Summary: Starts at the very end of Departure.
The whole gang is/will be involved.
Max awakes to find that it’s all been a bad dream....

“MAX!” Isabel shouts as Max is exiting the granolith chamber.

“Quick, go. Let's go!” Max shouts at everyone.

Max, Liz, Michael, Maria, Isabel and Kyle run away from the chamber, and stand to watch as the chamber disintegrates and a ship shoots out into the sky.

Max turns to Liz and places his hands on either side of her face and says, “I've been really wrong about a lot. But I was right about one thing: To get you into my life, to be around you, to love you.” Then Max enfolds her in his arms and holds her tightly close to him.

Maria takes a step back and looks up at Michael, “You opened the door and you came out -- why?”
As the answer dawns on her her eyes open wide, “You stayed for me.” It was a statement more than a question. One that Michael answered with his eyes before Maria held on to him again.

“What happens now, Max?” Isabel asks her brother.

“I have to save my son,” he answers.

As they all look towards the sky where Tess has shot off into the unknown – where the other aliens had nearly gone – Liz continues to turn everything over in her head, especially the last statement Max just made. If anyone had been watching her face they would have seen the turmoil of emotions playing there - the love she still felt for Max, the hurt and anger at Tess for killing one of her best friends in the whole world, the fact that Micheal came out of the chamber for Maria but Max didn’t come out for her, the bitterness over Max having slept with Tess and gotten her pregnant and now knowing that she still lives carrying their son and that Max wants to save him. A part of her is thankful that he is such an honorable man but another part of her wants to be able to put the whole Tess thing behind them, but that will never happen if Max is looking for his son.

By the time the group started moving towards the car, Liz had decided what she was going to do.

“Liz, is everything okay?” Max asked with concern.

Isabel and Kyle were ahead of them and Michael and Maria were lagging far behind holding onto each other for dear life. Liz stopped right there and turned towards Max, “No, Max, everything is not okay. I-I’m not sure that I can handle the fact that you have a son - out there - with someone else. It’s all wrong. I was suppose to be the one that carried your firstborn, Max. I was suppose to be your first and only everything but, but now… Well, I’m not.” Tears began to form in the depths of her eyes and the pools threatened to spill over any second. She bit her lip in an effort to hold the tears back until she was no longer facing Max. “M-Max, I-I can’t be with you. Not now, not ever. It just hurts too much and I’m not sure that I will ever get over it. Not-not with her out there somewhere having your son after she killed Alex and- and- and – YOU – here trying to find a way to save him. It will just be a constant reminder of everything we will never have.”

At that Liz turned and ran away from him, letting the tears spill over. Max started to go after her but instead Michael grabbed his shoulder and told him to let Maria go after her instead as Maria squeezed his arm before she ran after Liz. They had stayed back enough to not be obtrusive but close enough to hear some of what Liz said when she raised her voice.

“But I have to go after her and let her know how much I love her!” Max cried.

“No, let’s go, Maxwell,” Michael entreatied.

“No, Michael….”

“Maxwell, Maxwell, come on. We gotta go,” Michael insisted. “You’ve been asleep this whole trip and now there’s only a couple of people left on board. So let’s go!”

Max finally came all the way to and realized he was on an airplane and not at the pod chamber. It took a minute to remember that he and Michael were just returning from Las Vegas instead of all this stuff he had just dreamed. He was still thinking heavily on it as they stepped into the concourse when Alex came out of from around the corner smiling brightly.

“Good afternoon, gentlemen. I will be your ride this lovely afternoon. Isabel had a meeting with the children’s charity fundraiser she is involved with, Maria and Liz are working, Kyle and Tess are pretty much not available since the Sheriff knows about our little get away. So that leaves me. Hope you don’t mind.”

Max still recovering from the intense dream he had was just happy to see Alex alive and well. He didn’t realize he was staring until Michael elbowed him.

“Maximillian, you act like Alex is a foreign sight to you. Let’s go, you’re creeping me out.”

“Oh, sorry, I’m still – uh – just waking up,” he said shaking his head trying to clear it.

It was a pretty quiet ride home. Alex tried to get a conversation going a couple of times but realized that Michael simply didn’t want to talk and Max was mulling over something like he was confused so Alex just let them be. Alex dropped Michael off at the Crash Down since his shift was due to start in the next thirty minutes and his bike was parked out back. That left Max and Alex alone for the ride out to the Evans’.

“Alex – um – uh – nevermind,” Max started.

Alex just glanced sideways at Max and laughed a little. “Are you alright, man?”

“Yeah, it’s just – it’s just that I had this really intense dream on the plane and I’m still trying to figure out what is real and what was dream.”

“Ah, I see. Well, do you want Dr. Alex to analyze your dream or do you want Whitman just to tell you what is real?”

Max grinned and shook his head. Good ole Alex. Life would be dull without him around. “I’m not sure. It was awful, Alex. I was awful. The way I treated everyone and-and…”

“And, what?”

“Oh, nothing, it’s not important – the dream that is. Except to let me know what I don’t want to happen and what I don’t want to be like. So what really did happen?”

“Well, yesterday we all skipped out of school and headed to Vegas. We all split up at first and did our own little things. You and Michael got thrown in jail. Maria auditioned to be a stripper. Everything seemed to be working out then we all met for dinner – where you surprised us cause we all thought you were leaving for some reason. Michael got some guy to let Maria sing on stage while we all danced together. Oh yeah, you and Liz stayed out on the floor a few moments longer than everyone else and for once Tess didn’t notice cause she was too wrapped up in Kyle to even pay attention….” That caught Max’s attention real fast. Suddenly a ton of possibilities started rolling around, but Alex was still talking “…me and Isabel. Then when we went back to the room we were surprised to find good ole Sheriff Valenti there. In short order we were all headed back home with only Kyle and Tess in trouble since none of our parents were told anything. Lucky us.”

“Yeah, lucky us,” Max said absentmindedly.

He was still pondering the Tess possibility when suddenly the memory of Liz and him jumping out of a cab like they had just gotten married in Vegas hit him full force. Then he remembered when he told Liz about the vision he had that she was starting to tell him something when Maria finished singing.

“Alex, turn around! Take me back to the Crash Down, I gotta see Liz,” Max cried like a madman. Then he realized he was acting like a madman with Alex looking at him like he lost his mind. “Um, sorry, I-I-I just remembered - I gotta ask her something. Sorry.”

“It’s okay, man,” Alex smirked. “Did you finally realize that you love her for good?”

“Huh? I, well, I’ve always, no, I just – I just need to ask her something and it has to be in person. That’s all,” Max stammered.

Alex nearly burst out laughing at Max stumbling all over himself trying to ask the rhetorical question. He just shook his head and turned the car around. “Max, it was rhetorical, we all know you love her. You wear your heart on your sleeve when it comes to our little Liz Parker. I was just teasing you. No need to get defensive with me.”

“But, I don’t, well we can’t, you see, this thing with Kyle sort of…”

“… makes it difficult, especially when Liz continuously pushes you away and tells you that you can’t be together. Well, I tell you now that I think something is up with that whole situation and that something else is going on. I mean, Liz looks at you with such sadness and longing and that whole soul mate looking thing you two have going on when you aren’t looking. She loves you, too, you know.”

Max just stared at Alex in disbelief. He had never let on any of this at all. Alex just allowed things to happen as they happened and observed everything. Rarely did he ever interfere or interject his own observations. So to hear it directly from him was kind of like an honored privilege.

Max climbed the ladder to Liz’s balcony to wait for her to finish her shift and come upstairs. He hoped he didn’t scare her. He had just settled into the lounge chair when he heard Liz.

“Okay, Dad. I’m just going to take a shower, change and do some homework.”

Max decided he had better make his presence known before she started undressing for her shower. That could make for an awkward situation. She might think he was being a peeping tom. So he cleared his throat as he peeked in the window.

“What? Who’s th--- Max! What are you doing here?” she was asking as she started climbing through the window to the balcony.

“Well, see, it’s kind of hard to explain. See I fell asleep on the way home and had a really intense dream and it took awhile before I could distinguish what was real and what was dream. Of course I had a little help from Alex. But then I remembered the vision I had of – of us – having gotten married.”

Liz started biting her lip, tucking her hair behind her ear and looking around for a place of escape at the mention of that. Max had an idea but was really unsure if he should do it or not. Alex unwittingly gave it to him – not directly though. So he moved a little closer so that he could tip her chin up to look in her eyes.

“Yeah, well, Max, that was just a….” Liz started.

“… just a vision, I know. But it seemed so real. Like it really happened or was really going to happen. Then you started to tell me something on the dance floor. Will you tell me what it was you were going to tell me?” Liz tried to look down again but Max’s finger kept her from doing so. So instead she just closed her eyes. That was the opportunity Max had been looking for. He quickly leaned down and kissed her with so much passion that it was impossible for her not to feel it. The plan was to get her to thinking about what she was going to tell him and then try to get a flash or two of what was going on. It was so underhanded but he was desperate.

At first he thought she was going to stop him before he got anything but then he felt her give in. She started kissing him back and he was assaulted with a vision of someone that looked like him and then her and Kyle in bed but not doing anything except talking. Max stopped short and looked at her funny.

“Who was that? What happened, Liz?”

Realization hit her - she'd let her guard down and he saw flashes - but what she didn't know.

“I-I thougtht you weren’t going to bring that up anymore,” she said as she moved around him to look out over the edge of the balcony.

“That was before I saw someone who looked like me and you NOT sleeping with Kyle,” Max said firmly, staring directly at her.

Liz glanced up at him quickly with a slight fright in her eyes before she quickly looked back down. Then Liz looked up at Max and looked him straight in the eye and said without wavering, “You have to leave Max and forget what you think you saw. That was just your imagination.”

Max took a step toward her to put his hand on her arm but she jerked backwards causing her to stumble over a flower pot that was directly behind her foot. In turn she sat down hard on the edge of the balcony causing to lose her balance and start to fall backwards over the edge. Max quickly caught her arms and pulled her up and close to him. When he grabbed her arms he saw two flashes – one of the person that looked like him saying, “…to get me to fall out of love with you…” and another of this same person saying they got married in Vegas.

“Are you okay Liz? I’m so sorry I didn’t mean….” Max started.

“It’s okay, I-I know you didn’t mean for that to happen or anything remotely similar. It was me.” Liz paused before looking up at him again. “Thank you again, Max, for saving my life.”

Max just looked at her. She looked like she would burst out crying at any moment if he just told her to go ahead. He pulled her close again and stroked her hair while resting his chin on her head and holding her firmly with his other arm. How he missed this! Why wouldn’t she just talk to him? Surely it is something they could work out together. How could she not know this? Why would she pretend to sleep with Kyle and who was this other person he kept seeing? And what about the connection to Vegas? He wanted to ask her with such an intensity but he was afraid to. He was afraid she would ask him to leave again.

“Ummm, Max?” Liz asked.

“Yes, Liz?” Was this finally it? Was she finally going to tell him what he longed to know?

“Max…” This was deja vu of their dance in Vegas – please nothing interrupt her – Max pleaded within himself.

Then there a knock at the door. “Lizzie? Can I come in?”

It was her mom! “Quick, hide over there – don’t make a noise!” Liz whispered as she shoved Max into the corner of the balcony.

“Sure, mom, I’m just sitting out on the balcony!”

Her mom walked in as Liz came to the window and started to climb in.

“Whatcha need, Mom?”

“I just need a little help with this new inventory that came in a little while ago. Are you very busy with homework or do you think you could help me for just a bit?”

“Oh that’s fine, Mom. I don’t have much homework at all, I’ll be right down.”

Max groaned inwardly. Why? Why? Why? They were so close. Why did this always seem to happen to them?

“Thanks honey,” her mom said as she shut the door behind her.

Liz waited to hear her footsteps going down the stairs before she turned to Max.

“Max, um, you heard her, I need to get down there and help out, so….” Liz stopped and tucked her hair behind her ear in her usual nervous gesture.

“Can’t you tell me what you started to say or I could wait here until your finished and then we can finish talking?” Max held his breath, hoping beyond hope that she would say yes.

“No, Max. There’s not really anything to tell. I was- was just going t-to say that you needed to go anyway. N-Nothing else. So I’ll see ya tomorrow at school.”

With that she turned and practically fled out the door. Max’s heart sank and so did the rest of his body – right into the lounge chair where he started out. At least he had a few clues as to what happened but they only posed more questions than answers. Except one – she didn’t sleep with Kyle! That one was clear. He about wanted to jump for joy just knowing that one pertinent fact. Now to figure out the rest.

Thank you so much for the wonderfully positive feedback! It means so much to me. This is the first fic I have "published" for the public to read so I was really nervous. I hope you like where I'm going with this. I'm going to try to get a new part up each day or two. I would love to do more but I have four children to care for all day! *happy* Here's the next chapter... I hope you enjoy it... let me know...

Michael was walking out the back door to throw out some trash when Max saw him.

“Hey Michael, got a minute?” he inquired.

“Not really, what do you need, Maxwell?”

“I was wondering if I could borrow your bike to pay Kyle a visit.”

“What! Are you like crazy or something?” Michael then realized from where Max had just come from. “Did you and Liz fight again and now you want to bash in Kyle’s nose or something? Well, I’m here to tell you not to do it, Maxwell. First, it won’t get Liz back and second, I don’t think you’re number one on Valenti’s visitor list right now,” he said with a slight shrug.

“It’s not like that Michael, I just need to ask him a question. I got a flash from Liz and she won’t explain it.”

Michael contemplated for a moment and then dug into his pocket for the keys. “Don’t let anything happen to her man. I will seriously blast you a good one if there is one scratch anywhere. And you better be back by the time my shift ends. Understand?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah and thank you!”

Max snatched the keys from the air as Michael threw them in his direction. He practically flew onto the bike and took off before Michael could get in another word. Michael shook his head and went back inside.

At the Valenti house, Kyle and Tess were plugging away in the garage with strict orders not to use any hocus pocus alien powers to do the cleaning. This was supposed to be hard manual labor to pay for their little stunt.

“Oh come on Tess. He’s not even here to see if you use your little hand waving or nose twitching so why don’t you just use it for some of the hard things?” Kyle was groaning as he worked at a large piece of old furniture into the corner.

“No, I want to do this the right way. I’ve always bent the rules here and there cause human rules didn’t apply to me, but I’m just not so sure anymore. Last night I was saying how I was glad I was an orphan when your dad called me like I was a daughter or something. Anyway, for the first time I suddenly felt like I belonged somewhere. Besides your sexy when you work hard like that.”

Kyle just looked at her. He tried not to look like he enjoyed that last comment so he turned around to continue pushing the old armoire into the corner while saying, “Well, if I had some little powers to use I would.”

Tess just glared at him for a minute before moving more boxes of useless junk into the adjacent corner. “Most of this needs to go in the trash. Why don’t you just throw it away instead of just moving it around?”

Kyle rolled his eyes, “Cause these are Dad’s ‘collections’ and I think he just keeps it around so I can move it around from time to time.”

“Want some water? I’m dying for a tall glass,” Kyle asked after a few more minutes.

“Sure why not.”

In the kitchen, Kyle got glasses and started filling them. As he handed Tess a glass, he asked, “Uh, do you need some tabasco with that?”

Tess grinned and shook her head.

“Geez, I could really go for a shower right now,” Kyle said as he leaned back against the counter and rested his head on the over-the-counter cabinets and closed his eyes.

“Your wish is my command, oh great one,” Tess giggled as she sprayed water at him with the sink sprayer.

Kyle jumped, quickly going into action after his initial shock and threw the rest of his glass of water at her.

“Oh, now you’ve done it. You got my hair wet”

Still armed with the sprayer she let it all rip full force for as long as she could before she dropped the sprayer and ran for the living room. She was on her way to the hallway, when Kyle caught her shoulder, twirled her around and proceeded to continue falling right down onto the couch with her. They were laughing so hard that they didn’t hear the motorcycle pull up. Kyle stopped laughing first. He realized how pretty she was when she laughed. How her eyes sparkled and her cheeks flushed. Then he realized that she rarely laughed like this. It was a shame too, her wasting all that time on Evans when he obviously isn’t going to care for her the way she wants him to. But then again she hadn’t mentioned him all day – or even last night for that matter.

“What is it, Kyle?” Tess asked. “You look so serious all of the sudden.”

Instead of answering her, Kyle leaned over and kissed her. He pulled back to look at her to make sure it was okay. Since she didn’t look objectionable he kissed her again. Just as they were starting to really relax there came a knock on the door.

Just as Max knocked on the door, he glanced through the window and saw a sight he never thought he would see. Kyle and Tess were kissing. Wow. Just as Kyle started to look towards the door Max pulled back hoping he wasn’t caught staring at them. A few seconds later Kyle answered the door.

“What do you want Evans? This couldn’t have waited for another time could it? Want me to get Tess?”

“No, I wanted to talk to you. Uh, were you busy? It is somewhat important but if you’re b—“

“Well I was busy but not anymore. What is it?”

“Could I come in?”

“Why not?” Kyle opened the door the rest of the way and motioned for Max to come in.

“Alright I’ll get straight to the point. I know you didn’t sleep with Liz. I went over to talk to her this afternoon and found out.”

“So she finally told you what this whole thing was about?”

“Not exactly. I was hoping you could do that. We were interrupted by her mother.”

“Well, Evans, I’m sorry you wasted your time. She didn’t tell me what it was about either.”

“W-what? Then why---“

“She came over and begged me to help her with something and told me not to ask questions. She seemed like she really needed this to be done. I figured you had really made her mad for the last time. So I went along with it.” Kyle shrugged. “Anyway, now I know there is something more to it than that but she won’t tell.”

Max just stood there. Kyle didn’t know. How could that be? He was going to have to figure something else out.

“Evans. If that is all, then do you mind…” Kyle said as he motioned for the door. “We have a lot of work to do before dad gets back from work.”

Max just looked at him, knowing they weren’t working before but didn’t let on that he had seen them. “Oh, sure, that was it. Umm, sorry for the interruption.”

Max parked the bike in back of the Crash Down and made his way around the front to go inside. He made his way to his favorite booth and Maria made her way over to him with a cherry coke in hand.

“Hiya, girlfriend, why the long face?” Maria greeted Max.

“Oh, nothing really, just thinking a little bit,” Max answered. “Think I could get a piece of Men In Blackberry Pie?”

“Sure thing. Anything else?”

“Um, yeah, when do you get off? I could use a ride home.”

“You’re in luck – I get off in 5 minutes.”

“In that case make that pie to go.”

“You got it,” Maria winked as she turned to get his pie and fill another customer’s cup of coffee.

Five minutes later they were getting in Maria’s Jetta.

“Now you want to tell me what is on your mind or do I have to beat it out of you?”

Max had been thinking of how to ask Maria what she knew without putting her on guard. “There’s a couple of things actually.”

“Hmmm, really. Spill, spill.”

“It’s hard to know which one to tell you first.”

“Well give me a hint and I’ll tell you which one. Come on, the suspense is killing me already,” Maria winked with a sweet smile.

Max smiled. It’s hard not to when you’re around Maria. He didn’t understand how Michael could brood so much with her around. Though he has noticed him loosening up since he started dating her in their on again off again relationship. Perhaps there was hope for him after all. But back to the matter at hand. “Well, it has to with Kyle and Tess and Kyle and Liz. Take your pick.”

Maria looked at him quizzically for a minute. “Weeeeelllll, how about Kyle aaaaaannnd L-, T-, no Li-, no Te-, Liz. NO, Tess! Okay, let’s hear Kyle and Tess, besides I don’t think there is anything new on the Kyle and Liz front that I don’t know already. I hope. Okay go for it, Kyle and Tess.”

Max could only grin for a second before Maria started giving him the eye – letting him know he’d better start talking.

“Okay, I went over to Kyle’s today to talk to him about – um, about the thing with him and Liz and after I knocked, I looked through the window by the door and saw….” Max paused for effect, just to get Maria more into the whole thing.

“What?! What did you see?”

“I saw Kyle and Tess on the couch…. Kissing.”

Maria’s eyes got really wide and her mouth dropped to the floorboard. She stared at him instead of the road and nearly went careening into a light pole if Max hadn’t jerked the wheel when he did, which got her attention back to the road.

“Oh. My. Goodness. Are you serious? They were kissing? That is just so unbelievable. Was it just a little peck peck or was it a really engrossed hands all over body kind of kiss?”

Max sort of frowned and thought for a moment. He didn’t think about having to talk about details like that. Although he should have considering who he was talking to. “Well, they were lying on the couch but there wasn’t much hands on stuff.”

“Ooohhh,” Maria said with eyes wide, looking at the road this time though. “That’s still big news. Wow, who would’ve thought.”

They both sat in their own thoughts for a moment. Max thinking about Tess possibly falling for Kyle and leaving him alone in the romance department for once. Maria thinking about Tess falling for Kyle and staying in Roswell so that her best friend could finally be with the love of her life.

“So what is the thing with Kyle and Liz?” Maria asked after a few minutes.

“Well, they didn’t sleep together,” Max said hoping he stated it so that Maria would start spilling stuff without realizing he didn’t know anything else.

“You mean she finally told you all about everything that happened? Oh thank goodness. Now that whole mess can be over with and we can start thinking of a way for Tess to stay in Roswell, even though I think we don’t have to work too hard at that now that she and Kyle could be hooking up. That would be just great. Then you two could finally get back together and she doesn’t have to pretend that she lost her virginity to Kyle of all people instead of you who she wanted to share that with. Oh, it’s been killing her for so long Max. This is just wonderful news. Now maybe everything can just get back to normal,” Maria went on and on slumping back in her seat with relief and one hand covering heart like it was about to beat right out of her chest. At the end of her little spill she just sighed really big and looked over at Max with the most relieved expression. “This whole secret concerning your future self was eating at me too – but not nearly as much as it was killing Liz - cause I couldn’t share it with Michael, ya know? Cause we were afraid he might accidentally let it slip to you and… well, we don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

Max sat there a moment trying to decipher everything that Maria just said with the flashes he had gotten from Liz. 'It sounded like she said 'my future self' which would explain the person that looked like me but wasn't me but a future self doesn't make sense. I mean future indicates time travel which isn't possible. So what is that about? And what was this stuff with keeping Tess in Roswell? When was she planning on leaving? Did I miss something? And it is confirmed once again that Liz and Kyle never slept together,' Max thought to himself. Maria noticed that Max looked a tad confused and then it started to sink in that maybe she was the one that just told Max about the future stuff. She bit the side of her lip and just silently prayed that he actually knew about it and that maybe she just spoke too fast for him or something.

“Umm, Max, did I-I, ummm, just tell you more than – well, than you knew?” Maria asked. “Please tell me I didn’t.”

“Uh, not really, you just said it in another way than I knew about,” Max rejoined.

“How’s that?” Maria said, not believing him for a minute.

“Well, see I went to Liz to ask her what she was trying to tell me on the dance floor in Vegas while you were singing and I kissed her. I got flashes from her and well, that’s what I saw but I didn’t know what I saw. Does that make sense?” Maria nodded, not believing she didn’t find out this first before opening her big mouth. “Anyway, I understand if you don’t want to elaborate on anything you just said.”

“I want to Max, but I really think that Lizzie should do that. She’s going to kill me if she finds out as it is. You won’t tell will you?”

“Of course not, Maria. It’s not like I was exactly honest with you to begin with. I was – I was sort of hoping you would – you would do what you just did and spill something that you thought I knew already. Forgive me?” Max looked appropriately repentant and Maria of course nodded her assent. She completely understood why he did what he did.

Just then they pulled into the Evans’ driveway. “Thanks Maria, for the ride and for not getting mad at me.”

“Your welcome. See ya tomorrow.”

At school the next day Maria looked all over for Michael and Liz. Michael not being at school was nothing new but it was something for Liz not to be there. In fact the only person she saw from their little group was Isabel.

“Good morning, Isabel. Have you seen Michael or Liz this morning?” Maria asked.

“No I haven’t but you aren’t the only one looking for them. Max asked me several times this morning already,” Isabel rolled her eyes. “Of course he only asked about Michael once. Well, excuse me I need to get to class.”

Maria watched her go and saw Alex meet her in the middle of the hall, offer his arm, Isabel accept it and then the two of them continue on to their first classes which were beside each other. She turned around to see Kyle and Tess walking down the hall together with Tess laughing. Not something she did often. Suddenly Maria was seeing the possibilities of the situation. That’s when she saw Michael. And what she saw didn’t look good. Something was wrong – something big.

“Michael? Michael, what’s wrong?” Maria asked, not sure she really wanted to hear the answer. At that moment Max walked up. Immediately he assessed that something wasn’t right.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” he asked.

Michael looked grimly at them both. His face belying many emotions, his stance one of determined beligerence… like he could just blast the first person that looked at him wrong. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, “It’s Liz….”

“What about Liz?” both Maria and Max asked in unison, Maria grabbing onto Michael's arm for support.

“She and her mom were in a car accident this morning. Mrs. Parker is just shaken and bruised but Liz is – she’s uh, she’s pretty bad off. I think they said she’s in a coma.”

Maria just leaned into Michael and started to cry. Max’s head started spinning. All he could think of at the moment was his precious Liz and the horrid dream he had on the plane ride. It was like it was coming true only now it was Liz instead of Alex. He had to find Tess and find out what she did to his Liz!

“Where is she? Where’s Tess?” Max demanded like some kind of madman.

“Tess, what does Tess have to do with this? Liz is the one that is hurt and you’re worrying about Tess?! What is wrong with you, Max?” Maria sobbed as she hit him in the chest.

“Tess is responsible for this,” and with that Max took off down the hall where he saw Tess with Kyle by the water fountain.

“What did you do to her Tess??!! What did you do to Liz?”

Thank you all for the great feedback! I'm having a bit of a problem getting this next part to flow but oh well, after I get past this dream stuff, it'll get better I promise!! Here's the next chapter - please bear with me...

Tess blanched. She had no idea what Max was talking about. Everyone in the hallway stopped to stare at Max and Tess.

“I-I-I don’t – know, wh-what you’re t-talking about Max,” Tess stammered. “Wh-what happened to Liz?”

“Yeah, Evans, what happened? And what makes you think Tess had anything to do with it?” Kyle demanded on Tess’s behalf.

“Stay out of it Kyle, you don’t have a clue what’s going on here. But Tess here does. What kind of mind-war….” Max stopped right there, though not by choice, but because Michael came up behind him and covered up his mouth real quick before Max could finish. Michael was a little lost too but he could see where this line of questioning was going and he wasn’t sure he liked the implications.

“What Max is trying to tell you, in his own not so subtle way, is that Liz and her mom were in a wreck this morning and Liz is in a coma,” Michael stated.

Everyone around them gasped and started whispering among themselves while most started moving on towards their classes since the bell was about to ring. Kyle and Tess both stood there shocked. Tess spoke first, “And why do you think I had anything to do with this Max?”

“No, this isn’t the place to discuss it. I don’t think Maxwell here can control what he is saying enough to risk talking about it here. Later,” Michael forcibly walked Max down the hall to the front steps. “What was that Maxwell? You nearly said ‘mind-warp’ out there for everyone to hear! Don’t you think that is just a little risky? What the crap do you think Tess had anything to do with it anyway? I saw what happened. I was right behind them when it happened. A truck came swerving across the line and nearly made it off the other side before colliding head on with the car on the passenger side. The driver was drunk off his rear, Max. Now do you want to explain what that blow up was about and how Tess could possibly be connected?”

Max just stood there burning with anger and worry, clenching and unclenching his fists, while working his jaw muscles. If one looked hard enough they would swear they could see steam coming from his ears. Max started pacing and running one of his hands through his hair.

“It’s hard to explain Michael. I just know she had something to do with it. I dreamed this would happen - only it was Alex instead and he died. I can’t let Liz die, Michael….”

Michael interrupted him with a hand on his arm, “Max, stop. Are you talking about that dream you had on the plane? Geez Max it was just a dream. You have never been able to tell the future before so what makes you think that you can now? Get real, Maxwell… the dream was Alex being killed and real life is Liz in the hospital alive. Two different people, two different situations, even though they are under similar circumstances.”

Max just stared at Michael like he was talking in another language. Finally he said, “I have to get to the hospital. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Michael let him go. Maybe right now wasn’t the time to try and talk any sense into him. He would just have to keep an eye on his big mouth before it got them into any trouble though. He had better alert the rest of the group to keep an eye on him too and give the news to Isabel and Alex.

Later at the hospital the whole group was assembled in the waiting room close to Liz. Maria crying into Alex’s chest, while Isabel sat on the other side of her stroking her hair. Michael was keeping between Max and Tess like a wall, with Max pacing and Tess sitting beside Kyle on the other side of the room. Two questions were on everyone’s mind: Was Liz going to be okay? And What was Max talking about?

“I wonder what is wrong with Max?” Isabel whispered over to Alex. “This is not like him to flip out like this.”

“Well the only thing that I can think of is he had this really intense dream on the plane coming from Vegas. He didn’t tell me what it was about but it was so intense that he wasn’t sure what was real and what was the dream. He said it was really awful and that he knows what kind of person he didn’t want to be and what he didn’t want to happen. What ever that meant?” Alex replied.

Isabel just thought to herself. She was going to have to get him to sleep and see if she could see what was on his mind. Surely with it being forefront material he would dream a little bit of it. Before she could get any further in that thought Mr. Parker came through the door.

“Hey, I just thought I would let you know that they’re going to start letting Lizzie have visitors. Two at a time for just a couple of minutes. The nurse will come get you when they’re ready. Mrs. Parker and I are going to go to the cafeteria.” With that he held his hand up in a little wave and walked out of the small room.

Maria sat up quickly and looked at Alex. He nodded with a slight smile and Maria ran over to Max while wiping her eyes and stated, “We’re first.”

Just a few seconds later the nurse walked in and asked for the first two visitors. On the way down the hall the rest of the group could hear her telling them no more than three minutes, no loud talking, etc, etc. They visibly relaxed once Max left the room.

Isabel was the first to say something. “We only have a minute before he returns. What is going on?”

“The best I can tell, is Maxwell had some kind of realistic dream and he thinks it is coming true,” he said with a look of disbelief. “Only in the dream it was Alex in the car wreck and – you died man – sorry.” Alex took it with a grain of salt, it was a dream after all, and shrugged. “Anyway, in this dream Tess had something to do with it. The best I could get out of him on the ride over was Tess used her mindwarp powers to trick Alex into thinking he went to Sweden and then killed him somehow. I don’t know. I’m just not adding the Alex dream and the Liz accident together to equal evil Tess.”

This whole time Tess was sitting soberly. Is that what Max really thought of her? That she was some sort of evil person out to kill the people he cared about? ‘But I’m not evil. I’m on their side. I’ve helped protect them and show them more about themselves than they knew before. Why would he think that? Does everyone?’ she thought to herself.

As if Isabel could read her thoughts, she went over to Tess, took her hand and said, “Tess no one here thinks that of you. It’s just Max having gone off the deep end for a little while. It’ll work out. We’re all going to make sure of that.” Isabel smiled sadly. ‘This has to be rough on her. She’s been through so much. How are we going to get this through to Max?’ she thought.

Max and Maria entered Liz’s room cautiously. Liz had a bandage around the top of her head and a few small scratches on her face. There were several machines hooked up to her and they were all beeping in synch with her body’s responses. Maria just covered her mouth and tears sprang up anew. Max put a hand on her shoulder and squeezed it before moving to one side of the bed.

“Remember you only have three minutes,” the nurse said as she stepped outside.

Maria looked to the nurse and nodded before moving to Liz’s other side. Max had just picked up her hand when Maria stepped up to the bed. Liz’s heart rate started to accelerate ever so slightly and the EEG seemed to spark to life. Maria’s eyes just widened as she took it all in. Another nurse walked in at that moment.

“Is something wrong?” Maria asked.

The nurse smiled, “No it looks as if she may be awake in there after all. It’s good for her to respond to people she knows. Why don’t you two talk to her and let her know that you are here and waiting for her to wake up. She can probably hear you.” After making a notation on her chart the nurse left.

“Maria, watch for more nurses, I want to try and heal her,” Max practically ordered.

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea right this minute, Max. You might be being watched as it is and a big silver hand print mysteriously showing up and her waking up after you visit would seem a little suspicious, don’t you think?” Maria argued quietly.

“I’ll put it in her hair. Now just watch,” Max nearly fumed.

Maria nearly burst fresh tears and turned to watch more carefully as Max placed his hand underneath her head. He was just about to form a connection when Maria turned around and cleared her throat. “Incoming, two seconds.”

So instead of making a connection, he just started talking to her and gently removed his hand before the nurse could see. He was disappointed and a bit angry, too. The nurse came in to mix medications and never left. All too soon it was time for them to go. Maria leaned over and gave Liz a kiss on the cheek and then Max did as he told her he was about to leave. Right before Max let go of her hand, Liz squeezed it.

“She squeezed my hand!” Max exclaimed to the nurse.

The nurse turned around to see Liz squeezing Max’s hand and the fingers on her other hand were starting to move. The nurse picked up her hand and told Liz to squeeze it. Liz didn’t do it. Maria practically shoved the nurse out of the way and told Liz to squeeze her hand that she was still there. Liz did! The nurse ran out and called for the doctor. He came in and observed what was happening.

“This is good news, but you are going to have to leave for a little while. Liz still needs her rest,” then he turned to the nurse. “Page her parents. I’m sure they will want to know this.”

Max and Maria didn’t want to leave but followed doctors orders after promising Liz that they were just outside in the waiting room and wouldn’t leave her and that they would come back later. They finally tore themselves away and headed back to tell the rest of the group the good news.

Over the next several hours, the rest of the group was allowed back to see Liz and continually assured Tess that they didn’t believe Max for a minute. Still Tess stayed in the cafeteria until after Kyle saw Liz and then they went home in order to ease a little tension.

That night Max, Michael, Maria, Alex and Isabel all settled down in the waiting room to sleep. Isabel feigned sleep in order to wait on Max to fall asleep. It took hours and Isabel nearly gave in to the sleep that tried to overtake her but she persevered. Once she heard Max’s steady breathing she laid her hand on his arm and concentrated hard until she felt the familiar pull of her dreamwalk.

Isabel found herself standing at a grave site with Max, Tess, Kyle and Alex all standing around it. Max was accusing Tess of mind warping Alex’s whole trip to Sweden and sending him to Las Cruces to decode the metal book they had, which he was waving around in the air. Then Max turned to Kyle and told him to tell Tess that he remembered Tess mind warping him after killing Alex. After Kyle got through telling her all he remembered about him taking Alex’s body out to the car and thinking it was a gym bag, Alex just started repeating, “Why Tess? Why me? What did I ever do to you? You killed me and all so you could interpret the book. I would have helped you if you just asked. Why Tess? Why me?” Then Max said soemthing that really took Isabel by surprise. “Why did you have to get pregnant Tess?” Isabel’s eyes about popped out of her head. “What good is it to Kivar for you to bring my son back to Antar? I thought the granolith was more than a spaceship. Why did Kivar want it so bad if it is just a spaceship? And now you’ve tried to kill Liz! What’s wrong with you?!” Next everything just started going up in smoke and the faces of everyone they knew started swirling around everywhere. Scenes from the past year flashed here and there. She could feel the pressure Max was feeling to fulfill his ‘destiny’ from everyone yet his love and desire was to be with Liz. Isabel finally jumped out of the dream and awoke with a start.

“We’ve got to have a long talk with Max and get him to see reality.”

Hey guys! I just wanted to let you know that I have been away at my parent's all day doing the new year celebrations and all so the next part will be up tomorrow instead of tonight. I really appreciate your comments and feedback - it's what keep me going with this idea that has rattled around in my head for quite a long time.

Now to let you all in on a little something....
Everything after VLV did NOT happen and therefore a different line of sorts will happen. I don't want to give away too much but y'all are starting to get the picture with Tess. I'll tell you this much - she'll have a big blow up thing with Kyle later on - it's something that should have happened on the show but kept getting shoved into the background. I'm not sure how many chapters this is going to turn into so I don't know how soon it will happen.

Thanks again everyone for all of your comments!!!

Well, I just made it for posting on Jan 2! (Okay by the time I edited out some typos and hit add reply - midnight had come and gone!) I've been sick all day and slept solid until 330 this afternoon. I didn't start writing most of this until a couple of hours ago. So I'm really surprised I made it. I hope you like it. Prom is coming up next....

Max awoke with a start. At first he wasn’t sure where he was at, then it all came tumbling back from the deep recesses of his mind. Or was it a dream? One look around let him know it wasn’t a dream. Liz really was in the hospital.

Michael and Isabel were sitting there talking in whispers. Alex and Maria weren’t there. “Any word on Liz? Where are Alex and Maria?” Max said as he stretched awake.

“No new news on Liz and Alex and Maria went to the cafeteria,” Isabel answered him in a tone that clearly said she had more to say than just answering a couple of questions. “Listen, Max… we need to have a little talk.”

“Yeah, you’re freaking everyone out with your tirade against Tess when there is no evidence for it besides some dream you had,” Michael joined in.

Max didn’t know what to feel. Anger because he was greeted with disbelief first thing in the morning before he’s even gotten to see Liz or to feel hurt because they didn’t believe him. “Look, I don’t need this coming from the two of you. I know what I know and that’s final.”

“No, Max, it’s not. We are going to all sit down and go over this dream of yours. Then I’m going to have a talk with Tess….”

“That’s not going to do any good Isabel. Do you really think you can get any truth from her when she has these mind-warping abilities? Get real. You’ll just have to trust me,” Max interrupted as he raked his hands through his hair.

“Well we need to get everything in the open, Maxwell. We need to understand and then we all need to figure out a way to work this thing out. I’m sure if Liz were awake and knew what was going on she would agree,” Michael stated.

“Fine, I’ll tell you all about it, but after I find out when I can see Liz again,” Max said as he got up.

Isabel and Michael nodded as Alex and Maria walked through the doorway.

Isabel sighed, “Guess I better go call the Sheriff and Kyle.”

“So then I woke up to Michael telling me we needed to get off the plane,” Max concluded.

Everyone sat there for a minute absorbing everything Max had told them. Maria and Isabel were both on either side of Alex holding tightly to his hand. Jim was the first to speak.

“Sooo, you’re saying that, this dream of your’s proves something. Um, proves that Tess is really evil and in cahoots with Kivar. I don’t get it.”

“That doesn’t make sense, Max,” Maria started without. “Liz said that Future Max said that Tess was an integral part of the team and that…. Oops, anyway, that she was integral to the team and that she can’t leave so that makes no sense. Maybe your dream was just a dream.”

She got some questioning looks from that little slip up but no one asked her about it right then. The important thing was helping Max right this second.

Alex was shaking his head, “Yeah, ‘cause I really went to Sweden. You can check everything out if you want to and visit the Olsen’s if you want. You aren’t going to find a big mind warp here, Max. Sorry man.”

Max just sat there dumbfounded that no one believed him. Just then Mr. Parker walked through the door all smiles.

“Liz woke up about 5 minutes ago and she’s asking for you, Max.”

Max’s whole demeanor changed as he instantly jumped up to go see Liz without a backward glance to anyone in the room. The rest of the group was a picture of relief. After Max left with Mr. Parker, everyone came back to the matter at hand.

“I don’t know what we’re going to have to do but we have to do something. Tess is not evil and I don’t care what Evans says,” Kyle stated as he stood up. Everyong nodded in agreement.

Max walked in slowly, smiling at Liz’s open eyes. Liz smiled weakly at him.

“Hey. How ya feel?”

“I’ve been better.”

Max reached for her hand and held it one while he stroked her hair with the other.

“Listen, Max,“ Liz started in a small voice. “There’s something I really need to tell you and…”

“Shhhh, you can tell me later. Right now you need to rest up and get better.”

“No, Max, you don’t understand. This is the third time I almost died and…”

Max looked perplexed.

“Well, sort of. There’s the shooting, there’s last night when I nearly fell off the balcony and then there’s this – I really haven’t counted the times I’ve been shot at or disappeared into another dimension or anything.”

“Okay, but what does that have to do with anything, Liz?”

Liz took a breath. “It has to do with those flashes you had yesterday. I realized that I don’t want to die and not have you ever know from my own mouth what happened. Sure there’s my journal but who knows when or if you would ever get to read that.” Liz paused for a minute.

“Liz, we can wait until you’re out of here and all better….”

“No, right now. And no interruptions," she looked at him pointedly. "See a future version of you came to visit me," she ignored his doubtful look. "He was from 14 years down the road and he needed me to help you fall out of love with me - " he remembered the flash from the day before " - cause I was the only one he trusted. See the night of Gomez, in the other time line, you would have come to my window like you did when you saw me and Kyle,” Liz paused and looked down with pain on her face. “Well, he said we ‘cemented’ our relationship, as in, we – uh, made love." Max's eyebrows shot up especially when he remembered his last minute decision to put a condom in his pocket just in case it came down to that. "I told him that I wasn’t ready for that at all and that there is no way that that had happened but he convinced me that it was true. Anyway, after that happened we were inseparable, more so than before, and eventually Tess gave up and left town. It turns out that she was an integral part of your group and you needed her to fight the aliens that invade earth later on down the line. But you couldn’t do that effectively without her. So two weeks before he used the granolith as a time machine –“ Max looked intrigued but didn’t interrupt “- he held Isabel in his arms. She was dead.” Max looked shocked. “Then thirty minutes before he came back to our time, he held Michael dead in his arms also.” Max’s countenance looked even worse. “He told me about our wedding that happened when we were 19 – in Vegas.” Max’s face changed yet again at the remembrance of his wedding vision and a small smile played on his lips, then his eyes got really wide as he mouthed the word 'nineteen.' “So we had to change things so that Tess stayed in town so that she would at least be here to fight with you so that we have a better chance of winning the war instead of it being the end of the world.” Liz finally gave out of breath but managed to say one more thing, barely above a whisper. “That’s the hardest thing I ever had to do.”

Max didn’t know what to say. He was overwrought with emotion and he had so many questions. How did she know he wasn’t a shape shifter or a skin disguised as an older version of himself or worse – another kind of alien they don’t even know about yet? How did they use the granolith as a time machine? Time travel was impossible – even Liz knows this. Then he thought briefly on how she had warned him before the summit that the granolith was something powerful. ‘So this is how she knew’ he thought. He just couldn’t believe that he would lose Isabel and Michael. That just couldn’t happen. And Tess…. Could he be wrong? No, he couldn’t be, he just couldn’t be. Liz must be wrong. ‘But Liz hasn’t been wrong before,’ he concious reminded him. He decided to keep all this to himself until after she had fully recovered. There was no way he was going to jeopardize her recovery.

He finally spoke full of all the emotions he was keenly feeling. “Oh, Liz, my Liz, I can’t believe this. This must have been so hard for you. And you did this for me, for the rest of the world. Liz, he – apparently, I – should have never done that to you. There’s so much I have to ask you but I have to get out of here. That nurse right out there is giving me the eye. You rest now Liz and we’ll talk later and get this whole thing worked out.” Max smiled sweetly and kissed her on the forehead. He gently squeezed her hand before he made his way to the door.

Liz looked as if she would cry when he let go of her hand and walked out the doorway. She didn’t want to tell him that just because she shared that with him that it meant they could be together. She would have to wait and tell him later when she had enough strength to make sure he understood.

Michael and Isabel sat there stunned. Michael looked to Maria who smiled nervously and then stared down at the fruit salad she was eating and started picking at it.

“So now you know what I know,” Max told Michael and Isabel. Then he turned to Maria. “Maria, do you think you can fill in any blanks here. I didn’t want to have Liz talk anymore than necessary.”

“I-I’m not sure what I can fill in,” Maria stammered.

“Well, how did she know it wasn’t a skin or shape shifter or some other kind of alien? Why was she so sure it was --- me?”

“She said that he knew things about her and you. Oh, oh, -" she started waving her hands around all excited "-like he told her all about the plans you had for the mariachi band and how you spent two weeks learning all the words from Mr. Delgado. And he told her that when you threw up the red roses that you remembered you liked white so he changed them before they reached you. But I guess most importantly he told her this before it happened,” Maria chimed. She was glad to be able to contribute something, even if it was just knowing something second hand.

Max absorbed that for a moment.

Michael was next, “What about the granolith? What about this time travel stuff?”

“Ummm, I don’t know much about that. Liz could probably tell you more, but from what I got, there is a girl that will become a part of our group. Sounds like she is actually an alien but I’m not sure if it is that or if she was just a smart human that could work on alien technology," she paused a moment in contemplative silence. "Anyway, this girl did some tinkering and modified the granolith into a time machine. I didn’t really get what the granolith was originally for though. I just got the impression that it is really powerful. Definitely not some simple space ship like you dreamed Max,” Maria finished.

Max winced at that one. He had already conceded that he may not have been right in blowing up over a dream he had had. Even though he was still trying to come to terms with that. He still had to think about Tess and her part in this whole thing – even if it meant she was innocent and that he needed to apologize. If this was the case then it sure was going to look bad, especially in light of the fact that Tess might be thinking of leaving town and if she’s really that integral to the group, then it was going to be even worse that it took Liz’s confession in order for him to believe her.

Isabel looked at Max and saw his emotions playing over his face. She reached over and put her hand on his arm. “What if I make a little visit tonight and see what I can see? Maybe that can put your mind fully at ease. What do you say?” Isabel asked him.

Max looked at her gratefully and contemplated it for a minute before he answered. “Yeah, Iz, I do want you to do that. I think it would be best.”

That night Isabel settled down with a picture of Tess. She touched the picture and it rippled beneath her fingertip. Within moments she was being pulled into Tess’s dream. Tess was in the middle of the desert pleading with Max.

“Please Max,” she was pleading. “Please don’t push me away. I’m your destiny. You have to accept me. Without you I’m nothing. Without you I’m alone.”

Mas was just standing there stonefaced. But then Kyle appeared behind her.

“What about me, Tess? You’re not alone with me around. Or do I not matter because I’m just a simple human. You couldn’t be a queen without being with the king. Is that all that matters to you Tess?” he chided her.

“What?? No, that’s not it Kyle,” she was crying. “It’s just that I didn’t plan on becoming involved with anyone else besides Max. Nacedo’s been telling me since I came out of the pod that I was suppose to be with Max. That I had been made for him. If things were different maybe I could – we could – have something.”

“No Tess, I’m don’t think so,” Max finally spoke. “You weren’t made for me. Liz was made for me. We’re soulmates. Nacedo was wrong. He just didn’t want to deal with humans knowing our secret.”

“But you can’t be with Liz! I don’t know what to do with out you Max. I-I’m scared of what things will be like if I’m not with you..”

Kyle spoke again, “Tess, you don’t have to worry with me. I care for you. I’m better for you than Max is. I can care for you the way he can’t. Trust me.”

“She can’t trust you, Kyle. She’s evil. She doesn’t really care about anyone. She only cares about herself and making sure she has a ruling place in our world.”

“No, no, that’s not true Max!! I’m not evil! I don’t know how to show you that I’m not. I care for you, I love you. Please believe me,” she pleaded as Max started walking away towards a figure that looked like Liz.

“That hurts Tess,” Kyle said as he started to walk away. “I care for you, Tess and you can’t even see it. I never thought you were evil and yet you still want Evans. I don’t need that complication in my life. Bye, Tess.”

Then Kyle disappeared and Tess turned to see Max and Liz in a loving embrace, staring at each other with their foreheads touching. Isabel could feel Tess’s utter lonliness as she sat down and started crying.

“Well, what do you think?” Isabel asked Max.

Max ran his fingers through his hair and stared at the bed sheet. Then he looked up with his lips pressed together and forehead furrowed. After a moment he sighed, “I guess that tell s me what I need to know. I know it isn’t solid or anything but I think if she were really this evil being that I dreamed about that she wouldn’t be dreaming those kind of dreams. I don’t think she would really care about what I or Kyle really thought.” He paused a minute and then a grin replaced his serious look. “I think she has a thing for Kyle.”

“Yeah, me too. I think it’s time for a little matchmaking,” Isabel said with raised eyebrows.

Max knocked on the Valenti’s door. He heard some footsteps coming towards the door, the lock slide open and then there he was face to face with Tess. Tess started to shut the door and walk away but Max stopped her.

“Tess, I need to talk to you,” he started.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Max. I can hear you now. All you want to know is what I did to Liz and I don’t feel like arguing with you anymore about it. Okay?” she said.

“No, I came to apologize.”

Tess stopped short and looked at him with suspicious eyes.

“Can I come in and explain?”

Tess stepped aside and opened the door up so he could come in. Max stepped in and walked towards the center of the room.

“Look, I’ve been a real jerk. I can’t explain my behavior away but I just had this really intense dream – one I want to forget about now – and it was so real that I couldn’t dismiss it as just a dream. I took it as a sign of things that were really going to happen. When I heard about Liz I just went off because in the dream you killed Alex in a mindwarp and then covered up his death with a car accident. But I know that you aren’t like that. It just took some time and everyone staying on my case for me to come out of the haze. Do you think you can forgive me and my asinine self?”

Tess’s facial expressions changed with everything he had been telling her. It took her just a few seconds to have a look of relief on her face and then to have a full fledged smile. She then quickly covered the few steps that separated them and gave him a big hug.

“Of course I can forgive you, Max. I knew you would come around soon. It was just a matter of time before you realized that your destined wife would never hurt you like that,” she gushed into his chest.

Max gently took her shoulders and held her back a bit. He looked straight into her eyes. “Tess, I care about you. You are a really good friend and a part of our family.” Tess could already feel the I love Liz speech coming on and her countenance fell. “But I still haven’t come to terms with the whole destiny thing yet. I will always want you in my life, but right now, I don’t see us as any m ore than friends – really good friends. I also think that you are missing a really great opportunity at true love right here under your very own nose.”

She looked at him quizzically at that last remark but he didn’t elaborate. Instead he told her that she was welcome – no she was invited - to come to the hospital to visit Liz if she wanted and that Liz had asked about her. He had to leave right then before he was late for work, so she saw him out and wondered back to her room lost in thought – mourning the fact that Max still hadn’t come around to accepting his destiny with her.

Well here ya go - the next part. It ended at another spot than I had anticipated but I guess that happens sometimes. I'll continue tomorrow!

I also want to thank you again for your wonderful comments and feedback. Keep it coming... it just makes my day!

Two days later Liz came home with all the proper fan fare. Her parents didn’t let her go back to school for the rest of the week. The whole group came by to see her throughout the week in the midst of school and work schedules. By the time Monday came around Liz was more than ready to go back to school. She felt as if she had been out of the loop for far too long. When she walked into the school that Monday morning, reminders of prom were every where. There were posters advertising it everywhere. Every conversation seemed to be centered on who was going with who, who was going to wear what, what party someone was going to attend, etc. Liz had very mixed feelings over the whole thing. A year ago she was so sure that she and Max would go that she bought her dress in anticipation. Now she wasn’t even sure if she was going to go.

“Liz,” Maria squealed. “I’m so glad you’re back to school.” She gave Liz a giant hug.

“Maria,” Liz laughed. “You act as if you didn’t see me just last night.” They start walking towards their lockers.

“I know, I know, it’s just with all this prom talk going on I was feeling left out or something.. Michael is so – so – oh, I don’t know. He doesn’t ‘do’ proms.” She rolls her eyes at that. “He can just infuriate me sometimes.”

“So are you not going to go?”

“I haven’t decided yet. I really, really want to but going stag just isn’t looking real good, know what I mean?”

“Yeah, I know. So maybe we can go together or something. Maybe Alex can be our date… if he’s not going to go with Isabel that is.”

“I don’t know. They are so hard to read. Just as you think they are finally getting it, they aren’t.” Maria throws her hands up in the air as she dramatically rolls her eyes.

“Maybe we should do a little matchmaking or something. It’ll give us something to do if nothing else.”

Maria’s eyes get all wide and gleamy thinking about what plan to hatch first. The suddenly she looks quizzically at Liz.

“I just caught that you aren’t going with Max. What’s going on there? From everything that was said at the hospital I thought you two finally were getting it right again and getting back together. At least I know that’s what Max thinks,” Maria looks at Liz pointedly.

Liz just rolled her head to the side as she looked down at the floor. “Yeah, well, I still need to talk to him about all of that. I haven’t had the strength to argue with him about it and it’s going to take a lot of strength to make him see that just because he knows everything doesn’t mean that we can be together. I mean we still have Tess to worry about and trying to keep her around. She is kind of important no matter how much we may not like each other.”

“Umm, then maybe you don’t know the latest, girl,” Maria said mysteriously. “It looks as if our beloved Tess and our very own human jock, friend of Budda, Kyle Valenti, might be hooking up. Max caught them kissing the day before your accident and Kyle has been very protective of her all week.” Maria finished as if that settled everything.

Liz took that in for a moment and contemplated it as a good thing. But then her expression changed again. This time it was back to the dark look of lonliness.

“Maria, that doesn’t mean anything. Until we hear it from the horse’s mouth that they are a couple, then it isn’t safe to assume anything. Maybe one day things will work out but I really doubt that they will. I gotta get to class so I’ll catch up with you at lunch.”

Liz took off before Maria could say anything.

Alex was the first one to arrive at the group’s table. He sat down and rested his head in his hands looking at the cover of his English book. He was contemplating how and if he should ask Isabel out to the prom. She had been really attentive since their little trip to Las Vegas but he wasn’t sure if it was going to last this time or if it was just another passing fancy. Just as he had decided on his course of action the object of his thoughts gracefully slid in beside him.

“What is it, Alex? Are you having a hard day?” Isabel asked full of concern as she rubbed the back of his shoulders with the hand nearest him. “My, you seem tense.”

“Yeah, well, I just have a few things on my mind. Say, do you want to have dinner tonight?” Alex asked. “There’s something I would like to ask you.”

Isabel’s eyes lit up. She was all giddy inside thinking that Alex was going to be romantic in asking her out to the prom.

“Sure, that sounds fine to me,” she said more calm than she felt. “What did you have in mind?”

“I was thinking of that new little French place out on Running Wind. Let’s say I”ll pick you up around 530 since it’s a school night and I’ll definitely have to be in early for the folks.”

“That sounds perfect, Alex.”

Just then Maria showed up and plopped down on the other side of the table. Ugh, what am I going to do?” she said dramatically rolling her eyes. “It seems as if everyone in Roswell High is pairing up for the big dance but me.” At that she pouted and pulled out her lunch bag.

“Aww, Maria, don’t give up hope yet. Guerin always does things his own way. He’ll come around,” Alex comforted her.

“Right. Not in this life time Whitman.”

Kyle and Tess made their way to the table just as Michael and Max were coming from the opposite direction. Tess visibly straightened which bothered Kyle though he tried not to show it. Isabel and Maria just looked at each with a knowing glance – smiling and nodding ever so slightly.

“What’s that look about ladies?” Alex asked when he noticed the two girls.

“Oh, that’s nothing.”

“Doesn’t mean a thing.”

“Yeeeaaahhh, oookay, what ever you say.”

Just then Liz found her way to the table and before Max had a chance to notice she was there she sat down between Maria and Tess. Not her first choice but it would have to do. Max looked none to thrilled but he had been getting odd vibes off of her all day long. So he decided not to make a big deal out of it and talk to her about it later.

“Hi Liz,” Alex smiled. “How has your first day back been>”

“Oh, nothing beyond normal. Pretty boring really.”

The rest of the meal went by in slight rush. No one mentioned prom the entire meal though it was on the forefront of everyone’s mind. Just before lunch was over Max slid Maria a note under the table to give to Liz. Then he got up to leave along with Michael and Alex. Right after Kyle, Tess and Isabel left Maria handed Liz the note.

“What’s this?”

“It’s a little note that your secret admirer passed to me before he left.”

Liz couldn’t help but grin at her friend’s silliness. She opened up the note and it read: Meet me after school in the parking lot after school by the jeep. Always, Max

Liz had debated with herself throughout the rest of the day if she was going to meet Max or not. She finally convinced herself that she shouldn’t be rude and that they were friends no matter if they were together or not. Even though Max wasn’t quite aware of that fact just yet. Her heart beat sped up dramatically as she approached the jeep and saw him standing there.

“Hi,” he said.

“Well, I’ll bet your wondering what I wanted to talk to you about.”

Liz nodded.

“Maria filled me in on the whole ‘we can’t be together thing’ and even though I don’t agree, I won’t push the point --– right now,” he said firmly. “But I don’t see why we can’t be friends….”

“Of course we can be friends. I don’t want to not be your friend, Max. I never even thought that.”

“It’s okay Liz, I never meant to imply that you did,” he said with a sweet smile as he touched her arm. “Anyway, I was going to ask you if – well, if we could still go to prom like we had planned a long time ago? I mean as friends and nothing more, of course,” he added quickly.

Liz thought for just a moment and then smiled a grateful smile at him, “Yes, Max I would love to be your date for prom. I would like that a lot.”

“Great! Um, I guess we can get together later and discuss the details.”

“Um, sure, that’s sounds great,” Liz said with a shy smile as she bit her lip nervously. “Well, I need to go. Maria is taking me home after school before her shift starts. So I’ll talk to you later. Bye, Max.”

“Bye, Liz,” Max called with a twinkle in his eye.

Later on, Kyle was taking Tess to work at the little boutique that just opened. He kept wondering how he should approach her with this whole prom thing so he finally decided to just say it and get it over with.

“So, Tess,” Kyle started. ‘Ugh, what’s this, my hands are sweating?,’ Kyle thought with surprise. “Has anyone asked you to prom? I’m sure you have got, like, a hundred invitations already.”

“No, um, actually no one has asked yet.”

Shocked, Kyle said, “Really, now that’s a surprise. Well, then, how about going with me?” He paused a moment to look at her as he stopped for the traffic light. “Would – you – go to prom with me Tess?”

Tess’s whole face lit up and she smiled a small shy smile as she replied, “Sure, Kyle, I would love to go to prom with you.”

“You would? I mean, great, that would be great,” Kyle stumbled. The he added wryly at the thought of the conversation he had earlier with his dad. “Maybe we could double with Dad and Mrs. DeLuca.”

“Your dad is taking Maria’s mom to the prom?”

“Yeah, they signed up as chaperones. Isn’t that just grand? I’ll have my dad there to watch every move.”

“You mean you have moves there, Valenti?” Tess teased.

Kyle just shot her a sideways as Tess laughed at him.

Later that evening Alex picked Isabel up precisely at 530 dressed in a pair of navy blue Dockers and an ocean blue silk shirt and a matching navy tie. As if she had known ahead of time, Isabel looked perfect as usual in a fitted ankle-length navy blue suede skirt with a slit in the back, complete with a short-sleeve twin sweater set in a deep powder blue. Her parents shook their heads in amazement.

After they left, Mrs. Evans said, “You’d think someone was trying to tell them something with the way they always match without planning ahead.”

“Yeah, you’d think,” Mr. Evans agreed as he watched Alex drive his daughter away for the evening.

“Here we are madam,” Alex said in his cheesiest French accent, which Isabel just found adorable, as he opened the car door for her.

“Merci,” she answered back with a gleam in her eye.

Alex led her to the front of the restaurant and opened the door for her entrance. Isabel just oohed and ahhed over the quaint little restaurant he had chosen for their little meal. At once the maitre’ de led them to a little secluded table in the corner and a waiter appeared to take their order. After a moment to study the menu they both ordered and the waiter hurried away to fetch their drinks and put their order in. They did a great deal of small talk until their plates arrived. Alex waited until they were nearly done to start talking to her about what was on his mind.

“Isabel, there’s a reason I asked you here tonight and I wanted it to be a nice place for a couple of reasons. Isabel,” Alex paused, unsure if he had gumption to actually say what he had rehearsed all afternoon.

“Yes, Alex,” Isabel prompted with a huge grin on her face, full of anticipation for the question she was sure to come.

“Isabel, I need to know where we stand. As in our relationship,” Isabel’s face took on a puzzled look but Alex didn’t notice as he sat there staring at his nearly empty plate, letting the words just tumble out of their own volition. “See I would really like to take you to prom –“ Isabel’s face lit up again, though still slightly confused “- but I’m just not sure I could handle taking you to something so important and then having my heart broken all over again because you aren’t sure if you’re ready for a relationship. I know that lately you’ve been acting like we’re together in some form or fashion but you and I still haven’t talked about it. I just need to know where I stand in the big scheme of things.”

Isabel sat there for a minute and looked at her hands pulling her lips in between her teeth before taking a deep breath. “A-Alex, I-I don’t know, what to say. I – You know - I have a problem talking about my feelings. I’m just so unsure of what my life is like – or will be like…”

“Isabel, there’s no need to be nervous,” Alex said as he reached across the table and took one of her hands into his and held it gently. “But look at Liz and Max and Michael and Maria. They fully embrace what is happening and look forward to life without reservation… at least most of the time. You know what I mean. I’m no different, Isabel.”

“Yes, I know what you mean. I’ve just been so careful my whole life that it’s hard to let go of that sometimes. Even when I care so much for you. There, I said it, Alex, I really care for you. And I would like nothing better than to be a couple with you – and all that it entails,” Isabel finished with tears in her eyes that threatened to spill over at the least provocation.

Alex let a grin slowly spread across his face. Then he lifted the hand he was holding and kissed her knuckles lightly. “In that case, Ms Evans would you accompany me to the prom?”

“Yes, Mr. Whitman, I would love to accompany you to the prom,” she laughed with abandon at having finally released her heart to love fully.

Maria was in the back room getting ready to leave work for home. It had been a really long shift – not because of the hours because she had only worked three hours and it didn’t really get that busy either during the supposed dinner rush. What made it long was listening to all the kids talk about prom and having to look at Michael every time an order came up. How many times had she said ‘I’m not really sure, we all haven’t finalized our plans yet’ to the question of ‘So Maria, what are you and Michael doing for prom?’ It just about made her want to puke at it all. When she turned around she was face to face with Michael Guerin, the very alien that was making her whole world spin wrong.

“Geez, Michael, give a girl a warning won’t ya! It’s not nice to sneak up on people!”

“Um, I’m sorry, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. I mean, you looked really down out there today.”

“You should know it, spaceboy!” Maria glared at him. Then she just threw up her hands and started to walk out the back door.

“Wait, Maria, I – well, do you want to go to the prom with me, Maria?”

Maria stopped dead in her tracks and slowly turned around with a disbelieving look. “Did I just hear you right? Did you just ask me to the prom? This coming from the one who doesn’t DO prom. Are you serious, Michael?”

“Yeah, I am. I see how unhappy this has made you and I don’t want to see you like that anymore. Especially when I know that I’m the source of your unhappiness which means I can do something about it…”

Maria broke out in a huge grin and squealed as she ran across the room and jumped up into his arms, taking him completely by surprise. He did everything he could not to fall backwards. Maria was showering him with kisses all over his face while interjecting, “Oh, you won’t be sorry, space boy!” “Thank you so much!” “This means so much to me!” and other things of that nature.

“Okay, Maria, calm down. We don’t want Mr. Parker walking in on this. He might misconstrue the situation, ya know?”

Maria immediately straightened up but her face didn’t hide any of the emotions she was feeling. Just one look told you she was walking on cloud nine.
