Looking down at his best friend in the hospital bed, Clark couldn’t bottle up the swirl of emotions in his heart. Rage at the scumbag that nearly killed her. Fear that she won’t be back to her spunky, sarcastic self. Helplessness and guilt at not being there to catch her before she fell. And most strongly, love. The love of friends had always been there, but since the incident with Kyle and the kiss, he thought less and less about Lana except as a good friend. He was always able to leave Lana when it meant protecting someone else. His thoughts became more and more of this angel.
Kissing her forehead, he sat down and took her hand in his. “Chloe, I hate seeing you like this. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately. I know you can’t remember the kiss. I haven’t thought about Lana, except as a friend from then. There was someone I did think of, you. Chloe, the kiss opened my eyes. It meant a lot to me. I know it had to mean something to you. Kyle wouldn’t have been able to get you to do something against your very nature. I’m sorry that I couldn’t get there in time to save you. I love you, you’re my best friend. But you’re also so much more. Just get better. I’ll always be there to catch you when you fall, from now on. I won’t let anyone hurt you ever again.”
Unbeknownst to Clark, Chloe had been awake. “Clark, there was nothing you could do. I heard what you said to me. I’ll be okay. I don’t know if this is a dream. I’ve waited two years for you. I’m kinda glad you opened your eyes. The kiss, if I remembered it, would have meant so much to me. You know, Kent, I’m kinda high energy. Can you keep up with me heavily caffeinated?”
“I haven’t had any problems before.”
“Cute, Clark. Very cute.”
“Just like you.”
“You’ve got to be joking.”
“No, Chloe, you’re incredible.”
“I thought you were bad over Lana, but I’m not complaining.”
“We’re a team from now on. Kent and Sullivan, kinda like Woodward and Burstein.”
“That’s great, Clark, but it should be Sullivan and Kent. Since I’m editor, I set byline order.”
“How is everyone going to take it?”
“You two don’t have to worry about me. Clark, you never cease to surprise me. Chloe, I’m glad to see you awake. Mr. Sunshine over there hasn’t left your side since you were brought in. If he would have been able to, he would have been there when they set your arm. Have fun you two, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
“That kinda keeps our options pretty open, Clark. Thanks for the flowers. I feel like a triple crown winner. Lex, you know I was only joking.” A look of mock hurt crossed his face.
“Chloe, I’ve been around you enough to know when you’re trying to be Dorothy Parker. I’ve got to get back to the plant.”

“I’m going to find the ‘person’ who put you here, Chlo.”
“Clark, let the police find them.”
“Lex isn’t reporting anything stolen. I’m not sure how good the investigation will be. I can’t just sit here and wait. You could have been killed.”
“Clark, I don’t want you to get hurt!” Or you to hurt someone else.
“I’ll be careful.”
“That’s not good enough, Clark. Let the police handle it.”
“You know I can’t. If it was me in the hospital bed, can you honestly tell me that you wouldn’t want to find the person who put me there.”
“That’s not a fair thing to say, Clark. You know I would. If you are not going to take my wonderful advice, please be careful.” I don’t want to attend your trial.
“You know me, Chlo.”
I know you better than you think, Superboy.
Pete and Lana entered as Clark left. Seeing the flow of several emotions on Chloe’s face, Pete asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Pete, Clark is going to do something stupid. Keep an eye on him. Go! Go! Go!” Pete ran off, scared of the petite girl.
“Lana, I’m sorry about all the times I was a total bitch to you. I was jealous. Clark has had this thing for you for a long time. I’ve been in love with him for two years. He’s finally bought a damned clue and I couldn’t be happier. He’s going to find out who pushed me out a third-story window. I’m scared that he’ll do something stupid.”
“Chloe, he’s not going to get hurt. He has a reason not to. I was envious of you, too. You seem to not care what people think of you. You do what you want.”
“Lana, I do care what my friends think. Everyone else can go to hell. Maybe that’s why you’re popular and I’m not.”
“But at least you know who you are. I’ve been faking for so long, I don’t know what to do.” Chloe cringed mentally at Lana’s remark. She has been faking for sometime as well. I keep telling myself that Chloe Sullivan is just an act. She doesn’t exist. Once Dad gets enough evidence, she will probably die. Then she can go back to being Lois Lane.
