Summary: Because Max wasn’t there that day of the shooting at the Crashdown Liz was shot. Instead of dying Liz is paralyzed from the waste down and confined to a wheelchair. With help from Max, Liz learns to feel, love and walk all over again

Authors Note: Well people, it looks like the end of a very long road. Thank you to everyone who stood by me for nearly a year to finish this fic. There were times I didn’t want to finish this fic but you awesome people gave me the inspiration. Thank you all. LOL, okay, sorry for the cheese factor, but I meant every word.

Part 20

Liz sat in the chair in front of Dr. Moore and began telling her rehearsed speech that she and Max had gone over a million times. Max was waiting in the waiting room for Liz to finish.

“I've been feeling some tingling in my legs lately…” Liz started off saying to the middle-aged doctor.

“Tingling?” Dr. Moore asked her.

Liz nodded. “Yea. Tingling.”

“How long have you felt the tingling?”

“For about a week now.” Liz told her.

“Why didn’t you call me?” Dr. Moore asked. “This is very important news.” She said to Liz, who feigned shock.

“Wh-What do you mean?” Liz asked.

“I mean that you may be able to walk again soon.”

Liz covered her mouth with her hands. “Oh my God…” she whispered. She felt the tears come to her eyes and gave herself a mental pat on the back for being so convincing. “Are you serious?”

Dr. Moore nodded and let herself smile slightly at the Liz’s obvious happiness. “Yes, I’m serious.”

Dr. Moore stood up from her seat and leaned over her desk. “Are your parents here?”

Liz nodded her head. “There in the waiting room with Max.”

“I’m going to go get them and bring them in here so we can discuss what’s happening and how to proceed from here.” The doctor said before leaving the room.

Once she was gone, Liz began to smile widely to herself. Her’s and Max’s plan was working.

As she sat there, she wondered what would happen next. How long it would actually take before she could actually walk again.

The thought made her giddy.

She wanted nothing more than be able to once again stand up on her own feet and dance with the love of her life in her arms.

Speaking of the love of her life…

Max walked in with the Parkers and the doctor and they all stood in her office, waiting for her big news.

Dr. Moore walked behind her desk and once again sat down before she began speaking. “Liz just informed me that she was feeling some tingling in her legs.” She said. Before she let anyone interrupt, she went on. “I’m not sure what this means, but I know that Liz might be able to walk again.”

She sat for a few minutes, letting the news sink in.

“Oh God Lizzie…” Nancy Parker said in a strangled whisper as her eyes filled up her tears. Fate had played a cruel game on her daughter and taken away her gift of walking and now they were giving it back. She reached over to from where she was sitting next to Liz and gave her a huge hug. “Why didn’t you tell us?” She asked Liz.

Liz began to get weepy, seeing her mother so emotional about it. “I didn’t want to get my hopes up mom.” She answered.

Jeff Parker was watching his two favorite women rejoice in the miracle and his own eyes began filling with tears. He didn’t care if his daughter could walk or not, but the happiness in both Liz’s and Nancy’s eyes made his heart burst. He reached over from his seat next to Nancy and engulfed them both in a family hug.

Max and Dr. Moore watched the scene with big smiles on their faces. When the hug broke apart Liz looked up at Max and smiled at him. Max smiled back and mouthed ‘I love you’ which Liz returned.

Jeff watched the exchange and wasn’t sure how to react. His daughter, his only daughter had whispered the telltale words of love to Max Evans. He remembered last night when he and his wife came home at 11:30 to see Max and Liz sleeping in each other’s arms in the living room. His wife had thought it was cute, but he…he was realizing that his little girl was no longer a little girl. Sure, she had dated Kyle earlier that summer, but this was different.

And that scared him.

He looked at Max Evans and silently hoped that he would not hurt Liz. Max was a nice guy and he didn’t want to have to kill him.

Jeff turned his head from Max and once again focused on what the doctor was saying.

“So, everything is going to be okay?” Maria asked Liz as she and Liz ate Ice cream on Liz’s bed. Alex was there too, but he decided that eating ice cream and with two girls at his age was un-manly and decided on drinking a Pepsi.

Liz nodded.

“And they didn’t suspect anything?” Alex asked her worriedly.

Liz shook her head. “Not a thing.” She answered.

“How long before you start walking again?” Alex continued.

Liz shrugged. “Well, we did a lot of tests today at the hospital and they estimated about this summer.”

Maria gave her one of her patented pixie smiles. “What’s the first thing you’re going to do?” she asked Liz.

Liz didn’t even have to think about it. “I’m going to dance with Max…” she responded quietly.

“Awe…” Maria couldn’t help but say. She thought Liz and Max were totally cute and Liz’s statement just made things dreamier.

Alex rolled his eyes at Maria and then smiled at Liz. “Well, I’m glad this is all working out for you.”

Liz smiled back at them. “Yea me too.”

“Liz! Can you please come out here for a second!” Liz’s mother called from the living room.

“Coming.” Liz shouted back. Alex stood up and helped Liz into her wheelchair that was sitting next to her bed.
Liz sat down in the chair and looked up at Alex. “In a while, you’ll never have to do this anymore.” She said before getting her self out of the room.

Alex and Maria watched her leave before turning to look at each other.

“Surprise party?”

“Of course.”

“Are you sure they didn’t suspect anything?” Michael asked Max as once again Isabel, Michael, and Max were in his room.

“For the last time, I’m sure.” Max responded, annoyance tinting his voice.

“You better be sure.” Isabel retorted.

Max glared at the both of them. “Are we done?” he asked.

Isabel let out a breath of air. “Look Max, we’re not trying to be mean or anything, we like Liz, really, but what you did was dangerous.” She told him. “You could of put us in a lot of danger.”

Michael nodded, agreeing with her. “I hope you were careful Max.” He ended for her.

Max looked at them, understanding where they were both coming from. “Trust me you guys, no one will find out. Okay?”

Michael and Isabel reluctantly nodded before Michael jumped out the window and Isabel left for her own room.

Later than night, Max picked up the phone and dialed her number, wanting to hear Liz’s voice.

“Hello?” Liz answered on the other line.

“Hey Liz.” Max responded.

“Hi Max.” Liz said while smiling to herself. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too.”

For the next twenty minutes they sat, talking with each other, just happy to hear each other’s voices on the other line before they had to get off because Max’s mom had called him to wash the dishes from the night’s dinner.

Part 21

The next five months flew by quickly.

Liz went to physical therapy twice a week to heal her nerves in her legs and Max accompanied her through the whole process.

* * * * *
Liz held her breath as she walked with the help of the bars. She didn’t want to admit it to anyone, but it hurt.

It hurt a lot.

“You okay Liz?” Max asked when he saw her pained Liz. He and Liz were alone in the room with all the equipment temporarily while the regular physical therapists went over some charts.

“I’m fine Max.” Liz responded, giving Max a small, pained smile.

Max raised his eyebrows and then looked worried. “What’s wrong?”

Liz shook her head and closed her eyes, trying to keep her tears in. She got to the edge of the rail and nearly let out of breath. She looked over at Max’s worried expression. “It hurts.” She reluctantly admitted.

“Do you want me to heal you a little more?” Max whispered to her.

Liz looked around and noticed they weren’t alone. Another person was in the room. “No Max. There are people here.” She said before turning around and walking the rail again. It hurt, but it would hurt more if Max got captured.

* * * * *

Jeff had gotten more comfortable around his daughter’s boyfriend. He didn’t want to admit to anyone, much less himself, that Max could possibly be the one. He saw love before. He saw it between him and Nancy everyday, and he began to see it in Max and Liz. The way Max and Liz were so comfortable with each other and the way they acted around each other was simply amazing.

Meanwhile, Maria and Alex were busily planning Liz’s surprise party. After some convincing they had managed to get Isabel and Michael in their plans.

* * * * *
“So what do you want us to do?” Michael asked as he, Maria, Alex and Isabel sat at a table in the quad on a sunny June afternoon, a week before school was let out and a week before the doctors estimated that she would be walking again.

Liz and Max were off eating by their selves somewhere on the other side of the quad.

“Okay Michael…I want you to by the refreshments.” She looked up from her sheets of notes and stared at Max. “Don’t overload on the spicy, ‘kay?” She didn’t give him a chance to respond as she went on to Isabel. “Isabel and I will be working on the decorations. She looked up at Isabel who smiled. “And Alex will be working on invitations.

“How are we going to keep things secret if we send out invitations? Liz is going to be bound to see one eventually?” Alex asked.

Maria thought for a moment. “I've got it.” She said. “Email.” She stated simply.

The three of them gave her a look. “Email?” Isabel asked.

“Yes, email. Who freakin doesn’t have email nowadays?” She asked. “No one.” She continued before letting anyone respond to her question.

“So Alex, your new job is to collect all of the guests email addresses and email them about the party.”

Alex nodded. “Where’s the guest list?”

Maria reached for a piece of paper in her bag. “Right here.” She said while handing it to Alex.

“What if Liz isn’t walking by next week?” Isabel asked them all. “I hate to mention it, but she’d be embarrassed to have a huge party and not even being able to walk.”

They all sat silently to ponder Isabel’s thoughts.

“I have faith that Liz will be walking in her party. And that’s what we need, right?” Maria responded, not really expecting an answer. She then gave them all a small glare. “I’m hoping you guys will do everything I've asked?” She asked them, daring them with her tone to tell her no.

Alex, Michael, and Isabel nodded.

Maria smiled brightly. “Great.” She said while clapping her hands together. “I can’t wait for the party. Lizzie is going to be so surprised.”

* * * * *

Exactly a week later Maria, Alex, Michael, Isabel, and the guests of the party including Kyle, his new girlfriend of the week, and various classmates of the sophomore, no junior class sat silently in the shaded and dark Crashdown waiting for Liz to arrive from the physical therapy.

It was 5:00 in the afternoon, early for a party full of teenagers, but they wanted to surprise Liz as soon as she came back.

“So when are they supposed to be here?” Michael asked Maria, referring to Liz, Max, and Liz’s parents.

“In about ten minutes.” Maria answered distantly. Michael reached for her hand and noticed it was shaking terribly.

“Hey.” He said quietly. “You okay?”

Maria raised her head from the table, looking Michael in the eyes. “I’m just nervous.” She answered. “I didn’t want to think about it before, but what if Lizzie comes back and she isn’t walking?”

“Remembering what you said about faith?” Michael asked and Maria nodded. “I’m not usually this vocal about what I’m feeling but I have faith that Liz will walk in the Crashdown.”

Just then, the sound of a car pulling up in the back and doors slamming quieted down the faint murmurings of the Crashdown.

Maria took in a deep breath. This was it, the moment of truth.

The door silently opened and in walked Jeff and Nancy and then Max pushing Liz in the wheelchair. They all looked in surprise at the crowd in front of them.

“Surprise!” the crowed cried rather quietly.

Liz wasn’t walking after all. Maria choked back a sob.

What happened next surprised the crowd to silence.

Liz slowly picked her self up from her chair and began walking towards Maria and Alex.

“Oh my God!” Maria exclaimed as she and Alex met Liz half way. The three musketeers hugged each other breathless as the crowd watched and eventually started cheering.

“I’m so happy for you Liz.” Alex said as he hugged his two best girl friends.

“Me too Lizzie.” Maria added in her tear-choked voice.

Liz nodded her head, unable to respond and just continued to give her best friends a hug.

* * * * *

The party went on without a hitch. Everyone had a great time, dancing and congratulating Liz.

Everyone had a great time except for Max and Liz. Every time they would try and talk to each other Liz got intercepted by some one from school talking to her.

As much as she was grateful the party, the only thing she wanted to do was have that dance with Max. She had rejected every other offer to dance from the guys at the party and her friends.

By the end of the night, Max and Liz hadn’t had their dance yet and the party was slowly dwindling down.

As the guests left they each gave Liz a hug. Soon, the only people left were her, Max, Isabel, Michael, Maria, and Alex.

“I hope you had fun Liz.” Maria said as they all sat down in a booth.

Liz smiled brightly for Maria and the others, not wanting to make them feel bad. “I had a great time Maria. Thank you for planning this.” She turned towards Max. “Did you know anything about this?”

Max shook his head. “Not a thing.” He responded.

“We were going to tell you Max, but we figured you would tell Liz the second you saw her.” Isabel joked with him.

Max smiled sheepishly. He wasn’t going to deny it. He would of told Liz. He couldn’t hide anything from her.

They laughed and talked about anything from what they were going to be doing during the summer and how happy that they were finally juniors.

“Only two more years of high school.” Alex said. “Thank God.” He continued as they laughed at his comment.

An hour later at about 10pm, the gang had swindled out one by one starting with Isabel, then Michael, then Alex, and finally Maria.

Liz rested her head on Max’s shoulder. “I love you Max.”

Max kissed the top of her head before answering. “I love you too Liz.”

Authors Note: The song used here is “Brown Eyes” by Destiny’s Child.

“Hey kids!” Jeff Parker called while walking towards Max and Liz, “We’re going to start cleaning up now. Why don’t you guys go upstairs to the living room and watch TV.”

“No daddy.” Liz protested. “We’ll clean up and why don’t you and mom go upstairs and watch TV,” She told him.

“Yea Mr. Parker.” Max chimed in. “We can clean up.”

“You kids sure about that?” Jeff asked.

Max and Liz nodded and Jeff reluctantly went retired upstairs with his wife.

Instead of cleaning immediately, Liz walked over to the radio and turned it on. One of her favorite songs came on and she smiled before turning to Max who looked at her questionably.

Remember the first day when I saw your face, remember the first day when you smiled at me, you stepped to me and you said to me, I was the woman you dreamed about…

“Max, the one thing I wanted to do tonight, was have my first dance with you.” She explained to him.

Max smiled, understanding. “I didn’t dance with anyone either tonight.”

Remember the first day when you called my house, remember the first day when you took me out, we had butterflies although we tried to hide, and we both had a beautiful night…

They walked closer to each other and fell in each other’s arms as they began to sway to the music.

The way we held each others hand, the way we talked the way we laughed, it felt so good to find true love, I knew right then and there you were the one

Liz sighed against his shoulder as they moved together in beat.

I know that he loves me cause he told me so
I know that he loves me cause his feelings show
when he stares at me you know that he cares for me
you see how he is so deep in love
I know that he loves me cause its obvious
I know that he loves me cause it's me he trusts
and he's missing me if he's not kissing me
and when he looks at me his brown eyes tells his soul

Max waved his hands in the air and the room got dimmer and flowers began falling from the ceiling.

Remember the first day, the first day we kissed
remember the first day we had an argument
we apologized and then we compromised
and we haven't argued since
remember the first day we stopped playing games
remember the first day you fell in love with me
it felt so good for you to say those words
cause I felt the same way too

The way we held each others hand
the way we talked the way we laughed
it felt so good to fall in love
and I knew right then and there you were the one

Liz looked up at the ceiling and let out a smile as she faced Max. “That’s beautiful Max.” She whispered.

“Not as beautiful as you.” He whispered to her as he leaned down and kissed her.

I'm so happy so happy that you're in my life
and baby now that you're a part of me
you showed me
showed me the meaning of true love
and I know he loves me

I know that he loves me cause he told me so
I know that he loves me cause his feelings show
when he stares at me you know that he cares for me
you see how he is so deep in love
I know that he loves me cause its obvious
I know that he loves me cause it's me he trusts
and he's missing me if he's not kissing me
and when he looks at me his brown eyes tells his soul

When the kiss broke apart Max and Liz smiled at each other and whispered their love. Liz rested her head on Max’s shoulder where she was before.

She was finally where she needed to be. She was living, she was loving, and she was finally breathing again.

He looks at me and his brown eyes tell his soul...

The End.

As for a sequal, sorry, but nope, I don't plan on writing one. It took me nearly a year to finish this one, I think it'd take twice as long to finish a sequel, LOL. I also am writing a story called "All You Wanted" which is a AU M/L fic and is based on the song "All You Wanted" by Michelle Branch. I only have the Prologue and Part 1 done and I want to write more before posting.

This was a great story and I'll be looking forward to you new one.

Have you ever thought of continuing your story A Journey To Be Taken? It was good, had a great premise and should be finished.

Wow, you remeber that fic...yea, I want to finish that one, but I hit a block. A six months block. I'm up to part 3 of 15 of All You Wanted, and after I finish that one, I'll see what I can do with A Journey To Be Taken.

Oh, and I have parts 1-8 of My Buffy/Roswell X-Over fic Distorted Mirrors at the Boardello of Fanfiction.
