~*~There's a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind
And the reason it's still standing
It was strong enough to bend

For years, we have stayed together
As lovers and as friends
What we have will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you say something that you can't take back
Big wind blows and you hear a little crack
When you say "Hey well I might be wrong"
You can sway with the wind till the storm is gone

Sway with the wind till the storm is gone
Like a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind
Our love will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you start thinkin' that you know it all
Big wind blows and a branch will fall
When you say "Hey this job takes two"
We can sway with the wind till the skies turn blue

My Love-
Time passes slower when you're alone. Have you ever noticed that? When you're in the arms of the one you love, the wind seems soft. But when you're alone...the wind is loud and scary. When the lightning lights up the sky, I think of you. I wonder if you're up there, watching the lightning from front row seats.

You've been gone for a year. At least in my time. A year of coldness, and darkness. A year of lonliness. A year of wind. I can't say that I don't miss you. Because you know I would be lying. At least I think you would know. After you gave me back the Christmas present I had given to you, I fell apart. You left with Tess and you never came back. Ava said you changed me. But I already knew that. Knowing you just changed me...but not like I said.

Max Evans, I want to die for you. I can't have a normal life because I would always be comparing it to the one I had with you. I'm scared now, and I'm alone. Isabel and Alex got married, and you weren't there to smile at her when she turned around to get comforted as her last second being single. Michael was.

You were never there when Michael needed a best man. That was Alex. And when Maria needed Michael advice...you weren't there to give her any. That was Isabel. You effected so many people. I know you're probably thinking if I'm together with Kyle. But, I'm not. Kyle blamed me for Tess leaving. He knows I hated her...and he thinks that me getting Kyle to pretend to sleep with me drove you to take Tess and leave. Isabel and Michael...they blame me too. In a way I know Maria does. But, I'm her best friend...or at least I thought I was. Do you see now who you effected? I'm not mad that you left. Or rather maybe I am.

Yes, you read that right. I pretended to sleep with Kyle. I'm not going to tell you why. Then you'll end up falling in love with me again. See, I can't let that happen. I'm not proud of what I said to you...I never meant a word of it. I don't know why I'm writing this...maybe it's to finally get closure and to say I'm sorry. How do I address this though?
King Zan
Palace, Antar
Billions of Stars Away

I doubt that would go well with the postal workers. They'd think I was nuts... well the whole world thinks that. I know you're asking why and I can answer this question. It's because I left Roswell. And when I left I left with no heart, just the memories of you etched in my brain. I had to tell someone our story. I had to get it out. So one night, on a stormy night like this one I decided to write our story.

Once I started I couldn't stop. I finished the book in months. When it got published, it got put down in the category of Science Fiction. Michael and Isabel were furious at me. I let out their secret to the whole world. I never came up with an ending. The only thing I could put was that once you walked out of my window... my world ended, and I had no idea if I could ever go back to the desolate world I once knew.

Critics said the book was based on non fact. That's why it's called Fiction assholes! Others, loved the story and said it was the new Romeo and Juliet. That's when I broke down. Do you remember how I told you that Romeo and Juliet was a tragedy? Well why was our life like that? When you saved me Max...you gave me a world of possibilities. Where did that world go?

Do you ever think about me? Are you and Tess together? Do you miss me at all? All these questions I have inside my head are never going to be answered and I can live with that. I just wish that I could see you one more time. That way I would know you were alive and little shreds of my heart could come back. Do you know what I did with the money I earned from the book?

I sent it to orphanages and hospitals. Children around the world are happy because our life, our story, was a best selling tragedy. And this letter...well it's going to go into one of my books...and I'm going to send it to the post office. I'll put down Max Evans. And maybe they'll find you one day. Because God knows I've tried and I haven't succeeded.

I can only hope you'll forgive me one day. I haven't forgiven myself yet. I'm not trying to blame this all on you...I just...I miss you is all. I have no one to talk to. No one to love. And no one to love me. I miss you Max Evans.

Love always,
Liz Parker--Forever yours.

A tear went down his cheek as he closed the note up, for the first time. Holding the book close to him, he put the letter in his pocket and leaned against the chair.

"Here goes nothing." He whispered. He scrutinized the book cover to see a cartoon women looking at a cartoon man. The women's shadow was human while the man's was alien. He cracked a smile and opened up the book.

Liz sobbed and crawled over to her favorite chair. Tonight was like the other nights. She drank so much that her legs decided not to work for her at the moment. She cradled the wine bottle to her chest as she curled up under the big blanket. Staring at her lap top screen Liz went to Microsoft Word. For hours she sat looking at the blank screen before she typed in 'Meet Me Halfway' .

"Hello, my lovely computer screen." she mumbled taking a swig from the bottle. Her head hurt like hell but it was a comfort to her. She wrote when she was drunk so the emotions wouldn't come and hit her like an unexpected title wave.

"Max Evans you better know you loved I." she slurred. After giggling at her words she put her hands on the keys.

I was naive and young. A perfect candidate for love. It was September 1999 and I thought my life was simple. Not perfect, no. Perfect was this feeling that I would have inside me. It would make my stomach tumble again and again. I had high hopes and dreams. Living in a small town like Roswell, New Mexico could do that to you. I lived in an apartment above the restaurant owned by my parents. Living above it automatically meant I had to work in it. My best friend, Maria Deluca worked right along beside me.

Her dad had left her when she was young, letting her expectations go for both her career and lovelife in the future. She was quirky and loud while I was shy and quiet. I got great grades and was every parent's wet dream. I had a great boyfriend, the son of the Sheriff. He was steady, loyal, and he appreciated me. Maria saw him as a poodle. But Kyle wasn't the only one to set his eyes on me. The other was Max Evans.

Just seeing him made my heart weaken. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. I had the perfect life. Until September 18, 1999. That day, was like a storm on a clear day. Everything was fine until BOOM. There came the storm. It was around three or four in the afternoon and I was again teasing and joking around with some alien nut customers.

* "Are you guys here for the crash festival?" I asked.
Jennifer (Tourist #2): "Yea, can't wait. So...does your family come from Roswell?" Jennifer, the girl tourist asked me excited. Beside her, the guy looked at Jennifer and then to me.
"Just four generations." I replied cooly.
"Uh, well, does anyone in your family have stories about the UFO crash?" Larry, the guy, wondered.
"Well, I guess it would be O.K. to show you guys this...." I pulled out a fake picture of a manufactured alien. Maria walked past me with coffee and shook her head smiling. This wasn't the first time I had joked around with the tourists coming in for the Crash Festival. I walked away from the table and met Maria. She shook her head at me and told me that Max Evans was looking at me again.
I looked over at Max and his friend Michael sitting in the booth. I faked a laugh and shook my head. "Maria, this," I said pointing to myself, "and Max Evans, no!" I protested. "And I'm going out with Kyle! He's steady, and loyal, and he appreciates me."
"Sounds like you're describing a poodle!" she said. Suddenly two of the guys that Maria was serving started to fight. The second guy owed the first one some money. He pulled out a gun and one of the men swung it away from his direction. Everyone in the cafe dropped to the ground except me. The gun went off and hit me in my abdomen. At the time I could only think of my parents, and my friends. Then Max came over and did the most miraculous thing. He saved me. He placed his hand over my bullet wound and we connected. It was like a slide show was going on inside of my head.
"You broke the bottle when you fell. Please don't say anything." He mumbled before cracking the ketchup bottle and spilling it's contents onto me. He jumped up and ran out of the cafe, getting looks from others. I stood up astounded. As I watched him drive away...I watched my heart go along with him. *

That moment, that Max and I connected, I knew. I knew that that was the moment that he was mine.

His eye's grew wide reading the chapter. It was short, but there were about 2,000 and something pages. His, Michael's, Isabel's, Liz's...god everyone's life was in this book. He shuddered and glanced at the last sentence. That moment, that Max and I connected, I knew. I knew that that was the moment that he was mine. Ya, sure Liz. Guess Kyle was 'yours' too huh? He thought to himself in disgust. He glanced at the blonde lying down in bed. He thought he saw her move and he pressed a button. Suddenly a young nurse walked in.
"Is everything ok?" she asked. Max looked over at the bed and shook his head. "I think she moved!" he replied. The nurse cracked a smile and walked over to the bed. "I doubt that very much Mr. Evans. See she's in a c-o-m-a. There's no way she could of moved." the nurse replied. "But, she did move!" he said looking down at the ground. "Why don't you go get some coffee?" she suggested. Max looked up and nodded. "Of course." he replied dryly before leaving the room. As soon as he was gone the nurse, Kayarra, scowled.
"There is NO way you can wake up!" she hissed at the blonde. She tugged at her hair and held back the urge to slap her. Max entered again with a white styrafoam cup of coffee. He smiled tightly at Kayarra. She nodded at him and turned back to the sheets.
"If you ever decide to wake up, I will personally put you back into a coma. Later Bitch." Kayarra whispered. She quickly got up and looked at Max.
"So, what'd ya say to her?" he questioned.
"I just told her to get better for you!" Kayarra chirped. "Just try to relax and read your book. It's quite well." she mumbled. Max looked after her as she left before saying his head. He glanced back at Tess quickly and sat back down. He sipped the coffee and almost choked.
"It's almost as bad as hospital food!" He spat out. A doctor walked by the room right then and glared at him. Max shook his head and grabbed the book.
"Where was I?" Max asked shifting through the pages. Ah, Chapter Two.
Chapter 2 Heads Up For The Wrecking Ball
Sounds like Once Upon A Time. That was my first take on what happened. Max was my Prince Charming, rescuing me. And I was of course the damsel in distress. Well a damsel in distress who had a brain. Believe me I was greatful to Max Evans for saving my life. I hadn't even really thought about it until later that night, when the Sheriff was at the restaurant...
* "Lizzie. Oh my God!!" My dad yelled running towards me, looking at the 'ketchup' on my uniform.
"No, dad, dad look, look at this. See, I'm fine, I-I just spilled ketchup, I'm really, I'm okay." I said forcefully and nervously.
"Are you sure?" My dad asked hesitantly.
"Yea." I replied, giving my dad my 100 watt smile.
"The guy with the gun was kind of like a, like a muscular Beavis. And...the other one was like a, like a beefy Butthead." Maria decribed waving her hands in the hair, trying to remember them exactly.
"I'm gonna need a better description then that. I'm assuming they weren't actually cartoons." the Deputy sighed flipping his pad.
"Excuse me." Maria replied. She pulled out a small brown bottle and brought it up to her nose. She inhaled and Sheriff Valenti walked in, giving her a weird look.
"Cypress Oil, it um, it reduces stress." she laughed nervously. When he turned away she started to sniff even more.
"You okay?" Sheriff Valenti asked me.
"Yea thanks. I-I'm just a little shaken up." I replied. And I wasn't lying there. I had just almost died. Who wouldn't be shaken up? I swear, I saw flashes of my life pass me by.
"Sheriff, the suspects ran out just after the incident occurred. Couple of outsiders. No apparent robbery, no injuries other than the girl that fell. Just seems like an argument that got outta hand." the Deputy stated. The Sheriff looked over at me and then nodded.
"Hey, I told you two to stay outta there!" He yelled to Jennifer and Larry. He rolled his eyes and turned to Valenti. "Couple of tourists in town for the crash."
"Uh, Sheriff, hi, um, um, I'm sorry, I really need to talk to you. I think something happened here." Larry said. He looked at Jennifer and she nodded at him.
"What do you think happened?" Sheriff Valenti asked sarcastically. I prayed that those two would shut the hell up.
"The gunman was, was, was standing right over there, right? And the shot was fired into this direction. Now, Jen and I, we searched this entire place up and down and...I mean there's, where's the bullet?" Larry laughed. He then coughed when no one joined him. Sheriff Valenti turned to the Deputy for an explanation. Please, please let him believe ME! I yelled in my head.
"We haven't found a bullet hole yet sheriff." he sighed.
"Yea, and uh, sheriff. Before it happened, the girl gave me this." Larry mumbled, handing Valenti the fake alien photo. Valenti looked at it and gave it to my dad. "Jeff," he said. My dad looked at it and gave me a frown.
"Lizzie!" he warned.
"Yea?" I asked.
"I told you, about showing the alien photos to the tourists." I gulped and nodded my head.
Sheriff Valenti walked over to where Max was sitting and he looked at the two empty tobasco bottles.
"There were two kids sitting over here when it happened, two boys about her age. And then one of them went--" Jennifer said. I was getting really nervous and she was about to spill what Max did, so I interrupted her.
"Uh yea, that's right there were. You know that I didn't recognize them, so they must have just been tourists." I said shaking it off. I looked into the Sheriff's eyes and practically pleaded with him.
"No, no it sure looked like that she knew them to me." Larry said looking between me and the Sheriff.
That night I went up to my room. I started undress for my shower, so I could relax. My uniform was drenched in my blood and ketchup. No one could find it! I stuffed it in my book bag and went over to my mirror. That's when I saw it. There in the middle of my stomach, around my belly button, I saw a funny silver handprint, where Max healed me. I touched it and placed my hand over it.
"Holy shit." *

hehe what'd ya think? I told ya I would post soon! Now...Feedback!

Max laughed. "Her reaction was holy shit?" he asked. Kayarra walked in smiling.
"Glad you're in a better mood." she said. She held a tray in her hands. The tray had needles on top of it. Max looked at them curiously as Kayarra set them down. He reached out to grab one and look at it when Kayarra slapped his hand away.
"I have to put these in Ms. Harding." she said, looking him straight in the eyes. After that close encounter with Tess moving Kayarra had to keep her asleep some more. She smiled at Max and walked towards Tess, walking on her air tube on the way. She smirked and looked over at Max.
"Um, Mr. Evans I hate to ask you this but I get really nervous when people watch me do this." Kayarra explained. Max nodded and stepped into the hallway. Kayarra made sure the door was locked and she went back to Tess. She grabbed the needle and carelessly pushed it into her arm. When she was done she unlocked the door. "Thank you, Mr. Evans." she said. Before she could leave Max gently grabbed her arm.
"Do you think she'll move anymore?" he asked. Kayarra looked towards Tess. "I really doubt it Mr. Evans. Most people in comas don't wake up. I'm so sorry." she seemed to sob. Max nodded and closed the door after her. Luckily he did or else he would have heard Kayarra laughing down the hallway.
--------------
"Today, we are making an extremely delight chocolate cake good for any occasion-" Bye bye Martha Stewart. "You can tell the Rock that I will crush him into little pepples and eat him for lunch, in fact-" You do that buddy. Remember to floss after eating. "This diamond is extremely rare. It's found in Paris, in a little store-" Great. That'd be a great engagement ring from the boyfriend I don't have! "A fragrance this beautiful will get the attention of anyone in the room, and it may even get you a promotion at work-" Why use perfume when you have boobs? "Brady, I like you. You understand me so well, but I can't just forget about Phillip." "And I can understand that Chloe. We were first friends and we always will be-" Sure, tell her that after you find her with Phillip! Liar! "The 1947 crash was an exquisite crash-" It was the only crash. Great. Nothing's on TV.
"Nothing comes out of the Ketchup Bottle, so I shake it and out comes a little, then a lotta!" I sang. My voice was scratchy and I sucked. Oh well, bite me! I saw my apartment wall banging and I could hear screams next door.
"Having fun Mr. Reynolds? Is it the sexretary or your wife?" I yelled out. I heard a simple reply. "Secretary!" he yelled back. "Sexretary..." I mumbled. I shook my head and got a beer.
"Now this is Heaven." I mumbled taking a sip. "or hell...whichever as long as it's got beer and Jack Daniels..." I looked at my laptop and I considered going over there. And doing what? Writing a sequel? I don't even know what happens! I groaned and was about to take another sip of my beer when it was snatched out of my hand. I looked up and there was a young girl, perhaps my age, perhaps younger staring at me.
"Drinking?" she snapped.
"Duh!" I replied.
"Well that ends today." she said, smiling and throwing the bottle against the wall. I heard Mr. Reynolds yell something profound.
"Who the hell are you?" I asked.
"I'm your guardian angel!" she replied sarcastically. When I just stared at her, she sat down across from me.
"No, actually I'm Kayarra."
"Great, Kayarra, can I ask what the hell you're doing in my apartment." I snapped.
"Go ahead and ask." she said sweetly.
"What the hell are you doing in my apartment?" I yelled.
"Hmm...I could answer that or I could get you cleaned up." She said looking me up and down.
"Excuse me?" I replied. She grabbed my arm and pulled me up. I yanked my arm away and she held her two hands up. "Whoa! Relax."
"What do you mean cleaned up?" I said tartly.
"I mean make you look alive. Right now your hairs greasier than a homeless person's, your eyes have bags under them, your teeth are covered with beer stains, your breath smells like the dead, and your clothes...God I can't even begin." Kayarra listed disgusted.
"Who the hell are you to tell me who I am?" I yelled at her. She was insane! And people thought I should've owned a mental institution instead of writing my book. I think Kayarra should belong in the mental institution.
"Do you even know who you are Liz?" She asked. She never gave me a chance to answer. "Look, my name's Kayarra. Doesn't that sound familiar?"
"Nope."
"Veronica."
"Nope."
"Stacie?"
"Not even."
"Hazel? Amber?"
"Nope, and nope."
"Lexie?"
"No. Can you go away now?" I asked, impatient. "I'm not in the mood to play guessing games with you."
"Serena?" she asked, ignoring me. She obviosly saw my face freeze.
"Who the hell are you?" I snapped. She jumped in the air and smiled! "Yes!" she cheered.
"I'm Serena." she said happily.
"Well I'm both." she stated.
"Wait, so like you're schktzofrentic?" I asked. Kayarra rolled her eyes.
"Just think of me as your guardian angel." she replied. She pushed me towards the bathroom. I was about to lock the door when she entered.
"Sorry, just gotta remove these." she said, grabbing my razors. "You can shave later, when I'm sure you won't kill yourself!" and then she was gone. I looked at my small bathroom. Windows...windows.
"Yes!" I whispered. There was a small window in the shower. I looked at it and then me.
"OK, I haven't eaten in a while. I can fit." I reassured myself.
"I don't hear water running!" Kayarra called. I rolled my eyes and put on the sink water.
"I still don't hear water!" she yelled. I made a mad dash for the shower. I hopped in and tried to open the window. It was rusty and I could hear Kayarra approaching the bathroom. I quickly turned the handles. The shower sprung to life and hit me with water.
"Wonderful." I mumbled. I threw some water at the window. I pushed and shoved until finally the rust began to break. I smiled triumphantly and pushed it open. I jumped up and grabbed the top.
"Shit!" I called. I pulled myself up, slipping every now and then. I pushed my legs out first. I was fine until I tried to get my hips through. The banging at the door stopped.
"Maybe she's leaving." I mumbled. I tried to get out, but no results. The shower curtain flew back to reveal a pissed off Kayarra.
"Um...hi?" I said. She frowned and turned to leave.
"Wait! Aren't you going to help me out?" I demanded. She seemed to think about it before shaking her head.
"No, I was thinking of calling Channel 13 and telling them there was an attempted suicide here. Then your ass will be filmed on TV. You'll be the new superstar!" she gushed. I gasped at her and she waved at me before leaving the bathroom. She came back with my black cordless.
"Yes, she's dangling out the window."
"HELP! Please, help me!" I yelled.
"Oh that? That's her! She's a little insane too. She just saw Alice in Wonderland for the first time and well she thought she saw the White Rabbit walk out the shower window. It's so sad." Kayarra sobbed into the phone. I glared at her and she hung up.
"Now, as I see it, you can start listening to me or I can call the rest of the channels."
"Fine!" I groaned. She smiled and grabbed my arms, yanking me forward onto the bathtub floor.
"Ow!" I yelled. She moved to help me up, and I moved quickly back.
"It was an accident!" she insisted. I rolled my eyes and stood up.
"It was!" she called as I stepped out of the tub, slipping on the floor.
"Today is not my day." I mumbled, ready to cry. "You got that right." Kayarra agreed. "Now, let's really get you cleaned up, unless you want to try to shower in the toilet seeing at how the tub didn't work?"
"Shut up!"

Veronica Thanks for the feedback! *big*
roswellluver Actually this part kind of goes into what's going on with Tess. It's weird at first but you'll get the hang of it. And Liz..well she's written a book about every thing that she, Max, and all the other Podsters went through. And basically Max is actually reading it, while Tess is in a coma. *sad* NOT! LoL, so I'm mean.. Anyway, now Serena/Kayarra shows up and WHAM...a whole new mystery.
briggita behr I'm glad you're liking this. Kayarra/Serena was actually inspired to my by Kayarra. We were joking around online one day and I was like..hehe, wanna be Tess's mean nurse. Then I kinda made her a bigger character than that. LOVE YA KAY!

Now enough of my babble..here's part 4!

~*~There's a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind
And the reason it's still standing
It was strong enough to bend

For years, we have stayed together
As lovers and as friends
What we have will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you say something that you can't take back
Big wind blows and you hear a little crack
When you say "Hey well I might be wrong"
You can sway with the wind till the storm is gone

Sway with the wind till the storm is gone
Like a tree out in the backyard
That never has been broken by the wind
Our love will last forever
If we're strong enough to bend

When you start thinkin' that you know it all
Big wind blows and a branch will fall
When you say "Hey this job takes two"
We can sway with the wind till the skies turn blue

"Tess. Come on, I know you want to wake up." Max pleaded. No one knew he was back yet. And maybe that was a good thing. They were probably living happy lives right about now, he didn't want to be the one to disturb it. Liz and Kyle probably had a billion rugrats running around by now. Max sighed in disgust of the thought and tried to wipe it away. Tess was lying dormant on the bed. Well obviously since she was in a coma. But it wasn't right. She was supposed to be ok.

*flashback*
"Oh god. Max are you ok?" Tess asked, pleading with him.
"I'm fine. Come on, we gotta get out of here."
"But Rath and Lonnie...we have to get them." Tess said, looking down the corridor of the sewer towards Rath and Lonnie's lair. "If we don' kill them now they will come after us again."
"I know Tess but I'm not in the mood to become a murderer." Max snapped.
"Look, neither am I ok? But are you in the mood to become the murdered?" Tess searched his eyes, seeing as how they were windows to his soul. " I didn't think so, come on." Tess started to run down the sewer's, with Max on her tail. They saw Lonnie and Rath leaning against each other in pain.
"They're defenseless." Max said to Tess. "Exactly. We strike while they're down. It'll be easier."
"That's not right Tess."
"It's what Nasedo always taught me." she replied. "Don't you get it Max? These are our enemies! They would do the same thing to us in an instant."
"Fine, but we gotta do it quick. I don't like the fact that they look like Michael and Isabel."
"I don't like killing my sibling look alike either Max. But we'll do it on the count of three, ok? One...Two...Three." Tess shouted and Rath and Lonnie tried to put a shield up to protect themselves. Soon the light burst through and gathered them in it, killing them, unmercifully. Their screams echoed and Max could feel their pain in their screams.
"Let's get out of here." He mumbled to Tess. She nodded and the two left, for good.
- - - -
"Antar? Are you kidding me Tess?" Max asked, in disbelief.
"No joke Max. We're going. Tomorrow!" Tess smiled. "Home, can you believe it?"
"I don't remember that home Tess. Earth is my home. My home is with-"
"Oh I know Max. You're home is with Liz. I got it, I got it. But I have a home with Kyle and the Sheriff too. I mean I felt like they were my family."
"Ya, good feeling huh?"
"Best of. But Max, we're going towards our REAL parents. I mean this is what you've wanted right? To save our race?"
"Well yes, but doing it without Michael and Isabel feels wrong." Max said. Tess looked away for a second before sitting on the broken down bed with Max. "Somethings we'll have to do on our own. You told me that before you left, Michael and Isabel just didn't understand you..."
"I know, but there's times I don't understand them too. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be. A great mystery between us all."
"No. It's not supposed to be a mystery or a puzzle, Max. We're supposed to understand each other." Tess argued, trying to fight back the urge to cry. "When I first came to Roswell, none of you understood me at all. And I didn't get that...but, you and I understand each other." She leaned forward to kiss him and Max turned away. "No Tess."
"All right Max. I guess you don't understand me after all."

Chapter 3 No System For Love
Being the scientific person I was, I told myself their had to be a logical explanation for all of this. Max was in my biology class and I was sure we could talk then. Little did I know that talking was the last thing we would do though...
"Okay, we've spent the last week talking about Geneis and phylum, and now we're going to get a little more specific and talk about the difference between species. For today's experiment you'll be working in teams of two." Mrs. Hardy, the biology teacher announced. Max Evans chose that moment to walk in late. He slid in, beside me and stuck a pencil in his mouth. He avoided my gaze and started to flip through his books.
"Mr. Evans, so nice of you to join us. Okay, everyone on the right prepare a slide with the vegetable sampling, everyone on the left, take a toothpick and get a sample from your cheek." Mrs. Hardy smiled sarcastically at Max as the class did what she asked.
Max looked down and gazed at me from beneath his eyelashes, obviously uncomfortable. He dropped his pencil and raised his hand.
"Mr. Evans?"
"Could I get a bathroom pass?"
"High maintenance today aren't we?" Mrs. Hardy asked, but she obliged his plea. She handed me a toothpick and I swiped the inside of her cheek.
"It's very easy to look on the outside and say what differentiates humans from other species. But what about what's on the inside, everyone, look at the human cells and describe everything you see on your lab sheet." Mrs. Hardy moved towards Pam Troy, complaining about spit, and saliva. I sighed and looked at my cheek cells. I couldn't help but glance at Max's pencil. I slid it over and made a cheek cell slide from samples off his pencil. The strangest thing happened and I could have sworn that I was going crazy. If the mental institution had come by right then and there I would have jumped up and let them take me. Max Evan's cells looked nothing like mine.

"Are you going to tell me anytime soon where we are going?" I asked Kayarra impatiently. "Patience is a virtue." Kayarra sang back. I glared at her head and rolled my eyes under my sunglasses.
"Ya well I have no virtures."
"And you have a bad attitude..." Kayarra reminded me. "Gee thanks."
"You're welcome! It's so good to see someone of your age with manners."
"Speaking of ages...how old are you?" I asked. Kayarra rolled her eyes. "Forget the manners thing I just said."
"Forgotten. So how old again?"
"Can you keep a secret?" Kayarra asked me. She pulled into a parking lot of some beauty salon and turned to look at me.
"Yes."
"Good, me too. Now get out of the car." She opened the door and waited for me to open mine. I did, a little slowly, and stepped out. My faded baggy jeans, fell to the ground over my boots and even through my big gray sweatshirt, I shivered violently. "It's cold."
"We'll buy you a new coat."
"With what?"
"Your best selling book money of course!" Kayarra smiled over at me. I rolled my eyes and followed her into the salon. It was small, well extremely small and extremely empty. One lady at a desk smiled at the both of us.
"Hello. How's business today Joan?" Kayarra asked. The lady stood up and was actually quite tall. She walked over to us and looked me up and down. "Pretty busy right now, with you two. You both need your hair done?" she asked. Kayarra shook her head. "Nope, just Liz, here needs quite the fixing up."
"Hey!" I hissed at her.
"Well I'll say..." Joan led me over to a chair and plopped me down in it. She gently pulled my head back into a sink and preceeded to wash my long hair. It went down the my hips now, I think. I haven't really noticed or cared.
"Dear, don't you ever wash your hair?" Joan asked me, continuing to apply shampoo.
"I just haven't really cared is all..." I replied, with a shrug.
"Start caring!" she snapped. I had to laugh at her. She just seemed to take me in right away as her own. Kayarra sat in one of the chairs next to me, reading a magazine. "What should I do to her hair?" Joan asked her later when I moved from the sink, a towel over my head.
"It's pretty long but I was looking through this magazine and what about this?" Kayarra pointed to a picture and I tried to get a look at it.
"Black?" Joan asked. She looked at me, than at the picture and shrugged. "That'll look good." She handed the magazine back to Kayarra. "Should we do the eyebrows too?"
"Ya, they look like big bush's." she replied.
"Hey!"
"The truth hurts Liz." Kayarra replied. I rolled my eyes and urged to jump from the seat. Joan approached me with a bowl of wax. I shook my head and closed my eyes, flinching.
* * *

"Kayarra, I'm going to kill you." I hissed as we left the tiny salon. She waved to Joan and followed me to the car. "Why? You look gorgeous." she replied, getting in the car and fixing her lipstick.
"My face is numb."
"She used wax Liz. It's bound to hurt and you look as beautiful as Catherine Zeta Jones."
"Is that the picture you showed her?" I demanded to know. My hair certainly looked it, in black waves, halfway to the middle of my arm.
"Well yes, but she's absolutely gorgeous. Did you see her in Zorro?"
"Um no."
"You have to see the movie. Truly great love story plus a little action." Kayarra honked her horn repeatedly at a car that had sped through a red light. "Speed kills!" she yelled out the window. I slipped a little in my seat and put a hand over my face.
"The last thing I need is a love story."
"Oh I know. I read your book." Kayarra whistled and I looked at her in shock. "My book? You read it?"
"That's what happens to books Liz. They. Are. Read." she laughed.
"Is that how you found me?"
"In New York? No! I had to look in the phone book for that." We stopped at another red light on Broadway.
"Now where are we going?"
"To get you new clothes." she answered as if it was obvious. "Why?" I whined.
"You want Max to see you in those things?"
I looked at her shocked. "Max?!?! Max Evans?" I cried.
"Duh. What other Max would I mean?"
"You mean to tell me that you've known where Max was this whole time I was with you and you never told me?" I lunged at her throat before she could even answer.
* * *

"Should I call her?" Maria asked Isabel, Alex, and Michael. They each looked at her as if she were insane.
"Call who?" Alex asked.
"Liz. She'll want to know." Maria answered.
"No. I don't want her to know. She has no right." Isabel snapped.
"She's been a really good friend to you Isabel." Alex said, rubbing her hand.
"She drove my brother away to New York."
"No, that was you." Maria snapped. "I know you both got in a fight that day."
"But he left from her house. Not mine!" Isabel hissed at Maria. "Besides, it's my baby. She shouldn't be able to know anything about this."
"Fine, Fine. But I still think we should call her."
"She printed a book, telling our lives to the entire world!" Michael protested.
"Yes, but now that everyone knows...the FBI hasn't even touched you. We have great bodyguards...maybe she did you all a favor. Half the world doesn't believe her."
"Still...she promised that she wouldn't say anything." Isabel sighed. Alex looked at Maria and crossed his neck, signaling her to stop.
"Fine, I'm calling her myself." Maria picked up the phone and started to dial the number that she tried to memorize.
'Hey you've reached Liz. I'm not in. Leave a message at the beep.'
"Liz, it's Maria. Long time, no talk. Just calling to check in or something. Call me back. You should know the number. Bye." she hung up the phone and glared at her husband and sister in law. "She's not there. Happy?"
"Let's just get back to celebrating our little gift ok?" Alex begged the two.
"Fine. But I'm not a happy person right now." Maria said, looking helplessly at the phone.

Chapter 4 I Saw a Sign
I had 2 options going through my mind. Run through the halls desperately looking for Maria and Alex to let them know what was going on OR, I could find Max and sort it out with him. Obviously talking to Maria and Alex would get me know where than where I was at that moment. So I did what I the scientist inside of me would have. I ran to find Max Evans.
"Max! Max!! Excuse me, excuse me. Max, I have to talk to you." I said, pushing my way through a hallway of crowded people, finally reaching Max. I grabbed his arm and pulled him into the band room. I was hoping we would be alone but there was my boyfriend, Kyle Valenti, beating on drums.
"Kyle!"
"Hey!" Kyle replied, smiling at me. He looked over at Max. "Hey Max."
"Hey." Max replied casually.
"So'd you get my message?" Kyle asked, turning his attention over to me again. I started to twirl the ring on my thumb, nervously.
"Oh yea, I did. I was uh, just a little...." I mumbled. He's definitely gonna see through this act.
"Shaken up." Kyle finished for me.
"That's what it was."
"I know, my dad told me about the gun goin' off. You okay?" Kyle asked me looking me up and down as if expecting blood to be all over me.
"Oh, yea I am, it was just load and then it was over." I explained.
"So you guys are...??" Kyle asked, gesturing towards me and Max.
"Um, we're looking for a place...to study, for our Bio midterm." I said quickly with a small smile.
"Oh right. Right okay, Biology. All right, I was leavin' anyway." Kyle replied, still looking between the two of us.
"Great, um, that's good." I said in relief.
"Oh, I got my costume for the crash this Friday it's great--" Kyle said, on his way out the door.
"Kyle. We've gotta study. Sorry." I pushed, getting slightly annoyed.
"Right. See ya Max." Kyle replied, rolling his eyes.
"So...you're going out with the Sheriff's son?" Max asked me, eyebrows raised. "Um, yea. Well,it's kind of like this, this casual...okay, Max. Can we just focus here for one minute please?" I lifted up my shirt to show him the handprint on my stomach. Max's grew bigger and he stepped closer to me. "Wow."
"Um, I-I scraped some cells from your pencil. This is really hard to say, I'm trying to keep from blacking out here. Um, the cells weren't normal. So, Max, what I'm going to suggest to you is that we just go back to the bio lab now, so that I can take a sample so that I can see what I'm thinking is wrong, you know? That I got the wrong cells..." I mumbled helplessly. But there I was trying to not let Max think I was some lunatic and he ended that with two simple words.
"You didn't."
"Okay, um. So help me out here Max. I mean, what are you?"
"Well I'm not from around here."
"Where are you from?" I asked, hoping he'd say Seattle, or even Canada! All he did was point upward with his index finger.
"Up north?" I guess. He pointed higher. "You're not an, an alien, I mean. Are you?"
"Well I prefer the term not of this earth. Sorry, it's not a good time to joke." Max replied, erasing the small smile from his face. "Yea, I am. Wow, it's weird to actually say it."
This was my exit cue. I started to head for the exit. "Liz..." Max called. "Um, Max, you know, I have, I'm gonna be late for my US Government class, so I'm just gonna--" Max stopped me at the door. "Liz, listen to me. You can't talk to anyone about this. Not your parents, not Maria. No one. You don't understand what'll happen if you do. Liz please? Now my life is in your hands."
Definitely my cue.
