~ Prologue ~

Liz Parker stared at the empty suitcases that lay on her bed. She knew that she needed to start packing, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. She was told that she only had three days before she had to move out since she could no longer pay her rent. She held her three-year-old son with one hand and she wiped the tears away from her eyes with the other. Her ex-husband, Sean Deluca had just died in a terrible car accident and he could no longer pay his child support. Her job pay was not enough to support her and her son, so she was forced to make a drastic decision. She was going back home. Back to Roswell, New Mexico. The place where everything started....

~ Part 1 ~

“Hey guys. What are we talking about?“ Liz asked.

“That test that Mr. Smith gave us. It was a killer,” Max Evans, Liz’s best friend, answered.

“Yeah, there goes my passing grade,” Maria complained.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Liz commented.

“Yeah, well we aren’t headed towards an Ivy League college like you,” Alex piped in. They were all close friends and have been ever since Liz moved there in the third grade. Except for Kyle and Tess. Kyle and Tess were brother and sister. Tess was Max’s current girlfriend, though the whole group had their doubts as to how long they would last.

“Ok, on to more important things. My cousin Sean is starting today,” Maria said excitedly.

“Yeah, he’s in my third period,” Liz said.

“Didn’t he like, just get out of juvie?” Kyle asked.

“Yeah, I heard that he spent two years there,” said Tess, who had just walked up to the table.

“The rumors are true but he didn’t go there for killing someone as I heard earlier,” explained Maria.

“Nope, it’s for getting into a street fight and for stabbing someone in the leg,” said a strange new voice. Everyone turned around and saw an 18-year-old boy standing there. He was obviously Sean He had dirty blonde eyes and sharp brown eyes that held a lot of pain. “I’m Sean, but I guess from all the rumors you already know who I am.”

“Hey Sean. I’m Liz. This is Max, Isabel, Michael, Kyle, Tess, Alex, and you obviously know Maria,” Liz said, taking the initiative.

“Hey Liz,” Sean said. She captivated him. She was beautiful with long brown hair that cascaded down her back. “You’re in one of my classes right?”

“Yeah, Spanish,” she replied. She obviously felt the same about him as he her.

“So, how’s your first day?” Maria asked excitedly.

“It just got good,” he said, referring to Liz. She smiled softly at him. Max watched the actions between his best friend and this newcomer. He didn’t like them. Liz was pretty hurt over the whole Tucker situation and it’s a miracle that they’re as such as good of friends as they are but he just couldn’t stand for her to get hurt again.

“Max, stop it,” Liz whispered to Max while the others learned more about Sean. She had felt him go rigid and she knew what he was thinking. He was always trying to protect her but it’s gotten even worse after she and Tucker broke up. He didn’t like it when she talked to any guys besides the ones from their group.

“I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

“You can’t protect me forever, Max.”

“Yeah, well at least I can try.”

“What are ya’ll whispering about,” Tess asked. She was jealous of Liz and always has been. The others didn’t like her that much. Her blonde curls were a little bit to tight and they seemed to effect any nice thoughts that went through her head. Everything she says comes out dripping in jealously and bitchiness.

“Not everything is about you Tess,” Michael said, overhearing what they had said. He had been quite up until this moment. He and Liz were also close and he admitted that he didn’t like her getting to close to any new guy either. Especially one with a shady background. Tess glared at Michael and was about to say something when the bell rang. Everyone grouped off to walk to their next class. Alex and Isabel, Kyle, Michael and Maria, Max and Tess, and Sean and Liz. It turned out that they had three classes together.

“So, have you lived here your whole life?” Sean asked Liz. They were on their way to History.

“Since the third grade. I was this shy little girl until I met Max.”

“Are you two, involved?”

“Max and me! No, he’s my best friend. Has been ever since I met him. Why?”

“You too seemed kind of close today at lunch.”

“He’s very overprotective. He treats me like I’m five. It’s kind of sweet but it gets annoying.”

“Would he have any objections to you going out on Friday?”

“Well, would you.”

“Depends who I’m going with,” Liz said with a smirk.

“Would you go with me?” Liz thought about it for a moment.

“Pick me up at 8?”

“Great. See you then,” Sean said and he walked to an empty seat.

~ Friday ~

“I don’ know if you should be going out with him,” Max said sternly. The week had gone by faster then expected and Liz was preparing for her date with Sean.

“You heave to let me grow up sometime, Max. I’m not in the third grade anymore.” Liz was getting annoyed with him.

“Remember what happened with Tucker. You trusted him to fast. Look where that ended up.” Liz didn’t say anything. “He hurt you. Do you not remember when you came to my house after it happened? You were destroyed.”

“Max, that was last year. Besides,” Liz added, “it’s not like we’re going to get married.”

“How can you go out with him, you just met him three days ago and you don’t know that much about him, except for the fact that he has a shady background.”

“I know that his father beat him when he was smaller and he had to go through a series of foster homes.”

“Oh, so you’re going out with him because you pity him?”

“No, I’m going out with him because he’s cute, he’s funny, and he treats me like I’m 17. Not like I’m five like some people do,” Liz said, indicating Max.

“Michael does it too. It’s not just me. In fact everybody does it. You’re the baby of the group. We have to take care of you,” Max said, pulling her into his lap. She wrapped her arms around his neck. “I just don’t want you to get hurt again.”

“I’m not. I’ll be careful. In fact if you want to, maybe you and Tess can go with us on a double date. Not today, but maybe next time.”

“I think that I’m going to end it with Tess. She’s kind of annoying and she’s just a bitch.”

“Finally, you open your eyes to the real world! Just because she’s easy doesn’t mean that you have to date her. I’m sure that if you just asked she would have gladly opened her...”

“I don’t need to hear anymore. And who says that she hasn’t opened...up I should say, to me already.”

“This is when I act like I don’t know you.” Max smiled at her.

“We need to decide what you’re going to where. Well, you need to decide. I’m not really good with all the fashion stuff.”

“Thanks. For everything I mean,” Liz said, and with that she kissed him on the cheek and stood up. Max put his fingers to his cheek. Her kiss had sent shivers down his spine. Something that he wasn’t supposed to feel. With her back turned, Liz did the same. Her fingers were on her lips and the hair on her arms was rising. She shook the feeling away. I must be nervous, she thought. She brushed her thoughts away and started to concentrate on what she would wear. Max stayed with her and they talked about school and the new movie that was out. Everything best friends would talk about. Both refusing to think or remember the feelings they had felt earlier. When it was eight they both waited for the doorbell to ring. They sat in silence and when it did ring and they both jumped. Liz and Max walked out of the room and walked downstairs. When she opened the door she saw Sean standing their holding s dozen white roses. She looked at Max and she smiled. She knew that Max knew that her favorite flowers were white roses. He had done that for her. She walked over to him and gave him a hug. That was his way of apologizing for treating her like a baby. He is so sweet sometimes, Liz thought. She turned to Sean and he grabbed her hand and together they walked out the door.

~ A couple of hours later ~

“No, the best part was when he couldn’t figure out how to pee!” Liz laughed. They had just seen Hot Chick and were now on their way back to the Crashdown.

“Nope, definitely the part where the dad caught him and the mom in the bathroom together!”

“Ok, I have a question. Do guys really have that much trouble when peeing for the first time?”

“That is a question that I refuse to answer. But, you seem pretty close with Max so why don’t you just ask him.” Liz grimaced with the harsh tone of his voice. That had been mean and he knew it, but he couldn’t refrain from saying it. She had been talking about Max all night. It would make any stranger think that she had a thing for him.

“Max and I are really close, I will admit that. I’ve know him since the third grade and he knows things about me that no one else knows. He’s been my best friend and he’s been there for me through times that I didn’t think I could get through. And I wouldn’t have gotten through them if it weren’t for him.”

“The thing with Tucker?”

“No, but that’s why everybody else thinks that they have to protect me.”

“So, are you going to tell me why he’s so protective over you, cause I don’t want there to be competition.”

“I don’t think that I can tell you right now. But in time I will. Just give me some time.” They were parked in front of the Crashdown. Liz looked up at Sean and saw that he was leaning in for a kiss. Liz closed the distance and their lips brushed together. It was soft at first but soon his tongue grew demanding and he was prying her lips open. Liz participated at first but when things got heated she stopped. She remembered all to well what happened last time things got heated. She said goodnight to a disappointed Sean. He was obviously expecting more. She waved once more and she went inside. When she got to her room she took her shirt off and looked in the mirror. She traced a long scar that trailed down her left side with her fingers. When Sean had asked all those questions it had opened something in her that had been closed for almost a year. She stood there for a while and she soon lost track of time. She was lost in her thoughts and she was on the verge of tears. She was so lost that she didn’t hear Max’s voice from outside her window. Nor did she hear the window slide open and see Max walk in. All she remembered was seeing Max stand behind her in the mirror. Watching her cry. She remembered him wrapping his arms around her and letting her cry on his shoulder. He helped her put her shirt back on and he laid her on her bed. She remembered him just being there. Not saying anything, not doing anything but being there, holding her. Protecting her from the world and all the bad things that it contained. They laid there in silence, Max’s arms around her, until they both fell asleep, blocking out the memories of the past.

Ok, that first part didn’t go as well as I would have liked it to but it will have to do. Yes, Max and Tess are going out but it will only be for a short time. you will learn more about Liz’s past in the next few parts. I really hoped that enjoyed it. Feedback is always accepted! The next part should be out in a couple of days!

~ Part 2 ~

~ The next morning ~

Liz’s mom, Nancy, walked into Liz’s room to make sure that she was up and ready for work. She knocked on her door and when Liz didn’t reply she opened it slowly. She saw Liz lying there in Max’s arms. Normally she would have been seriously freaked out but with the certain circumstances she understood what had happened. Liz had gone on her first date since Tucker and she was upset when she got home. Max has come to see how it went, being the best friend that he was, and comforted her. They had fallen asleep on her bed. Nancy smiled to herself. This wasn’t the first time that something like this had happened. She remembered when Liz would have Max over every night after it first happened. Liz went straight to Max after Tucker had raped her claiming that he was still after her. Tears came to Nancy’s eyes as she remembered how scared her daughter was when she first found out what Tucker had done to her.

~ Flashback ~

“Mom! Help me. He’s after me. He’s gonna hurt me!” Liz cried. She was on the phone with her mom. She was at Max’s house. It was moments after Tucker had just forced himself on her and Max was the closest house so she had gone to him. She told her mom to come and get her. She didn’t tell her what happened though. That was something that she couldn’t say on the phone. She turned and walked back into Max’s waiting arms. It had been hard enough telling him what had happened. He told her that he didn’t that it was good idea to go out with him but Liz didn’t listen.

“Liz, what’s the matter? What happened?” Nancy asked. She just got to Max’s house and she was terribly worried about Liz.

“He hurt me, mommy,” Liz said, starting to cry again, “He’s after me. He’s going to find me and hurt me again.” That was all Liz could say before sobs overtook her body. She leaned against Max and closed her eyes softly.

“Oh my God! He...he raped you. He raped my baby!” Nancy shrieked. She looked at Max for conformation, and he nodded solemnly at her. Her shoulders started shaking and she grasped for Liz. This was the first time that she had really looked at her and she could see bruises on her face. Her arms were red and her shirt was torn. She had scratch marks on her legs and they were bleeding freely. All Nancy could think about was, my baby was raped, my baby was raped, my baby...

~ End Flashback ~

Tears rolled down Nancy’s eyes as she closed the door. She didn’t want to wake Liz. She knew that she needed her rest. She thought about waking Max up and telling him that it was ok to go home but she decided against it. She knew that she couldn’t wake Max up without waking Liz up and she could tell that Liz really wanted Max to be with her right now. Liz told Max things about the incident that she never told Nancy. Liz trusted her life with him. It was a wonder that they weren’t a couple. They had everything in common and he was so good to her. He would never hurt her like Tucker did.

Nancy walked away from Liz’s room and left them to sleep peacefully.

“Where is Max?” Tess asked impatiently. They were all sitting downstairs in the cafe.

“I don’t know. Liz isn’t here either,” Maria answered. She wasn’t really worried. Liz often took days off and Maria had a feeling that something happened last night. Sean had probably pried, Maria thought, and Liz got upset and called Max. It’s happened before. Sometimes Liz would become overwhelmed with everything that bad memories came back and she would break down. I’ll have to go see her after school, Maria decided.

“Their, getting in on,” Alex said in a sing song voice.

“He was kidding,” Isabel told Tess, who was starting to look a little worried.

“Well, they have been a little close lately,” Tess said.

“Yeah, well, Liz has been going through some stuff,” Maria and Alex said. Tess didn’t know that whole story with Tucker.

“God, you guys act like they got divorced. I mean he dumped her. So what! They were only going out for like three months!” Tess exclaimed.

“There’s more hell to the story than you know about, Tess! Just butt out and leave her the hell alone! She’s not going to steal Max from you, don’t worry. They are only best friends. Best friends spend time with each other. You don’t see Sean all nervous that she’d gonna ditch him do you!” Michael yelled. He was getting pissed of with Tess. She had no right to talk to Tess that way. She had no idea what Liz had been through this past year. Michael walked away, probably going to the desert to think.

“Well, I think I’ll leave too, since no one seems to want me around,” Tess said quietly, and she stormed off. Any stranger would have felt sorry for her but for those who knew her they knew that she was doing it for the attention. She just didn’t belong in their group.

Liz slowly opened her eyes and looked at the clock. “Holy shit!” Liz hopped out of bed. Well, she tried to hop out of bed but something was keeping her down. More like someone. She looked beside her and saw Max asleep on her bed, one arm draped lightly over her. She smiled to herself and moved Max’s arm and got quietly out of bed. Max stirred in his sleep and turned over. Liz walked to the bathroom to start getting ready for work. She knew she had missed half the day. It was already 12:00 p.m. She took a shower, brushed her teeth, and went back into her room to get some clothes. Max was awake and was looking at her when she stepped into her room in her bathrobe.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” Liz said.

“It’s late,” was all Max said.

“Come on,” Liz said pulling Max’s hand, “I need to get ready for work and you really should go home and do something with that hair.” Liz walked back into the bathroom to change into her uniform.

“Hey, Max, listen, I’m really sorry for breaking down last night. Sean asked some questions and I guess I couldn’t handle it.”

“It’s ok, it happens to everybody. This whole dating again is new to you. You’ll get used to it eventually.”

“Yeah, but it’s been almost a year. I should be over Tucker by now. I shouldn’t be crying every time someone asks me about him.” Max held his arms out and Liz walked to him. He held her for a moment before she pulled away and claimed that she had to get downstairs.

Max watched her as she walked out and said to himself,” Damn Tucker to hell.”

“Hey, Liz. Are you ok?” Maria asked when she saw Liz come downstairs. The Cafe was getting busy and Maria was glad that Liz had come down.

“I’m fine, I just overslept,” Liz said, not wanting to go into details. She loved Maria to death and she was one of her best friends but some things she could only talk to Max about.
“Did Sean ask questions about Tucker?”

“Some, yeah,” Liz replied. Maria could always tell when something was wrong. “I talked to Max last night, so I’m ok now.”

“Al right. Now lets go serve alien theme food to these undeserving customers. Oh, I forgot to tell you, Michael completely bitched out Tess this morning. She saying stuff about you and Max and he just blew up.”

Liz smiled, “I sorry I missed that.”

“Tess, was all like, ‘where is my Maxie-poo. He’s cheating on me. He doesn’t love me.’ I told her, honey, you have to give yourself to guys just to get them to hang out with you. I don’t even want to think about what you would do to get someone to love you.”

“I always miss the good stuff. What’s up with that?” Liz asked, and she started about her daily activities as if nothing had happened.

Max went home about five minutes after Liz went downstairs. To save some confusion, he left through the window with which he came. He walked over here so that meant he was stuck walking home in 90 degree weather. He was sweating by the time he got to his street, and he remembered a time not too long ago when he was running through here with only one thing on his mind. Liz.

~ Flashback ~

His feet were pounding on the concrete as he made his way to Tucker’s house. Liz had just left his house and he was going to do some serious damage to Tucker’s face. Hopefully he will leave some scars. He turned on to his street. Tucker lived by himself and lived only a couple of blocks away from Max. A few minutes later Max slowed to a walk. He was on Tucker’s street and he needed his energy to beat the shit out of him. He came to his house and knocked on the door. Nothing. He knocked a little louder and her rang the doorbell. Again, there was nothing. Max walked around the house to look in the window. It was empty. Tucker had skipped town.

~ End Flashback ~

Max got home and took a shower. He had thought about going to the Cafe but he knew that Tess would probably be there and he really didn’t want to deal with her. She was the only one who didn’t know about Liz and she would ask him why she spent the night with Liz. Max was lost in thought when Michael knocked on his window. Max opened it for him and Michael hopped in.

“So what happened last night Maxwell?” Michael asked as soon as his feet touched the floor.

“Maybe you should ask Liz that. I don’t know if it’s my business to tell.”

“Max! Tell me what the hell happened last night. Your not the only one who cares about her!”

“Fine, fine. When she went out with Sean last night he asked her questions about Tucker. He had heard some rumors and he wanted to know that whole story. Liz answered them the best she could without getting upset. I don’t think she told him anything, just that Tucker had done something to her. She got upset when she got home and when I came by to see how her date went I saw her crying in front of the mirror.” Max left out the part about her looking at her scar. Michael didn’t know that whole story about that and he knew that if he brought it out that Michael would want to know everything.

“Is she ok? I mean, emotionally, is she ok?”
“She’s fine now. But I don’t know how she’ll be on Monday when she sees Sean.”

“She already saw Sean. He’s at the Crashdown. I went back there to see Maria and I saw him there. I didn’t want to interrupt anything so I came here.”

“Max!” Max’s mom, Diane, called, “Tess is here!”

“Great,” Max mumbled.

“Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. I yelled at Tess earlier.”

“She was talking about Liz and stuff that she has no right to talk about.”

“That’s probably what she’s here about. Are you going to stick around or what?”

“No, I think I’ll head on out. Go and see if Maria’s done working yet.”

“See ya,” Max said and walked out the room. Tess was waiting for him in the living room. Max grabbed her hand and pulled her towards his room. He just wanted to get this over and done with. It just wasn’t worth it to him anymore.

“Hey Max,” said Tess, leaning in for a kiss. Max pecked her lips then pulled back.

“What’s going on?”

“Well, you didn’t meet us and when I found out that Liz was skipping work I got yelled at by Michael,” Tess put on her innocent face.

“Actually the story that I heard was that you were saying stuff that you shouldn’t have been saying.”

“Well, they’re wrong.”

“I’m sure they are,” Max agreed, “We are also wrong, Tess. This relationship I mean. It’s just not working out. Though I’m sure that I’ll call you if I ever need a booty call,” Max said and stood up, “You can leave now Tess.”

“Well....I was going to end it also, but you just got there first.”

“Sure, Tess, whatever. You’re right, I’m wrong, you’re good and I’m bad, the whole enchilada. So just leave Tess, I don’t want you here anymore.” Tess stood up and walked out the room without looking back. He knew he would have to deal with her on Monday but right now all he could think about was Liz. The way that she looked at him had his emotions in turmoil. It‘s all Tucker’s fault, Max thought. He punched his window in frustration and broke it. The glass shattering like his heart did when he thought of Liz.
