Author: Me!
Summary: In this book "Teen Ink" written by Teens, Compiled by Stephanie H. Meyer and John Meyer. I read this poem called "Mystery Thawing" Fiction by Heather M. Walker It's based on a girl who dresses slutty and acts hard. She chews gum loud, wears expensive leather and ignore's everyone. There's reason to her acts and of course that's what this fic is about. I looked at the poem and started to transform it into a fic already.
Dedications: To Heather M. Walker who wrote the poem. It's a really good poem and kinda sad. I'll post it at the end of the fic...and to Kayarra! You rock!
Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing! The genius is Heather M. Walker. She came up with the poem I just kinda borrowed the idea for my fic and the title, and I changed quite a few things. I use one line from the poem, but know that nothing is mine. NOTHING. Well except this fic of course....but the plot and ideas are all Heather M. Walker's. I just threw Roswell in and mixed it up.
Author's Note: I know that Plagerism is not acceptable here and I just want to make sure everyone knows I'm not doing that. K? K. You should all check out Teen Ink...fabulous book. Kind of like Chicken Soup. *happy* Oh, and I know that the name's are confusing at first but PLEASE just give it a chance ok?

The fire decided to blaze high and mighty that night. The crackle echoed throughtout the still night, and laughs could be heard all around. Everyone else was asleep, except those celebrating.
A group of 20 Seniors at Roswell High, sat around a fire. It was the night of their Graduation. A night of freedom and fun. Ten girls, ten guys. Each one blowing off the last night of their fun together before college.
"So...who wants to tell the story?" Josh Callan, asked. Blonde hair, always looking good. Most popular guy at RH, cute, and jock. He was the leader of their group....no decision about it. Head of every sport, other than cheerleading of course. No that, that was his girlfriend's job.
"Which category? Romance? Horror? Comedy?" His best friend Chris nudged him, and looked around at the smiling faces.
"How about a little bit of all?" a new voice asked. The group looked up, into the darkness of the desert. "Who's there?"
"Calm down!" A male voice laughed. "We aren't going to hurt you."
"You couldn't if you wanted to!" Ryan, one of the youngest of the group chirped up. The others silenced him, trying to see who was the cause of this disruption.
"This is a closed off party." Cynthia snapped. She tightened her arm around Josh's waist. He grew angry that someone was frightening her.
"Whoa, Turbo, calm down. You said you wanted a story right?" She then stepped into the light. Her silky brown hair shone, and her amber eyes blazed with happiness and excitement. Next to her was a male from South Roswell High. He had sandy brown hair, and the brown eyes of a God. He stood behind the girl.
"South Roswell?" Brianna scowled. "We don't associate with you." The others eyed the letterman jacket on the guy and the blonde girl's yellow and white ribbons tying her hair back.
"Fine, you want to miss out on a story that concerns your high school...so be it." Another girl spoke. Her bright blue eyes flashed defiantly and the three turned to move away.
"Wait!" 'Roxy' Carmine called out.
"Roxy! What are you doing?" Cynthia Carmine, her cousin, snapped at her, kicking dirt on her sneakers. She looked fiercely towards her. Josh led their group but Cynthia was his co-leader. Sure they weren't nice to everyone...but they were nice. Sometimes.
"I wanna hear the story, Cuz." Roxy replied with a shrug. "Maybe they have some good tales." The others looked at the two girls, and Cynthia smiled. "Fine, let's see if they can beat our champion." she raised her eyebrows at Josh and the rest of the gang smiled and laughed.
"Your champion?" The first girl asked uncertain. She crossed her arms over her chest, and tried to stand tall. Being that she was short, she only looked proud.
"Yea. My buddy Chris, over here has always told the best stories, since Freshman year. Every year we come out here and we tell stories of high schoolers before us. Or stories we make up. I doubt you can beat it, but if you do, than we'll let you stay with us awhile. You don't and you admit South Roswell High's football and cheerleading teams sucks compared to Roswell High's teams." Josh smirked and high fived Chris. The guy started to walk away but the blonde grabbed his arm. "Nope, we're in." she said to him. He looked up at the others gloating.
"Naw...they aren't worth me saying that my team sucks." He spat on the ground and the brunette rolled her eyes. "Shut up Xan. She said we're in." She turned back towards the others. "Kylie, go get the others." Kylie, the blond, nodded and disappeared into the desert.
"What others?" Cynthia asked, her blue cheerleading uniform was blowing every which way due to the wind. Shivers raced up and down her back and she looked up at the stars. Turning around, she grabbed a sweater, and pulled it on tightly.
"Just the rest of my family." she answered. Xan put his hands in his pockets, and looked over at the football players. Someone pounced on his back and sent Xan falling forward. The same person caught him and straightened him up. "C.C. I'll kill you." he seethed. She laughed and let her brown eyes laughed. Blonde wavy hair flowed forward and she pushed it back.
"Hi big brother. Miss me?" she asked.
"Not much." he replied. C.C. rolled her eyes and looked at the others. She waved. "Hello." she said. Roxy smiled and said hi also. Several other cheerleaders waved to C.C.
"So while we're waiting..." Chris said, his tone was low and he obviously didn't really care about this story they were going to tell. His voice sounded bored and C.C. frowned.
"Good point. Did they introduce themselves?" C.C. asked.
"No." Cynthia replied icily. She still clung to the coat, but she sat down on a blanket next to her cousin. She tried to pull Josh with her, but he remained standing.
"Well. This is my idiot of a big brother, Xan. My best buddy and cousin, Lynn. I'm C.C."
"Believe me she's alot scarier than she looks." Xan mumbled.
"Who else are we waiting for?" a tall guy asked. He had light skin, with creamy brown hair, that went flat down. He looked down at his watch. "It's 1 in the morning in case you haven't noticed and once your little story is over we have some partying to do."
"Alan, calm down." Josh mumbled. The guy, Alan, nodded and stepped back. C.C. noticed that they seemed to respect Josh, or at least follow him. That's how she was with Lynn for some reason.
"We're just waiting for the rest of my family. Anne, James, Alex Jr., Whitman, and you've already met Kylie." Lynn answered. She rolled her neck from side to and let her brown hair cover her shoulders.
"And you're all related in some way?" Brianna asked.
"Yup, we're all related. We put the FUN in a dysFUNctional family." Lynn looked into the fire and took some matches out of her pocket. She lit a match and brought it down towards the bottom. One of the pieces of wood didn't seem to want to light. She threw the match on and blew on it lightly, smiling when sparks appeared.
"Pyro." someone whispered. Lynn laughed and got up, turning to look at her brother. "Heya Alex. Ready for us?"
"All ready." he replied. She smiled at him and then grabbed the small flashlight she had put in the pocket of her black overalls. She turned towards the others. "You ready?" she asked them.
"Ready for the story?" Cynthia asked. "Ya,we're ready."
"OK, then get moving." C.C. said.
"Excuse me?" Josh asked.
"Look, you said you wanted a story, right?"
"Yes." Roxy answered, confused.
"Well than....did you mean a story that you would remember for the rest of your life or Chapter 30 in the History textbook?" C.C. replied sarcastically.
"Fine, let's go. Which car do we take?" Ashley, another cheerleader, asked Cynthia.
"We're walking. It's fun. Come on." Alex Jr. laughed.
"Walking?" Chris asked. "What kind of story is this?"
"Do you do this to all of the graduating seniors at Roswell High?" Alan, asked looking between the two.
"You're the first." Lynn smiled. "Believe me, you want to miss this than you can but I suggest you come. If you want to stay and party so be it."
"I'm going." Roxy smiled. C.C. wrapped Roxy's arm in hers. "You go girl!" she cheered.
"Chris?" Roxy asked with a smile. Chris rolled his eyes at his girlfriend but he stepped forward. Josh looked at Cynthia who stood with her mouth open. "Let's go Josh." she pulled him forward towards her cousin.
"Who else is coming?" Xan asked.
"Fine, but so help me if you do anything crazy..." Brianna mumbled.
"Alan?" Josh asked, looking at him.
"I'm staying...sorry buddy."
"Well I'll go." Ashley sighed, rolling her eyes.
"No, you're staying." Jeremy said, standing up. He looked exactly like the red haired girl infront of him, which generally is the case for twins.
"Nope, I wanna hear this."
"Than I'm going with you." He grabbed his jacket off the ground and got to his feet. "Let's go then. If no one else is coming I mean."
"Yo, Derick!" Ashley called. One of the guys listening to earphones, pulled them off and joined the others.
"So that's 8 out of 20. You 12 will be here when we get back?" Lynn asked, flashing her light at the others, watching them.
"Ya, just hurry back before the Sheriff comes. We don't need him catching you."
"Why? We're not doing anything wrong." Xan said. He stood by Alex, looking at the Alan.
"He's a grouch. He doesn't like anyone out here late at night. Especially not teenagers." Everyone seemed to notice Lynn look down and her eyes well up. "You just tell him that Lynn says hi, ok? And he has his reasons for not wanting anyone out on this highway."
"Whatever." Alan shrugged. Lynn let Alex pull her away and the 4 led the other 8 far from the fire.
"So where are we going exactly?" Roxy asked. She seemed to be the only one getting along with the others at the moment. Ashley was starting to warm up to Lynn, but otherwise they were walking in groups. Roswell High gang to one side and South Roswell High to the other.
"We can't tell the story there, at the desert. You have to be in the spot where it happened." C.C. answered.
"Wait, where what happened?" Josh demanded. The 12 were walking down the highway, with Lynn's flashlight as their only guide.
"Where our story begins." Alex held Lynn on his back, and she started to swing the flashlight back and forth. The light hit something blue.
"Wait!" Cynthia yelled. Lynn stopped swinging and looked at her.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"I could of sworn I saw a car or something!" Cynthia answered.
"A car? What is it doing out here?" Derick asked.
"Let's check it out. Maybe someone's in trouble." Xan replied. He shared a smile with the others and they headed quietly in the direction that Cynthia had pointed to.
"Would you look at that? A 1997 Ford blue truck." Josh said. "I haven't seen one other than in magazines and old car shops."
"Who's is it? No one's here." Jeremy observed. He checked the tires and each one needed more air, but otherwise nothing seemed wrong with the car. "The tires need air, but they are ok, otherwise."
"Car genius." Ashley muttered. She moved to touch it when C.C. caught her arm. "Don't."
"Why not? It's just a car!" Brianna retorted.
"The last person to touch this car was my Mom." Lynn replied.
"Is this your Mom's car?" Jeremy asked, astonished. What Ashley said about him was true...he was a car genius but only because he was obsessed with old cars, and car parts.
"No. It's a good friend of her's though." Alex answered. "Chill Lynn. I wanna see what's inside anyways. He opened the door and it creaked loudly, as he did.
"It definitely needs some oil." Cynthia replied She started to tap her foot as Alex looked around inside.
"I found some towels, and a couple swimsuits. There's a picture in here too." He came out and looked at it. Smiling he closed the car door.
"What kind of picture?" Brianna's curiousity got the best of her as she grabbed the picture out of her hands.
"Whoa. These people look much like you four." she breezed. She passed the picture around until Roxy got it.
"Who are these people?" she asked. C.C. glanced at it and pointed to the female brunette. "That's Liz Parker, mine and Alex's mom. And the short blond one is Xan and C.C.'s mom Maria DeLuca. The guy next to Liz is my Uncle Alex." Lynn smiled.
"Was." Alex corrected.
"Is!" Lynn snapped. C.C. rolled her eyes at the two and pointed to the other guy. "That was Liz's old boyfriend. Kyle. Kyle Valenti."
"Valenti?" Derick asked, looking closely at the picture.
"Sheriff Valenti's son."
"I didn't know he had a son. This his car?" Jeremy asked. Lynn stepped close to him and nodded."Ya, nice car huh?"
"Very nice." Jeremy replied.
"So let's keep going." Alex said, bringing the two out of their staring game, Lynn shook her head and nodded. "Right." she whispered.
* * *
"I knew I remembered Kyle Valenti!" Josh said 5 minutes later, continuing their walk.
"You do?" C.C. asked in disbelief. Well it couldn't be true, especially since there was NO way he could ever know Kyle.
"Coach talks about him all the time. Member Chris?" Josh slapped Chris' arm as his friend tried to think back on any mention of a Kyle Valenti.
"Right. That Freshman dude. He was the first Freshman to actually score a touchdown." Chris said, smiling at his memory.
"Yup...Coach always brags about him, yet I've never seen him playing for the NFL or anything." Jeremy said. The other girls looked completely clueless.
"Well you wouldn't would you?" C.C. asked glumly, kicking rocks down the road.
"Why not? Something happen to him?" Roxy asked, noticing the girl's mood.
"You could say that." Lynn answered. She dropped from Alex's back and started to walk closer towards Jeremy.
"So, what happened than C.C.?" Derick asked, the blonde girl in the front.
"He died a long time ago." she replied. Everyone fell silent and Xan grabbed the flashlight from C.C. He turned it off.
"What the fuck man?" Josh yelled, stumbling on a rock due to lack of light.
"Hold on." Xan answered. He flashed the light 'on' and 'off' twice. A couple seconds later, a similiar light flashed a little bit away.
"Just a couple more miles." he said with a smile. He turned the small flashlight back on and continued to walk.
"You could have warned us." Cynthia replied. Xan turned around and smirked. "I could have."
"Jerk." She mumbled under her breath.
"I never knew there was a building out here." Brianna said, observing the tiny sight a half a mile away.
"It used to be a gas station before it closed. Let's just say the owner didn't have the heart to keep it going." Alex replied. Roxy tripped and fell to her knees. He rushed over to see if she was allright.
"I'm fine. Just gonna bruise is all." She laughed. Cynthia took her coat off and tore one sleeve off, biting off the seams. She wrapped it around Roxy's knee and held the rest of the coat in her hands. "It was bleeding Roxy." she said. Roxy shrugged and stood up. "Doesn't hurt. Ok, let's keep going. We're almost there."
"You're ok? Do you want me to carry you or anything?" Alex offered. Roxy smiled at him and shook her head. "No, that's fine. Thank you anyways though."
"Sure."
* * *
"I can see why they closed this place down." Cynthia said in disgust looking at the doors. Xan went to open it, and let C.C. and Lynn enter first. He held it open for the others, to enter and waited until Derick, in the back got there before closing it.
"Ew. It really smells in here." Ashley complained.
"Um, Lynn..." Brianna said quietly. Lynn looked over at the girl."Ya."
"Why is there blood on the floor? And, and that white chalk in the outline of a body?" she asked. A quiver was in her voice and Ashley screamed. "Blood?"
"Relax...guys, it's dry." Derick said. He had stepped in some by the door and it left no mark.
"No one had the decency to clean it up?" Cynthia snapped.
"Nope. Welcome back guys. Good to see you all again." Kylie smiled from a different doorway. "I didn't catch everyone's name the first time. So don't mind me if I yell 'hey you'." she smiled at her own joke but whistled when everyone else looked positively scared.
"You can sit down you know." Another girl, with black hair and dark brown eyes said. She was tall, and curved in all the right places. She threw her hair back, over her shoulder and gestured to the blankets on the floor, where stands of food used to be. The others nodded and Roxy smiled her thanks. They sat down carefully, and 2 other guys came from a room in the back.
"Hey!" Whitman smiled. He stood a little shorter than his sister had, and his blonde hair was brushed straightly back.
"Ok, Guys, this is Kylie, Anne, Whitman, and James." C.C. counted the names off her fingers and Lynn pointed to them.
"Oh." Roxy said, looking at their group. "Josh, Chris, Derick, Jeremy, Ashley, Cynthia, Brianna, and me-I'm Roxy."
"Great. Ok ready to get started?" James asked. His curly dirt blonde hair was hid by a baseball cap. His hazel eyes smiled at everyone as he sat on the counter.
"Been ready." Cynthia replied.
"But first...what is this blood from?" Brianna asked. She looked in the center and shivered.
"That's what the story is about. Told ya we couldn't just do it in the desert!" Lynn laughed. "All right, Alex would you like to or should I?"
"Go ahead." Alex gestured with his hand towards the others. Lynn smiled. "Ok. The story I'm about to tell you is something you'll never forget. You'll tell your kids and they'll tell their kids and on and on. If you get too freaked out...then we always have another room you can go into. I wouldn't advise walking alone on this highway."
"Just start already!" Chris said, beginning to lose patience.
"All right, now a while ago, ok, a long time ago right here in Roswell, New Mexico...something happened so horrible that the people of Roswell didn't even want to talk about it. Something that you could never have imagined happening in such a small town like Roswell-"

Thanks for reviewing guys, I really need the feedback!

Name: Elizabeth Anne Parker
School: Roswell High
City: Roswell
State: New Mexico
Age: 18

"Liz!" Maria DeLuca, of Roswell, New Mexico coughed into the phone. "Come in Liz."
"Sorry what?" Liz asked, looking up from the college application. "I spaced sorry,"
"No Liz, you were filling out the Harvard application again huh? Chicka, we just barely passed 9th grade and you're already planning for this stuff."
"I just want to be prepared Maria." Liz sighed, putting the Harvard application into her folder and that folder into her desk. "You should be doing the same."
"I'm not worried about college right now. If I pass 10th that will be a miracle...than 11th, than 12th. When college comes it comes."
"You're right. I just like being planned out."
"Take a look around your room. Believe me hun you're more planned out than anyone in Roswell."
"My room? Lots of people have clean rooms, Maria." Liz laughed, even though she couldn't resist looking around the small room that was hers. Not a wrinkle in her bed sheets, not a single speck of dirt on her floor. Nothing out of place, nothing dirty.
"Ya, people have clean rooms. Not empty ones." Maria snorted, and coughed again.
"You ok?" Liz asked concerned.
"It's just allergies. My mom's latest decided it would be great to get me a cat. Dumbass didn't even ask if I was allergic. So I gave the cat to Kyle."
"Kyle? What, you think he's going to do a good job of keeping it?"
"Hey! He needs a friend with his dad gone all the time." Maria retorted. Liz sighed into the phone. "You still coming to Slide Rock?"
"I wish."
"Your mom?"
"Ya. She's a crack head Liz. A total crackhead. I'm still coughing but only because the cat left furballs somewhere and I can't find them. So she insists I stay home and not go out. I need my 'rest' according to her."
"She still thinks you like Alex huh?" Liz stood up and took the cordless over to her bed, which she carefully sat on.
"Totally. That was so last summer. I mean I realize that nothing will ever happen and that we are complete and total friends. Uh-oh, Demon Mother home. Gotta bounce."
"Later chicka." Liz pulled the phone away from her ear to hear Maria say Happy Birthday, than the dial tone.

"Wait, this is the story that we're going to tell our kids and so on and so forth? I've seen this plot in 5 different movies." Cynthia snapped, laughing.
"It's just the introduction, geez." Lynn replied. "Now where was I? Right. Elizabeth Parker. All American Girl, and a parent's wet dream. Straight A's all year during Freshman year, and she was already planning to go to Harvard. Big things were going to happen to her. She would be one of the few people to leave Roswell, and not come back unsatisfied. Jock older brother, Jock boyfriend, Happy best friend, and happy herself. Life was good. And her 15th birthday was just around the corner...the day that Liz thought couldn't get any better."

"They made up their minds and they started packing. They left before the sun came up that day." Alexander Parker, soon to be Junior at Roswell High, drove along the night highway. Life was good. His kid sister had her 15th birthday that night and she had wanted to spend the day with him, not just Kyle. Too bad Maria wasn't there. Alex always enjoyed flirting with her ever since he found out she had a crush on him.
"Those oldie songs are getting really old, Alex." Liz groaned. She sat in the back seat, feet stretched out, head leaning against the glass.
"An exit to eternal summer slacking, but where were they going without ever knowing the way? Kyle knows this song. Right Kyle?" Alex nudged his best friend, trying to get him to sing along. He rolled down his window, letting the cool air in, and also to dry his wet hair.
"They drank up the wine and they got to talking . They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down, they started walking. Where were they going without ever knowing the way?" Kyle laughed as he sang. Liz pinched his ear hard and he leaned forward, to escape her grasp.
"What have we talked about? Whenever Alex wants you to do something with him you always ask to sign a contract first." Liz reminded her boyfriend.
"I've been with you two years and in that whole time we've never talked about it." Kyle joked.
"Three years, Einstein. Well almost three...in one month." Liz smiled and opened the back window, letting the air rush in through that way. Her hair blew wildly around and her heart beat fast as the car started to bump.
"What's going on?" She asked Alex. He shrugged and stopped the car, getting out. Kyle popped the front open and looked inside. "Nothing wrong man." he shut the lid and started to investigate the tires.
"Your out of gas." Liz said, from inside the car. Alex groaned and leaned against the door. "Sorry Lizzie. I know you wanted to be home before 9."
"Hey, it's ok. Mom can always tape the college program for me. Let's just walk to the gas station a couple miles back."
"We have no money though Liz." Kyle reminded her, grabbing a sweater from the car and tossed it her way. She pulled it over her head. "I know. Maybe we can call Maria to pick us up. We'll just call a tow truck tomorrow morning. Problem solved."
"All right." Alex caught Liz in a headlock and pulled her along the desert. "My sister, the brainiac."
"My brother, the dumbass." Liz mumbled, slipping out from under his arm.
"Hey, watch what you say about me ok? I happen to be very good with computers." Alex answered, straightening up.
"I was kidding bro. You know I love you."
"Who doesn't?" Alex joked. Kyle came up between the two.
"Me. I mean I can smell you all the way over there and whoa!" He laughed. Liz flung herself into his arms and he twirled her around in the air. "You have the most beautiful hair Liz. It matches your pretty eyes. No one else can have pretty eyes like you." Kyle smiled and kissed Liz's lips.
"Lizzie, sing it!"
"Nope. Make Kyle sing it." Liz stuck her tongue out at her brother.
"Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold, and it's always summer, they'll never get cold..."
"They'll never get hungry. They'll never get old and gray. Happy now?" Liz sang.
"Ya!" Alex cheered, as the three danced their way down the highway road. "You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere. They won't make it home, but they really don't care."
"They wanted the highway They're happy there today, today. The children woke up and they couldn't find 'em." Kyle twirled Liz from his arms and pulled her back. "They left before the sun came up that day. They just drove off and left it all behind 'em."
"But where were they going without ever knowing the way?" Alex laughed and spotted the gas station. "Hey Kyle. Race ya, from here to there. First one there's a rotten rose."
"Wait, a second. A rotten rose?" Liz asked, her nose twisted up in disgust.
"Ya. You'll never understand the beauty of roses Lizzie. They represent life. Beautiful. Enchanting."
"And they have thorns on them." Kyle said, confused.
"Even life has a couple of thorns here and there." Alex smiled and showed off his brilliant white teeth. "K, go!" He started to race for the building and Kyle soon followed, calling Alex a cheater on the way.
"Guys! Wait up." Liz yelled, jogging after them, the cold air getting to her. When she did catch up with them they were already inside, asking the old man if they could use his phone.
"Hi." Liz smiled at the man and looked at his nametag. 'Buddy' was there in black and white. The man was very unusual. He wore a pink shirt, a bright green cap with a fish on the front, yellow and orange plaid pants, and blue socks, with sandals. His nose was too big for his face and the corners of his mouth drooped down. The cap covered wrinkles on his forehead and his bushy eyebrows covered his pale blue eyes.
"Phone's in there. Dial 1-800-COLLECT if you call, I gotta start saving up my money now a days." he repied, in a tired voice.
"Thanks Buddy." Liz smiled. The man winked a tired eye at Liz and rested his elbow on the counter. "I'll be a second." She said to Alex and Kyle who were both looking at a rack of magazines. They waved her off and Buddy pointed to a room behind him. There was a glass door leading to the outside and little space where a wooden door hid. It had a glass window that looked out into the store. She stepped inside and left the door open, slightly. She picked up the phone and almost forgot to dial the 1-800.

Liz frowned and put the phone down. Maria wouldn't have turned her phone off would she? She quickly dialed the home phone instead of Maria's private line.

By the time it reached the 6th ring Liz hung up and figured Maria could be taking a bath. She left the room and joined Kyle and Alex.
"She's taking a bath I think. We can stay here for half an hour and I'll call her again." Kyle nodded and wrapped his arm around her waist.
"Buddy, thanks for letting me use the phone. Maria never answered though. Do you think it would be ok if I called her in half an hour?"
Buddy looked over at Kyle and Alex, tiny fear and doubt in his eyes. It went away shortly and and he nodded reluctantly. "Sure."
"Thank you." Kyle said. He started to talk to Buddy about sports and what old teams were like.

Half an Hour Later
"All right, come on Maria. Pick up this time," Liz mumbled, dialing the same number she had before.

"Hey you've reached Maria DeLuca. Guess I'm not home or I'm avoiding your calls. If I don't call you back after I hear your message than it's definitely the latter one. Bye!"
"Hey, Ria. It's Liz. Look, Alex, Kyle, and I ran out of gas on 285. We walked to a gas station and hoped you could come and pick us up and take us home. I guess you're asleep or taking a bath or something. I'll just try calling one of our parents or-"
Liz looked at the look of fear etched on Alex's face. She quickly put the receiver down and stepped closer to the door. Kyle was pushed back towards Alex by someone wearing all black. Even over his face. It was a ski mask, with holes for the eyes and mouth. Liz gasped and put a hand to her mouth. She quickly ran back towards the phone and dialed 911.
"Roswell Police Department, what's your emergency."
"I was on a trip with my brother, and boyfriend and we ran out of gas. We had no choice but to walk to a small gas station on 285. Robbers are in the store and I need some help-"
"Calm down. Just, try to not make them mad, relax. What's your name?"
"Elizabeth Parker, just please hurry."
"A patrol car is already on the way." The officer replied. Liz started to hear Buddy asking them what they wanted and she quickly hung up.
"Please, I don't have much money..."
"Than give us what you do have!" One of the guys snapped. Liz watched 2 strong guys push Buddy. He slowly stood up and put his hands in his pockets, pulling out a 5, some one's, and some small change.
"In the register old man!" the tallest one yelled.
"Can you believe it? This guys a retard." One holding him shook Buddy hard and Liz watched him flinch in pain. Buddy reached for the register and put his hand over the key, pulling it out and slipping it into his pocket while the other guys were laughing. Liz caught Alex's eyes. She pulled a piece of paper out from Buddy's desk and wrote 'I called 911.' Alex narrowed his eyes to read the paper and he got the message, and nodded. The three just had to hold the others off until the cops arrived.
One of the burly touch guys, stepped away from Buddy and pointed his gun at Kyle and Alex. The second one holding Buddy let go to search the rest of the store, not noticing the door where Liz was hiding behind them. She started to breath heavily and she shut her mouth, trying to stop breathing.
"Don't move." the guy warned Kyle and Alex, who both nodded, with their hands up. "Now, slowly and carefully empty your pockets." he commanded.
"We don't have any money. We went down to Slide Rock and our car broke down a couple miles from here." Alex said, not moving his arms. The guy turned towards his friend, still pointing the gun at Buddy. He clicked the revolver pistol and Kyle and Alex yelled for him to put it down.
"If that's all you have old man, than you're useless. Can't even open the register."
"I can." Buddy said softly. He spit on the counter. "I just won't." The guy's icy dark blue eyes, raged with fury and he pulled the trigger, a bullet hitting Buddy in the head. Liz screamed as Kyle and Alex moved towards Buddy, but the other two stopped them. The one with the gun looked towards the door, and Liz moved quickly to duck down.
"Hey, Todd, check that out!" he snapped. Todd, the one who was investigating the store earlier and who now was guarding Alex, moved towards the glass door. Liz closed her eyes in fear and tears silently treked down her cheeks. "Oh god." she whispered. Alex widened his eyes and watched the scene before him. Todd was sure to find Liz hiding and he'd pull her out with them...he might even shoot her. Thinking about Liz dead, Alex grew furious, yet he remained calm, praying for the police to come. Kyle started to move to pull Todd back but the one standing in front of him clicked the gun and put his finger on the trigger. As if in slow motion, Alex jumped in front of Kyle and took the bullet himself. Todd had turned around and Liz had jumped up quickly. She saw her brother fall backwards as the bullet hit his upper arm. Kyle quickly caught him and slid to the ground. "Alex...buddy you ok?" he whispered, his voice tight and quiet. Alex gasped as the blood flowed out of his arm and he grimaced.
"You, protect her. Got it?" he whispered to Kyle, catching his glance. He then looked over at Liz, and mouthed 'Run.' One of the guys walked over and pulled Alex up, causing him to cry out in pain.
"Bobby, this guy jumped in front of his friend." The tall one said. Alex cried out in more pain as the guy made him stand up.
"Lying down is for wuss'." he pointed his gun towards Kyle. "Try anything dumb like that again and I guarantee you, you'll regret it. Now, Todd-" The guy looked at Todd and averted his gaze. Alex glanced towards Liz's hiding spot again. She was looking fearful at the two of them. Now her brown eyes were filled with even more tears. As Kyle started to move towards her again, Bobby turned towards him and pulled the trigger. He pulling the trigger caused the other two to turn around and shoot twice. Alex fell to the floor, a total of 7 bullets in him. He had once again jumped in front of Kyle, pushing him out of the way, towards the counter and Liz. He slumped to the middle of the floor and fell, his head knocking the floor hard. His michievious eyes remained open and wide, staring at his sister, who he had sworn to protect from the first day of her kindergarten years.
**
"Alex, promise me."
"Lizzie, relax. It's only school." a 7 year old glanced down at his 5 year old sister.
"Fine, I promise you I'll protect you against anyone. K?"
"Forever Alex?" the words slurred a little and Alex nodded. "Forever."
Liz giggled and kissed her brother's cheek before running off towards her class
**
Alexander Parker died, 15 seconds after getting shot. The last image running through his head, was of Little Lizzie Parker, and her enchanting brown eyes.

"NO!" Liz screamed. She flung the door open and almost ran towards her brother. The tall guy, closest to the door turned around and slapped her, stopping her in her tracks. He threw her towards the counter, sending her straight into the register. The wind was knocked out of her and Todd held back Kyle.
"Open it!" He yelled, pointing the the register. Liz had watched Buddy slip the key into his pocket and if she had been in her head at the moment she probably would have gotten the key, opened the register, and handed them all of the money. Instead she stared down at her brother's dead body which had been moving seconds before.
"You killed him." she whispered, not even paying attention to them. "Alex." she sobbed. Bobby came and shook her towards the register again.
"Bobby, I got this chick...you and Todd go check that office. He has to have some more money in there."
"Whatever ya say, Terry." Todd let go of Kyle, who flung his arm out of Todd's grasp. The two walked into the room where Liz had been moments before. She sobbed and the liquid burned as it fell from her eyes onto her cheeks. Her vision clouded. Terry leaned across the counter.
"Sweet cheeks, open it." he commanded. Liz looked into his eyes and recoiled. That wasn't a person staring back at her. It was a monster.
"We don't work here." Kyle said, his own voice wavering as he stood the closest to Alex's body. Terry rolled his eyes and stepped away from Liz. "Did I ask you? I know you don't work here!" he snapped. Kyle looked towards Alex. As Terry moved to step away, Kyle kicked Alex's legs out, causing Terry to fall on the ground and lose control of his gun.
"Run Liz!" he yelled, hopping over the counter. Bobby and Todd heard the commotion and they stepped to the door. Kyle pushed against it and locked it from the outside, trapping the two inside. Liz stood petrified, too afraid to move, or to think as Kyle opened the glass door, leading to the outside. "Go Liz." Terry had gotten back up by now and grabbed his gun. He clicked it and Kyle pushed Liz outside, never having time to turn around before 3 shots rang out into the air, each one hitting Kyle in the back. He slumped against the glass, mumbling Liz over and over. She saw Terry's face appear from behind the counter and Liz did what her brother and Kyle told her to do. She ran. Into the darkness, away from the gas station.
'Where was Maria?'
'Where were the police?'
'Could Kyle still live?'
'Will they chase after me?'
'Oh god, Alex!'
Thoughts ran through Liz's head. Her sides ached, her eyes hurt, Her legs were weak but most of all, her heart was broken. It was her fault. She suggested that they all go to the gas station and call Maria. But Maria was sick, Liz should have known that and suggested that they push the car along, to Roswell. That had to be closer to them than the gas station, 4 1/2 miles away. Maybe Buddy would have closed the gas station instead of keeping it open waiting for Liz and the others to get a ride, and he would have been safe. Alex and Kyle would still be alive, singing that dumb song of thiers.
By now, Liz had forgotten how far she had just ran, and where she was trying to get. Headlights and flashing blue and red lights caused Liz to stop and she waved her arms frantically in the air. The cars stopped and officers got out.
"Mam, are you all right?" one of them said. Not far behind him was another car. Liz refused to say anything to the first officer. All she could do was run into Sheriff Valenti's arms, and sob.
"Where's Kyle and Alex?" he asked. Liz's body now wracked with sobs. She realized she was wearing Kyle's sweatshirt, his letterman sweater. She started to smell it and a wave of convulsion and guilt passed over her.
"I'm so sorry. So sorry." she mumbled.
"Shh, it'll all be ok." The Sheriff started to rub her back as he hugged her, trying to calm down Liz Parker, Roswell's Small Town Girl. But he had no idea that things wouldn't be all right. He had no idea that right at that second 3 criminals escaped into the night towards Albuquerque. He had no idea Alexander Parker was dead. He had no idea that his son was taking his last breath of air as he spoke. And he had no idea that Liz Parker, would be forever changed.

Liz, isn't 18. She's 15. The thing at the beginning was her preparing for college even though it's four years away!

Hey everyone! Thanks for all the lovely replies! I love them. Guys, yes Alex and Kyle are dead. There will be flashbacks and stuff like that but I love those 2 guys like no other. LOL, have faith. This story will turn out better.... I HOPE!

Chapter 3

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,

"Why isn't she crying?"
"Maybe she's still in shock."
"Still...if that were me I'd be crying."
"Well it isn't you so shh!"

Liz Parker, heard these whispers throughout the funeral home. Yes, she wasn't crying. She had cried out all her tears. Next to her, her father held onto her right hand, while her mother grasped her left.

That saved a wretch like me....

She breathed in a shaky sigh, and tucked a strand of brown hair behind one ear. A hand landed on her shoulder and Liz turned to see Sheriff Valenti the owner of the hand. She smiled warily at him. She had felt extremely bad ever since that night...

**

"Where's Kyle?" Sheriff Valenti looked deep into the 15 year old's eyes. She pointed down the road.

"He-He-" she broke down into another set of sobs. "He saved my life."

**

I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

Maria DeLuca sang with tears in her eyes, on her face, and on her clothes. People approached the caskets in which her two friends were entombed. Alex, sweet Alex, not looking even dead. Just like a wax doll. Kyle looked the same. Maria would never see them smile, hear them laugh, or just be with them. She looked over at her last friend, if she even was that. Liz's eyes were blank as she stared at the two caskets.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.

"Lizzie, do you wanna go up?" her father asked her.
Lizzie. Lizzie. Alex called her Lizzie. "Maybe later Dad."

"Sweetie he's watching over us right now. Him and Kyle are watching over us." her mother said, trying to convince herself that her son was still with them.

"I know, Mom."

And Grace, my fears relieved.

**

"We should make a report on this." Deputy Hanson said to the still Sheriff. "You do it Hanson, I can't think right now."

He looked over at Liz Parker and slung an arm around her shoulders.

"I'm so sorry Sheriff. It was all my fault." she cried.

"No, it wasn't." He tried to sooth her but all she could do was cry harder.

"They're heroes, now." He said, smiling at her.

"They always were. They always were."

**

How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

A liquid drop slid down Liz's cheek and she quickly brushed it away, only her mother noticing.

"It's ok to cry Liz. It's ok to cry." she whispered, tears in her eyes and stains on her cheeks.

"If only it was Mom." she replied, before standing up and dropping her mom's and dad's hands. She walked slowly up the coffin's, past Maria. She stopped at Kyle's, and looked at his face. His eyelids closed, shutting out shining blue eyes, and his mouth sewed together. She slowly put a shaky hand down to push back a small piece of hair.

"Is she allowed to do that?" A voice asked, loudly.

"Shh!" many people whispered, their attention drawn to the brunette girl. Liz bent down and took a quick intake of breath before kissing his forehead and standing up.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.

She walked over to Alex's coffin and placed the red rose on is chest.

"I cut off the thorn's for you, Alex. No more thorns in your world, big brother." And with that Liz turned her back. Her eyes locked with Maria's.

Maria averted her gaze, at the coldness she saw in Liz's eyes. She deserved it though, and she knew it.

**

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.

"Maria!"

"Yea Mom?" Maria called, throwing down the latest Teen People issue. Amy DeLuca entered, in jeans and a simple white tank top.

"I have to go do a job."

"Now?"

"Yes, now. The shipment just came in and I promised Mr. Marlow I would bring it over as soon as it did." Amy snapped, she pushed her keys in her back pocket. "Sean is coming over to watch after you."

"I don't need anyone to watch me!" Maria yelled. Her mom rolled her eyes.

"Yes you do."

"So you pick Sean? Sean as in your nephew who just got out of jail? You trust him with your precious daughter?"

"I'm not even going to respond Maria. Just, be safe ok? I don't want to have to worry about you while I'm gone." Amy said. She gave Maria a kiss on the cheek and picked up an old plate before walking out. "Clean your room!"

"I'm sick Mom remember?" Maria yelled sarcastically. Her only response was the shutting of the door.

"Great."

**

T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

"I'm sorry Liz." Maria mumbled as Liz passed her again. Liz spun around and looked Maria up and down. She never even responded to Maria before walking out the funeral door. "I'll always be here for you. I promise."

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.

**

"Hello?"

"Mrs. Parker? Hey it's Maria!" Maria smiled. "Are Liz and Alex still home?" Please be home. Please be home. Please be home.

"No, Kyle came and picked them up a couple hours ago for Slide Rock."

"Ok, thanks Mrs. P," Maria's tone of voice dropped.

"I'll have her call you as soon as she gets home, is that ok?"

"Sure,"

"Or should I have Alex call?" Mrs. Parker teased. Maria laughed and shook her head. "You are one cool Mom, Mrs. P. G'night."

"G'night Maria."

**

He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

Liz sat down outside the funeral home, and looked towards the sun, and the sky. They both didn't seem to be as bright as the day before. The clouds in the blue sky now seemed to spell out words. 'Kyle', 'Alex', 'guilty'...any cloud would look like a word to remind Liz what had happened a few days before, everyone who had died, and the only survivor left who didn't even deserve to be the one living.

**

"This is Roswell, New Mexico, Sheriff. It's one of the biggest tourist attractions in the U.S. Now if word gets out about this, no one will want to come."

"What are you saying? I'm just supposed to pass it off as drunk driving or a car accident?" Sheriff Valenti yelled. His face was bright red, and the man at the end of the Sheriff's hostility, pulled off his wire-rimmed glasses.

"Look, I don't make decisions like this, the Mayor of New Mexico does, and he says to find a way to not let this out."

"Well you go back to him and you tell him it wasn't his son that was murdered." When the man seemed to disagree the Sheriff threw a punch at him. "I won't have everyone thinking my son got his friend and himself killed. Kyle didn't drink and drive, I taught him well."

"I'm sure you did Sheriff Valenti, but if the Mayor has to come down here he won't be happy."

"Get out of my office."

**

When we've been here a thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.

**

"Hey, kid." Sean DeLuca, sang, walking into Maria's house, slamming the door shut loudly.

"I'm not a kid Sean. I'm an extremely bored teenager, ready to kill the next person who pisses me off."

"Wanna go to a party?" Sean asked, shrugging. Maria looked towards him sharply. "Where?"

"It's in Nevada, we could drive there, stay a couple hours and head back. Unless you're feeling too sick-"

"I'll be ready in 20, no no 30 minutes. Wait, make it 45." Maria yelled, running through the house trying to find clothes to wear. "Hey Sean, what kind of party? It's not an I-have-to-find-a-girl-and-get-her-in-bed-now kinda party right?"

"All parties are like that Maria."

"God I love you." Maria said sarcastically, grabbing a nearby jean shirt. "This good?" she asked, putting it on and walking around in a circle. Sean glanced at her and shook his head.

"What's wrong with it?"

"It screams 'Freshman'."

"Because I'm not one?"

"Oh just get dressed."

**

We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

**

"Ugh, I hate this kind of music." Tess Guerin, complained, leaning back against the counter.

"This music rocks." Her brother argued.

"What do you know?" she replied.

"You two fight way too much."

"Shut up Izzy." Tess snapped, at her cousin. "We do not. Besides even if we do it's commonly."

"Me and Max never fight like you and Michael."

"That's because you and Max aren't brother and sister."

"Thank God." Max replied, laughing.

"I heard that, Max dear."

"I know Isabel, it's why I said it."

"Fighting again guys?" Sean asked, stepping up to the group. Tess squealed and jumped into his arms. "I missed you."

"You missed him?" Maria sputtered, looking at her dumb cousin. He held his hand out to her and Maria dug in her shirt. She pulled out a 20 and placed it in his hand. "Cheapskate."

"Who's this?" Michael asked. Maria shot him a look. "Maria DeLuca, his cousin. Believe me it's not by choice." Michael smiled at Maria and held out a hand. "Want to dance?"

"Sure."

"Hey she's a looking no touching thing!" Sean yelled after the two frustrated. Isabel laughed. "You've never mentioned her."

"Ever wonder why?" He replied before Tess pulled his arm away. Isabel grabbed Max's hand tightly. "Max, there he is." she gasped.

"Who?"

"Jesse Ramirez! I love him, I do."

"You've never even talked to him." Max said, looking unbelievably at his cousin. She pinched his arm and walked away, towards Jesse. Max looked around and noticed he was alone.

"Great."

**

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....

**

"Maria, chicka, you gotta call me!" Tess gushed, hugging her new friend goodbye. Maria nodded. "Ya, you guys definitely gotta meet Kyle, Alex, and Liz. They'll love you."

"Hey, get my number from Tess and call me too." Isabel smiled. She nudged Michael in the side and pushed him towards Maria.

"You got my number right?" he asked. Sean rolled his eyes and pulled Maria away. "She'll look you all up in the freakin phone book." Maria pulled her arm away as the two walked towards the car. "Since when did you grow all protective of me? You never did it in the 5th grade!"

"Did you have boobs in the 5th grade? Didn't think so."

**

I once was lost but now am found,

**

Maria crawled through her window and fell onto her desk, knocking a whole bunch of candles over. She winced and shut her eyes. Nothing. She cracked an eye open and looked around. No mom storming in to see where she was. She smiled and pulled her legs through the window. Hopping onto the floor Maria quickly undressed and pulled on pajamas. She checked her appearance in the mirror and grabbed the nearest kleenex. She licked one part of the tissue and rubbed it over her eyes. She followed that system until she was sure that no make up remained.

"Now, for the touch." she mumbled. Maria rubbed her eyes really hard, trying to make them look tired, and when she walked out of the room she cringed at the sunlight.

"Mom?" she called. She heard sobs from the kitchen and her face became confused. "Mom?" she called more urgently. She approached the kitchen and saw her mom with her head in her hands, and her shoulders shaking from hard sobs. She looked up at Maria.

"Oh sweetie." she mumbled getting up and hugging Maria tightly.

"What's wrong?"

"You don't know?"

"Know, what? I've been sleeping." Her mom looked at her searching her eyes. "Oh, hey mom, do you mind if I go to Lizzie's later? I really wanna see how her birthday went yesterday and I promise I won't sleep with Alex-"

"No, sweetie, I don't think you should go over. Last night there was- there was a....horrible accident."

"Mom?"

"Kyle and Alex...are dead sweetie, they died last night." Maria shook her head, her vision blurry. "How?" she demanded not even hearing her mother's explantion. She shook her head and grabbed for her mom's hand before fainting.

**

Was blind, but now, I see.

Dear Journal-

You know I've been thinking lately about how good life was and that I had it great compared to any other family. I had Alex, I had Mom, I had Dad, I had Maria, hey I had Kyle. Yes, life was good. Than my birthday came and I had to go and make a decision like walking to the gas station 4 miles away. At the time, I couldn't wait to get home and curl up into bed. I missed Maria, and being the only girl kinda got to me but I forgot about it. Spending time with Alex, and Kyle is one of my favorite things to do other than hang with Maria or read. The great Einstein once said, "There are two ways to live life. One as if everything is a miracle and the other as if nothing is." If you had asked me what he meant in that statement weeks ago, I would have only been able to say, I have no idea. Now, I can say that from my perspective, Einstein is simply comparing optimistic people, and pessimistic people. Opstimistic people simply live life looking at all the good things. If they get robbed, at least they weren't there when it happened. (bad example) If pessimistic people get robbed they look at it like, great what else can go wrong?

I grouped myself and guess which group I was placed in? Go Pessimistics. Even in writing I sound sarcastic. If Alex was here he'd say something like 'Turn that frown upside down' or 'Don't frown because you never know who's falling in love with that smile.' Yup. Brother of the year. And I wouldn't trade him for the world. At the end of 8th grade, me and Kyle got into a fight over High School. I thought he would ditch me for some bimbo cheerleader as soon as I got to high school. Kyle refused to talk to me, after I accused him of, plain to say, cheating. Even though I never said that at the time. Sure I thought it but no accusations were made! Later Alex pointed out to me that if Kyle was going to cheat he would have done it and broken up with me. That didn't make me feel too much better, but Alex calling Kyle over to talk to me did.

Notice how much Alex has done for me? I never even got to thank him for it-

No! I'm not going to cry. It's not gonna happen. Why? Because I cried out all my tears. I have no one anymore. No one can possibly understand my pain. Maria? Ha, she ditched me on my birthday to go to a party. I know she tried to get a hold of me, she told me. But, it's not about that. If she had been home she would have picked up the phone the first time I called, and driven over. End of story, we would have been safe.

Do I blame Maria? Yes, and no. Is this another pessimistic attack? Yes. Maria should have been there. She says she's there for me but is that just if there isn't a party she has to go to? I blame myself more than Maria in a tiny way. Sure, I got away. I lived. But why? Why me? Alex over me anyday. He's done a lot better things than I could have ever done, and yet he's not here anymore. I think God's just selfish. I mean, everyone says that God takes the best ones first and I have to wonder why? Is he so selfish he wants them for himself? And I thought about why he would take the best ones first...wouldn't he take them last? Then again, Hell on Earth is what it's all about. Maybe we're left here because life is Hell. Especially life without my brother.

I don't know why I'm writing to you. I don't even feel like saying anything to anyone. I guess I really wanted to just say good bye. Yes, good bye. Liz Parker is someone I want to forget. I want to forget her memories, her past, just everything her. So for the last time Journal,

Forever yours-
Liz Parker--wait who?

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....

I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

What do you guys think? Thumbs up or down?

No love at all. *sigh* seems to be happening to all my fics.

"Isabel, can you freakin' believe this?" Tess snapped, at her closest friend and cousin. Max rolled his eyes.
"I know. Our parents are punishing us way harsher than they could." Isabel replied, taking a piece of gum from Tess, and popping it into her mouth also.
"It isn't that bad of a punishment. Oh, big deal, you have to try out for the cheerleading squad again..." Michael said annoyed. They had been arguing the whole drive over to Roswell. A couple of weeks ago each of their parents decided it would be best if the three familes moved to Roswell, a place where they wouldn't see much 'excitement'. So they got drunk one night? Big deal.
"Not that bad of a punishment? Michael, I was just beginning to get to know alot of the Seniors, and Juniors. God!" Tess shouted. Max looked towards Michael, and laughed.
"And Jesse and me were finally doing really well. When I told him I was moving he got all sad and I bet you I lost all chances of ever being with him!" Isabel retorted, looked frustratingly at the desert. "I miss Nevada."
Max shifted as he drove behind the big 'Movin' In Style' van, Michael and Tess' parents were currently driving.
"At the next rest stop does anyone have to go to the bathroom?" Tess whined, twirling a strand of hair around her fingers.
"No." Isabel sighed. Michael shook his head.
"Why?" Max asked, looking over at his cousin who dropped the strand of hair. "Because maybe Mom, Dad, Aunt Janey, Uncle David, Aunt Diane, and Uncle Phillip will let us drive ahead and drive around. It's not like the place is big enough for us to actually get lost."
"Good idea. Didn't Maria say something about a Crashdown Cafe?" Max asked, looking over at Michael for comformation, and was surprised when he saw the smile on Michael's face.
"I totally forgot that Maria lived here!" Tess shrieked, smiling. "Well that's one good thing about being here."
"Ya, good. I thought we were gonna be the new kids all over again." Isabel smiled, and she and Tess high fived in the back.
"Happy Michael?" Max teased. Michael quickly lost the smile and turned towards him. "What? I'm not happy."
"Sure you aren't." Isabel chided. Tess smirked. "Oh Maria."
"Harder, deeper." Isabel laughed along with her cousin. Michael reached back to hit the two, and Max quickly swerved over at the rest stop.
"Hey, mom, dad, we don't have to go so we were wondering if we could just drive into town..."
"Max, you don't know the way to the house." Diane smiled.
"Well we know the address, plus Michael's girlfriend could help us. She does live here after all!"
"What's this about Mikey's girlfriend?" Hank asked, walking over to the group. Sidney smiled and nudged her husband in the stomach as Michael blushed. "You guys can go, but be at the house before 5. We still have to unpack you know."
"Drive, Maxwell," Michael commanded, wanting to leave the stares of the others. Tess laughed and avoided her brother's glare as Max drove away.
"So we headed to the Crashdown Cafe?" Isabel asked, looking over at the three of her cousins.
"Yea. Maybe we can check out and other places too." Michael answered. "Other places? You mean other restuarants?"
"No Tess. I mean other alien places." Michael replied, rolling his eyes, and emphasizing on the word alien. Tess' lips formed into an 'O'. "Right."
"Michael, we can't make ourselves noticeable." Max lectured, his voice hard and firm.
"Did you think he was just going to walk up to someone on the street and ask where the aliens landed and if they hid anything?" Isabel snapped. Max glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
"It'd be ok if he did." Tess said, leaning in between the two front seats.
"What? Are you crazy?" Isabel yelled, looking at Tess as if she had just grown antennas.
"It's the alien capitol. If I went up to someone and asked where they crashed they'd tell me thinking I was a tourist."
"That's true." Max admitted.
"Tess, you're brilliant!" Michael cheered, smiling.
"Ya well, all the good alien genes must of been passed down to me!" Tess smirked.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"Wait a sec....alien genes?" Derick laughed. Chris laughed with him. Roxy rolled her eyes at the two.
"So they were aliens?" She asked excited. Derick and Chris stopped laughing. "You're interested in this?"
"It's Roswell...course I am. Keep going Lynn." Roxy kept her gaze on Lynn, incouraging her to talk.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"Hey, guys. There's someone up there!" Isabel said.
"And?"
"Maybe they need a ride dumbass."
"Who's the dumbass? I'm not offering rides to hitchhikers!"
"She isn't a hitchhiker. I don't see a thumb." Tess said, smiling. Isabel smirked at Michael to say 'I told you so.'
"Than maybe she doesn't want a ride."
"Guys...that kind of looks like Maria." Max spoke. He quickly sped up and honked the horn.
**
Maria stumbled along the road back to town, she had just run it hours before, but stopped at the sign signaling highway 285. Liz had walked in the Crashdown in her new attire, and of course, gave Maria the cold shoulder. Maria was driven to tears as she changed out of her uniform and ran out the door.
"Hey, need a ride?" Sean called, driving slowly. Maria turned towards him and glared. "No!"
"Ok." Sean replied. He eased his car backwards and Maria kept walking.
"You sure?" he called again. "Yes! Now go away."
**
A car honked at Maria again and she grew angry. "God dammit Sean, I said I don't need a fucking ride!" she yelled, turning around. Tears coursed down her face and she gasped when she saw who it was. "Oh God, I'm so sorry, I thought you guys were Sean."
"Ya, we got that. What's wrong Maria?" Tess asked, getting out of the car. Maria looked past her at the Highway 285 sign. She smiled lightly and shook her head. "Nothing, forget it." She gave Tess a quick hug. "What are you guys doing here?"
"We moved here. Didn't Sean give you our message?" Isabel asked, after giving Maria a quick hug.
"I haven't really been talking to Sean, or anyone for that matter, for a while now. Just kinda been caught up in some other stuff." Maria answered, with a shrug.
"Well, we're starving, and new to Roswell. Wanna show us a good place to eat?" Max offered, gesturing towards the car. Maria looked at it warily.
"The Crashdown has the best food around. Kyle used to cook these burgers so good, and he tried to teach Alex, but when Alex tried he burnt half the burgers. Liz and I almost died laughing over the look on Mr. P's face, hearing customer's complain."
"Sounds great." Michael replied, holding the door open for Maria. She shrugged again and hopped into the back, Tess and Isabel following her.
"So, this Crashdown place serves good stuff right? I mean not alien heads or anything?" Isabel asked, looking sick as she talked. Maria laughed for the first time since the funeral, and smiled. "Welcome to Roswell."
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"Wait, so Maria's crying because Liz got some new clothes or something?" Cynthia asked. C.C. rolled her eyes. "If you stopped interrupting the damn story then you would freakin know."
"Geez, someone's high on testosterone." Cynthia mumbled, receiving a glare from Lynn.
"Wait, I'm confused. How could Maria be laughing and smiling with these people right after her best friends were buried." Roxy said, shaking her head.
"It wasn't right after the funeral." Whitman replied.
"But, it was pretty darn close to it. She obviously barely knows these people. She met them what? One time and now they are all best friends?"
"Roxy, Liz basically ditched Maria, and when Tess and the others came to town, Maria took that as an invatation to not being lonely." Alex said, glancing at Roxy and Chris. Roxy shrugged. "Keep going."
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~

Liz gazed at her reflection. When she had walked through the Crashdown doors, Maria's mouth had dropped open in response. And Liz was happy...wasn't she? Maria knew nothing about Liz now. Right?
**
"Thank you sir, I'm glad you stopped by." Maria smiled at one of the men, paying for his coffee at the register. He tipped his hat and slowly walked out the door, which was held open for him by a petite, raven haired, girl. She pulled the sunglasses away from her pale white face. Maria gasped and watched Little Lizzie Parker strut through the restaurant. She wore black fishnet tights, black stiletto heels, a short velvet red dress, with a gold chain around the middle, and a black choker. She snapped gum loudly in her mouth, her glossy red lips opening and closing in sighs of boredom. She turned her eyes to look at Maria and Maria froze. The chocolate brown eyes Kyle Valenti once adored so, were now a dark purple, close to black. Black eyeliner covered most of Liz's surrounding eyes.
"Liz." Maria gasped as Liz got closer. She hadn't gasped because of Liz's new look. Sure it shocked her to hell and back, but the tattoo was even more shocking. That's a to-hell-to-heaven-to-hell-and-back shock. It was a red rose that started on her right shoulder, and the vine wove around her middle, twirled around her back, and ended on the top of her left shoulder and contained two thorns.
"The name's Mystery. Get it right DeLuca." Liz snapped, as she walked away from the cashier. Mr. and Mrs. Parker watched their daughter snap at her once best friend. With a hand over her mouth, to stop the throw up, Maria ran into the back and quickly changed into her street clothes.
"Maria-" Mr. Parker tried to stop her and Maria spun around.
"Look, Mr. P, I know that I'm supposed to be working today, but can you get Courtney to? I'm sure she'll cover my shifts, look I gotta go." with that, Maria was gone from sight. Jeff Parker sighed and looked down at the purse in his hands.
"That's not what I was stopping you for."
**
"It looks...nice?" Isabel said from the backseat. Maria smiled and shook her head. "I know, believe me I know. This place is pretty ding dang darn alien infested. But, I'm sure that on another planet aliens are doing the same thing with human infested restaurants, and saying the same thing."
"You...you believe in aliens?" Michael asked, disbelievingly.
"Everyone in Roswell has to. It's like some unwritten rule or something." Maria shook her head and lead the four through the door.
"Wow." Max said, looking around.
"Ya." Maria replied, leading them into a booth. Isabel and Max sat in one, while Tess and Michael sat across from them, Michael the closest to the edge. Maria pulled a chair over to sit by Isabel and Michael.
"Um...what's an alien blast?" Tess asked, looking up from the menu.
"Ya, and what's a Will Smith Burger?" Max asked, confused.
"New to Roswell than?" Courtney smiled, taking out her order pad. "Hi, I'm Courtney."
"Hi Courtney." Maria smiled. Courtney rolled her eyes. "Maria, you left me with your shift."
"Ya, I know."
"Well...now that you're here you can work." Courtney replied.
"Call Pam and ask her to come."
"She doesn't work here Maria." Courtney replied icily.
"Maybe she should start then. She spends enough time here." Maria suggested, casting an apologetic glance at the others.
"Whatever, what do you want?" she looked towards Max.
"Um, space fries, a galaxy sub, and a cherry coke." he replied, handing her the menu. Courtney wrote it down and turned towards Tess.
"Space fries sound good. I'll have a cherry coke too."
"You?" Courtney asked, looked over at Isabel. Isabel scrunched up her nose. "Saucer Salad, and a cherry coke."
"I'll be daring. Get me an alien blast." Michael shrugged, tossing Courtney the menu. "Maria?"
"Nothing for me. Except a water." Maria replied. "Need any help?"
Courtney, who seemed to forget about the fight she had with Maria seconds before looked around at the empty cafe. "Naw, I'm good today. You just owe me one."
"That was who?" Tess whispered, as soon as she walked away.
"That's Courtney Scatalia. She's really nice once you get to know her. But she has a couple mood swings every now and then."
"And who's Pam?" Isabel asked, getting involved in the conversation.
"Pam Troy...god, kill me now. Pam is Courtney's best friend and Satan's spawn. The girl is completely evil." Maria answered, with a groan.
"She sounds bad." Max said, with a smirk.
"Bad doesn't even cut it. She made my life a nightmare all through middle school."
"So why are you friend's with her best friend?" Michael asked. Maria turned to look at him. "Because Courtney works here and when a friend of Pam's works with one of you than she backs off. Besides, me and Courtney aren't friends. We just work together. Once we get to school she acts like she doesn't know me and I choose to do the same."
"Ah....the horrible school." Tess groaned. "I almost forget we moved here for a second."
"Well luckily, school hasn't started yet. I mean you still have time to try out for cheerleading and do all that. That is if you're into that stuff." Maria smiled as Courtney came back, and handed out the drinks.
"The food will be ready in a second, I just gave Kyle the order a second ago." Courtney realized her mistake and she looked slowly over at Maria. "I meant Jose, Maria."
"It's ok Courtney." Maria replied.
"Kyle just worked here for so long so..."
"It's ok." Maria said again, this time more firmly. Courtney nodded and briefly glanced at the others before walking away. The table was filled in silence until Tess coughed. "Cheerleading...so any good people on the squad we should know about?"
"Yea, I'm on the cheerleading squad myself. The coach, Mrs. Gandrake, is really cool. But most of the time she's sleeping so the captain controls the squad. Now Lisa is really nice. And I mean really nice. Especially to Freshman, which is extremely good for me. Or it was. Anyways, Katie, her best friend, is co-captain and she's energetic, but not as nice as Lisa. She gives us a hard time, and always pushes us to work harder. Samantha, is the leader of the drill squad. They do all the dances AND they participate in some cheers. You can be in both, but Freshman can only join the cheerleading squad. Since we're going to be Sophmores that isn't a problem. The rest of the girls on the team just shut up and listen to the captains. Personally I try to become friends with all of them so I have more chances of knowing everybody this year."
Maria took one sip of her water before setting it down. "What?" she asked, as the others stared at her in shock.
"You said that all in like one breath." Isabel said amazed.
"Sean says I talk too much, but it's only because he doesn't talk at all, unless there's a girl nearby and he wants to hit on her." Maria winced when she saw Tess frown. "That was before he met you Tess." she quickly added.
"Right." Michael, picked up a spoon and dug into his alien blast.
"Do you play sports?" Maria asked Max, and Michael. They looked at each other than back at Maria, and shrugged.
"Ya, we play football, basketball, and Michael plays baseball."
"That's cool. What were you guys last year?"
"On the Freshman team, Michael was running back, and Max was quarter back."
"That's impressive." Maria commented. She noticed Mr. Parker walking over to the group and she smiled. "Mr. P, hi. Sorry I left in a hurry-" He cut her off with a small smile and a wave of the hand. "Don't you worry about it Maria. It's fine. Besides, Courtney will be getting extra tips..."
"The girl does love money." Maria laughed and looked at the others. "Mr. P, these are the new victims of Roswell. Isabel Whitman, Max Evans, and Michael and Tess Guerin. They're all cousins."
"Well that's great, how do you guys like Roswell so far?" Mr. Parker asked, smiling at the four.
"It's...different." Isabel replied with a smile. Mr. Parker managed a small smile. "You kids going to Roswell High or West Roswell?"
"Roswell High, sir." Michael stated. Maria smiled at him, and then quickly looked away.
"Great school, great school." Mr. Parker blinked twice and then looked down in his hands. "Oh right. Maria you left in such a hurry you forgot your purse. I was just about to have Liz run it over to your house."
"Oh, thanks Mr. P. It's ok, next time it happens I'll end up coming back anyways. You know how forgetful I am."
"Ah well, you just make sure that you don't forget it ok? The last thing Roswell needs is Maria DeLuca in jail for not having her driver's liscense. Your mother would throw a fit." Maria laughed. "Wouldn't she though?" Before Mr. Parker could reply the door's jingled and everyone turned towards the new arrival. It was Sheriff Valenti. He pulled his glasses off to reveal red eyes. He spotted Jeff and started to walk over.
"I'll see you at work tomorrow?" Mr. Parker asked Maria, looking towards her. She nodded and he greeted Sheriff Valenti with a hug. The two then went into the back room.
"Maria, who was that?" Tess asked curiously.
"Mr. P? He owns this restaurant...I told you guys about him, member?"
"No, not him, the other guy he hugged." Tess corrected. She turned her blue eyes to meet Maria's green ones.
"Sheriff Valenti. He's the Roswell Sheriff."
"Valenti...Kyle Valenti?" Isabel asked, remembering Maria's constant talking of Kyle, Alex, and Liz.
"Ya, Kyle's...was his son."
"Was?" Max questioned. Maria looked out the window and rested her chin on her hand. Tears sprang into her eyes. "I'll be right back, I just have to go to the bathroom really quick." Maria quickly got up and rushed towards the restroom, brushing past Courtney with the others food.
"What's with Maria?" She asked the group, setting down the plates.
"Kyle was mentioned and she got up and left." Michael said, shrugging. "Is he like her ex boyfriend or something?"
"Kyle Valenti and Maria DeLuca? Nope. That would never happen." Courtney, said laughing.
"Why not?" Tess asked, sipping her cherry coke.
"Because Kyle was going out with Liz, Maria's all time best friend. And Maria had a tiny crush on Liz's brother Alex anyways."
"So why is she so upset?" Max wondered. Courtney looked towards the bathroom as if she expected Maria to come out.
"A couple weeks ago, on Liz's birthday the four had planned to go to Slide Rock. Maria ended up having to stay home because her mom made her or something. Liz, Alex, and Kyle were driving late at night I guess, and Alex was at the wheel. Kyle and Alex were both majorly drunk and they crashed. Kyle and Alex were killed and Liz was the only survivor."
"Wow...Maria never mentioned it." Isabel said, looking over towards where Maria had run off. The door opened and Maria walked out. Courtney smiled at the others and walked off, past Maria. Maria sat down and the other silently stared at her.
"She told you didn't she?" Maria asked quietly.
"Ya. I'm sorry Maria." Tess replied. She quickly put a hand on top of Maria's.
"It's ok."
"We knew someone in Nevada who drove drunk-" Isabel started. Maria laughed and shook her head.
"Alex and Kyle never drank. Kyle's mom died from a car accident, in which she was hit by a drunk driver. No way would Kyle drink or let Alex drink and drive." Maria replied. Tess squeezed Maria's hand gently. "So where is Liz? Would she like to join us?"
"That's thoughtful, but Liz is mad at me." Maria said, looking at the untouched food.
"What? Why?" Michael asked. Maria shrugged. "I think she blames me for this whole mess. I don't really blame her at all. I blame myself too."
"Maria you were with us that night, there was no way you were to blame." Max said, trying to help Maria realize it wasn't her fault.
"I got a message on my answering machine from Liz, wondering where I was...if I was taking a shower...when I heard it I felt so awful. Maybe if I had been there, Alex and Kyle would be ok."
"So you blame yourself?" Michael asked. Maria nodded. "I don't know..."
"Ya well stop. Because blaming yourself will get you no where and Liz will realize it isn't your fault. Now help me eat some of this salad, it's pretty big." Isabel commanded. Maria smiled lightly and picked up a spare fork as the two started to eat the salad.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"So Maria blames herself too?" Ashley asked, looking at Lynn. Lynn nodded. "Well, why?"
"Because if Maria had been at home, she would have answered the phone, got in the car, picked the three up and everyone would have been fine." Alex answered. C.C. nodded. "The story's longer though."
"By all means, continue." Josh said. Lynn sat down across from him and pushed her hair behind her ears.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"I should get going." Maria said, smiling at the others as they walked outside.
"Let us take you home." Michael said, quickly, hiding a blush at Tess's smile. "We insist."
"Well..." Maria mumbled, looking at the jeep.
"Plus, we have no idea where our houses are." Isabel said. Max nodded and held the door open for Maria who hopped in.
"What's the address?" she asked, sitting between Tess and Isabel in the back.
"Of who's house?" Max twisted around and smiled at her. "We got busted for drinking and our parents decided moving to Roswell, a quiet town, would do us some good. They managed to get houses on the same street."
"Now if you were moving to L.A. I wouldn't believe you, but seeing as how we're in Roswell and the population is 1,000, I believe you. So what street again?"
"Congress right?" Tess asked, looking over at her brother. Maria whistled. "Where they have those nice Victorian houses? Wow, you guys must be rich."
"We're not. We're flat broke. Our parents on the other hand...let's just say that money grows on trees for them." Isabel smirked. Maria told Max to make a left, go straight for 2 stoplights and make a right.
"That's lucky. What do your parents do?" Maria asked, leaning back against the seat.
"Well, my Mom, is Aunt Sidney's sister. She's been a photographer since I can remember, and she's pretty good with a camera. Daddy's a computer freak. He loves that stuff. He's going to be the new Bill Gates...I'm telling ya." Isabel smiled. Tess rolled her eyes and laughed.
"Mom, is into the computer stuff too. She hangs with Uncle David alot and they have their own business. But Dad's well-" Tess looked at Michael for support.
"Dad used to be a big sport guy. He coached a team in Arizona before we moved to Nevada and he retired. The retirement plan makes sure we'll be ok for a long time." Michael finished.
"And your parents Max?" Maria asked, looking over at him.
"They're lawyers. Good ones but not exactly the most entertaining job." Max replied.
"You guys have a stroke of luckiness in your family." Maria replied, shaking her head.
"What's your mom and dad do?" Tess asked, turned towards Maria.
"My dad? I don't know my dad. He left my mom before I was born. Asshole if you ask me. My mom owns a little alien tourist shop. She makes pies for the Crashdown, and does deliveries every now and then for customers who can't travel very far." Maria shrugged. "But as soon as I graduate I'm getting the hell outta this town."
"Why?" Michael asked, looking into Maria's eyes.
"Because there's just gotta be something better for me out there than Roswell, New Mexico."
"I'm sorry about your dad Maria." Tess replied. Maria shrugged. "Not your fault. It doesn't even matter to me. He's missing out on moi."
"Ok, now which house is it is the question?" Max asked, turning right on Congress. Maria's eyes grew big. "I don't care. Pick one and we'll explore it." She said making the others laugh.
"Or, we could try the house with the 'Movin' In Style' van." Isabel replied, popping in another piece of gum. When the jeep stopped Janey, Sidney, and Diane waved at the 5.
"How'd you find the house?" Diane asked, after they got out of the car.
"Our good friend Maria here is a true Roswellian. She helped us out." Isabel said, swinging her arm over Maria's shoulders. Sidney smiled. "Maria?" She asked, shaking Maria's hand. She lifted an eyebrow at her son, who started to shift his weight. Maria nodded and shook Janey and Diane's hands as well.
"You must stay for dinner than some time." Sidney replied. Tess nudged Isabel. Isabel looked at her and than smiled.
"You know Mom, I could use some help in my room tonight. I really want to get it set up just right."
"Me too, I could help Isabel out and then she and Maria could help me out...maybe spend the night?" Tess pleaded. Sidney raised her eyebrows at Janey.
"Michael, sweetie, it's your house too, what do you think?" Sidney asked her son.
"I think I'm spending the night at Maxwell's." he replied, causing the others to laugh.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"Wait, let me get this straight. Maria's friend and crush...ex crush...whatever, died a couple weeks earlier and now she's running to be best friends with new people? That doesn't sound right." Brianna stated. Xan frowned. "What would you be doing if your last friend stopped talking to you?"
"Bawl my eyes out, not have a slumber party." Brianna retorted. Xan rolled his eyes. "Girl."
"What else would I be?" she snapped.
"Guys..." Jeremy broke in. The two looked away from each other.
~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~
"Lizzie, what's wrong?"
"I don't know Alex...I just. I want to make up with Maria but I know I wasn't in the wrong." Liz sighed, angry.
"Why did you two fight anyways?" Kyle asked, curiously.
"Well, she told me that Frankie...the 11th grader, asked her to a party. She was really excited and all but I told her she shouldn't go because guys like Frankie, don't ask Freshman girls to go to parties like that to just dance. She said that I was just jealous and words were thrown around. I'm sorry that she's mad at me, but I'm not sorry for what I said. Frankie's a jerk, and I know I'm right!" Liz said, steam practically coming out of her ears. Alex stopped strumming on his guitar.
"Maybe, you should tell Maria that." he suggested. Liz sighed. "No, it'll do no good. She won't listen."
"You two are best friends." Kyle reminded her, holding her in her arms.
"Maybe not anymore." Liz replied sadly.
"You said that in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Liz." Alex laughed. Liz looked at him and started to laugh too. "I guess you're right."
"Next year you two will fight and make up, guarenteed!" Kyle shouted after Liz as she climbed back through her window. "Whatever Plato!"
"Who the heck is Plato?" Kyle asked Alex, causing his buddy to laugh.
"Dude, don't even try to understand my sister."
"Noted."

"Noted."
