dignity left, that way she could hold her up high while she was ringing Maria’s neck.

“Hi Max.” she smiled up at him.

“Hey. Him who?” he asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.

“Oh that? It’s nothing, you know, just Maria being Maria.” She replied shrugging her shoulders. “Sometimes even I have a hard time understanding her.” She said conspiratorially.

Maria just raised her hands into the air and turned and went back to the kitchen. Spaceboy was working so now was as god a time as any to visit.

Max knew he had walked in on the middle of something, he just wasn’t sure what. He just nodded in understanding, having been witness to it on the occasions he had been with Michael and Maria. Liz led him over to his usual both.

“Cherry coke?” she asked him.

Max’s eyes shot up. “Yea, that would be great.” He smiled at her.

“I always remember what my favorite customers order.” Liz closed her eyes, mortified; she had not just said that.

“I’ll be back with your drink.” She said as she turned away.

Max wasn’t sure but he could have sworn Liz was just flirting with him. ‘Yea right Evans, in your dream.’ He chastised himself.

Max watched her as she went behind the counter and prepared his drink. It was a pretty simple task really but she seemed to make it graceful. He thought his eyes were going to bug out of his head when he saw her put the Tabasco in, and just the right amount too. He quickly picked up the menu that he knew inside and out as she came back over.

“Max, it’s the same menu we had the other five hundred times you read it.” She chuckled at him as she placed his drink on the table.

Max sheepishly set the menu down, his cheeks pinking slightly.

“Have you decided what you’d like?” she asked as she looked at him through a couple of strand of her hair that had fallen out of her ponytail.

Max felt himself starting to slip into Liz land again but he couldn’t help it. She was just such a wonderful person.

“Max?” she prompted him.

“Oh yea, um, I’ll just some Saturn rings.” He sighed.

“Okay, an order of Saturn rings it is.” She said brightly.

“Liz?” Max said, before Liz had the chance to turn a walk away.

“Yea Max?” Her eyes seemed to have taken on this glow that he had never seen before. It was almost like she was expecting something to happen.

“Have you heard the new ‘Pete Yorn’ CD?” Max just cringed at his lame attempt at conversation. Sometimes he swore he should just stick to what he knows and that silence.

“Oh yea.” She said enthusiastically. “I really like his stuff. They had a thing on cable about him. These people followed him around for a few shows, and they got to sit in on the making of his video. It was really interesting. Did you get a chance to se it?”

“No, it sounds like it was really good.” He said nodding his head. Max didn’t know what to do now. He doubted he would ever be good at this kind of thing.

Liz stood awkwardly, not really sure what just happened. It seemed like they were talking really good and then nothing. Why couldn’t this be easier? The more Liz thought about it, the more merit Maria’s approach had.

“I’ll be right back with you order Max.” she smiled shyly at him and went to lace the order with Michael.

Max just shook his head. He should just have Loser tattooed to his forehead.

Liz handed the order through the pass through to Michael. He just shook his head at her.

“What?” She said a little snippy.

“Hey don’t bite my head off just because Max is clueless.” He teased her.

“Michael leave her alone, this isn’t as easy for her like it was for you and me.” Maria said as she leaned her head on his shoulder.

“Oh Maria, what should I do?” she sighed. She leaned her elbows onto the counter and rested her chin on her palms. Even knowing when somebody likes you, no loves you, doesn’t make it easy.

“Liz –“ Maria started.

“I know, I know. Grab him and kiss him.” she just shook her head.

“Well the place is empty except for him and it is closing time. Damn it Liz just go for it. You only live once.” She said with a shake of her head.

“Fine.” She huffed in exasperation. She was tired of them badgering her. She would show them.

She stormed over to Max’s table and stopped right at his side. Max sat back and quickly looked up at her. She looked into his beautiful eyes and she just knew this was the right thing to do. Before she could change her mind she sat right down across Max’s lap. Liz almost laughed out loud at the look of pure shock on his face, his eyes growing huge with disbelief.

Liz placed her hands on his shoulders to steady her. The feel of his powerful shoulders under her hands sent little shocks of desire shooting through her body. Liz reflexively squeezed the flesh under her hands and marveled at the hidden strength lying there. Max may be lean but he certainly was solid. Feeling like she really gad nothing to lose at this point she slowly ran her hands the front of his chest. She could feel the muscles ripple in response to her gentle exploration. She placed her hands flat on his chest and massaged the hard pectorals. Liz knew she wanted to feel her fingers against his flesh but this would have to do, for now.

Liz looked deeply into his amber pools; they seemed to draw her in, leaving her no avenue for escape. Willingly she followed, giving herself up to the force pulling her in. She saw so much desire and love burning in those eyes and it was all for her, only for her.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.” With that said she leaned forward and placed her lips lightly onto his. At first Max didn’t respond at all, then slowly his lips started to move against hers. Liz felt the warmth flow through her at the gentle brush. His lips were so soft and moist, they seemed to cling to hers, telling her that she should always have them pressed to her own.

The taste of him was overpowering her. No matter what, she just couldn’t get enough. She opened her mouth to invite him into her warm depths. Her tongue traced the line of his lower lip until he parted his. Tentatively she tasted the tip of his tongue as it met hers. The contact drew out a moan from deep within her. Liz tilted her head to get a better angle and press her lips a little more flush to his. She slowly swept his tongue with her own, reveling in the textures and taste that were all Max. Slowly she pulled back, her lips clinging to his in protest. She looked into his eyes and saw deep, dark pools of desire, for her.

Max placed his hands tighter around her waste and drew her back to him. Liz leaned eagerly into his warm hard body. Her mouth crashed down onto his, her tongue swept into his mouth with a vengeance. She had waited so long for this to happen, she wasn’t going to miss out on anything.. The feeling of his tongue pushing back against her own made her only increase her efforts. Fiercely they dueled, each of them getting lost in the flames of desire they were fanning.

A small smile was on her lips as she felt undeniable proof of Max’s want of her. Liz wiggled her butt on his lap, placing her now wet heat directly over the bulge that had been steadily growing over the last few moments. Liz signed as the slight friction of her movements sent little waves of ecstasy coursing through her blood. Deepening the kiss even more she boldly started to swivel her hips in a circular motion, grinding her aching core over her incredibly hard manhood. Both of them moaned into the others mouth as the heat continued to build, higher and higher.

“Liz, Liz.” Michael called to her.

“Huh, what?” she asked slightly dazed.

“Your order is up.” Michael grunted.

“Liz, you spaced out there for a moment. I bet I know what you were thinking about.” Maria teased her. Liz’s flushed cheeks and slightly ragged breathing giving her away.

“Maria, enough.” Liz said as she stalked off.

“Michael those two are just pathetic. I thought for sure the note would work. But she isn’t making a move. They are both so shy you just want to slap them and lock them in a room. Hey….” Maria’s eye flickered with an almost evil glint.

“Maria.” Michael warned.

“Michael, it’s for their own good. They’ll be eighty before either of them makes any kind of move. I don’t know about you, but I would like to go to their wedding while I am young enough to enjoy it.” She said with exasperation.

“All right, all right. So what’s the plan?” he asked conspiratorially.

“We’ll tell Max we need something from the storeroom that he won’t be able to find. When he goes in we send Liz in there to help him find it. They go in, we lock the door. We don’t let the out until they kiss at least once.” Maria finished, feeling quite proud of herself.

Michael just shook his head at her. “Maria, that plan sucks, but the sad part about it is that it will probably work. But you forgot one thing.”

“What’s that spaceboy?”

“Max’s powers, he could easily open the door.” Michael said with a knowing smirk.

“Michael, he won’t use his powers in front of Liz.” She replied, looking at him like he should have known better.

Maria rubbed her hands together and smiled. “They’ll never know what hit them.”

Liz took a breath to try and calm herself before she approached Max with his order. She reached his table and quietly placed his order in front of him.

“Here ya go, one order of Saturn rings, nice and hot.” Liz just cringed to herself. When was she ever going to learn that she just wasn’t witty?

Max smiled his half smile at her. “Thanks Liz.”

His eyes connected with hers and that’s all it took. They both just gazed into the others eyes, lost in the feelings that so disparately wanted to show themselves. Liz started to slowly back away.

“I…um…better…get back to …um…” Liz stammered as she slowly slid backwards.

“Work?” Max provided for her.

“Um yea, work.” Liz mentally smacked herself. “Enjoy your food. If you need anything, anything at all, I’ll be right over there.” She said pointing to the pass through.

Michael and Maria just looked at them, shaking their heads.

“Makes you want to just go out there and put them out of their misery, doesn’t?” Michael said in mock disgust.

Maria reached up and smacked him on the back of the head.

“Michael, its not their fault that they’re …challenged.” Maria said with a sigh. “All right lets get this show on the road.

Max was just finishing up his Saturn Rings when Michael called over to him. Max left a ten on the table and went over to the counter near the pass through window to the kitchen.

Michael asked with a shrug, “Max can just grab something for me out of the storeroom?”

Chapter 4.

“What do you need?” Max asked.

“A box of the Tabasco sauce, its up on the top, you can’t miss it.” Michael informed him.

Max made his way thought the double doors into the backroom. Michael gave him a nod of thanks and then turned his attention back to the grill. Max opened the storeroom door and flipped the light on. He looked up at the tops of the racks searching for the box Michael sent him after. Max walked down each row, twice looking for the box.

Max stepped out of the room empty handed and gave Michael a scowl through the archway to the kitchen.

“Michael, can’t miss it huh?” Max ribbed him.

“It’s right on the top towards the back, didn’t you see it?”

“Didn’t see it, you sure its back there?”

Michael had to bite the inside of his jaw to keep from smirking. Maybe this plan would work after all.

“Liz?” He called through the pass through window.

“Yea Michael?” Liz inquired.

“Will you please show blind boy back here where we keep the Tabasco, I need a case of it.” Then as an after thought, “Please?”

Liz just rolled her eyes at him. Liz walked into the backroom and gave Max a shy smile.

“Max I’ll show you where we keep it at. C’mon.” Liz said softly.

“Thanks Liz.” Max ducked his head.

Liz led him into the storeroom and turned down one of the far aisles. Liz couldn’t help but feel a little giddy about being completely alone with Max. She frowned at herself; she knew that even if they were alone, she just didn’t have the courage to do anything. Why did she have to be so shy?

Max followed her down the aisle and looked up to where she was pointing. Behind another box on the top shelf, completely hidden from view was the box Michael needed. Max just shook his head, Michael sometime had a not so funny sense of humor. He was sure Michael was out there laughing it up at his expense.

Max reached up and moved the one box out of the way, took down the Tabasco and set it on the lower shelf. Then he moved the other box back into its place.

“Like I would have ever found that.” Max mumbled to himself.

Liz spun around quickly to hear what Max had said and turned right into his chest. Smack. Max’s arms shot out and captured her upper arms gently in his hands. Liz’s face turned a deep shade of red as she took a second to get her bearings.

“I’m so sorry Max.” She said softly.

Max smiled down at her; his body was going warm all over. As far as Max was concerned Liz could run into him all day long if she wanted to. He would be more than happy to catch her every time.

“There’s nothing to be sorry for Liz.” He said softly, barely above a whisper.

They just stood there like that for a few moments, lost in each other’s eyes. Something seemed to be drawing them together. Their heads started to lean towards each other. ‘Oh my god, it’s going to finally happen, he’s going to kiss me!’ Liz unconsciously licked her lips. That’s when they heard the definite sound of a click. They both sprung apart and looked at each other, their faces a little red.

“What was that?” Liz asked him, still slightly in her Max induced fog.

“Sounded like the door closing.” He said in a sigh.

That was al it took to break Liz out of Max land.

“Max, the door doesn’t close like that. It only has a dead bolt.”

Liz ran over to the door and tried to push it only to find it securely locked. Max had followed her over and watched as she tried a couple more times. Almost immediately it registered in both there minds they were locked in together. Their heads swung around quickly towards each other, their eyes meeting briefly before looking away.

“Well, it looks like we’re trapped.” Liz said with out the least bit of sadness.

“Shh.” Max said to her, placing his finger over his mouth.

Liz looked up at him questioningly and shrugged her shoulders.

“Listen…do you hear that?” Max asked softly. “It’s giggling.”

Liz’s eyes opened wide in shock and indignation. Those bastards had locked Max and her in there together. Liz could feel her blood start to burn just a little with anger. She knew this had to be Maria’s idea and she was going to pay when Liz got out of there.

Liz walked over to the door. “Maria, ha ha, very funny. Unlock this and let us out.” Her hands were on her hips in annoyance. That’s when she heard the word she had not expected to hear.

“No.” It was Simple, to the point and completely unacceptable.

“What do you mean no?” Liz was starting to get a bad feeling about this.

Max just looked on in silent amusement, it was so cute when Liz would get so serious about something. Her brow would furrow and her checks would get rosy. She just looked so beautiful like that. He almost could give Maria a hug, if he wasn’t so nervous about being locked in the storeroom with his dream girl.

“I mean no.” Maria said with a chuckle. She peeked her head up to the window in the door and just smiled her Maria smile.

Liz tried not to smirk, but it was a losing battle. She just looked over at Max and they both knew they had been had. Michael and Maria had joined forces and the result had been a beautifully executed plan. Liz had to give her credit, this was a pretty good one, and she hadn’t suspected a thing. They just smiled at each other; it was actually pretty funny.

“Okay Maria, what will it take for you to unlock the door?” Liz asked.

“Hmm, let me think about that.” Maria started to pace in front of the door pretending to be deep in thought. She stopped dead I her tracks and with a dramatic flair raised one finger up in the air in triumph. Max and Liz couldn’t help but share a little laugh at Maria’s antics.

“Okay here’s the deal. You ready?”

“We’re ready.” They both said together. Quickly they turned to face each other, a little smirk played at their lips.

“A kiss will set you free.” Maria said with a flourish.

“Maria, your really nice and all but I don’t think Michael would like that very much.” Max said a bit cautiously.

Maria just shook her head sadly. This was why they had to resort to locking these two in a room. For two very bright people, sometimes they were as dense as a box of rocks.

“Not me foolish, each other.” She smirked.

Liz and Max looked at each other and blushed right to their roots.

“Liz I don’t want to do anything you don’t want to.” Max said earnestly.

“Max I –“ Liz started but was interrupted by her dad.

“What are you guys doing in there?” Mr. Parker asked as he unbolted the door. Maria and Michael were nowhere in sight.

Max and Liz just looked at each other, both of them not knowing what to say. They shifted from foot to foot. Jeff looked back and forth between the two of them.

“Well?” He queried, his curiosity piqued.

Liz just shook her head and lead Max over to the double doors leading back out to the café.

“Liz I would have, I mean it would have been okay, I wanted…” Max kept turning redder and redder as he spoke. “Liz, I’m really sorry about Michael, I’ll see ya at school.” He escaped out of the kitchen just shaking his head. He was going to have to thank Michael for ruining any chance he ever had with Liz, not that he thought he had a chance anyways.

Mr. Parker looked back and forth between the door Max just left through and Liz. Something was going on but it looked like they were having trouble, and their friends weren’t helping. He had watched Max in the café for years now. He knew Max had a thing for his daughter. Hell, he even liked Max; he was quiet, respectful and very smart. If Lizzy had to date then she could do a lot worse.

“Max seemed a little nervous. You know anything about that?” Jeff asked with a smirk playing on his face.

“Dad! I have customers.” Liz exclaimed in exasperation as she headed out of the kitchen and back into the dinner.

She was going to get Maria for this. She had probably just ruined everything. Max would think that she was just foolish. She had to do something, she just didn’t know what. She just had liked him for so long and now, she knew he liked her but he probably though she wasn’t interested. Oh crap, why didn’t she just done what Maria said to do in the first place.

That’s when the idea hit her. This had to work, she hoped.

Happy Holidays and stay safe..

Chapter 5.

Liz approached Max in the hallway the next day at school. He was standing next to his locker, seemingly lost in thought. She loved how he looked so cute when he was like this. His features would relax and he would almost have a look of peace. She would have liked to see that more often.

“Max.” she asked him quietly as she touched his arm.

The scent of strawberries and vanilla surrounded him, wrapped him in a world he always associated with Liz. He knew that it was her before his eyes even fell upon. When she touched his arm, Max spun around to look at her. Unfortunately he turned to fast and his elbow struck the locker behind him.

It seemed like all activity in the hallway ceased as all eyes turned to Max and Liz. Liz ducked her head as Max just burned bright red to the tips of his ears. Liz tried not to giggle at Max, he had embarrassed himself and she knew he didn’t like being the center of attention. Liz bit the inside of her jaw and kept her gaze concentrated on the floor. Max nursed his now sore elbow and put a self-effacing smile on his face.

“Max are you all right?” Liz asked concerned that he really may be hurt.

‘Way to go Evans’, he chastised himself. ‘You really are smooth. What are you going to do for your next trick, slip on a patch of ice?’

“I’m okay, thanks.”

“Um, Max are you busy after school today?” she asked hesitantly.

Max just looked at her, he couldn’t seem to get his mouth to work. Was she asking him out? What should he say? Max thought of all the possibilities of what this could mean. He just stood there for almost half a minute trying to figure out what to say.

“Max, it’s okay. I understand if you have better things to do.” She said dejectedly.

“No, no, I…I don’t have anything planed.” Max added hurriedly.

“Great I need to get your advice on something, you know from a guy’s perspective.” She said trying to sound nonchalant.

“Sure, okay.” Max tried to hide his disappointment. She needed his help and he was just happy to be able to give her that.

“I’ll meet you at your jeep after school okay?” she asked hopefully.

“Yea, that would be good.”

“Max, do you know of some place we can go where we can talk in private. Its kind of personal.” She added a little bit shyly.

“Sure, I know the perfect place. No one will be around, I don’t think anyone knows about this place.” He assured her.

Now they only had to get through the day.

The day had moved so slow both of them would have sworn that the clock was moving backwards. When the final bell rang, Max sprinted out of the classroom to his locker. He tried three times before he finally got the right combination. He dropped his book twice; it just was not his day. By the time he finally reached the jeep, Liz was leaning against it just staring at her shoes. As he approached her she reached up and tucked her hair behind her ear. That’s when he just stopped dead in his tracks. He loved her hair; he longed to run his fingers through it, to see how soft it really was.

Liz was getting nervous; she had been waiting at his jeep now for ten minutes. Maybe he changed his mind and decided he didn’t want to help after all. She dismissed that immediately, Max wasn’t like that. She felt bad that she had even thought of that to begin with. She was so lost in her thoughts she didn’t notice that Max had come up beside her and had touched her arm.

“Ah!” she squeaked and dropped her book bag.

“Liz, I’m so sorry.” He said apologetically as he bent down and picked up her bag.

“Is okay, I wasn’t paying attention.” She said sheepishly, a light blush creeping up her cheeks.

“Are you ready?” He asked.

“Sure, lets go.” She said as she climbed into the passenger seat.

Max climbed in started the jeep, bringing it roaring to life. He offered her one of his little half smiles as they turned out of the parking lot and headed toward the edge of town. Max turned on the radio and snuck a glance at her. She looked so beautiful with her hair blowing around her. He could just sit and look at her all day.

Their journey ended all to quickly as they turned on to the old dirt road a few miles outside of town. He parked the jeep near an outcropping of rock and just sat back for moment.

“Oh Max, it’s beautiful out here.” She enthused.

“Yea, it real peaceful here, I come out here when I need a place to think. It’s kind of special to me.” he said thoughtfully. “You’re the only person I’ve ever brought out here, or ever wanted to.” He added shyly.

“Thank you Max.” said touched his arm gently. She really wanted him to know how much this meant to her. He was letting her in, she had always dreamed of the day that would happen.

Max nodded, his cheeks turned a little pink.

“So, what was it you needed advice on?” he asked a little apprehensively.

“Well, this is a little embarrassing to ask but, I’ve known you forever and to be honest this is something that Alex just wouldn’t be able to help with.” She qualified.

“Take your time, it’s okay.” He assured her.

Liz took a deep breath and figured she might as well just plunge in. She had to think of it like a band-aide. The quicker you pull it off the less it hurts.

“Okay, there’s this guy that I like.” She paused to gauge his reaction. He hadn’t moved a muscle. She figured she had started down this path now, she might as well keep going to the end.

“Like I said I really like this guy, but I don’t know how to get him to notice me. What should I do?” she asked, her eyes bright with hope and expectation.

Max didn’t know what to say. He was slowly watching his world just crumble away. It never occurred to Max that she could be talking about him. He had become so used to the fact that he would never be with her. Max leaned back heavily against the jeep and tried to concentrate. At least she wanted his help; it was better than not having her in his life at all.

“Liz, I’m not sure. Are you sure you really want my help?” he asked cautiously.

“Max, please?” she begged him as she twisted her hands together.

Max couldn’t help but smile at her. The one thing he did always want for her was happiness. Even if it wasn’t with him, at least he could help her find it.

“You know that his guy likes you?” He asked.

“Yes.” She said softly, her eyes taking on a dreamy look.

Max knew he should have expected the stab of jealousy that coursed through him, but it still took him by surprise.

“Okay, well, does this guy know you like him?”

“He has no idea. I mean if he did wouldn’t he do something about it?” She questioned.

“Maybe he’s just shy and doesn’t know what to say. Some guys get really tongue tied around the girl they like.” He said thoughtfully.

“Do you get that way?” she leadingly asked him.

“I, um, yea I do, all the time. I would never know what to say.” He confessed quietly.

Liz smiled at him, her face lighting up their little corner of the world. Liz wanted to so badly tell him that she was talking about him.

“So should I just go up to him and talk to him?” She asked, her eyes questioning.

“Friendship is always the best place to start I think. You have to like someone as a person before you can, um, you know.” Max shifted uncomfortably.

“You know…what?” She asked innocently.

“Um, love them.” His cheeks grew red.

“Have you ever been in love?” Liz wanted to kick herself, she wanted him to feel comfortable and here she was grilling him with questions. She wondered if there was anyway she could mess this up more.

Max just nodded his head, he was too afraid to speak, afraid that if he said the words he would be showing all of his heart. He didn’t want Liz to feel guilty because she didn’t feel the same way.

“Okay, well let’s say that we are kind of friends, we’ve known each other for a while. What then?”

“Liz, I think that maybe the best thing is to just be honest with him and tell him how you feel. I don’t know, maybe write him a note.” He said, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze in reassurance.

Liz smiled at the all to brief comfort Max was trying to offer her. It was the first time he had ever done anything like that. All she knew was that she wanted to feel his hands on her again. ‘Okay Parker, get your mind out of the gutter and focus.’ She chastised herself.

“Funny you should say that, I got a note a couple days ago. It was stuck in my locker. But it wasn’t signed.” She said sadly, her eyes locking with Max’s.

“Really?” he choked out.

“Um hm.” She nodded. “It was the most beautiful thing I have ever read.” She added wistfully.

“You thought it was beautiful?” He asked, a touch of disbelief in his voice.

Liz nodded her head, her eyes bright with the emotion. She so desperately wanted Max to tell her it was him. She wanted him to have the courage to take that step.

“Do you have any idea who put it in your locker?” He asked anxiously.

“No, like I said it wasn’t signed.” She said regretfully. “The handwriting was so beautiful and it was on this really great paper too, rice paper I think.”

“Vellum.” Max said distractedly.

A broad smile just broke out across Liz’s face. He had given himself away and he didn’t even realize he had done it yet. Liz looked up at his handsome features, she had never really given herself the freedom to just openly stare at him but now she did. The deep amber of his eyes, those soulful eyes that she had always wanted to fall into. His strong cheekbones, she wanted to know the feeling of them under her fingertips.

Max looked down at her, her smile was contagious and he grinned back. He loved it when she smiled; her eyes sparkled when she did. They seemed to draw him in; their beautiful chocolate depths were a place he never wanted to find his way out of.

“What?” He asked when she just continued to smile at him.

“Vellum?” She asked, merriment lighting her smile.

Liz tilted her head slightly to the side and watched it slowly sink in what he had done. His eyes got a little bigger and he blushed all the way to the tips of his ears. Max knew he was found out and he had even given himself away.

“Liz, I put the note in your locker.” He said, his voice barely even a whisper.

Liz took a step closer to Max and placed her hand on his arm. Max lifted his gaze and met hers. Her eyes were filled with so much emotion.

“Max, did you really mean all of those things you wrote, do you really feel that way?” The amazement was laced through her voice.

Max nodded his head shyly. His heart was pounding in his chest and he could hear the blood rushing through his ears.

“Liz, I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable because of this.” Max started to explain.

“Max, shh.”

Liz reached out and took his hand, intertwining her fingers with his. She leaned back against the jeep next to him and laid her head on his shoulder. The feel of his firm body against hers felt better than any of the fantasy’s she had ever had. His scent wrapped itself around her as she closed her eyes and just let the moment embrace her.

Max was afraid to breath, to move, to do anything. He didn’t want to disrupt the fantasy that was playing out. He just didn’t want this one to end because it all seemed so real. The feel of her hand in his, warmed him more then any fire ever could.

“Liz, is this real?” He asked.

Liz turned to face him and she caressed his check in her hand. The soft pads of her fingers played on his solid cheekbones. Liz brushed her thumb over his lips. Liz didn’t realize she had been leaning closer and closer to him, both of them drawn together by some unseen force. Liz licked her lips in anticipation of the kiss. This was the moment she had waited for, both of them had waited for. Her hand crept to the back of his neck and caressed the nape of his neck. Her fingers becoming lost in the hair she found there. Max watched in fascination as her eyes started to flutter close, her head tilting just a little farther upwards.

Liz opened her eyes to find him hovering just a fraction of an inch away. She could feel the warm puffs of his breath as it fanned over her face. Liz could feel him trembling under the fingertips on his neck.

“Max, it’s okay.” She whispered. Her lips brushed his as she spoke, the innocent contact sending currents of electricity coursing through their bodies. That was the catalyst they needed. The final distance separating them feel away as their lips softly pressed together. The kiss was brief and a little awkward but it was the most incredible feeling either had ever experienced. They pulled back slightly and looked at each other through new eyes. Eyes filled with disbelief, wonder, passion and love returned.

His first kiss had been perfection. It was the only way he would ever be able to describe it.

Liz moaned softly, it called to Max and he brought his lips once again flush with hers. He moved his lips lightly over hers, reveling in their softness and contours. Her lips tasted of strawberries and Liz. It was a heady combination; one he didn’t think he would ever get enough of. He opened his mouth slightly and took her upper lip in his. Gently he closed his lips on hers and suckled her into his mouth.

They pulled back a little and rested their foreheads against each other. Their eyes were saying all of the things that their voices would have never been able to at this moment. They both closed their eyes and tried to fully comprehend that this was actually happening.

“Liz, is this really happening?” he asked voicing his thought finally.

Liz couldn’t stop the smile that blessed her lips. She gently messaged the skin of his neck, drawing a low groan from Max.

“If this is a dream, please don’t ever wake me up.” She mumbled finally.

“I’ve dreamed of this moment for so long…” Max said dreamily.

“Max, where do owe go from here?”

“I don’t know Liz, but I do know that I don’t want to go anywhere without you.”

“Oh Max.” She breathed.

The world fell away as they slowly they leaned in for one more kiss.

Chapter 6.

They drove back to Roswell in a blissful silence. Both of them were trying to come to grips with the events of the day. They were together; it all seemed like such a dream. They both kept stealing glances at one another, just trying to seek confirmation that it was really happening.

“Yes Max?’

“Um…. I’ve never dated anyone before…. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do. I mean, I know that I want to take you out to dinner, to the movies, go for walks. All of those things, but what, I mean, how do I…ugh… this is so frustrating.” He said, shaking his head.

“Max it’s okay. I want to do all of those things to. I have for a while.” She admitted shyly.

Max smiled at her, his eyes sparkling with the happiness his heart was bursting with.

“Is it okay to hold your hand in school?” Max asked with embarrassment. He didn’t want to seem like he was completely socially incompetent but his lack of experience was frustrating. He didn’t want to do the wrong thing and upset her. Max shook his head at his own naiveté.

Liz reached out and placed her hand on top of his, giving him a shy smile as the warmth of his skin spread through her.

“I expect my boyfriend to hold my hand.” She said before she realized it. Her eyes went wide in shock at her boldness. “I mean if that’s what you want.” She looked at him with a mixture of hope and embarrassment.

“Boyfriend?” he asked unsure, his eyes lighting up with anticipation.

Liz turned bright eyes to his, she didn’t know if this day could get any better.

“If you want to be.” She said softly.

Max nodded his head, unable to speak. Liz Parker was his girlfriend. It was just so hard to believe. Everything he had ever wanted, ever dreamed of, was happening. He just kept thinking that the alarm clock was going to start ringing soon and this beautiful dream would be coming to an end.

“Um…would you like to go out this Friday night?” he asked, his eyes sparkling with happiness.

“I would love to…where are we going?” she asked enthusiastically.

Max looked down briefly in embarrassment. He had been so caught up in asking he hadn’t really thought of what they would do.

“Um…I…. I haven’t thought they far ahead yet.” He admitted sheepishly.

Liz’s giggle filled the jeep with its wonderful melody. She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.

“I’m sure it will be perfect, as long as its with you.” Her cheeks pinked slightly at her admission.

Too quickly they were back in Roswell and in front of the Crashdown. They looked at each other, a little unsure of what to do now. They had shared a kiss in the desert, but that had been in the heat of the moment. Max reached out tentatively and touched her hair, letting its silky texture pass through his fingers. He pushed a strand of hair behind her ear and let his hand linger there; slowly it made its way to the back of her head. With a gentle pull they started moving towards each other. Liz’s heart accelerated as their lips neared each other. Liz felt a bubble of joy inside of her, she felt giddy with the thought of his lips gently pressing against hers. They could feel the puffs of breath from each other caress their lips, the warmth fanning across their faces. Their lips finally met, the upper ridges just making contact.

“Lizzy, what you doing?” Jeff Parker asked with a bit of amusement. He knew his daughter had a crush on this young man for a while now, even if she wouldn’t admit to it. A blind man could see that the looks that passed between them were more than just friendship. Jeff had a feeling that he would be seeing a lot of Max in the future. In fact he had the sinking suspicion he would be welcoming him as a member of the family, a lot sooner than he would like to. Jeff would have to watch these two, but for now he would have a little fun at their expense.

Liz and Max jumped apart as if they had been electrocuted. Both their faces flushed red with embarrassment. Liz brushed a hand through her hair while Max straightened his shirt.

“Nothing daddy.” Liz replied as innocently as she could muster.

“So that’s what they call it nowadays?” Jeff asked, his eyebrow was raised questioningly.

“Daddy!” Liz scolded him.

Jeff knew he had stirred up enough trouble, he was more than likely going to get an earful from Nancy for this. Jeff sighed, he might as well go tell her himself and take his punishment now. He smirked to himself as he made his way back into the café. It had been worth it.

“Max, I’m so sorry.” Liz started to apologize.

“Liz, its not your fault. It could have been worse.” He said, trying to look for the silver lining.

“He thinks he’s funny, but he’s really not. Mom and I just haven’t had the heart to tell him.” She whispered conspiratorially

“Is it okay for me to pick you up for school tomorrow? Say about 7:30?” he asked hopefully.

The smile that broke out over Liz’s face nearly floored him. She was so beautiful and it only kept getting better. He was going to be the envy of every guy in school. That thought alone made him shudder, what if she realized that she could do better? Be with someone who was normal? Would he be able to handle having been this close only to loose it?

Liz nodded her head eagerly and gave his hand squeeze. Max hopped out of the jeep and came over to the passengers’ side. Extending his hand, he helped Liz out of the jeep. The contact was far to brief, but that was probably for the best. Max placed a light kiss to her lips and backed away to the drivers’ side, a half smile lighting his face.

“I’ll see you in the morning.” He said softly.

“I’ll be waiting.” She blushed.

“Um…Liz…can I call you?” he said looking down at the ground, his foot kicking imaginary rocks.

“I expect you to.” She teased him. “I want to say good-night to my boyfriend.”

Max smiled brighter and hopped into the jeep. The engine roared to life. Max waved to Liz as he backed out and headed home.

Liz made her way to the door but turned and watched the jeep as it disappeared into the distance. Her life had changed, in a lot of ways she felt like she had just started living for the first time.

…And it’s only going to get better.

Chapter 7.

Hand in hand Liz and Max made their way through the halls of West Roswell High School. As they passed, conversations stopped and heads turned. In their wake they left a trail of very curious onlookers. Liz caught the eye of a few of the girls as she passed, all of them leveling her with varying looks of envy and outright hatred. She was with the schools most sought after boy. Who would have thought that the shy, petite, nerdy, quiet Liz Parker could have pulled something like that off?

As they rounded the corner, conversation erupted from the hallway they had just vacated. Max looked over at Liz as they made their way to her locker, her hair billowing slightly as she walked, the rose tint to her cheeks, her smile held shyly in check. She was all he had ever wanted and more.

“Liz?” Max asked her, looking down at his feet.

“Yea Max?” she said looking over her shoulder as she took out her books for the mornings classes.

“Why were some of those girls giving you the looks they did?” He questioned her innocently.

She turned her gaze on him and looked up into his deep amber eyes. The genuine question etched on his handsome features telling her that he really just didn’t understand. He was the most incredible person she had ever met; all of the female population at school knew it. Max just had no idea.

“Max, you really don’t know do you?” She asked in slight disbelief.

“Know what?” He answered, his eyes blinking in confusion.

“You.” She said with a giggle.

“Me?” He wondered.

“Max, you’re a wonderful guy. No girl around school has ever been able to get you. And here I am, mousy Liz Parker, walking down the hall with your hand in mine. They just can’t figure it out.”

“Liz, you are far from mousy. You’re the most beautiful girl I have ever seen, will ever see in my life.” He said sincerely.

Liz smiled sweetly up at him and closed her locker door. She reached up and placed a little kiss on his cheek. They were about to turn and head towards Max’s locker when one slightly irate Maria Deluca attacked them.

“YOU!” Maria exclaimed in annoyance as she stormed up to them, Michael was in tow, looking browbeaten and a bit sympathetic.

“Me?” Liz tried to act innocently.

Maria narrowed her eyes and gave her a scolding look. “Some best friend you are. What, no phone calls? No ‘Hey Maria, I’m finally with the boy I’ve been in love with since forever.’” She exclaimed dramatically, her arms flailing about.

“Maria!” Liz exclaimed in terror.

Liz’s eyes went wide in shock and mortification. Her cheeks flamed a bright pink as she felt the heat of her blush flood through her face. Maria realized her mistake a beat later and raised her hand to her mouth as if trying to capture the words that had been released and put them back for safekeeping. Michael for his part remained quiet, he had already been reprimanded once today and he didn’t need to go through that again.

Max just stood there, his eyes blinking rapidly, trying to take all of this in. Liz Parker had been in love with him? She had cared about him for a long time? How was this possible? He mentally kicked himself for all of the time he had wasted. He wished he had listened to Michael and Isabelle all along and just taken a chance. It had just been so hard for him to give up even that little extra control in an already out of control life.

“Well hello, bother dear.” Isabelle said as she and Alex joined the group. Isabelle took in the shocked and regretful expressions on various faces and could only assume Maria had done what she is known best for, placing her foot squarely in her mouth.

“Hey, …Liz, is it hot in here or is it just you?” he said with his famous smirk, bobbing his head up and down as he always does.

Isabelle pinched him and gave him a reprimanding look.

“Hey, what was that for?” Alex yelped.

“Leave them alone, be nice Alex.” She warned him.

“What’d I do? And I’ll have you know I am very nice. I mean, I could have said something like, --“ Isabelle cut Alex of with an icy glare.

“Duly noted ma’am.” Alex returned with a mock salute.

Liz looked around at all the expectant eyes and she just wanted to crawl into her locker and disappear…with Max of course.

“Oookayyy, this is a lot of fun, but, um, we’ve, got to go to Max’s locker and pick up his books, sooo, we’ll see you at lunch.” Liz said hurriedly. She grabbed Max’s hand and pulled him along in the direction they had just come in.

“Hey, Liz?” Alex called out to her.

Liz stopped dead in her tracks and looked briefly up to the ceiling. With a quick glance to Max in apology, she turned around and waited.

“Liz, I think Max’s locker is in the other direction.” He said pointing over his shoulder and down the opposite hallway.

The group tried to suppress their chuckles but a few escaped, causing both Liz and Max to flush more.

Alex dared a quick look to Isabelle and then as Max and Liz approached them on their way down the correct hall he just couldn’t help himself.

“Hey you kids look like you could use a cigarette.” Alex however was not fast enough to dodge the hand that came out and smacked him in the back of the head. “Ow. How do you do that so fast.” He said as Isabelle grabbed his arm and started walking them away.

Maria cast a knowing look at Michael.

“What? I didn’t say anything.” He defended himself.

“And you thought you had it bad. Humph.” She said indignantly as she strode away.

“See ya guys at lunch.” Maria said to Max and Liz. As she was about to pass them she stopped and backed up a step and wagged her finger at Max. “You, you two stay out of the Eraser Room, you are not officially licensed for that area yet.” With a smirk at the ever-deepening color washing over the two new lovebirds, she strolled merrily on her way.

Michael shrugged his shoulders helplessly and just followed along behind her, his eyes were anything but apologetic.

Liz turned to face Max and laid her forehead against his chest. The slow rise and fall of his breathing soothed her as his scent crawled up and around her adding to her newfound sense of peace.

“Tell me when this day is over with.” Liz said a little wearily but with a slight giggle.

“I’m so sorry Liz, I never meant to cause you this much trouble.” He said sadly.

“Max, it’s okay. They’re just having fun, at our expense, but just having fun. Besides,” She said as she looped her arm through Max’s, “your worth it.”

Chapter 8.

Liz and Max approached the cafeteria door slowly. Looking around they spotted Maria and Alex already seated at their usual table. Maria spotted them and began waving frantically for them to come over.

Liz looked up at Max and smiled softly.

“Are you ready?” She asked.

“When I’m with you, I’m ready for anything.” He said, his lips tilting into a little smile.

“I’ll have to remember that.” She said, her voice a little huskier that she intended. The thoughts that raced through her mind made her cheeks blush a light pink. Her eyes darted quickly to his in question, worried of what he would think at her comment.

Max blushed, right to his ears. God he was so adorable when he did that, she thought to herself. She gave his hand a quick squeeze and she led them over to the table where their friends were seated.

“Hey chica.” Maria greeted her. “Hello, lover boy.” She gushed at Max.

Max ducked his head and gave her a small wave.

“Maria!” Liz scolded her. She fixed her with her best glare and put her arm through Max’s, pulling him a little closer on the bench.

“Don’t mind Maria, she hasn’t had her regular dose of the oil d’jour.” Alex commented dryly around his sandwich.

Maria was fixing to set her sites on Alex when she spotted Michael over his shoulder. Almost as if in déjà vu, Maria started frantically waving her arms to get him and Isabelle to come over.

“You know Maria, if you flap just a little harder I’m sure you’ll be able to fly south for the winter.” Alex said before he could stop himself.

Maria turned to him slowly and raised her fist to him. As a smile began to spread across her face, she slowly raised her middle finger to him.

Liz clutched Max a little tighter and sighed. These were her friends, so much for the process of natural selection.

“Max ignore them, this is what its like at feeding time in the zoo.” Liz said dryly.

Michael and Isabelle arrived at the table; Isabelle sat down next to Alex and laid her head on his shoulder. Michael sat across from Maria causing her to raise her eyebrows at him.

“What did you do spaceboy?” she asked accusingly.

“Me?” he said innocently, pointing to his chest.

“Yes you, you’re out of striking distance for a reason. But don’t let yourself have a false sense of security, I’ll still get you.” She warned him. “So give it up.” She glowered.

“Michael, I wouldn’t mess with her. She already flipped me off.” Alex warned him.

“You really want to know right now?” Michael asked a little uncomfortably.

“You better believe it buddy boy.” She said sternly.

Michael reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope. He looked at it briefly and took a breath to steady himself. With a brusque gesture her handed the envelope to her.

“What’s this?” She asked curiously.

“Um, Maria? It’s called an envelope, they usually have stuff in them.” Alex said as he played with the end of Isabelle’s long hair. “You do what’s called opening them to find out what’s on the inside.”

“Alexander Charles Whitman. What is you-“ She stopped as Alex raised his hands in surrender. “That’s better. I ‘m warning you mister, one more peep and that’s it.”

Max shook his head at the antics of everyone at the table. They truly were all really good friends, no that wasn’t quite right, they were like a family. Max felt the sadness well up inside of him. He had missed so much of this, the simple joys of being with friends. He didn’t want to do that anymore.

Liz sensed the slight melancholy feeling come from Max and she wrapped her arm around him and began a slow circular motion on his back. She offered her warmth and caring through her touch, wanting him to know she was there.

Max looked down at her and smiled gratefully to her. She was wonderful, just when he thought there was no way he could possibly love her more, she does things like this. He reached over and brushed his thumb over her cheek, the din of the table fell away as he touched her tender skin, its warmth sending tingles through his fingers. He found himself leaning in, his lips nearing hers as she turned her head upwards to meet him. There lips brushed softly, just the barest the hint of a kiss passing between them when Maria’s voiced slashed through the foggy walls they had shrouded themselves in.

“PROM!” Maria squealed. Jumping up she ran over to Michael and proceeded to slap him first and then place a few soft kisses to his lips and face. “I love you, spaceboy.” She said enthusiastically.

Liz smiled at her friends; they were just too funny sometimes. She had never been to a prom, she had been asked but had turned it down. It hadn’t been the boy she wanted to go with and she didn’t want to go just to go. She wanted it to be special. She wanted it to be the night that all her dreams came true, the night she became a woman with the man she loved. The man she wanted to spend forever with. She wanted it to be Max.

Max had wanted to get her prom tickets today, but he had been so nervous. Did they have to be together a certain amount of time before he could ask? Would she say yes?

“Um, Liz? Can I talk to you?” Max asked her quietly, having made up his mind. He figured it was better to have tried and failed than not to at all. He didn’t want to be afraid to take a chance, after all, look what happened when he did. He got to be with his dream girl.

Liz smiled shyly up at him and nodded her head. Max stood up and offered her his hand and he led them out to the quad. The light breeze played with the ends of her hair as they made their way to the shade of a tree. Max sat down at the base and leaned back against it. Liz looked down at him curiously. Max patted his lap and smiled up at her, the blush tingeing his handsome face. Liz looked shyly down at him, her own blush heating her cheeks. Her mind flashed back to her fantasy in the Crashdown. Liz tried to calm her traitorous nerves as she sat down on him. Max wrapped his arms around her middle and eased her back against his chest. Liz could feel the powerful beat of his heart, it matched her own in intensity and pace. The rise and fall of his chest gently rocked her petite frame as he cradled her to him.

“I wanted to ask you something, okay?” He said as he took one had and scratched the top of his ear. Liz knew that was one of his nervous habits. When you’ve watched someone as long as she had, you learn theses things.

“Anything.” She said softly, she laid her head back on his shoulder and looked into his deep amber eyes.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to, just so you know, but I was wondering…well what I wanted to ask you was…oh.” Max paused and took a breath. He had to think of this like a band-aide. Quick and then it’s all over. He cast his eyes to where his hand lay clasped in hers.

“Will you go to prom with me?” There. He had said it.

He looked up and to gauge her reaction, her silence didn’t seem to be a good thing. He saw the single tear that had started to descend down her cheek.

“Liz?” He whispered tentatively to her. He didn’t know what to do in these types of situations.

Liz wiped her hand across her cheek and smiled up at him. She leaned up and placed a lingering kiss on his lips, letting hers cling to his.

“Yes.” Was all she said.

She leaned up and kissed him again sweetly. She had meant for the kiss to be a mere peck, a thank you. As she pulled back, their lips finally parting she looked into his eyes and she saw his emotions shining back out to her. He had such a beautiful soul, one she wanted to spend the rest of her life getting to know.

Max shocked her by leaning forward again and capturing her lower lip between his. He nibbled it and then moved to her upper lip and did the same. Max loved how she tasted; it was a mixture of soap, lip-gloss and Liz. He angled his head slightly more to the side and took her lips again. He brushed his back and forth over her tender mouth; he ran his tongue along the top of her lower lip. She opened her mouth to him and let his tongue meet hers. Gently they touched, sweeping passionately against each other.

Slowly they broke the kiss and Liz laid her head back down on Max’s shoulder. They sat there in silence, just enjoying the warmth of the sun on their faces and the light breeze ruffling their hair. Max pulled her tighter to him for a moment; he needed to make sure this was real, that she was really here in his arms.

This was real. He was living life, not just watching it go by. The best part was that she had the girl he had always dreamed of by his side to share it with. Max’s smile slowly started to fade but he hid it before Liz saw it.

He had one tiny problem with prom, he didn’t know how to dance.

Chapter 9.

Liz had to work that Friday night until close, with her ever present sidekick Maria by her side, they went about there normal routine.

“What will you be having tonight?”

“Can I refill your drink for you?”

“Would you like dessert?”

Liz just wanted this night to end so she could talk to Max. It was sappy and she knew it but, you know what? She didn’t care. She was in love and she was going to enjoy it. She drifted of into Max land as she cleaned the milkshake machine.

When will he say I love you? She knew that he had written it in the letter he had given her few weeks ago now, but it’s much different to actually say the words. She wondered what she would do when she finally heard it. Would she cry, jump around, or look at him with a blank look…the shock of it being just too much for her to deal with in that moment. Who knew? But that didn’t matter; she knew how they felt about each other, deep inside, where it mattered.

They had spent quite a bit of time together since Max had asked her to the prom. Taking walks with no destination in mind, going to a movie or maybe grabbing something to each. Max had even come over once to her house to watch a movie. It would have been so romantic if it hadn’t been for her mom checking on them every ten minutes. Just the thought of all of that wasted make out time set her nerve endings into a tizzy.

Maria stood next to the pass through window in the kitchen; Michael was working the grill tonight. The dinner rush had died down and they were just enjoying a little bonding time.

“Will you look at her?” Maria said with a little giggle.

“What?” Michael asked distractedly.

“She has got it sooo bad.” She said.

“Hasn’t she always been this way?” He asked.

“No, this is like way worse than before.” She observed in amusement.

“What, now you don’t want them together?” He asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.

“Of course, I want them together.” She said emphatically, giving him a little swat just to enforce her point. “It’s just…they have something so special. You can just see it when they’re together. Now that’s true love.” She said wistfully, as she put her elbows on the counter and rested her chin n her cupped hands.

Michael looked at her a little concerned. Was she trying to tell him something?”

“And what are we, chopped liver?” he asked, slightly offended.

“Chopped Liver? Where did you here that expression. Wait. Never mind, I don’t even want to know. No. We are not Chopper Liver.” She said with exaggeration. “What we have is different. Don’t worry spaceboy, I still luv ya. God knows, no one else could put up with you.” She said with a sly smirk.

Michael used his powers to quickly clean off the spatula in his had and he proceeded to smack her right on the ass.

“Hey!” She exclaimed.

“Just extracting the proper punishment for you transgression. I’m easy to get along with.” He said indignantly, but the smirk on his face gave him away. He looked into her beautiful eyes and said the words that he knew he always would feel. “I love you.” He said softly.

Maria reached up onto her tiptoes and planted a kiss on his cheek. With a little wave, she turned and made her way out to the café and made her rounds. Liz was still lost in thought over at the, now sterile, milk shake machine. After all of the customers, the whole two that were left, were taken care of, she headed over to Liz. It was time to pull sleeping beauty out of her Max induced sleep.

“Liz?” Maria said softly.

No response.

“Liz?” she said a little louder.

No response.

Maria got an evil smirk on her lips; she knew there was one thing that would get her attention. “Max is here.” She whispered.

“Max?” Liz questioned, now fully alert and scanning the café for his handsome form.

“You’ve got it soo bad girlfriend.” Maria ribbed her.

“I do not.” Liz said a little haughtily.

“Oh no?” Maria challenged her, her eyebrow raised and a smile playing at her lips.

Liz looked at her and admitted defeat. “All right, so I do. Is that so wrong Maria? Don’t I get a chance to be happy?” she sighed.

“Of course you do chica. And believe me, this is it. He will be your last boyfriend. I can already see it.” She said with a shake of her head.

The bell above the door called out its greeting, as the café door opened. Liz’s head turned quickly to the door, hoping to see the object of her obsession. A look of disappointment crossed her beautiful feature as Alex approached the counter.

“Evening ladies.” He said cordially. “Jeez Liz don’t look so happy to see me.” He joked with her.

“Oh, I’m sorry Alex. My minds just on other things.” She said half-heartedly.

“What little miss sunshine here is trying to say, is that she misses her Maxie poo.” She said jesting with her.

“Never fear Liz, Alex has arrived with wondrous news.” He said with a flourish.

“What are you talking about Alex?” Liz asked exasperatedly.

“Can you count?” he questioned her.

Liz looked at him like he had finally grown that third head he had been hoping for. “Can I count? What kind of question is that?” she asked sarcastically.

Alex just ignored her. “Count to five.” He said mysteriously.

“Alex?” She warned.

“Okay, now just count to three.” His smirk just kept growing at the agitated look on Liz’s face. Maria was right, Liz was hooked, no doubt about it.

Liz just glared at him, she knew the only way to pacify him was to do it. Then she hoped they would just let her finish out the rest of her shift in silent misery.

As she finished saying the last number, the bell above the door announced the entrance of another customer. As the chime faded away, that’s when she felt it, a sense of peace and love, of completeness. Liz looked towards the doors and her heart started pounding a mile a minute. The smile on Liz’s face could have lit the entire night sky in its brilliance and intensity. Before anyone knew what had happened, Liz had tossed her cleaning rag aside and was already half way to him.

They could do nothing but sigh as the scene played out before them. Liz hurled herself into his arms and wrapped her own tightly around him. She pulled back quickly and firmly planted her lips on his, sighing into the kiss as she felt her need for contact with him start to become satisfied and yet deepen at the same time. She opened her mouth in invitation to his tongue, which he eagerly accepted. They lost themselves in the kiss for a few more moments before the clearing of a throat interrupted them.

Liz pulled back briefly and mumbled her annoyance. “Leave me alone Maria.”

“I’m not Maria, and I didn’t know we had a new way of greeting our customers Liz.”

She knew that voice. It was the same voice that had interrupted them once before. Not again. How many more times was she going to embarrass herself like this? ‘You know what?’ She thought, ‘it’s worth it.’.

Breaking the kiss begrudgingly, she stepped back slightly from Max, but not out of his arms this time. She was gong to make a statement. She was with Max and she didn’t want to hide that from anyone, not even her father.

“Hi daddy.” She said meekly.

“Lizzie, Hi Max.” He said warmly.

“Hello Mr. Parker.” Max said through his tightened throat, he could feel the heat pouring off of him from the blush that had risen all the way to the tips of his ears.

“Lizzy, why don’t you go ahead and spend some time with Max if you want. I can close up.” Jeff offered unexpectedly.

To say that Liz was shocked would have been the understatement of the century. She thought about asking him if aliens had abducted him or if he was feeling all right. But she decided not to waste anymore make out time with her wonderful boyfriend and just be gracious for her early release.

“Thanks daddy, we’ll be on my balcony. Is that all right?” She asked hopefully.

“That’s fine, just not too late. Aren’t you going to ask Max if he wanted something to eat?” He teased her.

Liz felt her cheeks flame up. She hadn’t even considered if Max was hungry. She had been so happy just to see him that every thing else had just flown out of her mind. Liz raised her hand to her mouth, mortified.

“Oh my god, Max. I’m so sorry. Of course we’ll get something to bring with us. Is that okay?” she babbled quickly. Her new found embarrassment just making it worse.

Max smiled down at his incredible girlfriend and nodded his head.

“Night daddy.” She called over her shoulder as she led them into the backroom. She went and placed their order for takeout with Michael and they seated themselves on the tired couch next to the lockers.

They looked at each other and smiled. They had a full night ahead of them. Tonight was going to be magical.

Chapter 10.

“Order’s up kids.” Michael called to them.

Liz made her way over to the kitchen and picked up their take out bags.

“Liz, could you grab a bottle of Tabasco too please?” He called to her in the kitchen.

“I will.” She said, a slight smile lighting her face. Maybe one of these days she would be able to appreciate what this toxic stuff had to offer. Maybe…

Once they had everything they needed, she grabbed Max’s hand and they headed up the stairs to the apartment. They made their way in and started towards Liz’s room.

“Is that you Liz?” Her mom called out from the kitchen.

“Great.” She whispered, rolling her eyes. “Yea mom, it’s me. Max and I are going out on my balcony to eat.” She called back to her.

“Okay honey, you two be careful. Hello Max.” She said as she entered the room wiping her hands on a dishrag.

“Hello Mrs. Parker.” Max said softly.

“Okay mom, we’re going.” Liz pulled Max’s hand as she ushered them to her room.

Liz opened the door and pulled him in, closing it behind her. She set about quickly getting herself ready for their dinner. She pulled her hair back into a very loose ponytail, leaving quite a few tendrils of hair down to frame her face. She grabbed a pair of khaki’s and a baby tank top from her closet.

“I’ll be right back.” She said as she entered her bathroom and quietly shut the door.

Liz undid the snaps to her uniform and slipped it off her body, and laid it on her vanity. She went to pick up her baby tank top when she caught her reflection in the mirror. She turned towards it fully and looked herself over. Nice hair, pretty eyes, even she had to admit that, slim, and from there it went downhill. She was not exactly tall, only 5’2”. It kind of made it easy for most people to never give her a second glance. Her hips were okay but not really curvy like some she had seen. She turned sideways and looked; she wrinkled her nose in frustration. Her breasts were not what you would say were, what’s the word, oh yea, plentiful. Who was she kidding? She barely needed a bra. Well, that kind of is a good thing, she consoled herself, because it means she didn’t sag. ‘At least that’s something to be grateful for’, she thought sarcastically. She cupped her breasts, taking their weight in her hands and just shook her head. Why would Max even want to be with her. She dropped her hands to her sides and sighed, there was nothing she could do about it. “I hope he’s not disappointed with me.” She mumbled. Liz put her tank on and then her khaki’s.

Liz quickly checked her hair to make sure it was how she wanted it. Once she was satisfied, she took out her lip-gloss and applied a fresh coat to her lips. ‘Never can be to prepared.’ She said to herself. She washed her hands and gave her appearance one more inspection and made her way out to rejoin Max.

While Liz had been in the bathroom, Max had the chance to look around. He was in Liz Parker’s bedroom. The thought alone made his head swim a little. Never in his wildest dreams, well, that’s not true. His wildest dreams involved Liz, her room and her waitress uniform. ‘Enough of that’ he cautioned himself, ‘don’t embarrass yourself any more than you usually do.’ His conscience reprimanded him.

Her room was the perfect extension of her essence. Her bed made, her desk so neat and orderly. Everything was in its place. The one thing that would have been easy to look over was the feminine side to the room. The soft colors and the whimsical decorations that were spread through out, gave it that uniqueness that he would recognize anywhere as Liz.

He just couldn’t help himself. He walked over to her bed and let his fingers drag along her pillow. This was where she laid her head while she slept. He could see her in his minds eye, how peaceful she looked, her lips slightly parted and moist. The steady rise and fall of her chest, her chest... His mind took a sharp left turn and he began to imagine what they must look like, so perfect, and firm. He had never seen a woman nude before, but he knew he didn’t like big breasts. He could picture how warm they would feel as he took them in his hands and squeezed them gently. He could envision her nipples, so red, getting firm as his fingers touched them. He wanted to….’Evans KNOCK IT OFF.’ Snapping back to reality he just knew she was perfect for him.

Max touched her pillow and again, wondering what felt like against his face, to inhale her scent. ‘No one will know, just for a second.’ With a quick glance to the bathroom door to make sure it was still closed, he bent down and gently pressed his face into her pillow, inhaling the scent, her scent. God he wished he could find some way to take that with him whenever Liz couldn’t be there.

Max didn’t hear the door to the bathroom open as Liz entered the room. She hadn’t meant to be overly quiet but that’s how it turned out. She stopped dead in her tracks as she watched Max pressing his face lightly into her pillow. He seemed to be, sniffing it. ‘Oh god, I hoped she hadn’t drooled last night.’ She thought mortified. But that’s when it hit her; she wasn’t the one sniffing the pillow. Liz didn’t want to embarrass him so she went back into the bathroom and made a bit of noise as she opened the door, she even gave him an few extra seconds.

When Liz came out of the bathroom, she tried hard not to giggle out loud. Max looked like he had gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar. His face was beet red and he was taking in large breaths. He had tripped slightly in his effort to move quickly away from the side of her bed.

“Max, are you all right?” She asked, trying hard to suppress the grin that wanted to take up residence on her lips.

“Um, yea, I… Um…. fine, I… yes.” He stammered incoherently.

Max closed his eyes and prayed for the ground to open up and swallow him. He had been caught. He knew it, Liz knew it. He would be surprised if the whole world didn’t know it. He knew that was exaggerating things, but it sure felt that way.

Liz walked over to him kissed him lightly on the cheek. After a quick smile, she picked up the take out bag and a thick blanket and went over to her window. Releasing the latch, she pushed it up and made her way out onto the balcony. She turned and watched as Max followed her out. She felt a wave of warmth move over her as she watched him move, he was just so sexy. She licked her lips unconsciously as she watched him.

“I’m hungry too.” Max commented to her.

“Huh?” She asked him, confused.

“You were licking your lips, you know, like your hungry for something you can’t wait to eat. I just said I was hungry too.” He explained in all seriousness to her.

‘If you only knew.’ She thought to herself.

Liz handed the blanket to Max for him to spread out near the telescope. They made themselves comfortable and side-by-side they began to dig into their meal. Liz couldn’t help wrinkling her nose as she watched Max douse his food with the Tabasco. They exchanged a few smiles as they ate. The first time Max offered her a fry, her hands had been messy, so she had him feed it to her. It was supposed to be an innocent gesture, but both of them felt their pulses skyrocket as he placed the food slowly into her mouth. Their eyes locked as he leisurely pulled his hand away. Max swallowed hard and tried to get himself under control.

“Um, Liz, can I tell you something? You promise not to laugh?” Max asked hesitantly.

Liz smiled softly at him, her eyes caressing him and making him feel safe, that he could tell her anything.

“Yes.” Was her simple reply.

“I, um… I think you’re very sexy.” He dipped his head and looked at her through his eyelashes. Max didn’t seem to realize when he did that he was irresistible.

Liz didn’t know what to say. She had not seen that coming, nor was she going to complain. All her doubts when she was in font of the mirror earlier vanished in a heartbeat. Max Evans thought that her, plain jane mousy Liz Parker, was sexy. Huh eat your heart Pam Troy. She felt her confidence soar at the words.

“Thank you.” She said, her eyes sparkling with happiness. “You’re not so bad yourself.” She whispered to herself, or so she thought.

They finished their meal and made their way over to the telescope and began to set everything up. They took turns finding constellations and looking at interesting star clusters.

“Do you think there’s anything out there?” Max asked from out of nowhere.

“I know there is.” She said confidently.

Max paused for a second, but recovered quickly. Thankfully she had been looking through the viewfinder at the time and he didn’t think she had noticed. Did she know something? Did she suspect?

“What makes you so sure?” He asked trying to sound nonchalant.

“Look up there, that would be an awful lot of wasted space if we’re all there is. I think that would just be sad.” She confessed.

“What would you do if you ever met someone, you know, from out there?” Max asked hesitantly. This was the answer that could devastate him. As much as he wanted to know, he didn’t the world they had created for themselves to come crashing down so quickly. He just wouldn’t be able to take it if she were to look at him with disgust, or worse yet, fear.

“I….” She started.

“I …would think it would be exciting. ” She said confidently, her eyes lighting up with possibilities.

“Really?” He asked incredulously.

“Really. There is so much to learn. Just because you travel through space doesn’t mean that you don’t have feelings. I’m sure that they experience emotions. I mean, you can’t just go running up and introduce yourself, because there always is the possibility of being hurt. < But, once you get to know them, to see them for who they are inside, what is there to be afraid of?” she finished softly.

“I guess your right, I never thought of it that way. I guess you get used to the movie version of aliens, that they are out to hurt everyone and takeover the planet. Sure those kinds might be out there, but there other kinds, those that would never hurt anyone, no matter what the price they would have to pay. They feel love and pain just like everyone else.”

“You talk like you’ve met them before.” Liz said thoughtfully.

Max shrugged his shoulders and looked back up at the stars. ‘If you only knew.’ He thought.

Liz looked over at Max and watched him as he starred off into the night sky. He was so handsome and he didn’t even know it. Liz silently made her way over to his side, letting her shoulder bump into his arm. Max looked down at her with a slight start and smirked at his own reaction. Liz wrapped her arm around his back. She continued to look up at him expectantly. Max finally got the hint and placed his around hers. He pulled her tight to him and sighed.

“I forget that I can put my arms around you sometimes. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this. To be able to touch you and kiss you.” He finished ducking his head shyly at his own naiveté.

“You know, if I was an alien, I would want to come to the this planet.” He said to the night air.

“Why’s that, the diversity of cultures and peoples?” she asked curiously.

Leave it to Liz to see the scientific side of it he chuckled to himself. That only confirmed what he was about to say.

“No, because of you.” He said reverently.

Liz felt the hot tickle of tears as they formed. She smiled sweetly up at him and rose up on her tiptoes to kiss his lips. She had meant it to only be a brief kiss, but her lips clung do his in defiance and Max nibbled at her lower lip. It was then that she gave into what she had wanted to do for the last hours. She turned her body to his and pulled him closer and she felt his arms go around her. Soft moan escaped her lips as Max traced her lower lip with his tongue asking to deepen their kiss. Liz relaxed completely into at that point and opened herself to him, heart body and soul. Their tongues met and dueled, first lightly and then with increasing intensity.

Max ran his hands up and down her back, needing to assure himself she was really there. The feel of her skin just under her baby tee was warm and hypnotizing. His hands never wanted to stop searching for new contours to discover. Liz moaned into his mouth at his tender touch, he made her feel so loved and precious, like she was the most important person in the world.

Max knew this was getting out of control quickly. They weren’t ready for anything more, but how he wanted to, his body was screaming for her. Max slowed the intensity of the kiss, much to Liz’s displeasure.

Max gently pulled back from the kiss and leaned his forehead against hers.

“Liz.” Max breathed.

“Oh Max.” She said, trying to calm herself down.

“Max, I don’t do things like this. I –“ She said self-consciously.

She didn’t want him to think that this was how she acted with just anybody. Max was special; he made her feel things that she had never experienced before. Some of those feelings frightened her in their intensity, but at the same time she couldn’t help but want to explore them.

“I know your not that type of person, you have too much self respect. ” Max reassured her.

Liz smiled gratefully at him. He really understood and respected her. She was so lucky to find someone like him. Everyday that passed she fell more and more in love with him. It was getting harder and harder not to say the words. She saw in a movie once that you should always wait for the guy to say I love you first. That way you know you have them.

Liz led them over to her lounge chair and motioned for him to sit back. Liz sat in between Max’s legs and settle back against his chest. She released a long breath and looked up at the stars. Max wrapped his arms around her middle and snuggled her a little closer. Liz placed her hands over top of his and relaxed into the moment. This was one of the moments when everything in the world is perfect. In moments like these you become afraid to breathe, that just the slightest thing will break the spell.

“They are beautiful up there.” Liz wondered aloud.

“But they’re not as beautiful as what I’ve got down here.” Max whispered to her.

Chapter 12.

“Maria, please?” Max begged her.

“Why me?” she asked distractedly.

“Because you’re really good at it.” He complimented her.

“Well, that’s true, but that is so not the point here. Did you ask -“ She started.

“She’s not that good. You were my first and only choice.” Max smiled charmingly at her.

“Okay, you got me. You can turn off the charm now.” She winked at him. “So, when do you want to do this?”

“The sooner the better, I really need the practice.” He pleaded.

“Okay, we can use Michaels apartment tonight. He has to work till close so we’ll have the place to ourselves.” She said, feeling satisfied with herself.

“Maria, promise me. You can’t tell anyone about this. Okay? Liz can never find out.” His eyes begged for her understanding on this. He didn’t want her to be disappointed in him.

“No problem. This is just you and me. See ya tonight, 8:00 o’clock..” Maria confirmed.

“8:00 o’clock. You’re the best.” Max gave Maria a fierce hug and then made his way out of the backroom, and into the caf

Maria just shook her head and giggled to herself. “This ought to be fun.” She smiled, amused at what tonight might bring. She finished getting ready and then entered the café to start her shift.

Nether Max or Maria noticed Liz coming from the prep area. When she had heard the voices, she didn’t want to intrude. But when she had heard Max’s voice, she just couldn’t help herself. Now she wished that she had. Liz fought back the tears as they threatened to come. The thought of Maria with her boyfriend made her physically ill. Boyfriend, well she could take care of that today. Why prolong the suffering. In one day she lost her boyfriend and her best friend. Could this day get any worse?

How could she have been so wrong about Max? She could feel his love for her when he was with her. Well maybe that was just it. He only feels it when he is near her; otherwise it’s out of sight, out of mind.

Liz went into the bathroom and checked her appearance. She splashed some cold water on her face. As she was drying herself off, she paused and looked at herself in the mirror. Why did she ever dare to think that she could be with someone like Max Evans anyway? taking one last look in the mirror, she made her way into the café and stopped by the waitress station.

She found him instantly, sitting at his favorite booth. Well, she had to be strong. Just get this over with and try to move on. She knew that was going to be near to impossible, you only have one other half, but if he could do this was he really the one? Steadying herself, she walked over to the booth where Max sat.

“Hi Max.” she greeted him as calmly as she could.

“Hey.” Max thought it was a little weird that she didn’t kiss him hello. Maybe she was just feeling shy now. He reached out his hand to take hers and she backed a little away.

“Liz?” He asked, worry evident in his voice.

“Um, can I talk to you for a second?” she asked stone-faced.

“Um, sure. Do you want to go somewhere?” he asked tentatively.

“No, here is fine. There’s no one hear yet anyways.” She took breath. “Max, I don’t think things are going to work out between us. So we shouldn’t be seeing each other anymore.” She said calmly, inside, her heart was just withering away.

Max just sat there. He didn’t know what to think, last night had been so wonderful. Now his whole world was falling apart. Max swallowed back the lump in his throat that was threatening to choke him. He tried to push back the tears that he knew were coming, but a few escaped and stained his devastated features.

“If this is what you want.” He replied lifelessly.

‘Why was he acting this way?’ Liz thought, ‘He must just be upset that he got caught.’

“I’m positive. Good Bye Max.” She turned and almost bumped into Maria as she was making her way over to say hi. “Excuse me Maria.” She said emotionlessly, and brushed past her slowly and headed for the back room.

Max’s face had gone completely white. ‘So this is what it feels like to have a broken heart.’ He thought wryly. He never wanted this feeling again. Without a second glance at anyone, he placed some money on the table and made his way to the door.

Before he stepped out, he called out to Maria. She stopped and turned around from where she had just caught up with Liz in the middle of the café.

“I’m not going to need those dancing lessons after all, thanks though.” He said without emotion.

Max was out of the door before either girl could react. The last twenty minutes had been a mind-numbing blur. He had to get away, anywhere but here. He needed to think about what had happened, where he went wrong.

Liz felt the icy fingers of fear creep up her spine. The day had just gotten worse. She turned and walked back over to Maria.

“Dancing lessons?” She asked hesitantly.

“Yes, for you, he didn’t know how. Why? What happened?” Maria asked her; she just couldn’t understand what was going on.

Liz’s world started to shift a little as the floor began to move out from under her. Maria grabbed her and steadied her. She took Liz’s hand and led her over to a booth to sit down.

“Liz, what just happened? Spill girlfriend.” Maria coaxed softly.

“What have I done, I messed everything up. I should have known that Max would never do anything to hurt me. Why was I so stupid.” Liz berated herself.

“Liz, you’re not making any sense. Deep breathes, okay, good. Now from the beginning sweetie.” She smiled sympathetically.

Liz couldn’t help but see the irony in the whole situation. Here Maria was comforting her, when not just five minutes ago she thought that Maria was betraying her.

“Maria, I heard you and Max talking in the back a little while ago, you were arranging to meet at Michael’s apartment, alone. Max said that I couldn’t know. I, oh I’m such an idiot.” She bemoaned herself and put her head in her hands.

“You though Max and I? Well, he is a very fine piece of man, but I have somebody that I love very much. Shh…. You’ll get through this, you just have to go talk to him. This is Max we are talking about here. He worships you. Just talk to him.” Maria said confidently.

“Thanks, you’re not mad at me?” She asked tentatively.

“I’m pissed as hell, but I’m not the one you need to worry about first. Go. Fix this with lover boy, and don’t give up until you have.” Maria advised her. “Oh, and tell him I’ll still give him the dancing lessons if he wants them.” Maria winked at her and pushed her on her way.

Liz had a mission. To get Max Evans back.

Chapter 13.

“Mom, I’m going camping for a few days, out at Frazier woods. Okay?” He called from his room.

“Max, what about school on Monday, you can’t just skip?” Diane Evans warned him.

“They’re having those parent teacher conferences on Monday and Tuesday so there’s no school.” He reminded her.

“That’s right, I never have to go to those things so it slipped my mind.” She reasoned.
“Its fine with me honey, but just make sure with your father.”

“Thanks mom, I will.”

Max hurriedly put together a backpack of clothes and gathered the camping gear out of the garage. After getting everything situated in the ‘Bob’, he needed to grab some food supplies and he would be on his way.

Grabbing what he needed he gave his mom a quick kiss goodbye and headed out the door. Stowing the last of the provisions, he started up the jeep and backed out into the street. Giving a quick glance back at where he knew the Crashdown and Liz to be, he concentrated on the road ahead and took off.

Max loved camping. It helped him relax when it felt like the world was closing in on him. At this point it felt like it had outright crushed him. What had he done? He was attentive, complimented her, spent quality time together, everything. What happened?

He knew he shouldn’t be thinking of that stuff now. He had all the time in the world once he got there, five days out on his own. He had never gone off on his own like this before, but it was time he started growing up. The world is cruel sometimes and he no longer wanted to look at it with the eyes of a kid.

The miles drifted by as Max drove into the evening sun. He had been driving now for almost an hour. In another thirty minutes he would be there. He tried to keep himself busy so he wouldn’t think about Liz, but that would be like asking him not to breathe. He just couldn’t understand what had happened.

Then it dawned on him…she knows. Does she?

Who would have told her? Maria and Alex were the only two who might do that. In a way he half expected her to already know. Best friends share everything. I mean if your going to discuss an intimate sexual experience with someone, confiding that you know an alien isn’t far behind.

These were all just big ifs. Nothing was definite. The only person who knew the reasons why, didn’t want anything to do with him. It was just so frustrating, one minute you’re in the arms of the love of your life and then you get kicked to the curb. Maybe she met somebody new? That thought just twisted the knife in his heart another full turn.

The questions were endless and he had no answers. Time was all he had a lot of now, time.

Max pulled into the camp area and arranged for a site deep in the back. He wanted solitude, time alone to think and figure out what he was going to do next. He built a large part of his life around Liz. Most of his waking moments were about her in some way or another, now that one star the he had navigated his entire life by had winked out. It left him adrift in waters that he had no way of finding home in.

Max shook his head to clear the morbid thoughts of his dead relationship to Liz. He had plenty of time to wallow in that later tonight after he got camp set up. He set about unpacking the jeep and getting his gear organized. It took him no time at all to get the tent set up and his clothes and sleeping situated.

It was past dinnertime by now, he had to admit that he didn’t feel much like eating but he had to. His heart might be broken but he couldn’t let his body follow suit. Max knew it was going to be a struggle, probably for a long time to try and move on from here. The thought of seeing Liz with someone else tore him up; he felt immeasurable rage and tearing despair. Beyond all of that, they were still alb partners. How would they act towards each other? He knew it would be uncomfortable but would they ever get beyond this?

Max wasn’t really in the mood to make a heavy dinner so he opted for some sandwiches and salad. The food had little to no taste to it, but it wasn’t from lack of Tabasco.

‘Stop this! Pull yourself together, its going to take time, just hang in there.’ He steeled himself.

After sitting around the campfire for a little while, he decided he was going to call it a night. He wanted to get up early and get some time on the trails in this area of the park. This section was near the old Indian reservation, so he might be able to find an arrowhead or something like that. ‘Liz would lo—‘ he had to stop doing that. She wasn’t here, that was his reality.

Liz made her way as quickly as she could to Max’s house. She had to apologize; she had just reacted and didn’t think about the validity of it. She mentally kicked her own ass, not to do that ever again. Only hearing part of a conversation can blow up in your face, today was case and point.

It had taken her half an hour to escape the Crashdown before she was finally on her way. Maria let her borrow her jetta to make the five-minute trip to Max’s house. Pulling into the driveway she noticed that Max’s jeep was missing. ‘Isabelle probably went over to Alex’s’ She reasoned to herself.

Jumping out of the car, she walked up to the front door and knocked.

“Hell- Liz, how nice to see you.” Diane Evans greeted her.

“Hi Mrs. Evans, is Max here?” Liz asked hopefully.

“I’m sorry, you just missed him. He left about ten minutes ago.” Max’s mom answered apologetically.

“Okay, thank you.” She said a little dejectedly.

“You’re welcome, we should have you over for dinner soon. Liz, please remind that crazy son of mine about his manners.” She said with a smirk.

“I will. Thanks again.” She said as she turned to leave. “I’ll just try over at Michaels.”

“I’m afraid you won’t find him there either.” Mrs. Evans said, effectively stopping Liz in her tracks. She turned around slowly.

“Did he say where he might be?” Liz asked hopefully.

“You mean he didn’t tell you? I’ll talk to him a bout being a better boyfriend too.” She said with a wink not knowing how painful her comment had really been. “He went camping for a few days, out at Frazier woods.”

“Oh, thanks.” Liz said dejectedly.

“Is everything okay dear?” Mrs. Evans asked softly.

“It will be.” She said with little smile.

Liz went back to Crashdown and ventured up to her room to think. She had to get a plan together; she had to get to Frazier woods and more importantly, Max.

Chapter 14.

Liz begged and pleaded with her mother to let her borrow their second car to go find Max. She said that they had had a misunderstanding and she wanted to talk to him as soon as possible.

“You really need to go all the way there?” Her mom asked curiously.

“Mom, its really important. You know I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t. I really need to talk him but he’s not answering his cell. I’m worried. Please mom? Please?” She begged.

This was new for Liz, her mom was not used to seeing her like this. Both Nancy and Jeff Parker knew that the two of them really cared about each other. They had seen them watch each other over the years, so they knew it wasn’t some passing phase. That both worried and reassured Nancy, sometimes you just can’t win everything.

“I want you to take your cell, I’ll talk to your father and let him know where you are. I want you back here before 9:00 tonight. Understood?” Nancy conceded.

“Thanks mom, you’re the best.” Liz exclaimed as she hugged her mother.

Liz arrived at Frazier woods a while later and made her way to the registration building. Everyone had to come there to get their campsite. Within five minutes she had the location of his site and was on her way. She only hoped that he would be there.

Max had been out on the trails for a few hours now, the scenery had been great, but he hadn’t found anything very interesting. That was until he found a cave about a quarter mile off of the trail. Max didn’t know what drew him there, but it was like an unseen hand, giving him little pushes as he went. The closer he seemed to get the stronger the push.

Moving aside the brush, he made his way into the mouth of the cave. There’s no way anyone would ever have found this place unless they knew it existed. Once Max had ventured only a few feet into the cave, light became very scarce. Concentrating on a spot a few inches above his hand, he focused his energy into a glowing white light. It was just enough for him to be able to see ten to twenty feet in front of him, it wasn’t much, but it was something.

Max traveled deeper into the cave, the pull on his being increasing. It wasn’t that he couldn’t ignore it; it was a like a slight hum inside his mind, like he recognized something, or more than likely, something recognized him.

The cave suddenly opened up into a larger chamber, the light from his hand filled the larger room. Shadows danced on the walls as he moved around the room. Halfway in, along the left hand wall, he found it. They were cave paintings, but not like anything he had ever seen before, they looked otherworldly. Embedded in the middle of the drawings were five amber colored stones, each one looked to be about the size of a large egg. The stones were arranged in the shape of a ‘V’. With his hand, Max traced some of the lines of the drawing,, they seemed familiar, like he should know what they meant but it was just out of reach. As his hand passed near to one of the stones, it began to glow in a soft rich light. He pulled his hand back and the light dimmed. He reached forward hesitantly, and touched one of the stones. There was no heat there but he felt a tingle inside, like an acknowledgment of their energies. As he ran his fingers over the stone, he felt it move slightly. Testing it, he was able to remove it from the wall, the others quickly followed. Max carefully placed the stones into his backpack and took out a pad and began sketching the designs on the wall.

Max looked at his watch and was surprised to find that a couple of hours had passed since he entered the cave. No wonder he felt so hungry. He grabbed the granola bar he had brought with him to tide him over till he could get back to camp. He started back as he consumed his impromptu lunch, the excitement of his find at the forefront of his mind.

This discovery has huge. It was one of the first links they had to who they were, what they were. He needed to get back and let the others know about this. The more he thought about it, maybe it was their way to find out how to get back to where they came from. Would they even want to?

It was almost 2:00 PM by the time Max made it back to his campsite. As he neared it, he saw an unfamiliar car parked next to his jeep. Looking around quickly, he saw no one in the area. When he got a little bit closer, he heard someone inside of his tent, he couldn’t tell what they were doing, but they were going to be sorry they ever went in there.

Max was careful not to let his shadow fall on the side of the tent to give him away. He circled around to the front and crept up slowly to the unzipped front flap. Quietly, he pulled it back and peered in, he saw someone bent over, on their knees doing something in the tent. They were facing away so it gave him the element of surprise. The person was kind of short, with a denim jacket and a baseball hat on their head. In one quick motion he came up behind them and tackled them to the ground. Max heard a somewhat familiar squeak from the person now lying under him.

“Don’t hurt me, please don’t hurt me.” She pleaded.

“Liz?” he asked incredulously.

“Max?” She said with relief.

Max lifted up a little to take his weight off of her. Liz turned over quickly before Max got up fully and grabbed him by the collar of his jacket. She pulled him down until his lips met hers in a fierce kiss. Liz wasn’t usually aggressive but she wasn’t going to take any chances. She wanted her Max back and she going to make sure that nothing stood in the way of that.

“Max, I’m so, so sorry.” She said between kisses, as she peppered his face with non-stop affection. “Please forgive me?” she pleaded breathlessly.

Max took hold of Liz by the shoulders and gently pulled back from him. He looked at her with confusion written all over his face. He needed to know what was happening.

“Liz, what did I do wrong?” He asked, the anguish apparent in his voice.

“Sweetheart you didn’t do anything wrong. It was my fault. I overheard you and Maria making plans for tonight and I panicked. I’m so sorry, I don’t know what I was thinking.” She said, tears finally taking over by the time she had finished.

“Liz I would never want anything with Maria, besides Michael’s one of my best friends. I would never do anything like that to a friend.” He said gently to her.

Max helped Liz sit up and gently wiped the tears away from her cheeks. In a way he could understand why she did what she did. Max knew that they were both pretty shy people and with that, brings insecurities. The questions bombard you all of the time, like am I good enough? Why are they with me? What do they see in me? All sorts of things will race through your mind. Max had felt all of those same fears, and it only takes one little thing for them to take hold and start to eat away at you.

Liz looked up at him with eyes so full emotion. He saw love and fear reflected there, he hated being the cause of that. Max cupped both her cheeks and rubbed his thumbs along her cheekbone.

“Liz, its okay.” He said gently.

Liz lit up like a Christmas tree. She threw her arms around him and pulled him close, never wanting to let him go. Max put his arms around her, and just took the simple pleasure in having her back where he never thought she would be again. He placed little kisses on the top of her head as one hand sifted through her silky hair.

Liz pulled back from just enough to look into his eyes those soulful eyes that she loved. She traced her hand down the hard line of his jaw. It funny how much you appreciate something when you’ve thought you’ve lost it. Liz wanted to memorize everything, every moment of the day.

“Max, I am so sorry. I was afraid. I know I should have come and asked you. I was just so scared, I don’t really know what you see in me.” She said sadly.

“Liz, Yes you should have come to me. Promise me in the future, you will if you’re ever worried or concerned. Okay?” he said as he lifted her chin with his finger.

“In the future?” She asked hopefully, her eyes sparkling like diamonds.

“Well you don’t think I’m going to just let you go do you?” He asked her playfully.

“I don’t want you to ever let me go.” She said as she leaned in and gently touched her lips to his. The kiss started slow, both of them still tentative. Slowly, Max brushed his lips against hers, just enjoying the feel of her lips on his again. He felt Liz’s tongue run along the crease of his lips, asking for entry to his warm mouth. Max let her control the kiss and followed her lead; happy to go where ever she took them. As she deepened the kiss, she couldn’t help the little moans that were being drawn from deep inside her.

“Oh Liz.” Max said as they took a breath of air for their burning lungs.

Liz rose up higher on her knees and brought her body flush with his. She could feel the hard muscles of his thighs and chest as she pressed nearer to him. Her heart was pounding in her chest, keeping perfect time with Max’s. She pulled herself towards him. This time Max met her half way, crashing his lips onto hers, taking them and devouring them for his own. Their tongues dueled with abandon; both of them enjoying the velvety feel as they brushed hungrily against each other. Max caressed the exposed skin of her lower back where her shirt had ridden up. Liz moaned as she felt him glide his hands under her shirt and up her back. His hands were so warm and gentle. She could only imagine them on other parts of her body. That’s when reality came crashing back in.

“Max.” she said to him, breathlessly, between little kisses.

“Hmm.” He mumbled.

“We…uh…have to slo uh slow down.” She barely got out, as his lips were disparate on her neck.

“I love your neck, you taste so good.” He moaned to her.

“Hmm, so do you.” She purred, almost letting herself get lost again in the passion filled haze he was surrounding them in. She regretfully pulled slowly away from him and rested her forehead against his. “So where back together?” She whispered hopefully.

“Well, I only kiss my girlfriend.” He said with a little smile, trying to lighten the mood.

Liz giggled and laid her head on his shoulder, both of them just enjoying the moment. Reticent to break the moment, Max pulled back and looked into her eyes.

“We’re okay now?” He said softly.

Liz nodded her head and gave him a shy smile; her eyes dropped away from his as the blush covered her cheeks.

“God you are so adorable, I love you.” Max said without even realizing it. It just felt right, like this was the moment.

Liz’s eyes grew round as the air rushed out of her lungs. He said it. He told her that he loved her. Her heart started pounding as she felt a warm rush of emotion course through her. Her palms grew damp and her hands started to tremble slightly. This was the most incredible feeling Liz had ever experienced. She was even more excited because it happened with Max, the boy she had pined away for, for so many years. She had dreamed of this moment, and now it was finally happening.

“Liz are you okay?” He asked, concerned by all of the emotions playing over her beautiful features.

“I’m wonderful.” She said breathily. Her eyes took on a dreamy quality as she looked up at him. Liz took a deep breath and said the one thing she had dreamed about telling him for so long now. “I love you too.” She said softly, stroking his cheek in a gentle caress.

That’s when it dawned on him what he had said. Now it was Liz’s turn to watch as Max experienced how incredible hearing those words could be. His eyes gleamed so bright, the little flecks of gold seemed to ignite and flash against their amber backdrop.

For a few long moments, they both just sat there, listening to each other breathe. The moment had taken them to a new place, a better place where the seeds of confidence will grow and be nurtured.

The sound of Liz’s cell phone cleared the haze and brought them back to earth. Sheepishly, Liz picked up her purse and took out the invasive device.

“Hello?…. Yea mom….yes I found him….I’ll be leaving soon…okay….you too….bye.”

Closing the lid of her cell, she looked at Max regretfully.

“That was my mom, I have to head back before it gets to late.” She said dejectedly.

“That’s okay, I’m coming back tonight anyways. Maybe I could see you later?” He asked hopefully.

She wrapped her arms around his waist and drew him close.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” She said as she claimed his lips once more before the long ride back.

Chapter 15.

Max knew that he had to tell Liz about his otherworldly status soon. He just didn’t know how. What would she think of him? Would she run screaming? Would she think of him as some kind of freak? So many fears ran through his mind. He had just been allowed to realize one of his dreams and he didn’t want it to disappear so quickly.

He believed in Liz, she was a warm, caring, and understanding person. She wouldn’t hurt him, but even though he knew that, it still didn’t reduce his anxiety to admit this to her. Trusting her never even entered into this, he knew without a doubt that she would keep this secret. Maria and Alex, both had handled it and they had never wavered once.

He heard a knock on his door as he lay there deep in his thoughts.

“Yea?” He called.

“Max, it’s me. Can I come in?” Isabelle asked.

“Sure.” He said a little tiredly.

Isabelle came in a shut the door behind her, she took in the sight of her brother. This was such a switch from the happy person she had seen earlier with Liz. She wasn’t surprised at how much Liz affected him. She knew what type of influence Alex had in her life, how he had made every thing seem just a little bit better. It saddened her to see him like this; she just needed to find out what this was about.

“What’s going on Max? Trouble with Liz?” she asked as she sat down on the edge of his bed.

Max sighed. “Yes, No, I don’t know.” He lamented.

“Okay, that’s real helpful. Max tell me what’s wrong, maybe I can help.” She offered.

“Liz doesn’t know about me.” He said sadly.

“Max, you two have only been together for a couple weeks. Of course she doesn’t know a lot about you.” She replied soothingly.

“Iz, that’s not what I mean. I mean the alien stuff.” He whispered dejectedly.

“Oh!” Isabelle said, the situation coming into focus now.

She thought back to how nervous she had been about confiding in Alex at first. She had followed her instincts when it came to him, and everything said she could trust him. She had never been more right in her life. She knew that Liz would react the same way. She had gotten to know Liz pretty good over the last year. She really liked her; she was the perfect match for Max.

“How did you do it?” He asked hopefully.

“Well, I just asked him what he thought about the subject. Things like ‘Did he believe in them?’ and ‘If they existed and looked like us what would he do?’. I took his answers and went from there.” Isabelle paused thoughtfully. “Max, there is no right way to tell her but you know you have to. I trust Liz; she’s a good friend. She’ll be okay.” She said as she patted her brother’s shoulder.

“Thanks. Is, both you and Michael went through this, and it was okay. Although I do have to say, out of the three of us, Michael got the raw end of the deal.” He said chuckling.

“Max you’ll do fine. Just be yourself, let fate take care of the rest. She loves you. We all can see it. Now go.” Isabelle said as she opened his door

“Thanks Iz.” He said gratefully.

Michael had told how Maria had reacted. She had shrieked, like an electric current had zapped her. Then she got pissed, really pissed. But after a few minutes she had calmed down and had asked so many questions. It had been hard to have to admit you don’t know too much about yourself, that you didn’t know where your family was. But Maria had been great and told him that she would be his family.

Max picked up the phone and dialed the number he had memorized long, long ago. When you have an obsession about someone you find out a lot about them. He had picked up the phone a hundred times over the years, put he could never even get the courage to punch the first number. The phone rang a couple times before he heard the voice of his angel.

“Hello?” She said softly.

“Hi Liz, it’s me, um, Max.” he said to make sure she knew.

“Max, I knew it was you.” She said sweetly. “What’re you up to?”

“Not much. Liz I’ve been thinking about some things and …I…. um…I need to talk to you.” He tried keeping his nervousness and fear out of his voice, but he wasn’t doing a great job.

Liz felt the air rush out her lungs. ‘I need to talk to you.’ Those words are never followed by anything good. Oh god. Maybe he’s changed his mind about prom, or maybe he doesn’t want to be with me anymore. Maybe now that he’s getting to know me he doesn’t really like me. Kind of like the dream is always better than the real thing. Liz closed her eyes tightly for a few seconds and tried to calm her racing heart.

“Um Liz, are you there?” Max asked tentatively.

“Oh…I’m sorry Max. um, sure. When would you like to talk?” Her voice trembled slightly, her chin starting to quiver.

“How about in half an hour?” he asked cautiously.

“Okay, we can talk on my balcony if you like?” she offered. ‘Better to be near my pillow so I can cry into it.’ She thought tearfully.

“That’s sounds great. And Liz?”

“Yea Max?”

“Thank you for being understanding. I’ll see you in a few minutes.”

“Okay, bye Max.” She said into the phone.

Liz hung up the phone and slowly sat down onto her bed. She had to pull herself together. Why was she thinking the worst? To be honest, it had everything to do with the way Max was acting. He seemed sad, almost sorrowful. Like he was about to hurt somebody that he didn’t want to. She quickly swiped the tears that had escaped her eyes and made her way into her bathroom. She splashed some cool water on her face and padded her cheeks dry. She didn’t want face him with red swollen eyes. There was plenty of time for that later,

Liz brushed out her hair and looked at herself in the mirror. She could do this. They were going to be okay. They had straightened everything out about the dancing lesson. Last week. They had come back from Frazier woods and had spent a nice evening on her balcony. They had even danced to a few songs. Max was a wonderful dancer; he had nothing to worry about.

Liz came out of her bathroom and looked at the clock on her stand.

“Oh my god, he’s probably out there.” She cursed to herself.

Liz quickly went over to her window and stepped outside into the warm night. She looked up briefly at the stars, at how beautiful it all was, peaceful.

“Liz...” she heard faintly from over her balcony ledge.

Liz hurried over to the ledge and peered down. There he was, the love of her life. The one she had thought she would never get the chance to know, to know his touch, his kiss, to him I love you.

“Liz…can I come up?” He asked so softly, tentatively.

Chapter 16.

“Yes.” She tried not to sound nervous but her voice trembled at the end.

Max climbed up the ladder quickly and hopped over the ledge on to the balcony. In two long strides he stood before, looking down into her dark and soulful eyes.

“Hey.” He said softly.

“Hey.” She echoed.

“Are you okay?” Max asked her, placing his hand on her cheek to try and give her comfort.

“I guess I’m a little nervous.” She admitted hesitantly.

“Do you want to talk about it?” He asked.

“It’s just your phone call, I’m worried what you might say.” She turned around and waked over to her lounge chair and sat down heavily. “I know you said that you forgave me for the Maria thing but I wouldn’t blame you if you were still hurt.” Her bottom lip started to tremble.

“Liz …” Max tried to reassure her.

“I didn’t trust you and I should have. I had no reason not to. I’m so sorry I let you down.” She lost the battle with her emotions and couldn’t stop the silent tears from falling to the ground.

Max walked over to her quickly and knelt down beside her. He took her hands in his and gave them a little shake to bring her attention to his face. His eye’s held nothing but love there, love for the one girl who he would forgive anything.

“Liz, I love you.” He said softly.

Liz started to shake her head. Max tenderly reached up and cupped her cheek to stop her. Liz was unable to stop herself from leaning into the gentle caress.

“I love you. You were scared. It happens sometimes, but its okay. We’re all right now. Remember our promise, we’ll always come to each other if there is ever any doubt. Okay?” He prompted her soothingly.

Liz mutely nodded her head and a small smile started to make its way to her lips. She leaned forward the last few inches and paced a loving kiss on his lips. The feel of them against hers stirred her blood and quickened her pulse. This was a feeling she was never, ever going to grow tired of. Liz slowly released his lips and took a breath to steady herself. She laid her forehead against his in that way they always do. Sharing each other’s air, sharing each other’s touch.

“I love you.” She told him in an emphatic whisper.

Max gave her arms a reassuring squeeze and then got up and walked a few feet away. He turned to her with something in his eyes Liz couldn’t quite place. That feeling of worry started to creep slowly back into her heart.

“Max?” She asked hesitantly.

“Liz, I have to tell you something.” He as he took a deep breath.

Liz looked up at him with expectant eyes. Their depths were full of love, trust, worry and fear.

“I’m not from around here.” He said carefully.

“I know...” She asked breathlessly.

Max continued oblivious to her response.

“No Liz, you don’t understand. I don’t mean about the adoption stuff.” He sighed, running an agitated hand through his dark hair.

Why couldn’t this be easy?

“Liz, remember how we were talking about life from out there?” He asked, gesturing to the brilliant night sky. A sky that held so many secrets, and until now the he was about to reveal.

Liz smiled at the memory.” I remember.” She said calmly. She got up from the lounge and walked over to Max. She took his hands in hers and gave them a reassuring squeeze. Willing him to go on.

“Liz.” He closed his eyes and took the step there was no turning back from. “I’m from out there. Somewhere. We don’t know.”

Max opened his eyes and saw her beautiful face. It wasn’t full of fear or revulsion but held tenderness and peace, her eyes weren’t wide with terror or fear, they held love and understanding. Max was unsure what to think by her reaction. This was not like either of the experiences Michael and Isabelle told him about. This was almost like …complete acceptance. She felt the gentle squeeze again on his hands telling him it was okay to go on.

“We think we’re from the crash of 47’. We were in these pod type things and we came out of them in 1983. We can do things that you can’t do. We can manipulate molecular structures and I can heal things.”

Max just looked down at her, she had yet to say a word. Was she in shock?

“Liz?” he prompted her.

Liz pulled him forward and stepped close to his body, she rose up on her tiptoes and tilted her face up to him, her eyes calling to him. Max bent his head and brushed his lips in a whisper across hers. it was just the faintest of touches but it wasn’t enough. Liz took her hand from his and placed it behind his neck. She ran her fingers through the short hair there and started to pull him towards her eager mouth. There lips met and a liquid heat began to spread through their bodies. All of the barriers were gone now. There were no more secrets save the small one Liz still held.

Liz brushed her lips with increased fervor on his, her tongue peaking out to nudge his lips apart. He longed to feel his tongue slide against hers, to have him make love to her mouth. His lips parted and Liz entered with passion-induced insistence. She sought out his tongue and swirled hers around it, dancing with him and challenging him to chase her. Max wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her body flush to his, her soft curves molding themselves completely to his solid form. They both tilted their heads a little more to deepen the kiss further, both wanting to crawl deep inside of the other, never to emerge again.

That’s’ when the flashes started.

* Liz playing in the school yard in third grade *

* The first day of lab in 9th grade when they were assigned as lab partners. *

* Max sitting at his desk, pouring his heart in a letter he had almost never given her *

* Max placing the note inside her locker *

* Max nervous but excited the next day a t biology class. *

* Max kissing Liz for the first time out at the quarry *

Max pulled back quickly. He knew what had happened, Michael and Isabelle had warned him of this. Isabelle had told him that if he let himself go, completely go, and she did the same; Liz would receive flashes from him.

“Max?” She looked up at him, still breathless from their kiss.

“Liz I …” Max stammered.

“Max, I saw you, I felt what you were feeling. It was…” She said dreamily.

He looked at Liz with tears growing in his eyes. This was it. This was the moment that he feared the dream would end.

He looked down into Liz’s wide eyes. They were so beautiful; he had loved looking into them, to have them staring back. He saw the fine dew of tears forming, ready to spill down her cheeks. Max wanted to so badly reach out and wipe them away.

“…it was beautiful.” Her eyes sparkled with such fire and love it took his breath away. Was this really happening?

“Liz, I …” Liz raised her fingers to his lips to still them.

“Max, I’ve known. All along that you were special.” She said as she caressed his cheek, trying to reassure him of her love. “I didn’t say anything because I knew this was something you had to do. You had to trust me. I’m just so happy that you do.”

“You knew?” he asked a little shocked.

Liz’s face fell; maybe she should have been honest with him from the start. Maybe it would have eased his fears. Liz slowly nodded her head, her eyes begged him to not hate her.

“Liz, I…you’re right. I did have to trust you, on my own.” He smiled a little wryly at her. a half smile played at the corner of his mouth. “So it seems we both had one last secret. I never would have guessed it would be the same one.”

Liz looked at him curiously.

“That we both know that aliens exist.” He said with a small smile.

“All I know is that this girl loves this boy, “ She placed her hand on his chest. “ the rest just doesn’t matter.” She said as she pulled him down to taste his lips.

Now I'm going to take a break...

Chapter 17.

Of all the ways he had thought that tonight might have played out, this was not one of them. He had no idea that Liz even knew anything about his alien heritage. That little fact in and of itself, showed how much she could be trusted. But Max didn’t need that to know. All he had to do was look into her eyes and he saw everything. Her saw heart, her soul, and her love.

Max arrived at home around 10:00 o’clock from his talk with Liz. He couldn’t even begin to describe the feelings of relief and happiness coursing through him. She loved him no matter what. She loved him. The thought kept echoing through his mind. He was so very lucky to have her in his life, he was never going to let her forget that.

Max walked down the hall towards his room when he passed Isabelle’s and saw her light was still on. Max knocked softly.

“Is? You still up?” Max asked is a hushed voice.

“Come in.” She called to him.

Max opened the door and shutting it behind, sat on the edge of her bed. Isabelle knew that everything went okay by the goofy grin her brother was wearing. She would bet that he would have that look for at least a week.

“It went good?” Iz prompted him.

“Very good, beyond good, extremely good, wond-“ He ranted happily before Isabelle cut him off.

“All right, all right. We have established it was good.” She smirked at him.

Max started to pace around the room. His adrenalin was pumping from his excitement about Liz. Suddenly he stopped his pacing and stood in front of Isabelle.

“Isabelle, she already knew.” He said as calmly as he could. He had been so wrapped up in Liz and getting through telling her that he hadn’t even batted an eye at that. He had acted almost as if that’s how it should have always been.

Isabelle looked up quickly at him. Max’s face was a mask of concern and worry.

“Did she say who told her?” Isabelle asked nervously.

“I didn’t ask her. I was just so happy that Liz didn’t shut me out. Or think I was a freak or something. But if she knows about me, then she has to know about you and Michael.” Max’s brain was starting to spin with all of the possibilities.

“Maybe someone overheard one us talking.” He wondered out load.

Isabelle shook her head, “I really doubt that.”

“Well, maybe she saw one of us use our powers. Maybe she saw Michael do something in the kitchen.” He said as he started pacing again.

“Michael didn’t do anything in the kitchen. Max, will you please stop doing that.” Isabelle asked slightly irritated.

“What?’ He asked a he made another pass.

“THAT!” She said to him, pointing at his pacing.

Max stopped and shoved his hands into his pockets. “Sorry.” He said sheepishly.

“Thank you.” She said as she went back to doing her nails.

“Isabelle this is serious. Some how she found out. Do you think it was Maria or Alex?” he asked carefully.

Isabelle fixed him with a miniature ice-princess look before going back to her nails.

“Sorry.” He said quickly.

Max started to think about the possibilities. Some how Liz was told about them. Maybe it was in the best friend code of ethics that you have to share news like that. Max shook his head, ‘There could have been so many different ways she cou-‘ he was thinking when he saw it.

Isabelle was cool as a cucumber about this. Normally she would have been very upset. The pieces started to fall into place, one by one; it was all starting to make sense.

“Max, don’t blow a circuit over there.” She ribbed him.

“Isabelle, so Michael didn’t tell her, Maria or Alex either, and you didn’t right?” he asked her carefully.

“Right I didn’t say anything to her.” She confirmed.

“Isabelle, our very existence could be threatened and you haven’t stopped casually doing your nails once. I can play word games with you all night.” He said with a warning tone.

“What do you want me to do?” She asked a little defensively.

“So, none of you said –“ He stopped himself short.

“You guys showed her, didn’t you?” He said slowly.

The file in Isabelle’s hand stopped mid stroke at his words, “Why do you say that?” She asked with a hint of trepidation in her voice.

“Why didn’t you guys tell me she knew? God Isabelle. How could you do that to me?” He asked heatedly.

“Max, you had to do this for yourself, you know that. Either Maria or Alex would have eventually spilled. Liz isn’t stupid Max. She would have figured it out.” She rationalized.

Max glared at her. She did have a point that he did have to conquer this fear on his own. He had to know for himself, that he felt that much trust in her. Max shook his head ruefully. She’s known all this time. He wanted to kick himself for not trusting in his instincts sooner.

“We’re you guys ever going to tell me? I mean this is my senior year. I lost so much time with her.” He asked dejectedly.

“Who are you kidding?” She asked incredulously. “You two will be married and poppin out martians by the time your twenty.” She said with a snort.

Max narrowed his eyes at her.

“Don’t you look at me like that mister. Go ahead, deny it.” She said defiantly.

Max started to open his mouth but snapped it shut. He had to be honest with himself. He did want to marry Liz and he did want children with her. But, would that be even possible? Well that would have top be something that they would figure out.

Max gave Isabelle one last glare and then made his way to the door. Opening it, he turned to her and gave her a little smile.

“Isabelle thanks. It was something that I had to do on my own.” He said thoughtfully.

“Max, I love you. Just so you know, we wouldn’t have been so cruel as to never tell you. We all know that the two of you are meant to be together. She loves you. We all can see it, I’m just happy you guys finally figured it out too.” she said with a reassuring smile.

“Night Iz.”

Night little brother.”

Chapter 18.

The next day had been a bit of a blur for Max. He was still trying to process the fact that Liz had known all of this time. He just shook his head at the thought. He wasn’t going to waste anymore time where they were concerned.

Max had stopped by Liz’s locker before lunch so that they could walk together. The feeling of having her hand in his was beyond anything he could ever describe. When their hands touched he felt a tiny shock of energy, it was like they had completed an electric circuit. He had more confidence, and strength around her. He had the feeling deep inside that they were meant to work as a team, more than in the sense of boyfriend and girlfriend, more like halves making a whole.

The rest of day, thankfully, seemed to speed by. At the final bell, Max had met Liz and they went to his jeep to head out to the quarry for the meeting. This was going to be a new experience for Liz. Knowing the guy of your dreams is an alien is one thing, but to actually have him for your boyfriend and to go to a meeting on things alien was quite different.

“Max, this is a little surreal.” Liz said thoughtfully as she turned in her seat to look at him.

Max happened a glance over at her and his breath caught in his throat. Her hair was blowing wildly around her face, surrounding it in an ever-changing frame of dark tresses. Her eyes were sparkling with excitement, the smile gracing her lips giving testament to that.

“I can kind of imagine, I never thought I’d be able to talk to you about this stuff.” He said ducking his head down a little.

“Max, I think I’m very lucky. I get to see a world no one has ever seen before.” She said with a bit of awe.

“I just wish I had known that you knew about us.” He said sadly.

“Max…” She started to say.

“Liz, I wasted so much time. I would have said something a long time ago.” He said confidently.

“Really?” she asked, giving him a knowing look.

Max looked over at her, offered her a sheepish smile. “No, probably not, I never thought you would feel the same way.”

“Max, we both were afraid. What matters is that we have each other now. Right?” She asked as she gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.

“You’re right. What matters is now.” He said shyly.

“We have the rest of our lives to make up for what we missed.” She said, her words sounding so natural and matter of fact. She hadn’t really realized what she had said until Max parroted it back.

“The rest of our lives?” He said with wonder. ‘Did she want to marry him? Would she ever want something like that?’ He thought to himself.

Liz blushed to her roots. She had been talking as if in a daydream, speaking from the center of her heart without the filter of her brain. She averted her eyes to her lap and studied her hands.

“I…” she started, her voice quivering with uncertain emotion.

“Liz, you’re the only one that I would ever want to be with. The only one I’ll ever love.” He finished barely above a whisper.

Liz took a shuddering breath, trying to hold back the mist of tears forming in her eyes. She felt the rush of emotions flood through her. She needed to hold Max right now. Liz stole a quick glance at her watch; they had almost a half hour before they had to be at the quarry.

“Max, pull over behind there please.” She said pointing to the out cropping of rock a little farther up ahead.

“Are you all right?” he asked worriedly.

“I will be.” She told him, her voice a little breathy.

Max guided the jeep off the side of the road and in behind the rocks Liz had pointed to. They were completely invisible to the road, utterly alone, just as Liz had wanted. Max couldn’t push down his concern for her, his senses seeming to go into overdrive in the need to reassure himself that she was okay.

Shutting off the jeep Max turned towards her and looked at her with worry filled eyes, what met him was not what he had expected at all. Liz launched herself towards him, wrapping her arms around his neck as she straddled him on the seat. Max was completely frozen; he didn’t know that to do.

“I just needed to hold you Max, I love you so much.” She whispered near his ear. Her warm breath sending little shivers down his spine.

“I l…love y…y…you too.” Max finally stuttered out.

“Max…” Liz said softly to him.

Max was lost in her scent, strawberries, vanilla and Liz. It was a combination that he would never tire off. If anything he needed it in his system to make it through the day.

Liz wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his lips to hers. She felt her pulse quicken as the warmth of his kisses flowed through her. She was quickly drowning in him and she didn’t want to be saved, but a little voice inside of her was warning her. ‘Slow down. This isn’t like you. Don’t rush it.’

“Oh shut up.” Liz mumbled against Max’s lips.

“Huh?” He asked as he pulled back from her, his eyes mirroring his confusion.

Liz ducked her head, cursing herself and that damn inner voice. She was happy that at least Max wouldn’t be able to tell if she was blushing. Her face was flush from there heated make-out session, that was at least one thing to be grateful for.

“Nothing.” She said against his chest where she had buried her head with a sigh

Max pulled her a little tighter to him, enjoying the feel of her tiny body close to his. Close to his!. This was not good, Max could feel his body’s natural response to hers and she was currently sitting on it. Liz wiggled her butt a little trying to get comfortable on his lap, when it dawned on her what was poking her.

“Oh my!” She exclaimed in wide-eyed innocence, causing Max to promptly blush the shade of the setting sun.

Liz slowly, slowly extricated herself from Max’s lap. She couldn’t help herself when she took the downward glance to see the bulge in his jeans. Liz glanced quickly at Max’s face she settled herself back into her seat. Both of them took deep breaths to try and control their ragging thoughts and bodies.

“We uh, should…” Max tried to say.

“Yea.” Liz said just a little to loudly, cringing at the volume of her own voice. “Yea, we should probably …”

“Go.” Max finished for her.

Max squirmed a little in his seat trying to get comfortable, but he wasn’t having very much success.

“Are you okay?” Liz asked him with growing concern.

“Um…yea…I just…. can’t get comfortable…I guess.” The blush crept up his cheeks.

Liz looked down at his seat and it dawned on her what he meant. She turned qyu=uickly to face the front when Max caught her staring at his, um, problem.

Max started the jeep and looked over at her before putting it into gear. Their eyes swept over each other, bashful but a little less inhibited than before. Liz didn’t want to silence the voice of feminine pride that proudly told her that she was the one who had made Max feel that way, the one he had responded to. She smiled a bit shyly at him and covered his hand with hers where it rested on the gearshift. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze as he pulled the jeep back out onto the road to the chamber.

It was a hell of a day, and they both hoped that it would only get better.

Chapter 19.

The secrets were gone. But Max was going to give a few people a piece of his mind about keeping this from him. They pulled up next to the cars and cut the engine. Max reached into the back and pulled out his backpack and stepped out onto the slightly sandy terrain. He ran around to the passenger side and helped Liz out, taking her in his arms and bringing her gently to the ground. Liz took the opportunity of being in Max’s arms to give him a loving kiss.

Smiling down at her, Max took her hand and led her over to the clearing next to the ravine where everyone else was waiting.

“Maxwell, nice of you to show up.” Michael said sarcastically.

“Michael!” Maria yelled at him.

He looked at her with a ‘what did I do?’ look on his face.

“They’re not late, spaceboy, so can it.” she warned him.

Liz couldn’t help but giggle at the exchange between the two of them. Her eyes met Maria’s; she just shrugged her shoulders and leaned into Michael’s side.

“I told you guys last week about the stones that I found out at Frazier woods. I have no idea what these things are, or what those drawings mean.” Max said with a shake of his head in frustration.

“I’ve been looking at the symbols, and it feels like I should know what they say. It’s almost right there and then it slips away.” Isabelle said in irritation.

“Can I look at the symbols?” Liz asked shyly.

“Sure.” Max said as he reached into his backpack and pulled out a copy of the glyphs. “Here ya go.” He said softly to her.

Liz unfolded the paper and looked in slight awe at the symbols. They looked familiar to her too; she knew she had seen them before. Then it dawned on her; in her Grandma Claudia’s book there was something a lot like this.

“Hey guys, in my Grandma Claudia’s book I saw writing like this. When we get back to the Crash, I’ll get it and we can look take a look.” She said with a smile.

Max pulled Liz a little closer to his side, molding her tiny body next to his solid frame. She looked up at him; her eyes were sparkling with excitement and proud of herself that she was able to help. Well at least she hoped she was helping. Max bent down and placed a tender kiss on the crown of Liz’s head, he lingered for a moment to inhale the captivating scent of her.

“I can do a search on the web for ancient languages and symbols, see what I can come up with.” Alex offered offhandedly.

Isabelle looked at her boyfriend with pride, he was one of the best things she had ever done. No matter what, she would never give him up. She sent him a bashful smile and gave his had a little squeeze.

“Thanks Alex, every bit helps.” Max said appreciatively.

The rest of the meeting was spent looking at the translucent amber stones Max had found. There didn’t seem to be any apparent purpose for them. Max tried scanning it with his powers but he didn’t get anything. The stones did call to him; they felt so familiar but nothing more.

While Liz had wandered over to talk to Maria, Max held one of the stones in his hands and just lost himself in thought. He closed his eyes and just let his mind drift, trying to pick up anything. That’s when it happened.

The stone started to glow, as if an internal light had been switched and was steadily becoming brighter. Max could feel the change in the stone; it seemed to be channeling power through him. He was in control of it but the stone also was guiding him on its own path.

“Oh my God!” Maria exclaimed, as she watched the stone Max held grow a little brighter.

Liz turned and looked at him with fear etched on her face. Her heart started to pound in her chest as she watched the light shine steadily from the stone. Liz searched Max’s face for any sigh that he was being hurt and she could find none. Whatever was happening was not a bad thing, she hoped.

Slowly the glow faded as the stone returned to its normal quartz like color. Max opened his eyes and a little smile came over his face. It had been one of the most incredible experiences he had ever had.

“That was incredible.” Max finally exclaimed in wonder.

“What the hell just happened?” Michael questioned agitatedly.

“I was being taught how to use it.” Max answered simply.

Isabelle looked a bit skeptical at Max’s explanation. “You mean the thing talked to you?” She feared what his answer might be.

“Not really talked, it …was more like implied instructions. It wasn’t like I had a conversation with the thing.” He said with a bit of humor in his tone.

Isabelle just rolled her eyes and shrugged her shoulders. “What are they?”

“They’re healing stones, they amplify my powers, letting me heal things with out as much effort. They obey you but they also show you how they should be used. It’s almost like a partnership between you and it.” Max tried to explain.

“But why five of them Max?” Liz asked curiously.

“Yea what she said.” Michael added for good measure.

Liz rolled her eyes at him before turning her attention back to Max. Max had to take a second and appreciate the people in front of him. They were all working as a team as if it was the most natural thing for them to do.

“If each one of us holds one, it brings more power, lets you accomplish greater things as a group, and it allows those who can’t heal the ability to do it.” Max said without thinking, the knowledge seemed to be a part of him, like he had known it all along.

“Let’s hope that we never have to use them for that.” Isabelle said thoughtfully

She was greeted by a murmur of agreement.

“Liz, can we meet at the Crashdown after close to look at that book?” Max asked her discreetly.

“Yea, that would be fine. Just have everyone come over a little before close.” She said with a smile.

“Okay guys, lets meet back at the Crashdown around closing time and take a look at that book.” Max said.

After a chorus of nods and Okays, they all headed to the cars and started back to Roswell.

Liz locked the door behind the last customer and flipped the sign showing they were closed. The gang arrived about Ten minutes ago and was just occupying themselves in a booth. Max came up behind Liz and wrapped his arms around her tiny waist.

“Tired?” he asked against her neck, his warm breath making it hard for her to concentrate.

Liz laid her head back against Max’s strong chest and sighed. She loved this feeling, being in the arms of the man that she loved. She had imagined this moment many times. Max would greet her after they both got home from their long day of work. The kids were playing in the family room. They would talk softly of the day they had and what the night might bring. Share a romantic dinner, well at least as romantic as you can with a Five and a Three year old.

“Liz?” Liz looked up from the table in her mind and smiled at Max.

“Yes Max, I’ll get the kids.” She said to her imagined family, her voice sweet and loving.

“Liz?” Max asked again, lightly shaking her shoulder.

“Max. Oh…” She raised her hand to her mouth in embarrassment. She was mortified. She had been having a daydream and just lost herself in it.

“Kids huh?” Max asked her quietly, his heart pounding at the possibility.

Liz buried her head in his shirt, trying to hide from the world. How could she have been so foolish? She had to stop acting like a little schoolgirl. She was a woman, well almost; she had to start acting like one.

Liz nodded her head in answer to his question. Max pushed her gently away so that he could look at her. He placed his finger under her chin and raised her eyes to his. His smile drew her in and put her at ease, never had he picked on her for her daydreams. If anything he shared the same desires.

“Liz, I would love any kind of future with you. We would have beautiful babies, as long as they looked like their mother.” He said softly to her, placing a little kiss on her nose and then on her lips. He lingered there for a few moments before pulling her into a quick hug.

“You ready?” Max asked her.

She nodded her head and they went over the booth and while Max sat down she went a retrieved the book from her locker. She had put it there earlier so she wouldn’t have to disturb her parents after close. Liz handed the book to Max and sat down next to him, her hand resting on his jean clad thigh. Max looked over quickly at her but she had already started to open the book to the pages she had marked earlier when they had gotten back from the quarry.

“It in this section here on the Mescalero Indian tribe. They spoke of visitors from the night sky. They called them ‘Nacedo’ it meant outsider.” Liz read out loud..

Liz turned to the next section she had marked and showed them the symbols there. Some looked very close to the glyphs that Max had copied from the cave wall. Others were not even close.

“See, look at these here. See how close they are?” Liz asked Max.

“Yea, but the rest of them aren’t even close.” He said dejectedly.

Liz thought about for a second, then her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. It seemed like pretty out there theory but it made since in a twilight zone kind of way. Liz took a deep breath and decided anything was better then nothing.

“Max, this might sound crazy…” She started, but Alex cut her off.

“As opposed to Aliens living among us, right?” He said with a grin, just trying to ease the tension.

He was met with a couple of cold glares, one even from his girlfriend.

“Okay, okay. Tall, geeky boy being quiet over here, proceed.” Alex said properly chastised.

Liz rolled her eyes and gave Isabelle an apologetic look.

“Isabelle, let me apologize for Alex. But I have to warn you; I’ve known him a long time. It’s not going to get any better.” Her smirk showed her amusement at Alex’s expense.

“Nice, nice…um…can we continue… Miss Rhodes scholar.” He quipped.

Maria looked back and forth between the two of them, shaking her head.

“Children, children. Am I going to have to separate you two again?” Maria scolded them.

Max and Isabelle just looked on; amused this was their group. It was a little bit of something for everyone.

“Anyway….” Liz continued, “ They may have based some of their written language on yours. It’s not like this was all that long ago, a couple hundred years at most. It’s not out of the realm of possibility.”

“Okay lets say your right…” Max started.

“Maxwell, you can’t be serious.” Michael said in annoyed disbelief.

“Michael.” Isabelle warned him.

“No, c’mon this is a little out there, she was right. No offense.” He said, adding the last for Liz.

“None taken.” She said politely, with a subtle nod of her head.

“Listen, like Alex said before…how can we just dismiss this off hand? We’re here aren’t we? Nothing is out the realm of the possible.” Max said firmly.

Alex chanced a look at Isabelle at Max’s comment. The smug look that had started to appear quickly vanished, as Isabelle looked at him with one eyebrow raised in challenge.

The entire group noticed the change in Max; he seemed more confident with Liz by his side. He was still the same shy boy when it came to Liz but that’s where it ended. He seemed to exude a natural leadership quality that you just wanted to follow. The group was turning more and more to him for direction. His natural instinct was to shy away from being at the center. But this, this was different.

“What?” Max asked when they had all quieted and just looked at him.

“What’s our next move?” Isabelle prompted him.

Liz reached over and placed her hand on his, giving her support to him. Her touch buoyed Max’s resolve and made him feel like he could handle anything as long as Liz was by his side.

“We do some more research. Alex, you and Isabelle can check out the web, we’re looking for ancient languages, symbols, and things like that. Michael, you still go out for searches in the desert right?” Michael nodded his affirmation, “You and Maria, check that out again, see if you can find the spot where the pods were. Liz and I will b-“

“Making out in the back.” Michael said a sarcastically.

Liz blushed to her roots, as much as that’s what she wanted to do, she would never admit that to them. Before Max could even react Maria had already smacked him in the side of his head.

“Hey.” Michael exclaimed. “What?” He questioned her.

“Don’t what me, spaceboy. You opened your mouth and you get a slap.” Maria said defiantly to him.

The whole table chuckled softly at his cowed look.

“Like I was saying, Liz and I will do more research on her Grandma’s book. I saw a help wanted sign over at the UFO museum. If I can get a job, there bound have some files or something. I mean there had to be some shred of truth to at least one of two of the stories.” Max said confidently.

Alex looked at Max. The words were out before he could stop himself. “Boy, now that’s irony.”

Chapter 20.

“What do you think of this one?” Liz asked, her voice unsure.

“Well that depends on what kind of look you’re going for. If you want to put him to sleep that is definitely the dress for you.” Maria said as she continued to browse the rack.

“Great, I liked this one too.” Liz quipped to her. “We’ve been at this for hours now. I just don’t think the dress exists.”

They had been bouncing from store to store all day long, since Ten o’clock this morning. This was not how Liz had envisioned her day. She had planned to have her dress within two hours so that she could spend some time with Max.

She missed him; well, she had seen him last night until he finally left her balcony at Eleven o’clock. But still, she wanted every second she could get with him. They had sat in her lounge chair and talked softly, about nothing really. She had told him of her plan today for shopping and he had just given her a knowing look. She should have known then that she was in trouble. She’ll have to get him for the smirk he gave right before he left, telling her ‘Good luck’.

Maria picked another dress and handed it to Liz. Liz just looked at her and started muttering under her breath as she retreated back into the dressing room.

The dress was light lavender in color, with spaghetti straps. Liz looked at it up in the light and sighed. This was another one that she was going to like and Maria was going to shoot her down. She slipped the gown over her head and luxuriated in the fell of the cool silk as it glided down her skin. She straightened her self and smoothed the slight lines out. She didn’t even look in the mirror; she didn’t want to really like the dress just to have Maria tell her it was boring. She was going to have to reconsider why she was taking Maria’s advice to begin with.

Liz stepped out of the dressing room and sighed, catching the attention of Maria.

“Don’t even say it, I already know, it’s dull.” She said listlessly as Maria turned towards her.

The dress Maria had in her hands was forgotten as it fell to the floor. Her jaw hung slack as she looked at the stunning dress before her. It was perfect for Liz. It accentuated her body perfectly, hugging her curves as if it had been tailored just for her. The front plunged slightly revealing a subtle amount of cleavage. Maria made the motion for Liz to turn around. The back of the dress was a bit more daring. It was cut low to about three-quarters of the way down her back. Liz finally completed her circle and turned tired eyes to Maria.

“I know, I know. Boring.” Liz said as she began to turn away.

Maria couldn’t believe her ears. Boring, this dress was anything but boring. She was going to have Maxie boy eating right from her hands. Not that she didn’t already, but that was beside the point.

“Liz, have you looked in the mirror?” Maria asked her slowly.

Liz stopped mid turn and looked over at Maria, the look on her face was enough to move her quickly to the full-length mirror on the dressing room door. The reflection Liz saw in the mirror amazed her, she didn’t even recognize this girl, strike that, woman. The dress looked amazing on her. Her eyes ran over every inch of the gown, all of the curves and lines, they brought out everything about her.

“Oh my God!” Liz exclaimed in disbelief.

“That’s exactly my thought.” Maria sidled up to her and started to arrange Liz’s hair in a French twist. “Chica, you look incredible. Max is not going to know what hit him, plus he’ll be beating off the rest of the guys that will be begging at your heals with a stick.” She said confidently.

“Maria…” Liz said skeptically.

“I’m serious Lizzie, you are hot.” Maria let loose of her hair and let it fall down about her shoulders. “Up or down?”

“Huh?” Liz questioned her, the confusion plainly written all over her face.

“Your hair, c’mon girlfriend stay with me here.” Maria chastised her.

“I don’t know, Max likes to run his fingers through my hair, A lot, so maybe down. What do you think?” Liz asked her worriedly.

“I think you should wear it up, with a few strands down to frame your face and those precious cheeks.” Maria said as she pinched one of them.

“Maria…” Liz warned her.

“…But you should be able to take it down for…Later.” She said suggestively, wiggling her eyebrows up and down.

“Maria…” She exclaimed in shock, her cheeks flaming red. “I’ve never though of anything like that.”

“Liz you are a baaad liar. Look at you; you’re as red as a tomato. Of course you’ve thought about it. I mean look at him, I would.” She finished with a matter of fact shrug of her shoulders.

Liz raised shy eyes to her and looked nervously back down at her hands. She had started to ring them together and bite her lower lip, sure signs she was very nervous.

“Liz, he’s the one isn’t he?” She asked her best friend gently, placing her hand on her shoulder for support.

Liz slowly nodded her head. She couldn’t meet Maria’s eyes, afraid of what she might think of her. Liz had to be honest with herself, she wanted this, he was the one. She had always waited for him and she didn’t want to wait anymore. She had grown up in a loving family, she knew what it looked and felt like to have that deep of a connection to someone, to love them that much.

“Chica, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. I know you love him, but most importantly you know he loves you just as much. When its right its right. Does Max know?”

Liz’s response answered that question very quickly in the negative.

“Liz listen, if you guys haven’t talked about it, or can’t talk about it, then maybe you shouldn’t. You both have to be ready. You have to feel comfortable.” She offered supportively.

“I love him Maria, I …I want to make …love to him.” She said shakily.

Maria looked at her a little skeptically, tilting her head slightly to the side in question.

“I’m sure, I want to make love to him.” She said, feeling proud of herself that she didn’t stammer.

Her pride quickly turned to mortification when Isabelle appeared next to her. She had been looking at gowns on the other side of the store and had finally found a few red ones that she really liked. Isabelle’s face was the picture of shock, her jaw had dropped and her eyes had gone round, she raised her hand to cover her mouth and shook her head, trying to make the words she had just heard go away.

“Isabelle!” Liz exclaimed, her eyes huge with fear.

“Hi Isabelle, we were just talking about y-“ Maria started to explain.

Isabelle raised her hand in a signal for her to stop. She closed her eyes and shook her head just to reaffirm.

“Do not finish that sentence or I’ll turn your hair green.” She said in warning.

Maria raised her hands in surrender and turned back to the gowns. Liz looked at Isabelle, unsure as what to do.

“Liz, its okay. I …are you sure?” She asked with concern, now that the initial shock had worn off.

Liz nodded mutely, her cheeks flaming bright red again. It’s one thing to talk to your best friend about something like this; it’s completely different when it’s your boyfriend’s sister.

“I won’t say anything.” Isabelle assured her. “I’m sure you know this, but he loves you more than life.”

Liz nodded her head, a shy smile gracing her lips. Liz knew from their first kiss, that Max had loved her. His note to her had said it so eloquently. She could not believe how lucky she was, how lucky they both were.

Isabelle smiled at the dreamy look Liz had gotten on her face. She had definitely traveled of the Max-land. She had a slightly amused smile of her face as she went into the dressing room to try on the gowns she had found.

After leaving the mall, they dropped Isabelle of at home and started to head over to the Crashdown. They had spent another hour shopping, getting shoes, and nylons. Everything they would need for one of the biggest nights of their lives. There was one thing that Liz hadn’t been able to get at the mall that she wanted to pickup.

“Maria, um…can we stop at drug store, I ah…need to get something.” Liz stammered.

“Sure we have to go- wait a minute. What do you have to get?” Maria asked with a raised eyebrow.

“Maria!” Liz exclaimed in frustration.

“Remember what I said?” Mara replied.

“Yes mom, …I do.” She said in exasperation.

“Well?” Maria pushed her.

“I want to buy condoms. There. You happy? I said it.” She said with an angry blush tingeing her cheeks.

“Chica, are you sure?” Maria queried her gently.

“More than anything in my entire life, Maria. I love him, with all my heart. I know he feels the same. I’m ready. I’ve waited for him.” Liz said thoughtfully.

“I know you have sweetie, I know.” Maria gently patted Liz’s hand where it rested on the car seat.

Maria pulled into the parking lot of the pharmacy. They sat in the car for a few moments. Liz was trying to work up the courage to go in and get what she needed, they needed.

“Do you want me to go in with you?” Maria offered.

“Thanks Maria, I owe you.” Liz said gratefully.

Liz took a couple of deep breaths and opened the car door, stepped out and closed it behind her. They met at the front of the car and headed into the store. After checking the signs above the aisles, they found themselves standing in font a myriad of different brands, style and colors.

“Why would anyone want colored ones?” Liz said with a shiver.

She looked at all the boxes and had to admit, she had no idea what she was doing. Would she get the right kind, lubricated or not. Even as the last thought entered her mind she already knew the answer. ‘If I’m anything like after a dream about him, I will not need the lubricated ones.’ She thought shyly, and blushed despite keeping the thought to herself.

“What should I get?” Liz asked Maria with nervousness.

“Well, I don’t know. I mean I’ve never done this before. Um…is size going to be a factor?” she asked offhandedly.

Liz just wanted a hole to open up in the floor and swallow her. Her cheeks just went red and stayed that way.

“I’ll take that as ‘A bigger size will be necessary.’ blush.” Maria said.

Liz shook her head at Maria and tried to focus on the task at hand. She really wished she had more information so she could pick out the right type. ‘Stop it Parker, this isn’t a science project!’ She scolded herself.

Liz looked over all the different types and finally settled on the Inspiral condoms. Something about them just looked right. Liz reached out, and with a slightly shaking hand, took a box of twelve from the shelf.

“Um…Liz, they have a three pack here of these, see?” She pointed out innocently; a tiny smirk was paying at her lips.

“No thanks, I’m just going to just get the box.” Liz said, looking at a spot on the floor.

Maria gave her a knowing smile, hell if it were her and Michael, she’d get a box of them too. Well, on second though, Maria reached out and took a box of them as well. Liz turned a questioning eye to her and smirked.

“What…you never know.” She said in a huff and turned to go to the check out, with Liz hot on her heals.

After securing their purchases, and nobody they knew seeing them, thank god, they went back out to the jetta. They shut the doors after climbing inside and just sat there in silence. They both turned towards each other a few moments late, their eyes met and then they squealed. Liz did not consider herself the giddy type, but this experience just set her nerve endings tingling. The thought alone of what they had bought and what they were use for was just …wow, to them.

“Do you believe we just did that?” Liz asked, shaking her head in disbelief.

“Chica, a girls got to be prepared. Men are dogs and we know this. Well, maybe not yours, but definitely most “ Maria sat quiet for second. “Liz, you do realize that you will probably have to make the first move right?” She said, vocalizing her thought as they came to her.

“I do, Ria? I love him.” Liz said without hesitation.

“I know you do, I know you do.” Maria patted her hand then started the jetta and headed to the Crashdown to drop Liz off.

Liz smiled gratefully to her. This was becoming a very interesting day.

Back in the store Pam Troy came out from behind the display she had been standing behind. She could barely believe what she had just seen. Innocent, prissy Liz Parker was going to have a piece of the incredibly desirable max Evens. How the hell did she pull the whole thing off anyways? Pam had been trying for years to get him, and now mousy Liz Parker gets him without even trying.

She thought back to the whole prom tickets incident and felt her blood start to boil all over again. Something just had to be done, and she was the one to do it.

“Well, we’ll see about this…!” She mumbled viciously.

tbc... in a week or so..

Chapter 21.

“I am not wearing that!” Michael exclaimed heatedly.

“Michael, you have to wear a tux, jeans and a Metallica t-shirt are not going to cut it. Besides, Maria will kill you.” Max warned him.

Michael let out an irritated breath, ever since the whole prom thing had come up, Maria had been driving him nuts. He was under direct orders to have a tux that would match an off-white dress.

Max had been given the edict of; ’if it doesn’t go with lavender, then don’t show up.’ this also declared by Maria as Liz just shook her head at her. Max knew better than to mess with her. It would be like crossing Izzy at Christmas time. You run for cover and hope for the best.

Max had decided to go with a traditional cut, no tails. Liz had given him a swatch of the color of the dress to make sure it was an exact match. He wasn’t able to find a cummerbund to match, so he purchased a white one with the intent of using a little alien voodoo to make the proper adjustments.

Now Alex was, well, being Alex. He was going all the way, top hat, tails and even a cane.

“You aren’t actually gonna wear that are you?” Michael asked worriedly.

“What? What’s wrong with this?” Alex asked indignantly.

“Well, are you going to a circus?” Michael asked sarcastically.

Alex looked down at himself. He thought he looked pretty damn suave, if he did say so himself. He just looked at Michael and shook his head, that boy will never know style, even if it came up to him and kicked him in the balls.

“Hey Alex where’s your gloves? You have to have white gloves.” Max said, egging him on.

Max knew that he was probably going to catch hell for not keeping an eye on the wonder twins, but this was just too much fun. He had stopped Alex from getting the wing tip shoes, that was just over the line, but the other stuff, well, he actually looked pretty cool. If anyone could pull this look of it was going to be Alex. Isabelle would probably wear some Ginger Rodgers style dress. They would be West Roswell’s own Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers.

Speaking of dancing, Liz had said that she wanted to be the one to teach him how, after all she pointed out, she was Max’s girlfriend. They had to rap this up so that he could get over there for his first lesson. He only hoped that he didn’t break her toe from stepping on it too often.

“Guy’s are we almost through here?” Max asked a bit anxiously.

“What’s the matter Maxwell, Liz crackin the whip?” Michael said with a smirk.

Alex couldn’t help it, he just had to laugh at that. Ever since Max and Liz had gotten together they were inseparable. He swore that every time he saw her, Max was attached to her side. He had to laugh when he remembered the bathroom incident.

Max and Liz had been walking down the hall to their next class, which they just happened to have together. It was in the middle of a bell so the halls were pretty full. Alex had been talking to Maria near her locker, which coincidently, happened to be thirty feet down the hall. Max and Liz had said hello as they passed Maria and Alex on their way up the hallway. Maria and Alex just stood there in shocked amazement as the two of them walked right into the girls bathroom, together! Neither one of them even flinched as they went inside; Liz even opened the door for him, still chatting away.

Alex had tried to wave at Max when he realized what he though was going to happen, but it was too late. They both just waved back and went right on in.

Next thing anyone knew there was a bunch of shrieks and squeals coming from the girl’s bathroom. In about two seconds flat the door opened and Max came flying out of there. His face was flaming red and his eyes were wide with fright. He had not made it one full step out the door when the entire hallway started cheering and laughing at him.

Max didn’t know what to do, so he just stood there, back against the wall, looking at his feet.

“Way to go Max, you are a brave man.” One kid called out.

“Hey Evans, did you have to dry her hands for her?” Someone jeered.

“Do they have a lounge in there?”

“Did you see anything?”

Finally after a minute or two, everything started to calm down and the crowd went about their business. Max just stood there, completely despondent. He had embarrassed Liz; it was the last thing he had ever wanted to do to her.

Alex and Maria made their way over to him. Maria decided it was her job to try and cheer him up, and then she was going to get Lizzy.

“Hey there girlfriend, nice show.” She said before she realized the girlfriend part might not be the best reference right now. Judging from Max’s pained look, she was right on the mark. “Sorry bout that.” Maria said with a guilty shrug.

“Max, don’t worry about it. No one was hurt and you just got to live out a Star Trek moment. “ Alex said good naturedly.

Max looked up at him with questioning eyes, still too mortified to even speak.

“You’ve boldly gone, where no man has gone before.” He said, giving Max a light slap on the shoulder.

Max gave him a pained smile and just said nothing. The door to the bathroom opened and Liz’s head popped out. Seeing that the hallway was pretty clear, she came out to find the three of them next to the doorway.

“Hey.” Liz said softly to him

When Max refused to raise his eyes, she placed her finger under his chin and pulled his chin up to look at her.

“I am so sorry Max, so sorry.” Liz said, desperately trying not to giggle.

“Liz it’s not your fault, I wasn’t paying attention.” He said a bit dejectedly

“Max you have to admit, it was pretty funny.” Alex said trying to help.

Liz shook her head at him; taking Max’s hand into hers, she pulled him away from the locker and turned them to head to their class.

“Hey, it will all blow over.” She tried to soothe him.

Max just shook his head.

Maria looked at Liz sympathetically, and then gave Alex a shove. They headed down to their next class leaving Liz and Max to head to theirs.

“Very funny Guerin.” Max said warningly. “Remember, your leash isn’t all that long as I seem to recall.”

Michael glared at him but he knew he had been beat. He did have to admit Maria had him pretty well wrapped around her little finger. It’s one thing to know that you are wrapped, but it’s a another to actually admit it out loud, now that will never happen.

They all paid for their rentals and headed out of the shop. Alex and Michael were going to head over to the arcade for a while. It was one of their Saturday afternoon rituals. Alex had had to repeatedly remind Michael not to cheat. They were quite the unlikely pair but they had become really good friends.

“All right guy’s, I’ll see you later. Hey Alex, go easy on Michael.” Max ribbed him.

“Maxwell, put your money where your mouth is.” Michael taunted him.

“Nah, I let Alex take care of my light work.” He smirked at Alex as he flexed his arms.

Michael shook his head and gave Alex a little shove, “C’mon geek boy, lets go get your ass kicked.”

Authors Note:
I will be posting updates after the board has been moved. RL has gotten in the way as well and really don't have anything ready either.

When I get back I will be posting at both boards, Outer Haven and here, as well as a few others, if I can stay on top of it. We'll see.

It is disappointing that some very good writers feel the need to leave the board. The ones who really lose are the fans.

Anyways, I'll be back in a couple weeks with some updates, I hope. My muse has not been cooperative lately but we'll see. If anyone is still bumping any of the stories that may be a bit of inspiration..we'll see.

Love and peace to all,
