"I really think it's over," I heard him say as I entered the hall. I had hoped to find him, to tell him that I had made a horrible mistake ... that I loved him. All of those thought left my mind as I heard those words escape from his lips. Then he kissed her. I mean REALLY kissed her. I knew that passion... It used to be for me.
I ran out of the hall, away from the prom, away from my 'soulmate', unnoticed by him and his Barbie. But someone did notice. Someone did care...
"Liz!", his husky voice rang in my ears.
"Michael, I am not in the f⊕*&^#! mood," I said harshly, before turning around to find him standing near the door with a sympathetic look upon his face. I quickly regretted it.
"Liz, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry," Michael said, pulling me into a hug. His words had a double meaning. Apparently, he had seen it too. Confused, hurt, angry, and betrayed, I stood, held in Michael's arms, crying for dear life. He could only whisper three words.
"Max and Tess..."

Maria had had to go to the bathroom, so we stopped dancing. I decided to go too. I was walking down the hall, on my way back to the dance, when I spotted Maxwell. Then, I saw it. Max touched her cheek and then... Liz. She was running out of the door.
"Damn it Maxwell..." I whispered as I ran after her. I reached the door and called her name. Her response stung. I didn't know why, but I cared. It killed me to see her in pain. The look on her face made the anger I felt for Maxwell escalate, but all I could say was, "Liz, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry." It was true. I was sorry. I was sorry that I had angered her, urging her harsh response. I was sorry for what she had seen. Most of all, I was sorry for what I knew would eat her up inside.
She stood in my arms, crying, and I clung to her as if my own life had depended on it. He didn't deserve her. I couldn't believe it..."Max and Tess..." Once I said those words, I knew. I knew that nothing would ever be the same.

Ch. 1

"Michael, I need that order," Liz yelled through the window.
"All right already," Michael said, putting a plate in her hand.
"It's about time," she mumbled, turning around.
"You're welcome," he yelled after her.
"Geez, that girl has been like a stonewall for the past week. She kindda reminds me of you. I wonder what happened. Oh well, I'll just ask her about it later," Maria said, looking after Liz. "So 'Spaceboy', feel like takin' a break?" She asked, turning her attention to Michael.
"Not now, Maria," Michael said, turning around. "Not ever," he mumbled, under his breath.
It had been a week since Liz and Michael had seen Max and the Gerbil at the prom, and he was right. It wasn't the same. Max and Tess stayed away from the others, omitting Mike and Iz from that statement. no one even knew that they were together, but Michael, Isabel, and of course, Liz. Liz... she had changed drastically in the past week. She closed off all emotion, but anger and contempt. Well, that's what it looked like from the outside, but only one person got to see her on the inside. Michael. They had grown really close over the past week. Close? Hell, the were practically joined at the hip. It was amazing that no one noticed the way they were always together. 'Ding, ding', the bells on the Crashdown's doors jingled. In came Max. "Perfect," Michael groaned as Max slide into a vacant booth.
"Hey, what can I get for you?" Liz asked, her voice stacked with sarcasm.
"Liz, we need to talk," he stated simply.
"I'm a busy woman, MAXWELL. I don't have time for this, or for you," she said with venom.
Max visibly flinched at her tone, and choice of words. He had never heard her call him Maxwell. The word seemed wrong as they rolled off of her tongue. "Liz..." he said pleadingly.
"Okay, you've got two minutes, and I suggest that you make 'em count."
"Okay, there isn't an easy way to say this, so I'll just say it," Max started.
"I already know about you and Tess," Liz said calmly.
"What? I mean, how?" he asked, confused.
"It was kindda hard to miss, with your tongue shoved down her throat at prom," Liz spat out, standing up. Before Max could respond, Liz walked away.
A song started to play on the jukebox, and he listened to the words as he watched her retreating figure, slip away. It was amazing how well the lyrics seemed to fit.
You and me
We used to be together
Every day together always

I really feel
I'm losing my best friend
I can't believe
This could be the end

It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real,
Well I don't want to know

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

Our memories
They can be inviting
But some are altogether
Mighty frightening

As we die, both you and I
With my head in my hands
I sit and cry

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

It's all ending
I gotta stop pretending who we are...
You and me
I can see us dying ... are we?

Don't speak
I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts
Don't speak
I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me 'cause it hurts

The words raced through his mind. He looked around, and saw her talking to Michael. "Good-bye, Liz," he whispered, standing up. Her turned from her, and walked out of the jingling doors.

CH. 2

"Mikey, I just don't know what to do with him! I know that it's over, and I accept that, well actually, I made that happen, but.... I don't know!" Liz complained to Michael. She had just ended a very heavy conversation with Max, and was releasing all of her frustrations onto Michael.
Michael had been watching the entire thing play out, from the back room, and when she got up from the booth, she came and talked to him. It had been a ritual for the past week. Something happened to Liz, she'd come to him and let it all out. The first time being the night of prom. After Liz let go of him, they sat in the quad and talked. She had been pretty upset, and said some things that Michael had never heard her say. She was talkin' a hell of a lot about Tess, or the Gerbil, as she had so kindly nicknamed her. She had even come up with one for Max. Prick. She seemed to be on a roll, making up nicknames, hence the name Mikey... Don't ask. Why he let her call him that, he didn't know.
"Okay, Liz. How 'bout we grab some ice cream, and head to my place? We'll watch Alien Resurrection, and you can pretend that the monster is the Prick," Michael offered to Liz.
Liz smiled and looked up at him. "Chocolate Fudge Brownie?" Liz asked.
"Of course!" Michael exclaimed. "We'll leave after our shift," he said. He had no clue why he was being so sweet to Liz. It just seemed to fit him, like it came naturally, and he actually enjoyed the feeling. Liz had proven to be a great friend. Although, it was him being a friend to her at that moment.
Liz nodded. "Okay, thanks Mikey," she said, walking back into the main room. She greeted Maria with a cheerful smile, on her way out.
"One minute she's hostile, the next, she's a member of the Mickey Mouse Club," Maria said, coming to a stop beside Michael.
"She's been through a lot," Michael told her, immediately jumping to her defense.
"OK, 'Spaceboy'. Calm down. It was just an observation," Maria said pointedly. "So.... How 'bout I come over after my shift?" Maria asked with a suggestive smile.
Michael ignored the pass and said, "Sure. Liz will be over too," Michael said, looking at her.
Maria's smile lifted. "Really? Ummm ... that's great..... Ummm ... why?" Maria stuttered out.
"She needed a friend," Michael stated, simply.
"Well, why you? She has me! And even Alex! Why you?" She asked again. Her voice began rising. She was getting angry.
"Because, you haven't been there! None of you have!" Michael said, getting angry as well.
"I've ALWAYS have been there! How DARE you suggest otherwise!" Maria said, storming out of the room.
"Easily," Michael mumbled, heading towards the kitchen.

"I thought synthetics were supposed to be all logical and sh!t, but you're just a big ol' psycho girl!" The TV blared, Liz and Michael started to crack with laughter.
"You can say that about a lot of people," Liz said laughing harder.
Michael knew exactly who she was talking about, and that made it even funnier. They had been at his house for about and hour, and had gone through half a gallon of ice cream. They were having a blast.
"This is REALLY good," Liz said. Michael turned to look at her, only to find her with another bowl of ice cream in her hand. Wait! That was HIS bowl!
"LIZ! What are you doing?" Michael asked.
Liz looked at him. "I'm eating ice cream..." She answered, confused. She looked completely oblivious to what she had just done.
"Ummm, Liz. That was my bowl, and it had a lot of Tabasco in it," Michael said worried.
"You're kidding me..." Liz said, with a look of horror. "Then why does it taste so good?" She asked, licking her lips.
Michael watched her and shrugged his shoulders. "I don't know, but you missed a spot," he said, reaching over to wipe some Tabasco from her lips. He looked into her eyes, and smiled. They started leaning in for a kiss, when the door opened.
"Michael, I was wrong, and I'm sorry," Maria said, walking in and sitting next to him on the couch, oblivious to what she had just interrupted. Michael shifted awkwardly.
"No problem," he said.
"Hey Liz," She said, looking at her friend.
"Hi," Liz responded with a forced smile.
"So what are we watching?" Maria asked, leaning into Michael's side.

Ch. 3

"Liz, we need to talk about what happened the other night," Michael said, climbing through her window. It had been two days since their movie night, and they hadn't talked about their almost kiss yet.

"Michael?" Liz asked, looking up from her journal, at her desk. For some reason, she wasn't surprised about him climbing through her window. In fact, she was expecting it. "What are you doing here?" She asked, playing dumb.

"Liz, we need to talk about what happened," he said again, sitting on her bed.

"Michael, nothing happened. Nothing was going to happen," Liz insisted.

"Yeah? Then why have you been ignoring me for the past couple of days? At first, we were talking everyday, and then, we don't talk at all. I was starting to feel lost....." he said, trailing off.

Liz looked at him. He was right. She had begun to feel lost as well. She hadn't meant to close him off, but she was also afraid to be around him. For some reason, she felt drawn to him every since that night. After the movie, she insisted that Michael let her walk home. She said goodnight to him and Maria, and she hadn't talked to him since. "Michael, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to ignore you, it's just that that night, things were starting to feel a little...."

"Awkward?" he finished.

"Yeah," Liz said, sitting next to him on her bed. "Michael you've been a great friend, the best friend, and I'm thankful for that, but it can never be anything more," Liz said, forcefully. "You are.....with.....Maria," finished.

"Yeah. I really do love her," Michael admitted. "But does that mean that we can't hang out?"

"Never! I don't think that I could take it, if I lost you too," Liz quietly said. Michael seemed to realize that he was getting a little out of character, so he cleared his throat.

"So, we good?"

"Always," Liz said, smiling.

"Okay, well, I got to go. I have a "real" date with Maria. Ummm.... can I come by afterward, and tell you how it went?" he asked.

"Sure," Liz said happily. Michael smiled and heading towards the window. He had one leg through, when Liz stopped him.

"Ummm, Mikey?" Michael turned around, and looked at her.

"Stay away from shampoo," she said laughing.

"I will never live that down," he mumbled before climbing completely through the window.

A couple of hours later, Liz looked up from her book at the sound of muffled sobs. She went to her window and couldn't believe her eyes. There on her balcony sat a crying Michael. She quickly climbed out of her window and rushed to his side. "What's wrong, Mikey?" she asked in a small voice. She had never seen him like this before, and it was starting to scare her. When he didn't answer her, she began to panic. "Michael?" She asked, reaching up and lifting his chin. Her heart broke at the sight. His eyes were swollen and filled with tears. He looked broken, for lack of a better word. He rested his head in her chest and sobbed. "Michael, please tell me what happened," Liz pleaded desperately.

"She slept with Kyle," Michael whispered, shaking. Liz was confused.

"Who did? Who slept with Kyle?" Liz asked, rubbing his back. She was hit with image after image.

*~!~* "Michael, there's ummm... there's ummm something that I need to tell you," Maria stuttered, nervously.

Michael looked up from the plate of food sitting in front of him. They were at Senor Chows, and so far, the night seemed to be going really well. He had even brought her flowers. He was having a great time, but at the sound of her unsure voice, his whole mood shifted. "What is it, Maria?" He asked, worried.

"I uhhhh.... I screwed up," Maria said, her eyes filled with unshed tears.

"Maria, what is it?" He asked, grabbing her hand. At the gesture, her tears started to flow freely.

"I uhh... I slept with Kyle," she said in a barely audible tone. It was so low, that Michael wasn't even sure that he had heard her correctly, but when he looked in her eyes and saw the regret that lay there, he roughly dropped her hand. She cried harder.

"YOU WHAT!?!" He asked angrily.

"It was after our fight, and I wasn't thinkin' clearly. Kyle was there and...." she sniffled. Realization hit Michael.

"Then you came to my house like nothing ever happened. You even apologized!" He said, his eyes now filled with tears also. "I loved you! How could you!?" He asked, his voice high. He was completely oblivious to the attention that the scene was causing.

"I came over to tell you!" Maria said desperately.

"But you didn't!" Michael offered, heatedly.

"I was afraid of what would happen if I told you," Maria cried out.

Michael realized what happened. "That's why you asked me hear, isn't it! You wanted to be in a public place when you dropped the news! You wanted to have witnesses!" Michael yelled accusingly at the guilty looking Maria. He took one last look at her before getting up and leaving the restaurant. *~!~*

Sometime during the flash, Liz had begun crying. She had felt every ounce of betrayal and pain that Michael had felt, and it was literally breaking her heart. She continued stroking his back, never speaking. They sat that way for the remainder of the night, crying, until the sun came up.

Ch. 4

"Come on Kyle! How could you? You knew that she was with Michael, and you did it anyway," Liz yelled. After Michael left her house the previous day, or rather that morning, Liz had headed straight to Kyle's house, and was shocked to find Maria there as well. She was furious at Kyle for hurting one of the aliens, after he just helped her save their lives, although, he didn't know that. She was even angrier at Maria for cheating on Michael and after everything that she knew about FMax. Liz hadn't even spoken to her yet.

"Liz, what are you mad at him for? He did nothing wrong! I was the one, ok? Me!" Maria yelled at her friend.

"Maria, I can't even look at you right now, so don't even try to talk to me," she said without looking at her friend. Maria was hurt at the statement. Liz turned, and looked at her in the eyes. "You know what? You did a really shitty thing. Do you have any idea how heartbroken that man is? How could you?" Liz said coldly.

"Well, maybe I'm tired of thinking about the 'Royal Four', all of the time. We're so caught up in making them happy, we never make ourselves happy too," Maria retorted. "Yes, I'm sorry for hurting Michael, but I did what I had to do."

"What you had to do!?!? So you HAD to sleep with Kyle?" Liz asked furiously.

"Liz, stop it! Michael and I haven't been together for a long time, and you know that. He's always shutting me out, and I got fed up with it! Kyle's been there for a long time, but I always said that I would make things work with Michael. Our fight, that day, was the last straw!" Maria defended herself.

"Then why did you try to make up with him again?" Liz asked, confused.

"I didn't try to make up with him. I tried to tell him the truth," Maria admitted. "I know why I did what I did, and I never wanted to hurt him, even though he always managed to hurt me."

"So you wanted this? You wanted to get back at him? So you just used K..." Liz didn't get to finish her sentence because she was interrupted by an angry Kyle.

"Don't even think about saying that she used me! I love her, okay? I've seen the way that he treats her, and I'm tired of it! I love Maria more than anything, and when she came to me crying.... I just..."

"Took advantage of the situation," Liz finished, disgusted. "Kyle, how could you do this? And after you helped me save them from pain?" Kyle looked up at her.

"What do you mean?" Kyle asked, confused. Liz's face softened, realizing her error.

"Liz, don't!" Maria shouted at her. "Don't even try to turn this around on him," Maria pleaded.

Liz ignored her. "You wanna know why we pretended to sleep together Kyle? It was to make Max fall out of love with me. If Max and I were together, Isabel and Michael would have died," Liz explained. Kyle looked shocked.

"But... I... I thought that you were just trying to get back at Evans..." Kyle stammered.

"No! I was trying to save lives! I was trying to save Michael, but with the heartache that you just caused him, he'd be better off dead," Liz said bitterly to Maria and Kyle.

"Liz," Maria started.

"Don't even bother!" Liz shouted, grabbing her purse and jacket. "I hope it was worth it, you guys. 'Cause you just lost a couple of friends," with that, Liz left the Valenti home, and slammed the door behind her.

The next couple of months were ... different. Max and Tess were still together, and they stayed away from the Crashdown. They severed all connection to the humans, or so Michael and Liz thought. Michael kept Liz updated on all alien related business. He seemed to be doing better. He switched his shift so that he didn't have to run into Maria, and so did Liz. In fact, Liz seemed to be more angry at Maria than Michael was. Alex had told them that Maria and Kyle were now dating, and that it was getting pretty serious. Surprisingly, that hadn't hurt that much for Michael to hear. Alex was with Isabel in every possible way. You wouldn't see one, without seeing the other. Isabel actually looked happy for once. Then there was Michael and Liz. They were still very close, in fact, it was a little scary. They always knew what the other was thinking and feeling at any given time. It was this strange sort of connection that they'd developed over the months, and Alex and Isabel were starting to think that there was more going on in that relationship that they cared to admit. It was obvious that Michael liked Liz, and that the feelings were mutual, but it never got further than that. They were in a strange case of denial.

Now, the non-couple was at Liz's place, watching Double Jeopardy. They were in Liz's room laying on her bed which was covered with every type of junk food known to man. It also contained a healthy amount of Tabasco Sauce. Liz picked up another Tabasco covered chip. She had taken a liking to it lately, and ate it on everything.

"Ok, that guy deserves whatever he gets," she said with a full mouth.

"Yeah, I mean. How could he just frame his wife like that? That's just wrong!" Michael said reaching for a chip.

"I know!" Liz agreed. She reached for another chip, and frowned. "Michael!"

"What?" he asked innocently.

"You pig! You ate all of the chips!" Liz accused him, laughing.

"I did not!" Michael lied through a full mouth.

"Yeah, I really believe that!" She said getting up.

"Where are you going?" Michael asked after her.

"Downstairs to get more chips!" She called out over her shoulder.

"Hold on. I'll come with you," Michael said pushing pause on the remote, before getting up off of the bed to follow her. They made their way downstairs laughing on the way. It was 5:30 so the Crash was still open. Liz went into the main dinning area to get the chips from behind the counter and she froze from what she saw. There in a booth sat Max, Tess, Kyle and Maria laughing at something. Michael, not seeing this, asked her what was wrong.

"I thought that they didn't talk to any humans, Mikey!" Liz said angrily.

"What are you talking about?" Michael asked confused. He followed her gaze to the booth where the others were sitting.

"I don't believe this," Michael mumbled. He looked back at Liz to see that she wasn't there. He looked back towards the booth, and saw Liz walking angrily towards it. "Oh damn!" Michael cursed walking towards her.

"Liz don't," he called after her. This got the attention of all the others and they were looking nervously at the furious looking Liz.

"Ummm... hello Liz," Max greeted her uneasily.

"Max." Liz replied shortly. The others just looked at them unsure as to what to do.

"Hey Michael," Maria said looking at him.

"Whatever," Michael said back.

"So Liz, is there something that you wanted?" Tess asked rudely.

"As a matter of fact, yes there is," Liz started angrily. "I want to know why in the hell you guys are sitting in MY restaurant talking to them," she said pointing at Kyle and Maria.

"Because they're our friends," Max answered in a strong voice.

"I thought that you cut off all communication to humans!" Liz accused.

"No, you got that one wrong Liz. They cut off all communication with you Liz. You've changed," Maria answered her. Michael was watching the whole scene, and he felt Liz's anger began to rise.

"Calm down, Liz" Michael whispered to her.

"I will NOT calm down, Mikey! Look at this!" Liz continued in a rage. The others sat back and watched in wonder.

"Mikey?" Tess asked laughing. This sent Liz over the edge. Michael felt Liz's hatred for the girl come off of her in waves. It felt like he was about to explode, and he knew that it was what Liz was feeling. He looked back at Liz and he almost doubled over in shock. The rest of the group stared at Liz with a gaping jaw.

"WHAT THE HELL IS EVERYONE LOOKING AT!?!?" Liz asked fed up with the stares. Michael pointed to her hands.

"Liz, why are your hands glowing?" he whispered in her ear. Liz looked down and sure enough, her hands were emitting a bright light.

"I... I don't know. What's happening to me?" She asked him with tears in her eyes.
