Summary: A couple of weeks after Destiny, Michael gets a flash about the pod squad reactivating the orbs.
Author's Note: I need feedback!! And Tess is kind of mean in this one, but she MIGHT do a 180.

Note #2: For some reason, I like writing lots of notes. This is the second time this has been posted. It was the first story I ever posted, and I sort of stopped it because I thought I had too many out. Well, now that school's started, I figure I'll have more time to write (you know, when avoiding homework, like I'm kinda doing now *tongue*). So I decided to start this again. The first parts are REALLY short, so I'll be posting them together a lot. And this is going to be VERY long. And I'll still be posting all of my other stories.

And a special thanks to High2Maintenance, for posting it in the "Inspire the Writers" thread, which really got me to do this, as well as WINDYM, mai (you knew I was gonna say that, didn't you, and you said it at the same time, right?), brigittabehr, JasonBFan, behr4me25, keemy007, and last and least...I mean, of course not least *big* El (you're not even here, are you? and we talk about MIA FICS...j/k)

Part 1

The aliens' destiny had been prophesized weeks ago. School had been out for a little while, and Isabel was worried. After Liz had left, Max had stayed in that one spot for at least an hour, staring into space. When they got him moving and home, he had barely spoken two words to their parents, and then went to bed.

He barely came out of his room now. He left for meals, but because school was out, he locked himself in there. Probably staring at a picture of Liz.

Isabel had heard from Maria that Liz wasn't much better. She had cut down her Crashdown shifts, and practically had to be dragged everywhere she went.

Isabel was glad that she and Maria could be friends, with the whole destiny thing. Maria knew she didn't feel anything like that for Michael. The thought of mating with Michael was like the thought of mating with Max. And let's not go there.

Tess had finally stopped coming over all the time when Max was being a hermit. She came over once in a while, but didn't stay long. She mostly told news about Nasedo. Now that her "father" was away for the summer, she lived alone, but she still got calls from him regularly.

Back to the present situation. Her parents, geniuses that they were, had decided that, because Max wasn't coming out except for meals, they would have a family breakfast. At the Crashdown.

'He brought this about himself, really.' Isabel thought. Max sat by her in stony silence. He didn't know where they were going. She couldn't wait to see his reaction.

They stopped in front of the restaurant. Isabel said, in Max's ear, "Well here we are at the Crashdown Cafe. I wonder who will be our waitress; LIZ, Maria, or someone else."

That snapped Max out of it. He gaped at the illuminated spaceship. "We're going here?! You never said we were going here!"

Isabel feigned shock. "What's this? Words...strung together...to make sentences? From you? A great feat for Max Evans! And for your information, we did telll you. You just weren't listening. And there's no backing out now. Mom and Dad are already at the door. I suggest that we move." She got out, and Max followed her.

Liz looked up when the bell rang. She kept dreading (or hoping, she didn't know which) that she would see Max there. Mr. and Mrs. Evans walked in. Close, but not quite. 'Okay. Now just as long as...' Liz's thought trailed off as Max and Isabel reached the door.

"Eep!" she squeaked and walked VERY quickly to the back room. Maria sighed. "Looks like I'm getting this one."

Everything went basically fine, that is until Michael came in. He was very excited and quickly went to Maria.

"Have you seen Max or Isabel? They weren't at their place. Which surprises me, now that I think about it, because Max has been moping in his room all summer."

"How do you know he just wasn't answering the door?" Maria inquired.

"I went in his window."

"Oh. He didn't have it locked?"

"Not THIS time," Michael replied, with emphasis on the "this".

Maria nodded, understanding the hidden meaning. "They're over there, but they're with their parents."

Michael looked at her. "Then we have to get them away. I got a flash. We have to reactivate the orbs. There's another message."

TBC

Like I said, the parts will probably be posted in clusters. Please tell me if you like! or don't like! or don't care!

P.S. the more fb, the sooner the parts come out!

I'm in a very good mood right now so I'm going to give you TWO parts. YAY! Okay, anyway, thank you so much for the feedback, Angela, and redoing season 2 sounded like a good idea to me too.

Oh, and as I forgot to say two days ago, my heart goes out to all the people who lost family and friends in the attacks. To those who did: I am deeply sorry.

Part 2

Liz started to walk into the restaurant. She figured that she couldn't avoid him forever. (Plus, she had done everything she could do to the back room. She had organized her locker in as many ways as she could think of. She had cleaned all the mirrors, and anything else she could. There was nothing left.) She stopped in her tracks when she saw Maria staring openmouthed at Michael. 'Oh no, must be either him saying something to her and her not being able to think of a comeback, or something Czech-like. Hopefully not the latter.'

Maria broke out of her trance and saw Liz coming out of the back room. She waved frantically for her to go back in. Liz, puzzled, obeyed. Maria then turned back to Michael. "I have an idea. Go out the door and come in the back way. Stay in the back room." When he looked at her quizzically, she said, "Just go."

She went over to Isabel and whispered in her ear. Isabel stood up and told her parents, "We need to help a friend with a... hair problem." Her parents nodded, but Max asked, "What's wrong with Liz?"

Maria was startled. "How did you know it was Liz?"

Max smiled. "Because you would only ask Isabel for help if you or Liz needed help, and you're here."

Maria nodded. "RIIIIIGHT."

Max spoke again. "Why does Liz need help with her hair? It looked fine when she came out just now."

Maria smiled wryly. "Max, Liz's hair could be greasy and strewn with garbage, and you'd still think she looked fine." With that, she and Isabel departed. Mr. and Mrs. Evans looked at each other, both thinking that that was the most Max had said at one time in weeks.

In the back room, Liz and Michael were waiting. Isabel said, "Okay, why am I here?"

Maria answered, "No time for that now. You have to dreamwalk Max and tell him to get in here. Michael, you call Tess and Alex. Tell them to come in the back way."

Isabel mentioned, "But he's awake!"

Maria was impatient. "Yeah, but it looks like he's daydreaming. And HE won't block you out."

"Oh, all right," Isabel said, but grumbled under her breath, "But I don't want to see what his daydreams are about." She closed her eyes.

"Okay, Max, let me in..."

Part 3a

Isabel entered Max's daydream with less difficulty than expected. She made sure to keep her eyes closed, and waved away everything so that only she and Max were there. She cautiously opened her eyes. The scenery was slowly disappearing. The only thing she could see was a shimmering Liz, wearing VERY little, starting to vanish. Isabel quickly shut her eyes and said loudly, "Okay, didn't need to see that! Max, make yourself decent so I can talk to you." She waited a second until he said it was okay.

She opened her eyes. "Okay, I'll make this quick. There's some new development; they haven't told me what yet. You need to get to the back room. Tell Mom and Dad that you have to go to the bathroom or something. I gotta go now. Bye." She faded away.

"Max, Max?" His mother snapped her fingers in his face.

"What?"

"You were sort of spaced out for a second," she continued. 'Funny choice of words,' Max thought.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Would you excuse me?"

"Sure, are you sure that you're okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine, just fine." He walked into the back room.

When he got there, he took a quick glance at Liz. She looked fine. Okay, the new development had nothing to do with her. He could breathe again.

"So what's the big emergency?" Max asked impatiently.

"Hold on, Tess will be here soon. We'll explain then," Michael answered.

Isabel wondered aloud, "What about Alex? Didn't you call him?"

"Did I hear my name?" Alex walked into the room, buttoning the top two buttons of his shirt. His hair was wet, and he was carrying another shirt in hands. "Liz, I'm just going to put this in your room, 'kay?"

"Sure," she answered, puzzled.

Isabel stopped him. "not so fast. I'm a little confused. What's with the wet hair look, and did you just change your shirt?"

Alex turned pink. "Yeah. I was coming here to see Liz and Maria, and I was around the corner when I was beeped, 'Crashdown. Back room.' So I got here a couple of seconds later, and walked in the door. Unfortunately, I hadn't looked up, and I was drenched with a bucketful of water. So I went and got my shirt from Liz's room and changed down here. And before you ask why I have a shirt here, Maria and I have been keeping outfits here since, what, fifth grade? It was for our spontaneous sleepovers, and then our endless mud fights. Every summer, after any huge downpour, Maria and I would come here and have a huge mud fight. And we'd have to wear something else while our clothes washed. Which reminds me, it's supposed to rain next Thursday morning. We're still on, right?" Liz and Maria nodded. "Great. Hey," he said, addressing the three aliens in the room, "You want to come?" Isabel had informed him about Max being a hermit, and he figured Liz in mud would get him there.

Liz's eyes widened and Maria gasped. They both thought the same thing, 'They can't come, they can't come, oh, but he'd look so good in mud!'

Max answered, "Sure, I guess I'm up for it," but his mind wasn't on the mud fight. It was going in three different directions. The first was how good Liz looked, shocked at Alex asking them to join. The second was how Alex had been at sleepovers with Liz and how lucky he was. The third was how Izzy would go all ice-princessy and say how she didn't want to get dirty. That was a small part.

But no. Isabel surprised Max by agreeing. Then she sauntered over to Alex. She took the shirt out of his hands, held it up, and waved her had over it. It dried instantly.

"Wow," Alex said, impressed. "If only you could do that to my hair." He said it innocently, in passing, but she answered.

"I can." She started running her hands through his hair, drying it slowly. VERY slowly.

Alex, trying to ignore the hands in his hair, directed his question toward Michael. "Well," he said, hoping his voice didn't crack, "Are you coming to the mud fight?"

Michael pondered. It was mud. He could do mud. If he ever got close to losing it with Maria, all he'd have to do is look down. Mud. He could deal with that.

He semi-grunted his answer. "Sure, I'll be there."

Max looked at Isabel. It took her half the time she was taking to dry Alex's hair to dry her own hair. "Hey Isabel," he called to her, "Isn't Alex's hair dry yet?"

She pulled her hands out of Alex's hair, and glared at Max. "You be quiet, Max, or I'll tell everyone what was in your daydream!"

He flushed. "I thought you didn't see anything!"

"I saw enough," she countered. "No, scratch that. I saw more than enough!" She unbuttoned Alex's top shirt button, and sat back down.

Max was puzzled. "Wait. How much did you watch?"

"Less than two seconds. But that was WAY more than enough!"

'Great,' Max thought. 'Now she's got enough blackmail evidence for the next hundred years.' Quickly changing the subject, he asked, "Hold on. Why did Alex get hit with water?"

"Yeah," Isabel said, "I wasn't out of it THAT long."

"Oh," Liz said, "The mechanism's always up there. All you have to do is hook a bucket of water up there."

Isabel spoke up. "Why do you have a water mech--you know, I don't want to know. But why was ALEX hit?"

"I don't think I was the intended target," he answered wryly.

"Then who was?" Max asked him.

Alex smiled. "I'll give you three guesses, and the first two don't count."

Max sighed. "Tess." 'Sheesh, was that girl the cause of ALL the problems he and his friends had?' He thought a minute. 'Basically.'

Part 3b

"So who set it up?" Liz asked. Everyone turned and stared at her. "What? I didn't do it! I was in the bathroom trying to get Nicole, she's a new waitress, to go and do her job. I got here just as Isabel was finishing her dreamwalking."

"Yeah, I was dreamwalking Max, and I didn't even know the mechanism was there!" Isabel defended.

"Me, either, and I was beeping Alex and calling Tess." Michael mentioned.

"And Max was in the restaurant having his rather, ah, INTERESTING daydream," Isabel put in. She smiled wickedly at Max and he sighed inwardly. 'She’s never gonna let me live that down!'

Slowly four pairs of eyes shifted to the last two that hadn't been defended. "Hello? I'm the one who it got dumped on!" Alex exclaimed.

The eyes shifted to Maria, who was slowly turning bright red. "Maria?!" Liz shrieked.

Michael smiled. 'That's my girl. Too bad it didn't work.' Michael had been finding Tess increasingly annoying. She kept saying that Isabel was his destiny, humans were wasteful, Isabel was his destiny, they had to accept their destiny...It was then that he tuned her out. It wasn't hard. His ears seemed to want to repel that annoying gerbil voice of hers.

"What? That Czech really gets on my nerves. Hey, is there any more water left?"

"Maria!" Liz exclaimed, a cross between shocked and intrigued.

"What? I wasn't talking about setting it up again, though it is a good idea now that you mention it...anyway," she said quickly, as she saw Liz throw her a look, "I was wondering if we had enough water left to give Michael's hair a decent wash. Look at it!"

"Hey," Michael countered. "I think it looks fine!"

"And YOU have no taste!"

"I dated YOU!"

"Yeah, the one time in your life you have taste, you break it off!"

Isabel giggled at Michael and Maria's bantering. They definitely were a pair. She walked up to the two of them, who were now facing off in the middle of the room.

"Okay, enough is enough. Maria, you don't like Michael's hair, that's it?"

Maria nodded, "Well, that and his personality." 'And the fact that he was hatched...' she thought as she remembered her conversation with Liz earlier in the year. Of course, she didn't think she should mention that with the other 'hatchees' in the room.

Isabel smiled. "So would you prefer it like this?" She waved her hand over Michael's hair, and all of a sudden it was sticking up a foot in the air. Maria gasped, and Alex almost fell over laughing. This snapped Max and Liz, who were having one of their patented staring-into-each-other's-souls contests, out of their trance. Their mouths fell open at the same exact time; their faces had identical looks of disbelief.

Isabel looked at Michael, studying him with mock seriousness. "No, I rather like this style," she said as she waved her hand over Michael's head (or a foot above it, as the hair allowed) again. It flattened down and grew down to his chin, where it curled slightly under.

Michael, who was looking in the nicely polished mirror, glared at Isabel. "Izzy..."

"Nah," Isabel decided, "This'll be good." She waved her hand over his head again, and the hair went to his regular spikes, and then it all flattened down.

Michael inspected his hair. "It's actually not that bad, Iz-"

Maria interrupted. "Yeah, it's nice. And it's neat, opposed to that 'run fingers through hair once' look. And-"

Now it was Michael's turn to interrupt. "I hate it."

Max, Liz, Isabel, and Alex burst out laughing. "Do you purposely try to find ways to fight with each other?" Alex asked, doubling over. He knocked into Michael's backpack. One of the orbs fell out.

The laughter slowly diminished. "What're the orbs doing here?" Max asked.

Liz had filled Maria and Alex in on what had happened in the pod chamber. Alex wondered aloud, "Does this have anything to do with the evil aliens you might have contacted?"

Maria, trying to lighten the mood, asked, "Yeah, speaking of Tess, where is she?"

"Did I here my name?" said a voice from the back door. Five pairs of eyes swung towards the door. (Max's were still trained on Liz.) Sure enough, there she was. Miss Destiny herself, Tess Harding.

Angela, hey, thanks for responding so fast. And thank YOU for responding. And I'm in such a good mood, I'll give you another part. Short, unfortunately, but it's still there.

Part 4

"So I'm here, what'd I miss, what's the big 'emergency?'" Tess questioned.

Michael opened his mouth to answer, but Maria beat him to it. "Hello, Tess? EMERGENCY means URGENT. And URGENT means QUICK. Five minutes, maybe, not twenty. Didn't you wonderful Nasedo teach you THAT?" Maria shot out.

"Yeah, well, Nasedo-who is by the way saving our ⊕SSES right now-taught me a lot of things. For example, when I'm going to be seen by my mate (smiles sweetly at Max, then Liz) I should make the effort to look good. Maybe YOU can go out like that, but I wouldn't."

Isabel, like Michael, had been getting annoyed with Tess lately. She was always condescending to the humans who were in on the secret, yet always extra nice to the "Royal Four." 'When she isn't bugging us about the whole "destiny" thing,' Isabel realized. She decided to experiment.

"Hey! I did Maria's hair this morning!" Isabel exclaimed.

Tess stuttered. "I-I-I didn't mean her hair. I meant her...clothes. And...makeup!"

"I did those do!" Isabel was having a ball making Tess squirm.

Tess opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again, and closed it again. She managed to look exactly like a goldfish. Michael, as much as he was enjoying this, cut in. "Uh, guys? Emergency? Remember?"

"Right," Isabel said. "Why don't you tell us the story, since you called the meeting."

"Okay. I got up this morning and I picked Maria's old name tag off the ground-"

"You took it! I knew it! I'm going to-"

"Maria," Max said, in leader-mode.

"So as I was saying," Michael continued, "I picked up the name tag," (he omitted the fact that he picked it up every morning and kissed her name. He had a reputation to uphold. He couldn't let anyone know that if it was too dangerous to be with her, he still needed something of hers to have, to ease the pain. He wasn't going to be put in the same sap-department where Max and Alex were currently residing, even if in some tiny miniscule way, he belonged there.)"And I got a flash of Maria, Liz, and Alex watching the four of us reactivate the orbs, here. There's another message, guys. So I brought the orbs down here."

"Okay," Max said. "Let's try it."

The four got the orbs and went into their pairs. They closed their eyes and concentrated. The humans held their breath.

This part is, like, majorly tiny, I know. It's completely miniscule. If there were an award for the tiniest part, I'd be a strong contender! (Hmm, should think of making one of those...*smile*) But whatever. Anyway, here's the very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very SMALL part 5a.

Part 5a

Nothing happened.

Nothing. Liz breathed a half-sigh of relief of relief. She couldn't stand another message pleading with the Royal Four to accept their destinies. (They had enough of that with Tess)

Michael opened his eyes. "I don't understand. Why didn't it work? I saw it!"

"We believe you Michael," Isabel soothed.

"Yeah. It just didn't work this time. We'll try later. Don't worry, it'll happen some time," Max added.

"But I don't understand. I saw..." Michael trailed off and his eyes widened. "Oh, my god."

Like I said, tiny. Miniscule. Itsy bitsy (spider went up the water...sorry, got a bit carried away). Little little bit. Feedback?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAY!!!!!!! FEEDBACK!!!!!! Ok, since you asked, I won't let you suffer too long. And Angela, what do you mean by "close"? I guess I have to work harder, then. *wink*

This ones a BIT longer. And it does have a BIT of a cliffhanger. Oops. *evil*

Anyway, here ya go.

Part 5b

"But I don't understand. I saw..." Michael trailed off. Max had taken the orb from Tess, and was taking the other one from Isabel. As soon as both of them touched the orb, a bright light shot out of the symbol at the top. "...that," Michael finished lamely.

Michael and Tess just stood there gaping at how Isabel and Max instinctively grasped the orb with their other hands. Liz looked at them. "Michael, Tess, use the other orb."

They picked it up and held it together. Instantly, a light flared up. As soon as both lights had shot up, a hologram of Max and Isabel's mother appeared.

"Hello," the hologram spoke. "Well, hello again, I should say. We sensed that you used the communication orbs before, but, as you activated them by mates rather then by bloodlines, I could not contact you directly. Yes, each current pair is made up of the same bloodline. The leader and the princess are my children; brother and sister. The second-in-command and the queen are cousins to each other.

"I am a bit surprised you could find the orbs. We had sent them in a separate ship than you; when you got there your four guardians/protectors were to destroy both ships. We heard, however, from our allies on Earth, that one of the ships had crashed. We feard it was your ship, but we got word from one of your protectors that it was the ship with the orbs. He said that he and the other three protectors had hidden your pods, and then gone to check out the crash. Unfortunately, the government found them inspecting the ship in their true forms, and two were killed and taken away. He later found out that they had been incinerated, or he would have used the healing stones.

"He and the other protector were taken somewhere and studied. Using his skills, he found a way to escape. He tried to take the other protector with him, but this one was beaten badly, and, as few people from our planet can heal deep wounds and anything life-threatening or larger than a scratch, he could not be healed. Both protectors agreed that the main priority was protecting the Royal Four, so the healthier protector escaped, leaving the other one there. The last time I heard from the one that got away, he said that when he got to the pod chamber, only the queen was there, and he had taken custody of her."

"Nasedo," Liz breathed.

The hologram continued talking. "Our planet is not far from Earth; very close, in fact. Fearing being discovered and tested on by humans (Max shuddered), we learned to cloak our presence. So far, it has worked quite well. Very few scientists have been able to decipher our code and see past the facade of five distant stars in a V-shaped formation. Even so, they have only been able to detect that their is possibly a tenth planet in your, and our, solar system. And as Earth's technology is getting more advanced, so is ours. Soon we shall be able to cloak ourselves completely.

"As close as we are to Earth, this connection will not hold on much longer. Listen to what I say carefully. We have received the location of the pod chamber, where we detected that you set off the orbs the first time. We shall be coming there at your midnight on during the night of the dark of the moon. In the recorded message, we mentioned that our enemies had gone to Earth. They went where you were going, in hopes to destroy you. Since they obviously haven't, we have figured that they are still searching Earth. If we take you off of Earth, they will be able to detect it and, most likely, follow you, therefore efficiently keeping Earth out of any war we may have.

"I, myself, will not be at the pod chamber. Two trusted servants will. This connection is about to break, so I'll leave you with this. Until the day we see each other, I love you. You CAN save us."

By the end of the message, Maria was quietly sobbing into Alex's shirt (making it wet again). Liz was standing frozen in place. Tess was smiling, Michael was standing in awe, and Max and Isabel had tears in their eyes.

Liz shook out of her trance and walked quietly to her locker. She looked and the calendar and gasped/cried out. She spoke haltingly. "The dark of the moon...the next new moon...it's Saturday night...you're leaving...in five days...on Saturday night."

That was all she got out. Then she smacked her head on her locker when she fainted. And Max caught her.

I got three replies! *does little dance* YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm gonna give you guys TWO parts now. Well, they're short parts, but they're still two parts! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, enough exclamation points. Thanks you guys! Hehe, I've entered evil cliffhanger writer territory. Cool!

from part 5B

Liz shook out of her trance and walked quietly to her locker. She looked and the calendar and gasped/cried out. She spoke haltingly. "The dark of the moon...the next new moon...it's Saturday night...you're leaving...in five days...on Saturday night."

That was all she got out. Then she smacked her head on her locker when she fainted. And Max caught her.

Part 6

When Max saw Liz start to fall, his heart wrenched. He sprang to action and caught her before she reached the ground, but not before she hit her locker with a smack.

Max healed her head without a second thought. Just to make sure, he checked her pulse. "She's breathing normally," he said with a sigh.

Michael leaned toward Maria and whispered, "I'm not sure if he's relieved about that, or upset that he can't do mouth-to-mouth."

Maria stifled a giggle. Max sat down on the couch, with Liz on his lap. He positioned her so that she was lying with her face up. He leaned over and started playing with the hair that encircled her face. "Come on, Lizzy, wake up. Wake up, please."

Michael couldn't help it. "You know, maybe you should kiss her and see if the whole Sleeping Beauty/Prince Charming thing works."

Max looked up and glared at Michael. Tess just looked hurt. Maria and Isabel, at the same time, delivered jabs to his ribcage.

"Ouch! What was that for?" Michael asked.

Alex laughed. "Man, even I wasn't stupid enough to say THAT!" he said, and was promptly smacked in the back of the head by Isabel. "Hey!"

Maria told Isabel, "Give him one for me, too," so he was smacked again. "I'd smack you myself," Maria said, "But I have to keep Michael over here in check. I know Izzy can stop you."

"Oh, really?" Alex asked haughtily.

Maria winked at Isabel. Isabel turned puppy dog eyes on Alex. (Does that make sense to anyone other than me?) "Alex, please don't do anything stupid. For me?"

Alex looked at her. Big mistake. "Okay," he agreed meekly. Isabel and Maria smiled.

"Yes! Five bucks, Michael!" Maria said, holding out her hand.

"Wait. You bet Michael that Isabel would be able to get Alex to do something just by asking?" Tess asked.

"Yep," Maria answered, proud of herself.

"Uh, guys," Max said from the couch. "She moved."

"How do you know?" Michael asked, not looking up.

"Because I'm kinda stuck," Max mentioned dryly.

The others looked up and chuckled. Liz had moved her head to the left, and pinned Max's hand to the couch. With her legs on his lap and his hand stuck between her head and the couch, he was sort of hovering over her face.

While Max was talking to the other five, Liz was slowly waking up. She could feel Max's presence almost on top of her. 'This is confusing,' she thought. 'We broke up. Well, I feel a little groggy. Maybe I just dreamed up the whole destiny escapade.' She peered out through almost closed eyelids. 'Nope, Tess is here. Oh, darn it.'

Part 7

Liz was confused. She had closed her eyes again, and realized that her head didn't hurt. She was pretty sure that the locker had been in her way when she fell. 'Oh well!'

She sat up, opening her eyes on the way. She got halfway up when she bumped into a chest. 'Oops, forgot about that. Okay, NOW my head hurts.' "Ow," she muttered.

"Ow?" Max asked. "YOU'RE saying ow? You have a pretty hard head." 'And a PRETTY, hard head.'

'Oh, poor baby,' Liz thought. 'I wish I could kiss his chest and make it all better-no! Don't go there! Stop thinking like that!'

"Lizzy!" Maria squealed, when she finally stopped arguing with Michael and figured out that her best friend was awake.

"Hey Maria, hey guys," Liz said, standing up and rubbing her head.

"Chica, what's the matter? Max, I thought you healed her head!" Maria looked at Max accusingly.

'Oh, that's what happened,' Liz thought, while voicing out loud, "Yeah, but I guess sitting up and smacking my head against Max's chest wasn't the brightest idea in the...to do," she ended quickly.

Michael was glad Liz was awake. He was, really. Really. He knew, though, that they had to discuss the message.

"So, guys, um, are we going?" he asked bluntly.

Well, the parts start getting longer at about 14 or 15, I think. So that's why I'm trying to post in bulk. But sometimes I can't cause I need to leave you guys SOME cliffhangers! lol. So I should post the next three together, and then start posting them one at a time. I'm sorry I didn't post these THREE (yes, I'm giving you three short parts) sooner, but my sister came home from college and it was like "YAY". And, um, yeah. So, now that I'm done boring you with details of my life, here's the next parts.

Part 8

"Are we going? Of course we're going!" Tess exclaimed.

"It's not only up to you, but I for one agree with you. It's the only way to get the answers we want. And we can always come back." Michael said.

"If we're going, I want to tell Mom and Dad."

"Izzy..." Michael began.

"NO, Michael. If I'm leaving I want them to know why. I don't want them to think I just skipped town. I don't want them to be upset. I mean, Max was gone for one night last February and they almost called in the cavalry. Do you want to bring that much attention to us?"

'What night?' Tess thought to herself as Michael grumblingly (is that a word) agreed with Isabel's logic.

Everyone looked at Max for his opinion. "Do I get a veto?" he asked lamely. Everyone smiled tightly. Now was not a good time for laughter.

Max continued. "No, I agree with Iz. IF we go, and that's a big IF, then we are telling Mom and Dad."

Tess had had enough of this planet. If there was a way she could get off Earth, she was going to. She decided to play on what she knew was Max's big weakness.

"But Max," she whined, "We have to go. It's the only way to keep Earth and the humans out of danger and the war that is on our planet. It's to keep the humans safe."

Everyone stared at Tess. They knew she didn't care for humans at all. She was just using it to get to Max. Still, she made a valid point.

Max sighed. "You're right. Put my vote in for leaving." When Liz looked at him in alarm, he said, "We have to. There's no way I'm letting any of you get involved, which you would, in a war, just because I was too selfish to leave the only home I've ever known." He said the last part nonchalantly, but Liz, Maria, and Isabel caught the hidden meaning. By home he didn't mean Earth, or his house. He meant Liz. For she was the only place he would really be home. The only place he felt safe. The only person he would ever love. Anyone could see it. So why couldn't Tess?

Seeing Max and Liz's helpless expressions about their love being taken away, Maria grew determined. She would make Tess understand Max and Liz's love and get them back together if it was the last thing she did.

Part 9

Isabel broke the silence that followed Max's announcement. "I think he's right. We have to go." Silence followed that remark as well. "So when'll we tell Mom and Dad?"

Michael answered her. "If you guys are SURE you want to tell them, you should probably tell them Saturday morning. That way you'll have all day with them."

"Right."

"Whoops. I gotta go," Max said, looking at his watch. "I excused myself twenty-five minutes ago."

Maria took charge. "Okay, Max, Isabel, Liz, and myself can go out through the restaurant. Tess, Michael, Alex, you'll have to go outside and reenter through the regular door. Isabel, I need to talk to you."

Tess, Alex, and Michael left. Maria looked over at Max, who was holding the door for Liz. "Um, guys, you might not want to walk out together. Your parents might get IDEAS."

Max and Liz blushed, which made Maria murmur, "Adorable," under her breath. However, they agreed. Max left first, and Liz left a few minutes later.

Maria turned to Isabel. "We need to get them back together. Did you see them? In the same vicinity as each other, and whammo, they're alive. She's talked more in this one morning than in the past four weeks combined. I am not going to let my best friend regret letting the love of her life leave without getting back together with him. And I know Lizzy. Me, I'm going to try to get through Michael's stone wall and get back with him. And he can't use the 'I could hurt you' excuse, because when he leaves, I'm essentially going to die anyway." She waved away Isabel's look. "And Alex will definitely try to win you back." Maria grinned at Isabel's surprised smile.

"But Liz, she's stubborn. She'll insist that it'll be better to remain friends, or even go cold turkey. She'll figure that she'll have to push him to his destiny, because that'll be the choice he'll have when you go home. She'll give him up again, for good. God, sometimes she's so selfless it's selfish!"

Isabel giggled at the comment, which strangely, in Maria-logic, actually sort of made sense. "So what are we going to do?" she asked.

Maria answered with a crafty grin on her face. "I have an idea."

Part 10

Maria and Isabel walked out of the back room suppressing mischievous smiles. Isabel looked at her table, and saw that Michael, Alex, and Tess had joined Max and her parents. Her parents were on one side, and on the other side Alex sat by the window. Michael sat next to him, and Max next to him. Tess had apparently tried to squeeze into that side of the booth, and was practically sitting on Max. He seemed very uncomfortable with that fact.

"Max," Isabel called to him, barely restraining from laughing at his pained face. "Could you come here for a sec? I need to talk to you."

Isabel giggled at his relieved expression. When he got to her, he said through clenched teeth, "I am your slave for life."

Isabel smiled. "I'll remember that."

"So what did you want to talk about?" he asked.

Isabel's smile widened. "Oh, I didn't really have anything to say. I just decided to help you by getting you out of Tess' clutches. Oh, my suggestion-grab a chair."

They walked to the table and Isabel slid into the booth next to her parents, while Max pulled a chair from a nearby table and sat at the end. When everyone looked at him, he shrugged. "What? It got a little crowded on that side," he said, with a pointed look at Tess. Then he edged his chair over toward Isabel's side a bit.

So these are the last three short parts. After this, they start getting longer. YAY!!!!!

I got feedback!!!! THANK YOU!!! As an answer to SciFiNut111: yes, I'm definitely going to have Kyle in this story. But he doesn't come into play until later parts. But he will probably play a big part in this and the sequel. *waves* Hi Jenan! Welcome! How about this, you give a part of Xan and I give a part of this? Do we have a deal? And of course, AvengingAngelIQ, hi!!!

Also, with these parts, I wasn't the one who coined the phrase "fristers." I'm just using it. *shy*

And these parts are a bit...emotional. So you might want to have some tissues handy. But then again, I'm a total sap, so I cry at EVERYTHING. So you can probably disregard this part of the note.

Here ya go...

Part 11

*Thursday afternoon* (three days after the message)

Isabel walked into the Crashdown three days after receiving the message. She sighed inwardly when she realized that it might be one of the last times she would be there. But she swallowed back her tears. She was on a mission.

She didn't see Liz anywhere in the Cafe, but she did spot Mr. Parker. She walked over to him.

"Hi. Do you know where Liz is?" she asked him.

"Isabel, is it? Evans?" he questioned. She nodded. "Right. Max's sister. The one Alex is always drooling over. Yeah, Liz is in the back room. You can go right in. You know, she's been spending a lot of time back there lately. Are you sure your brother isn't meeting her there?" he asked jokingly.

Isabel smiled tightly. "Nope, I don't think you have to worry about that." 'Unfortunately...' she thought. "Thanks." She walked towards the back room.

Before Isabel went in, she looked through the window on the door. She frowned sadly when she saw that Liz was just sitting there, staring at the place where the hologram had been. Isabel noticed unshed tears shimmering in Liz's eyes.

Isabel pushed the door open. Liz stood up quickly, wiping her eyes. She looked up.

"Oh hi, Izzy. Did you want something?"

Part 12

Isabel walked in. "Yeah. Listen, uh, Liz?" Isabel wasn't very good at the whole emotional scene, but she could do this.

"You know when you first learned our secret, I wasn't really that nice to you. I guess I was just afraid or something, and kind of jealous. And I was mad when you told Maria, because I was really scared that she would tell Valenti. She almost did. And I was always afraid of letting someone in. But when I finally let you—and Maria—in, I realized I could trust someone, really trust someone, other than Max and Michael. And it was strange. But it felt good to have girls to talk to about the serious 'running for our lives' stuff, but then change the subject and talk about boys and makeup. My other 'friends' were just people I hung out with to keep up my image. You and Maria were the first real female friends that I had.

"I think you were the first human that any of us trusted wholly. Even Michael, who I think got a 'humans are the enemy' gene, seemed to warm up to you after about a month. And when he started to let Maria in, it was like a miracle. And I know that you are the best thing that ever happened to my brother."

Through the blur of her own tears, Isabel could see Liz bite her lip and look down, causing her tears from Isabel's speech to hit the ground. Isabel quickly continued. "And for me, it was like I gained two sisters. People I could laugh and talk with, but who I could count on if I really needed them. And I don't want to lose that. I don't want to lose you guys."

Part 13

Liz walked over to Isabel and pulled her into a hug. "Izzy..." she half sobbed, half said.

"But we have to go. And we can't take you with us. But I just wanted to say thanks. You've saved our ⊕sses from the FBI and who knows what so many times, and you didn't have to. You could have just walked away. And I'm sorry I wasn't nice to you in the beginning. I just always thought there'd be more time, you know? And now there's not. Now we're going to leave and I'm going to lose my sisters. I'll still have my brothers, but...a girl needs her sisters, right?"

"Fristers," Liz mumbled.

Isabel pulled back. "Huh?"

Liz smiled. "Fristers. That's what Maria and I call them. Friend/Sisters. Fristers."

Isabel grinned. "Fristers. So I was thinking, how 'bout the three of us 'fristers' have on last girls' night? Tonight, at my house. Maria already said she'd come."

Liz hesitated. Isabel quickly added, "I think Max is going to Michael's or something." 'A little white lie won't hurt...'

Liz took a minute, but her face visibly relaxed after Isabel's last remark.

"Okay," she finally agreed. "I don't think my parents will object; they're not exactly fond of me staying here alone for more than three nights, so..." When Isabel looked at her quizzically, she said, "Oh, that's right, you don't know. My parents are leaving for some restaurant convention thing in (checks watch) oh, about an hour. They're staying until Monday."

Isabel looked at her watch. "Sh!t! I gotta go. I'll pick you up at six, okay?"

Liz protested. "I'll just catch a ride with Maria."

Isabel laughed. "Please. Maria has that TINY car, and you know she's going to pack it full with the many suitcases full of stuff she 'needs' for one night."

Liz playfully hit Isabel's arm. "Oh, like you can talk."

Isabel feigned being startled. "What?!?!" Then she laughed. "Okay, see you at six!"

"Yeah, see ya!" Liz echoed.

Isabel walked out of the Crashdown. She fished her cell-phone out of her purse and dialed a number. "Hello?" the person at the other end asked.

"Stage one is complete."

Hey guys! Wow, I got lots of feedback! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys spoil me! I love it!

Jenan: Pray that the teacher grades on a curve and that no one in your class is really smart. except maybe you. lol. Sure, that part counted for the last three parts. but what about this one? *big*

Like I said, the parts get longer now, so I'm gonna start posting one at a time. *dissapprove* Yeah, I know.

As for part 15, I'll get it out as early as possible. Which would probably be tonight *smile*...if I get feedback. *wink*
And part 15, IMO, is really funny. But that could just be because I wrote it. hmm...*wink*

Here's your update...

Part 14

*Thursday evening*

Isabel and Liz pulled up to the Evans' house at a little after six. They had engaged in small talk throughout the ride.

Liz pulled her overnight bag out of the jeep and asked Isabel, "So what kinds of ice cream did you get?" It was traditional for their Girls' Nights to have the hostess get the ice cream. Each guest brought a topping, some music, and possibly a movie.

Isabel smacked her forehead. "I knew I forgot something! I'll drive to the store now and get some. What kind do you want?" She paused. "Vanilla, right?"

"Double Fudge Chocolate Brownie would be good." Liz answered. Then she smiled. "Or vanilla."

Isabel nodded, understanding the hidden meaning of the statement. Liz had changed a lot over the past year, but she was still basically the same Liz Parker. "Right. So some fudge brownie stuff/vanilla, chocolate, oh and Max said he and the guys wanted cookie dough ice cream." Isabel thought aloud.

"What?!" Liz asked her.

Isabel froze, realizing her mistake. She reached down and turned on the car engine, stalling a bit. She spoke nonchalantly, "Oh, Max invited Michael and Alex over for some male bonding stuff. Anyway, Mom and Dad are leaving for the night, but they should be there now to let you in. Make yourself comfortable in my room. I have some new magazines on my desk. Bye!"

She sped off and didn't here Liz's, "What?!?!?!?!?!"

Liz stared at the retreating jeep for a while, then decided to go in. Maybe one of the magazines would have a helpful article for her. Maybe there would be a "What to Do if the Guy You're Totally In Love With Is An Alien and Is Going to Leave the Planet and You Want to Get Back Together With Him But He Has a Destiny With a Gerbil-like Alien So You Can't."

Liz snorted. Her life sounded like it came out of a soap opera. Or the National Enquirer. 'Hmm...that has possibilities for helpful articles. I should check Izzy's desk for that.'

She walked up to the door and knocked. Max opened it.

She stared at him. First of all, when Isabel had said her parents would let her in, she had expected that HER PARENTS WOULD LET HER IN. It made sense.

The other thing that made her mouth drop open was the fact that he looked like he had just gotten out of the shower. His hair was wet, and water kept dripping down his face. He had on jeans and had apparently just thrown on a shirt; it wasn't buttoned up yet. The shirt hung open, and Liz had a perfect view of Max's chest.

Needless to say, that was kicking her imagination into overdrive. 'Ooh, he looks good enough to EAT! Maybe if I had gotten here a bit earlier I could have joined him in that shower-no! Bad Liz! DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, think about how good his chest looks and how you would like to-stop!'

Little did she know, Max was giving himself a mental pep talk as well. 'No, you CAN'T kiss her! She broke up with you! But her lips look so kissable...no! Shining with that lip gloss...stop! To be that lip gloss...stop it!' Nothing worked. She was wearing a tank top that was driving him crazy. 'Kiss her...stop!' 'Kiss him...no!'

Max finally found his voice. "Liz...what are you doing here?"

Liz indicated her bag. "Isabel invited me over. Uh, can I come in?"

"Huh? Oh, yeah, sure." He moved over and she walked into the house. Once inside, his eyes caught hers in one of their staring contests. Unconsciously, they started leaning towards each other.

Liz looked away first. "I'm just going to go to Isabel's room now. She's getting ice cream. Uh, bye!" She bolted to the room.

Once inside, she leaned against the door. Downstairs, Max leaned against the wall. Simultaneously they thought, 'It's going to be a LONG night.'

Okay, so maybe not really longer. But I promise 15 is! And 16 & 17! And all the other ones I have written! (I'm not quite sure what I'm up too) Speaking of 16 & 17, I think you'll like those...maybe.

Feedback! If I get, say, 3 feedbacks tonight, I'll post part 15! If not, it probably won't come out till Tuesday. Actually, I'll probably post it tonight if even if I don't get ANY, but I'd really like some! *nods vigorously with huge smile* Uh-huh.

Well, I told you I'd probably post the next part even if I didn't get 3 feedbacks, so I am. Thanks Jenan! Jenan: You're welcome! lol. As for the plan, you get that...two parts from now. Aren't I evil? *big*

Anyway, here's the next part. If it's not funny, though, tell me, k?

Part 15

Isabel pulled into the driveway with the ice cream right behind Maria. Maria had seen the jeep coming and was waiting for her. "So how did stage 2 go?"

Isabel smiled. "Perfectly. Did you get the stuff for stage 3?"

"Of course."

"When'll we put it into action?"

"Soon. We better go inside now. If Liz looks out the window and sees us talking, she might get suspicious."

They walked in and almost laughed at the scene that spread out before them. Max and Alex were having an arm wrestling match, and Max held Alex's hand about three inches from the table. Alex was visibly straining, using both hands, and trying very hard to win. Max was meanwhile talking to Michael about the hockey game the night before, oblivious to Alex's struggle.

Maria elbowed Isabel and gestured toward the hallway, where Liz was standing, almost completely hidden by the shadows. She was staring at the back of Max's head, her eyes shining with laughter, longing, and love.

Max and Michael still hadn't noticed Maria and Isabel's arrival, but Alex had. He didn't want to look like a total wimp in front of Isabel. He saw them turn their attention to Liz, who was in the hallway. 'Ah-ha!'

"Liz, come on, join us!" he called to the hallway. This caused Max to turn his head, and Liz to emerge. Seeing Max go into his staring-at-Liz mode, Alex quickly used both hands to win the match.

He stood up and threw his arms in the air. "I am the man! I, Alex Charles Whitman, am the MAN!" He started dancing around the room, causing everyone to laugh at his antics.

Maria smirked. "Funny that the 'man' used to attend Girls' Night. Oh, and remember the time that the 'man' dressed up as-"

Alex turned red. "Maria!" he interrupted.

"Or the time when he-"

"Maria."

"Or when we-"

"Maria!!!" Alex screamed loudly.

She turned to look at him and asked innocently, "Is there something you want?"

Alex looked very frustrated by this time. Max, hoping to get away from the embarrassing stories genre before any of his came into play, spoke. "Oh, Iz, Mom and Dad left already, they said they'd be back by 2, and I had to endure the whole, 'Okay, now, we know there are three boys and three girls here, but be good, no pairing off, no sex, yada, yada, yada,' speech, and they told me to tell it to you. So," he began with a crafty grin on his face.

"Max, daydream..." Isabel said suggestively.

"So, I figure you already know it and don't need to hear it again." he finished quickly.

Isabel smiled. "Great! So I'm going to put the ice cream in the freezer and then we," she said, indicating herself, Liz, and Maria, "Are going to my room for some serious girl talk."

They got to her room and Maria pounced on Isabel. "Okay, WHAT exactly happened in Max's daydream? It seems like it was PRETTY interesting because he turns red every time its mentioned."

"Well..." Isabel sounded skeptical.

"Come on! We'll tell you Alex stories for dirt on Max and Michael!" Maria exclaimed.

"We?" Liz asked, looking at her.

"Okay, just me. Please?!?!"

"Okay," Isabel relented. "But I didn't tell you, okay?"

"Deal."

"You want to know about the daydream? Well, it was his regular daydream, from what I could see. And I didn't see much, mind you."

Liz's mind started reeling. 'Normal daydream? Oh, no, what if Tess is in it? What if he's having dreams of her again and didn't want Isabel to tell it in front of me?'

"Well, all I could tell, before I shut my eyes, was that it involved Max, Liz, and a severe lack of clothes."

Maria's mouth dropped open. "That's his REGULAR dream?!"

"Well, yeah. I used to practice dreamwalking on him, and that dream was a recurring one. Basically ever since 7th-"

"Okay, can we STOP talking about this?" Liz asked, her face bright red.

Isabel smiled. "Sure. And you promised me an Alex story, Maria."

Maria grinned widely. "Okay. Well, when it was, like, the beginning of 5th grade, I think, Liz had a sleepover for her birthday, and Alex and I came. Earlier that morning her parents had given her a, what was it called, Pretty Pink Dress Up and Makeup kit, which came with, like, 5 dresses and some lipstick, blush, and eye shadow. It was a really cheap set, but Liz was really excited about it. She wanted to try it out. So Liz and I each put on a dress and some of that VERY tacky makeup. We started to dance around the room. Alex looked at us; he thought we were having fun, and he felt left out. So..."

Liz was giggling as she remembered the escapade. Isabel gasped. "You didn't."

Maria was laughing hysterically. "He asked! We dressed him up in this hot pink dress with all these white flowers all over it. We put this really dark red lipstick on him, too. Then we put on a fashion show for Liz's parents. They got pictures!"

By now Isabel had tears running down her face. "Pictures?!"

Maria nodded. "Mmm-hmm. We used to use them for leverage whenever Alex threatened to do something stupid. We told him we'd show the pictures to you. But then, of course, he retaliated by saying he'd expose Liz's crush on Max and tell Michael that I wanted to stick my tongue down his throat. But we can show them to you now, I guess, because, well, everyone already knows all THAT! And I just happened to bring the pictures with me!" she finished with a satisfied smirk.

She took the photos out of her bag. Isabel reached for them, but Maria pulled her hand back.

"Nuh-uh. Not until I hear some Spaceboy stories."

"Michael stories, hmm? Oh! I know one! But he'll absolutely kill me for telling. He doesn't even know I know."

Maria leaned forward. "Well, then, we won't let him know that we know."

Want Michael stories? I get feedback, you get stories. It's a win-win situation! lol. Anyway, next part is for Stargazers and Candyclan, mostly. Feedback!!! Next part Tuesday, probably, or if I'm feeling really generous, tonight. Your choice. Tell me when you want it!

Okay, well I already posted this part on the ezboard thing, but I'm going to be posting all the parts on this too. If that makes sense, good. Cause it's kinda confusing me.

Anyway, what I mean is that I will be posting 16, 17, 18, and 19 on this thread, even though I've already posted them. Make sense?

Part 16

Isabel started talking. "Well, okay, you know how we started school in 3rd grade, right? Well Michael didn't really mind you (indicates Maria) then, in fact he referred to you as the 'cute one who hangs out with the girl Max always stares at.' And he wasn't really mean to you."

Maria nodded. "Yeah, I remember that."

"Well, one day our teacher asked if anyone knew what an alien was. Maria, you raised your hand and said, 'Aliens are evil, slimy, green or silver, THINGS from outer space.' I remember looking at Michael, and he looked like he'd just lost his best friend. But then his face hardened and after that he decided to make your life miserable."

"I-I..." Maria tried to apologize.

Isabel looked at her. "I know you didn't mean it. But anyways, soon his hormones kicked and he had to keep reminding himself that he hated you. And I pretty sure he finally forgave you, but he was so used to annoying and fighting with you that he continued. Plus, I think it was his way of flirting. He always said that 'Max's tactic', as he called it, didn't work; you always asked if you had something in your teeth.

"I remember in 8th grade you two had this book where you guys wrote notes to each other. And that was the year that the teacher paired you and Michael as lab partners."

Maria gasped. "Oh, yeah. That was incredibly stupid on her part. Michael was actually there, I remember, it was a large shock. I was really worried because Liz and Alex were in advanced science, and I was in regular. So I was walking along and worrying, not looking where I was going, when I bumped into Michael. My books, and his art folder, I think went flying. When we finally got everything together, we were very late! The teacher decided to make us lab partners, because we were both late. Boy, did that plan backfire on her!

"He stole everything of mine! He took my pen, and he would NOT give it back for the whole period; I had to write my assignment in colored pencil. I got points off for that, too! When I told him that he just smirked at me. He was annoying! And he stole all my books, too. He stole a magazine from me, also. Come to think of it, he never gave it back!" Maria finished.

Isabel's eyes widened. "THAT'S where he got it from?! He gave me a magazine in the middle of 8th grade, saying he had got it for me. I didn't quite believe him, but I had wanted to get that issue, so I didn't push it."

This caused Maria to throw a pillow at Isabel, who quickly retaliated. Once all the pillows were confiscated (by Liz), Isabel continued. "So, AS I WAS SAYING, you two had that notebook. One day, as per usual, Michael stole it. Only I don't think he was planning on giving it back. Finally, after a day or so, Max gave it back because it was upsetting Liz. But did you guys notice that Maria's name had been whited out and rewritten?"

Liz nodded. "Yeah, now that you mention it, I remember Maria complaining about that for, like, a day."

Isabel smiled. "Well the reason they were whited out was that around every 'Maria' Michael had drawn a little red heart. When Max gave the book back, he decided to save Michael the embarrassment, so he whited the hearts, as well as the 'Marias', out. Then he rewrote the 'Marias'."

Liz shoved Maria. "And you said Michael couldn't be romantic. And I told you that was Max's handwriting! Did you believe me? Noooooooooo."

Maria smiled mischievously. "And how did YOU know what Max's handwriting looked like?"

Liz turned red. "I just...did."

"Sure."

As Isabel was saying it, she noticed Alex walking by. "Could you guys excuse me?"

Without waiting for an answer, she quickly walked out. Alex was carrying a tray a food and three sodas to Max's room, so he was walking slowly enough for her to catch up to him. She tapped him on the shoulder, almost causing him to drop the tray. "Can I talk to you after you deliver that food to the pigs?"

He gulped. "Sure."

He was in and out of the room in record time. Isabel took his hand and led him down the hall. She pushed him into a room.

It took Alex a little while to realize their surroundings. "The laundry room?"

"Oh, just shut up!"

"Shutting up now."

"Look, Alex, I just really needed to talk to you about something, and I figured this was the place where we could get the most privacy. So I'm just asking you to hear me out, okay?"

"Okay."

"Alex, you were a really big influence in my life. You were the rock who was always there, whether for comic relief, or for leaning on when things were rough. You were a big part of my life.

"You may notice that I keep referring to my life in past tense. That's because on Saturday, when we leave, I'll be leaving my life behind. But I'll be back for it. I will.

"I am leaving. I know that. I have to. But I am NOT going to leave without making things right with you. Because, although I kept pushing you away, I still needed you. I still need you. I remember telling you a while back that you were different. And you are. You are different, and that's what makes you so special. You're special and you're the only one who can make me feel the way I...feel about you."

She leaned in to kiss him, but he held her back. "But what about your destiny?" he asked, his voice cracking.

She leaned in closer. "YOU are my destiny, Alex. A long time ago, you asked me to let you in. I'm asking you now, Alex, let ME back in. Please, let me in."

"When did I..." his voice trailed off as her lips touched his. He threaded his fingers through her hair, pulling her closer. She opened her mouth a bit, and his tongue invaded her mouth. He searched the recesses of her mouth. She moaned and pulled him closer. She lightly caressed his tongue with her own. "Alex..."

Meanwhile...in Max's room

"What is taking Alex so long?" Max wondered. "He said he was only going to be a second."

Michael, shaking his head, thought, 'Man, the guy has a lot to learn. It's obvious where Alex went.'

Aloud, however, he said, "I don't know. I'll go check on him."

Meanwhile...in Isabel's room

"She's not back yet." Maria mentioned, leafing through a magazine. She suddenly closed the magazine. "You know what? I'll go check on her. Why don't you start making the sundaes?"

Liz nodded and went to the kitchen. She took a bowl and tried to scoop some ice cream into it, but the ice cream was hard. 'Darn!' she thought. She worked on the ice cream, thinking as she went on. Her thoughts inevitably traveled to Max. However, then they traveled to Tess and destiny. Liz started stabbing at the ice cream with furious abandon.

Maria and Michael, while looking for Isabel and Alex, ran into each other. Literally. "Sorry." Michael mumbled, and started to walk away. Maria grabbed his arm. "Nope. We need to talk."

Well, here's part 16. I hope to put up 17 in a few hours.

from part 15

"Michael stories, hmm? Oh! I know one! But he'll absolutely kill me for telling. He doesn't even know I know."

Maria leaned forward. "Well, then, we won't let him know that we know."

Okay, so I figured I'd post 17-19 all together because, well, that way I get the new parts out to you faster.

So here you go.

Part 17

Michael pulled away from Maria and crossed his arms across his chest. "Talk on."

"Michael, you are leaving in two days."

"Yes, Maria. I know that."

"Okay, now could you shut up and listen please?"

He grunted in response. "Thank you! You are leaving in two days and if you were even thinking about using the cold turkey method, banish that thought from your mind right now, mister. And I know you were. Because I know that you're not usually a very vocal type, but when I go out of my way to pass you a "Hi" is not to much to ask! And I know you think you're protecting me by not going near me, but you're not. You're just setting yourself up for me to do something drastic, like run onto the ship after you yelling your name. You're killing me, Michael. Slowly but surely. You brought me to life and you're killing me. Ironic."

Her voice softened. "All I'm asking is that you tear down the stone wall for two days. I'll give you some time to think about it, but there isn't much lef-"

She was cut off by his mouth crashing down on hers. Her mouth opened instinctively and their tongues dueled. Then Maria realized something. For the first time, she was having a flash.

*******************************************************

Liz was taking all her anger out on the ice cream. She ran out of the bowls. 'Bowls, where were they. Oh yeah, top left cabinet.' She pulled another one down and started stabbing at the ice cream again. 'Destiny. Tess. Max and Tess. Marriage. Destiny...'

*******************************************************

Maria gasped and pulled away. "My god."

"What?" Michael asked.

"I just...had a flash." She hit him on the arm. "You ENJOYED annoying me!"

"Well, yeah, but it wasn't the thing I enjoyed doing with you the most."

"And what did you enjoy doing with me the most?"

Michael smiled. "Basically what we were just doing."

Maria grinned. "Well we finally agreed on something."

Michael started pulling her down the hall. "Where are we going?" she asked.

"Well, if we're going to continue doing what we just started, then we should be somewhere private."

"Oh. So where are we going?"

"The laundry room."

*******************************************************

Max was sitting in his room drinking a soda and thinking about Liz. He figured that Michael had probably run into Maria (hopefully not literally) and was therefore not going to be back for a while.

He was in the middle of one of his favorite Liz daydreams when he spilled the soda on his navy shirt. He swore and was about to use his powers to clean it when he stopped. He wasn't really good with getting stains out of colors. With his luck, he would probably end up with one part of the shirt lighter then the rest. He liked the shirt, too.

Max sighed and decided he would clean the shirt the conventional way. He walked over to his closet to find another shirt to wear. He wasn't going to walk all the way to the laundry room without a shirt on. 'Though I'd like to see Liz's face if I did. Maybe she'd-stop right there Evans.'

*******************************************************

Maria and Michael made it to the laundry room and swung open the door to find...Isabel and Alex. Alex's shirt was almost completely unbuttoned and Isabel's normally perfect hair was disheveled. They looked, to put it bluntly, ravished.

Maria, the first to get over the shock, said, "Okay, amateurs, get out of there and make room for the pros."

Isabel looked up. "Amateurs? You called us amateurs?"

Michael answered. "Yes, and she also said to get out."

Isabel's mouth dropped open. "You think we're amateurs?"

"Yes!" Michael and Maria said together.

Isabel couldn't get over it. "We are NOT amateurs."

"Fine." Maria and Isabel looked at Michael with amazement. "It's obvious that there's only one way to figure who the amateurs are and who the pros are."

Alex, finished with buttoning his shirt, spoke up. "I think I speak for all of us when I say, HUH?"

"A kissing contest."

"What?!" the other three yelled at Michael.

"A kissing contest. Maria and I stand over here and Alex and Izzy stand over there. Then we kiss. Whoever can kiss the longest are the pros."

"Accepted." Isabel said. "When do we start?"

"Places?" Michael asked. "Go!"

*******************************************************

Max traveled down to the laundry room with his shirt in hand. When he got there, he had expected to go in and put the shirt in the wash. He had NOT expected to see his sister and her boyfriend and his best friend and his girlfriend standing on different sides of the room, furiously kissing.

Max quickly closed the door and walked away. That was something he wished he could have avoided seeing. Watching his sister make out was something he did not exactly want to do.

He heard some noise in the kitchen and decided to investigate it. He almost laughed at what he saw.

"Liz?"

She turned around. "Max?"

He walked over to her and took the ice cream scoop out of her hand. "Liz, you have 15 bowls and 2 1/2 mugs filled with ice cream. There are six of us. You can stop with the ice cream."

Liz gasped. She hadn't realized she had done that. She had just kept going. She changed the subject. "What's with the shirt?"

"Oh, I spilled something on it, and my powers don't work that well on colors. Iz's better at colors."

"Why don't you just wash it?" Liz asked curiously.

"Trust me, you don't want to go in the laundry room now." Max answered, helping Liz scoop the ice cream back into the containers.

"Oh," she said, a bit confused.

"So can I help you with the toppings?" Max asked her, praying profusely.

"Sure," she said hesitantly.

"So what do we have?"

"They're on the table. Chocolate syrup, caramel, sprinkles, cherries, whipped cream, and...strawberries." she said, her voice cracking a bit. "Can you bring them over here?"

She went to help him. They brought everything over, but Liz had placed the strawberries too close to the edge. She swung around to see if there was anything else to bring over, and they went crashing to the floor.

Max quickly came over to help pick them up. Their hands touched picking up a strawberry, and they looked up. Staring into each other's eyes, they both thought, 'Deja vu.'

Then, suddenly, their heads were leaning towards each other and their lips fused together. Their tongues were tangled and their hands were roaming, trying to be everywhere at once. Max, while still kissing Liz, picked her up and placed her on the counter. His mouth traveled down her neck and up again to her lips. His hands went to hem of her shirt, pulling it up slowly.

"Oh my god!"

*******************************************************

(About one minute earlier)

Maria pulled back from Michael at the same time as Isabel pulled back from Alex. "Liz!" they cried together.

"Huh?" Michael asked.

"We completely abandoned Liz! What kind of best friend am I?" Maria asked, clearly upset. "Izzy, you clean up in here. I'll see if she's okay or needs any help."

Maria walked down the hall, chastising herself for being such a bad friend. She walked into the kitchen and was very surprised to see Liz and Max making out on the counter. "Oh my god!" she cried out.

As soon as the words left her mouth, she wished she hadn't said them. 'You try to get them together, and when they're in the middle of kissing you break the mood. Nice.' Noticing the strawberries on the floor she grinned. 'At least the plan worked.'

Trying to cover up her outburst, she yelled again. "Oh-my-god! I have been made temporarily blind! I can't...see...a thing! I will now feel my way out of the room, while talking...to...myself, because I can't see if anyone else is in...the...room...I'm in!" She then ran out of the room.

Liz, pulled out of the haze she was in by Maria's voice, gasped. "Oh no! You have to follow your destiny! I'm not a part of it!"

Max looked at her. "Liz, no. You ARE-"

Liz said, "NO! I'm not!", very loudly, and then ran to the door, only to open it and find...

"Tess, what are you doing here?"

"I could say the same for you Liz, or, judging by the looks of you, WHO have you been doing here?"

"Tess, WHAT exactly are you doing here?" Max asked from behind Liz.

Part 18

Tess smiled sweetly when she saw Max. "OH, I just came here to see Isabel. May I come in?" She brushed past Liz without waiting for an answer.

Max plastered a fake smile on his face. "Okay, and make yourself comfortable on the couch. I really would LOVE to stay and chat, but Liz and I have to clean up the kitchen." He took Liz by the arm and started to pull her into the kitchen.

Tess stood up quickly, obviously not wanting to have Max and Liz alone in a room together. "I'll help!" she said a little too eagerly.

Max answered, "Oh, no, I couldn't POSSIBLY have you help. You're a guest."

Tess was confused. "But what about Liz? Isn't she a guest?"

Max looked back. "Huh? Liz? No, she's FAMILY." He pulled Liz into the kitchen.

Tess sat back down, pouting. A little while later, Alex and Isabel (now composed) walked into the room holding hands. Tess zeroed in on the clasped hands and scowled a bit.

"Tess! This is a surprise!" Isabel exclaimed, trying to keep disappointment from seeping into her voice.

"Isabel, Al, are you two back together?" Tess asked, with an extremely fake cheerful voice.

Alex winced at the name, but Isabel said smoothly, "Yes, ALEX and I are back together. What are you doing here, Tess?"

"Oh, I came to see you."

"Oh, well you probably should have called first. We're having a Girls' Night."

"You and ALEX are having a Girls' Night?" Tess exclaimed, one eyebrow raised.

"No, me, Liz, and Maria are. I know they're around somewhere. Max invited Michael and Alex."

"Well, Liz is cleaning up the kitchen with Max," Tess said disdainfully, "And I haven't seen Maria."

As soon as Tess had finished saying that, Maria rushed into the room, with Michael in tow. "There you guys are! I've been looking for you everywhere! Don't go in the kitchen! And what are you doing here?" Maria had finally noticed Tess.

"She dropped by for a little visit," Isabel answered.

"Why shouldn't we go in the kitchen?" Tess asked suspiciously.

"Yeah, why shouldn't they go in the kitchen?" Max asked from the kitchen doorway. "It's cleaned up now."

Liz ducked under his arm, which was blocking the rest of the doorway, wiping her hands with a dishtowel. "Yep, and the ice cream is done, too."

'Hmm, looks like someone else got cleaned up, too,' Tess thought, as Liz looked nothing like she had when she had answered the door.

"Tess, I made one for you, too." Liz continued.

'Why is she being nice to me? I'm taking away the guy she loves, and she's offering me ice cream. Did she poison it or something?'

Isabel took charge. "Okay, girls, let's take our ice cream up to my room and get started on our nails." Liz, Maria, and Isabel went and got bowls of ice cream and started down the hall. Isabel, who was holding two bowls, turned back. "Tess, are you coming?"

Realizing that she couldn't keep up her facade of coming to see Isabel without going, Tess followed them to Isabel's room.

After their nails had dried, Maria put the dishes to the side. "Okay, so, Isabel, and Tess, do you know which one of you has stronger powers?"

Isabel answered immediately. "Tess. Well, that's my guess, considering the fact that Nasedo taught her. We've never really tested them."

"So why don't you test it now?" Maria took a razor and started to slit her wrist.

"Maria!" Liz yelled. "What are you doing?"

"Relax, Liz. I cut my wrist and Isabel heals it. We time it. Then you cut your wrist and Tess heals it. We time it again. Then we compare the times. Come on. It's for the sake of science." Maria said calmly.

"But, I...don't really like blood." Liz said in a rush.

Isabel turned to Maria. "This IS coming from the one who almost died."

"Yeah. But PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!" Maria begged.

"Okay," Liz relented, but still didn't seem excited.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! Anyway, Iz and Liz, you guys have stopwatches on your watches, right?" When they nodded, Maria turned to Tess. "You're okay with this, right?"

A little confused about why they had asked, she didn't think they really cared what she thought, Tess nodded.

"Okay, on your mark, get set, start healing!" Liz called.

Isabel put her hand over Maria's wrist, and concentrated on healing it. As she was doing so, she got a flash.

//Flash//

Maria and Michael making out on the floor of the Crashdown.

Michael walking away from Maria, saying he loved her too much to hurt her.

Michael and Maria making up in the Evans' house.

//Flash//

Isabel broke the connection when she was done healing. She had a pretty good idea why Maria had picked the pairings that she did.

Liz clicked the stopwatch. "33 seconds."

Isabel wiped her hand over the razor, and it was sterilized. She handed it to Liz, who groaned and took it.

After Liz had slit her wrist, Isabel said, "On your mark, get set, go!" and clicked the stopwatch. Tess put her hand over Liz's wrist. Almost as soon as she did, she got bombarded with flashes.

//Flash//

Max connecting with Liz.

Max hugging Liz after her grandmother died.

Max and Liz's first kiss on the balcony.

Max telling Liz to take a step back.

The two of them making up in the Crashdown kitchen.

When Maria found them in Michael's apartment.

Seeing the kiss between Max and Tess, and dying inside.

Walking away from Max after finding out their destiny, and how her heart felt ripped apart.

Making out with Max in the kitchen, and Maria running in on them.

//Flash//

Those flashes went by quickly, but Tess saw each and every one of them. She felt Liz's love and devotion for Max. Then all of a sudden, she wasn't feeling Liz's feelings anymore.

//Flash//

Max talking to Michael and Alex in the kitchen, wondering what Liz was doing upstairs.

His feelings about the make-out session in the kitchen, a few minutes before.

His frustration with her and how she kept mentioning destiny.

His utter revulsion to the fact of being married to anyone other than Liz.

The fact that he admired and respected her, but could never be with her.

Overall, through everything, a distinct desire and love for Liz.

//Flash//

Tess pulled away. She just stared into space (excuse the pun) for a minute. She barely noticed the phone ring or the fact that Isabel answered it. Then her face hardened. "WHAT was THAT?!?" she exclaimed.

Isabel, who was trying to talk to her father, asked her to be quiet. "NO!" Tess screamed. "I want to know WHAT that was! Why did I get Max's feelings from YOU?!?"

Liz answered quietly. "I guess it was our connection."

"What do you MEAN, your connection? You're not supposed to have a connection with him! He's my HUSBAND!" Tess screamed loudly.

Isabel, who had been covering the phone with her hand, but apparently not enough, was being questioned by her father about who she had over who was married.

"Hold on a sec, Dad." She covered the phone more and screamed, "QUIET! Tess, you were NOT invited here, and you are now interrupting a phone call, and making the person at the other end VERY suspicious, so why don't you just LEAVE?!? I have tried to be nice to you, and I don't care if you ARE one of us, but you are upsetting me and a few of my friends who have been friends with me a lot longer than I have even KNOWN you! As far as I know, NO ONE in this house wants you here, so you can LEAVE! NOW! I'll see you Saturday night. Have a nice day. Now GO!"

Tess, in shock, just backed out of the door silently. Isabel took her hand off the phone and said, "Okay, sorry about that Dad."

"It's okay," he answered. "Um, is your brother there? I kind of want to tell you both."

"Hold on one more second." Isabel covered the mouthpiece once again and asked Maria and Liz, "Could one of you go downstairs and ask Max to pick up the extension?"

Maria ran down, and a bit later Isabel heard Max's voice on the phone. "Okay, Dad, we're both here, so what's up?"

Mr. Evans took a large breath before answering. "There's been a car accident, kids. Your mother's hurt."

TBC

Part 19

“What?” Isabel asked, her voice harsh and soft with disbelief. Max, hearing her voice, and knowing that she was about to cry, walked with the portable phone to Isabel’s room.

“Your mother and I were in a car accident and it hit her side directly. It was a drunk driver, and he’s been caught. I’m in the hospital right now.”

Max, now entering Isabel’s room, walked directly to his sister and put his arm around her. “How bad is she?” he asked.

“They’re not exactly sure. They’re doing some tests; they think there might be some internal bleeding. They won’t let me see her. All I know is that she broke her left wrist and her right leg in three places.”

“How long are you staying there?” Isabel asked, her voice shaking.

“The doctors want to keep your mother overnight. We were having dinner in Clovis with Aunt Karen and Uncle Larry and they said that I can stay at their house tonight. If they release your mother, then we’ll be back tomorrow afternoon. The nurse says that’s probably what’ll happen. So, since we won’t be back home tonight, no drinking, no sex, no breaking the law, okay?”

“Dad!” Isabel whined.

“What? I know that you invited that cute Liz Parker who Max is smitten with…”

“Dad!” Max said, blushing.

“And that he invited your Alex Whitman, Isabel…”

“Dad!” Isabel said.

“And that you invited Michael and Maria, and who knows what’ll happen when they’re around each other…”

“Dad!” the teens exclaimed together. Liz looked up. What was Mr. Evans saying that made them keep saying ‘Dad!’

“Okay, I’ll stop. Just one thing. Each of you, put your right hand in the air.”

“What?” Isabel asked, confused.

“Just do it. Now repeat after me. I swear…”

“I swear…” they recited.

“That there…”

“That there…”

“Will be…”

“Will be…”

“No…”

“No…”

“Drinking…”

“Drinking…”

“Or illegal activity…”

“Or illegal activity…”

“Or sex…”

“Dad!”

“Say it.”

Max and Isabel sighed. “Or sex…”

Liz looked up at that. Her cheeks turned red and she noticed Max was blushing as well. What were they doing?

“Tonight…”

“Tonight…”

“Or any other night…”

“Or any other night…”

“On or anywhere near this property…”

“On or anywhere near this property…”

“By me or any of my affiliates.”

“By me or any of my affiliates.”

Isabel and Max sighed in relief when THAT was over. Max was still red though.

“You’ll let us know if there’s any news, right?” Max asked.

“Yes, I’ll call as soon as I hear anything. But I got to go pace some more right now and see if I can get any more info from the nurse. See you two tomorrow.”

“Tell Mom we love her.” Isabel said.

“Will do. Goodbye.”

“Bye.” the two siblings said together.

Liz looked up when she heard the two hang up. She watched as Max hugged Isabel. “What was that about?” she asked curiously. “And what was with the whole vow/recitation thing?” She blushed a bit.

Max blushed as well. Isabel answered the second question. “That was Dad making sure we didn’t do anything inappropriate tonight. As for the first question, I think we should have everyone together to answer that.” Her voice shook a little and she swallowed.

The three walked out of the room and into the kitchen, where the other three were waiting. They had seen Max walk quickly out of the room with a worried look on his face. They looked up expectantly for a reason.

Isabel looked too choked up to talk about it, so Max decided to explain. “Our mother…was in a car accident tonight. She broke her leg in three places and her wrist, and they think there might be internal bleeding. If everything goes well, she’ll be out tomorrow. If things are worse than they seem…then…” He stopped talking abruptly and walked out of the room.

“Diane?” Michael whispered. She had been the closest thing to a mother he had ever known. He got all choked up all of a sudden, and had to swallow hard.

Michael’s simple question brought Isabel to tears. Alex quickly went and put an arm around her, and led her to her room, where she could cry, safely in his arms.

Maria could see that Michael was trying hard not to cry, because he didn’t want Liz to see. She took his arm and led him outside, nodding to Liz on her way out.

Liz sunk down into a chair. She put her arms around herself. How could something like that happen to someone so nice? To such a nice family? At least Michael and Isabel had Maria and Alex to comfort them.

Liz suddenly sat up. But what about Max? He had to be hurting just as much as they did, but there was no one to comfort him. Liz could feel the sadness coming off of him like waves, and she knew he needed a friend. Liz stood up, with renewed determination. By Buddha, she was going to be that friend.

So that's all of the posted parts. Yay. I hope to have the next part out on Friday. Feedback please!

I am SO sorry. I really am. First there was the board mess-up and then I just had this REALLY REALLY bad week where I just didn't feel like posting (yes, bad me) and let's all give Jenan a hand because if it wasn't for her I probably would've been awol for a whole lot longer.

But anyway. This is a TOTALLY new part, never seen before (well, sort of), really short part. I'll try to have part B by 10ish, maybe.

I really hope you like it.

Part 20a

Liz walked out of the room and looked around. Where had Max gone? He could have gone to his room, but for some reason she doubted that.

‘Follow your heart.’ The words seemed to swim around her. And she knew. She glanced quickly at the kitchen, and then walked out the front door.

He was right where she thought he’d be. She walked over to the tree and looked up. “Mind if I join you?” she called.

He didn’t speak, but shrugged a bit, so she considered that an invitation. She pulled herself up into the tree and sat on a branch by him. By the tear tracks on his face, she figured he had been crying.

Leaning over a bit, Liz cupped Max’s cheek and looked into his eyes. “It’s all finally hitting you, isn’t it?”

Max nodded, grabbing her hand and keeping it pressed to his face. Liz smiled slightly.

“I know what you mean. After…after grandma died I was just…not believing it. I knew it had happened, but I couldn’t…it took me a day to realize that she was really gone.”

Max nodded again, tears still evident in his eyes. Liz continued, “And, it still hits me now and then. I find something that I want to tell her, and then realize, I can’t. And it’s hard sometimes. But with you…your mom’s still here. She’s going to get better. And if things DO take a turn for the worst, you can always…you know.” Max opened his mouth to speak. “And don’t even THINK of telling me that you can’t. I won’t let you. You saved me, and if need be, you can save your mother. It is not her time. I don’t know how I know this, but I do. And it was a car accident, so they’re injuries that you can heal. That you WILL heal.”

Max smiled slightly. “I was just going to ask what I would do without you.”

Liz frowned suddenly. “I guess on Saturday we’ll find out.”

Once again, I'm REALLY, REALLY sorry. [:(]

Okay, I told you 10ish. It's 50 min. after 10. Oh well. Anyway, this is part 20b. I don't think I wrote it well at all. In fact, I think it sucks. I didn't write the emotions well at all.

But I'm going to let you judge.

Part 20b

“I guess on Saturday we’ll find out.” The words echoed through both of their minds. All of a sudden, Liz slid down from the branch. “I think I better go see how Isabel’s doing.”

“No…Liz…wait,” Max’s voice broke.

Liz froze and slowly turned around. She raised an inquiring eyebrow.

“Look, Liz, I can’t…do this without you. I can’t spend these last days without you. I can’t…deal without you. I need you, Liz. I need you.”

Liz bit her lip and looked downward. Then she raised her head, her gaze laced with determination. “We can’t, Max. The kitchen; that was a mistake. This whole thing; it’s a mistake. I can’t keep making mistakes. You have a destiny Max. With Tess. As for our destiny, it’s apparently to be good friends. JUST friends. And that’s all we can be Max. That’s all we can be.”

She turned around and walked into the house. Max stared after her, a lone tear dripping down his cheek.

***************************************************************

Alex led Isabel to her room slowly. He placed her on her bed and just sat there holding her. She turned in his arms and buried her face in his shirt.

A million emotions were running through Isabel. Fear, loneliness, love. She was falling down the rabbit hole, twisting in a swirling stream of light, the only thing keeping her from whirling into oblivion being the man holding her in his arms.

She twisted slightly, her tears now falling onto Alex’s shirt. She kept muttering one phrase, over and over. “She can’t die. She can’t die. She can’t die.”

And Alex slowly rocked her to sleep.

***************************************************************

Maria had never seen Michael so unhinged. Sure, he had been upset that night at her house after Hank, but that had been different. And when Max had been in the white room, it was like they KNEW he would get out okay. Like he had to. It was inevitable. And something in their subconsciousnesses had known that. And it kept them from totally freaking out. Well, all the time.

But this…thing with Mrs. Evans, it wasn’t embedded in their minds that she would be okay. There was a chance she wouldn’t be okay. And that was hard for Michael. He had always depended on the Evanses. They had been the closest thing to parents he had ever known. Hank hadn’t been a parent, he’d been a…moron. His real mother, as far as he knew, was dead. He didn’t want the only other mother he had known to die, too.

Tentatively, Maria put her arms around Michael. He hugged her tightly to him. “I want Max to heal her,” he whispered into Maria’s hair. “I know I shouldn’t want that, but I do. I don’t understand it.”

Maria led him to the Evans’ large wooden swing. It was intricately carved with rabbits and vines, and it hung from a giant oak tree. She started it moving, and ran her fingers through Michael’s hair. “You should want that. It’s not wrong at all. She’s like your mother, Michael.”

“But I haven’t before…” Michael started.

“Are you talking about the kitchen fire?” Maria asked. Seeing him nod, she continued, “If you think about it, it does make sense. When you heard about it, it was over. Done with. The danger was gone, and you had never really experienced it. So you were pissed because you thought it might expose you guys, right?”

“Yeah,” Michael said slowly.

“Well, now you ARE experiencing the danger. And that scares you. Because she had already come out of it when you found out about the fire. But now you know about it while she’s in the thick of it. And you don’t know if she WILL come out of it. And you want Max to heal her so that she will definitely come out of it. She’s been there your whole life, since you met Max and Isabel, and you’re scared she’s gonna be gone. Forever.”

Michael nodded, tears once again falling from his eyes. Maria put his head on her lap and swung, a few tears escaping her eyes as well.

***************************************************************

Liz sighed in relief when she got into the house. That was the second time she had run away from him. She didn’t know if she could survive a third time.

Wiping her eyes slightly, she headed towards Isabel’s room. She had been sincere in seeing how she was; Liz had a feeling that, while Isabel didn’t break down often, when she did, she probably went a little overboard. And Liz could deal with overboard. After all, she had been friends with Maria for practically forever.

Walking through the doorway, Liz stopped short. Alex was sitting up against the bed’s headboard, a sleeping Isabel in his arms. He put his finger to his lips, indicating for Liz to be quiet. She smiled slightly, and left, closing the door behind her. Leaning against it, she slid down to the floor, her face in her hand. ‘That could have been me, that could have been me,’ she thought, tears flowing down her face.

sorry it's been so long! I really don't know why...but anyway. Part 21a!

Thanks for all the feedback! You guys are just wonderful!

Part 21a

Alex watched Isabel sleep in his arms. Every so often, a tear would slip down her cheek and she would shiver slightly. He tightened his arms around her and wiped her face. He couldn’t stand to see her this upset. It was a little disconcerting to see the “Ice Princess” falling apart. The always in control, always calm Isabel Evans was breaking down, he could tell. She was becoming as undone as when she had dreamwalked Max when Pierce had had him, and he was powerless to help her.

He wanted, no needed, to help her. His heart was screaming for him to do something, anything, to make her smile again. To get her mind off of this tragedy. To make her laugh.

His eyes widening for a second, he thought of the perfect thing. He had brought it to tease Maria, and possibly Liz, with, never thinking that he would actually show it. But he figured that it would give them all something to smile about now.

Slowly extracting himself from Isabel, trying to make sure that he didn’t wake her, Alex lay her down on the bed. He kissed her eyebrow softly. Walking over to the door, he turned back and looked at her. “I love you, Isabel,” he whispered softly, then walked out. And Isabel’s eyes popped open.

Alex walked through the doorway and almost fell over Liz. Stepping over her, she looked up once, tears streaming down her face, and then buried her head in her arms again. Bending down, Alex hugged her lightly, then stood back up and walked on. What he was doing would hopefully cheer her up too.

Seeing through the screen door that Michael and Maria were in the backyard, he stepped outside. Walking over to the swing, Alex knelt down next to it. He whispered something in Maria’s ear.

“What?” she asked incredulously. “You actually still have that and it’s with you?”

Alex nodded. She started shaking her head. “No. no. no. Nonononononono. NO.”

“Please? We all need some cheering up.” Alex nodded to Michael. “Liz is in the house crying her eyes out. Isabel’s asleep at the moment, but I know she’s not much better. I haven’t seen Max yet, but I’m guessing he’s not doing too well.”

“But why do all the cheering ups have to do with humiliating me?” Maria whined. Then she smiled craftily. “Okay, I’ll agree to it on one condition.” Seeing he looked interested, she continued, “I get to show Isabel the pictures of you in a dress.”

The look on Alex’s face was priceless. Maria pressed on. “It’ll cheer her up. Come on!”

Alex thought for a minute. “Okay. I show the tape and then you show the pictures.”

Maria nodded. “Okay, you get the tape and Liz and Isabel. I’ll get Michael and Max and the pictures. We’ll meet in the living room in about five minutes. Good?”

“Yeah, that’s fine.”

When Alex had left, Michael sat up. “What was that about?” he asked, his voice hoarse.

“Come on, we’re getting Max and we’re going to watch a movie.” She started pulling him towards the front of the house. “Max went this way, right?”

Well, I'd just like to say "YEEK!" I just realized that it's been a very, very, very, very, very, very long time. I'm sorry!

I'm reposting 21-22 here, as well as the new 23a. I'm not really that happy with it, but it was sort of transitiony. 23b has a more plot-oriented...thing.

Yeah. Anyway, thanks for ALL the feedback. I appreciate it! So much.

Oh yeah, I really like part 21b. *happy*

And here's the disclaimer for the song (again):

The song in this part is actually half mine. My "wonderful, brilliant" best friend Jenna and I wrote it for two of our friends, and I adapted it, with her permission, for this story. I'd appreciate it if you didn't put it anywhere else, and if it's with the story (why you'd put THAT anywhere else, I have no idea), please put this disclaimer in it. Thanks.

P.S. Yes, my friend is weird. *happy*

Part 21b

When Alex went to get Isabel, he was surprised to see her sitting up on her bed. Her face was to the wall and she was hugging her knees to her chest. “Iz…” he ventured softly.

She turned around and looked at him. “Come on, we’re gonna watch something now,” he told her quietly. She continued looking at him, not speaking. He walked over to her and put his arm around her. He pulled her slightly. “Come on, Izzy.”

Wordlessly, she stood up. Alex handed her the tape. “Here, I’ll be in the living room in a second.”

She walked out, casting one last look in his direction. He sighed once, then knelt down by the door to talk to Liz. “Lizzy?”

She looked up, her face streaked with tears. “Yeah, Alex?”

“Come here,” he said as he hugged her. “Come on, let’s go to the living room.”

Liz shook her head. “I can’t.”

“Can’t what?” Alex asked, knowing that she wasn’t just talking about going into the living room.

“Do this!” she sobbed.

“Do what?”

“THIS! I can’t LIVE like this. I’ve walked away from him twice and I still don’t think I’ll be able to watch him walk away from me. He’s my LIFE, Alex. My LIFE. How will I do this, go to school, work at the Crashdown, do ANYTHING? And I can’t even let myself believe in us, because I know he’s supposed to be with Tess, and I just can’t stand living anymore!” Liz buried her head in Alex’s shirt. “I can’t see him without wishing that we were normal and we can’t BE normal. Ever. I’m never gonna be normal again. And I’m never gonna live again.”

Alex lifted her head up. “Liz, we’ve all been through way too much way too early in our lives, and we all don’t deserve it. We shouldn’t be in love at age sixteen, we shouldn’t be hiding from the FBI, we shouldn’t be losing our true loves after we’ve just found them. We’re teenagers, and we should BE teenagers, not adults in teenage bodies. Life’s happening, stuff’s happening, shit’s happening, and we can’t avoid that. But we can postpone it. We NEED a break, we all do. So just for tonight, don’t be Liz, the girl who’s in love with an alien who’s leaving Earth. Just be Liz, the teenager, hanging out with her best friends. Please, Liz. We all deserve this.” He kissed her forehead and stood up, holding his hand out to her. “Come on, Liz. Come with me.”

She stared up at him for a few seconds, then, making up her mind, she wiped the tears from her cheeks and took his hand. He smiled widely and helped her up. “Thank you, Alex,” she whispered as she hugged him. Then she walked in the direction of the living room.

When he got to the living room, everyone was already there. Maria was sitting on Michael’s lap on the couch. Isabel sat on the floor in front of the other side of the couch. Max and Liz were sitting on opposite sides of the room in easy chairs, but they were still stealing glances at each other every once in a while. The girls were discussing hair (with occasional comments from Michael such as, “Oh, no, that totally dries it out”), and the guys were discussing basketball (with occasional comments from Maria, “Are you kidding? That guy couldn’t hit a three-pointer if he had your powers, and Michael, I know you cheat, so there’s no saying that it wouldn’t work”).

Alex smiled and retrieved the tape from Isabel. He put in the VCR and sat down on the sofa next to Maria and announced, “This picture is brought to you by The DeLuca, Parker, and Whitman Foundation. Please enjoy the show.”

He pressed the play button, and the video began. A younger Alex, who looked to be in about 7th or 8th grade, was on the screen. “Hello, and this show is brought to you by C-Thru. As you may very well know, see-through items are all the rage this season, and C-Thru would like to help you with all your see-through needs. We have the see-through phone, which my lovely assistant Maria is now holding,” Alex announced. A younger Maria, with braces and long hair, was holding up a see-through phone. She then switched to overhead transparency paper as Alex said, “And of course, transparent paper, a great hit with the kids. And who can forget, of course, the well-known see-through shirt.” The scene switched to a younger Liz, who was holding a piece of cardboard that covered her from her waist to her nose. “Unfortunately, we can’t show you this piece of merchandise, but we guarantee you’ll love it, or your money back! Call 555-CTHRU for more details.”

The screen went black and everyone looked at it for a second. Then, simultaneously, they all burst out laughing. “I forgot that part!” Maria gasped. “I can’t believe we did that!”

“Shh!” Alex whispered. “It’s coming back on! This is the best part!”

The picture came back on and showed Alex and Liz standing in the middle of the screen with microphones in their hands. They had obviously put the camera on tripod, because Maria was also in the scene, sitting in a chair on the side, appearing to be tied to it with bungee cords. She seemed very angry, and got even madder when they started to sing.

Alex started off the first verse.

Michael and Maria both think each other vile
But to the rest of us it’s clear that they are in denial.

Liz continued.

We know they like each other but they won’t admit it yet
So with some foresight we have place a tiny little bet.

Alex went again.

My cash is on junior year and also on twelfth grade

Liz:

I’m betting for ninth or tenth and I’m gonna get paid.

Alex:

They can’t see that they’ve been hit by cupid’s loving dart
And when he steals her books and purse he really steals her heart.

Liz:

Mike’s the king of denial and Maria is his queen
They say that they hate each other but we all know what that means.

Alex:

He steals her books most every day and sometimes steals her purse
You’d think it’d stop her love for him but it only makes it worse.

Both:

Maria and Mike! They won’t admit that they’re in like! Duh-duh!

The song ended with Liz and Alex laughing so hard that they could hardly sing, and Maria being so mad that you could almost see the steam coming out of her eyes.

Alex stopped the tape. Everyone was laughing hysterically, himself included, with the exception of Isabel, who was sitting there with a smile on her face. Liz stopped laughing for a few seconds to say, “Hey, Alex, I forgot about that, you still owe me the five bucks!”

Michael looked at Liz and Alex with disbelief. “Five bucks? Is that all we’re worth? Sheesh, you could have at least made it ten or something.”

They were saved from Michael’s indignation by the phone ringing. Max went to answer it while Liz held out her hand to Alex for the money.

A few seconds later, Max returned with the portable in hand. “Liz, it’s for you, it’s your mother.”

“Thanks,” she said, and took the phone. Walking into another room, she asked, “Hey Mom, what’s up?”

Her mother’s voice was laced with anger. “What exactly is Max doing there, Liz?”

Liz froze at her mother’s words. ‘Oh, shit,’ she thought.

Part 22

“Uh, Mom,” Liz began.

“Well? I’m listening, young lady. There better be a really good reason why that boy is at your sleepover.”

“Um, let’s see, he lives here?” Liz asked sarcastically.

“Elizabeth! Why is he there, at your GIRLS-ONLY sleepover, when I specifically asked if he would be and you said no? I’m listening.”

“Hey, Liz, who is it?” Alex called from the living room. Liz groaned inwardly.

“Is that Alex?” Nancy asked with curiosity.

Liz sighed. “Yes, it’s Alex.”

“He’s there too? Isn’t he involved with Isabel? Did your father and I give you permission to go and shack up with your boyfriend while your friends do the same? God, Liz, I trusted you when you said he wouldn’t be there and now—”

“MOM!” Liz practically screamed into the phone. “Look, I don’t want to deal with this now, okay? Whatever you’re thinking, it’s not happening and not going to happen. a) Max and I have been over for months. b) I didn’t even know he was going to be here. It turns out that he invited Alex and Michael over the same night. I had no idea this was going to happen and it doesn’t affect ANYTHING. c) It’s a good thing that I’m here tonight because my friends just found out that their mother is in the hospital and it could be really serious. d) Why are you calling, anyway? You’re at some restaurant convention and you just had the need to check on me? Oh yeah, that’s real trust. And e) I would like to spend a night just being a teenager with my best friends in the whole entire…everywhere… before all the…” Liz trailed off.

“Don’t yell at me! And I’m not ‘checking up on you’, your father checked the messages at home and there was a pretty urgent one from Kyle about some summer report on Czechoslovakia and it’s, and I quote, ‘impending separation.’ He DOES know that it’s been separated for ten years, right?”

“Yeah, Mom, I’m sure he does. He said it was a report on the separation of Czechoslovakia?” Liz asked nervously.

“Yes, that’s what he said. Why?”

“Huh? Oh nothing, nothing.”

“Okay then. Is Diane really in the hospital?”

“Yeah, she is.”

“Is she okay? Well, what happened?”

“She and Mr. Evans went out to dinner, and they were in the car when it struck the passenger side, which was where Mrs. Evans was sitting. She broke her leg in three places, but the real danger is that there might be internal bleeding. They’re doing tests to make sure.”

“Oh, that’s too bad. Is there anything I can do?”

“No, I don’t think there’s anything we can do.”

“Wait, is Mrs. Evans in the hospital?”

“Yes…”

“And Mr. Evans is with her?”

“Yes…”

“So there are six teenagers alone in a house?”

“Yes, Mom, but let me tell you, if we WANTED to do any of the things that you are imagining right now, we could. I hate to tell you that, but we could lie our way through it. I could have told you that Max was here because he forgot something that he needed at Michael’s, but no, I told you the truth. Whenever possible, Mom, I will try to tell you the truth.”

“The thing that worries me, Liz, is the times when it’s not possible.”

“Mom, sometimes, I can’t tell you the truth. For your own safety,” Liz sighed.

“What secrets do you have that could endanger my safety? Come on, Liz. Seriously.”

“More than you’ll ever know,” Liz mumbled.

“What?” Nancy asked.

“Nothing. Just…nevermind.”

“Okay, honey. Well, we’ll see you when we get back. You’re all right at home?”

“Yes, Mom, I’m fine. Thank you for calling.”

“You’re welcome. Goodbye.”

“Goodbye, Mom.”

Liz put the receiver down with a sigh. Apparently, Kyle had found out about the departure of the aliens, presumably from Tess, and had called to ask her about it. The way he had encrypted it was…interesting, to say the least, but smart, considering she didn’t have her own phone line.

She walked back into the living room. Maria and Michael were making out on the couch, Alex and Isabel were deep in discussion, and Max was staring at the television. Craning her neck, she saw that it was paused on the one spot when her face filled the screen.

Blinking rapidly, she cleared her throat. Max immediately looked at her, blushed, and hit stop. Alex looked up. “Who was it?”

Ignoring his question, Liz fixed her gaze on Max. “Never answer the phone again,” she ordered.

Part 23a

Liz flopped into her bed. She’d just gotten home from the Evanses’, and the clock read 10:30. She had probably gotten a total of four hours of sleep. She had three hours until her shift started, so she decided that she should get some sleep.

*********************************************************************

Groaning, Liz hit the snooze button on her alarm. When it didn’t stop, she hit it again. And again.

Why wasn’t it working? And since when had her alarm sounded like a ringing phone?

Figuring it out, Liz shot up in bed. Rubbing her eyes with one hand, she reached for the phone with her other hand. After missing a few times, she finally picked it up. Holding it up to her ear, she yawned, “Hello?”

“Liz?” she heard Kyle’s voice say, although he sounded softer than usual. Cracking her eyes open, Liz instantly saw the problem. Turning the phone over, she asked, “Kyle?”

“Liz, do you know what time it is?”

“What?” Liz glanced quickly at her clock. 12:45. “Kyle, I still had another half an hour!”

“Uh, Liz, you seem really, really tired. Late night? Where were you, anyway? Wait, you weren’t with Evans all night, were you?” Kyle asked, concerned.

Liz rolled her eyes. “No, Kyle. Well, yes. I was with AN Evans last night, but it wasn’t Max, it was Isabel.”

“Wait, you have something going on with Isabel?” Kyle asked.

Liz scoffed. “NO, Kyle. Maria, Isabel, and I had a Girls’ Night last night at Isabel’s.”

“Oh. Okay. Anyway, well, did you get my message?”

Liz looked at the answering machine. “Well, I didn’t actually listen to it yet, but I got the gist of it from Mom. You want to know about them leaving, don’t you?”

“Yes! I had to find out last night from my dad, who found out from Tess, who was asking about…something, I’m not quite sure. I think it was about a cover-up or something. So tell me, what’s going on?”

Liz looked at her watch. “Tell you what, Kyle. My shift ends at five. Why don’t you come over then, and I’ll tell you all about it.”

***********************************************************************

Kyle arrived at the Crashdown at exactly 4:59. Liz motioned for him to go up; she was waiting for Nicole to show up. She told him that she’d be up when Nicole got there.

Nicole finally arrived at 5:13. Liz reprimanded her slightly, and then told her that she was going up to her room.

Kyle was sitting on the couch in her living room. He was twiddling his thumbs and looking rather uncomfortable.

“Hey.”

Kyle jumped. “Don’t DO that to a person!”

“What? The big strong quarterback is afraid of ME?” Liz teased.

“No, the big strong quarterback is afraid of being snuck up on ever since the big strong quarterback was shot!”

“Yeah, well imagine how I feel.”

“True, very true. So…are you going to tell me what’s happening or what?”

************************************************************************

“So let me get this straight,” Kyle began. “Michael got a flash, so he came here, the four of them reactivated the orbs, which gave them a LIVE message from Max and Isabel’s mother, which said that they had to leave Sunday at daybreak?”

Liz nodded. “Yes.”

“And so they’re leaving at daybreak on Sunday, and they’re not taking you three with them because?”

“Because they CAN’T, Kyle. Besides, even if they wanted us to, I wouldn’t.”

“Oh, please, Liz. I know you. I’ve seen you for the past year. You’re trying to tell me that if Evans came over here and looked at you and pleaded with you to go with them, you wouldn’t give in. Come ON, Liz. You’re completely besotted with the guy!”

Liz, blushing, pretended not to hear the question and asked, “Besotted? Brushing up on our vocabulary, are we?”

“Well, it’s been a long summer. Speaking of which, I’ve also been acquainted with a guy named Buddha. Did you know…”

“Out, Kyle.” Liz pointed to the door.

“Just let me say…”

Liz started pushing him towards the door. “Out. Outoutoutoutout. OUT!”

He smiled. “See you on Saturday night, Liz.”

“What?”

“Going out now.” Kyle started to leave.

“Hold on, mister. Since when are you coming on Saturday night?”

“Since now. I want to say goodbye to them too. Evans did save my life, after all.”

Liz sighed. “Oh, all right.”

“Thank you. Now about Buddha…”

“OUT!”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I am SO sorry it's been so long! I've had a bit of writer's block, a lot of homework, just random stuff, and for the past few weeks, when I was going to post again, I have had play practice for horrendous hours. But anyway, I'm here. Finally.

Part 23B

Liz sat on her balcony with a blanket over her legs, looking at the stars. They shone brighter than usual, in her opinion, and every once in a while, one of them decided to flicker.

Gazing at them, she realized that she knew very little about them. She had always been more interested in biology than astronomy, but suddenly she wanted to know more about the glimmering captivators of the sky. The captivators that would be stealing her love in less than 48 hours.

As she reached to pull her blanket up farther, she heard a noise from the alley. Her heart quickening a beat, she stood up, putting the blanket to the side. Would Max really…

Her unspoken question was answered when a head appeared over the wall. But the hair was blonde, not brunette. And it was curly.

“Tess?” Liz asked in surprise.

The blonde pulled herself over the wall. “Yeah. Liz…I was wondering. Could we talk?”

“Uh…sure,” Liz answered, confused about this change of events. The last time she had seen Tess, she’d been yelled at about how Max was Tess’ husband and yada yada yada.

Tess sat down on one of the chairs, and Liz did the same. Tess began to speak. “Liz, I know that we’ve never really been friends…”

Liz mumbled under her breath, “Understatement.”

Tess smiled slightly. “Right. I never wanted to be friends with you because you had Max and you never wanted to be friends with me because I wanted Max. And then when there was the whole Destiny thing everything exploded…”

“Uh, Tess?” Liz asked. “I hate to sound rude, but…yeah, I know this.”

“Yeah, well, the reason I came here is really just to say…I’m sorry.”

“You’re WHAT?”

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for everything I did to hurt you, I’m sorry for everything I did to hurt Max, and I’m sorry for everything I did to hurt you and Max. It’s just…all my life, I’d been told that I had someone out there who loved me. I had a family somewhere. Now, Nasedo protected me and all, but he never loved me and he was never like my family. I wanted someone who would be there for me, accept me, be a confidante, and someone who would love me. Someone who would bring home little things for me just because they felt like it, who would ask my opinions on matters and really listen. I had always been told that that someone was waiting for me. That that someone was Max.

So I came here with high hopes. I’d finally have a family; I’d finally have love. But I didn’t get any of them. I got animosity, I got hatred, I got distrustfulness. And I saw that the person who was supposed to love me, didn’t. He loved you.

I convinced myself that it was just a crush, just something he would get over as soon as he learned about me. He would give up you and come to me, just like he was meant to. But he didn’t.

I’ll admit, I did use my powers to try and seduce him. That kiss you saw…he didn’t want to. I warped his mind. I’m sorry, I really am, but I was driven by a hopeless need for love.

Still, after everything I did, he wouldn’t give up on you two. So you were my last hope.

I’d observed you from time to time. I knew a lot about you. I knew you’d do the right thing even if it killed you. So I waited until we activated the orbs. I knew most of what they’d say, like the part about who we were in our past lives. Trusting on what you would do, I figured that Max would get over you during the summer. Instead, he got depressed and withdrawn. And that made you all hate me more.
Slowly, I was realizing that it was almost impossible to stop your love. The bonds of true love always are hard to break. Still, I wouldn’t admit it. I tried almost everything.

I went Max’s house yesterday, not expecting any of you to be there. You were, of course, and so I had to go upstairs with you guys. I think I know why Maria suggested the healing race; she wanted me to get flashes. And I did.

Those flashes were…intense. Very intense. And they, in a way, opened my eyes. I wouldn’t admit to myself about the strength of your connection, but when I felt it, I had to. That is the first time that I have ever felt pure love. Radiant, true…and returned. It completely filled me, from head to toe, and I could feel it everywhere. And that made me realize…I HAD to realize, that I had never felt that way before. That was the intensity of your love for Max, that was the intensity of Max’s love for you, and comparing the intensity of the love that I thought I had for Max to that was like comparing a piece of rice to a comet. The light that I felt from your love was so bright it practically blinded me, but it helped me to see that I would never, ever have any chance. And when, through your connection, I began to feel his thoughts and his feelings, it finalized it. And I had a sort of, mental breakdown. Everything I had been trying to say to you without saying it to you just came out. But it needed to come out, so I could accept everything.

I want you to know that I’m not just saying this. I really mean it. And when we leave…I’m not going to go after Max. On our planet, I’ll do my duties as queen, not as wife. No one should take that place but you. No one CAN take that place but you. And if there is ever a way that I can help him to come back to you, I will. No matter what it takes.”

Liz sat shocked, frozen in place. ‘Well, I never expected THAT to come from her.’ Tess got up to leave.

“I’m going to go now. I’ll see you tomorrow at the Evanses’.”

She had just reached the wall when Liz spoke. “Tess, wait!”

Tess turned around. “Yeah?”

Liz walked over and put her arms around Tess. “Thanks.”

Tess hugged her back. “No problem. Thank YOU for helping me see that I was chasing a dream that never had a chance of coming true, that I never really wanted. And if I ever find myself feeling the type of love that you two do, I’ll count my blessings.”

“If you ever find yourself feeling like we do, act on it, and quickly. You’ll never know what’s going to happen in the future. This world is pretty dangerous itself, and hey, if your world can give us Michael and Isabel, it must be even worse.”

Tess smiled. “Thanks Liz. Goodnight.” She started climbing down the ladder.

“Goodnight!” Liz called. She watched Tess walk down the alley, then sat back down in her chair. She picked up her journal and began to write.

Dear Journal,

While talking with Tess today, I realized something. I’m never going to be able to stop loving Max, and this separation is going to kill me. But I know I’ll be okay, because I’ll know he’s out there, and he’s okay. That’s going to be what keeps me going, that’s what going to be what keeps me living. The only thing is, I’m going to be living, but I won’t be alive.

***************************************************************

Liz woke with a start on Saturday morning. She looked at her surroundings with surprise. She hadn’t remembered going into her room to go to sleep. She remembered writing in her journal and then, the next thing she knew, she was in her bed, waking up. Confused, she pushed the blankets down until she hit something. It was her journal. She opened it to her previous entry. Under it was written, in writing she knew very well, Me too.

Hey! I'm back! Are you shocked? Yeah, me too.

I was so surprised and happy with all the feedback. I was totally *bounce* hehe...

Anyway, thank you to EVERYONE. I'm so happy people like it.

Oh, and thanks for kurtwel, who reminded me that I hadn't said anything about Diane in the last chapter. Oops.

Anyway, (which I've figured out is my word...I say it too much) this half-part is mostly transition (I think, sort of, ish). The next part is a good one, and I might, hopefully, have it out tonight. If not, it's at least 'til Friday. (unless by some miracle there's a huge snowstorm...*sigh* I wish)

By the way, you're going to kill me. Just a heads up.

Here ya go!

Part 24a

Liz held the phone up to her ear, willing someone on the other end to answer. ‘Come on, come on…’

“Hello?” a voice answered.

“Thank goodness,” Liz breathed.

“Liz?”

“Oh, hey Isabel. I was just wondering, is your Mom okay?”

“What? Yeah, she’s fine, but I thought you knew that already.”

“Why would I know that?”

“Well, I was going to tell Alex and Maria, and Max was going to tell you and Michael. We got hold of Michael on the phone last night, but no one at your house answered. Max went over at around ten to tell you. He didn’t say anything when he got back, and he’s still asleep now, but I don’t know why he didn’t tell you.”

“Oh, I fell asleep at around 9:30, right after Tess left. I was wiped out from the party.”

“Tess went to your house last night?”

“Oh yeah, she came and apologized for everything and was actually really sweet. I think she’s turning around.”

“That’s good. But I must say, it’s about time. Wait, does this mean that you’ll be getting back with Max?”

“Isabel, you’re leaving in less than 24 hours. I don’t know if I would have the emotional strength to let him go if we did anything, and he has to go, so I have to still stay apart from him.”

“I guess…but still…”

“Isabel, please don’t. This is hard enough as it is. Anyway, tell me about your Mom. What happened?”

“Well, they did the test, and there was no bleeding, thank God. They adjusted her leg or did something to it—I don’t really understand the specifics—and put it in a cast. They came home at around six last night. And since then, she’s been having a ball ordering Dad around. I think she’s gonna milk this for all it’s worth.”

Liz smiled. “I’m glad she’s okay.” She hesitated. “You’re still telling them, right?”

Isabel’s carefree tone vanished. “Yeah. Come at around 12:30. That’s when everyone else is getting here.” She waited a beat. “How do you think they’ll react?”

“You’ll be fine, Isabel. They love you. You’re like their own children. A strange background and a few powers won’t make them love you any less.”

“But, Liz, we’re going to be leaving them,” Isabel said. “How will they react to that?”

“I honestly don’t know. What I do know is that they love you and they want what’s best for you. And, seeing as leaving is what’s best for you, I don’t think they’re going to speak against it.”

Isabel sighed. “I guess. Listen, Liz, I have to go. I’ll see you in about an hour.”

“Yeah, see you.” They hung up.

Liz glanced at her journal and sighed. How was she going to deal with seeing Max, knowing that there was nothing standing in the way of them being together anymore, and that he wanted her as much as she wanted him?

******************************************

Isabel looked at the clock on the wall. 12:47. Everyone was assembled in the living room—Diane’s leg propped up on her husband’s lap—except for Liz. Philip was getting impatient.

“Kids, are you going to tell us why we’re all here?” he asked.

Isabel sighed and looked at him. “Could we wait a few more minutes? Liz isn’t here yet.”

He sighed and his wife spoke up. “Before we do start, can I just get one thing straight?” Isabel nodded. “Nobody’s pregnant, are they?”

“What?” Isabel and Max exclaimed together.

“I’ll take that as a no,” Diane said.

“That’s a no,” Maria assured her.

“Good.”

“Where the heck is Liz?” Alex asked. “I’d think she’d be the first one here. It all started with her.”

“What started with her?” Philip asked.

Isabel glared at Alex. “We’ll explain in time.”

“Still, it IS kind of strange that Liz isn’t here. She’s usually so punctual.”

“She’s around the corner,” Max answered, staring into space. “She’s not sure if she wants to come or not.”

“Okay, it is so freaky when you guys do that,” Alex muttered.

“Do WHAT? And how do you know that?” Philip exclaimed, looking first at Alex, then at Max.

Max, not answering, smiled. “She decided she’s coming.” After a second, he stood up and walked to the door. He smiled again and opened it. Liz stood outside, her hand raised to knock.

Max opened the door wider and Liz walked inside. All of the teens, excluding Isabel, looked on in shock as she sat down next to Tess. Max resumed sitting in his spot on the floor.

Philip, not noticing the shocked expressions all around him, spoke first. “Okay, so, now that Liz is here, do we get an explanation?”

“Okay…” Max stood up again, and walked to the front of the room. He started pacing. Isabel, Michael, and Tess joined him. “Where to start, where to start…” he murmured.

“How about how you knew exactly where Liz was and when she would be at the door?” his mother suggested firmly.

“Right.” Max stopped pacing and stood firm, staring at his parents. Isabel and Michael stood slightly behind him to his right, and Tess stood slightly behind him to his left. “Mom, Dad,” he said. Then he paused, taking a breath.

“We’re aliens.”

“Right.” Max stopped pacing and stood firm, staring at his parents. Isabel and Michael stood slightly behind him to his right, and Tess stood slightly behind him to his left. “Mom, Dad,” he said. Then he paused, taking a breath.

Part 24b

Maria broke the silence that reigned after Max’s statement. “And I thought Michael was blunt! Way to be subtle, Max!”

Six pairs of eyes glared at her. “What?” she asked.

No one answered her, because Philip had finally regained the power to speak. “Wh-what?” he asked. Okay, the partial power to speak.

“We—Max, Michael, Tess, and I—are aliens. Extra-terrestrials, ETs, whatever you want to call us,” Isabel explained quietly.

“Is this some kind of trick?” Diane asked.

Liz spoke up now. “I hope not, Mrs. Evans, because if it was a trick, then I’d be dead.”

“What?” Philip asked again. This seemed to be the only word he remembered.

Max sighed. “I guess we should start at the beginning.”

“That would probably be a good idea,” Maria advised. When everyone glared at her again, she sighed. “Okay, I get it, I’ll shut up.”

“Anyway,” Max said, “this all started on another planet, I guess. Um…basically, a race of aliens from a peace-loving planet in the Whirlwind galaxy—we don’t know the name of the planet—was attacked by another group of aliens from another planet, that wanted to take over the first planet. You know, names would be a lot easier. Anyway, there was a war, and the leader, his wife, his sister, and his sister’s betrothed—who was the leader’s second-in-command—were killed.

The leader’s mother was distraught at this change of events. Her son and daughter and two people who had been like children to her had been killed. Working with scientists, they decided to try an experimental procedure. They mixed the essences of the Royal Four with human DNA in four pods. Then, to keep the children safe from their enemies until they were old enough to return, she sent them to Earth in a spaceship. A second spaceship followed the one with the pods; it had two orbs, which were communicators, and four protectors. They were both set to land in Roswell, New Mexico.

The ship with the pods landed without complications, but something went wrong with the second one and it crashed. Two of the protectors died on contact. The other two managed to hide the pods in a cave-type rock, known to us as the pod chamber, and then went back to the crash site to get the orbs. While they were looking for it, the army showed up, and they were taken. One of the orbs was buried, and one was given to the FBI. This all happened in 1947.”

Understanding dawned on Philip and Diane’s faces as Isabel picked up the story. “One of the protectors died while under the FBI’s custody, but the other escaped. He traveled around for about forty years, waiting until 1989, when the pods were supposed to hatch. Then he hightailed it back to Roswell to get the children.

Unfortunately, three of the children were premature, and they broke out of the pods before he got there. They left the pod chamber and went out into the desert. They looked like normal six year-old children.

When the protector, known as Nasedo, got to the pod chamber, only the leader’s wife was still there. She broke out of her pod and he brought her up.

The other three children wandered out in the desert. The second-in-command got separated from the other two, and got picked up by a trucker by the highway.

The leader and his sister, however, stayed together. They walked down the road hand in hand, and froze when they saw headlights. Their fears were relieved when a loving couple picked them up, brought them home, and took care of them.”

Diane opened her mouth to speak when Michael continued the story. “They met up with the second-in-command when they started school. The three of them formed a tight-knit group and made a pact never to tell anyone their secret; that they were aliens.

They worked on their powers secretly, if they worked on them at all. They each had special abilities that distinctly belonged to them, but there were also things that all three could do, like manipulate molecular structure.

The leader’s special power was healing. He was always a kind-hearted person, and couldn’t resist healing things that he could, when it wouldn’t put him or his friends in danger, like a bird.

The second-in-command had the ability to send power blasts. He had the more explosive personality, and the more explosive power. Unfortunately, he was not the best at controlling his powers.

The sister’s power was dream-walking. She could go into the minds of other people while they were dreaming, and observe their dreams as well as communicate with them, if she wanted to. As she developed this power, she found she could go into other people’s minds when they were awake.”

“All was well until one fateful day in September 1999,” Tess began. “While at his favorite restaurant, the leader had to choose between his secret and his true love’s life. Letting his heart lead him, he healed his love, who had been shot.” Everyone except Liz looked at her in shock. “What?”

Liz, smiling, continued on. “He had to tell her his secret, and she told her best friend. All was going well until they got in a car accident. They needed to let her other best friend in on the secret so that they could switch the leader’s blood with the best friend’s, so that the secret would be preserved.

Due to visions that the leader and his love had been getting, the group found the buried orb. All was once again well until—”

“Until the wife and Nasedo came to town and screwed everything up,” Tess continued. “The wife had been told by the protector that her husband loved her and was waiting for her and was destined for her, but this was not true. She became very jealous of the leader and his love, and started using her power—projecting things that are not there and manipulating minds—to try and get the leader. It did not work, however, but it did put a slight wedge in the leader and love’s relationship.”

“Nasedo, who could change his appearance,” Maria said, “decided to take things into his own hands. He knew that the FBI was after the teens, so he changed his appearance to look like the leader, and consequently kidnapped the leader’s love. He was going to trade her—the first human healed by an alien—for all the FBI’s info on the teens.

The leader, however, could not let Nasedo do this. He followed them, and ended up being taken by the FBI. He was tortured in the white room for information.

The three remaining aliens went on a rescue mission with Nasedo. They saved the leader, and got the second orb, with the help of the three humans, who had gotten the sheriff, the teens’ once-enemy.

They ended up killing the man who had captured the leader, Agent Pierce, because he was about to kill them. Unfortunately, the sheriff’s son was shot in the process, and they ended up revealing their secret to yet another person, when the leader healed him.”

Alex finished the story up. “They went to the pod chamber and activated the orbs. From them they got a recorded message telling them that their enemies were on Earth, and informing them of their roles in their previous lives. The leader’s love, upon hearing this, left the leader, and everyone was miserable.

The second-in-command, a few weeks afterward, got a vision of the Royal Four reactivating the orbs. They did, this time by bloodlines instead of by mates. They got a live message from the leader’s mother telling them that they had to go back to their planet at daybreak on Sunday. The leader and his sister refused to leave without telling the couple that had brought them up, so the group agreed to do so on Saturday.”

There was silence following the story. Then Philip spoke. “Wow.”

“So Max is the leader of an alien race, Isabel is his sister, Michael is his second-in-command, and Tess is his wife?” Diane asked.

“Previous wife,” Tess corrected.

“And Liz, you were shot?”

Liz nodded.

Diane turned to Max. “And you healed her?”

Max nodded. “Yes.”

“Do you—do you think—could you heal me?” Diane asked tentatively.

“You’re…you’re not afraid?” he asked incredulously.

“Afraid? Why would we be afraid?” Philip asked, finally getting past one-word sentences.

“You’re our children,” Diane said.

Max rushed over to his mother and put his hand at the top of her cast. Moving it down slowly, he made a slice down the middle of it. He did the same to the other side, and then he pulled it off. Placing his hand on the middle of her shin, he closed his eyes. Slowly, he healed the wounds in the leg.

Looking up, he saw his mother staring at him in awe. He stood up and backed away. Still staring at him, she moved her leg off of her husband’s lap and struggled to stand up.

“Diane, Diane, what are you doing?” Philip asked her.

Not taking her eyes off of Max, she answered, “I want to bow to my leader.”

“No, Mom,” Max said, his voice wavering. “Let me bow to you.” Slowly, he kneeled in front of her and bowed his head.

“Get up Max,” his mother ordered.

“No, Mom. Without you two, I wouldn’t be a leader. Without you, I wouldn’t be who I am today. You are my leaders.”

Tears in her eyes, Liz took this as her signal to go. She made eye contact with Maria and Tess, and tilted her head toward the door. The three of them started moving, taking Michael and Alex with them.

Noticing this, Max stood up. Catching Liz’s arm as she moved out the door, the last in the procession, he stopped her. “Where are you going?” he asked softly.

“You need to have time with your family now.”

“You’re a part of my family, Liz,” he insisted urgently.

“Max…”

Finally conceding, he said, “I’m coming over tonight.”

Looking at him and sighing she agreed, “Okay.” When Max Evans looked at her like that, she couldn’t deny him anything.

Okay, I figure I'll tell you my plan/layout thing for the next few parts. next part should be Alex/Isabel goodbye, then next part is Michael/Maria goodbye, then next part is (you guessed it!) Max/Liz goodbye. Then next part is the actual ship coming and stuff. So that's my plan.

Oh yes. Feedback please! (thought I forgot...I didn't *evin grin*)

Hey! Ugh, this part has been so hard to write. I just couldn't get it out of my head. But I sat myself down today and said, "You are going to finish writing this and post it." So I did.

Anyway, the song used in this part is "What Makes You Different" by the Backstreet Boys. I thought it fit.

And I'm not sure if it's that good. As I've probably said before, I'm not that great at writing emotional parts.

Part 25

It was kind of ironic that on the one day they could spend openly with their parents they didn’t spend openly with their parents. Well, they did spend it with their parents, and openly, as compared to previous years, but their minds were obviously elsewhere. At 11:00, during the fourth game of Scrabble, when Max looked at his watch for the sixth time in thirty minutes, Isabel sighed and put down the letters she had been holding.

“Max, just go!”

He looked up from the dictionary, where he was looking up one of the previous words. “Huh?”

“That’s the sixth time you’ve looked at your watch in the last half hour! Go, please. It’s really annoying and we know you’re not having fun. Come on, she’s probably waiting. I am going to be spending however long we’re up there watching you be miserable without her; PLEASE do not subject me to it now.”

Max looked at his parents. His mother nodded and his father put his arm around her. Max stood up, swallowing evidently.

“Uh…I don’t know how long I’m gonna be at Liz’s…and I’m probably giving her a ride to the pod chamber…so…” his voice broke. “God I’ll miss you so much! You’re…you’re my parents!

Diane stood up and enveloped her son in a hug. “I know, honey. And we’ll miss you too—both of you. A lot. But from what you’ve told us today—you have to go. And I know it’s awful of me to think this, but I can’t help but say…I’m sort of glad you’re leaving Liz, Alex, and Maria behind. This way I know that you’ll be coming back as soon as you can…even sooner.” She hugged him tighter and then pushed him away. “Now do as your sister says and go. That girl is probably waiting for you, and if you stay here a little longer I’m probably not going to let either of you out of my sight until Tuesday.”

Max smiled sadly. “Thanks Mom.” He hugged her again, hugged his father and went to his room. He walked back out with a duffel bag. Turning to his sister, he said, “See you later.”

With one last glance at his parents, he walked out the door.

***********************************

Forty-five minutes later, Isabel threw down her letters once more. “I can’t do this!” she cried.

“Oh, I’ll help you honey. Here, let me see your letters. I’m sure we can find a word in here somewhere…” her mother stated.

“No! Not this…this game! I can’t do…THIS! I can’t leave, I can’t stay, I can’t…I need a normal life! I need some form of normalcy. I need…something! I need…” she trailed off before she could finish, but in her mind the answer ran clear. ‘Alex.’

She stood up. “I’m sorry. I just…I need to be alone right now.” She hugged her parents. “I’ll see you later.”

Slowly she walked into her room. She collapsed onto her bed and put her head in her arms. Her insides felt hollow, her heart broken, but for all the sadness in the world, the tears would not come. So she just lay there, staring at the black void behind her eyes.

She could have been lying there for a few seconds or a few hours; she had no idea. She only lifted her head when she heard a noise at her window.

Though she hadn’t been crying, she rubbed her eyes as a reflex and stood up. Going to the window, she opened it and looked outside. She dodged quickly out of the way as a guitar almost hit her in the face.

Looking at the guitar and back out the window, she whispered, “Alex?”

His head appeared in front of her. “At your service.”

Isabel was so happy to see him she threw herself into his arms, almost pushing him out of the window in the process.

“Whoa, Isabel, honey, gonna fall,” he said, leaning toward her to keep on balance.

She smiled and pulled him into the room. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to see you, of course.” Isabel rolled her eyes at this and they both sat down on her bed.

“No, really,” Isabel insisted.

“It’s the truth, Isabel. I knew Max would be going over to Liz’s as soon as possible, that was pretty obvious, and your parents are new at this. You’re leaving in a few hours and you don’t know how to deal with that. They don’t know how to deal with you not knowing how to deal with it, and they don’t truly know you. And you need someone who knows you. But not many people know you, do they?” Alex ended in a whisper, staring into her eyes.

Looking at him, Isabel shook her head slowly. Figuring he’d better get on with what he was doing, Alex stroked her hair a bit and stood up.

“Now for why I’m REALLY here.”

“I knew there was another reason.”

“Well, technically, it’s still about you.”

“Oh.” Isabel saw him pick up the guitar case. “Yeah, I was gonna ask you about that. Is it some kind of security blanket or something?”

“No,” Alex said, rolling his eyes. “It’s why I’m here.”

“And what does your guitar have to do with me?”

“I wrote you a song.”

“You what?” Isabel asked, shocked.

“I wrote you a song.”

“Alex…you didn’t have…I mean, you shouldn’t…I mean…that’s so beautiful Alex!”

“You might want to wait until AFTER the song to pass your judgment,” he joked.

“If it’s written by you, it has to be beautiful,” Isabel declared.

“If it’s beautiful, it’s because it’s written about you,” Alex assured her.

Isabel smiled sadly and watched him finish setting up his guitar. A moment later, he started to play. Then he began to sing.

You don't run with the crowd
You go your own way
You don't play after dark
You light up my day
Got your own kind of style
That sets you apart
Baby that's why you captured my heart
I know sometimes you feel
Like you don't fit in
And this world doesn't know
What you have within
When I look at you
I see something rare
A rose that can grow anywhere
And there's no one I know that can compare

What makes you different makes you beautiful
What's there inside you
Shines through to me
In your eyes I see all the love I'll ever need
(you're all I need oh girl)
What makes you different makes you beautiful to me

You got something so real
You touched me so deep
See, material things don't matter to me
So come as you are, you got nothing to prove
You won me with all that you do
And I wanna take this chance to say to you

What makes you different makes you beautiful
What's there inside you
Shines through to me
In your eyes I see all the love I'll ever need
(you're all I need oh girl)
What makes you different
Makes you beautiful...

You don't know how you touched my life
Oh in so many ways I just can't describe
You taught me what love is supposed to be
You saw the little things that make you beautiful to me
So beautiful...

What makes you... What makes you different makes you beautiful
What's there inside you
Shines through to me
In your eyes I see all the love I'll ever need
(you're all I need oh girl)
What makes you different makes you beautiful to me

Everything in you is beautiful
Love you give shines right to me
Everything in you is beautiful
Beautiful to me
To me.......

Alex finished singing and strummed the guitar a few more times, with his eyes closed. When he opened them, Isabel was sitting completely still on her bed, staring at the ceiling. He put his guitar back and moved over to her. He touched her arm. “Izzy?” She didn’t move. “Did you…” he gulped, “did you hate it?”

Isabel finally looked at him. “I love you, Alex,” she blurted out.

“Excuse me?” Alex asked, trying to grasp what she had just said.

“I. Love. You,” Isabel said clearly.

“You…you love me?” Alex asked hoarsely.

“Yes. I love you. I love you because you’re wonderful and special and you accept me and see me and you’re the one thing that’s kept me sane throughout the past year. I love you.”

Alex pulled her to him and kissed her passionately. When they pulled away a minute later he gasped, “I love you too.”

Isabel smiled. “I know.”

“What?”

“I heard you the other night. Oh, Alex, I don’t want to leave!” she cried suddenly.

Alex sat on the bed, leaning against the headboard, and pulled her to him, her back to his front, her head on his chest. “Shh…we’ll deal with that later. Right now, you should get some sleep.” He stroked her hair and set the alarm clock next to him.

Isabel nestled into his chest and closed her eyes. Only then did she fully comprehend that this would be the last time she would do this for a long time, perhaps forever.

And then the tears came.

Well, onto the candy part. It's kinda short...but they'll get a longer goodbye at the goodbyes. (which makes no sense).

Here ya go...

Part 26

Maria watched her mother and Sheriff Valenti leave for their date. The sheriff had promised to get Amy out of the house so that she wouldn’t notice Maria leaving the house at 4:00 in the morning. How he was going to keep her out until four in the morning, Maria didn’t want to know.

Realizing she had been staring out the window for over ten minutes, and the car was long gone, Maria sighed and closed the curtain. Moving over to the CD player, she picked a CD case from the pile next to it. She smiled at the cover: “The Whits: Greatest Hits.” She had protested the name for hours; she hated how it rhymed. But the other band members had voted against her.

She put the CD down and picked up the next one. Nodding in satisfaction, she put it in the CD player and pressed play. Skipping to the track she wanted, she waited until the music blared from the speakers. When began singing, so did Maria.

Saying goodbye
Is never an easy thing
But you never said
That you´d stay forever.
So if you must go,
Oh! darling I set you free,
But I know in time
That we´ll be together.

I won´t try
To stop you now from leaving
'Cause in my heart I know

Love will lead you back,
Someday I just know that
Love will lead you back to my arms,
Where you belong.
I´m sure, sure as stars are shining
One day you will find me again, it won´t be long,
One of these days our love will lead you back.

One of these nights,
Ooh! I´ll hear your voice again,
You´re gonna say,
Ooh! how much you missed me.
You´ll walk out this door,
But someday you´ll walk back in,
And darling I know ooh!
I know this will be.

I won´t try
To stop you now from leaving
'Cause in my heart I know

Love will lead you back,
Someday I just know that
Love will lead you back to my arms,
Where you belong.
I´m sure, sure as stars are shining
One day you will find me again, it won´t be long,
One of these days our love will lead you back.

Sometimes it takes,
Sometime you on your own now
To find your way back home...

Love will lead you back,
Someday I just know that
Love will lead you back to my arms,
Where you belong.
I´m sure, sure as stars are shining
One day you will find me again, it won´t be long,
One of these days our love will lead you back.
Back…

She stopped singing when she heard someone behind her. She turned around to see Michael standing there, staring at her.

She stopped the CD player, twirling her hair and saying nervously, “I’m…well, I’m trying to get Alex to put that into one of the Whits’ sets. He’s said no so far…but I’ve only asked twice. And after tomorrow he’ll probably do anything to make me happy…so I’m just practicing…and…”

“He’s an idiot if he doesn’t let you sing that,” Michael said hoarsely.

Maria blushed. “Thanks.” Then, self-consciously she added, “That was a compliment…right?”

Michael smiled. “Yes, that was a compliment.”

They were silent for a few minutes as they looked at each other. Then Maria said, “So…”

“Yeah, so…” Michael echoed. They were silent. Then, finally remembering, Michael lifted up his hand, which held a bag. “I brought some movies.” He handed Maria the bag. “They’re all comedies,” he explained as she looked through them. “I didn’t think we’d want anything dramatic or sad…so I got comedies.”

Maria looked up at him shyly. “Thanks.” She moved over to him and pulled his head down for a kiss.

The thank-you kiss quickly escalated into a deeper, more passionate kiss. Before the pair knew it they were on the couch. “Michael…” Maria moaned as he kissed her neck. Her hands moved to the bottom of his shirt and began to push it upwards.

All of a sudden the warmth was gone. Michael pulled back, breathing hard. “Maria, we have to stop. We can’t do this.”

He stroked the side of Maria’s face. “I don’t want it to be like that. I don’t want it to be because I’m going away and this may be the last night in a long time that we’ll see each other. I don’t want it like this.” He kissed her forehead and stood up. He walked over to the VCR. “So…movie?” he asked.

Two minutes later the video was rolling and the two were comfortable on the couch, Maria enveloped in Michael’s arms. As the previews began, Maria turned and kissed the side of Michael’s neck. “I love you, Michael,” she murmured.

Michael tightened his arms around her as he responded, “I love you, too.” They settled down together to watch the movie as the rain outside began to fall.

One day you will find me again, it won´t be long,
One of these days our love will lead you back.
Back…

What's your fave TV show? (Roswell doesn't count...)
and
What's your favorite type of movie (ex: romance, comedy, adventure, sci-fi...)?

Oh yeah, it's kinda short...

Part 27

Max stood outside Liz’s window, unsure about whether or not he should go in. He was completely confident while he was on the way there, but after three minutes of staring at her window, he was starting to have doubts. Seeing her shoulders start to shake from crying sealed the deal for him.

He quickly melted the lock on the window and opened it. He climbed inside and wrapped his arms around Liz. She turned in his embrace and started sobbing into his chest. He rocked her back and forth slowly, murmuring to her incoherently. Her sobs gradually diminished. Eventually, Liz was silent.

Abruptly, she sat up. Swallowing a couple of times to get her throat to work, she said, “It’s not fair!”

“I know.”

“Of course you know! You’re the only person who could know! But you don’t know!” She buried her face in his shoulder.

“What?”

Liz pulled back and looked into Max’s eyes. “I have been through hell these past weeks, Max. Hell. And even though it’s been really bad—REALLY bad—I know that it’s going to be ten million times worse when you’re gone. Because I knew—KNEW—when I walked away from you that I’d be walking back. It’s in my blood, in my heart, in my SOUL; I can’t walk away from that. Not permanently, anyway. I knew we’d overcome the obstacle that was Tess and get back together and I’d be happy again. But now I’m scared, Max. Really, really scared. You’re walking away from me, Max, and what I need to know is…will you be walking back?” She looked down at the last phrase, her heart willing him to say what she wanted to hear.

Max forced her chin up. “I’ll always come back for you, Liz. Don’t ever think that I wouldn’t. I don’t think anything short of death, and maybe not even that, could keep me from you. When I leave, I’ll be leaving half of my soul behind. And I’ll come back for that half of my soul, as soon as I possibly can.”

Liz smiled, but still spoke. “I don’t want you to feel in any way obligated to come back to me, though. If by some chance you find an alien girl up there that you like, I—”

Max cut her off forcefully. “Liz! There will be no other girl, alien or otherwise. It’s YOU that I love, that I will ALWAYS love, and no one can stop that. I’ve told you before, Tess meant nothing to me…”

“But she should mean something to you…”

“NO, Liz. She shouldn’t…” Max replied adamantly.

Liz laughed slightly. “I mean…she should mean something to you because she’s a part of the Royal Four. I know you don’t love her, she knows you don’t love her…but she IS a part of you and you should accept her. That’s all she wants. Well, now anyway.”

Max looked confused and Liz smiled. “We had a talk last night. We came to an understanding. Let’s just say…she won’t be bothering you anymore.”

Max’s face showed his skepticism. Liz tried to reassure him, “I believe her, Max. For the first time in all the time I’ve known her I can see her sincerity. She’s telling the truth. I can tell. Just…trust me.”

Max smiled. “So…you’re telling me that Tess is no longer a problem?”

Liz nodded. “Yes.”

“Destiny is no longer an issue?”

“No.”

“So what’s your excuse?”

Liz looked at him. “Excuse?”

“Yes, excuse. What is your excuse about us not being together? You always seem to have one.”

Liz looked at him like he was crazy and said, “You’re leaving in a few hours, Max.”

“I know.”

“Then…I don’t get it.”

“Well…it’s just…you always have some reason against our love. And now that I’m leaving in a few hours, as you mentioned, I just want to be secure in the fact that we can be together and will be together when I get back. Unless, of course, you find a human guy here who you fall in love with…” Max’s face darkened.

“What? If there is one fact you need to be secure in, Max, it is my love for you. There will be no other guy. Ever. You’re the only one, Max. The only one I’ll ever love. The only one,” a dreamy look crossed her face, “the only one who can kiss me and make me see stars…”

All of a sudden Liz leaned over and kissed him lightly. “I’m sorry, I just needed to do that. It’s been too long.”

“Liz, it’s been two days.”

“Too long…” Liz breathed, and took his lips again.

They sat on the bed kissing for the longest time, until Max leaned forward and pushed her backwards so they were lying down. Their languid kisses became more passionate and their tongues met at an increasing rate as need took over their senses. Max’s shirt was quickly discarded and Liz’s followed soon after. As his hands met her bra clasp he stopped. Breaking their kiss slightly he whispered against her lips, “Liz, is this gonna happen?”

Liz pulled away further and looked into his eyes. “I want this Max.”

Max nodded and forged onward.

Hey! It's been a while...I'm sorry. I've got this huge project due Friday (I got the music extended to Monday, yay!). It's a video for TV Productions. I'm doing one for my grandparents' fiftieth anniversary, which is next Saturday. And this Saturday I've got Mother's Day celebrations (which reminds me, still need a present...) and a bridal shower (my aunt's having a baby!). And my dad's been trying to put Optimum on the computer and everything is just piling up... Have I ever mentioned that I hate school? Anyway...

I'm here, I'm back, and I've got an extra-long part for you people. Just...don't kill me. Because, you're probably going to want to.

The song used here is "One Day More" from Les Miserables. I changed the names at the top of the lyrics so you could see who would sing where.

And here you go!

Part 28

NASEDO
One day more! Another day, another destiny
This never-ending road to Calvary
These men who seem to know my crime
Will surely come a second time
One day more!

MAX
I did not live until today
How can I live when we are parted?

ISABEL
One day more

MAX & LIZ
Tomorrow you'll be worlds away
And yet with you, my world has started

TESS
One more day all on my own

MAX & LIZ
Will we ever meet again?

TESS
One more day with him not caring

MAX & LIZ
I was born to be with you

TESS
What a life I might have known

MAX & LIZ
And I swear I will be true

TESS
But he never saw me there!

MICHAEL
One more day before the storm

MAX
Do I follow where she goes?

MICHAEL
At the barricades of freedom

MAX
Shall I join my brothers there?

MICHAEL
When our ranks begin to form

MAX
Do I stay, and do I dare?

MICHAEL
Will you take your place with me?

ALL
The time is now
The day is here

ISABEL
One day more

KHIVAR
One more day to revolution
We will nip it in the bud
We'll be ready for these schoolboys
They will wet themselves with blood

ISABEL
One day more

NICOLAS
Watch 'em run amok
Catch 'em as they fall
Never know your luck
When there's a free-for-all
Here a little dip
There a little touch
Most of them are goners
So they won't miss much!

MARIA
One day to a new beginning
Raise the flag of freedom high
Every man will be a king
Every man will be a king
There's a new world for the winning
There's a new world to be won
Do you hear the people sing

The eight met beside the pod chamber in silence. The sky was gray and just beginning to lighten. Unknown to them, the ship was descending toward the chamber slowly. Max, Isabel, and Michael felt a slight alien presence, but the ship had turned on its invisibility sensors, so as not to alert anyone to the approaching ship, including any radar surveillance systems. Though it had been fifty years since the last UFO crash in Roswell, everyone knew the FBI was relentless, and doesn’t give up easily. A security breach was something they could not afford, especially if they were carrying such important cargo back to Antar.

Tess, having been trained by Nasedo, was more in tune with her powers, and she knew what the presence was. Alerting the rest of the group that the ship was coming, but would be descending slowly, so to avoid another crash, she kept her eyes on Max and Liz. Something was different between them, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. It was something about the way she clung to his hand and the way he was looking at her. It was probably just something about them leaving.

At Tess’ announcement, everyone began shuffling toward each other. Isabel and Liz were the first to reach each other. They stood looking at each other for a few seconds before Isabel pulled Liz into a hug. “I think we’ve said it all already, haven’t we?” she whispered in Liz’s ear.

“Yeah,” Liz nodded. “Fris.”

Isabel pulled back and stuck her tongue out. “Ditto.”

Liz’s eyes wandered over toward Max, who was at the moment saying goodbye to Maria. “Watch out for him, will you?” she asked.

Isabel followed Liz’s eyes, and then looked to her left, to where Alex and Tess were saying their farewells. “All I ask is that you do the same for me.”

“With my life,” Liz told her. They hugged again, and separated.

******************************************

Max hugged Maria and kissed her on the cheek. “I am going to tell you that I’m mad at you in advance, for the agony you’re going to be putting me through with Michael. He is seriously going to go completely nuts, and I personally don’t want my head blown off. Literally.” He smiled.

Maria rolled her eyes and looked at Liz. “Are you kidding? You’re going to be mad at me? I’m going to have to deal with ‘Mopey Liz’ for who knows how long. And I thought the past few weeks have been horrible!” She glanced at Max and immediately was sorry for what she said. “I’m sorry, Max. I know this is going to be hard for both of you—all of us—but it’s what you have to do. You guys can’t change it. Don’t beat yourself up about it.”

“I know, but…”

“But nothing. Oh, come here,” Maria pulled Max into another hug. “Now go to the next one. Before I start crying or something.”

Max grinned. “Aye, aye.”

******************************************

Alex and Tess stood next to each other uncomfortably. After a few moments of silence, they both spoke. “Look Tess…”

“Look, Alex…”

They looked at each other and laughed. “You go first,” Alex said.

“Okay.” Tess paused. “Look, I know I haven’t been the best of friends with you; in fact, I tried to steal your best friend’s boyfriend and I always treated you like dirt. So I just want to say that I’m sorry, I really am, and I’m not going to be doing that anymore. You’re a great asset to the group, and you’re really smart…and you’re great for Isabel. You love her, I can tell.”

Alex smiled. “Yeah, I do. I never truly understood her, though. I mean, she’s female, she’s an alien, that’s about the complete opposite of me. When you came to town, I thought it would be great, she’d have an alien who knows what she’s talking about. But we weren’t sure who exactly you were, and whether or not you were on our side. And when you started going for Max… We never let you in our group. We’re slow to trust; that’s one of our problems. We have to work on that. Anyway, I sort of wish I could have gotten to know you better. When you weren’t in the vicinity of Max or talking about him, you almost seemed…nice. And now that you’ve gotten over that…well, good luck.”

He hugged her quickly and they moved on.

******************************************

“So…” Kyle said.

“So…” Michael echoed.

“Well, Guerin, I don’t really know you. All I really know is you’re an alien and you’re making sis happy. So I guess I’m okay with you.”

“Hold on. Who’s ‘sis’?” Michael asked, confused.

Kyle smiled. “Ria, of course! Since Dad and Amy started dating, I’ve taken to calling her sis. Annoys the heck out of her.”

Michael raised his eyebrows. “Okay… Well, look after ‘sis’, will ya?”

“Course.” They shook hands.

“So…”

“So…”

******************************************

Liz hugged Tess. “You’re gonna come back, right?”

Tess sighed. “If I can.”

“Try. And hey, keep an eye on Max for me. Make sure none of those alien girls try to steal him from me.”

Tess hugged her tighter and whispered in her ear, “Don’t worry. He’s only ever had eyes for you.”

******************************************

“See you, blondie,” Isabel said as she hugged Maria.

“Hey! Watch who you’re calling blondie!”

“What are you gonna do? Kill me?”

“I could try!”

“I have powers.”

“I have…I have… I have the ability to talk really fast and confuse people because they have no idea why I’m talking really fast or what I’m talking about when in fact I’m talking about nothing in particular so it would make no sense even if I was talking slowly!” Maria said quickly, smiling superiorly.

“You do that.” Isabel’s smile faded. “Take care of yourself.”

“You too! And don’t go getting betrothed to my man.”

Isabel looked over at Michael. “Don’t worry. He’s all yours.”

“Hey!” Maria yelled.

******************************************

“Well, we haven’t exactly been the best of friends…” Max started saying.

Kyle snorted. “Please. We haven’t even been close to friends. First there was you being jealous of me and Liz.”

“I wasn’t…”

“Don’t even try denying it. Then there was me being jealous of you and Liz. And then I almost got you killed. And then you saved my life. Does this add up to you?”

“Sure.”

“How? Why did you save my life after all I had done to hurt you?”

“Same reason I did Liz’s.”

Kyle gasped. “You’re in love with me?”

“NO!” Max was adamant. “I had to.”

“You had to?”

“I don’t know…something told me it wasn’t your time to go.”

“Whatever, man. Thanks anyway.”

“You’re welcome.”

******************************************

“So here we are,” Alex stated.

“Yeah,” Michael said.

“You know, I never thought I’d be here, waiting for an alien spaceship to come and take some of my best friends away.”

“Yeah, I never pictured you here either.”

“Thanks, Michael.”

“Hey, I said I never pictured you here. That doesn’t mean I’m not glad you are.”

“Why are you glad I’m here?”

“Because. You’ve been a good friend to all of us. You’ve been loyal. And you’ve helped Izzy so much…you two are great together.”

“Funny, you’re the second person who’s said that to me in the past few minutes.”

“I’m the second person you talked to.”

Alex smiled. “Yeah. Wonder if it’s a sign or something.”

“Whatever Whitman.”

******************************************

Liz hugged Michael tightly. He tentatively put his arms around her. “Uh…Liz?”

“Yeah?” she asked.

“I think the planet we’re going to would like a LIVE second-in-command.”

“Oh.” She loosened her grip.

“I want to thank you, Liz.”

“For what?”

“For always being there. For helping when we needed it. For always stepping up to whatever challenge there was.”

Liz shook her head. “Not always.”

“What are you…hey, are you still worrying about that? I’m fine, I don’t hold it against you. You were scared. It’s fine to be scared. Heck, I was scared and I was in a cocoon thing.”

“But I should have…”

“But nothing. And you’ve made up for it, time and time again. I really don’t blame you for it. If it had been you under that cocoon and the only reason we could think of for you being there was because Max kissed you, I’d be scared to death for Maria. I don’t know, if that had happened, if I could have participated in the ritual. It’s human nature to be scared.” Michael chuckled a bit. “Hey, I guess we’ve found a little human in me after all.”

Liz hugged Michael tightly again. “Thanks, Michael. I’ll miss you.”

“Liz…breathing usually helps…”

“Oh, sorry.”

******************************************

Max opened his mouth to speak, but Alex stopped him. “Let me guess. Are you by any chance going to tell me that I’m good for Izzy?”

Max closed his mouth. “Well…no.”

Alex frowned. “Oh.”

“I mean, I wasn’t PLANNING on it. It might have come up, and, well, you are, but…”

“Ha!” Alex exclaimed. “Three out of three! It IS a sign!”

“Okay, yeah, what are you talking about?”

“Oh, nothing, nevermind.”

“Okay…look, what I really wanted to do is to thank you for saving my life.”

“Huh? When have I saved your life?”

“In the hospital…after the car accident. You gave your blood and exchanged it for mine. Without you I probably would have been brought in and tested on, and…”

“Uh, newsflash Max. You WERE brought in and tested on.”

“Yes, but it would have happened a lot earlier and a lot more publicly. And then we wouldn’t have had Tess’ powers and you might not have been able to get me out of the facility.”

“Well, I guess. And, in that case, I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?”

“For thinking you were on drugs.”

“You thought we were on drugs?”

“It was the only thing I could think of!” Alex explained.

Max shook his head. “Well, I guess we were lucky you didn’t have an imagination.”

“Hey!”

******************************************

Isabel hugged Kyle. “I’m sorry.”

“What?”

“For all the times I thought you were a complete idiot who was going to ruin our lives.”

“Well, in a way I kind of did…” Kyle said guiltily.

“No you didn’t.”

“Yes I did.”

“No you didn’t.”

“Yes I did.”

“No you didn’t!”

“Yes I…”

“Kyle, do yourself a favor and just agree with me on this!”

“Yes ma’am.”

“I mean, you took to us being aliens so well…”

“I wouldn’t exactly say ‘well’…” Kyle muttered.

“And now you can accept us for who we really are. So far you’re the second human guy I know who hasn’t just looked at me as just a hot human chick who’s probably going to be a good lay.”

“Well if it’s any consolation, I think you’re a hot alien chick.”

“Kyle!”

“What?”

******************************************

“Maria…” Tess said hesitantly.

“Yeah?”

“You know I don’t want Max anymore, right?”

“Yes, I’ve heard.”

“And you don’t hate me anymore, do you?”

“I’ve gotten over it.”

“So…”

“So, yeah, I forgive you.”

Tess let out a breath. “Whew.”

“But if I ever hear you trying to go get Max again…”

“I know, I know. My tombstone will say ‘Death by Maria.’”

“Exactly!” The two of them laughed. Then they sobered.

Maria made the first move and hugged Tess. “You know, now that you’re not a bitch, I think I’m actually gonna miss you.”

Tess smiled. “Ditto.”

******************************************

They reverted back to their original couples. Max and Liz immediately latched onto each other, and Michael and Maria were soon devouring each other as well. Isabel just cried into Alex’s neck. Tess stood awkwardly next to Kyle.

Kyle looked at the three couples and then at Tess. He pulled her into a hug. “We’ll miss you, little one.”

Tess smiled into his chest. “Same to you.”

The ship landed unnoticed by all but Kyle and Tess. Two shadows descended from it and started walking toward the eight. As the shadows came closer, they realized that they belonged to a man of about seventy and a woman in her early thirties. They stopped a few feet short of the group and bowed.

By the time they straightened, the only ones not paying attention to them were Max and Liz. The two strangers looked at them amusedly and the man addressed the others.

“Hello, I am Moland. This is my daughter Teriana. We’re here to take the Royal Four back to Antar…unless they are otherwise detained,” he said, glancing at Max and Liz.

Maria leaned over and nudged Liz. She broke away from the kiss and moaned, realizing it would be one of the last kisses she shared with Max for probably a very long time.

Teriana gasped at the sight of their faces. “Father, they look exactly the same as last time!”

So...confused? Angry? About to throw a potted geranium at my head? (if there happens to be one near the computer...)

Anyway, I will post the next part when I can. PLEASE give me feedback! I strive on it...I live on it...it is my air! *wink* Anyway, I think you get the picture.

Hey! I'm back! Are you surprised? I am.

Don't you just love it when teachers give you hardly any homework? But it's enough to make you want to avoid it? I came online and I just (literally) got inspired by all the feedback and sat down and wrote chapter 29.

Thank you to all feedbackers!

Just to clarify, Teriana was talking to Liz and Max. And she wasn't born until after everything.

Oh yes, and the name Elenna comes from another fic of mine about their past lives. Not that you need to know that. Just a little tidbit.

Oh, and if you thought the LAST cliffhanger was bad...

Part 29

Everyone looked at Teriana in shock. Liz opened her mouth, but no words came out. She waited a few moments, swallowed, and then opened her mouth. “No…no…I think you’ve got me confused with someone else. I’m…I’m human. I don’t…know you.”

Teriana shook her head. “No, Father, tell them. Why do you have their picture anyway? And who are the others? I recognize the two of them, but that’s it.”

Moland sighed deeply. He gestured to Michael. “The second-in-command.” He pointed to Isabel. “The king’s sister.” He moved onto Tess. “The queen.” Then he went back to Max and Liz. “The king…and Elenna.” He turned back to his daughter. “How do you know about the picture?”

“I was looking through your room one day…and I found it. I know of the others, but who is Elenna?”

Moland sighed. “I guess I better start at the beginning.”

Max nodded. “That would be a good idea.”

Moland ran his hand through his steely gray hair. “It’s like this. On our planet, Antar, there is a king, who is the head of the planet, a queen, who helps with the royal duties, and a second-in-command, who is there to advise and, should anything, um, happen to the king, to take over the duties until the heir is suitably trained, if there is an heir. If there is not an heir, a council of elders usually decides. Usually, there is just the Royal Three, but in this particular case the king was very close to his sister and she became an advisor to him, increasing the number of royals to four.

A noble, named Khivar, wanted more power than he had. He wanted to be king, and had to figure out a way to become it. He was pretty high up in the system, and began to plot. He gathered followers and befriended a few on the council of elders. He figured out the only way to be king was to kill the present one, and the rest of the royals. See, if the king died, power could be given to the queen, and the council usually sided with her. The sister would probably be considered an heir, and the second-in-command might be given the power as well.

Royal marriages on Antar were for convenience, not love. The king and queen were usually just really good friends, because an old, outdated, if I may say so, Antarian law states that the queen must be a high-ranking noble. The king was usually allowed a…mistress, of sorts. It actually depended on if the queen allowed it or not, and the king was bound by law not to have a mistress if the queen didn’t want him to. This king was no exception; he went to the queen to ask her permission, she granted it, and he had a mistress. Plain and simple.”

“Wait, wait, wait,” Tess interrupted. “I ALLOWED this?”

“Yes. Of course. After all, the king was like a brother to you. And speaking of brothers, you were in love with Elenna’s.”

“What?”

“Yes, Elenna was the ‘mistress’, although I never did like that phrase. She introduced you to her brother, and you fell for him immediately. You two had an affair off to the side, which everyone knew about, and the king was just happy you were happy.

I was Elenna’s personal bodyguard. The king assigned me to her, to protect her at all costs. I wasn’t relieved until either the king came in the room or Ziona, the female bodyguard, came.” Moland smiled. “We fought often, and three years after the death of the Royal Four, we got married. It brought a little joy into my upside down world.” He shook his head. “Anyway, no one really knew who the lovers of the royals were. It was an extra safety measure. I wouldn’t have known who Elenna was, had I not been her bodyguard. However, one day Khivar overheard the king and his sister talking. He found out about Elenna, and in that one conversation, he also found out she was pregnant. This posed a problem for him. If he killed the Royal Four, there would still be an heir and, therefore, no throne for him. So he had one other person to eliminate.

It was late in the day, I can remember. The king came to Elenna’s room to see her, and I left. I hadn’t gone down the hallway when I heard—and felt—the blast. It was awful. The room was destroyed and the king and Elenna were killed instantly. Within two days, the second-in-command, queen, and king’s sister were all dead.”

He paused after this to let it sink in. “I thought this was a little too coincidental. I dug around and I found out Khivar’s plot. I told it to the king’s mother, who was shocked. She told the council and exiled Khivar. They voted her in as the temporary leader, and she started working with the scientists to resurrect the Royal Four. She figured it out and sent you here. Khivar brought his forces against us and we’ve been at war ever since.”

Moland sighed deeply. “I was one of the few who actually knew what Elenna looked like. I kept the picture of her and the king as a reminder…that I had failed once, but I wouldn’t fail again.” He looked at Liz peculiarly. “The one thing I can’t understand is how you’re here. We didn’t make another one of you…your body was too banged up.”

“Maybe…” Liz whispered up toward Max, “maybe it was reincarnation. Maybe we really are soul mates.”

“Hold on, I have a question,” Maria said. “Why do you guys look human? I mean, Nasedo—he’s the protector—doesn’t totally look human in his regular form. And in their previous life thing, Max and Liz looked the same as they do now, so they looked human. What is with this? And whatever happened to Nasedo anyway? Why isn’t he coming?”

Teriana smiled. “I can explain this one. Very soon after we had sent the pods down to Earth, Khivar used a new tactic to try and weaken us. He sent a virus to the planet, one he had made. It made all of our people deathly ill and weak. But one thing we noticed was that none of the people who were descended from humans—meaning they had human DNA—were getting sick. See, there had been humans who had visited our planet, and some of them intermarried. This was a long, long time ago. Those born to humans and aliens looked humans and did not have the ability to shape-shift, but other than that, were like us. So we inserted human DNA through injections into all of our people, and the virus no longer affected us. We lost our shape-shifting ability, but we survived.

The protectors had already been sent down, so they were not affected by the virus or by the injections. Elenna was half-human, so she looked human. Way back in the royal line, there had been a human-alien mating, and that is why the king looked human. At first, the people weren’t sure they wanted a king who was not fully alien, but the kings in the line proved themselves again and again.

As for the protector, he is doing greater good here than he would on Antar. Also, we are not sure if it is fully safe for him to go back home, as the virus infected our atmosphere. It may have diluted in the past fifty years, but it may still affect him.”

Maria nodded. “Okay, I think I get it now.”

Teriana looked at the pinkening horizon and grimaced. “I really hate to say this, but we have to get going.”

“No!” Liz breathed out. The couples all hugged, and Michael, Isabel and Tess started to walk away toward the ship, Moland and Teriana leading the way.

Max tried to pull away from Liz to follow the others, but Liz wouldn’t let him. “I love you,” she said as she pulled him back to her and kissed him. His tongue mated with hers in a goodbye dance and, as he gasped for breath, he whispered, “I love you, too.” Then his mouth returned to hers.

Their hands found each other and they pushed their palms together. All of a sudden, a bright glow erupted from and surrounded their clasped hands.

A few minutes later, Max pulled away with a groan. He walked backwards toward the spaceship, keeping his eyes on Liz and his hand extended toward her. Both hands were glowing separately, but not nearly as brightly as they had when they were together.

Max turned around and walked toward the other aliens. They faded away to distant shadows as they traveled toward the ship.

And then one of the shadows turned back.

So, who do you think it was? Which one turned back? And why? *happy* I love being evil.
