What's Simple Is True (Prologue)
I've been thinking about the last year of my life--about how so many things have happened. About how so many unexpected changes have occurred so suddenly with absolutely no warning.
But out of everything, I think what surprises me the most is how I woke up one day and saw--really saw--one of my best friends for the first time.
It's funny how you can spend countless hours with a person, know everything--every single minute detail about his life as well as you know your own--and still not really see him.
And then suddenly something happens that makes you open your eyes and you can't stop staring.
Something happens that makes you realize that this friend means so much more to you than you ever thought possible.
And you suddenly can't imagine ever having felt differently.
And everything feels so right, so perfect that you can hardly believe it's real.
Then someone casts a stone. And it all shatters....
"Liz, order up!" Michael called, leaning through the window to the kitchen.
Maria turned to see Liz wiping off the counter, completely oblivious to what was going on around her. She frowned. "Liz?"
Her best friend didn't even look up.
She exchanged glances with Michael, who shrugged and went back to work. Maria walked over and waved her hand in front of Liz's face. "Hello? Earth to Liz!"
Liz blinked and straightened up. "What?"
"Table four's order is ready."
"Oh." Without another word, Liz walked over the window, picked up the order, delivered it to table four, then returned to the counter.
Maria stared at her. "Are you okay?"
"Why?" she repeated. "Because you're acting more of a space case today than Spaceboy over there. Liz, what happened last night? I mean, we weren't at homecoming for a whole half-hour before you left. Without even saying goodbye, I might add. So what happened? Did Max and Frosty the Snow Bitch show up?"
"No, no. It wasn't that."
"Then what?" Maria waited expectantly.
The image of Alex and Isabel slow dancing flashed through her mind, and she forced away the jealous, hurt feeling the picture brought with it. She quickly recalled the kiss she and Alex had shared on her roof in the rain.
<"What is it, Liz? Why are you crying?" He touched her cheek and brushed the wet hair out of her eyes.
Liz shivered and her eyes drifted shut again. She choked back a sob.
Alex reached out and gathered her into his arms, pulling her to him and cradling her against his chest. "Please tell me," he pleaded, stroking her hair.
She shook her head against his chest. "I--can't."
"Because you'll hate me."
Alex pulled away from her and stared into her eyes. "That would never happen."
Liz stared back at him and then moved closer to his face. She closed her eyes and pressed her lips against his gently.
His eyes closed and he reached up and cupped her face in his hands, deepening the kiss. Liz moved closer to him until she was sitting on his lap. Her hands were resting lightly on his shoulders.
A moment later they pulled away, staring at one another. "Liz?"
"I'm sorry," she whispered, scrambling to her feet.
"Why?" He stared up at her.
"You and Isabel are..." her voice trailed off and she started towards the window.
Alex jumped to his feet and grabbed her hand. "Liz, I told her no. I don't want to get back together with her."
Liz met his eyes. "Really?" she choked out.
He stepped closer to her and kissed her softly on the lips. "You're the one I want to be with." His arms circled her waist. "Liz?"
She stood on her tiptoes and pressed her lips against his again, silencing him. >
"Liz? Liz?" Maria interrupted her thoughts. "You're doing it again."
She blinked. "Sorry, Maria." She looked at her friend, feeling slightly embarrassed. "There is something I need to talk to you about. What are you doing after work?"
Maria glanced at Michael. "We were gonna watch a movie, but consider it canceled. Is everything okay?"
"Um...." Liz tried to put her feelings into words. "Okay...you know how sometimes you just wake up one morning and like...realize what you used to feel for someone and how you feel right then are different? And then your whole outlook on life changes?"
Maria stared back at her. "Is that a rhetorical question?"
The sound of the bells jingling at the door interrupted her train of thought. Both girls turned to see Alex walking inside the cafe, wearing blue jeans and a long-sleeved navy blue shirt.
Liz felt a nervous fluttering in her stomach as he walked over to them.
"Hey, Alex," Maria said.
"Hey, Maria," he returned, smiling at Maria briefly. Then he turned his gaze to her. "Hey, Liz."
"Can I talk to you for a minute?" he asked.
Liz nodded. "Uh, Maria? Could you cover for me?"
Maria frowned slightly. "Sure." She walked over to the kitchen window and watched as Alex and Liz disappeared into the back room.
Michael frowned and nodded towards where they'd been standing. "What's up with them?"
"I have no idea," she responded.
Liz bit her lip nervously. What if he thought what happened between them the previous night had been a mistake? What if he had decided that things would be too awkward to even be friends anymore? Panic flooded her. She took a deep breath to calm her fearful emotions a bit and turned to face him. "So...what's up?"
"I just...really needed to see you," he said quietly, gazing at her. "I guess I wanted to make sure that what happened between us really happened. That it wasn't some dream."
"It wasn't," Liz said softly, meeting his gaze. Had he wanted it to be a dream?
A wave of relief washed over him. Alex couldn't take his eyes off her. He had an overwhelming urge to kiss her, but he wouldn't do that. Not until he knew for sure that was what she wanted. What if she had decided what happened between them last night wasn't something she wanted to pursue? What if she thought they should just remain friends? He cringed inwardly at the thought. "So...where does that leave us?"
"I guess that's what we need to talk about." She took another deep breath and diverted her eyes to the floor. "Alex, I know how you feel about Isabel and--"
"Felt," he corrected her. "Past tense. I meant what I said last night, Liz. You're the one I want to be with." She looked at him hopefully and Alex took a step towards her, feeling a bit more confident. "But I know what you and Max had was really intense and I don't want to rush you or pressure you in any way."
Liz lifted her eyes to meet his. "I know that. And I don't want to pressure you, either. The past few months have been difficult for both of us. But lately...you've been on my mind a lot. And I don't think I realized why until last night when I saw you dancing with Isabel and I had this urge to tear her hair out."
He grinned. "Yeah, I sort of really wanted to rip Kyle's head off when I saw the two of you last night."
They exchanged a smile.
"I know what I want," he said, his voice regaining its serious tone.
"So do I," she answered.
Alex moved closer to her and gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his hand lingering on her cheek. He kissed her forehead lightly.
"Do you think we can make this work?"
"I don't know. But I want to find out." He tilted her face up slightly and kissed her on the lips.
Liz wrapped her arms around his waist and moved closer to him, standing on her tiptoes. His hands slid through her hair and then began to gently caress her back as they kissed. She was so lost in the emotions she was feeling, she didn't realize they had an audience.
Alex and Liz broke apart and turned to see Maria and Michael standing in the doorway. They exchanged a worried look.
Maria had her arms folded across her chest as she stared at them, a slight smile playing on her lips.
"Guess we know what they were up to," Michael said wryly.
