|Title: Remember Me This Way|
Author: Megan (aka Insanity02)
Disclaimer: I do not own anything including all the characters and everything associated with Roswell. Also the title is from the song Remember Me This Way sung by Jordan Hill. That's not mine either.
Author's note: Takes place after Viva Las Vegas, which was aired waaayyyy back in Season 2. So, Max doesn’t know that Liz didn't sleep with Kyle. Alex is alive and (as much as I hate to say this) Tess seems to be okay. I wrote it then, but I didn’t have the guts to post it until now. This is my first attempt at fanfic. Feedback please!
Max trudged up the stairs to his room after a long day at school. Thank God spring break is just around the corner! He didn't think that he would be able to stand going to school. Seeing Liz everyday and not being able to really talk to her and connect with her and most importantly show his love for her.
Even though they were 'friends' now, he still felt the same way he always has for her. Utterly pure and complete love. And he knew that she felt the same, but she just wouldn't tell him the truth. When they were at the restaurant in Las Vegas he knew that she had made the decision to tell him what was really going on with her, but Maria had to finish singing!
He tried coaxing it out of her and he tried grilling her until she gave in, but nothing worked. He knew that he would have to wait until she was ready to tell him the truth.
He flopped on his bed and just when he was about to fall asleep his mom called for him. "Max! Phone!"
He sighed and picked up the phone. "Hello?" He mumbled.
"Hey, Max… um… I need to talk to you."
It was Liz. Max sat up immediately. "Of course. Is something wrong? Hold on. I'll be right there." He hung up the phone and bolted out to the jeep before she even had a chance to answer.
Max ran into the Crashdown in full panic mode. "Liz! What's the matter? Are you okay?"
"Yeah, Max. I'm fine," she said chuckling softly. "I just wanted to… uh… tell you something." she said, suddenly serious.
His panic subsided, but it was replaced with uneasiness. What did she want to tell him? He'd been trying to get it out of her for weeks and now she was ready and he was scared? C'mon, get a hold of yourself, Max. It can't be that bad… right? *
"Can we go talk... somewhere private?" She asked, bringing his attention back to her.
"Yeah." He responded, trying to swallow past the lump in his throat.
They went up to Liz's room. When Max looked at Liz's bed he got that horrible image of her and Kyle in bed together.
"Um… I don't really know how to say this…" she said nervously,
His heart immediately softened. "Don't worry about it. Just say what you need to say. We're friends, remember?"
"Friends… right… just say it…" Liz shifted uneasily.
"Yeah, we're friends. Don't worry." He repeated.
"Well, Max… Kyle and I…" Liz began. Max's thoughts began to run wild. *Ohmigod! She's gonna tell me that they're an item! NO!!! Please don't let her say it, please don't let her say it!!!*
"…sorta… didn't do what you think we did."
Did he hear her right? They didn't sleep together? Why did she lie to him? A soft 'what?' was all he could muster.
"I'm so sorry for lying to you, Max," Her eyes filling with tears, "but you… I mean the Future-you told me that Tess would leave and we would go to war and we would lose and then we would die and then…"
"Liz. It's okay." He said pulling her into a hug. "Just relax and tell me the whole story starting with the... um... Future-me." Max said quietly, stopping her babbling. Max led her to the bed and sat her down before he pulled up her desk chair and sat down in front of her.
When Liz finished telling him the truth, he just sat there with and unreadable expression on his face. Liz was so scared. What if he couldn’t understand why she lied to him?
"Max?" She asked uncertainly.
That snapped him back to reality. He just looked at her and suddenly jumped up pulling her into a fierce hug.
"Liz!" He cried, his face buried in her hair. The relief she heard in his voice broke her heart. It made her realize the unbelievable pain she had brought to him by misleading him the way she did.
"I'm so sorry, Max!" She cried, before breaking down into uncontrollable sobs. "I'm sorry!"
"It's okay, Liz" he said regaining his composure. "Now I know what not to do. I'm not gonna make the same mistake twice, but that doesn't mean that we can't be together."
"Yes, it does, Max. Lying to you was complete torture and I'm so sorry, but I just wanted to come clean before I left."
"What do you mean leaving? Do you mean leaving for vacation over Spring Break or…"
"No. I'm leaving Roswell. I got early admission to Harvard and since I've pretty much finished the entire curriculum, I'm just gonna go and, you know, get a head start."
"You're leaving Roswell because of me?" For the second time this year his heart was being ripped out.
"No, Max. Not because of you, for you." She said. "You have to follow your destiny and I have to find mine."
"Liz, you are my destiny. Not Tess. You."
Liz just looked at him pleading him to let her go. Her eyes showed him how much this was killing her, but she was trying to be strong… for him.
"When do you leave?"
"Tonight?" His voice sounded so broken.
"Yeah, pretty much."
"But Liz… you mean everything to me." He said, repeating the same words he said the day she walked away from him in the desert.
"I'm sorry Max." He just looked at her brokenly pleading her with his eyes for her to stay. Her gaze wavered from his. She got up and opened the door and motioned for him to leave. She didn't have that much fight left in her and she knew that if he persisted in trying to convince her to stay she would eventually give in.
"I, uh, better get packing. I'll see ya."
Max just nodded and left without saying a word. He walked by her and headed downstairs to his car.
"Good-bye Max." She whispered softly to herself.
When Max got into the Jeep, he just slumped down into the driver's seat, grateful for a place to sit. He was completely emotionally drained. He started the engine and headed towards the desert.
Liz began to pack in preparation for her departure to Harvard when she realized her vision was blurred. Tears were streaming down her face and she felt like her heart had been shattered into a million pieces.
*Later that night before Liz's flight*
Liz was standing in the airport waiting for her flight to be called. She kept reading her ticket to remind herself that this was the only way. Finally her flight number was called. She almost ran to the terminal, but she still had second thoughts. She forced herself to hand her ticket to the flight attendant.
Max was speeding to the airport. He had finally come to the decision that he had to talk to Liz before she left. He didn't even bother to park the Jeep. He just turned off the engine and sprinted inside to look for Liz.
Max ran up to the information desk and yelled, "Has the flight to Cambridge, Massachusetts left yet?"
The clerk looked slightly taken aback, but she glanced at her watch. "The flight should be taking off right about now." She said politely.
He ran toward the gate in a panicked hurry just in time to see the plane reach the runway.
Liz slumped into her seat still not sure if she had made the right decision. Forlornly, she looked out the window and her eye is immediately drawn to a figure standing at the gate. It was Max. Even from a distance she could make out his face. He looked as desolate as she felt. She urged herself not to look back, but to look forward instead. So she did. She looked straight into the seat before her not really seeing it, but she could still see Max in her mind's eye.
Las Vegas: A man in a tuxedo emerges from a cab and he's followed by a woman --a bride. His bride. She looks so happy and so beautiful. He carries her to the doorstep of a luxurious hotel. They seem to harbor between them all the happiness in the world and as they turn she sees their faces. It's her… and Max.
Liz emerges from her vision and quickly turns back in hopes of catching a glimpse of him, but it's too late. The plane takes off and leaves him behind.
At the gate he stands and watches the plane disappear into the distance. He stays there, frozen to the spot for some time afterwards. He's filled with regret and sorrow.
Liz walks up to the registration office and asks the man where she can find the necessary information and her dorm assignment. He merely grunts at her, hands her the papers and sends her off towards her dorm.
She walks down the hallway examining the walls and doors searching for her room. She finds the door already open and boxes stacked up beside it. Liz peers in and calls out.
"Hello! Is anybody home?"
A tall, lean blonde haired young man appears from around the corner. "Hey!" He greets her and puts forward a hand and she shakes it lightly, smiling politely.
"Nice to meet you Ms. Evans." She looks at him, shock registering on her face.
"No, it's Parker. Liz Parker."
"But you said Evans."
"No, I didn't."
"Yeah, you did."
"No, I didn't."
He sighs slightly, "Alright, Ms. Parker then. I guess we're roomies."
She looks at him uncertainly, "Yeah… roomies…"
A security personnel walks up to Max and taps him on the shoulder.
"Excuse me, sir, but you're going to have to leave this area."
"Oh, yeah sure." He says, absentmindedly and heads to where he left his jeep. When he gets there he doesn't see it and it suddenly dawns on him that he's parked in the tow away zone. He stands for a while, indecisive. What would he do without her?
He walks over to the nearest phone booth and calls Michael.
"My jeep's been towed."
"So, you want me to swipe Maria's car and come get you? Where are you?"
"No, I need you to cover for me."
"What are you talking about?"
"What?! Are you crazy?!"
"No, I need to go after her, Michael. Just cover for me."
"Maxwell, don't be…" Max hangs up and heads back into the airport with a renewed purpose.
Liz was exhausted. Marshall just couldn't take a hint! Liz had arrived at eleven thirty that night and she was dead tired, but her 'roomie' was full of energy. He insisted that they go get some coffee to get 'better aquainted'. Liz tried to object, but he dragged her out the door before she had the chance to say anything.
Now they were sitting at a booth in some café sipping their drinks. Marshall kept talking about how excited he was about getting early admission and how he planned to study to become a brain surgeon. Liz tried to concentrate on what he was saying, but she couldn't help yawning.
When he called the waitress over to get the bill, Liz nearly jumped for joy. Finally! Now she could go back to the dorm to get some shut-eye.
"Hey, let's go catch a movie." he suggested, "It's only twelve thirty."
Liz tried to be polite, "No really, I'm sure you're trying to save up your money for the books and the rent and everyth..."
"Aw, don't be silly! I have plenty of money saved up! C'mon, what do you wanna see? 'Get over it'? 'Sweet November'? Great chick-flick! Your choice! Anything you want!"
"No, I'm really tired and I…" Liz began.
"C'mon! The night's still young! Pick a movie! Any movie!"
Liz realized this was a fight she couldn't win. "Let's just go see, 'Sweet November', okay?"
"Okay! See?! I knew you wanted to go!"
When they finally got out of the movie it was past 3:00.
"Okay, we saw the movie. Can we go now?" Liz asked between gritted teeth.
"Yup! I had a really great time! You're really fun to be around!" Marshall exclaimed not even noticing that Liz was looking like she was getting ready to kill him.
Back at the dorm, Liz stumbled into her room. She didn't know where she got the energy to change her clothes. But the minute her head hit the pillow, she was asleep.
She felt like she had just barely closed her eyes when Marshall came bursting into her room.
"Rise 'n shine, sleepy head!!!"
Liz just turned over in her bed and mumbled, "What do you want Marshall?"
"C'mon!" he said whipping her blanket off, "Let's go for breakfast."
Liz groaned. "What time is it?"
"Late enough. Let's go!"
Liz looked over at her clock. It read 6:00 am. Liz sat up, her hair completely mussed, grabbed her blanket from Marshall, turned over and tried to go back to sleep.
"Fine, Ms. Grumpy. I'll go by myself." said Marshall and left her room, closing the door behind him.
Just as Liz was about to fall asleep again when there came a knock at the door.
"What?!" she called out, frustrated at how annoyingly persistent he was.
"Nothing. I just wanted to make absolutely sure that you didn't want to come with me and my buddies to breakfast."
"Yes, I'm sure! Now go away!!!"
Marshall turned away from Liz's door and snorted, "Talk about rude! Oh well, her loss!"
Just when Marshall was about to open the door to go out there came a soft knock. Marshall swung open the door expecting to see one of his friends, but instead he saw a tall, dark man with dark intense eyes looking back at him.
"Hi. Can I help you?"
"Yeah, I'm here to see Liz Parker. Is she here?"
"Yeah, but she really isn't a morning person so maybe you should come back later." said Marshall.
Max really didn't have much patience, "No, I really need to see her." he insisted.
"Okay, but I'm just warning you."
"Yeah, whatever." said Max before pushing past Marshall.
"Sheesh, is everybody associated with her as rude as she is?" muttered Marshall on his way out.
Liz heard her bedroom door open again. "Marshall, get the hell out!" Liz yelled hurling her pillow at the door. Max caught it easily.
"Liz." he whispered. When she heard his soft voice, Liz was instantly awake, but she was frozen in her position, with her back to the door.
"Max?" She sat up, staring at him. "What are you doing here?"
"I couldn't just let you leave without a fight. Besides, I know you got that vision of us getting married in Vegas." said Max.
"Oh my God." whispered Liz. She was in a sort of trance like state. Almost like she couldn't believe that she was seeing him there.
Liz sat up in her bed. Her heart was pounding in her chest and her blood was ringing in her ears. It was just a dream. Max didn't come after her.
Liz looked over to her clock. It was 5:00 in the morning, but she knew she couldn't sleep now, so she got up and began to unpack. She opened her backpack and turned it upside down emptying its contents. Among the items was a small gift box. What was that? She didn't remember packing that.
She opened it slowly. Inside, was a switchblade with an engraving on it--Max and Liz 4ever. The one that she had given Max on Christmas last year and the one that he had given back just before he left because he couldn't be friends with her.
That's when she lost it. She cried -- great racking sobs that shook her entire body. All of a sudden, she was in someone's arms. She tried to push him away.
"No, Marshall… just… leave me alone!" she cried between sobs. She was completely distraught.
*Who the hell was Marshall? * Max wondered. He had just arrived at her dorm and when he entered her room she was opening her backpack. Then all of a sudden she froze and then began to cry.
"Shh, Liz. It's okay. I'm here… I'm here." Max said, hugging her tightly to him.
Liz stiffened. "Max?"

Max and Liz were sitting on her bed talking. After several minutes of hysterical crying, Liz managed to calm down.
Dabbing her moist cheeks, Liz asked, "Why did you come after me?"
"You know why... You're the only one for me and you always will be, Liz."
"Max, you know that if we're together, Tess will leave and Michael and Isabel will die. We can't be selfish… we can't let the world end." Liz pleaded.
"I know. So, I won't let Tess leave. You know, she's been getting really friendly with Kyle and I think they want to be more than just friends."
"Still, I don't think it's a good idea…" Liz trailed off.
"Liz, we can be together. I want to be with you for the rest of my life."
"Max…" Liz was at a loss for words. How could she keep saying no to someone who obviously cared about her so much?
Max pulled her into a hug. "I love you. I always will." He whispered.
"I love you." Liz put her hand on his face and caressed his jaw. Then Max was kissing her. The kiss lasted for endless moments. It had been so long. It made them wonder how they could be apart for so long.
Max broke the kiss before it went too far. He leaned his forehead against hers. There was still one more thing to discuss.
"So, I guess you're gonna stay here, right?"
Liz's heart fell. "Yeah. I have to… this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I mean, it's Harvard." She stood up, hugging herself.
Max came up behind her and pulled her to him. "We'll make it work. We're together... We'll make everything work."
Liz turned around in his arms and buried her face into his chest.
The next morning, Marshall came into Liz's room, planning on asking her to breakfast. He liked her. She was beautiful and obviously intelligent, because she got early admission to Harvard, which was no small feat. Instead he found Liz in Max's arms sound asleep.
"What the hell is this?!" yelled Marshall.
Max and Liz jumped up. "Marshall! What are you doing here?!" Liz yelled, completely taken by surprise.
"I should be asking you that question!" Marshall turned his attack on Max.
"I'm her boyfriend." Max said calmly and evenly.
Marshall turned back to Liz. "But you said last night that you were single."
"I know… Look, Marshall, it's really complicated and I can't really explain it to you."
"But… we're roomies."
"Yeah, I know. I'm really sorry, but not for long. I don't think this arrangement is going to work."
Marshall was completely speechless. He knew that Liz was on the rebound and he planned on taking advantage of that, but this guy, Max, had to get in the way of that.
Max and Liz ended up going for breakfast together. They were at the café that Liz and Marshall went to the night before.
"You can't be thinking of leaving Harvard for me. You said yourself that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity."
"Who said anything about leaving Harvard?" Liz asked smiling at Max.
"What? You want me to come to… Harvard… with you?"
"Yup!" Liz saw how unsettled Max looked. "C'mon, you can do it! You're marks are good enough! The only thing you have to really worry about are the SATs and even those are gonna be piece of cake for you."
"Yeah, I guess…" Max didn't share the same confidence that she did.
When Max and Liz arrived back to her dorm room he made the call to the airport, but since it was Spring Break, the flights for the next two weeks were full.
"Well, I guess I'm not going anywhere for a while."
"What do you mean?"
"The flights for the next two weeks are booked so I guess, you're gonna have to put up with me." He teased.
She smiled and teased him back. "Well, you better behave yourself, Mr. Evans."
He growled playfully at her and grabbed her pulling her against him. "I can't promise anything." She just smiled and kissed him.
Liz went to her first class when Spring Break ended. Max only had one more week with her! She tried not to let it bother her, but she couldn't help but wonder what would happen in the next three months.
He still had to finish the school year and take the SATs. She wasn't worried about whether or not he'd get in. Instead she was worried about Tess leaving. What if Max was wrong about Tess wanting a relationship with Kyle?
No, she couldn't think like that. They'd work through it. Besides, Max knew that Tess couldn't leave. He'd take care of it.
When Liz walked into her class everyone's eyes were on her. She was late because she couldn't find her classroom and she was 'distracted' before class by a certain… distraction.
She felt kinda odd with three hundred people looking at her, including the teacher who was a man about fifty years of age. He seemed kind of odd. He was looking at her a little too closely…
When class ended Liz walked up to the teacher. His name was Harms. Brock Harms. What a strange name. It sounded so… sinister.
"Uh.. Professor Harms? I was wondering what I missed today in class because I came in late."
"Ah, Liz Parker, correct?"
"Yes, sir. How did you know my name?" Liz was a little freaked out. First, that man was totally staring at her when she walked in and now he knew her name without her telling him?
"I saw it on your… notebook. Well, Ms. Parker you didn't really miss much. I usually start off my classes by discussing recent events so you should read the newspaper before you come into my class in the mornings."
"Oh, okay. Thank you. Bye."
"Yes, I'll be seeing your Ms. Parker." He replied.
Liz almost ran out of the room and right into Max.
"Max! What are you doing here?"
"I missed you, and besides, it's lunchtime. Don't you want to spend some time with me?"
Liz smiled at Max and forgot about her weird teacher. "As if you need to ask." she said, tilting her head up so he could kiss her.
Max and Liz ate lunch at a small place that Max found that morning. The food was actually pretty good.
"Hey Liz! Fancy meeting you here!" Marshall exclaimed as he walked in, immediately spotting her.
"Hi Marshall." Liz looked down at her notebook and noticed that she only had her initials printed on it. How the hell did her Professor know her name with only initials?
Liz glanced over at Max who was obviously troubled by this Marshall guy. He seemed to show up wherever Max and Liz were.
All last week over Spring Break, he would show up. Like when they were looking for a hotel room for Max to stay in and when they were walking around the campus so Liz could familiarize herself with it, and even when they were at the park just talking and spending some quality time together.
"Are you done, Liz?" Max asked her almost desperately. He really wanted to get away from her freaky ex-roommate.
Liz said goodbye to Marshall politely and hurried out the door with Max.
Marshall watched her rush off with Max. He was so angry. What did she see in that sorry excuse for a human? He promised himself that he would get to her and Max would be there to see it.
What Marshall didn't know was that Max wasn't quite 100% human and he completely underestimated the couple's absolute devotion to each other.
Max was worried about Liz. After they saw Marshall at lunch, Liz hadn't said a word. At first Max thought that it was the fact that he was so weird, but when he went to go pick up Liz from class late in the afternoon she still seemed preoccupied.
"Liz? Is something wrong?"
"No." she replied simply.
"Come on, Liz. I know you better than that. What's the matter?" Max pressed.
Liz sighed. She didn't want to make Max worry over nothing. "Really, Max. Nothing's wrong. I'm just tired from class today."
But really, Liz couldn't stop thinking about her teacher. How did he know her name? Ah! It was driving her crazy! She would go to class tomorrow and ask him.
Max decided to let it slide. Maybe she really was tired, but he was going to keep an eye out for her, just in case.
Liz went to class early the next morning. When she entered the room she thought she saw somebody disappearing around the corner.
"Professor Harms? Is that you?" Liz called out. There was no answer.
Suddenly, he was standing right behind her.
"Hello, Ms. Parker. How may I help you, today?" he said softly. Liz whirled around.
"Oh! Good morning, sir." He caught her completely by surprise. "I wanted to ask you how you knew my name."
"I told you, I saw it on your notebook." he stated simply.
"How could you? I only have my initials on it. You may have a degree, but I doubt you were taught to read minds, as well." Liz challenged.
He just looked at her with his small beady eyes and smiled a cold smile. "Are you sure that's all you wanted to ask me, Ms. Parker?" he asked, ignoring her last comment. He advanced towards her.
"What are you doing?" Liz was getting scared. Just then, the bell rang and students began to file in. Brock immediately stepped away from Liz and went to go write that day's lesson on the board.
Liz was uneasy for the entire class. She wanted to get out of there as fast as possible because Brock kept glancing at her throughout the lecture as if he were daring her to do something.
Towards the end of class Liz was packing up her stuff so she could bolt as soon as the bell rang, but when Brock finished his lecture, he came up to her and said that he needed her to remain after class because she needed a textbook.
When the bell rang Liz tried to slip out without him noticing, but he caught her by the arm and pulled her back into the classroom.
"Where are you going, Ms. Parker?" he said menacingly.
"Uh, nowhere." She tried to keep her voice even as she pulled her arm from his grasp.
"Good." He led her towards his desk. Before she knew it, he had her pinned up against the wall.
She tried to walk around him, but he caught her around the middle and flung her violently into the wall. She hit it with such force it almost knocked her out. Then he grabbed her and threw her on his desk. She tried pushing him off, but he was too strong.
"MAX!!!" Her scream was of pure terror. "Max!!! Oh my God! Max!!!"
Max was waiting outside on the campus for her. He was wondering what was taking her so long to come out. Almost everybody had left already. He decided to wait a little while longer and then if she still didn't come out he'd go in and get her.
Liz kept struggling against him. He grabbed her by the neck and pinned her to the desk. Liz was losing oxygen fast. She fought to stay conscious because she knew that if she passed out then it would be over, but she was fighting a losing battle. The world around her was beginning to dim.
She frantically searched for something to grab hold of. Her hand landed on the three-hole punch. She grabbed it and with one last ounce of energy she swung it and hit him in the head.
Max had just walked in to see the guy grab Liz's neck. He could feel how much pain Liz was in and he was frozen to the spot. Her arms were flailing through the air. When she grabbed the hole puncher and hit him, it landed with a sickening crack. The guy was immediately knocked out and he fell to the floor.
Max rushed to Liz's side.
"Liz? Are you okay? Liz?" Max was so scared.
"Max?" Liz looked up shakily at him.
"Are you okay?" Max repeated.
"I think so." Liz sat up slowly and looked on the floor to see what kind of damage she had done to Brock, but he wasn't there.
"Uh… Max? Where's Harms?" Max was hugging her.
"You knocked him out." he mumbled into her hair.
"Then where is he?" Liz asked.
"What do you…" Max began as he looked down to the floor to see nothing. "Oh my God…"
Max and Liz immediately began to make their way to the door. Just as they were heading out, they ran into Marshall.
"Hey! What are you doing here, Liz?"
"I had class. Listen, I really have to go. Bye." Liz rushed out of the building, not noticing that Marshall had a sick smile on his face at how obviously shaken up she was.
"I'll get you, Ms. Parker. I'll get you." he said as she ran out.
Liz immediately reported the incident to the police and transferred out of the class.
Liz and Max were having dinner at their hotel room, when somebody knocked.
Max got up to answer the door. "I'll get it." Liz nodded,
When Max opened the door there was nobody there, but on the doorstep was a box wrapped in beautiful paper addressed to Liz. Max brought it in and gave it to her.
"Oh, Max! You're so sweet!" Liz gushed.
"No. I didn't give this to you. It was left by the door for you."
Liz's expression completely changed from happy to concerned. What if it was from her professor?! What if he knew where she lived?! What if he was stalking her?!
Liz tried to calm down a bit. *Whoa! You're jumping to conclusions, Liz. Just calm down. It might not be as bad as it seems.* She opened the card. It looked like a ransom note and inside it read:
You knew I was drawn to you from the first time I saw you. I tried to be nice, but you have given me no other choice. I'll get you, Ms. Parker. I'll be seeing you.
There was no signature, but Liz had a pretty good idea who had sent it. When she finished reading it, she was completely speechless. Max noticed the change in Liz's expression.
"What is it, Liz?"
She just handed him the note. When he finished reading it, he immediately knew that he would have to keep Liz within view at all times.
He wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "Don't worry. I'll get us through this." Max said trying to convince Liz as well as himself that he could handle whatever was coming.
Max knew that if he lost her, he wouldn't be able to live with himself.

“Are you okay?” Liz asked Max. They had been sitting in the living room for quite some time now.
Max looked at her and tried to smile. "Yeah. I'm fine."
Liz knew that he was fighting to keep it together because she knew that she would be completely distraught if there was the slightest possibility that he would get hurt.
She felt so bad for him. "Max, don't worry. We'll get through this. Remember? You said that as long as we're together we can get through anything."
He looked with his warm, intense eyes and nodded. "I'm just… I can't lose you, Liz."
"I know. And you won't. I'm not going anywhere, Max. I promise."
She paused to see his reaction. He still looked a bit skeptical, but he was trying to lighten up.
"C'mon." She said suddenly standing up, pulling him with her. "Let's go get some ice cream."
Max smiled at her effort in trying to make him feel better. "Okay."
Max and Liz were sitting in a quiet little ice cream store at one of the booths sharing a banana split. As a matter of fact there was no one there except for the clerk who was an elderly woman. But then Marshall came strolling in.
"Hey, Liz! What's up!" exclaimed Marshall cheerfully. That's when Max snapped.
"Okay, what the hell are you doing? Are you stalking my girlfriend or something? I'm really sick of how you just happen to show up all the time."
"Whoa, buddy! Take a chill pill! It's just a little co-in-ki-dink. Not a big deal."
"I don't think so. What do you want?" Max demanded.
"Nothing! I just had a really good time with Liz the first night she came here and I thought maybe she would want to do it again." Marshall said with a smile.
Max froze. What did Liz do with him? He looked at her. "Liz?"
She was sitting in the booth in total shock. Who did he think he was! "I didn't do anything with him, Max." She said reassuringly.
Marshall cut in. "Um, but I beg to differ. We had fun for hours! It was great!"
Max glared at him. His normally gentle eyes were blazing with fury. Max punched Marshall square in the jaw.
Liz jumped up to hold him back. "Max! What are you doing?!"
A voice cut her off. "You pack quite a wallop, but hasn't anybody ever told you to respect your elders?"
When she looked into his face, he didn't look angry anymore. Instead, he looked shocked. She turned around to see what he was looking at and instead of seeing Marshall, there was Brock Harms looking back at them.
Brock was Marshall! He was a shape-shifter!
"You have no idea what you've gotten yourself into." he snarled at them. "I've tried to be nice to your little toy, but you had to get in the way. Now I'm going to kill you and have her as my little plaything."
Max was beyond furious. He just looked Brock straight in the eye and said coldly. "No, I don't think you know what you've gotten yourself into."
Brock raised his hand to attack, but Max was far quicker. He jerked his hand up and a giant ball of light burst from Max's hand and hit Brock in the chest causing him to slam against the far wall of the room. Brock appeared to be knocked out, but Max wasn't taking any chances.
He grabbed Brock and tied him up just in case he was thinking of disappearing like last time when he tried to get Liz.
After Max tied him up, Liz had to ask. "Max, when did you learn how to do that?"
"Um, I'm not sure. I just did it. I was so angry at him for degrading you like that."
Brock began to wake up. "Hey, kiddies. I'm back. That's a pretty impressive trick you got there." he said to Max.
Max glared at him. "What do you want?"
"I want her." he stated simply smiling dementedly at Liz. "She's a cute little thing and she is going to be mine."
Liz was fuming. "I'll never be yours your demented bastard!" she screamed at him. Max was totally taken by surprise. He had never seen Liz that angry, let alone use the B-word.
Brock cut off Max's thoughts. "I'll get you, Ms. Parker. I always get what I want."
Max just lead Liz to the front counter where the elderly store-clerk had been. They had totally forgotten that they were not alone, but they found her passed out on the floor. Max lay her down in one of the booths and then picked up the phone to call the police.
He told them that Brock had been sexually harassing Liz and that he had attacked her earlier and now they had him in custody.
When the police arrived they thanked Max and Liz. Apparently, Brock had a history of harassing and raping women and he had just recently been let out of prison for good behavior.
After all the cops left, a man in a navy blue suit walked in. "Hello. Max Evans, I presume" he said to Max who just nodded. "And Liz Parker?" he said turning to Liz.
"Yes." she answered.
"Well, I'm from the FBI." he said flashing his badge at them. "I was wondering what you know about Mr. Harms."
"What do you mean." Max asked, instinctively pulling Liz close to his side.
"I want to know what you've seen him do."
"Other than attack me and harass me, nothing." Liz replied.
"Are you sure you haven't seen him do anything say… unusual?" he pressed.
Max pretended not to know what he was talking about. "What are you getting at?"
"Well, you obviously are not of any help." he said, extending a hand for Max to shake. "Thank you for your co-operation, Mr. Evans. Ms. Parker." he said nodding in her direction. And with that he left.
Max looked at Liz, warmly. "We did it. Not only is he in jail, but the FBI know what he is and they know what kind of precautions to take to keep him away."
Liz looked a little doubtful. "Are you sure Max? I mean, we don't even know the extent of his powers."
"Yes, but Michael told me that they know more about us than we do."
Suddenly, a smile crept across Liz's face. "Then let's go see if we can generate some more 'clues' about you." she said pulling him out the door towards the hotel.
Max and Liz were on their way to the airport. Max was driving, and Liz was huddled close to his side. She clung to his chest like her life depended on it. Silent tears were slipping down her cheeks. Max hated seeing her like this, but there was nothing he could do. He had to go back to Roswell and take his exams in hopes of getting into Harvard and spending the rest of his life with her.
"We're here." Max said, tenderly stroking her hair. She was still leaning against him not wanting to let go of him just yet.
After a while she sat up and looked into his face. "I don't know how I'm going to be away from you, Max."
"I know." Max said trying to stop the tears welling in his eyes.
The heartbroken couple made their way into the airport clinging to each other. Max sat down in a chair pulling Liz into his lap and hugging her to him. No words were needed. This tender moment they shared together was invaluable to both of them.
When Max's flight was called she climbed off his lap so he could get up, but she kept her hand tightly in his. They walked towards the terminal, but right before they got there, Max stopped them and stepped in front of Liz. He cupped her cheek with his hand and turned her face up towards his so he could kiss her. He kissed her so gently, almost like if he touched her too roughly she could break. She kissed him back, never wanting the moment to pass.
When Max ended the kiss, Liz kept her eyes closed for a moment, trying to remember exactly the way his lips felt on hers, exactly the way his breath was hot against her face, and exactly what it felt like just to be kissed by him.
Liz looked deeply into his intense eyes, which expressed everything that she was feeling right at that moment.
"I'm gonna miss you so much." Liz said, still staring into his eyes.
"Ditto." Max said softly. This made Liz give a small smile, but the tears were starting to roll down her face again. She tried to speak, but her throat had closed up. Instead, she let out a small sob.
"Hey, I'm gonna come back. Don't worry." he said gently, again cupping her face with his hand.
"I know." she said, almost inaudibly. "I… I'm just gonna miss you… so much."
Max just held her tightly and he was about to kiss her again, when the flight attendant tapped him on the shoulder.
"Excuse me, sir, but we're going to take off soon and we need everybody on the plane."
Max turned his head, without letting go of Liz and nodded silently at her, before turning his undivided attention back to the love of his life.
"I gotta…" he began before trailing off. He hated the idea of leaving her, let alone voicing the inevitable.
She nodded into his chest before dropping her arms to her side. Max grabbed her hand and brought it up to his lips and kissed it. He began walking slowly backwards and only when he had to, did he let go of her hand. But not before mouthing to her 'I love you'. She tried to smile at him even though the tears were blurring her vision.
She walked over to the window and watched his plane approach the runway. She stood there for a long time even after it disappeared. Only when the security guard ask her to leave did she contemplate going back to her room.
The minute she stepped through the door, she completely broke down. Closing the door and crumbling to the ground, she cried until she fell asleep.
Hours later, the shrill ringing of the phone woke her up. She stood up groggily, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and trying to walk off the pins and needles in her legs. She picked up the phone.
Max's soft voice came through the receiver. "Hey. Sorry if I woke you. I just needed to hear your voice."
Liz smiled sadly to herself. She knew exactly how he felt. "So, how was your flight?" She needed to hear his voice just as much as he needed to hear hers. It helped them feel a little closer to each other. They ended up talking till almost the next morning.
Liz woke up late in the afternoon with her hand still on the telephone. She glanced at the clock and realized that she had missed her morning class and that her second class of the day was almost over.
"Aw, crap!" she moaned and wearily got up from the couch. She headed for the bathroom to take a shower and brush her teeth. She managed get ready in time for her third class of the day.
When the three-hour lecture ended it was dinnertime. She went to quickly pick up something to eat, so she could return to her room and call Max.
She sprinted up the steps of the building because the stupid elevator was too slow. She burst into her room, slammed the door and flopped down on the couch. Picking up the phone she dialed Max's number.
This became a weekly ritual of sorts. At first they would call each other everyday, but after a while, their parents became a little annoyed at how absurd their telephone bill was even though Liz and Max both paid for their own shares. So they could only talk on the phone once a week. The other times were spent messaging each other on the Internet. Liz would go to class in the day and when she got home she would message Max on the Internet or he would message her, depending on who get on first.
Two months later
It was the last class of the day and also the last day of classes for Liz before summer break. Being in University had its advantages. She was so excited. Only an hour before she would go to the airport and fly out to Roswell for the summer! She would see Max in less than six hours!
Liz was literally bouncing in her seat. She just couldn't sit still. The girl sitting beside her nudged her and gave her a knowing smile. Her name was Emily. Liz and she became pretty good friends over the last eight weeks.
At first Liz didn't intend on telling her about Max, but it was bound come out. Liz refused to go out after classes most days and if Emily managed to convince her, she would have to stop by the apartment and go on the Internet for at least half an hour to message somebody.
When Liz finally told her about Max, she couldn't wipe the smile off her face. Emily thought that it was really great that somebody so young could fall so completely in love with someone else. She loved to tease Liz about her obvious devotion to him.
That afternoon, immediately after class, Emily drove Liz to the airport.
"Thanks so much, Em. I owe you one!" Liz exclaimed enthusiastically, hugging her.
Emily grinned. "No prob, Liz! Now go get him! I'll see you when you get back!"
Liz flashed her another bright smile. "You better stay in touch, cuz we're not gonna see each other for another four months!"
"Of course, Liz. I'll message you. Now go!"
"'Kay, bye!" Liz almost skipped into the airplane.
She was finally going to see Max!!!
Liz was on the plane trying to sit still so she wouldn't frighten the elderly lady beside her. The plane was scheduled to land in a less than half an hour.
Suddenly the elderly woman spoke to Liz. "What are you so excited about, dearie?" She had long white hair just past her shoulders and her skin looked so smooth, but Liz could see the wisdom and experience shining in her eyes.
Liz was slightly surprised at how insightful she was. "Oh, I'm just going back to town to visit my family." she said politely.
"And the love of your life." said the woman knowingly.
Liz was a little bit taken aback. "Yes." she said hesitantly.
The woman knew that she was making the young girl nervous, but she pretended not to notice.
"Ah, I remember what it was like to be so completely in love that you can't think of anything or anybody else. My Gordon is the sweetest, most loving man a girl could hope for."
Liz could totally relate to what she was saying. "Yeah." Liz said dreamily. "So, are you going to see him?"
"Yes. It's our 65th anniversary tomorrow."
"Wow! Congratulations! I hope me and Max can be together for as long as you two and still be in love." The woman smiled a little sadly.
"What's the matter?" Liz asked.
"Well tomorrow is also exactly one year since Gordy passed."
"Oh. I'm so sorry." The lady patted Liz's hand and nodded.
Suddenly the plane started to tremble. At first Liz wasn't too concerned. Maybe they flew through a cloud or something, but the shaking got more vigorous. Liz started to worry a little.
The flight attendant came on the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen, we are going through a little bit of turbulence. Please remain in your seats and put on your safety belts. The turbulence should end momentarily."
Just as the attendant ended her little speech, the plane all of a sudden began to nose-dive. The oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling and that caused everybody to begin to panic, except for Liz and the elderly woman sitting beside her.
They looked at each other, knowing that they probably wouldn't survive. Liz looked into the woman's eyes and knew that she would be joining her Gordon soon. A sudden wave of peacefulness seemed to wash across the woman's face.
The woman looked into Liz's eyes and hoped the beautiful young girl would make it through this ordeal so she could live her life with her love. She placed her hand on Liz's arm and smiled at her.
Max was at the airport. He could hardly contain himself. Liz was coming!!! He could finally hold her in his arms again. He was pacing back and forth, and trying to contain himself. He shouldn't have drank that cup of coffee for dinner.
He suddenly had the impulse to look out the giant window at the runways, which were all lit up so planes could see where they were going. He looked up into the night sky, at the bright stars shining down on him. Liz always loved to sit on her balcony with him and admire the beauty of the night sky.
He saw something… a bright light gliding across the silent sky towards the airport. He wanted to tell himself that it was a shooting star and that it was only creating the illusion of coming down to the airport, but in the pit of his stomach he knew that it wasn't. Just then it hit him. That was a plane! No, it was Liz's plane that was coming down in a ball of flames!
Max saw a group of personnel come running out of 'Emergency' door to his right. Oh my God! What the hell was going on?! How could this happen?! Max sprinted to the 'Exit. Personnel Only' flung open the door and followed the group of people he just saw, but all the could do was wait for it to crash.
After several minutes the plane came down hard on the runway. Max tried to control the impact of the plane. Not only did he not want Liz to die, he didn't want ANYONE to be killed.
Firefighters rushed to the plane wreckage to extinguish the fire. When they finally got the blaze under control, some firemen went in to search for survivors. Max was beyond reason. When he saw the people going in he also tried to run into the debris, but somebody saw him.
"Hey!" he said grabbing Max. "You can't be here! Security! Get this guy out of here!"
Max tried to put up a fight, but he was no match for three burly men. They dragged him back into the airport where he watched from the window and they kept an eye on him to make sure he didn't try to go back out.
Max watched them pull lifeless bodies out. It didn't look like there were any survivors. But then, hope alas! They saw them help a woman and her son out, but what followed made all the panic come flooding back. A fireman carried out a limp looking woman. She had long hair like Liz and she was tiny like Liz and… she did not look like she was going to make it.
He bolted out of the room he was in. Even though there were three security guards going after him, they couldn't catch him. They were too beefy to keep up.
Just as Max burst through the door, he saw the paramedics cover her head and body with a white sheet. NO!!! Max's head throbbed. She can't leave me! I need her!
He raced over to the stretcher she was on and tore off the sheet. She looked so small and helpless. Her hair was black and burnt. Her shirt had been torn to shreds and it looked like she had broken her arm. He face was covered in soot and ash and she had several cuts. She was barely recognizable.
Max quickly put his hand on her forehead and concentrated on healing her. At this point he didn't care who saw. Let them turn him into the FBI. Let them do experiments on him. Let them torture him. He didn't care. As long as Liz lived… that's all that mattered.
He tried to reach out to her, but he couldn't find her. *C'mon! Try again!* He yelled at himself. He put every ounce of strength into restoring her, but he couldn't. Max felt numb. How could he lose her like this? They had just found each again! They were supposed to be together until the end of time! Max sank down to his knees and sobbed.
He felt like somebody had not only ripped out his heart, but his soul. The one thing that belonged to Liz for all eternity and now it was gone and shattered into a million pieces.
"NOOOO!!!" But no one heard his anguished scream, except for one person.
She was wrapped in a towel and was being checked over by a paramedic. Liz knew Max was there, but she couldn’t find him amid the swarms of people until she heard his cry.
She immediately located him and she realized that he thought the badly burned person on the stretcher was she when, in fact, it was the elderly woman sitting beside her on the plane.
Liz immediately told the paramedic she was okay and that she really needed to go to Max. At first he objected, but when he saw the crumpled ball of limbs on the ground he realized that she really did need to comfort him.

Liz came up behind Max and gingerly touched him on the shoulder. Startled, he sprang to his feet and spun around. When he saw her standing there, alive, he squinted. It was almost like he didn't recognize her.
"Liz?" He starred at her.
"Yes, Max. It's me." she said, smiling gently.
He grabbed her and pulled her into a fierce hug so that she would never be out of his sight again. He crushed her into his chest and breathed in her scent. Even though she was covered in soot, he could still smell her. She always smelled marvelous. It wasn't something he could ever describe in words, but everytime he was near her, he would feel a tingle go down his spine.
"Liz!" He sobbed into her hair and managed to gasp out, "Oh my God, Liz! I thought… I thought that was you…"
She rubbed her hands across his back soothingly and tried to calm him down. Slowly, he managed to get a hold of himself. They stood there grasping each other for several minutes before Max finally loosened his grip on her.
Max looked into her brilliant, gentle eyes and lost himself. "Liz…" he didn't know what to say. He was so thankful that he hadn't lost her.
They began to walk towards Max's jeep. He kept her close to his side, his arm wrapped tightly around her shoulders. She also had her arm across his waist, holding onto him. She always felt so safe in his arms.
When they got to the jeep Max let Liz get in through the driver's side, so that she would only have to slide over the passenger's side and he wouldn't have to let go of her hand.
Instead of starting the car, Max turned over to look at Liz again, just to make absolutely sure that she was still there and that this wasn't a dream. A long silence lingered between them.
All of a sudden, Max said softly, "I love you, Liz."
She smiled sincerely at him. "I love you too, Max."
"Liz, just know that I'll always feel the same way about you. No matter what happens. Whether we're together or apart… this is forever." he promised her as he took out a rectangular box from his jacket pocket.
Her eyes filled with tears. He had to be the most wonderful man in the whole world. She accepted it tearfully.
She uncovered the box slowly. Inside, was a dazzling silver chain with an exquisite heart-shaped locket on it. On the outside, it was engraved: Max & Liz Forever, just like the blade she had given him almost two years ago. When she opened the locket, on the left side was a picture of them together, smiling brightly. On the right side were the words: Eternally yours, Max.
"Max, this is beautiful… Thank you." That's all she could say.
"You don't have to thank me. You've given me your heart and that's something I'll always treasure."
Max and Liz drove back to Roswell in silence. They just sat there enjoying each other's presence. When they got back to the Crashdown, it was almost 12:00 in the morning.
Max parked the car across the street and turned to her. The realization finally dawned on him that he still hadn't kissed her! He was so traumatized by the events of that night, he actually forgot to kiss her! He leaned over and placed a soft kiss on her lips. Her hand automatically came up to touch his face. She stared into his deeply intense eyes and then she wrapped her arm around his neck to pull him closer. Woven into the kiss was the fear of losing each other, the unwavering devotion, and all the love they felt for each other.
In the Crashdown
"Lizzy's coming back to town!!!" Maria exclaimed, jumping around, shouting in a singsong voice.
When Maria danced by where Michael was sitting, he grabbed around the waist and pulled her into his lap. "Can't you ever shut-up?" he said.
Maria whipped her head around to look at him in complete shock. How could he be so rude?! When she saw the teasing glint in his eyes, she knew that he was just kidding.
"Well then, why don't you shut me up?" she bantered back.
Michael smiled his famous half-smile at her. "With pleasure." he said swooping in to capture her mouth.
Kyle and Tess were curled up in one of the booths at the back of the Crashdown, just enjoying the feel of being close together. They had gotten much closer over the last couple of months. They had their first kiss over a month ago in the Eraser Room at school and Michael and Maria had accidentally walked in on them.
"Hey! Alex, turn off the lights. They're coming!" Isabel called as she rushed into the Crashdown. "And will you guys just stop sucking-face for two seconds so we can give Liz a proper welcome back surprise party?" she said, lightly scolding Michael and Maria.
The next few seconds the group rushed to get into their hiding spots before Liz and Max came in. "Ow! Dammit!" Michael exclaimed in the dark as he ran into a chair. "Oomph!" Alex grunted as he tripped over the crumpled Michael and fell to the floor. Maria and Isabel just looked at each other and rolled their eyes. Kyle and Tess had slid down under the table they were at and were waiting patiently.
*Several minutes later*
Tess spoke up. "Isabel?" Where are they?"
Alex stood up and looked out the window to see Max and Liz sitting in the parked jeep, across the street, under a street lamp, making out.
"Uh, Iz?" he said and pointed at the couple.
Isabel groaned. "Oh God! This is gonna take forever! And as if I haven't seen them kiss enough!" she grumbled.
"Hey, don't one of you guys have some sort of a weird alien power to snap them out of it?" Kyle asked.
As is on cue, Max and Liz broke apart and smiled at each other. Even from the Crashdown, everybody could see that they were breathing heavily. Isabel groaned again. "Max better get her butt in here right now, or else I'm gonna go drag them in here myself!"
After Isabel's statement, Max and Liz got out of the jeep and headed towards the Crashdown, hand in hand. Everybody let out a tremendous sigh. Finally!!!
"Okay! Everybody, shh, shh, shhhhh!!!" Isabel hissed.
Max and Liz came into the Crashdown. *That's weird.* Liz thought to herself. *The door wasn't locked.* She pulled Max with her to the counter so she could turn on the lights. She pushed him up against the edge of the tabletop and began to assault his mouth as she reached for the light-switch.
When she flipped it on… *SURPRISE!!!* Everybody burst from their hiding spots. Liz jerked away from Max abruptly, completely embarrassed at being caught passionately kissing him… again.
She saw who it was she immediately was grateful that no adults were there to see her practically attacking Max. "Oh! You guys!!!" Liz gushed as she ran to go hug Maria, then Alex, then Isabel, then Kyle, and finally to the surprise of everyone, including herself, Tess. She spun around to look at Max.
"You!!!" she laughed. "You set me up! You knew they'd be here and you still let me do… that."
Max grinned at her. "Yup." he said proudly, pleased that she fell for it.
"You're gonna get it!" Liz exclaimed as she ran after him. He evaded her by jumping across the counter and breaking into a run across the restaurant. Everybody joined in the chase, laughing. It felt so good to be together again, as friends, with no rivalries against each other.
Max was on the plane on his way to Cambridge to join Liz at Harvard. After months of waiting, Max finally got his letter of acceptance to Harvard in the middle of July.
Liz was the one who found the letter and gave it to Max. She was so nervous -- even more than he was.
When he opened it, his face fell and he said, "Liz… I…"
"Oh my God…" Liz muttered.
Max continued as if he didn't hear her. "I guess, you're gonna have to put up with me for the next few years." He said trying to suppress his smile.
What he said hadn't quite processed, but when it did, she jumped right into his arms and hugged him.
"Oh my God, Max! You scared the hell out of me! God!" she said pulling back to look into his eyes, which were dancing with mirth. She threw herself into his arms again.
Max was so excited. He was going to surprise her because he wasn't due to be there for another week.
Liz beyond excited. Only 6 days, 8 hours, and 23 minutes until Max came to Harvard! She had drifted off again into her own little dream world.
"Hey, earth to Liz." said Emily teasingly. They were at the restaurant that Max and Liz went to all the time when he came after her way back in March.
"Oh, sorry, Em." Liz smiled sheepishly.
"Sheesh, girl! You've been back for less than 2 weeks and you already miss him so much!"
"I know. I just lo- I mean… care about him so much." the dreamy smile that was always on Liz's face when she talked about him was plastered on her face.
"You love him!" Emily exclaimed, "Everybody knows you do!"
Liz was shocked, "Who?!"
"Well… me and… um… Well, nobody, but whenever you even think about him, you're a goner. It's totally obvious!" Emily said.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Liz said, waving her hand in the air, trying not to blush.
After Emily and Liz had lunch, they had class again. "Okay, I'll meet you here after class!" Liz called out to Emily as they began to walk their separate ways."
Emily waved and gave her a thumbs up. "You got it!"
During class, Liz was shifting around in her seat, trying to be as unnoticeable as possible. She was so restless, today. She had stopped listening to the teacher a while ago and didn't even realize when the professor had stopped talking.
"Ahem. Ms. Parker is there a problem with your chair?"
Liz looked up, completely oblivious that she had been caught. "Um, no." she stated simply, confused at the teacher's inquiry.
The teacher quirked an eyebrow at her. "Then can you please stop squirming?"
Realization dawned on Liz then. She sank low into her chair, "Sorry." she mumbled. Thank God the class would be over in less than half and hour. That was so embarrassing! Usually she was intrigued with this class, but she just couldn't bring herself to pay attention.
When the bell rang she was so relieved. She gathered up her books and hurried out of class to find Emily. As she turned the corner to leave the classroom, she ran smack dab into a hard chest. Arms came around her waist, pulling her towards him.
Liz shoved him away and glared at him, but her eyes immediately softened when she saw who it was. A goofy grin spread across her face.
"Max!" she shrieked. "What are you doing here?!" she squealed as she dropped her books and flew into his arms.
"Going to school." he said calmly.
Suddenly, she pulled back and turned him, pushing him against the wall. He was confused for a second, until she grabbed his collar and pulled his face down to meet hers. Standing on tiptoe, she kissed him deeply, savoring the taste of him. She had missed kissing him so much.
Over the summer, she could see and touch him whenever she wanted, but ever since she had been back to school they could only talk over the Internet. When she pulled away, she smiled at him. "I missed you."
"I can see that." he said grinning at her. She flashed him another brilliant smile as she bent down to pick up her books.
When she stood up he took them from her and took her hand, interlacing their fingers. They walked out hand in hand.
"So, what do you wanna do?" Max asked Liz.
That reminded Liz that she had to meet Emily. "Oh, shoot. I have to go meet my friend, Emily."
"Okay." Max said. Liz led the way to the front of the building. Emily was sitting at a picnic table, reading her notes.
As Liz approached, Emily looked up and had to do a double take. *Man!* she thought to herself. *And I thought Liz looked happy when she thought about him!*
Liz waved at Emily. "Hey, Em! This is Max."
Max smiled warmly at Emily. "Nice to meet you." he said extending his hand.
Emily took it and shook it once. "Hey, Max! Liz has told me so much about you!"
Max smiled shyly at Liz as she sat down.
"Okay! Well, I'll leave you two lovebirds alone." said Emily with a knowing grin at Liz, as she began to gather up her notes.
Liz tried to say something, but Emily cut her off. "Later Liz. Gotta blaze." Emily seemed to be looking past Liz.
Liz turned around and saw a tall handsome looking guy leaning against a tree gazing intently at Emily. "Oh, I see. Later, Em!" but Emily had already walked over to the guy. Emily walked straight into his arms and kissed him gently on the lips without hesitation. It was as if it were the most natural thing in the world for them.
Liz then finally realized that Max and her were exactly the same way. She looked at him and he smiled at her.
"Liz, can I ask you something?"
"Yeah, sure Max, what's up?"
Max took a deep breath and let it out. Then he slid off the bench and got down on one knee. Liz's breath caught in her throat. She didn't think that she could feel anymore content at that moment when she realized the connection she shared with him, but Max always managed to make her even happier than she every dreamed possible.
"Liz, from the moment I first laid eyes on you, I've felt more connected to you than anybody else in my life. You were the most beautiful person I had ever seen and I thought to myself that if we ever became friends, I would be the happiest person alive. Even if you never found out the truth about me… because your friendship alone could let me die happy… but you did so much more for me. Not only did you accept me… you loved me. I never even dared to dream that you would ever accept me for what I am, but you did, and I'm eternally grateful. I knew that if we ever connected, I would never be able to let you go… and I would want you to always be mine… Liz, would you do me the honor of being mine forever and be my wife? Will you marry me?"
Tears were shining in both their eyes when Max finished. He pulled out a small velvet covered box and opened it. Inside was a gorgeous silver band laced with diamonds. Engraved on the inside of the silver band were the words, "I shall believe…"
Liz couldn't speak. She merely nodded. This small action caused the tears to overflow. When he slipped the ring onto her finger, she thought her heart would explode from the overwhelming exultation she felt. When the ring was on her finger he kissed her hand gently and smiled at her as his own tears streamed down his face.
"I love you." he whispered.
She finally found her voice, "I love you, Max. I'll always love you. And thank you for loving me."
He stood up and pulled her to him kissing her deeply.
He was the sweetest most caring man in the world. She hoped that she would, until the end of time, remember him this way.
Jordan Hill - Remember Me This Way
Every now and then
We find a special friend
Who never lets us down
Who understands it all
Reaches out each time we fall
You're the best friend that I've found
I know you can't stay
But a part of you will
Never ever go away
Your heart will stay
I'll make a wish for you
And hope it will come true
That life will just be kind
To such a gentle mind
If you lose your way
Think back on yesterday
Remember me this way
