Title: Distorted Mirrors

Author: Kayarra A.

Email: kayarra00⊕yahoo.com

Rating: PG-13

Category: CC, I can’t really categorize anyone as a main couple, but Max/Liz are together. As are Michael/Maria and Isabel/Alex.

Summary: Post The Gift for Buffy and Post Sexual Healing Tess still comes to Roswell, but not as you think. Also, Buffy has a closer connection to the pod squad than ever thought.

Disclaimer:
Dear Mr. Katims,
You bastard!
Love and blessings,
Kayarra.
I own the idea, not the characters. Also, Joss Whedon rocks!

Authors Note: This is not my first crossover fic, but I hate my first one, so I thought that it would be nice to rewrite it after the episode, “The Gift” of Buffy. I live in a fantasyland, that’s why nothing after Sexual Healing of Roswell happened, but Destiny is brought into the picture. Don’t back out now, I swear it’s not as you think! Also, I’m not sure if I will bring Buffy back from the dead. Also, this is the junior year for the Roswell gang.

Also, some scenes are taken directly from Roswell or Buffy. I did that to move the story along and help the plot, also to help the people who haven’t seen “The Gift” of Buffy to get a general gist of what happened. I hope nothing’s wrong with that!

Dedicated: To spoiler buds, and mainly Kerry, 'cause she put up with me when I started this fic *big*

*Prologue*

* * * *
Dawn listen to me.

Listen.

I love you, I will *always* love you. But this is the work I have to do. Tell Giles…tell Giles I figured it out. And, and I’m okay. And give my love to my friends.

You have to take care of them now.

You have to take care of each other.

You have to be strong.

Dawn, the hardest thing in this world…is to live in it.

Be brave. Live.

For me.

Liz awoke, startled, beads of sweat dripped down her forehead.

She had that dream again…she’d been having it for weeks now. Every time she closed her eyes she would feel her self-falling as her body temperature rose, the same words would repeat inside her head.

She didn’t know what it was, who it was, or whom they were talking too. She racked her brain, trying to remember clues from her dreams.

For what seemed like hours she thought, and thought. She jumped out of bed as the names started coming to her and got a piece of paper and pen to write down some words.

Dawn.

Giles.

“Dawn…Giles,” she whispered the names to herself. She slammed the paper down in frustration when she didn’t recognize the names. She walked to bed and laid down, almost immediately falling asleep.

Buffy Anne Summers
1981-2001
Beloved Sister
Beloved Friend
She Saved the World.
A Lot.

Dawn, the hardest thing in this world…is to live in it.

Be brave.

Live.

For Me.

Liz awoke again in a panic; she had no idea who these people were, and why they were in her dreams. She didn’t know, but again, she knew. She couldn’t explain it, but for some reason she had a feeling that these people would become a part of her life.

She once again picked up the piece of paper and wrote down the name she next recognized from her dreams

Buffy Anne Summers.

She tracked her mind to think back on a person named Buffy but couldn’t think of one. She fell back in her bed, exhausted. Her eyes closed quickly and she fell asleep once again.

Never did she notice the aligning of the stars outside her bedroom window.

Part 1

Dawn sat in front of Buffy’s grave, not wanting to believe that Buffy was really in there.

Not wanting to believe that Buffy was really dead.

“Buffy,” she started in a choked up voice. “I don’t know what I could say that could ever make up for you…for you dying for me.”

She slowed as she fought for control of her emotions.

“I don’t know why you wouldn’t let me die, why you had to jump in and let me live. I would of died for you…for everyone.”

“Everyone misses you…when we told Angel that you had died…I’ll never forget the look on his face…it was terrible, almost as if someone took his soul again.”

“We haven’t been able to contact Riley yet…incase you were wondering. I guess he dropped off the face of the planet since he left.”

Dawn plucked a blade of grass from the ground and began twirling it between her fingers.

“They can’t find dad, so I’m being sent by the courts to go live with aunt Diane and her kids, Max and Isabel, in New Mexico…Roswell of all places.” She let out a little laugh.

“Anyways, I don’t know how long I’ll be there. I guess until they find dad or until I graduate.”

“I’m going to miss everyone here, but Xander, Anya, Willow, Giles, and Tara all promised they would come visit about a week after I get there and settled in.”

The tears began to trail down her face once again.

“I just miss you so much Buffy. I don’t know what I’m going to do without my sister.” As she broke down in dangerous sobs, strong arms engulfed her in a tight hug.

Xander held the sobbing girl in his arms, a few tears escaping when he stared at Buffy’s grave.

He missed Buffy too, but he spent so much time being strong for every one else that hadn’t really mourned her yet, hadn’t really absorbed the fact that she was gone.

“Shh Dawn,” he whispered to her.

“It’s all going to be okay,” he tried to convince her.

“Everything is going to be okay.”

Dawn shook her head as the sobs finally ceased.

“I don’t think anything is ever going to be okay again.”

* * * *

Liz tossed and turned in her sleep before finally opening her eyes. Almost as if it were waiting a transparent figure, a girl, had appeared to the right of her bed.

“What do you want?!” Liz gasped out in shock and fright. Too much was happening to her that she couldn’t understand.

The figure moved closer to her.

“Zan mentioned you were beautiful…he wasn’t lying. I’m almost jealous.”

“What are you talking about? Who are you?” Liz nearly screamed out.

“That’s not important…yet,” The figure turned and pointed to the V consolation out sides of Liz’s bedroom window.

“See those stars?”

Liz nodded her head ever so slightly.

“Within these stars lie your destiny,” the figure proclaimed.

“What do you mean?”

The girl’s eyes went blank.

The exact opposite of her knowledge filled eyes from mere minutes ago.

“I’m sorry,” the girl whispered, regret etched in her voice.

“For what?”

“For dying.”

“Why would you apologize to me about that? I don’t understand!” The confusion Liz was feeling was making her nearly hysterical.

“You’ll see.”

The girl changed the subject, almost as quickly as it had been brought up.

“Promise me you’ll watch over her for me.”

“Watch over who?”

“Dawn.”

With that the girl disappeared. Liz wasn’t able to sleep for hours.

The group, plus a tired Liz sat around the Evans’ living room for an emergency meeting the Evans’ twins called.

Max and Liz sat in the love seat with Liz’s head on his shoulders while Isabel, Alex, Maria, and Michael all sat down on the long chair that was across from them.

“So, why’d you call this meeting?” an anxious Maria asked.

“Our mom and dad went to go pick up our cousin who’s going to be living here from now on…we need to be careful and avoid talking about aliens and such when she’s around.” Max answered in a serious tone.

As expected Michael’s outburst came almost immediately.

“Which cousin? How old is this cousin? Why the hell is your cousin staying here? Are you sure he or she isn’t FBI?”

Max and Isabel rolled their eyes before Max answered.

“She’s only 15 and a freshmen in high school. She’s staying here because two months ago her mother, our mom’s sister, died of a brain aneurysm and two weeks ago her older sister, who happened to be her guardian, was killed. She would of stayed with her father, but they can’t find him.” Max answered with a tremor of sadness in his voice. He hadn’t met Buffy before, but he had met Dawn once and the girl didn’t deserve all this pain and heartache.

“She is to feel welcome here, she’s had it bad this last year,” Max continued, staring pointedly at Michael.

Everyone nodded his or her heads quickly after hearing the news about this girl’s life she had to endure for the past year.

“When is she coming and what’s her name?” Maria asked, as her eyes filled with tears. She made an immediate pact with herself to make sure the girl would feel welcome and have a friend in her.

Isabel answered this question. “She should be here in three hours and her name is Dawn.” She told them

No one noticed the recognition that appeared on Liz’s face. Her eyes widened in shock as she remembered the name from her dreams and the girl who told her to watch over her.

“What…what was her sisters name?” Liz cautiously asked them, silently praying it wasn’t what she thought it was.

“Buffy…Buffy Summers,” Isabel answered. She caught the way Liz’s face paled when the name was said. “Do you know her?”

Liz swallowed down the bile rising in her throat.

“No…no I don’t.”

Guys, bad news, Breathing part 14 is in my locker at school. I had most of it done and I was planning on writing out the rest this weekend. I'm sorry...blame it on teenage idiocy.

Part 2

Dawn watched the bustling of the Albuquerque Airport as she sat and waited for her aunt to pick her up. She had shared her tearful goodbyes, but her eyes were still watery from the pain she felt deep in her heart.

“Are you alright dear?” an old woman asked Dawn, while sitting next to her.

Dawn looked up, startled at the intrusion. “I’m-I’m fine,” she told the woman.

The woman grabbed her hand in a firm grip. “You are an old soul…so much pain, so much heartache,” she whispered in a monotone voice.

“How do you know that?” Dawn asked in wonder. She had no idea who this woman was.

“She is watching over you, making sure you are okay…helping you,” the woman concluded. She stood up suddenly, as if she were in a hurry to get somewhere else.

“I have to go now young one. Be well.” She said before quickly walking off.

Dawn watched the woman walk off, mystified at what had transpired between them. She let out a loud gasp when she felt a hand on her shoulders.

“Dawn dear, I’m sorry I’m late…traffic was bad coming up here,” Mrs. Evans started as her greeting.

“Hi Aunt Diane,” Dawn whispered with reservation. She liked her aunt, but she didn’t really know her to be that comfortable around her yet.

Dawn stood up and grabbed her bags. “Here I’ll get that for you,” Diane intercepted. She grabbed the largest bag of the two bags and began to exit the airport with Dawn trailing behind her.

Once they were in the car and driving Diane attempted to strike up conversation again.

“Philip had to work today and Max and Isabel are doing the teenager thing,” Diane stated, trying to explain why she was the only one they’re to pick her up.

Dawn nodded her head. “Okay.” She said shortly.

“You’ll fit right in West Roswell High. You’ve got Max, Isabel and all their friends to show you around.” Diane started once again to strike up conversation.

Dawn nodded once more. “Alright.”

An awkward silence followed before Diane began to talk again. “I’m really sorry about what happened this past year…to you, to your family.” She said in a soothing tone.

Dawn’s eyes filled with tears once more and her voice choked with emotion. “Thank you.” She managed to utter out.

Diane released one of her hands from the steering wheel and patted Dawn’s arm. A look of understanding passed between them as Diane began telling Dawn about the places in Roswell as the two shared a few chuckles. As she pulled into the driveway of her house the nervousness settled back in.

Diane must have noticed because she reached over and patted Dawn’s hand.

“Don’t worry Dawnie,” she said using Dawn’s childhood nickname.

“Everything is going to be okay.”

Dawn nodded and helped hold the bags while Diane opened the front door.

Diane looked upon the empty living room, with Dawn on her heels. “Max! Isabel!” she called, a bit of impatience tingling in her voice.

“We’re here mom,” a young male voice called out. Diane and Dawn both turned toward the voice and saw Max standing with Isabel, Liz, Alex, Maria, and Michael.

The pang of nervousness hit Dawn once again when she realized that so many people were there.

“Hey Dawn,” Max said, knowing that this must be hard for her.

“Hi Max, Hi Isabel,” Dawn whispered, peering over their shoulders to see the people behind them.

Isabel’s eyes trailed her gaze. “Hey Dawn…this is Liz, Alex, Maria, and Michael,” Isabel introduced while pointing at each one of them in turn.

They exchanged greeting and were soon left in an uncomfortable silence.

Diane clapped her hands together. “Well! Now everyone knows each other, Max be a gentlemen and show Dawn to her new room.” Diane commanded of her son.

Max nodded his head and quickly grabbed Dawn’s biggest suitcase. And waited for Dawn to follow him up the stairs.

Once they were inside her room Max turned to Dawn.

“So, this is the room you’re going to be staying in for a while.” Max told her.

Dawn nodded her head and proceeded to drop her luggage on the bed as she gazed at the pink curtains and bedspread.
“I don’t like pink,” she told Max.

“Okay, we have blue, white, and purple…mom wasn’t sure which color you liked, so she go nearly everyone in the rainbow,” Max stated with a small laugh.

Dawn gave him a small smile. “If it’s okay, I want the purple.”

Max quickly nodded. “Sure, just let me get the sheets and stuff,” he said while backing out of the room. No more than 2 minutes later he came back with the set. Soon he had changed the bed and the curtains.

“There you go.” He said, inching towards the door.

“Thank you Max,” Dawn quietly said.

Max turned towards the door and made an exit before stopping abruptly. “Dawn, I hope you know that everything will be okay.”

Dawn let out an exasperated sigh. “I wish everyone would stop saying that…nothing is going to be okay again…nothing.” She told him.

Max looked at her, ready to convince her otherwise when he saw the shut down look on her face. He knew she wanted to be alone and he wouldn’t get anything out of her.

“I don’t believe that Dawn, but if you need someone to talk to. I’m here.” He told her.

Dawn nodded, for what seemed like the hundredth time that day.

“Thank you.”

* * * *

His dark heavy boots trailed through the graveyard in the darkness of midnight. He had traveled, walked, all the way from Los Angeles to Sunnydale to see her grave.

He’d only been once, but he couldn’t stay for long that time. The emotions running through him had been too strong. He had to leave.

So for the second time he was trying to visit her grave again. His legs willed to stop at her grave as kneeled down in front of it, not knowing what to do, or what to say. He stared at her grave for what seemed like hours before he began to speak.

“Buffy…” he started. “I don’t know how to say this…or what to say to you. You’re dead,” he stated as if he didn’t quite believe it.

He twirled the daisy he had in his hand between his fingers. Daisy’s reminded him of sunshine and sunshine reminded him of Buffy.

“I’m sorry that I wasn’t good to you…that I didn’t help you enough,” he said, staring at the engraving.

“Maybe if I would of taken the Glory situation more seriously you would still be alive, Dawn would have never gotten captured, and no one would be mourning your death.”

He took in a deep breath as he searched for his final words.

“I want to make a promise to you Buffy. That whoever this new slayer is…I won’t let down. I’ll help train, I’ll help…I’ll help her stay alive.”

“A bloody shame isn’t it mate?” a drunken slur broke Angel out of his miserable daze.

“What do you want Spike?” Angel asked him without looking up.

“I don’t want a bloody thing. I jus’ want to say goodbye to Buffy,” Spike replied as he joined Angel at his side.

“I thought you hated her,” Angel asked.

“I was freakin’ in love with her!” Spike exclaimed, scaring the birds out of the tree above them.

“She didn’t love me though. If it wasn’t about you, Angel, it was about Riley, if it wasn’t about Riley, she was mad about the robot. The lass was never easy to please,” Spike said with a smile tinting on his face.

The smile evaporated from his face.

“But I still miss 'er.”

* * * *

The young curly haired blond girl stepped off the bus into Roswell.

“Finally…” she whispered, her voice lethal.

She gazed at the scenery.

“Roswell-freaking-New Mexico,” she muttered to herself.

She shook her head then smiled.

She wouldn’t die again…this time she would win.

Part 3

Liz rolled herself out of her bed in the middle of the night. There were so many things going on inside of her head that she couldn’t sleep. She had finally connected the girls in her dreams to reality.

The girl who was haunting her…Buffy Summers, and the girl she was supposed to protect. Dawn Summers. She just couldn’t figure out what it was about them that made her have to protect Dawn.

And why her?

She wasn’t weak, but she wasn’t exactly superhuman either. She stood in front of the mirror, staring at herself, trying to find something, anything, that made her so special.

She stared and when she saw nothing she closed her eyes and tried to ease her frustrations.

“You’re never going to find anything,” a voice called out.

Liz opened her eyes and gasped when she saw the same figure that was haunting her.

“When I first found out about it, I looked in the mirror too…but there are no apparent changes unfortunately…sorry.” The figure continued.

“Buffy…” she breathed out, fear making her bones stiff.

“Glad you know my name Liz, real time saver.” Buffy said while walking closer to her.

“STOP! Please…don’t coming any closer.” Liz pleaded of Buffy.

Buffy nodded and ceased her walking.

“What do you want from me? Why do I have to protect Dawn? I don’t understand!” Liz gasped out in one breath as the tears fell down her face.

“You have to listen to me Liz…I know you don’t understand, that’s why I’m here. I have to prepare you.” Buffy said sternly, willing Liz to calm down.

“Teach me what?” Liz asked.

“Who you are.” Buffy pointed the V shaped consolation, like she did the previous time. “Two destinies Liz…you have two.”

“What do you mean?” Liz asked, her eyes full of confusion.

“In the beginning you only had one. Then Zan changed things…you know, when he healed you.”

Liz turned pale and wobbled on her feet. She grabbed the mirror to steady herself. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I've never been healed before,” Liz stated, trying to regain her composure.

Buffy let out an exasperated sigh. “Look in the mirror Liz.” She commanded.

Liz slowly lifted her eyes and stared into the mirror. She then gasped in shock. The scene, everything that happened the last fall played in front of her.

“You are sooo bad girl, oh and Max Evans is staring at you,” the shorthaired Maria told Liz.

“No way,” Liz responded in an unbelieving voice. “Maria, that is so in your imagination.” Liz turned to Max and locked eyes with him for a brief moment before he broke contact. “Max Evans? This? No, un uh, it’s not-“

“And those cheeks! Preciosita tan linda!” Maria interrupted joyfully.

“Maria!” Liz scolded her friend. “And, and even if it weren’t I’m going out with Kyle. I mean, he’s steady and loyal and he appreciates me.”

“Sounds like your describing a poodle.” Maria told her dryly.

All of the sudden a fight broke out and a shot pierced through Liz’s body. Max ran up to her and put his hand on her stomach, over the wound, healing it.

“You’re alright now. You’re alright.”

“You broke a bottle when you fell, spilled ketchup on yourself. Don’t say anything. Please.”

She watched Max run out of the Crashdown and looked at herself as she gazed after Max, a dazed look on her face.

Suddenly, the images stopped and she turned back to Buffy, and stared at her, not knowing what to say.

When Zan healed you, fate…destiny came into place.” Buffy initiated.

“Why do you keep calling him Zan? His name is Max.” Liz told her.

Buffy titled her head to the side and let out a small smile. “Oh yes. He goes by the name Max now, doesn’t he?” Buffy asked her.

Liz nodded her head in confusion.

“He’s always been Max.”

Buffy laughed in amusement.

“Let’s just say I knew him before he was Max.”

“Anyways,” Buffy continued, not allowing Liz to ask any further questions. “You have to help Dawn.”

“Why Dawn? Not to sound cruel, but, what is so special about her?” Liz asked.

“Dawn’s blood…our blood, opens the portal between Hell and Earth,” Buffy stated.

Liz felt the nausea rise up her throat as she replayed the words in her head. “Dawn’s blood…our blood, opens the portal between Hell and Earth.”

“Do you want to know how I died?” Buffy asked her.

Liz wanted to say no, but she also needed to know. She slowly nodded her head, signaling Buffy to continue.

“Dawn was captured earlier this month by Glory, a demon who wanted her blood to open the portal. I killed Glory, but Dawn’s blood still was let loose…in order from keeping the world from going to hell, either Dawn or I had to sacrifice our lives. I went for her.”

The tears tingled in Liz’s eyes as she heard the story. “I’m so sorry.” She told Buffy.

Buffy shrugged. “I would do anything for Dawn. Besides, it’s my job.”

The confusion came back in Liz’s mind full force. “What do you mean it was your job?”

“Your job now. Don’t be so confused. They’re coming and they’re going to explain…he promised.” Buffy told her.

“Who’s coming? Who is he? I still don’t understand,” Liz rambled.

Buffy began to slowly fade out.

“NO!” Liz shouted. “Wait!” Liz began to panic, she had more questions, and there was more she needed to know.

Buffy gave her a sad smile. “Sorry Liz,” she whispered before fading away completely.

Liz looked around the empty room and slowly walked back to here bed and climbed back in, willing her self to forget what she learned just a few minutes ago.

She closed her eyes and forced herself into slumber.

* * * *

“Here,” Buffy said to Dawn.

“Buffy it hurts,” Dawn wailed. The blood on her feet growing in a rapid pace.

“I've got it. Come here, you’re going to be okay.” Buffy told her. Buffy walked with a limping Dawn before Dawn stopped and turned to her.

“Go!” Buffy said, not understanding why she stopped.

“Buffy, it’s started.” Dawn told her. Buffy turned and they both saw the portal open.

“I’m sorry,” Dawn said, tears falling down her face.

“It doesn’t matter.”

Dawn hurried, trying to run past Buffy but stopping when Buffy grabbed on to her.

“What are you doing?” Buffy asked.

“I have to jump. The energy.” Dawn told her frantically.

“It’ll kill you,” Buffy stated.

“I know,” Dawn, whispered. “Buffy, I know about the ritual. I have to stop it.”

“No.” Buffy stated firmly.

“I have to. Look at what’s happening.” Dawn said.

They both looked up as lightning cracked and a huge dragon flew out of the portal.

“Buffy you have to let me go. Blood starts it, and until the blood stops flowing, it’ll never stop.” Dawn told her.

Buffy stared at Dawn in anguish.

“You have to let me,” Dawn told her, tears falling down her face. “It has to have the blood.”

Buffy frowned, and then turned.

“Buffy, no!” Dawn shouted.

“I have to Dawnie,” Buffy stated.

“No!” Dawn continued to shout.

Buffy held Dawn in her arms as Dawn began to cry.

“Dawn listen to me. Be brave. Live, for me.”

Buffy kissed her on the cheek and turned, running down the platform before jumping off.

“BUFFY!” Dawn shouted. “BUFFY!”

* * * *

Dawn felt herself being shaken awake. She slowly opened her eyes to see Diane pulling her into a comforting hug and Max, Philip, and Isabel looking on in worry.

“Are you okay Dawn?” Diane asked her.

Dawn nodded and realized she must have screamed in her sleep.

“Yea, I fine.” She reached her hand to wipe the tears that fell on her face.

“Okay, well if you’re sure, we’ll leave,” Diane said hesitantly.

Dawn nodded again and watched as the four filed out of her room. Once they were gone she turned her body and faced the wall as she held her pillow in her arms. The tears began to come again as she stared at the wall.

“Something’s coming…” she whispered to herself.

*Part 4*

Satan you know where I lie
Gently I go into that goodnight
All our lives got complicated
Search for pleasure overrated
Never armed our souls
For what the future would hold
When we were innocent
Innocent.

Angels lend me your might
Forfeit all my lives to get just one right
All those colors long since faded
All our smiles confiscated
Never were we told
We’d be bought and sold
When we were innocent

Liz rang the doorbell to Max’s house, hoping to be able to talk to Dawn. She had tried her hardest to forget about the dreams and everything that was happening, but this morning she had remembered everything, much to her chagrin

The door opened revealing Max, who had a wide smile on his face.

“Hey Liz...I didn’t know you were coming over today.” Max greeted. He lowered his head to give Liz a kiss on her lips, which Liz returned.

“Hi Max,” Liz said once the kiss broke apart. “Is Dawn here?” she asked him.

“Yeah she’s upstairs.” Max said. He took a closer look at Liz and noticed the dark circles under her eyes and her. “Liz are you okay?” he asked with concern etched in his voice.

“Yea, I’m fine. Why do you ask?” Liz asked him nervously, she had hoped that she all the evidence of fatigue had disappeared already.

“You just look tired,” Max told her.

“Yea, well, I stayed up all night yesterday watching movie.” She let out a little laugh, hoping that her answer to him seemed sincere.

“Okay…” Max replied unconvinced.

“So…can I talk to Dawn?” Liz said, trying to get the conversation back on track.

“Sure, sure,” Max turned around, motioning Liz to follow him.

“How has she been acting?” Liz asked him as they were walking towards there room.

“She’s been quiet mainly, writing in her journal or listening to music…she hasn’t really talked to anyone in the house yet.” Max turned to face Liz when they stopped in front of Dawn’s door. “I hope you can get through to her Liz.” Max added.

“I hope I can too.”

Max nodded then knocked on Dawn’s door.

“Yeah?” They heard Dawn call out.

“Dawn it’s me, Max. Can I come in?”

“Yeah.” Dawn hesitantly replied. Max opened the door to see Dawn standing there. “Yeah Max?” Dawn asked, while curiously looking at Liz who was standing next to him.

“Uh, my girlfriend Liz wants to talk to you.” Max informed her.

Dawn nodded slowly, giving Liz a good once over. “Alright, sure.”

Liz slowly entered the room, motioning Max to leave, who left and closed the door behind him.

“So how are you doing Dawn? I mean with everything that has been going on, I was wondering if you’ve been okay.” Liz said awkwardly, trying to forward the conversation.

“I’m fine.” She stated.

“Look Liz, if this is some kind of pity party, then I don’t need it. I don’t want to talk about…especially with someone I don’t even know.” Dawn said crossly.

“That’s not the only reason I’m here Dawn. I need to know something.” Liz stated.

Dawn looked at her curiously, and then crossed her arms in front of her in a protective manner. “What do you need to know?”

“Buffy.” Liz started. She paused when she saw the flash of pain come across Dawn’s face. “Was there anything…special about her?”

The warning bells went off in Dawn’s head. “I don’t know what you mean.” Dawn stated quickly with a slight tremor in her voice.

“You do know what I mean. I know how she died.” Liz provided.

Dawn felt her veins go to ice. “What do you mean?” She asked tightly.

“Glory. She opened…your blood opened some portal between Hell and Earth. Buffy had to sacrifice herself to save the world.” Liz rambled.

Dawn turned pale as she realized Liz knew everything about her sister’s death. “How did you know that?” she asked Liz in a fierce whispered tone.

“Dreams…I've been having dreams about it and yesterday she told me that it was my job now…and that someone was coming.” Liz said in one breath. “What is my job and who are these people?” she ended with a plea.

Dawn fingered the choker on her neck. “Dreams…” she whispered. She thought back hard at what Buffy told her before about her having dreams that involved the previous slayers when she first became one. She turned and looked at Liz with realization.

She was the new slayer.

Dawn turned to Liz in sympathy.

“You’re the new slayer.” She stated.

Liz’s eyes showed confusion, which wasn’t masked in her voice. “What do you mean?”

“In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer.” Dawn stated, her eyes unmoving. She had memorized the speech from Giles along time ago.

Liz sat down slowly on Dawn’s bed as the shock hit her. She wanted to scream, shout out at Dawn for lying to her, but she knew deep down that it was true.

She felt it.

Dawn walked towards Liz and sat next to her on the bed. “Are you okay?”

Liz shook her head as the tears began to escape from her eyes. “No…I’m not.”

Her distress made the tears well up in Dawn’s eyes. She had seen what her sister had went through during her years as a slayer, and she knew it would only get worse for Liz…that she would suffer the same fate as all slayers.

Liz stood and went to the window and watched the scenery. “How bad is it going to be?” she asked, still facing the window.

Dawn thought to herself, wondering if she should tell her or not. She contemplated lying, but Liz needed to know…her life depended on it. “Liz…it’s going to be pretty bad.”

Liz nodded as she continued to gaze outside. “You never told me who those other people were.” She stated.

“Uh, Buffy called them the Scooby Gang.” Dawn said with a smile. “There’s Willow, who’s a witch…Tara who’s also witch, Anya, who’s an ex-demon, Xander, who’s more of a protector, Giles, who’s the watcher, Angel, who’s a vampire with a soul, Spike who’s vampire without a soul, but can’t bite anyone…that’s it.” Dawn told her enthusiastically, she missed everyone.

Liz let out a little laugh. This was the people she was supposed to get to know…supposed to lean on. “Strange group of friends.” She let out another small laugh. She was the one to talk…her friends were aliens.

Liz finally turned around and faced Dawn. “I need you to tell me everything. Even if it’s bad…I need to know what I’m getting into…if I want to do this.”

Dawn shook her head. “You don’t understand Liz…you have no choice.”

“It’s your destiny.”

She stared in the bathroom mirror as she brushed her golden blond locks. She frowned as her arms got tired from the constant lifting she had to do.

“Jashurat, come!” she called out.

“Yes miss?” a red one-eyed demon said as he entered the bathroom.

“Brush my hair.” She commanded as she handed him the brush.

The demon nodded as he proceeded to brush her hair. “When are we going to attack?” he quietly asked, scared she would snap at him.

She let out a sigh of exasperation. “I have to find the damn slayer first. Then gotta find the Evans’, that’s where that little bitch Dawn is living now.”

The demon nodded. “How do you plan on finding out?”

Glory looked at her nails. “I heard they all go to the high school here…with this pathetic little teenage body they gave me I should fit right in.” Her normally blue eyes flashed red as she smiled again.

“I swear whoever this new slayer is, is going to wish she was never born…”

“…Her fate will be worse than Buffy’s.”
