Summery: Jealousy, thy name is Michael.
Max and Michael looked up as Liz and Maria sat down next to them at the small table located in the bar that the 'Kit Shickers' were playing in. The girls were in mid conversation.
"Why does it take you so long in there? We've been waiting forever," complained Michael as he interrupted them.
Maria frowned as she looked over at him. "Excuse me! We were talking here. Besides, I've told you before, the lines in the ladies room are long. We can't just walk up, whip it out and go on like you guys can."
Liz cringed at Maria's description.
"No, you have to do your hair and make up and yak too," said Michael rolling his eyes as he took a drink of his coke and crunched on a piece of ice.
Maria's mouth dropped open indignantly.
Liz and Max could see another argument building between Michael and Maria and neither was eager to witness it.
"So did you two see Isabel while you were in there? I'm about ready to get out of here," said Max trying to ward off the pending argument.
Liz shook her head. "No. In fact I haven't seen her since she said she was going to get a drink. You know I think we made her feel uncomfortable, Max. I think she believes she's a 'fifth wheel' or something."
"But she's not a fifth wheel," said Max shaking his head. "I'm worried about her. I just want her to get over Jesse and move on."
"Yeah, well she should never have gotten involved with him to begin with," declared Michael emptying his glass. "We told her not to and look what happened."
"I know that and you know that, but Isabel was really hurt when he left her. I think she really believed it would work," said Max. He still got angry when he thought about how Isabel had cried when their Dad had gone over to tell her that Jesse had left signed divorce papers with him. Jesse had never even told her good-bye.
"I guess being here with two couples isn't exactly what she needed," said Liz ruefully.
"I hadn't thought of it that way. I just figured since it's been months and we are all friends that it was okay," said Max, feeling badly about not thinking things thru before asking Isabel to join them.
"I see Kyle over by the bar. I'll go ask him if he's seen her," said Maria heading off in that direction.
Michael's eyes followed her.
Maria walked up to Kyle and put her hand on his shoulder, smiling as she spoke to him.
Kyle looked up at her and smiled back, his head shaking as she asked about Isabel.
Michael's eyes began to roam the smokey room. They had come here to hear Jim Valenti's band and to get Isabel out of her apartment for some fun. So far it was a bust as far as fun goes.
His attention was drawn to a cowboy hanging on to a good looking woman who didn't seem to want his attention. His eyes narrowed and his hands clinched as he recognized the woman.
"Damn!" he said under his breath as he rose out of his seat and made his way to the crowded floor.
"What's wrong?" asked Max watching him leave.
Liz shook her head. "I don't know."
"So Kyle, the band sounds pretty good," commented Maria as she bobbed her head to the tune the Kitshickers were playing.
"Yeah, I'm sort of surprised that everyone loves them so much. Dad's got gigs booked nearly every night," said Kyle, his pride in his Dad showing.
He glanced towards the stage and his attention was caught by three people on the dance floor.
"I think Isabel's been found and by the looks of it trouble is about to start," said Kyle nodding in the direction of the dance floor.
Maria turned the direction of the dance floor and saw Michael heading towards where Isabel was dancing with a good looking cowboy.
"What's Michael think he's doing?" she asked as she moved away from Kyle.
Kyle shrugged. "I don't know, but he looks pissed."
Maria's expression took on a bemused look as she observed Michael's face. He did look pissed and that worried her.
This wasn't going to be good. She could just feel it.
Isabel laughed politely as she danced with a good looking cowboy. He had asked her to dance after spying her standing alone near the bar and she had finally agreed to do so after a lot of cajoling on his part.
"So you still haven't told me, what's a nice girl like you ..."
"...doing in a place like this? Come on now, surely you can think of a line a little more original then that," said Isabel smiling.
"Well, I guess I'm just not original. But I really would like to know what your doing here," he said as he held her close.
Isabel began to wonder if it had been a good idea to agree to dance with the cowboy. She wasn't looking for a relationship and she didn't want to mislead him. But sitting there watching Max and Liz and even Michael and Maria made her feel so alone. They tried to include her, but she felt like an intruder. Besides she hated the way Maria was always on Michael's case and that he let her get by with it.
"So, what's the story?" the cowboy asked again as his hands caressed her back.
Before Isabel could respond they heard a voice say, "I think you need to move along cowboy."
The cowboy and Isabel looked at Michael. Isabel recognized instantly that though Michael was outwardly calm, inside he was angry.
"Michael," Isabel said in warning tone of voice, but he ignored her. Those nearby grew quiet.
"I don't think you heard me cowboy. She's mine. Now move on."
Isabel's eyes widened at Michael's words, but she kept silent though inside she was seething.
"Look, I don't know who you are, but the lady doesn't seem to want to...."
Michael's eyes narrowed as he said, "You should have moved on cowboy." He grabbed the man and thrust him away from Isabel, his powers aiding in sending the cowboy flying into a nearby table.
"Michael! Don't!" yelled Isabel and Max, who had appeared by her side. Michael advanced on the stunned man now lying on the floor.
The crowd grew quiet and waited as Michael stood over the cowboy. "Stay away from her. Don't look at her. Don't talk to her. She belongs to me and no one....no one messes with what's mine," Michael quietly command as he punctuated each word with his finger in the air.
The cowboy nodded quickly before getting up and hurrying away.
Michael became aware of the quiet and looked around. His heart was beating rapidly and he could feel the heat warming his face in the aftermath of his confrontation. He blinked as he met Isabel's eyes.
She stood staring at him with a look of shock on her face. Beside her stood Max with Liz and Maria just behind them. Maria. Her face was white and tearful as she turned and left with Liz close behind.
Jim, seeing that things had settled down started the Kitshickers on another tune and the crowd moved back to having fun as if the disagreement had never happened. He looked worriedly at the aliens.
Michael moved towards Isabel, but she shook her head as she put up her hands to him and turned away.
"Don't." She walked past him and headed towards the door.
Max walked up to Michael and asked, "What was that all about?"
Michael stared after Isabel. "Hell if I know," he quietly replied.
"Well you better figure it out because we don't need that kind of attention on us." Michael could detect the anger in Max's voice and didn't blame him.
"I know," said Michael watching Isabel as she looked over her shoulder at him before heading out the door.
"Do you? Not only did you have a whole room watching your every room, but Maria is devestated and Isabel....did you see their faces?" asked Max.
Yeah, he'd seen their faces.
What the hell had made him act that way?
Michael became aware of pain in his hands and looked down. He had clinched his hands into fists so tight that his clipped nails had drawn blood. He stared at his hands as he again wondered what the hell had gotten into him.
"I said I'm sorry. What more do you want?" asked Michael as he sat at his bar listening to Maria's tearful tirade over the incident at the bar. She had come over a few minutes ago seeking answers that he didn't have.
"I want to know why? You have totally humiliated me in front everyone! Why? Why would you call Isabel yours? She doesn't belong to you, Michael! Why would you say that? I'm supposed to be the one you want," said Maria in a hurt tone.
Michael sighed as he again tried to explain. "You are. I...I just wanted the guy to leave Isabel alone. That's all."
Maria wiped at her eyes then folded her arms across her chest. "She didn't look upset with the attention he was giving her, Michael."
When Michael just frowned she added, "It's not the first time you've said Isabel belongs to you, Michael."
Michael swore to himself. "I was under the spell of the sign on my chest. I can't be held responsible for what I said while possessed."
"You're not Linda Blair, Michael! You can't claim you were possessed!" Maria told him angrily.
Michael slammed his hand down on the counter in frustration. "Look, no matter what I say you're going to jump all over my ass!" he exploded.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Maria demanded.
"I thought I was pretty clear!" Michael replied. He didn't need Maria jumping all over him right now. He needed to think.
"Are you saying that I'm being unreasonable in wanting my boyfriend to quit claiming his betrothed from another planet as his woman?"
"Yeah! You're blowing this all out of proportion!" yelled Michael. He didn't add that he didn't know why he had attacked the guy over Isabel, or that Maria was right to be upset.
Maria grabbed her purse. "I can't be with someone who professes to love me but tells an entire bar that another woman belongs to him!"
"So go!" Michael said as he watched her walk to the door.
"I'm will!" Maria turned and said.
"Fine by me! So go already!" said Michael quietly turning away.
Maria's mouth fell open before she opened the door and went out, slamming it behind her.
Michael jumped at the sound of the door slam then sighed.
What a mess.
Isabel finished washing her face and patted it dry. She looked in the mirror and could still see the tinge of anger in her eyes over the commotion Michael had caused tonight. Why did he have to keep bringing up the fact that they were together on Antar when they weren't here and were never going to be? He was with Maria and she was with...no one....again.
She flung the towel down on the counter and turned off the light as she exited the bathroom.
She pulled up short when she found Michael sitting on the chair in her bedroom.
"What are you doing here? Haven't you done enough tonight?" she said, her anger apparent to Michael.
He realized he had maybe been mistaken to come here when she was still mad and he honestly didn't need another person yelling at him. He stood up to leave, but then decided to go ahead with his reason for being there. "Look, I came to apologize to you, but I can see that was a mistake. If you don't want to accept it then fine," he told her gruffly. He really didn't care if she accepted his apology or not. Liar, he told himself. He did care.
Isabel stood there with her arms folded quietly assessing Michael's apology. He seemed sincere in his own way, but then again this wasn't the first time he had done something like this. However it was the first time he had apologized. Finally she nodded as she dropped her arms to place her hands on her hips.
"Okay. Thanks. Just, you know, don't let it happen again. This has to stop, Michael. You can't run off every guy I meet. I don't belong to you."
Michael met her eyes and after a second nodded then headed for the window.
"Use the door, Michael," Isabel told him as she rubbed her eyes wearily.
Michael stopped. "Yeah, well I sort of like the window," he said quietly before he made his exit.
Isabel walked over to the window and watched Michael hop the fence and then climb on his motorcycle.
A warm feeling along with sadness filled her as she watched him leave.
Turning away she headed for bed, but was stopped by the phone ringing.
"Iz, it's me. I was just making sure you're okay. You were pretty upset when you left tonight," said Max worriedly.
"I'm fine, Max. I was upset, but Michael's apology calmed me down."
"What?" The surprise was evident in Max's voice.
"Yeah, he came by here. I don't think even he knows why he acted the way he did. I just wish he would stop," said Isabel softly.
"I know, but he's concerned about you. We both are. After Jesse...."
"Don't go there, Max. Look, I'm tired. I'll talk to you later," said Isabel yawning over the phone. She was tired, but she also didn't want to discuss Jesse.
"Night Isabel," said Max.
Isabel hung up the phone. But instead of sleeping she lay thinking of Michael's actions that night and wondered what had brought them on.
The next day......
"Valenti! Customer!" yelled Kyle's boss.
Kyle came out of the garage wiping his greasy hands on an equally greasy rag.
"Guerin, what brings you here?" he asked as he spied the alien kneeling beside his motorcycle.
Michael stood up. "I need you take a look at my bike. My clutch is acting up. I tried to fix it but, ...." He shrugged and shook his head.
Kyle looked at the problem then said, "I can fix it. You'll need to leave it the afternoon though." Secretly he was pleased that there was something he could do the alien couldn't.
"Yeah, okay. I'll pick it up after work," said Michael.
Kyle looked at Michael and said, "You sure put on a show last night. I thought you were going to take that guy out for good."
Michael ignored Kyle as he asked, "What's it going to cost to fix the bike?"
"Don't worry, I'll make sure it's not alot" replied Kyle.
Michael eyed him a second then nodded. "Thanks."
"So are they still mad at you?" asked Kyle.
"Who?" asked Michael, but he had a good idea who Kyle meant.
"Maria. Isabel. They were really pissed at you last night," said Kyle shaking his head.
Michael didn't answer.
"Why'd you do it? You know, bust up Isabel's cowboy?" asked Kyle.
"He's not Isabel's cowboy," muttered Michael a bit sharply. He was beginning to clinch and unclinch his hands which Kyle noticed immediately.
"Yeah, I've noticed things aren't always as they seem where you all are concerned," said Kyle thoughtfully.
"What's that supposed to mean?" asked Michael.
Kyle shook his head. "Nothin'. Come back after work and I'll have your bike ready."
Michael nodded then headed for The Crashdown.
Kyle watched him go and shook his head as he headed back to his own work and his thoughts.
"Galaxy Burger hold the cheese," said Maria putting the order slip in the clip in the window. "Think you can manage that?" she asked sarcastically.
Michael waved his spatual at her without turning around.
Maria huffed and headed off.
Michael watched her go then sighed.
"She's still angry I see," said Max watching from the doorway to the grill area.
"She's always angry," said Michael flipping a burger.
"She has a right to be," noted Max watching his best friend add cheese to the burger.
Michael didn't answer.
"I talked to Isabel. She said you went over there last night and apologized," said Max.
"Yeah, so?" replied Michael assembling the Galaxy Burger.
He headed to the window and placed the order there to be picked up and rang the bell.
"That was quick. Must not be right," said Maria checking it over.
"It's right. Just take it out there," said Michael turning away.
"Probably fried it with those powers of his and now it'll taste bad," muttered Maria walking away.
Michael clinched his teeth, but kept quiet.
"Care to tell me now what that was all about last night?" asked Max watching his friend.
"There's nothing to discuss. Isabel shouldn't be encouraging guys when she knows there's no future with them," Michael replied.
Max stared at Michael incredulously. "You're serious!"
Michael looked at Max. "You and I both know that if you hadn't told Liz about us and she hadn't told Maria then we wouldn't be involved with them now. We weren't meant to be with humans. Isabel knows that too. She learned with Jesse that."
Max shook his head. "You and Maria fight, but that's normal for you two. Liz and I, we're different. You can't compare what we have to you and Maria or even to Isabel and Jesse."
"It's not about Maria and me. Okay, you and Liz it works for I guess. But Isabel, that's different. She's not meant to be with a human." Michael placed a basket of fries in the fryer and watched while the grease spat out at him.
Max frowned. "Then who?"
Michael shrugged. "What are you asking me for? All I know is that you agreed with me in High School and when she started dating Grant and again when she dated Jesse. She shouldn't date humans. Look, I've got to get back to work."
"Okay, but at some point you and I will have to talk about this," said Max.
"Not if I can help it," replied Michael to himself.
Max was sitting at the counter talking to Liz when Jim Valenti sat down beside him.
"Max...Liz," greeted Jim.
"Sheriff," returned Max. It didn't matter to them that Jim was no longer Sheriff of Roswell, he would still be Sheriff to them.
"What will you have?" asked Liz smiling.
"The Special is fine," said Jim.
When Liz went to turn in the order Jim asked, "What happened with Michael last night?"
Max shook his head. "I don't know. I don't think he knows either."
"Well I thought for sure he was going to kill that guy," remarked Jim.
Max nodded. "I know. I worried about that too. But I think it's okay now. He was just upset with Maria I think and took it out on that guy." He didn't really believe that, but he didn't know what else to say.
Jim didn't believe it either. Why would Michael take his problems with Maria out on Isabel's dance partner? And telling the guy that Isabel belonged to him? No, something else was going on.
The door of The Crashdown opened and Isabel walked in with a guy from her Sociology class.
They settled in a booth and began pouring over the books they had brought with them to study for their test.
Liz walked over and took their order for Alien Blasts and Saturn Rings and went to turn it in.
"Who's that with Isabel?" asked Maria standing near the order window as she waited on another order.
Liz shrugged. "I think he's in her class. I think it's a study date."
Michael's head popped up. His eyes quickly scanned the seating area and located Isabel and some guy studying. He could feel the heat beginning in his face and the back of his neck. He kept working, but his eyes seemed to roam back to the two in the booth.
"Order up!" he called and rang the bell.
"Hey, I turned in my order first!" said Maria.
"She only had Saturn Rings. You have more. Cool your jets and you'll get yours," said Michael.
"Is that Isabel's order?" asked Maria suspiciously.
"Damn it, Maria! Will you lay off already!" Michael replied testily.
He looked up as Liz sat the order infront of Isabel and the college boy.
Isabel took a bite and must have missed her mouth because the college boy laughed and leaned over to wipe at her lip with his fingers.
Michael's blood boiled and he began to sweat. He wiped at his brow with his arm. His hands gripped the counter as he watched the college boy laugh at something Isabel said.
Michael's fingers dug into the countertop creating holes from his alien strength.
He watched as Isabel pulled a pencil from behind her ear, a piece of her hair falling in the process.
The college boy reached over and tucked the hair back behind her ear causing Isabel to start at his actions.
"Damn it! I warned her!" Michael gritted out as he yanked off his apron and tossed it aside before heading out the kitchen door to the dining area. He stomped over to the booth where Isabel and the college guy sat.
"Keep your hands to yourself college boy!" he ordered sharply.
Isabel looked up in surprise that turned quickly to alarm. "Michael, what are you doing?"
Michael ignored her as he addressed the college guy. "You've picked the wrong woman to study with. She's taken, so why don't you get your books and get out of here."
The startled college guy was ready to stand up to Michael, but one look at the angry alien changed his mind. He quickly gathered his books and with a look of apology to Isabel, quickly left.
Isabel stood up in anger. "What's wrong with you, Michael?!"
Michael reached out and grabbed Isabel by the upper arms causing her to wince in pain. "I told you to stay away from other guys, Isabel and I meant it!"
Isabel's face turned white at his words then grew red as her anger took over again.
Max and Jim quickly made their way to the two aliens who had effectively caused the Crashdown crowd to stop and stare.
"In the back, now!" ordered Max quietly.
"Let go of me, Michael. You're hurting me," said Isabel wincing.
Michael blinked then looked at his hands on Isabel's arms and released her. He saw the red marks that would bruise.
He looked at Isabel in horror. "Isabel, I'm...I'm sorry. I don't know...."
Isabel's look cut him off.
"In the back you two before something else happens," said Jim escorting them to the back.
"It's okay folks. Just a little misunderstanding," said Jim to the crowd. "Go back to your food."
In the back Michael faced not only Isabel, Max, and Valenti, but an angry Maria as well. Liz came in behind them.
"Who the hell do you think you are, Michael?! You told me you would stop meddling in my private life like that!" said Isabel in a controlled voice.
"I'm not meddling in your life!" he shot back, though honestly he didn't know what he was doing.
"You promised me last night that you wouldn't do this anymore! Gawd, what's wrong with you? Why can't I have a life too?" Isabel demanded.
"You can! I meant what I said last night! Just not with humans!" he told her.
Isabel rolled her eyes. "Then that leaves me with no one Michael!"
"Fine by me!" he said crossing his arms.
The room got quiet.
Maria's mouth dropped open and Liz held on to her.
"Michael, you don't mean that. You don't really want Isabel to be alone," said Max.
"She's not alone. She has us," Michael replied dropping his arms. But even to him it sounded selfish.
"It's not the same and you know it!" said Isabel with quiet force while she shook her head. "How can you want me to be alone? Never having someone to love? Why would you want that for me?"
Michael stared at her. He wanted to say something to make it right, but he held his silence.
"Michael, son, can I talk to you alone?" asked Jim.
Michael's gaze went from Isabel to Jim.
"Please?" said Jim.
Finally after one more glance at Isabel he nodded. "Yeah."
"Liz, can we use your upstairs?" asked Jim.
"Sure," she replied.
Michael and Jim headed upstairs.
"So are you going to start in on me now too?" Michael asked.
"No, I just want to talk. See if we can figure out why you are having these outbursts towards guys Isabel goes out with," said Jim sitting on the sofa. "Do you mind?"
Michael started to object then nodded. "No, I want to know too," he said flopping down next to Jim. He thought of Jim as a Father figure and someone he respected and trusted with his life
Jim thought about the question that was in the upper most part of his mind.
"Micheal, how do you feel about Isabel? I mean aside from the fact that she is a fellow alien," said Jim.
Michael shrugged. "I don't know."
"When did you start noticing that you didn't like Isabel dating?" Jim asked.
"Shouldn't be dating," corrected Michael.
"Okay, why do you think that is?" Jim asked, trying to get Michael to break it down.
"Because we're alien! She can't let anyone know!" said Michael, like Valenti should understand.
"Is that all? Did you feel this way before you and Maria started dating?"
Michael thought about it then admitted. "Yeah, I did."
"How long?" asked Jim.
"I don't know! Always I guess," said Michael uncomfortabley.
Michael jumped up. "How the hell should I know! Maybe they programmed me that way!" he snapped.
Jim tried another tactic. "Okay, then what if Maria had never come into the picture? What do you think would have happened?"
Michael frowned. "You mean do I think Isabel and I would have been an automatic thing?"
Michael sat down again and looked at his hands before pushing them against his closed eyes as a revelation occurred.
"Why not?" asked Jim sitting forward.
It took a minute before Michael dropped his hands and replied.
"Because she doesn't want me."
Jim sat back taking Michael's words in. "What makes you say that, son?"
Michael looked down at his hands. "There've been things....times when we could have been together and she chose not to. She chose Jesse."
"Yes, she did. But it seems to me that when you found out you were together on Antar that you did some running too," said Jim.
"Because we were preparing for an enemy that we had never seen," replied Michael.
At Jim's silence Michael continued to the heart of it. "Besides she never really tried to stop me from seeing Maria. If she cared she would have tried harder to stop me. But she didn't. She does all these sisterly things for me instead. She's not my sister!"
"And Maria? Did you just use her to make Isabel jealous?" He hoped that wasn't the case. Maria was like a daughter to him just like Isabel. He didn't want to see either one hurt, but one would be hurt.
"I'm not trying to make her jealous!" said Michael as if the thought were totally ridiculous.
"Are you sure?" asked Jim.
Michael was quiet.
"Is this jealousy thing with Isabel about past history?"
Michael shook his head. "No."
Then he started saying things he never thought to admit to anyone, especially to himself. "At first I just wanted what Max had. He and Liz had this thing that I wanted. I knew living with Hank that I wasn't good enough for Isabel. She's had everything. What could I give her? But Maria, was different. We've had fun, we've argued, shared stuff, even slept..." He glanced at Jim. Maybe he better not share that.
"I just don't feel that all consuming love for her. Not like...." he stopped. Aw damn, no. No. He covered his face with his hands.
"Not like who son?" asked Jim gently.
Michael looked away confused.
"Michael, not like who?" pressed Jim.
Michael swallowed. "Isabel."
Jim put his hand on Michael's back. "I guess you have your answer."
Michael shook his head. "All this did was make me realize that I love someone who doesn't love me the way I love them."
"No, what it did was show you what you have to do now. You have to let her know how you feel."
Michael abruptly stood up. "No! She made her decision and I won't make a fool of myself trying to get her to love me."
Jim stood as well. "Well Michael, it seems to me that the way you're acting now you're already playing the fool. So why not try and change her mind? Or who knows, maybe you've read her wrong the whole time."
With that last bit for Michael to chew on, Jim left.
A few days later.......
"Isabel, you going to eat that slice of pizza?" asked Kyle pointing to the last piece.
Isabel shook her head. "No, you go ahead." She had barely touched the one slice she had.
Kyle took a huge bite and chewed thoughtfully. "So, anymore outbursts from Michael lately?"
Isabel picked up the empty pizza box and carried it the kitchen. "No. In fact I haven't seen him at all."
Kyle noted that she didn't seem to happy about that. Just the opposite in fact considering what Michael had been putting her and any man she innocently came into contact with through.
"Well he's probably afraid that you're going to take his head off or something," said Kyle popping the last bite in his mouth.
Isabel returned and sat down on the sofa next to Kyle. "I just don't understand why he acted the way he did."
"Maybe he's jealous," replied Kyle watching her reaction.
Isabel rolled her eyes, but he could see moisture in them.
"Yeah right. Michael jealous. Maybe over some guy with Maria, but not with me." She shook her head as she tucked a leg beneath her, "No, he just doesn't want anymore outsiders to know our secret. And I'm paying the price."
"He's told enough people that you belong to him. Sounds like jealousy to me," said Kyle.
"I know, and I don't understand that," Isabel replied hugging a throw pillow to her chest. She had spent many sleepness nights going over in her mind what Michael had said or done since his outbursts had begun. None of it made any sense. She had also gone over her own actions. What she found was disturbing.
"Would it be a bad thing if he was jealous?" asked Kyle picking at the sole of his shoe.
"He's with Maria. Their 'on again-off again' relationship is well known," replied Isabel twirling her hair.
"That's not what I asked you," Kyle said as he looked Isabel in the eye.
"Kyle, he's not jealous," said Isabel.
"For the sake of the conversation just say he was. Would it be bad?" Kyle asked.
Isabel bit her lip and looked away.
"How do you feel about him?" asked Kyle. "He was to be your mate here like he was on that planet you came from. What is it that kept you two apart here?"
A lone tear trickled down Isabel's cheek.
"Isabel?" Kyle said softly.
"He didn't want me."
"What do you mean he didn't want you? Why not?" asked Kyle curiously.
Isabel shook her head. "I don't know. I tried to help him, you know with Hank and school and when he moved out on his own, but all he wanted...was Maria. He was going to stay for her, Kyle. He wanted her, not me."
"But if all of that had been different, if he had wanted you, would you have chosen him too?" persisted Kyle.
Another tear joined the one now trailing her chin. "Yes," she whispered.
Kyle walked in the door of his house and found Jim sitting on the couch watching a football game.
"You were right," Kyle said as he closed the door.
Isabel sat on her bed deep in thought as she applied lotion to her arms. Her actions slowed as she recalled her conversation with Kyle.
"I'm such an idot," she groaned.
She lay down on her bed and closed her eyes. She was so tired. She hadn't slept in days and wanted to sleep, but her thoughts kept going back to Michael. Had she misread everything? No, she couldn't have. He chose to stay here for Maria and when the dreams didn't pan out he ran back to her too. If he had been even slightly interested in her then he would have told her long ago. Wouldn't he?
She got up and went to her dresser and retrieved a picture of her with Michael. Carrying it back to her bed she held it cradled in her hands.
"I know I promised you I would never dream walk you, but I have to know."
She lay down and placed her finger tips on the picture of Michael and was soon walking into his dreams.
................Michael rubbed Isabel's hair between his fingers. "So soft," he whispered against her ear. "Like you."
Isabel's eyes closed as his breath caressed her skin. "Michael," she breathed out softly.
"You taste like spiced honey," he whispered as his lips moved against her mouth.
"Please Michael...." Isabel whimpered, her hands moving to his face.
Michael's hands moved along her slender waist, up her sides to cup her heaving breasts through her gown. He gently squeezed the globes eliciting a moan of desire from Isabel.
"Tell me," he whispered.
"I love you," she panted against his mouth.
"I love you too," he whispered just before his mouth claimed hers......
Isabel woke with a start. Her body was warm and aching with a need that wouldn't be fullfilled that night.
"Oh my gawd," she whispered as she looked down at the picture clutched in her hand. "Oh my gawd."
A few days later......
Michael sat lifting weights wondering when he would see Isabel again. Somehow they had missed one another for almost two weeks now and he was going crazy. She was avoiding him. Maybe he should leave. He wasn't with Maria anymore. He was ruining Isabel's life and there wasn't any other reason to stay.
He would truely be on his own if he left, thought Michael slowly putting the weights down.
A knock sounded and Michael headed to the door to open it.
"So are you going to invite me in?" she asked quietly.
Michael stood aside. This couldn't be good.
"What do you want?" he asked as he moved to pull on his shirt.
"Do you love Isabel?" Maria asked bluntly.
Michael paused then continued to straighten up his shirt.
"Am I? You've been acting insane, Michael. No guy does that unless he's in love?" said Maria watching his face.
"I seem to recall acting this way when your friend with the guitar came. I lost control of my powers if your recall," replied Michael picking up his Snapple bottle and taking a drink. "Want one?"
Maria shook her head. "Yeah you lost control of your powers, but ....."
"Like you said, I stayed for you. What more do you want?" asked Michael abruptly. He took another drink.
"You call her name when we have sex," she quietly said.
Michael choked on the Snapple and wiped his mouth as he looked at Maria.
"What?" He didn't want to believe he'd done that. "I never...."
"You did. More than once," she told him with tears beginning to trail down her cheeks.
What does a guy say to that?
"You love her, Michael. I didn't want it to be true, but it is. You love her don't you?"
Michael put the bottle on the counter and sat on a bar stool. He didn't know what to say.
"I've known it for a while, and I hoped that when Isabel married Jesse that would be the end of it, but it wasn't. It never will be because you'll never stop loving her. From one life to another you still love her," said Maria.
She walked to the door. "Goodbye, Michael."
The next day.......
"What do you mean your leaving?" asked Jim frowning.
"I can't destroy her life anymore. If I leave she can have a life," said Michael.
"You're making a mistake, Michael. Tell her how you feel," encouraged Jim.
Michael shook his head. "No. I'm leaving after my shift tonight. I just wanted to tell you thanks...for everything."
Jim sighed. "I wish you'd give this more time."
Michael shook his head again. "I've decided."
Jim stook out his hand and shook Michael's before pulling him to him in an embrace. "Take care son."
Michael nodded as he hugged back the only man he'd ever felt was a Father to him.
Isabel slowly sat down in shock. "He's leaving? Why?"
Kyle sat beside her. "He doesn't want to ruin your life anymore is what he told my Dad."
Panic began to fill Isabel. Her throat began to constrict and her breathing labored. "Oh gawd, I can't breathe! Kyle, I can't breathe!" gasped Isabel.
Kyle jumped up and retrieved a paper bag and some water. "Here. Breathe into here real slow," he told her.
Isabel did as she was instructed while Kyle rubbed gentle circles on her back. Soon Isabel felt her breathing return to normal. She put down the bag and took the water Kyle handed her.
"What are you going to do about him leaving, Isabel?" asked Kyle.
"What can I do?" she replied wiping her eyes.
"Tell him how you feel," said Kyle handing her a tissue.
Isabel thought about Michael's dream and her own feelings for him. Could she tell him? Would he stay?
"What if he still leaves, Kyle?" she said.
Kyle felt some hope and pressed on. "What if he doesn't? Could you live with yourself for not trying?"
Isabel looked at Kyle. "You really think so?"
"Isabel, you'll never get another chance," said Kyle taking her hand in his.
Isabel met his eyes and nodded.
Michael shut off his bike and started up the walk to his apartment. He was gathering his stuff and leaving a short note for Max and one for Isabel explaining his decision. He opened his door and frowned as the lights failed to come on when he flipped the switch. He'd paid the bill and there wasn't a black out. He wondered what was up.
That's when his nose picked up a scent that he was all to familiar with. Isabel's scent.
He heard fingers snap and a few candles lit up revealing Isabel walking up to face him.
"What are you doing here?" he asked with a mixture of happiness and confusion.
She stood before him now. They were so close he could feel the warmth of her breath. It smelled of cinnamon.
"Is it true?" she asked quietly.
Michael tensed. "Is what true?"
"Are you leaving?" Was that quavering he heard in her voice he wondered.
He finally nodded. "Yeah. I think it's best."
Isabel stared up at him. "For who? You?"
"You," he told her quietly. "If I leave then I can't ruin your life anymore."
Isabel swallowed as she blinked back tears that were forming. "If you leave my life will be ruined."
Michael's brows went up at her words. "I don't understand."
Isabel placed her hands on Michael's chest very lightly. She could feel his heart pounding beneath her hand. Her touch lit a fire in Michael. She licked her lips, the movement making Michael lick his own.
"Please don't leave," she whispered.
Michael covered her hands with his for a moment then he removed hers from his chest and held them.
"I have to," he replied letting go and moving away. He couldn't handle this. Why was she begging him to stay when she had accused him of trying to control her life?
"Michael." Her voice was tearful.
He didn't face her. He couldn't.
"I love you," she whispered.
Michael's ears were ringing with her words while his heart beat uncontrollably.
He turned to face her.
"Please don't leave me," she whispered, the tears streaming down her face.
His shook his head slowly not comprehending. "What?"
Isabel took a step forward. "I....I couldn't stand what was happening. So I .....I dreamwalked you. I found out you feel as I do."
Michael's eyes widened. "You what?"
"I know I promised to never dreamwalk you, but I had to know what was making you act like you were and....."
"How long have you felt this way about me?" he interrupted her. He was stunned.
Isabel raised her hands to her lips then clasped them at her throat. "Forever."
Michael felt both hopeful and afraid at the same time.
"Why didn't you tell me? You always seemed like you didn't want anything to do with me like that."
"No, you didn't want me! You wanted Maria. You were going to stay for her, Michael!" Isabel cried.
"No, I was staying because my home was here. Not in space somewhere on a planet I didn't know! It just took a while to figure out that you were right," said Michael.
"What? But you said...." said Isabel.
"No, Maria said. I never said I stayed for her. Everyone just assumed I did. I thought you would stay with me, but you chose to go with Max. You never fought to take me from Maria so I just stayed with her. You wanted guys like Grant and Jesse that were better than me," said Michael bitterly.
"But what about when we thought I was pregnant? You ran in relief to her when we found it wasn't true!" said Isabel.
"No, I ran to someone who wanted me. You didn't want a kid with me," said Michael.
Isabel stared. "I wanted it, Michael, but we were so young and didn't understand what was happening to us or what it meant. I was scared. It hurt when you ran back to her as soon as Max said it wasn't true."
Michael didn't say anything.
"Kyle said we had mixed signals. Is he right?" asked Isabel.
Michael's eyes widened. "Valenti said the same thing."
"Do you believe it's true?" Isabel asked. He heard the hope and regret in her voice. It matched his own feelings.
"I know that I've loved you for as long as I can remember and it took me a long time to realize it," said Michael still a bit afraid to admit it.
"Me too," said Isabel with the barest hint of a smile.
"So what do you suggest we do about it?" said Michael walking towards her slowly.
"I want you to kiss me," she replied tilting her head up.
Michael searched her eyes and then did as she wished.
It was a hesitant kiss at first, but soon both realized that it was what they had been yearning for and it deepened. Isabel's arms went around Michael's neck and he pulled her close. It felt familiar and right.
When Michael finally broke the kiss he and Isabel stood struggling to breathe as they clung to one another afraid to let go.
"Does it feel like we've done this before?" he asked as he pressed his forehead to hers.
Isabel nodded. "But it's more than the dreams we had. It's...."
"I know. Isabel, I can't let you go," said Michael claiming her mouth again.
Isabel gasped for air. "Please don't leave..."
Michael kissed her brow as his hands wandered along her back and sides. "I won't. I couldn't now even if I wanted too. You're in my blood. You always have been, I just didn't know it."
Isabel gazed up into his eyes. Michael saw just how much she loved him reflected there. "Isabel." He said her name almost in awe.
She smiled up at him, a bright smile of happiness. "Do you feel like your insides are flipping out of control?" she whispered. She kissed then nuzzled his neck.
Michael looked down at her as he cupped her face. "Are you sure you want me?" He still couldn't believe it.
Isabel's face softened as she said, "I thought I knew what love was, but I was wrong. I'm happier now than I've ever been in my life."
Michael kissed her deeply, his mouth reveling in her taste.
"It's getting late," he said as he gaze fell on the clock.
"I don't want to go," said Isabel laying her head on his chest. She could hear his heart beating and she took comfort in it.
Michael sucked in his breath as his arms pulled her tighter against him. "Then don't." His invitation was out there, and he waited with baited breath to see what she would say.
Isabel didn't move. She didn't know what to say.
Michael took pity on her. "Look, we can talk. Maybe kiss some more," he told her. "Nothing else has to happen."
Isabel swallowed to wet her mouth, but it was still dry.
"Can I have some water?"
Michael looked down. "What? Yeah," he said as he let her go to get the water.
Isabel wrapped her arms around her waist and watched Michael get her water. He loved her. He dreamed of her and he had told her as well, something she never thought to hear him say. And she loved him too.
Michael returned with the water.
"I added ice," he told her as he wiped his hands on his pants.
"Thanks," said Isabel as she took a drink. She held the glass in her hands thoughtfully then set it aside. She looked up at Michael and said nervously, "I'll stay."
Michael's face registered surprise before he smiled. "We can talk."
Isabel shook her head. "No."
She walked up to him and took one of his hands in hers and looked at the lines of his palm. "You're hands are very large," she said as she ran her finger tips over the lines.
"I guess," Michael replied. Then he started as Isabel placed his open hand on her full breast and looked up at him.
"Isabel, we don't have to do this. I can wait."
"I know," she told him as she leaned forward to kiss the fullness of his lips.
He placed a hand under her chin. "Look at me."
When she did Michael said, "You know what could happen if we do this."
"I know," she said. She'd thought about it alot actually, and she knew that if there were consequences they would accept it.
Michael kissed her. A long, satisfying kiss that took her breath away.
His hand moved to her breast to kneed it, the nipple underneath pebbled under the shirt and bra she wore.
Isabel moaned as Michael's tongue moved around her ear and neck leaving little shivers of pleasure.
Her own hands wandered to his shirt and began to pluck out the buttons until she found his bare skin underneath. She pushed the material aside and began to place small kisses on his chest. Michael gave the barest of shivers as he enjoyed her lips on his skin.
In his haste to remove her shirt he ripped the material, but he didn't care. He tossed it aside and began to slide her bra straps down so he could unhook the back. Her breasts sprang free and rubbed against his skin, the feeling sending shocks through both of them.
Michael lowered his mouth to kiss his way down her neck...her chest....to a succulent breast and he feasted on it, laving it with his tongue until Isabel wimpered.
"Miiichaellll," she begged, her hands moving to his waist. She couldn't get the button free and it frustrated her.
"Let me," he panted. His hands removed the button and they both worked to move the zipper down.
Isabel pushed at the pants until they slid to the floor and then reached for his boxer waist.
His hands stilled hers. She looked up.
"After this there's no turning back. Stop now or not at all," he told her.
She kissed him then slowly pushed the boxers down. He sprang into her hand pulsing with life.
Isabel's eyes grew. He was much larger than she thought and it both thrilled and frightened her.
She ran her hands over the smooth, throbbing life in her hands exploring it fully.
Michael sighed as her soft hands moved along his hardness. He wanted her. Not because she was a woman to be desired. Not because it was ordained on some planet far off in space. He wanted her because he loved her and wanted to please her.
He bent her back on to the bed, laying her down and moving beside her until they were nearly one.
His eyes moved down her body following the trail of his hand as he explored her hills and valleys.
"You're more beautiful than in our dreams," he said. He lowered his head to her breast and took her nipple in his mouth, sucking slowly and tortureously until Isabel lay aching for more.
Michael ran his hand between her legs parting them. His fingers grazed her mound lightly before sliding into her moist heat.
She quivered as his fingers rubbed her hardned nub, her juices flowing faster with each caress of his fingers. She bucked as her body responded to his hands and came against them in her release.
Michael moved between her legs and looked in Isabel's eyes.
She smiled at him with a gentle smile to let him know she was okay. She wanted him too.
Michael moved until his body was one with Isabel's. He stilled letting her adjust to him, her walls contracting around him pulling him in deeper.
Then he moved.
Isabel gasped at the feel of him, thrilled to be one with him. She began to rock with him, moving with a fluid grace that lovers develop over time, but that they seemed to know instinctively.
He was deep within her, touching her where she didn't know she could be touched when the feeling of warm fire began in them. It wasn't painful, but a delicious feeling that kept growing, begging them to follow it.
Michael felt Isabel's body responding to his and strived harder to bring her to completion before he lost himself in her. He'd never felt anything like this with Maria and wondered if this was what Max had felt with Tess. No, it was better. It had to be. Max hadn't loved Tess.
Isabel's back arched and her legs wrapped tighter around Michael as she started to cry out.
"Awwwww...." she gasped then closed her eyes as Michael carried her to fullfillment.
Isabel's cry was all Michael needed to finish inside her. He felt his warm seed pour into her and he shuddered against her until he was spent.
He lay still inside her not wanting to move and knowing he couldn't even if had wanted too.
"Do you feel it, Michael?" asked Isabel in awe. "Oh gawd, do you feel it?"
And he did. The pleasure that had rolled over them minutes ago was sweeping over them again and again.
"What's happening?" Isabel asked wide eyed as she and Michael clung to one another.
Michael gasped. "Alien...orgas...ams....oh gawd!" he cried out as the last one hit them the strongest of all.
"Are you okay?" he asked her panting.
Isabel nodded. "Perfect." She looked at him. "I love you, Michael."
Michael smiled as Isabel closed her eyes totally worn out. He kissed her forehead and sighed as he pulled her closer and closed his own eyes.
He had what he had dreamed of.
And he was happy.
