“Cynthia, could get me the Langley file from Mr. Evans office. The case is scheduled to end tomorrow and I want to make sure that I don’t miss a thing.” Liz asked through the intercom. “Sure thing Liz.” Cynthia answered. Through Liz’s glass office door, she saw Tess talking to the office receptionist. Obviously looking for Max. That tramp has been a pain my ass for the pass 3 and a half weeks. Every morning when she and Max would enter the building, we would pass Tess’s real estate office. She would stick her head out of her office to speak to Max, never acknowledging that Max was walking with Liz. Liz kept cool, because she did not want to jeopardize their careers or their relationship. Well, Tess, if it’s a battle that you want, you got one! “Cynthia, that’s okay, I will get the file myself. Thanks anyway.” Liz said and made a dash toward Max’s office.
As Liz approached Max’s office, she heard the two of them talking. “Max, it seems that you have been avoiding me. You don’t even go to the coffee shop where we met anymore. I thought that we had something going?” Tess said as she walked toward Max until she was inches apart from him. Max took two steps away from her. How pathetic! She is practically throwing herself at me! Max thought with disgust. “Tess, you are a nice person, but I never promised you anything. We didn’t even kiss goodnight. I made it perfectly clear that were going to be friends, nothing more. If I mislead you in anyway, I apologize.” Max explained. “But Max.....” Before Tess could finish her sentence, Liz walked into the office. “Good morning Max. I need the Langley file so that I could prepare for closing tomorrow.” Liz said walking past Tess to Max. “Excuse me! We were talking here. Max, you need to control you assistant a bit better than this. She is downright rude.” Tess hissed. Liz turned around and shot Tess a look that could kill. Max put his head into his hands. Max knew Liz long enough to know that her response will not be pretty. I almost feel sorry for Tess, he thought. “Tess, right? Well, Tess, First of all I am not a secretary, I am a junior partner in this firm. The title and responsibilities as Max. So before you decide to insult someone, make sure that you get your facts straight. Are you a new client?” Liz asked in a calm, even tone. “Not that it is any of your business, this is a personal visit.” Tess said. “Personal huh? Let me give you some personal advice. If you are looking for customers, try the corner on 108th street. I am sure that you will be able to pick up a lot of tricks there.” Liz said with a smile. Tess jaw dropped. So did Max. “How dare you! I am not a hooker!” Tess exclaimed. “Really! If you’re not, you might want to rethink your wardrobe. It’s hard to tell the difference when you come to work wearing outfits that leaves nothing to the imagination. Geez, I want to slip a dollar in your waistband right now.” Liz paused. “Is that how you land your clients?” Max covered his mouth to keep from laughing. Tess opened her mouth to speak, but Liz stepped closed to Tess until they were face to face. “For the past few weeks, I have put up with your dirty looks, I even put what you did to me college behind me. Bottom line, you are on my turf now tramp... I mean Tess. If you ever disrespect me again, I will make your life hell. Trust me, I can do it without even breaking the law.” Liz stared into Tess’s eyes, making sure she understood that what she said was not a threat, but a promise. Tess noticed it too because she clenched her jaw in defeat and looked at Max. “I will contact you later.” Tess said as she walked out of the office. Liz turned to face Max, the expression on his face was priceless. “I expected the confrontation, not a bloodbath!.” Max said with a chuckle. “Serves her right for messing with my man.” Liz walked over to Max to give him a kiss. Just as they were about to touch, the phone rang. “Evans.” Max answered. “Yes she is. Right away sir.” Max hung up the phone. “It’s Middleton. He want us to meet him in his office in five minutes.” “Did he saw what for?” Max shook his head no.
Max and Liz walked into Middleton’s office to find his partner Towson with him. They both greeted the senior partner and sat on Middleton’s sofa. “I know you both are wondering why I called you here. So I will get right to the point. Towson decided to retire.” Liz and Max were stunned. Middleton continued. “We both considered the candidates for Towson’s replacement. and we both agreed that it should be you Max.” Max stared in disbelief. “I am honored, but what made you decide to retire so early Mr. Towson?” Max asked. “Max, I have been a lawyer for 36 years. I am tired. My family is tired. I want to spend time with my grandchildren while I can. I don’t want to make the same mistake with my grandchildren that I made with my children. Long hours at the office trying to be successful. Meanwhile, my family turned into total strangers. James and I thought hard about this. Kevin Healy and Thomas McKinney were also in the running. All three of you have the experience, but you Max, you have what it takes to be a leader.” Towson said. “Why do I feel a but coming on.” Max asked suspiciously. “Middleton took a deep breath to answer his question. “This offer in contingent on whether you take this next case. It is a high profile case. New client, some hot shot executive who want out on his four year marriage because his wife was unfaithful. They have one daughter together, three years old. They both signed a prenuptial agreement, stating that she deserves alimony and child support. It’s a typical case of older man, younger woman, except that this guy is worth millions to the firm.” Middleton turned to Liz. “That’s is where you come in Liz. We would like you to second chair. You two work well together and the firm has been really impressed with you work since you started. I must warn you, it will be highly publicized. The media will be hounding you quite often. Can you handle it?” Middleton asked. “Yes after all, this case will do wonders for my career. When do we meet the client?” Towson glanced at his watch. “He should be here by now. He is running a little late.” Just then, the door opened an a tall, older, gray-haired, well built man walked through the door. Max looked as if he saw a ghost. Max stood up and turned to his superiors. “I am sorry, but I cannot take the case. Please understand.” Max walked past the man and out of the office. “What in the hell was that about?” Middleton exclaimed. Liz stood up to answer. “Gentlemen, allow me to introduce Phillip Evans, Max’s father.”
I will try to post more tonight, it will be good trust me. It is the chapter that everyone has been waiting for. Question, do anyone know how to update my thread without using a different thread. I do not know how. Help! Thanks for the feedback

Liz spent the afternoon with Jasmine after she pick her up from daycare, the went to the park and ate dinner at home while watching cartoons. Since there is no school tomorrow, it was girl’s night out. Although she was having fun with her daughter, she could not stop thinking about Max. Liz checked her living room clock. It was eight-thirty at night and he still hasn’t called. She called his home, his cell, and his office phone. No answer. She picked up the phone and called her only person who would know where he was. “Maria, it’s Liz. Is Michael there?” “Yeah, Liz. He just came home. Is this about Max?” “Yeah. He found out today that his father is our new client and his ticket to senior partner. I seen or spoke with him since this afternoon and now I am getting worried.” “Hold on Liz. I will as Michael.” Liz heard Maria talk to Michael in the background. “Liz, Michael says that he should be home. They went to the bar to talk for awhile, but he dropped him off at his house about an hour ago.” “Thank Maria. Could you do me a favor? Could you watch Jasmine for an hour so that I could talk to Max alone?” Liz asked. “It is no problem. Send that little whipper snapper over here.” “Thanks Maria. I owe you one.”
Liz walked up to Max’s house and knocked on the front door. No answer. She glanced inside through the window to find it dark. Liz looked under the doormat to find Max’s spare key. She unlocked the door and walked in. “Max.” she shouted. Liz walked into his den to find Max sitting in a chair in the dark with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a shot glass in another. Liz turned the light on. “This is a new look for you. The self-pity look. It really becomes you.” Liz said sarcastically. “Don’t start with me Liz. Not now.” “Max please don’t do this to yourself. It has been long enough. You have to either face him or let this anger go before it eats away at you.” Liz pleaded. “Don’t lecture me about me and my father. You don’t know anything about what I went through.” Max took the bottle to his lips and took a big gulp. His made a face as the fiery liquid went down his throat. “Don’t you dare tell me I don’t know what you went through. I was there remember? I was there when you went through the hurt and the pain of your parents divorce. I know what you went through because I felt it too. Max, you have to deal with this or else.” Liz warned. “Or else what.” Max challenged as he stood up from his chair staggering. “Or else you will be nothing but a scared little boy running away from his problems.” Liz, hurt to see him in his drunken condition, turned around to walk away. “I believe the defense has a right to speak.” Liz stopped and turned around to face him. “Go ahead.” Max slowly paced back and forth of his den, as if he was in a courtroom. “You sure talk big about facing demons and not running away. You should practice what you preach Ms. Parker.” Max said sternly. “You’re drunk. You don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Tonight I am drunk, tomorrow I will be sober, but you will always be a hypocrite.” Max accused. “I am going home before we say anything that we will regret.” “Wait a minute, I let you have your say, I am not allowed to have mine?” Max asked. “Look you son of a .....” Liz started to say, but Max would not let her finish her sentence. “Why did you run away from me when we slept together in college? I assumed it was a special night for you.” “I told you why Max. I did not want to ruin our friendship. I thought that we were moving too fast.” Liz responded wondering where this line of questioning was going. “One more question. Do you remember what Marcus looks like?” “What the hell does this have do with....” “Just answer the question!” Max asked. his voice raised slightly. “6”2 Blond hair, grey eyes.....” “Exactly. Have you ever notice that Jasmine never shared the same characteristics as Marcus. It is kind of odd don’t you think. She has brown hair, brown eyes. She doesn’t have his nose, ears, mouth or personality. Why is that exactly.” Liz turned ghost white. Her worst fear has come true. Tears formed in her eyes. When she opened her mouth to speak, Max held her hand up. “Before you deny it, I already know. I have known since you were pregnant." Liz confused, so Max continuted. "I saw the sonogram that you took when you were pregnant. I remember that you went through a lot of trouble to keep me from seeing it. I pretended to look in your room for a college textbook for school, instead I went searching for the sonogram. I was worried that the child was deformed or something and that you didn’t want to worry me. Imagine how I felt when I found it. According to you, you were supposed to be 28 weeks when you have the sonogram taken. The sonogram stated that you were 24 weeks. You lied to me to my face for years.” Max said, tears falling down his cheeks. “I get it is my fault too. I knew and did not say anything. I thought that you were afraid of being pregnant and alone. I thought that if I showed you that I will stick by your side and never leave you, you will eventually tell me. You never did. Then I convinced myself that I will do anything to be in her life, even if it mean being her uncle. Just tell me why?” Max asked, tear and anger that he held in for so long came bursting through. “I can’t deny it Max. Jasmine is your daughter. That night that we spent together was like magic. I never thought that I would fall in love with you in one night, but I did. I think that I loved you all along. I thought that by not telling you that I was doing what is best for you. Allowing you to pursue your life, your career, your dream of becoming a lawyer.” Liz explained, tears streaming down her cheeks. “Don’t you dare presume to know what is best for me. Have you ever thought that being your husband and the father of your children was my one and only dream. And what about Jasmine? How long were you going to keep this from her, until high school graduation? When you kept this secret, you not only hurt me, you hurt your own daughter as well. You cheated me out of the one thing that I would have wanted more than money, fame or success. A chance for my daughter to call me Dad.” Max words cut her like a knife. “I need to ask you to leave now. Please.” Max begged. Liz wanted to convince him to push her way, but she knew deep down that he needed time. “I love you.” Liz whispered. Max did not respond, he turned and walked toward the bar in the den, not facing her. Reluctantly, she turned and walked out of the door.

The drive to Michael and Maria’s house seemed to take forever. For as long as she lived, she will never forget the look of anger and disappointment in Max’s eyes. I’ve lost him she thought. A voice in her head screamed at her, “You deserve it. What do you think he was going to do when you told him? Did you think he was going to pick you up and spin you around and you would live happily ever after?” Finally she reached the house. Liz knocked on the door and Maria opened it. Looking at the pain and despair on Liz’s face, she knew what happened. “I’ve lost him Maria.” she sobbed hugging her friend.
Liz and Maria walked into the living room and sat on the sofa. “Where is Michael?” Liz asked. “He fell asleep watching the hockey game. Jasmine is in the guest room asleep. They both fell asleep at the same time. It was like taking care of two children” Maria said. It hurt Maria to see Liz in so much pain. “Go ahead, Maria. You say that I told you so.” “I would never do that. Seeing you in pain is the last thing that I wanted. I will say though, if you love him the way I think that you do, don’t give up on him. He loves you just as much as you love and don’t forget that you created a beautiful daughter together. Some things are worth fighting for. Take me for example, Michael is a wonderful husband, but do you think that he came in a box like that? No way, Jose. I had to beat and pound him in submission. It was like fighting a war believe me. In the end, it was worth it. You have to ask yourself , is he worth it? It also means giving Max a little space to work things through.” Liz sat there and let what Maria said to her sink in. “If you want, you could leave Jasmine her tonight and pick her up tomorrow morning. Michael’s art exhibit is tomorrow so I won’t be going to the office tomorrow.” “Oh, I totally forgot about that.” Liz said putting her hand over her mouth. “That’s okay. I am sure that Michael will understand.” “Thanks for the offer, but do you mind if I stay here tonight? I don’t want to wake Jasmine and I don’t want to go home alone either.” “Of course I don’t mind. Don’t worry, everything will be okay. Alright?” Maria gave Liz another hug. Liz wanted to believe her, but right now she felt that Max would never forgive her for breaking his heart. Liz broke away for Maria’s embrace and walked upstairs toward the guest room where Jasmine was sleeping.
Liz slowly open the bedroom door, careful not to wake her. Liz walked over to the bed where Jasmine was sleeping and carefully sat down on the bed. Jasmine looked like an angel in her sleep. Liz thought as she started to stroke Jasmine brown hair. Jasmine started to stir. “Is that you Mom?” Jasmine said with a sleepy voice. “Yes sweetheart, it’s me.” Jasmine noticed the sad look on her face, raised to a sitting position. “Mom, What’s the matter? Why are you sad?” Jasmine said fully awake now. “Jasmine, You know the number one rule: you have to always tell you to tell the truth no matter how bad it is. It seems that mommy was not following the rules .” Jasmine looked confused Liz took a deep breath and continued. “Remember when you asked about your daddy and I told you that one day I will tell everything.” Jasmine shook her head. “Yeah, I remember. You said that my daddy is a good person and one day I will see him.” “Well, I think that it is time that you get to know your dad. I know where your dad is. I am sorry that I did not tell you before.” “Where is he? Who is he? What is his name?” Jasmine questioned dying to know the answer. “Uncle Max is your daddy Jasmine.” Jasmine threw her hands up and rolled her eyes in the back of her head. “I know that Mom.” Jasmine said. Liz looked at her daughter in disbelief. “How did you know that?” Liz asked hoping that she did not overhear her and Maria discussing this. I would hate for her to find out that way. she thought to herself. “Do you remember Jennifer in my class? You know, the girl with the blond curls? When the daddy’s came to the school for the Father’s day muffins, she asked, “Where is your daddy?” and I said to her, “What’s a daddy?” and she said, “A daddy is a big guy who come to school and eats the muffins and takes you places and buys you presents and say I love you all the time.” Uncle Max came to school with me for Father‘s day, he buys me presents and he always say “I love you”. He does everything a daddy does, so I decided to make him my daddy. Tears formed in Liz’s eyes when she was talking about the time Max went with Jasmine to the Father’s day breakfast at her school. She let out a sigh of relief when she realized that she know the truth. “You are so smart for a five year old.” “Five and a half.” Jasmine corrected. “I’m sorry. Five and a half.” Liz held Jasmine’s hand. “Uncle Max is your real daddy. The daddy that I was talking about was Max. He is not your uncle, he is your daddy.” Judging by the surprised look on Jasmine’s face, she understood what her mom was saying. “Why did you say he was my uncle?” Liz opened her mouth to answer her question, but decided not to feed her the same excuses that she told herself all of these years. “Because I was afraid. Sometimes when people are afraid, they do crazy things. It is no excuse for lying to you. I...I don’t know what else to say except that I am sorry.” There was silence in the room for about 15 seconds. Liz watched her daughter register all of the information that she was giving her. She worried that she was too young to understand all of this. Liz prayed silently to herself, hoping that Jasmine would forgive her for this. “Does he know about me?” Jasmine asked, breaking the silence. “Yes, he know. He is a little sad that I didn’t tell him the truth, but he is happy that he is your dad.” Jasmine fell quiet once again, the a smile slowly formed on her face. “What are you thinking about?” Liz asked curiously. “It will be neat to be able to have a daddy like the other kids in my class. Can I call him daddy now?” Liz asked with enthusiasm. “I’m sure he would like that a lot.” “Yay, I have a daddy now.” Jasmine sang as she jumped into Liz’s arms. Liz held her daughter tight, silently thanking God for this precious gift that she was holding. “Hey, do you mind if I slept with you?” “Sure. Do you want me to read you a bedtime story? That always helps me when I can’t sleep.” “Okay.” Liz chuckled. Jasmine jumped off of the bed, grabbed a children’s book, and jumped back into bed. Jasmine and Liz got under the covers. Jasmine opened the book and began with the story. “Once upon a time, there was a little princess.......” Liz listened as she read the story to her. The story wasn’t about a princess, but Liz did not mind at all. As she held Jasmine while she was telling her the story she thought about what Maria said and made a decision. He is worth fighting for. Whatever it takes, we will be a family. she vowed to herself. Liz focused her attention back to daughter and for the first time since the argument with Max, she was hopeful.
Thanks for the incredible feedback. I will hopefully post another chapter this week. See ya for now.

“This is going to be a long day.” Liz said to herself as she drove to the office. This weekend was very long and dragged out for her. It would have been worse if Jasmine wasn’t there to keep her mind off of Max. On top of that Middleton called her on her cell to inform her that he may have to put Kevin Healy on the case if he doesn’t hear from Max this morning. “I have arranged to have Phillip meet you at your office at 9 am sharp to give you information about the case. You are to interview the witnesses and prepare them for cross examination. “I know that! Jesus, You are talking to me as if I don’t know my job.” she wanted to say but instead she kept her thoughts to herself. What is wrong with you Liz! It is just stress. Just take a deep breath and relax. Boy, this is going to be a long day!
“It is nice to see you again Mr. Evans.” Liz said as she extended her hand. “Please have a seat.” Liz barely made it to the office before Phillip Evans showed up. “Please call me Phillip.” Phillip glanced around Liz’s office before taking a seat. “I assumed Max will be at the meeting also.” Phillip asked. Liz, not knowing what to say, stumbled with her words. “I assumed that if Max decides to take the case, he will be here shortly. Technically, you and I are supposed to meet so that I could get the information about your case. Now, do you have any witnesses who will speak on your behalf?” Phillip reached into his briefcase and pulled out his list. “Liz, is there something you are not telling me about Max?” Phillip asked. Just as Liz was about to answer, Max walked into her office. “Sorry I’m late Ms. Parker. Traffic, you know how goes.” Phillip stood up to face Max. “I am pleased that you decided to come aboard son.” Phillip said with a smile. Max looked at his father as if he was the devil himself. “First of all, I am your lawyer and if you want it to continue to be so, you will keep our meetings strictly professional. The minute you speak about our relationship outside of this case, I will walk out and you can find yourself another lawyer. Understood?” Max did not wait for Phillip to answer, he turned to Liz. “I will be back to go over the information that you have so far.” “That will be fine.” was all that Liz could say. she was still recovering from the shock of seeing him again. “Okay, I will see you in a few.” Max said and walked out toward his office. Phillip sat back down into his chair with a disappointed look on his face. “Well, that didn’t work out the way I planned.” Liz saw red. “Really, how did you expect him to react Phillip. Did you expect him to run to you, forgive you just like that? You had an affair with another woman, you left his mother. And on top of that, you haven’t spoken to him in five years.” Liz said trying not to raise her voice. “Look, I didn’t know what to expect actually. I hope that since he was an adult that he would be more receptive. I thought that man to man, we would be able to talk about this.” Phillip answered. “This is real life, Mr. Evans, not the movies. so don’t expect a warm and fuzzy ending.” I have to get out of here before I deck this guy. Liz thought. “Now if you could excuse me, I will be back to get more information.” Liz walked out of her office toward Max’s.
“Knock. Knock.” Liz said as she stood at the threshold of his office. Max looked up from his desk. “Liz, please come in and close the door.” Liz reluctantly closed the door. She wanted a chance to talk to him, but at the same time, she was afraid that he would push her away even more. “I would like to apologize for my behavior the other night. Don’t get me wrong, I meant what I said, but I never meant to yell and call you names. You didn’t deserve that.” Liz stared at Max in disbelief. Max, there is no need to apologize. It is I who needs to apologize. I should have told you about Jasmine long ago.” Liz took a couple a steps closer to Max. “Can I ask you something Max. Is it too late for us?” Liz said, not sure if she wanted to hear the answer. Max remained silent for a moment. “I don’t hate you Liz if that is what you are thinking. I am a little hurt and angry, but my feelings for you will never be hateful. I just need a little time to sort things out okay? Meanwhile, we have to remain as normal as possible. We don’t want Middleton breathing down our necks.” Max’s calm tone hid the pain that he felt. He wanted so badly to run to her, take her into his arms, and never let her go. I need time. I just need a little time. he thought. “Of course. I can understand that. Now, let’s get back to work. Our client is stewing in our office. Are you sure that you can do this? Liz asked.. “I will be fine. Thank you for your concern.” Max smiled. “I have to be concerned. I love you. While you are having your time to think things through, please remember that.” Liz said sweetly. Liz didn’t know where this honesty came from, but she did not regret it. She promised herself that she wasn’t going to hold it in any longer. “I promise that I will remember.” Max chuckled. Liz turned the knob to open the door. “Liz?” Liz turned around. “Yeah?” “I love you too.” “I know.” Liz said. They stood staring at each other for what it seemed like hours before that walked out of the office.
From the reception desk, Tess watched Max and Liz walk out of his office. There is something going on between the two of them. There is no way Liz would be that fierce to her unless she was protecting what belongs to her. But that is impossible. she thought. She remembered what the receptionist said to her when she casually asked her if Max and Liz were seeing each other. “Max and Liz? No way. I heard that they were friends since they were in school. Besides, if the old man found out, it would be their necks.” the receptionist said chewing on her gum. Well, Well, Well. I guess it looks like I found your weakness Liz. It looks like this is going to be a battle after all. Tess thought to herself. She walked out of the firm to set her plan in motion.

Liz walked into the courtroom confident. Now if only my body would feel the same way. Liz thought as she rubbed her temple. For the past week, Liz has interviewed everyone on the witness list, and it seemed like her hectic schedule has finally taken it’s toll. Liz walked up to the table where Max and Phillip sat. “Good morning.” Liz said as she pulled her papers out of her briefcase. “Are you okay Liz? You look tired.” “I’m fine. I was up late last night working, but I am okay.” Liz sat in her chair, preparing for today. Max saw the exhaustion on Liz’s face and felt like a heel. Deep down he knew that she was pushing herself too hard, but whenever he would ask her if she was okay, she would say that she was fine. “Liz, listen. I am pretty sure that I can handle today solo. Why don’t you go home and get some rest. I will let the judge know that you weren’t feeling well and you had to go home.” Max whispered in her ear. Liz stared at Max as if he had two heads. “Are you implying that I am incapable of doing my job? I have been busting my ass to get ready for this case. I did not spend day and night for the past week working so that on the first day of court I will be sitting home on my ass all day. On top of that, I am doing the closing. How am I supposed to do that efficiently if I don’t know what’s going on?” Liz whispered back angrily. Liz knew that Max was only trying to be helpful, but her pride wouldn’t let her be rational. “Liz, I don’t mean to get you upset. I am aware of your contribution to this case and I appreciate you for it. Look, I am telling you this not only as your friend, but as your colleague. Go home and rest. You are no good to me, Jasmine or the case if you are walking around like a zombie.” Liz took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Actually, going home and taking a little nap was starting to sound very appealing. “Okay, I’ll go. Just take good notes. Call me tonight and give me details.” Max smiled and nodded.
Liz drove back to the office to pick up the tickets to the circus that was in town. She promised Jasmine that she would take her and she had no intention of breaking that promise. Her plan was to pick her up from afterschool daycare, go to the circus and then to dinner. Liz got anxious thinking about her afternoon with Jasmine. Liz walked out of her office and Cynthia stopped her. “Liz, what are you doing here? I thought that you were in court today.” Cynthia said. “I was, but I wasn’t feeling well so I am taking the rest of the day off. Are there any messages for me?” Liz asked. “Only two. The first one was from Maria. She said that if you were in court too late, she would pick Jasmine up from daycare. Call her at her office to confirm. The second message was from Mr. Middleton. He wants to see you as soon as you come in the office. He said that it was urgent.” Cynthia said as she finished reading from the message pad. Liz sighed. I guess Maria is going to have to pick Jasmine up after all, but I don’t care what task he gives me, I am going to the circus. Liz thought, wishing she went straight home instead. “Thanks Cynthia, contact Mr. Middleton and inform him that I will be in his office shortly. I have to make a phone call.”
“Liz, come in and close the door.” Middleton said. “Good morning James. I know that I suppose to be at court today, but I wasn’t feeling well. Max is still in court.” Liz said wondering what this emergency meeting could be about. “Have a seat Liz.” Middleton said sternly. Liz sat down, feeling like she had just been sent to the principal’s office. This can’t be good. she thought. Relax Parker, keep your poker face and be prepared for anything. “I was hoping that I could get the two of you together, but I will talk to him later. I received a phone call from a woman who claimed to be a friend of yours. She claims to be concerned about your capabilities of being a lawyer here at this firm, considering your intimate relationship with Max Evans. Is this true Liz? Are you and Max together?” She was prepared for everything but that. Who in the hell could have called? It couldn’t have been Maria. It only could have been someone who wanted this to happen. Only one person came to mind. Tess. Think Liz, figure a way out of this in a calm and casual manner. You may need a lawyer when I am finished with Tess, so I better not get on Middleton’s bad side. “Mr. Middleton, I am sure that you are well aware that Max and I were friends since college. Are you insinuating that colleagues cannot be friends in this firm?” Liz accused. If she was going down, she was not going down without a fight. Besides, his statement is pure speculation.
“Don’t pull the wool over my eyes Ms. Parker. I have asked around the firm. Although I did not get any direct answers, everyone, including myself, has noticed that you and Max were closer then you were when you started. Please don’t insult my intelligence any further by telling that you are not together.” Middleton’s voice slightly raised. The anger inside of Liz grew. “Mr. Middleton, I may be your employee, but I do not appreciate being treated like a child. The nature of our relationship should be nobody’s concern. Have we done anything to offend anyone? Max and I never shown any affection to each other in the office.” “Nevertheless, you broke the rule. It was a rule that was created long before you or Max and it will be here after you. Now I am sorry to have to say this, but I have made a decision. Either one of you, or both of you will have to resign.” Liz stared at Middleton in disbelief. “You are going to fire us just like that?” “If you put it that way, yes. I wanted to speak with the both of you together because I want a decision to be made by the end of business today.” Middleton said. Without thinking, Liz stood up from her chair. “You don’t have to wait until the end of business today. I will resign. Before the thought crosses your mind, I am not doing this for Max, I doing this for me. You see, I have a daughter and I don’t want to tell her that I work for someone like you. Now if you will excuse me, I have a desk to clean out.” Liz turned and walked out of the office before she said anything that she will regret.
Liz packed her belongings and said her goodbyes. The elevator took her down to the first floor. She stepped out and to her left was Tess’s office. I think I should say my goodbyes. Liz thought. she started toward Tess’s office.
Knock Knock. “Regina, I thought that I told you no interruptions.” Tess said abruptly. “I’m sorry Ms. Harding, but this woman.....” Liz pushed past the receptionist into the office. “Hello Tess. I would like a word with you.” “Get out of my office now!” Tess yelled standing to her feet. “Okay, I’ll leave, but tomorrow you will be served with a lawsuit indicating invasion of privacy. You know, the little phone call that you made to my boss.” Liz sat down on the office sofa. She knew that she had no case, but Tess didn’t know that. “Regina, that will be all. Leave and close the door.” Regina reluctantly closed the door. “I have to hand it to you Tess. That was a great move, calling my boss like that. Congratulations, it worked. I am out of the picture.” Liz clapped her hands together. A satisfied smile crept on Tess’s face. She quickly removed it thinking that Liz did not see the look on her face, but she did. “I am sorry to hear the news. I will definitely miss you.” Tess said sarcastically. Liz got up from the sofa and walked over to where Tess was standing. “Woman to woman, I know what you were doing. You thought that with me out of the way, you will have more time to spend with Max. It’s a good idea, but you forgot one minor detail.” Tess arched her eyebrow. “Oh, yeah. What’s that?” Liz stepped closer to her. “Where do you think he is going when he punches the timeclock? He is going to come to me that’s where he’s going.” Liz threw her head back and chuckled. “I remembered one night, after making love, we had a conversation about you. It was funny actually. He said that doesn’t like the sound of your voice, so touching you was out of the question. I know that you spend your days and night dreaming about him touching and kissing you in places that would send you to heaven. Well, I want you to think about this also, whatever you been dreaming about Max doing to you, he has already done to me. You will lucky if he looks in your direction.” Liz said smiling. “You stupid bitch! He is going to be mine! Now get out of my office!” Tess snapped. “I’ve said my peace, now I am going.” Liz turned to walk out of the office, but stopped in her tracks. “By the way.....” Liz swung her fist and connected with Tess’s jaw. Tess flew into the bookcase and onto the floor. “Don’t call me stupid.” Liz finished and walked out of the door.
Liz walked in the lobby feeling surprisingly confident. God, why am I seeing two of everyone? Liz thought. She stopped to regain her composure. May I just need to stand still. At that moment, Liz collapsed to the floor. She faintly saw a woman leaning over her, mouthing the words, “Are you alright?” before everything went black.

I can’t believe you didn’t tell me about the affair that you had with your wife’s best friend. That was an important piece of information that you should of shared, don’t you think? First Mom, now Theresa. Jesus, don’t you ever keep it in your pants!” Max said angrily. Court adjourned and Max and Phillip went to the conference room. Today did not end well at all. First, his wife Theresa, came across as the innocent, neglected young wife who was pushed into the arms of another man. Then to make matters worse, the Samantha, woman that Phillip had the affair with was a surprise witness.
“I didn’t think that she would show up today. The affair ended months ago and it lasted only a couple of weeks and she left town soon after. When she left, I thought that it would be the end of it.” Phillip sat in the conference room chair reenacting the events that just occurred only a few minutes ago. “You first problem is that you think too much. I do all the thinking, it’s what I get paid for. All I ask is that you give me all the information, good or bad, so that when I appear before a judge arguing that you deserve unlimited visitation for your daughter, I don’t look like an ass when surprise witnesses show up.” Max turned his back to him, rubbing his head. He turned around again to face him. “Let me ask you a question. How in the hell did you manage to successfully run a business the way you make decisions? Or is it that you treat strangers better than you treat the ones you claim to love.” Max was breaking his own rule, never discuss personal issues with him. It is just that hearing his wife talk about their short lived marriage made him realized that he was to blame, not her. All this time, Max blamed this woman for stealing his father away from his mother, it turns out that his father told Theresa that he was already separated from his wife, which was a lie. Phillip stood to his feet. “I understand that you are upset right now, but try to remember that I am still your father.” Phillip’s voice raised also. Max laughed sarcastically. “You, my father! That’s the funniest thing that I have ever heard of! The father that I thought I knew never existed. He was a fictional character that you made up. You spent my entire life teaching me to be respectful and responsible, all the while you were doing the exact opposite. I had to listen to my mother ask herself why did this happen to her. I would hear her silently crying in her room second guessing her abilities as a wife and mother. I don’t hate you because you made a mistake. To make a mistake is human. But you made the same mistake over and over again, not caring who you hurt in the process. You broke her heart, but thankfully she is has moved and found someone who will respect her and love her for the wonderful woman that she is. He makes less than half the money that you make and he is still more man than you will ever be.”
Phillip was at a loss for words. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realize the depth of your anger. When a parent raises a child, their one and only goal is to raise them to be the best that they can be. My dream was always that you would be everything that I wasn’t. I tried, but I knew that I would never be the man that I wanted to be, so I hoped that would be the better man. It turns out that I was right. If you were a parent, you would understand.” Phillip said softly. “You’re wrong, I am a parent and I have the same dreams that you had, but the difference between is I will strive to be the person that I want my daughter to be. She will know that I did more for her then throw money her way or pay for college. She will know that I am more than just talk, and that I am the type of person she would be proud to call dad.” Phillip eye’s widened. “I have a granddaughter? How old is she?” Max was not going to answer his question at first, but changed his mind. “She is five years old.” Phillip imagined what his granddaughter looked like. Brown hair, brown eyes, probably looked like her father. A tear escaped from Phillip’s eye. “I would very much like to meet her. I would also like for you to meet your sister, Melissa. She is a year younger than your daughter. I told her about you and she can’t wait to meet you.” Phillip desperately waited for Max’s answer. Max stared at him, jaws clenched. He is not going to use my daughter to ease his guilty conscious. I am not going to put her through the same pain as he did with me. Max thought. “I have to go back to the office. I’m sure that you know your way out.” Max walked out of the conference room, leaving Phillip there alone.
“Where’s Liz?” Max said aloud after listening to her answering machine for the fourth time. He really needed to talk to someone. Better yet, to hear her sweet voice. He called her office. No answer. He called her home and cell phone again. Still no answer. Fear started to set in. If she is not at home, she always will have her cell phone on for Jasmine’s sake. Max dialed Maria’s cell phone. She probably forgot to turn it on so calm down Max. Max thought taking deep breaths. “Hello.” Maria sobbed. It sounded like she had been crying. “Maria, it’s me Max. Is Liz with you?” “Max! I’ve been trying to reach you all day! Liz is in the hospital.” “ I am in my car. Hospital! What happened? Is she okay?” Max stopped breathing for a moment. Please God, let her be okay. Max prayed. “She stopped by the office to pick up a few things and she passed out in the lobby. She’s not awake and the doctor’s are still doing tests.” “I’m on my way.” Before Maria could respond, Max hung up the phone and pressed his foot on the accelerator.
Max ran through the hospital double doors to the waiting room. He saw Maria, Michael, and Jasmine sitting waiting for the results from the doctor. “Have you heard anything yet?” Max questioned, out of breath. “Not yet. We sure hear something soon though.” Michael said hold Maria. Max fixed his gaze on Jasmine, who was waking up from her nap. Max stooped down to meet her gaze. “Hey, sleepyhead. How’s it going?” “Fine. Is Mommy okay?” Jasmine rubbed her eyes. “She’s fine. The doctor had to give her a check up to find out why she got sick. She is going to be okay.” He didn’t know who he was trying to convince, her or himself. “Okay.” Jasmine wrapped her arms around his neck. Max held her tightly but careful not to hurt her. He was the one that was supposed to comfort Jasmine, instead Jasmine was comforting him. “Can I call you daddy now? Mommy told me that you were my real daddy and I don’t want to call you Uncle Max anymore.” Jasmine’s statement blew Max away. Liz told him about the conversation with Jasmine, and he told himself that he would give Liz and Jasmine a little time to adjust to the fact that Jasmine knew who he really was. “Nothing would make me happier.” Max smiled. “Okay Can you go on a field trip with me next week? My class is going to zoo and I want Jessica to see that my daddy is bigger than her daddy.” Max chuckled at his beautiful daughter. “Looks like you’ve got yourself a date.” Max and Jasmine hugged. The approached the group, quickly silencing all conversation, waiting to hear any news about Liz. “Are you the family of Liz Parker?” Everyone nodded. “She’s going to be fine. She was just exhausted. He fainting was her body’s way of saying that it needed a rest.” Everyone sighed in relief. “Her blood pressure was a little high, but we were able to get that under control. She must spend get plenty of rest. When she is discharged, she should spend at least three days in bed. No strenuous activities, especially in her condition.” “What condition doctor? I thought she was okay?” Max hands shook at the thought that she could be really sick. “She’s fine. She’s also pregnant. About 4 weeks I believe.” The room started to spin so fast that Max collapsed in the chair. His mouth opened, but no words came out. “Pregnant! Why didn’t she tell me?” Maria exclaimed. “More than likely, with the stress that she was under, she probably didn’t notice the symptoms. She’s still asleep, and she will have to stay overnight for observation. She can go home tomorrow.” Max finally pulled himself together. Another baby! We are going to have another baby! His insides were doing cartwheels. “May I see her?” Max managed to get out. “Who are you?” the doctor asked. “I’m the father.” Max answered. The doctor thought about it for a moment. “Okay, but only for a few minutes. I want her to get some rest.” The doctor said and walked out of the waiting room.
Max opened the hospital room door with ease, careful not to wake Liz. She looked so peaceful, like an angel. He walked over to her and sat down in the chair beside her bed. He started to think about the wonderful time they had together and the times that they spent apart, never realizing time may not be on their side. He held her hand and gently kissed it. The anger with his father suddenly became trivial. The most important thing now is making sure that he spends the rest of his life making sure that Liz, Jasmine and their child she was carrying knew how much he loved them and that they came first, no matter what. “I love you Liz. I promise that when you see me again, we will be planning to spend the rest of our lives together. But now, I have to do something that will make you proud of me.” Max whispered in her ear. Liz was still sleeping soundly. Max kissed her forehead and walked out of the room. Max pulled out his cell and dialed his office. His secretary, Samantha picked up. “Sam, I’m glad that I caught you. Look through the rolodex and retrieve my father’s home address. Also, contact my father and inform him of my arrival. There is something that I must discuss him. Call me back with the address. Thanks Sam.” Max hung up the phone as he took the first step to getting his life back.

Thanks for the feeback. I only have one chapter today, but I will update again in a couple of days. Thanks again and enjoy!
Max got into his car and waited for Sam to call him back with the address. His cell phone rang. “Max, I have the address.” She read the address to Max. “There is no need to go there though. His housekeeper said that he took his daughter to the park around the corner. On another note, Middleton left a urgent message for you. He wants to see you as soon as possible. I wanted to tell you when you called the first time but you were in a hurry.” Max started to fidget in his seat. “did he mentioned what it was about?” “No, but I’m sure that it had something to do with.” “What about Liz? Is this about her being in the hospital?” “No Max, She resigned this morning. I don’t know the details, but she came in, made a phone call, talked to Middleton, packed a few things and said goodbye to everyone. Wait a minute..did you say Liz was in the hospital? Is she okay?” Max almost ran into the car in front of him. “Hold on, rewind. Did you say resigned? Why would she resign!” Then it occurred to him why she resigned, and why the urgent meeting with Middleton. He knows. “Hey, calm down. Don’t shoot the messenger. I don’t know. I do know that Middleton asked a few employees about you and Liz. Nothing out of the ordinary, just simple questions. Questions like, how do the two of you behave when you are together. Nothing serious.” Yes, he definitely knows. Knowing Middleton, one had to go and Liz sacrificed her career for us. “Call Middleton and set up a meeting.” Max glanced at his watch. “It is now 4:00 pm. Tell him I will be there at 5:30.” Max heard Sam writing the information on the notepad. “Got it boss. Anything else?” Max let out a deep sigh. “Nope. Just wish me luck.” “Good luck Max.”
Max pulled into the parking lot next to the playground where Phillip and Melissa were playing. He walked over to the playground fence and stared at his little sister. Except for the blond hair, we both looked exactly alike. He thought. Max saw Melissa sliding down the sliding board. When Max saw Phillip catch Melissa at the bottom of the sliding board, he felt something pulling at his heart. The joy on their faces as Phillip had his little sister in a loving embrace. We used to have that kind of closeness, before everything changed. Max turned around to walk back to his car. I don’t think that I can handle this. “Max, Is that you?” Max slowly turned around. “I thought that was you. What are you doing here? Does it have something to do with the case?” Phillip looked concern. He walked up to Max, he was holding Melissa’s hand. “No. Everything is the same. I just can to say hi to Melissa.” Max stooped down to Melissa. “Hi, I’m Max” Max held out his hand. Melissa took it with caution. “I’m Melissa.” his sister said shyly. Melissa sort of clung to Phillip as if she was afraid that he was going to leave her. Max was so used to Jasmine’s outspoken personality, he pretty much expected all little girls that age acted that way. “She needs a little to get used to you. Melissa, why don’t you play with your friend Pattie for a little while so Max and I can talk. I promised that when I finish talking, we will play again.” Phillip said with a smile. Melissa gave her father a loving smile before running toward the sliding board with her friend.
Max and Phillip looked at each other, both trying to figure out what to say. “Want to sit.” Phillip pointed to the park bench. “Sure.” Max and Phillip sat on the bench, watching Melissa play. “She is so precious. Whenever she smiles at me or tells me that she loves me, I know that my whole life wasn’t shit. She was the only good thing that came from that disastrous marriage.” Phillip fixed his gaze on Max. “Why did you really come here Max?” Max thought he knew what he wanted to say to him. He rehearsed the speech over and over in his mind on the way over here, but when he tried to remember it, his mind went blank. “I thought I knew what to say to you, but now I am drawing a complete blank so bear with me.” Max took a deep sigh. “When I found out what you did to Mom, I felt that you not only betrayed her, but me also. Everything that you taught me growing up seemed to contradict your actions. I mean, how could I have trusted you after you lied for so long?” Listening to his son dredging up the past with emotions hurt like a knife. “Max, you have to know, if could change the past I would. But I can’t. Hell, I didn’t even learn from my mistakes. I truly do regret disrespecting your mother. I loved her with all of my heart. She is happy now, but it still doesn’t keep me from feeling guilty. What I truly do regret the most, is hurting you. I am sorry.” Max looked at his father for a moment, seeing the sincerity in his eyes. Max reached into his wallet, pulled out a picture, and handed it to Phillip. Phillip’s face lit up. “Is this my granddaughter?” Max nodded. “Her name is Jasmine. She’s smart, charming, and a real firecracker.” Phillip stared at the picture for a moment. “She looks like both of her parents. Tell me son, when are you going to marry Liz? Or are you going to make her wait forever?” “Well Actually.....wait a minute, how did you know who the mother is?” Max looked at Phillip, eyes widened. Phillip let out a deep throated laugh. “When you came into her office late and left, she sort of let me have it. I knew then that you two were more then friends. Only a woman in love would shoot that much venom.” Max laughed. “She is a little feisty isn’t she?” Phillip nodded in agreement. “Listen, I have to go back to office. Let’s just take this one step at a time okay? I don’t know what will happen, but I am willing to try. I will bring Jasmine here to see you one day” Max said. “Anything you want Max.” Max stood up. “Well, I have to get going. I will talk to you soon. Dad.” Phillip smiled. “I look forward to it.”
Max made it just in time for the meeting with Middleton. He knocked on the door. “Come in.” Max heard Middleton say. “Max, have a seat.” “No, thanks. I won’t be here very long.” Middleton was shocked at his tone. “I guess you found out about Liz. Good, there is no need to beat around the bush.” Max pulled a letter out of his briefcase. “My thoughts exactly. This is for you.” Middleton read the letter. “What is this? A letter of resignation! For what reason? I did not fire Liz, she resigned on her own.” “As you said, there is no need to beat around the bush. Liz was a value to this company. Whether you fired or she quit, you just let her go. And for what? That stupid rule. You always said that the reason for the rule is because of the tension of the workplace is case the couple decide to call it quits. Well, while you were doing your private investigating, did you know that we did break up for awhile? Wait a minute, you didn’t know that we broke up, because you didn’t know that we were involved. your conclusion was pure speculation. I have always admired you for your honesty and fairness, but you are not being fair James.” Middleton stood from his chair. “I like you a lot Max, but I cannot let this slide because of that. I would do the same thing with any other employee. I have to treat you as I would treat anyone else.” “I know you do, but that still doesn’t mean that I agree with your decision.” Middleton’s jaw clenched. “Are you telling me that you throwing away your chance at being partner at this firm for personal reasons?” Max’s anger began to rise, but he kept calm. “James, I am going with my gut. My gut instinct is telling me to take a position that made me choose between my job or the woman that I love will cost me dearly. I am not willing to pay that price.” Middleton gave Max an intense look. He knew that once he made his mind up, there was no changing it. “Are you sure that you want to do this? You are at peak of your career. Leaving now could hurt you a lot.” Max knew what Middleton was trying to do, and it wasn’t going to work. “I am sure. I will be here a few more days to finish out my father case, inform my clients of my departure, and then I am gone. I wish things would have ended differently James.” “Me too Max.” Middleton sat back down in his chair, continuing to work, not looking back up to Max. Max shook his head, turned and walked out of the office.

I had a little trouble with this chapter. I hope you like.
Liz’s eyes slowly opened from their deep slumber. Where am I? She wondered. She glanced around the room, realizing that she was in the hospital. What happened? How in the world did I end up in the hospital? She questioned herself. Liz remembered leaving Tess’s office, but nothing else. She glanced over to see someone asleep in the chair next to her bed. It was Max. Liz reached out to touch his hand. “Hey, wake up sleepyhead.” Liz said softly. Max swore that he heard her voice, but he thought that it was a dream. He heard his name being called again. Max opened his eyes to find Liz staring back at him. Max jumped out of the chair to sit beside Liz on the bed. “Good Morning beautiful. How are you feeling? You gave everyone quite a scare.” Max caressed her face gently. “I’m okay. The last thing I remember is being in the lobby at work, and then everything went dark. How long have I been here?” “Just one day. The doctor said that you were exhausted. That is why you fainted. The doctor will let you go home as soon as he can examine you.” Max paused and gently squeezed her hand preparing her for what he was about to say next. Liz sensed that something was wrong. “Max what is it? Is there something that you are not telling me?” Max knew that she was going to find out eventually, after all, it was her body. “There is something else Liz. The doctor discovered something else in the test results. You’re pregnant. About four weeks along.” Liz stared at Max in awe. Pregnant? How could she have not known! She was feeling different lately, but she thought that it could have been stress. Maybe, deep down she knew she was pregnant. I wondered what Max reaction was? Liz thought.
Max was unable to read her reaction to the news. Her expression was totally blank. “Liz, are you okay?” “Yeah.” Liz responded quietly. “I don’t know how you feel about this, and whatever you decide, I will be with you every step of the way. Whatever you decide, as long as we are together. I know that I have been a bastard these past couple of weeks, but when I found out that you were in the hospital, I saw my life flash before my eyes. I thought about all those moments that I wasted, not touching, holding you, telling you how much you mean to me. All because of my pride. I promised, I am willing to anything to make sure that you know how much you mean to me.” Liz’s eyes filled with tears, moved by Max’s words. “You won’t have to do much Max. I know that you love me, just as much as I love you. I wasn’t angry when you decided to distance yourself a little. You just needed a little time to get over your anger. I am just so sorry that I was the cause of it.” Liz looked down at her stomach, holding it protectively. “You said that you will be with me whatever I decide to do. I want to keep the baby. Like Jasmine, this child is a result of our love for each other. I wouldn’t think of doing anything else except loving and cherishing it. Besides, Jasmine said that she wanted a little brother, she may get her wish.” Liz chuckled. “You never said what you wanted? What do you want Max?” Liz watched Max slowly get up off of the bed and kneel on the floor. “It should be obvious what I want. Nothing would give me greater joy then to watch grow big with our child. The beautiful glow on your face, the same way with Jasmine. But what I want more than anything else…” Max pulled out a velvet box and opened. “Oh my God, Max!” Liz was in complete shock. It was a beautiful pear shaped diamond. “I bought this ring the day Jasmine was born. I knew that one day, I would muscle up enough courage to give it to you. You are my best friend, my lover, and the mother of my children. I love you will all of my heart. Would you do me the honor being my wife?” Liz didn’t waste time giving him an answer. “Yes! I will marry you.” Liz wrapped her arms around Max’s neck. They held on to each other, unable to let go. Max let go long enough to put the ring on Liz’s finger “I know proposing to in a hospital is not really the romantic setting that I imagined….” “I don’t care. You could have proposed to me in the street next to a garbage truck and I wouldn’t have cared.” Liz hugged Max again. “I hope that you don’t mind being married to an unemployed lawyer. I resigned yesterday. I know that you went through a lot to help me get the job, but I couldn’t work there anymore.” Max looked at her with understanding eyes. “I know what happened. I know why it happened. I spoke with Middleton also. What I don’t understand is, how in the world did he find out? I know that were careful?” “I know the answer to that. It was Tess. She called Middleton anonymously stating that our relationship was affecting our work abilities.” Max began to see red. “That disgusting little bitch! When I see her again….” Liz put her finger over his lips. “Don’t worry. We had a woman to woman talk and we were able to reach an understanding. Let’s just forget about her. She is nothing as far as I am concerned. How did your talk with Middleton go?” “It went pretty good. I gave him my resignation letter also.” Liz eyes widened with shock. “Max! I don’t want you to quit your job because of me. What about Middleton? I know that he meant a lot to you.” “You mean a lot to me. That was a stupid rule anyway. We were both professionals and an asset to the firm, and if he couldn’t see it, then it is his lost. Don’t worry, we’ll manage okay.” How could she resist those beautiful amber eyes? “Okay.” “I thought that when you are feeling better, you and I could take Jasmine to see Phillip. I want you to meet my little sister.” Max said with a smile. Couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “What brought that on? Are you sure I was knocked out for only one day?” “My father and I talked yesterday. We’re taking it slow, starting off as friends.” Just as Liz was about to say something, Max’s cell phone went off. “Hello? Good morning James. Yes…Yes…I understand. I going to have to confer with my fiancée, but will call you back with a definite answer. Thanks.” “What did Middleton want?” “He wanted to give us our jobs back. I will be partner and you will have a guaranteed 15% raise. Our relationship is permitted as long as it is kept private.” Liz couldn’t help but laugh. “Do you think that we should take it?” “I don’t know. I was thinking that we could start a little adventure of our own. How does Evans & Evans sound? Maybe when we want to fool around a little, we could hang up a sign that says, “Gone to lunch. Be back in an hour”.” The idea appealed to Liz, a lot. “A chance to do what we want, not being afraid of showing our love. It does sound tempting, but how can we afford to open our own practice? It takes a lot of money to do that.” “Don’t be so negative. Besides, the baby can hear you.” Liz shook her head. “I am only one month. The baby won’t be able to hear anything for a few months.” “Don’t you know by now? My children are super-intelligent. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jasmine was in college by the age of 9 and this kid came out doing cartwheels. Isn’t that right tough guy?” Max said rubbing Liz’s flat stomach. Liz looked lovingly into Max’s eyes. “What if it isn’t a boy?” Max inched closer to Liz until their lips touched. “Then I will have three precious gems to take care of. We could also keep trying until we do.” Max and Liz laughed before engaging in a loving kiss.

Sorry for the wait. I had a serious writer's block. Thanks for the feedback.
Chapter 22- one month later…….
“You are so beautiful. Not as beautiful as I was on my wedding day, you are definitely close.” Maria joked as she fixed Liz’s train on her dress. “Thanks for the compliment, I think. I can’t believe today is finally here. I am so happy I think that I going to faint.” “Me neither, but at least you could have waited a few more months so that we could have planned a big church wedding. Planning parties, shopping, and bossing people around is my specialty ya know.” Liz chuckled. Maria and Liz were in Phillip Evan’s guesthouse getting ready for the big event. As much as she would hate to admit it, she thought that this day would never come. Even for a small wedding, the planning was a hassle. The only thing that wasn't a hassle, was the invitations. Max and Liz decided on a small wedding, so only close friends and family were invited. First, there was the problem with finding a decent band to play at her reception, the decorating the orchid trees on his property, and most of all picking the perfect dress. After endless searching, she finally chose a white, off the shoulder-wedding gown, satin, embedded with Venice beaded lace with a chapel train. Her hair was pinned up in a ponytail with curls around her face. “Max and I talked about doing the huge wedding thing and decided against it. Number one, I am pregnant. In a couple of months, you would have to roll my big butt down the aisle. Secondly, we wanted to get married as soon as possible. We’ve waited long enough to start our lives together Maria, we don’t want to wait any longer. Besides, I would rather have our close friends and family there instead of staring at people we hardly even know.” Maria looked at her friend in amazement. Her friends have come a long way to be together, and it is understandable that they wanted to start their lives as soon as possible. Tears started to well up in Maria’s eyes, but she forced them back. “Well, it’s a good thing that your future father-in-law is filthy rich. I can’t believe he let you use his backyard to get married. It’s the size of a football field!” As soon as Liz saw Phillip Evans five-acre property, she fell in love with it instantly. He had this huge, beautiful fishpond with it seems like tons of rainbow fish in it. He even had a gazebo built so he could sit with Melissa and watch the sun set. When Phillip offered to have the wedding at his home, Liz wanted to jump on the chance. It just seemed so peaceful and beautiful here. “Max wasn’t crazy about the idea at first, considering that they are still mending fences and all. It took a lot of convincing, but I talked him into it.” Liz said. “So, have you guys talked about your current employment situation? You know, it isn’t good for both of the parents to bestanding in the unemployment line.” Maria said jokingly. “Don’t worry. We have plenty saved up to get us through. Max is looking into getting a loan so that we could start our own practice. It might be a little tough to start, but considering that Max’s clients from Middleton’s firm offered to go with him, it shouldn’t be too much of a struggle to get the firm off of the ground. Everything is going to work out you’ll see.” Just then, Jasmine and Melissa walks into the room. “The piano lady says it’s time to get married.” Jasmine said with excitement. “Okay, sweetie. Are you guys ready to be flower girls? Remember, being a flower girl is a big job. Are you sure you can handle it?” With basket of flowers in their hands, Jasmine and Melissa looked at each other. “Are you kidding? We were born ready.” They said in unison. Liz stared at them in amazement. “Right Auntie Maria?” Liz looked at her friend. “Right kiddo.” Liz looks at Maria. Maria shrugs her shoulders. “They came to me yesterday and said that they were kind of nervous about walking down the aisle. Jasmine was afraid that she might drop the flowers so I talked to them a little.” Liz laughed and shook her head. Jasmine was jumping up and down with excitement. “Come on Mom. Dad’s and Uncle Mike is outside waiting for you” “Are you nervous?” Maria asked Liz. “I know that I should be, but I’m not. When this day is over, I will be Mrs. Max Evans.” “Well, in that case, goodbye, Liz Parker.” Maria gave Liz a big hug. “Please don’t cry, we spent hours on your makeup, I don’t want to ruin it. I don’t think you want to spend your wedding day looking like a raccoon.” Liz laughed. “Yeah I guess you’re right.” Maria looks at Jasmine. “Okay sport, open the door and let’s start the show.” Jasmine gave her mom and Maria a thumbs up and opened the door.
Max, Michael and the reverend stood anxiously waiting for the ceremony to start. Very soon he was going to start the life that he always wanted. “Michael, do you have the rings?” Michael rolled his eyes in the back of his head. “Dude, how many times are you going to ask me that? You asked me yesterday, you called me 5:30 am this morning, and you just asked me five minutes ago. I have them! Would you just relax.” Michael whispered. “I can’t help it. I……” Just as he was about to finish his sentence, the music started. Max and Michael stood in military stance. The door to the guesthouse opened and Jasmine came out first. She was so cute walking aisle tossing the rose pedals on the ground. Watching his daughter and little sister walking with confidence made him smile. He waited with anticipation as Maria walked next. Next came Liz. If he ever felt any nervousness, it was gone now. When he saw her in her dress, his hear almost stopped. He never thought she would look more beautiful then she did right now. She glided down the aisle with the grace of a swan. Liz finally made her way to Max they looked into each other’s eyes, and then to the reverend. The reverend began to speak.
“Friends and Family. We are gathered here today to witness this union between Max Evans and Elizabeth Parker. The couple decided to write their own vows. Max looked at Liz, memorizing everything that he wanted to say to her. “Liz Parker, are the love of my life, my reason for living, the inspiration I have always sought and, as such, pledge my undying dedication to you for the rest of my life. I love you with all of my heart and soul and know that as long as you are next to me I will be willing to give my life to you, if necessary, to ensure your happiness and well being.” Max took Liz’s hand in his. “I take your hand in marriage and hold you to be, from this day on, an integral part of me, like it was my own flesh, and promise to look upon you forever as I would look upon myself, with dedication, understanding, and unconditional love.” Liz couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. She knew she looked awful, but she didn’t care. It was her turn to recite her vows. She took a deep breath and spoke the words from her heart. I love you Max Evans with all my heart and soul. You are everything that I could ever hope to find in a man. You are loving, thoughtful, caring, smart, and handsome in my eyes and your love always makes me feel like the happiest and luckiest woman alive. I am proud to have you as my life’s partner and I promise that I will always be at your side, through good and bad, and give you everything that is in my power to grant to assure your health and happiness for as long as I live. I am yours forever.” There was not a dry eye in the crowd. Tears filled his eyes as he heard his love’s words. They smiled at each other, and then to the reverend.
“Do you Maxwell Phillip Evans, take Elizabeth Ann Parker, to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, till death do you part, for as long as you both shall live?” “I do.” The reverend looked at Liz. “Do you Elizabeth Ann Parker, take Maxwell Phillip Evans, to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, till death do you part, for as long as you both shall live?” “I do.”
“The rings please.” Max looked at Michael. Michael patted his vest, searching for the ring. Max eyes widened when he realized that Michael did not have the ring. Michael smiled and pulled the ring out of his pocket and handed it to Max. Max mouthed the words, I’m going to kill you. Michael chuckled softly. Max turned his attention back to Liz. “Repeat after me, with this ring, I thee wed.” Max put the ring on Liz’s finger. “With this ring, I thee wed.” Liz did the same with Max.
“Now Mr. Evans, you may kiss your bride.” The reverend said with a smile. Max gently cupped Liz’s face, looking into her eyes. He saw her love for him reflecting in her beautiful brown eyes. He wanted to cherish this moment forever. He leaned toward her, kissing her softly, gently. The moment their lips touched, just for a moment, everything else seemed to disappear. They heard no music, no crowds cheering, just the sound of their heartbeats, beating together in a perfect rhythm. Max and Liz broke away from their kiss, looking at each other, smiling.
“May I present to you, Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell Evans.” The reverend said loudly. The crowd cheered.
Note: The vows were not written by me. That is what took me so long. I could put together the right words for our couple, so I borrowed them. Thanks

Max and Liz held each other close as they swayed to the music. The sun was shining brightly, the scenery was breathtaking, and their closest family and friends were with them so share their joy. Everything was perfect. “Hi Mrs. Evans.” Max said with a smile. Mrs. Evans. That name was like music to her ears. “Hi yourself Mr. Evans.” “You know, in a few months, you are going to have to put me in a wheelbarrow just to get me on the dance floor.” Max chuckled. “If I have to use a wheelbarrow, I’ll just attach a bicycle bell on the handle, ringing the bell and screaming Outta my way, lady with a baby coming through! Everyone move to the opposite side of the dance floor because by the looks of it, she will definitely need a lot of room.” Liz playfully hit Max on the arm. “That’s not funny! I want a divorce.” “Too late. You’re stuck with me forever.” Liz brushed her lips against Max’s. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Max felt a tap on his shoulder. “Excuse me, may I cut in?” Max turned around to see Jeff Parker standing there. “Of course, but don’t forget to give her back to me. After all, she is an Evans now.” Jeff nodded in agreement. “That maybe true, but she will always be a Parker and my baby girl. By the way Max, we haven’t had a man to man talk about you marrying my daughter, so I will make this short and sweet. Liz is a special person. I am not saying this because she is my daughter, I am saying this because it is true. Bottom line, make her happy. If you don’t, I will break your legs. I would really hate to hurt you, but I will.” “Dad!” Liz embarrassed by her father’s threat. Max cut in before Liz could say another word. “That’s okay Liz. If some guy came out of nowhere claiming to be in love with Jasmine, I would do serious bodily harm. Luckily, I have a long way to go before that happens.” “And if you kill the poor boy, you won’t have to worry about legal representation.” Liz laughed as she pictured Max interrogating at every boyfriend that had. “Mr. Parker, you daughter’s happiness is the only thing that I want in this world. I would die before I would make her unhappy.” “I’ll hold you to that son, and please, call me Jeff.” Jeff and Max shook hands. Could this possibly get any better? Liz thought as she watched her father and husband embrace each other. “Now get out of her so I can dance with my daughter.” Max held his hands up in defeat. “Okay. I’m gone.” Max walked away as Phillip started to dance with Liz. “Where’s Mom?” Liz glanced quickly around the dance floor in search for her mother. “She is over at the table with Dianne Evans. Apparently they are discussing names for the new baby and they’re making schedule regarding Jasmine. I think they have a contest to see who is going to spoil the children the most.” Liz shook her head. “You know, I meant what I said when I said that you were special. You had to take on major responsibility at a young age, but you remain strong. Against our wishes, you preferred to make it on your own and earn your own way. Look at you now. You earned your law degree and now you’re a lawyer.” “I’m an unemployed lawyer.” Liz said sarcastically. “Regardless of your situation, I am very proud of you sweetheart. Max is a great guy. I hope that you two will be very happy together.” Tears filled Liz’s brown eyes as she wrapped her arms around her father’s neck. “I love you so much Dad.” “I love you too.”
Max walked over to the table where Mrs. Parker and his mom were sitting. They were chuckling until they saw him approaching and then they stopped abruptly. “What are you two ladies giggling about?” Max questioned. “Grandma talk which means that it is none of your business. Now, are you going to stare at me all day or are you going to ask me to dance?” Dianne stood up waiting for her son’s answer. “Actually, that is why I came over here.” Max looked over to his mother in law. “You, my lovely lady are next.” Max winked his eye. Nancy glanced over to Dianne. “Dianne, your son is a real charmer. Now wonder my daughter fell in love with him.” “I take no credit for that, he is just like his father.” “Mom, from what my aunts told me, you broke a lot of hearts in your day.” “What do you mean my day? You act like it is over for me! I may be older than you, but fat lady did not sing yet, so it is not over. Now come on son, let’s dance.” Dianne dragged her son onto the dance floor. “You look so happy son. Happier then I have seen you in a long time.” “Mom, I am happy. I have a gorgeous, intelligent wife, a beautiful daughter and another miracle on the way. My life couldn’t get any better. Where is that guy you were seeing? Douglas right?” “Things didn’t work out between us. He wanted more than what I was ready for.” Dianne glanced around. “Considering you are having your wedding and reception at his house, you two must have talked. I am glad that you two worked it out. The distance between you two lasted long enough. What happened between us happened a long time ago. I got over it and moved on and I am glad that you did too.” Max smiled at his mother. “You know what? You sound just like Liz.” “Well I guess makes Liz a very smart girl.” Max felt another tap on his shoulder. He turned around to see his father standing there. “I know that you don’t want to dance with me, so I am guessing that you want to dance with this lovely lady.” Max took a step back. “That’s okay Max, if you want to continue to dance with your mother, that’s okay.” Max looked at his Mom for any sign of approval. “It’s okay Max. I think that I could handle one dance with your father.” “Okay. She’s all yours. I can’t believe this! Every time I get a dancing partner, someone steals her from me. I am going to find my daughter, maybe she will dance with her old man.” Max playfully stomps away. “What a son do you have. He is something else.” Phillip said. “Yes he is. I look at him and I know that we did something right. Everything that we went through was not for nothing.” “Dianne, there is something that I have been wanting to say for a long time. I am so sorry for putting you through so much pain these last years. Max made me take a long look at myself. I saw a selfish old jerk who thought that he had to be with younger women to hang on to my youth. I realize now that my youth is in my children and grandchildren and I rejoice in that. It was also when I looked into your eyes. The way they were sparkle when you looked at me. I wish so much that I could go back in time and change things. I would do things so differently.” Dianne stared in awe at Phillip’s words. She wanted so much to apologize for all the pain that he caused, but she never expect him to look at her with such sincerity and love. Dianne finally gathered enough strength to speak. “I accept your apology Phillip. I just hope that one day we could be friends again.” “That’s all that I want Dianne. That’s all that I want.” Maybe one day we could be more. Phillip thought. Phillip held Dianne tightly around her waist and felt something that he hadn’t felt in a long time. He felt at home.
“Wasn’t the ceremony beautiful? What a wonderful idea to have your wedding and reception outside. It is so natural and beautiful. We should have had our wedding outside.” Maria said to Michael. “If we did, you would have complained about the bugs and the humidity, and you would blame me for not talking you out of the idea. Trust me, we were better off having it at a church. Now stop your yapping and kiss me.” Maria planted a huge kiss on her husband’s lips. “Did you see how beautiful they looked together? After all these years and hardships they finally found each other. I am so happy for them.” “Can I use that in my best man speech? I tried, but I am out of ideas.” Maria shoved him lightly. “Michael I’m serious!” Maria wrapped her arms around Michael. “So, when should tell everyone about our little happiness that is coming.” Maria said patting her stomach. “All in due time. Let them have their day first. They deserve it.” Michael’s selfless words made her love him even more. “I love you so much.” “I love you too motor mouth.”
After the dance with Dianne, Phillip glanced over to see Max playing with Jasmine and Melissa. He walked over to them. “Grandpa!” “Daddy!” they both screamed in unison running toward Phillip. “Hey kids, are you having fun so far?” “Great.” they both answered. “Max, do me a favor. Get Liz and meet me in the house. I want to give you your wedding present but not in front of the guest.” “Sure. Give me five minutes.” Phillip smiled and walked toward the house.
Max and Liz met Phillip in his den. They both looked at each other wondering what is going on. Neither had a clue. “I bet you both are wondering why I asked you in here.” Liz answered first. “Well, the thought did cross my mind.” Phillip reached into his jacket pocket and retrieved two envelopes. He handed each of them one envelope. “These gifts are more than just a wedding present. It is my way of saying thank you. Because of you I have joint custody of my daughter, the divorce did not milk me dry, and you gave me a granddaughter and another grandchild. These gifts will not equal to what you have given me, but I hope that it is close.” Max opened his envelope first. “Holy Mother of God!” Max looked at Liz in total shock. “What is it?” “It is a lease for a building on 123rd and Madison.” Phillip amused at his son’s surprise. “That my son, is to start your own law practice. The building is bought and paid for, and it is all yours.” “I can’t take this Dad. I don’t want any handouts.” Max started to hand the lease to Phillip but he refused it. “ I knew that you were going to say that, that is why I will consider it a loan. You can repay me, however long it takes. Besides, I consider this an investment. I will definitely need a lawyer someday.” Max stared at the lease as if it was a figment of his imagination. When he realized that it was real, he looked up at his father. “Thank you. I promise that I will pay you back. Every cent.” “I know that you will son.” Phillip turned to Liz. “Now it is your turn.” Liz was still reeling from Max’s gift. We are going to open our own practice! Liz snapped out of her trance. “My gift. Yeah right.” Liz tugged at the sealed envelope. When Liz saw what was in the envelope, her jaw dropped. “Liz, what is it?” Liz looked up at her father in law. “It’s an all expense paid trip to Jamaica. Paid airfare, hotel, everything.” “You’re kidding. Let me see.” Max grabbed the envelope out of Liz’s hand like a child. “You don’t have to do this you know.” Max said. He started to feel like moocher taking all these extravagant gifts from his father. Phillip sensed the feeling that his son had. He put his hand on his son’s shoulder. “Like I said before, these gifts are nothing compared to what you gave me. Now that envelope in your hand is where you will be having your honeymoon. I want you to enjoy yourselves. It could be the last time that you will be able to for a while.” Liz hugged Phillip. “Thank you so much Phillip. You don’t know how much this means to us.” “All I ask is that you too have fun and be happy.” Max gently pulled Liz toward him and looked into her eyes. “You don’t have to worry about that, we are happy.” Liz said and kissed Max. In an instant they both forgot that Phillip was in the room. “I think that I should leave you two alone.” When the couple didn’t respond to Phillip, he slowly and quietly walked out of the den and closed the door. At the sound of the door closing, Max and Liz broke their kiss. “I guess we drove your Dad away.” Max laughed out loud. “Well, you really do need to control yourself.” “Me! You’re the one who was grabbing my butt!” Max exclaimed. “That’s because you have a really sexy butt.” Liz squeezed his cheeks. “Mrs. Evans, you are a naughty girl.” “If you think that I am naughty now, what until I get my hands on you tonight.” Max imagined her in a beautiful white teddy and inhaled deeply. “Come on, let’s go back to this party and get it over with.” Liz knew exactly what was on his mind and chuckled at his devilish thoughts. “The sooner it’s over that better.” Liz kissed his cheek and held his hand as they walked back to their party.
Thanks for the incredible feedback.

Chapter 24-9 months later at St. Memorial Church
“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.” The groom looked at his bride tenderly before kissing her on the lips. “Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you Mr. and Mrs. Evans.” the reverend announced.
The beautifully decorated reception hall was filled with love and laughter. Everyone watched Diane and Phillip sway to the music, as if they were dancing on clouds. Liz, Max, their two month old son, David Eric, sat at the table with a very pregnant Maria and Michael. Liz watched Maria struggle in her chair. “Are you okay Maria? You look as if you are about to bust!” Liz teased. Maria however, did not find it amusing at all. “Liz, I don’t know how you did it, and you did it twice. Stop laughing, I’m serious! My back hurts, my ankles are swollen, and I haven’t seen my feet in three months!” Liz tried to suppress her laughter, but she couldn’t help herself. Liz noticed that Michael wasn’t in his chair. “Where’s Michael? I didn’t notice that he left?” Liz asked. “I made him go to the car to get me a pillow for my back. I really wanted some breathing room. He keeps fussing over me, it is getting on my nerves. Besides, every time that I look at him, I yell at him saying, you did this to me!” Liz sympathized with her friend’s position. “Maria I understand how you feel, but don’t you think that you are being a little to hard on him? He is just excited about the baby, and he loves you so much.” Maria instantly felt guilty about her harsh treatment toward Michael. “You’re right. I didn’t mean to. These damn hormones.” Liz looked over Maria’s shoulder to see Michael coming back with a pillow in his hand. “Here you go sweetie. Is that okay?” Michael adjusted the pillow against the back of the chair. “Yes, it’s fine. Michael, I’m sorry for the way that I have been treating you for the past few weeks. It’s just that I am nine months pregnant, it’s hot, and it is very hard not to get emotional. I also am going to apologize in advance for anymore mean things that I will say to you in the near future.” “Don’t worry about it, I know it’s only the pain talking. Besides, Max gave me some tips on how to handle my bruised ego, he also warned me about the delivery room.” Michael turned to Liz. “Didn’t you almost break his hand?” Liz looked at Max with an evil eye. “Max, you promised you wouldn’t tell anyone about that!” Max shrugged. “I couldn’t help it. The info was just too good.” Liz looked at Max holding their baby and smiled. “Where is Jasmine?” Michael asked. “Jasmine and Michelle are dancing with Phillip. These days, whenever you see Jasmine, you will see Michelle. They are like two peas in a pod.” Michael took Maria by the hand. “Since my usual dance partner is unavailable, would you like to dance?” Maria giggled. “That is why I married you. Your charming personality.” It took about a minute, but Michael finally got Maria out of the chair onto the dance floor. Liz, Max and the baby were at the table alone. “Hey handsome. How’s the little soldier doing?” Liz asked. Max looked down at the sleeping baby. “It looks like he’s had all the action that he could take.” Liz ran her fingers through Max’s hair. “What about Dad?” “I’ll be okay. I have a meeting with new client who could bring a lot of money to our firm.” For the past few months, Max has been working on building clientele for their new firm, Evans & Evans. Fortunately, clients from Middleton & Towson, were willing to follow Max and Liz anywhere they went. “What are you thinking about? I know that you are in deep thought when you have that look on your face?” Max smiled. “Sometimes I hate it when you know me so well. I was just thinking about my parents getting married again, about us, and I was saying to myself, if someone would have told me a year ago that I would be married to you, have my own firm, and my parents back together, I would have told them to take a hike.” Liz slides her chair closer to Max’s. “I thought about that too, but you know what? Let’s not think about that, focus on the fact that I love you, we have two beautiful children, and a happy family. It’s everything that we could have hoped for.” “You are such the optimist.” Max leans in to kiss Liz but stopped in his tracks when he heard Jasmine’s voice. “Mom! Dad! Auntie Maria had an accident!”
“What’s wrong honey?” Liz stood up panicked. Something has happened to the baby. “Uncle Mike and Auntie Maria were dancing and all of a sudden Auntie maria peed all over the floor. Uncle Mike said, Holy crap, it’s time, and Auntie Maria told me to get you guys. “Oh my god! Her water broke!” Max and Liz said in unison. They walked over to where Michael and Maria were. Maria sat in a chair with a look of pain on her face. “Liz, it hurts so much. I need something to take this pain away, or at least a hammer to knock me out.” “Maria, will be okay. Breathe before you pass out.” “I don’t care as long as I don’t feel these contractions.” Maria screamed as another contraction ripped through her body. Liz turned to Michael. “They are close. Get her to a hospital now!” Michael shook his head as he pick Maria up and carried her out of the reception hall.. “Are you coming?” Liz heard Maria say. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” Liz said back.

“Please God! Get this thing out of me!” Maria screamed at the ceiling. The contractions were two minutes apart and it felt like her insides were being ripped apart. “You have to control your breathing Mrs. Guerin before you pass out. Please Mr. Guerin, explain to your wife the importance of her breathing.” The nurse explained. Michael looked at Maria, who had the look of the devil on her face. He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it and looked back to the nurse. “I think you should take this one. I would like to still be alive when my baby is born.” Before the nurse could say anything, Maria spoke up. “If you say anything that doesn’t involve taking pain medication, I swear I will fucking kill you!” Maria said between pants. Michael was embarrassed, but the nurse kept her composure. “It is too late for pain medication. The contractions are too close. You are eight centimeters and the baby will be here soon. Besides, you are the one who said that you wanted your labor to be natural. You only have a window of opportunity before you can change your mind, and now that window is closed.” “Well open it back up dammit!” Maria gritted through her teeth. Michael held her hand, feeling helpless that he could not take his wife’s pain away. “It will be over soon sweetheart, I promise.” Michael didn’t know what else to say to soothe her. “Michael you said that an hour ago and look, I am still in this delivery room with the most god awful pain you could ever imagine! Do me a favor. If you want to be supportive, just be quiet and hold my hand.” Michael held out his hand for Maria to take it just as another contraction was about to rip through her. “Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!” Maria and Michael cried in unison. Michael squeezed his eyes tightly to block out the pain that Maria was inflicting upon him. Maria released the vice grip that she had on his hand. “Sorry.” was all that she could say. Michael down at his exhausted wife and wondered how long she can take this. He brushed her wet hair from her face. “I love you, do you know that. You are taking this a lot better then I would have.” “I love you too. But from now on, you sleep on the couch.” They both chuckled together.
The doctor walks into the deliver room. “Good evening Maria and Michael. Looks like you guys had an adventurous day today.” “Adventurous is not what I would call it doc. I ruin a very nice dress today.” Maria joked. “Well let’s take a look and see how long we have until we have a happy ending.” the doctor said and goes to examine her. The doctor turns to the nurse. “How far apart are the contractions?” “About 2 minutes apart.” the nurse answered. “Good news Guerins. Looks like you will see your baby very soon. It is time to start pushing. Michael, help Maria to a sitting position.” Just as Maria sat up, she had another contraction. “Breathe, Maria just breathe.” the doctor tried to remind her. “Now on your next contraction, I want you to push as hard as you can and hold it for ten seconds. Okay?” the doctor explained to her. Maria nodded her head yes. “Another one is coming!” Maria yelled. “Okay, remember what I said. One…Two….Three….Push!”
Liz, Max, Jasmine, and David were waiting for the arrival of Maria and Michael’s baby. “Why is Auntie Maria screaming like that? Did she just say a bad word!” Jasmine put her hand over mouth in surprise. Max put his daughter on his lap to explain to her. “When mommies have their babies, it hurts.” Jasmine turns to her mother who was nursing David. “Did it hurt when you were having me?” “Yes it did. But when you were born, I forgot all about the pain. In fact, I don’t even remember the pain. I only remember what a beautiful little baby you were.” “Was I really?” Liz smiled at her daughter. “Yes you were.” Jasmine wrapped her arms around Liz and kissed her cheek. Five minutes later, the heard baby cries from the delivery room and a loud thud. Max and Liz looked at each other, wondering what the loud thud was. A few minutes later, the doctor came out. “It’s a boy. Mother and child are perfectly fine.” Everyone let out a sigh of relief. “What about Michael?” Liz asked. “Michael passed out when I asked him if he wanted to cut the umbilical cord. I guess it was just too much excitement for him.” Max laughed. “I am never going to let him live this one down. Is it okay to see them?” “As soon as Maria is settled in her room, then you can see her.”
“Isn’t he precious?” Maria said as she held her baby. She opened the blanket to see her new baby. She touched all ten fingers and toes, still amazed that this wonderful being was inside her less then an hour ago. Jasmine stuck her little finger out so the baby could grasp it. “He is so tiny and cute. Yay! Now I have two babies to pick on when they get bigger.” Jasmine laughed at her little joke. “He is beautiful Maria. It looks like little David will have someone to get in trouble with.” Liz smiled holding David. “Have you thought of a name for him yet?” Max asked Michael. “Not yet. We are still in awe of him, that we haven’t thought of one yet.” “How about after his daddy? A wonderful son should be named after his wonderful father.” Maria smiled lovingly at her husband. “Michael Jr? Honey are you sure?” “Yes, I am definitely sure.” “Okay. Michael Jr. it is.” “Well, Maxwell. You know what this means for us now, don’t you buddy? Eighteen years of birthday parties, barbeques, chasing Jasmine’s future date away, and attending sport games. Are you ready for that?” Max looked at his family, smiled, and placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder. “Michael, I have been ready for it my entire life. How about you? You look like you are going to have your hands full.” Michael looked at Maria holding their son. “Yeah, I will. It will be worth it though. Yeah, it definitely will be worth it.” “You guys stop whispering over there. Michael come over here and hold your son.” Maria said. “It doesn’t seem like a bad idea for you to do the same Max. I think David wants to talk to his Dad.” The two Dads moved to their designated places to hold their babies. “It’s nice to know that our men are all grown up now.” Maria said smiling at the guy’s holding their infants and walking them around the room, making silly noises at them. Liz thought about everything she went through to get where she is today. Even though the road was hard, she wouldn’t trade it for the world. “Yeah, they are aren’t they? It took us a while, but we finally whipped them into shape.” She got up from the chair and walked over to where Max was standing. “Don’t you have to meet with a client soon?” “I called the client and cancelled until tomorrow. I told him that there was a family emergency. It’s one of the perks of being a boss. Besides, I much rather be here with you and our children.” Liz, touched by what he said, kissed Max gently on his lips. “I love you, do you know that?” “Liz, I have always known that. Even before you did.” “Really? How could you have known that?” Max looked adoringly at his wife and whispered in her ear. “I’ll show you later tonight after the kids go to bed.” Max smiled wickedly. “You are evil, do you know that? Keep going, I think I like it. You know what Max? We have come a long way a short amount of time. Do you think that it was anything short of a miracle?” “I wouldn’t call it a miracle. We were destined to be. I knew that the moment I laid eyes on you.” “I didn’t know you were an optimist.” “You would be surprised of the many skills that you don’t know of yet. But don’t worry, you have about 50 years to find out.” “I look forward to finding them out Mr. Evans. Come on, let’s join the others.”
I would like to thank everyone for being so supportive on my very first fic. I appreciate it a lot.
