The four in which this story takes place…

Elizabeth Claudia Parker and Maxwell Philip Evans had been seeing each other for the past five years. Two hearts entwined into one. Two halves of one soul…

Elizabeth Parker, Liz, was beginning to believe that Max would never decide that he was ready to take the next step. It wasn’t that he was afraid of commitment, otherwise they wouldn’t have been together so long, but he just decided that you shouldn’t screw up a good thing if you have it.

Sorting through a pile of mail, Liz found a plain letter with her name on the front. No mailing address, return address, or stamp. Just a blank white envelope with three letters on the front written in a bright red: L I Z. Quickly opening the letter Liz found a note inside:

You can reach me by railway, You can reach me by trailway.
You can reach me by airplane, You can reach me with your mind.

There are hills and there are mountains between us.
Always something to get over.
And if I have had my way, darling you’d be closer.

Just get here if you can.

Go upstairs and look for the next card…

Max

Quickly placing the card on the counter Liz ran to the bedroom that Max and her had shared for the past year and found another white envelope with her name on it accompanied by a white rose. Inside this card read:

I wish the stars,
The stars in the sky would come down to me
So I could give them to you.

Close your eyes and turn around.

Max

Not knowing what the expect Liz did what she was told and turned closed her eyes and slowly turned around. The nervousness was getting to her. Liz couldn’t understand what Max could have up his sleeve.

“Open your eyes.” She heard him whisper.

Doing as she was told Liz slowly led her lids open and the light, or lack thereof, hit her pupils. The sight before her was one she never thought she would see. Max was down on one knee before her, and as she realized what was happening, tears began to flood her eyes.

“Please don’t cry, but I need to get this all out.”
“Mmhmm.”
“I’ve never wanted to upset you or make you cry. I’ve only ever wanted to make you happy. To make you smile. It took me a while to realize that this is the right step to take, and that it should have been taken a long time ago. Elizabeth Parker, I love you with all of my heart and soul. I would be nothing without you. I want to spend my life growing old with you. I want nothing more than to be 80 years old sitting around knowing that I’ve lived a wonderful life because you were in it. You are my everything. I promise to love you always and forever. Will you make me the happiest and luckiest man on Earth and give me the honor of having you as my wife.”

She uttered no words as she lowered until she was eye to eye with him. And did nothing more but plant her lips to his and ever so slowly nod her head, and with that he slipped the diamond onto her finger.

Liz Evans walked up the isle quietly, her face filled with a thought of reflection as she ran her thumb over the diamond Max had given her. She then slowly raised her right hand and place it on top of the gravestone that read:

Maxwell Philip Evans
Loving husband and father
“Always and Forever”

As the tears silently fell down her face the only thought that passed through Liz’s mind was “Always and forever, that is how long I will love you my darling.”
